So, after a marathon final table, the World Series of Poker 2009 has come to a close. Congratulation

So, after a marathon final table, the World Series of Poker 2009 has come to a close.

Congratulations to Joe Cada, who – at 21 – has become the youngest player to claim the world title.

But it was not easy for Cada to break Peter Eastgate’s record. He had to survive 17-and-a-half hours of play just to reach the final two.

And, despite holding a dominant lead over Darvin Moon after eliminating Antoine Saout in 3rd, the pendulum swung back and forth over the 86 hands of heads-up play before Joe’s pocket nines held against Darvin’s queen-jack of diamonds.

World champion Joe Cada is mobbed by his team of supporters

It marked the end of a remarkable comeback for Cada, who was down to under 2.3 million in chips at one stage during the final table.

But the 21-year-old managed to fight back with a lot of nerve and a bit of luck to take the crown.

A long and winding road

In the lead-up to the final table, all the talk was of Phil Ivey, and whether he could reaffirm his tag as the best player in the world by taking the title.

It was not to be, however, as Moon got lucky when his ace-queen outdrew Ivey’s ace-king to send the Vegas pro packing in seventh place.

Phil Ivey hoped to be celebrating an eighth WSOP bracelet, but at 32 his chance will surely come again

Before Ivey’s exit, two other players had hit the rail after two very different aces-vs-kings encounters.

First out was James Akenhead. After having his chip-stack decimated when his kings ran into Kevin Schaffel’s aces, Cada finished him off to send the Londoner home $1.2million richer.

The next to follow was Schaffel himself. He looked to have put himself back in contention to win the event when he moved all-in with aces again and got a call from Eric Buchman’s kings.

But if the king on the flop wasn’t demoralising enough, Buchman made four of a kind on the turn to end the 52-year-old Floridian’s dream of Main Event success.

And then there were six

Following Ivey out of the door was Steve Begleiter. The former Bear Stearns exec was few people’s favourite to win after making some questionable plays en route to the November Nine, but he seemed to have improved his game after receiving coaching from multiple WPT champion Jonathan Little.

And ‘Begs’ was hugely unlucky in a hand against Saout, where he made a wonderful call on the flop with second pair against the Frenchman’s flush draw only for Saout to leave the New Yorker drawing dead after a third heart hit the turn.

To compound his ill-fortune, he got the last of his chips in with pocket queens against Moon’s ace-queen, but gt outdrawn once again.

Jeff Shulman was unable to emulate his father Barry's success, but he should be pleased with his performance

Next out the door was Jeff Shulman. The 34-year-old pro, who had finished 7th in 2000, didn’t really put a foot wrong throughout the final table. He played a patient game, no doubt influenced by the coaching of former world champion Phil Hellmuth, but it was not his day.

Shulman still managed to get his chips in with the best of it when his pocket sevens led against Saout’s ace-9, but a 9 on the flop ended his main event agonisingly short of the $8.5million first prize.

Crunch time

Eric Buchman must have thought the bracelet was his to lose after his elimination of Schaffel early on, and the New Yorker continued to bide his time and stay out of trouble throughout the early proceedings.

But he opened up his game when the tournament got four-handed, and lost a monster pot with ace-queen against Saout’s ace-king and exited soon after.

Yet again it was a questionable call from Moon which ended a player’s tournament, after the logger’s king-jack outdrew Buchman’s ace-five to send the 30-year-old back to New York with over $2.5million.

With three players left, Saout was most onlookers’ favourite to claim the crown, but two pivotal hands sent the chip-leader crashing out in third place. Who knows what would have happened if the Frenchman’s pocket queens had held against Cada’s pocket twos, or if his eights had held against Cada’s ace-king?

Antoine Saout probably deserved better than third place for his play

The final countdown

But in the end that coinflip ended Saout’s main event. He had turned an original stake of $50 into $3.5million, but still had cause to feel disappointed.

And his exit left Moon and Cada to fight it out for the bracelet. At the start of heads-up play Moon’s stack had barely deviated from the $58.93million with which he started the final table, while the chips of the other eight players had somehow all found their way to Cada.

Despite being less than half the age of his opponent, Cada’s greater experience of heads-up play (as well as his chip advantage) made him a strong favourite to defeat Moon, but it was far from easy.

The chip-lead swung back and forth over nearly three hours of play between the two rivals, but in the end Cada edged across the finish line and stepped into poker history.

Honestly my dead grandmother was a better player than the two shitheads that battled it out for the title. Cada and Moon might be the luckiest sons of bitches on the planet…I’ve never seen two people river out more in my life…these assholes are winning with Ace Queen over Ace King and pocket twos beating pocket nines…unbelievable…it’s like watching retards trying to balance their checkbooks. Joe Cada is now the youngest ever to win the main event but fuck him he had no business being there…these assholes went all in every fucking hand and got bailed out everytime. Fuck it I’m raising the 10 grand and entering this shit next year, I’ll go all in blind every other hand and maybe I’ll win millions…fuck this shit…time to ban fuckers who have no idea what they’re doing.

As I prepare for my 2010 World Series of Poker (WSOP) the latest news is that I will be playing a to

As I prepare for my 2010 World Series of Poker (WSOP) the latest news is that I will be playing a tournament in my home town; Crescent City, CA. In addition to writing articles for my column and publishing stories on my blog I am playing some medium buy-in tournaments to keep my skills at the table sharp.

The Jefferson State Poker Championship will be held at Elk Valley Casino over two days in late December with the final being on New Years Eve. I will post more details of the tournament as I receive them. The tournament is $340 buy-in with $100 add-on that is structured to give you extra chips if you buy the entire $440 up front. The details are still a little hazy to me, but my understanding is there are three separate qualifying rounds with the top 18 or so moving on to the final. If you play the first qualifier and do not make it you can play the second and third qualifiers also.

The casino has been running satellites on Sunday and Monday nights and will continue to do so right u until the tournament. There is a cap to the number of players that can play because this is a small casino. I am scheduled to interview somebody from the casino next week and I will pass along additional details.

For now all I can say for sure is that I will be there in Crescent City the week between Christmas and New Years playing poker. If you are around swing by the casino and say hi.

I have been reading No Limit Hold’em Theory and Practice by David Sklansky and Ed Miller. This is a solid book that is a little tough to read. I am reading it for the fourth time and trying to study and make sure I have the concepts. The particular focus is on bet sizing.

As always I am looking for story ideas for my blog so please leave me a comment of anything you may want to know more about. There will be prizes and giveaways for story ideas that are used in my blog.

LAS VEGAS. As the World Series of Poker has grown from a small-scale event to a nationwide phenomenon with a top prize of $12 million, it has attracted critics in the non-profit sector who say it does much less than other major sports to assist their work.

“Where is the WSOP at Christmas or Thanksgiving?” asked Ted Synnar of the Dream Come True Foundation. “In the past, we never saw them.”

But tournament organizers say they’re determined to change that, and are encouraging the big players in the no-limit Texas Hold ‘Em tournament to give back to those who are less fortunate through a program called “WSOP Kinda Kares for Kids”.

Raymer: “Beat it kid.”

Greg “Fossilman” Raymer, the 2004 champ, appears to have taken the WSOP’s mandate to heart as he sits down for some high-stakes poker with five terminally-ill children referred to him by the Dream Come True Foundation.

“Lot of these kids, they can barely pull the arm on a slot macine,” says Raymer. “Poker’s a job for me, but for them, it’s all they think about once they get bored with Old Maid.”

Across the room Cyndy Violette, who busted out of this year’s tournament early, is playing a hand of Texas Hold ’Em with a group of testicular cancer survivors. “Guys,” she says as she deals two cards face down to each of them from the “button” chair, “I’m living proof that you don’t need balls to be good at poker.”

Meanwhile, Johnny Chan allows little Tiffany Germond, who is confined to a wheelchair, to try on one of his ten diamond-encrusted WSOP championship bracelets. “Mommy, look what the nice man gave me!” she squeals as she wheels off towards the blackjack tables. “Hey–come back here!” Chan yells as Tiffany finds a hole and breaks through the crowd of fans that surrounds a table of nine top-notch players. “Aw, let her go,” says Phil Hellmuth, Jr., but Chan calls for security and Tiffany is escorted off the premises. She will be banned from Harrah’s Casinos world-wide for her impulsive act.

Back at Raymer’s table, the Fossilman is trying to steal a hand by brow-beating his younger opponents. He is sitting on an ace and a jack, and the flop produces two jacks and a five. Raymer raises. “Daddy, that man’s glasses are scaring me,” says Billy Nobles, Jr., and the boy’s father asks Raymer to drop his trademark protection. “No way,” says Raymer, “the eyes are the number one poker ‘tell’,” or physical sign that reveals the strength or weakness of a player’s hand.

“Please, Mr. Raymer–he just wants to win one hand,” Nobles Sr. pleads.

“No can do,” Raymer replies. “I’ve got an endorsement deal with David Steele Sunglasses, Newport Beach, CA 10937 to wear the Greg Raymer Cat Eye Sunglasses throughout the tournament.” Billy Jr. folds, and Raymer rakes in a pot of 3,500 chips.

As the charity event breaks up, a little boy on a respirator approaches Johnny Chan with a special request. “Mr. Chan,” he begins weakly.

“Yes?”

“Could you–could you hit a home run for me.”

Chan considers the request for a moment. “You mean go all in before the flop holding a pair of aces?”

“Y-yes,” the little boy says with difficulty.

“And have somebody beat me with a 7-9 off suit when they hit their straight on the river?” Chan asks incredulously. “I don’t think so kid.”

OMG!! I Finally finished watching the final table of the 2009 WSOP. First the DVR didn’t record it properly then it was other stuff then it was more stuff and then… So now that we are into the circuit events again I had better get caught up here. So thanks for being patient. Oh yeah I did get a blogging offer from Cake but it wasn’t what I was looking for so Im still here as The Guy in Seat 4!! In any event here is the Pokerdog283 recap of the final table action!!

Great introductions for all players but I will get right to the action as I did a play by play before the tournament aired!!

Akenhead vs Shaffel (That other guy) Schaffell had the best of it with the AK to Akenheads KQ. Akenhead in need of a Q he magically hits the Q and suddenly starts acting like a British Gangster, I was kind of embarrassed??

Saouts J2 then J2 flop catch for 2 pair made me throw up it was so sick to watch on TV!!

Neat little featurette on Moon with his Cabin Get away maybe from now on the November 9 will forget the poker lessons and go hunt bears or something!!

Nice hand between Cada and Shulman where Cada’s AJ loses to Shulman’s AK taking Cada to below 3 million!!
Note watching Shulmans training clips Diego Cordovez is a Card Player Superstar!!

Beglighter vs Saout. Great read untill Saout turns a flush then I just felt Bad!!

Ivey and Moon Big Hand Ivey Chants were deafening!!! Moon hits( like it was a surprise) And the Hero is out!! I did see that despite earlier reports Moon and Ivey shake hands.

Absolute suckout ,kick to the groin was the Cada/Shulman 33 vs JJ with Cada all in hits a 3 on the flop to the cheers of Team Suckout!!
By the way when did Joe Cada go with Full Tilt?? Was his UB hat not enough?? Or was Moon the only person that didn’t sell out?? Shulman didn’t sell out he is already big time!!

Cada versus Saout AK/88 of Saouts a sick miracle King for Cada and Saout is at Macaren airport looking for his airfrance ticket!

Moon and Cada HU!!

Vince Neil doing the intro??? WTF was Ralph Mouth from Happy Days busy??
Some big hands ending with Cadas 99 dominating Moons QJ diamonds and a shiny new bracelet for Cada and both win alot of Cash!!

Of Course this is only one Dogs opinion!

http://www.blifaloo.com/info/lies.php

In the past few days, I’ve heard many people talking about deception and liars. So, when I stumbled upon this site today, I thought I’d post it. It’s an article that tells you how to spot a liar from a site called Blifallo.com (“Boredom relief- stimulate your brain with games, puzzles…”).

Not only is this info useful in real life personal and business situations, it’s helpful in poker. I know a famous professional poker player who uses some of the same techniques below to decide if his opponents are bluffing or not.

And from wikihow: Some more pointers on how to spot liars:

Learn to recognize deflections. Usually when people are lying, they will tell stories that are true but are deliberately aimed at not answering the question you asked. If a person responds to the question “Did you ever hit your wife?” with an answer such as “I love my wife, why would I do that?”, the suspect is technically telling a truth, but they are avoiding answering your original question, which usually means they’re lying.

Notice the behavior of other body parts. Ok, so we have illustrators, and manipulators. Illustrators are a sign of telling the truth, this is when you are using your hand gestures to talk. moving your hands while you are talking is a sign of telling the truth. We also have are manipulators. These, are the opposite of illustrators. An example of a manipulator can be playing with your wrist-watch, your jewelery, pulling on your ear lobe, etc. The last, commonly unknown sign of hiding something is a reptile tissue, most people have a reptile tissue in ther nose, and it itches when you’re hiding something. But, before you assume that the person is hiding something, please establish a base line

Base Line A base line is what someone acts like when they are not lying. You have to get a base line before you proceed with anything. Imagine you have a itch on your nose ever since you got out of bed. And someone thinks you are hiding something because you itch your nose when answering a question. oops. What the person should have done is establish a baseline. To establish a baseline, you need to see the person when they aren’t lying. Try asking what their name is, and what they do for a living.

Look out for microexpressions. Microexpressions are split second facial expressions that flash on a person’s face for a less than a 25th of a second and reveal the person’s true emotion underneath their facade. Some people may be naturally sensitive to them, but almost anybody can easily train to be able to detect microexpressions. Put focus to the upper and lower eyelids, the corner of the eyes, the mouth and the muscles surrounding the mouth, the eyebrows and forehead. To practice microexpressions, try This site, or to test all of your skills, see The lie to me testing site.

Shaking hands… When you meet the person who you think is deceiving you, shake their hand. Take note of the temperature. When you are sure they are lying to you, pretend to be leaving and quikly grab their hand for a “Good-Bye” Handshake. If the temperature is colder, they are fearful.

Mind exaggerated details. See if they are telling you too much, like “My mom is living in France, isn’t it nice there? Don’t you like the Eiffel tower? It’s so clean there.” Too many details may tip you off to their desperation to get you to believe them.

Notice the person’s eye movements. Contrary to popular belief, a liar does not always avoid eye contact. Humans naturally break eye contact and look at non-moving objects to help them focus and remember. Liars may deliberately make eye contact to seem more sincere. You can usually tell if a person is remembering something or making something up based on their eye’s movements. When someone is remembering details, their eyes move to the right (your right). When someone is making something up, their eyes move to the left. It’s usually reversed for lefties. (again not always true. To determine a left handed person from a right-handed person, when establishing his/her baseline, you can have them write their name. Or – even easier, just ask them.)

Be aware of their emotional responses

Timing and duration tends to be off when someone is lying. If you ask someone a question and they respond directly after the question, there is a chance that the person is lying. This can be because they have rehearsed the answer, or they’re already thinking about the answer just to get it over with and move forward. A delayed answer can be a sign of lying. To tell the truth takes 2 parts of your brain at most, however to lie takes 6 parts of your brain. If the person has a long story such as “A came home, and opened the refrigerator to load in the groceries. The phone rang, and I answered it. It was my sister. after I hung up, I went to the cookie jar to open it, and the cookies were gone! Then you can ask them to tell it backwards. Liars have trouble telling stories backwards, because in their mine they have rehearsed to fowards, but not backwards. And, as with smiling, facial expressions of a poor liar will be limited to the mouth area.

Pay close attention to the person’s reaction to your questions. A liar will often feel uncomfortable and turn their head or body away, or even subconsciously put an object between the two of you. Also, while an innocent person would go on the offensive (usually responding with anger, which will usually be revealed in a microexpression directly after you say you don’t believe them), a guilty person will often go immediately on the defensive (usually by saying something to reassure their facts, such as deflections).

I’ve been wrestling with the decision to start a bankroll at Full Tilt Poker over the past few days . Actually, I’ve been thinking about it for several weeks now while watching the WSOP, and I’m just about at the point where I’ve convinced myself to pull the trigger. During the past year or so I’ve played at PokerStars but only for play money and I’m just not learning anything about the game. The fact that people are not using real money affects the betting so dramatically that you don’t really get a sense for how the game is “really” played. I am going to put $100 into my initial bank roll and see what I can accomplish with it. To be honest, I don’t think that money will be here two months from the date that I actually deposit it. I’m O.K. with that, because in reality I would find another way to blow that $100 and it is disposable income… it’s not like my kids won’t eat or anything. In any case, I am going to track my progress on this blog… and you are welcome to come along for the ride.

A 21-year old man from Michigan, who often plays online poker, just raked in some huge amount of dollars winning the World Series of Poker.

Joe Cada’s pair of nines gave him the win over 46-year old Darvin Moon. Cada just broke the record of being the youngest WSOP champion and took the crown of Peter Eastgate who is 340 days older than him.

Cada, who chose to play poker than study in college, raked in $8.55 million in a close race. His pair of nines were joined with the board of two sevens, a king, and eight, and a deuce that didn’t connect to either Cada and Moon’s cards. This gave Cada the win.

Cada is looking forward to win back-to-back in WSOP, a dream that would probably quite easy to attain. With his youth and being at the peak of his career, Cada had started strong and would be honed earlier and would become a professional live poker player.

Moon won $5.18 million for second place. Unlike Cada who plays more or less a dozen of tournaments at a time in online poker, Moon has never played online poker.

World Series of Poker (WSOP) Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack has resigned from his post at the WSOP and Harrah’s. Friday, November 13th, was Pollack’s last day on the job.

“It’s bittersweet, but I’m leaving with just great memories and a really nice sense of it being a great run. More than anything else, I’m just appreciative of the opportunity to have been part of the WSOP,” said Pollack, who was instrumental in growing the WSOP since assuming his position in 2005.

The WSOP entered its 40th year this year, with Michigan pro Joe Cada crowned its latest and youngest champion last week.

World Series of Poker spokesman Seth Palansky said there were no immediate intentions to replace Pollack.

Back in May, Pollack teamed with former Party Gaming CEO Mitch Garber to lead Harrah’s Interactive Entertainment, the casino giant’s newly-formed online arm. Pollack was slated to be its President and Harrah’s CEO Gary Loveman commented in a press release announcing the launch: “As the world’s largest gaming company, Harrah’s is taking a proactive approach toward international and interactive expansion. It is important we position ourselves to explore new markets as well as new technologies with our best in class brands.”

Pollack said his next career move remains up in the air: “I really wanted to see this year through, see this series through. I’m leaving on an absolute high note.”

The $10,000 (US) no-limit Texas hold ‘em Main Event began on July 6 and was completed on the morning of July 18. All events were held at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada by Harrah’s Entertainment, which has run the annual event since its purchase from the Binion family in 2004.

For the first time players began each event with double the amount of chips as the buy-in. This means that players in the Main Event started with 20,000 chips. The blind structure has also been increased and some blind levels removed but slowed to allow for more play.

The 2008 World Series of Poker was the 39th annual World Series of Poker (WSOP). Held in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino, the series began on May 30, 2008, and featured 55 poker championships in several variants. All events but the $10,000 World Championship No Limit Texas hold ‘em Main Event, the most prestigious of the WSOP events, ended by July 15. As has been the WSOP custom since 1976, each of the event winners received a championship bracelet in addition to that event’s prize money, which (after the casino’s rake) ranged from $87,929 to $9,119,517.

Many entrants, including the overall winner, won their seat in online poker tournaments.

The 2004 World Series of Poker (WSOP) was held at Binion’s Horseshoe after Harrah’s Entertainment purchased the casino and the rights to the tournament in January. Harrah’s announced that future WSOP tournaments will be held in a moving circuit of member casinos.
There were 2,576 entrants to the main event – more than three times the number of the previous year. Each paid $10,000 to enter what was the largest poker tournament ever played in a brick and mortar casino at the time. Many entrants, including the overall winner, won their seat in online poker tournaments.

World Series of Poker 2004

The 2005 World Series of Poker opened play on June 2, continuing through the Main Event No Limit World Championship starting on July 7. The conclusion of the Main Event on July 15 marked the close of play, and the largest prize in sports and/or television history at the time ($7,500,000) was awarded to the winner. ESPN’s broadcast began July 19 with coverage of WSOP Circuit Tournaments, and coverage of the Main Event began October 11 and ended November 15.

All events were held at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino with the exception of the final two days of the Main Event which were held at Binion’s Horseshoe Casino. This marked the last time the final table was held at Binion’s Horseshoe.

There were 5,619 entrants to the main event. Each paid $10,000 to enter what was the largest poker tournament ever played in a brick and mortar casino at the time. Many entrants won their seat in online poker tournaments.

The 2006 World Series of Poker (WSOP) began on June 25, 2006 with “satellite” events, with regular play commencing on June 26 with the annual Casino Employee event, and the Tournament of Champions held on June 28 and 29. Forty more events in various events including Omaha, seven-card stud and razz, plus ladies’ and senior tournaments led up to the 10,000 USD no-limit Texas hold ‘em main event starting July 28 and running through the final table on August 10.

All events were held at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, which marked the first time that a casino other than Binion’s Horseshoe (now “Binion’s”) hosted the final table of the main event. Six days reserved for the first two rounds of play for the main event were established by Harrah’s Entertainment, which has run the annual event since its purchase from the Binion family in 2004.

The first prize in the main event was $12 million (US), the richest prize for the winner of any sports or television event in history. The top 12 players became millionaires.

The 2006 World Series featured a much-anticipated HORSE tournament with a $50,000 buy-in, the highest ever for a single WSOP event.

Humberto Brenes, Phil Hellmuth, Chris Ferguson, and Alex Jacob are tied for the most number of cashes during one WSOP, with eight cashes each. Jeff Madsen, who won two events and made two other final tables (finishing third both times), was named the 2006 WSOP Player of the Year (POTY). He barely edged Hellmuth, who also made four final tables.

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is a poker tournament held annually in Las Vegas. The first WSOP in 1970 was an invitational wherein Benny Binion invited six of the best known poker players to The Horseshoe Casino. At first, the WSOP grew slowly. It was twelve years before the WSOP drew 52 participants, in 1982. In the early 1980s satellite tournaments were introduced allowing people to win their way into the various events for less than the full entry fees. By 1987, there were over 2,100 entrants in the entire series. Participation peaked in 2006, with 8,773 people participating in the Main Event alone.

The first World Series of Poker was not a freeze-out tournament, but rather an event with a set start- and stop-time with the winner determined by secret ballot. In 1973, five-card stud was added as a second event. Since 2007, the WSOP has consisted of 55 events. While events traditionally take place over one or more consecutive days during the series in June and July, in 2008 the Main Event final table was delayed until November. The winner of each event receives a World Series of Poker bracelet and a monetary prize based on the number of entrants and buy-in amounts. A World Series of Poker bracelet is considered the most coveted prize or trophy a poker player can win, with one from the Main Event revered above all others. Since 1976, a bracelet has been awarded to the winner of every event at the annual WSOP. WSOP victories prior to 1976 are also known as “bracelets”. Most of the major poker variants are featured, though in recent years over half of the events have been variants of Texas hold ‘em.

The series culminates with the $10,000 no-limit hold’em “Main Event“, which since 2004 has attracted entrants numbering in the thousands. The victor receives a multi-million dollar prize. The winner of the World Series of Poker Main Event is considered to be the World Champion of Poker. Since its inception, Stu Ungar and Johnny Moss are the only players to have won the Main Event three times, though Moss’s first victory came in a different format than that now used as he was elected winner by vote of his fellow players at the conclusion of what was then a timed event. Moss (if the first time win by vote is counted), Ungar, Doyle Brunson, and Johnny Chan are the only people who have won the Main Event in consecutive years. Johnny Chan’s second victory in 1988 was featured on the 1998 film Rounders. Phil Hellmuth holds multiple WSOP records: most bracelets (11), most WSOP cashes (68), and most WSOP final tables (41). The 2008 Main Event bracelet winner, Peter Eastgate, is the youngest person to win the Main Event. Since 2005, the WSOP has been sponsored by Harrah’s Entertainment.

A 17 éves kora óta pókerező Joe Cada nem csupán 8,5 millió dolláros nyereményével írta be magát a póker játék történelmébe, de 21 évesen ő az eddigi legfiatalabb WSOP főverseny győztes. Ez a póker rekord valószínűleg sokáig megdöntetlen marad, hiszen Las Vegas kaszinóiba a törvények szerint 21 évnél fiatalabb személye nem léphet be.

If you’re a poker fan, then you probably already know Joe Cada won the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event. In addition to the bracelet, Cada earned 8.5 million for his first place finish. Cada beat 6,493 other players to win the main event, including a final table with Phil Ivey. I listened to a good portion of the event live on the internet before watching portions of Tuesday’s broadcast on ESPN. It is very surprising to me that excitement surrounding the WSOP continues to grow. 2009 saw record fields, including an infamous day 1d in the main event that turned away hundreds of players.

I was rooting for Phil Ivey to win the main event. Ivey is widely regarded as the best poker player in the world. An Ivey win would have helped further the argument made by the Poker Players Alliance (and others) that poker is indeed a game of skill. Instead, poker enthusiasts were treated to their worst nightmare: suck out after suck out on a global stage. Phil Ivey was knocked out by Darvin Moon when his Ace-King couldn’t hold against Moon’s Ace-Queen. Kevin Schaffel was knocked out in eighth place with Aces when Eric Buchman’s Kings improved to a set of Kings on the flop and quads on the turn. Steven Begleiter was eliminated holding Queens by Moon’s Ace-Queen when an Ace hit on the river. If you were rooting for anyone other than Moon or Cada you probably felt like someone punched you in the gut at least once during the final table.

Hopefully the non-enthusiasts won’t let a few bad beats taint their views of poker. Support has been building:

H.R. 2267 the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, & Enforcement Act of 2009 now has 62 cosponsors

Congressional Joint Tax Committee recently reported that licensing and regulation of Internet gaming would produce up to $41 billion in revenue over 10 years

S.1597 the Internet Poker and Games of Skill Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act was introduced by Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) in August of this year

The dark cloud on the horizon is the December 1st deadline for regulatory compliance of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). Online players have already begun reporting letters from their banks warning of the coming deadline. Too soon to tell how this will change the poker landscape, if at all.

It would be a hard task to try to market some of the guys at the final table of the WSOP. The chip leader to begin the final table, Darvin Moon, was a logger from Maryland and doesn’t quite hit the heartthrob level with the ladies. The winner of this year’s main event Joe Cada, looks like he is permanently smelling dog crap or an extremely nasty whiff of gas. Watching nine men sit around a table is only good for so long, so my suggestion to the committee for next year’s main event, rig it so Vanessa Rousso is in it. Rousso is a top poker pro, a Go-Daddy girl, and has done some photos for Sports Illustrated’s always popular swimsuit edition. If Vanessa Rousso was at your final table next year, your ratings would go through the roof. If not, I will still watch to see nine people try to compete it out for the biggest prize in the world. But nine dudes, doesn’t quite do it for me.

The World Series of Poker is surprisingly still very big around the country, and could be bigger with Rousso as a spokesman. A few years ago, there was a giant boom, and people everywhere were playing poker after Chris Moneymaker made an improbable run to win the WSOP main event bracelet and claim 2.5 million dollars. Since then the first place prized as seen amounts as high as over 12 million (won by Jamie Gold). The WSOP lets ordinary people like Moneymaker and this year’s winner, Joe Cada (8.5 mil) a chance to not only win the biggest event in poker, but to change their lives completely. Pros, amateurs, men, and women are all on the same level, what other sport can offer you that? A pro hasn’t won the main event since Carlos Mortensen in 2001.

Tuesday night, the final two hour episode of this year’s WSOP’s main event was aired. And when I found the ratings I was surprised to see over nine hundred thousand houses tuned into the first hour, and over one million tuned in to the second half. I thought poker was dying. I love playing poker, and I don’t mind watching it televised from time to time, but I know that the final table is a must see event. Thousands of fans would scream after every hand was completed, and every hand they showed on television was actually quite intense. Of course the dealer could just quickly put down the cards, but what fun would that be? They drag the suspense out. Even with the bad commentary throughout the program, the WSOP final table is something I recommend watching if you like poker. But let’s all cross our fingers for Rousso to make the final table next year, that would be a plus, and with her increasing success over the poker world, its not too far off.
