Everyone knows that I hate change. It throws me off balance and I just don’t like it. That sai

Everyone knows that I hate change. It throws me off balance and I just don’t like it. That said, last week something changed and it upset me. In fact, I cried. Three times. And to make you even more worried, it was over a guy. Yep, a guy made me cry three times last week. And before you offer to track him down, it was not the same one from my post last week. (Which, by the way, was posted on April Fool’s Day – really people, did you think I would announce my leaving the country in my blog? Seriously? If I was leaving the country for some guy, you’d better believe that the first time you’ve heard about him wouldn’t be in a blog! I shout from the roof tops if I get asked for my number! Seriously people!)

Anywho, back to my crying jag. Yep, three times in three days, which I think is a record for me. And, like I said all because of some guy. Not just some guy, it was all Ric Flair’s fault. I have no problem naming him, because most of you who read this blog, have no idea who he is, nor do you greatly care (apart from him making me cry). I’ll also admit that I was not the only one who cried over this man.

Everyone who has ever met me knows my addiction to professional wrestling. Yes, I know that it’s scripted (not fake, thank you very much), but that doesn’t change the fact that I likelove it. Ric Flair was (and will remain) the best wrestler I have ever had the privilege to watch. There are no words to describe the thrill of being in a crowd, all cheering for the one man. Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that he always gave his best.

Most people can’t understand what draws us fans to a man like Ric Flair. It’s true that we sometimes flinch during his matches. After all, he’s almost 60, but what makes him a legend is his drive and passion for the industry that we all love. Even breaking his break in three places couldn’t stop him. It certainly slowed him down, but only for a while. He came back better than ever. (And no, this wasn’t one of those “fake” injuries that the current crop suffer from so they can go make a movie. It was a real life plane crash that killed one man and paralyzed another.) Did I mention that the crash was in 1975? Yep, three years into his 36 year career, the doctors told him he would never wrestle again. Kinda makes you think, doesn’t it?

Now I won’t bore you with the facts and figures of Ric Flair’ career, I won’t go into the 7 separate times he won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, or the 16 times he won the World Championship belt. Oh no, I won’t say a word about them.

What I will bore you with is his last match. Months before Wrestlemania 24, the seed had been sown. Every fan out there knew the time was running out on his career. So when the stipulation was made that the next match he lost would be his last, we knew the end was near.

I do have to congratulate WWE for actually giving Ric Flair the send off that he so richly deserved. So many other wrestlers get shown the door in ways that don’t befit the career they’ve had. Ric Flair had blessed this industry for over 30 years. They gave him the perfect send off. A match against one of the best – Mr Wrestlemania himself, Shawn Michaels. And he did him proud.

For years to come, the end sequence of the match will be part of history. A battered Shawn Michaels facing a battered Ric Flair, the immortal words “I’m sorry, I love you” and Sweet Chin Music for the pin. I’m not afraid to say that I cried like a baby.

And again during the replay later that day. And especially during his final appearance the next day on Raw. Yes, I know that the send off was planned to the last detail, yes I know, but that doesn’t mean that the emotions aren’t real.

The best comparison I can make is following a much beloved character from your favourite TV show, and then watching as they film their final scene, knowing that you would never see them as the same person again. Remember Molly from A Country Practice? Remember when she died, how emotional it was? Double it and then send all that emotion to every country in the world and you won’t even come close to the emotion that filled the arena at Rc Flair’s farewell.

That’s what it feels like. I’m not ashamed to say it, I’m going to miss watching Ric Flair, 16 time World Chamption and Class of 2008 WWE Hall Of Famer. Wrestling will never be the same again and neither will many fans.

We’ve said farewell to a legend of the game. And now there’s only one thing left to say…in the immortal words of Ric Flair…WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I’m not a big wrestling fan, I used to follow like it was a religion when I was a kid but it just doesn’t appeal to me anymore. But you don’t have to be a wrestling fan to know what people refer “WHOOOOOOOOO” to, the legendary Nature Boy Ric Flair. He has been one of the most charismatic and most respected wrestler in the history and is arguably the best. I went to Youtube and seen what the WWE did for him on Wrestlemania weekend and RAW, it was very emotional and classy. Take a look at the video’s you might shed a tear.

But really long all most 4 hours. All the matches were good. My favourite was the Money in the Bank. Those guys did some crazy new stuff with the ladders. The fans were most into the Rick Flair vs Shawn Michaels, and the The Undertaker vs Edge matches. On a side note a bunch of fans got hurt during The Undertaker’s entrance. Some of the fireworks went wrong. More info on that here.

If you don’t follow wrestling, you may not have heard or even understood. Even my wife looks

If you don’t follow wrestling, you may not have heard or even understood. Even my wife looks at me funny…

Ric Flair wrestled his last match on Sunday (March 30th, 2008).

Now, you may not know who Ric Flair is. Many do. Many who only watched wrestling when they were 11 or 12 years old, and haven’t watched it since, at least know the name. But not get the significance. I mean it’s not Hulk Hogan, or The Rock, or Triple H, or Stone Cold Steve Austin.

If you only know the WWF, or only know the BIG big names, then maybe you don’t get it.

And at one point in time, I really didn’t get it. I had been watching professional wrestling for maybe 2 years. Pretty much just sat down and watched WWF Wrestling Challenge and WWF Superstars of Wrestling on Saturday mornings cause I didn’t have anything else better to do.

Now, I was not so myopic that I thought that the WWF was the only game in town. I had picked up an Apter magazine or two, and had seen some of the names: Lex Luger, The Road Warriors, Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes. But I didn’t remember seeing that the NWA was on television.

First encounter. I went down to visit family for a week down in the Baltimore area in the spring of 1989. And during one afternoon or evening, I was watching my little portable television, and caught some wrestling show that was hyping a recent World Championship match between Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat. I knew of Ricky Steamboat from his WWF days, and was somewhat surprised that he was challenging for (what I figured) was the NWA World Title.

Second encounter. My freshman roommate in college was a huge wrestling fan, having watched it for years. He tried to school me on the NWA. So, by now WCW Worldwide was on a local affiliate, and I started watching. By now, this was the fall of 1989, and Ric Flair and Terry Funk were tearing things up. Everyone knows that 1989 in NWA/WCW was one of the greatest years of all time, but you couldn’t really tell that from the syndicated hour of television on Saturday mornings.

I never had time or the money for pay-per-view. So I just enjoyed wrestling as something to watch on Saturday mornings. However, I was now driving on my own, and local free video stores were starting to pop-up everywhere. And the one down that opened up down the street from me had a wealth of WWF and NWA videos.

This is where I got to know the “Nature Boy”, on the whirling reels of VHS tapes rented from the local video store. I forget which one was purchased first, but it really doesn’t matter. Whether it was the Great American Bash 1987, featuring the War Games between Flair and the Horsemen versus Dusty, Nikita and the Road Warriors; whether it was Chi-Town Rumble (1989) featuring the classic Ric Flair vs Ricky Steamboat match; or if it was Wrestle War 1990 where Flair and Luger went down to the end and the Horsemen had to make the save.

I devoured everything. And suddenly I ‘got’ Ric Flair. And from there, I followed “The Man’s” career.

What many people don’t understand is that Ric Flair is the cross-over for professional wrestling. He is the last tie between the old style of Harley Race, Dusty Rhodes, Dick Murdoch, and even Lou Thesz and Buddy Rogers.

He is the last man standing. Ric Flair is the only one of his generation who is able to still frequently compete in an active wrestling ring. And he is still relevant enough to have it matter.

And the Nature Boy made me cry. Not openly weep mind you. A tear rolling down one’s face. This has happened with me and professional wrestling on four occasions that didn’t have to do with the death of a wrestler:

1. When Mankind (aka Mick Foley) won his first world title from The Rock in 1998, with Michael Cole speaking Jim Ross’s words, about what Mick Foley went through, about how he didn’t have the look of a champion, all of the struggles that he went through. And now, and forever, Mick Foley is a champion.

2. When Chris Benoit (yeah, THAT Chris Benoit) and Eddie Guerrero both stood in the middle of Madison Square Garden at WrestleMania XX, both holding onto their world titles, and Eddie looked at Benoit with the look of, “They told us we couldn’t do it, bro, but look where we are now.”

3. When Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko wrestled their last match in the ECW Arena, and the entire locker room came out to put them on their backs as the fans chanted ECW. As both wrestlers claimed their love for ECW.

4. Ric Flair returns to WCW Television in September of 1998. Flair dressed in a tuxedo comes out, introduced by Arn Anderson, and gives the greatest speech of a lifetime. A speech that most wrestlers never get to make to their fans. After a huge ovation with tears in his eyes, “I just wanted to say, that the twenty-five years I’ve spent every night of my life trying to make you happy was worth every damn minute of it.”

I now live in a world where Ric Flair is retired from professional wrestling. I mean we all saw it coming. It’s no surprise. And even not a great loss. Somewhat like when Cal Ripken Jr. retired. It wasn’t as if he was still an all-star at his peak. It’s certainly time for it to happen.

But still… Ric Flair has wrestled his last match as an active competitor.

That’s the new order of business. The new way of life.

“Diamonds are forever, and so is Ric Flair… Whoooooooo!”

On WWE Monday Night Raw. He lost to WWE Superstar Shawn Michaels in a retirement match at Wrestlemania 24. I’m going to dedicate the good ol’ Ric Flair days with adding an addition to my blog. The original Four Horseman Theme song. Farewell Ric Flair. One of the best ever to grace a wrestling ring period!
