Tragedy struck in Texas last month when a 26-year-old man was killed in a snow-removal accident while working for his family’s landscaping company.

The victim’s father has filed a lawsuit against Buyers Products Company of Ohio, the manufacturer of a salt-spreader the man was using at the time of his death. The suit also names the installer and seller of the machine.

The family’s attorney says the son’s death could have been prevented if the salt spreader had an emergency shutoff device or a guard that would protect clothing from being caught in the machine’s auger. The machine also lacked warnings that clothing could become caught.

If the salt-spreader’s manufacturer is found to have sold a product it knew or reasonably should have known was dangerous, the victim’s family could receive compensation for the victim’s medical and funeral expenses, loss of earnings, and damages for their own mental pain and suffering.

Obviously, no amount of money can offset the tremendous emotional cost of this loss, but at least the law allows for some recovery so that financial hardship isn’t added to the family’s woes. Similarly, for those injured by defective products, compensation may be available to offset medical bills, lost wages, and other economic damages.

If you or someone you love have been injured due to a poorly designed or manufactured product, contact the Ohio wrongful death lawyers at Slater & Zurz LLP for a FREE evaluation of your case by calling 1-800-297-9191 or send a Blog Message to schedule a time to talk.
