While working on some code this afternoon I realised I had not used the correct namespace or assembly within the webpart I have been working on – so changed them, recompiled, and re-deployed the project (using WSP builder).

The page the webpart had been on then fell over in some style, meaning I couldn’t even see it to remove the offending legacy webpart.

The first tip given to me by a colleague was to view the page contents view – a trick you perform by issuing the following URL…

http://server/site/pages/mypage.aspx?contents=1

This presented an interface, allowing me to remove the legacy webpart from the page. The page was still broken though.

It turned out that re-deploying the new webpart with different namespaces irretrievably broke the existing WebPart page, so I had no option but to re-create it. I was still left with the problem of a new webpart that would not deploy.

We had to do two more things before the system righted itself;

• Remove the existing webpart (whatever it’s name) from the Webpart Gallery in SharePoint
• De-activate, and re-activate the solution package on the site collection

After doing the above, everything worked once more. A lesson  for next time! (hopefully SharePoint 2010 will be here before then, and will have somewhat more stable tooling)

After doing a little work at the house work tonight, I decided to start my vacation.

So, it’s official. I’m engaged to married, about to start a new job, and about round another decade.

When I do things, I like them to be big. And in threes. Not necessarily in that order.

These thoughts about the goings-on of day-to-day life folded into big commitments, new horizons and depth of love do bop around in my head, and none of the three make me nervous or anxious – as some others may profess in the medium of a blog. You know, because these are narcissistic spaces, after all.

Nope, all three are sources of challenge, satisfaction, hard work and happiness. You can’t have one without the other.

Hippies will be happy to know about my latest problem. Too much beer. Not an abundance of beer, but a plethora. And in this time of plenty, in one of my favorite holidays of the season, I feel that I’m simply playing my role in what should be good about a holiday. I’m keeping in season. See, after a little zombie flick this evening I stopped by the Harris Teeter for veggies, eggs and a big beer.

Zombieland is worth seeing in a theater. Especially if you live in Greensboro and are into a fun, mindless zombie flick. Like zombie movies should be. I’ll put it up there with Shaun of the Dead. Thanks, In 10 Words, for the Zombieland photo.

So lunch for Kathleen and I is done tomorrow – I’m going to make some fake pho: Sautee/soften Brussels Sprouts in a saucepan with carrots and garlic and a touch of butter. Pour in water, boil, add flavor packet from ramen Oriental flavor, a squirt or two of Siracha, noodles, top with bean sprouts. Filling for a rainy day and healthy if you don’t drink all the broth (too much sodium). Add a little smoked salmon.

I was quasi-inspired by the NPR story I heard the other day about instant ramen and what goes into it, how it was invented and what others put into ramen. Neato! New perspectives that aren’t from here! Exchanging ideas! Globalization is good!

Maybe I’ll surprise her for lunch, I think, while I’m shopping in Harris Teeter. As for the fakeness of the pho, I have no idea. A friend told me when he did it, now I’m telling you. So there. Pass it on. Teach somebody something today.

So I’m full of zombie love, and freshly finished with listening to a hot Phish set through my iphones while ishopped. I arrive home to put up the on-sale potatoes and some animal cookies and then to sick my Arrogant Bastard Ale in the beer fridge (this shows the household commitment to beer).

And see that my old sticker-covered college fridge nearly full! Brimming! Full of sweet, sweet love from Heaven! This is a good thing.

Now, we’re not drunks over here, but lately the house has begun to accumulate beer. Not that it’s a bad thing. Let’s dig into the list, though. See, half of those are from N.C. – and if you count High Life, which is brewed in Eden, most of those are N.C. beers.

I chose to go with the Duck Rabbit Porter, which compliments the chocolate animal cookies that I bought nicely. The Arrogant Bastard kind of set me off, and I have options, so why not?

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to my vacation. Don’t expect too much of me over the next few days. I have some lounging to handle. And some beer sippin to do. Maybe a hike. Maybe a little book readin. Burn a CD or two. Whatever for the next three days or so.

Il WSP ha il piacere di intervistare uno dei maggiori esponenti della fotografia italiana, Alex Majoli.

Ravennate classe ‘71, attivo fin dall’adolescenza nel mondo della fotografia. a 18 anni era già nella ex- jugoslavia per documentare gli orrori della guerra. Membro della Magnum dal 2001.

1) In una recente intervista hai paragonato il fotografo al samurai, hai trovato tra i due una comunanza negli atteggiamenti e nella preparazione. Come il samurai era al servizio del suo signore cosi il fotografo deve essere al servizio dell’informazione. E’ giusto essere essere sempre al servizio dell’informazione, documentare sempre tutto o in alcuni casi, particolari, è giusto fermarsi?

La storia del samurai e’ un po’ vecchietta . nasce da una cena e da alcuni libri e supposizioni avute piu’ di 10 anni fa’ . non ha nulla a che vedere con l’essere al servizio ma con la disciplina che i samurai applicano e con la devozione ai rituali . cioe’ non credo che si possa insegnare a fare fotografie ma solo la filosofia della fotografia ma nel frattempo si puo’ adottare tecniche di esercizio alla fotografia ; si puo applicare lo stesso atteggiamento che i samurai applicavano all’arte della guerra.

2)A 18 anni eri già fotoreporter professionista, poco dopo eri già in jugoslavia per documentare la guerra, hai affrontato situazione che la quasi totalità dei giovani in quell’età evita o, giusto pochi, sogna solamente di affrontare. Senti che ti manca qualcosa?

Ma guarda la mia e’ stata una scelta obbligata piu’ che cercata fin da quando ero piu’ giovane. sento che manca stabilita’ in molti aspetti della mia vita che si riflettono anche nel mio lavoro di conseguenza. per quanto riguarda la parte dei giovani che evitano…… io dico solo una cosa che i giovani sembrano non avere capito per niente : la liberta’ non sta nell’essere liberi di fare o non fare certe cose ma sta nel non aver aver paura. e potevo anche citare gaber con la partecipazione con il quale sottoscrivo pienamente l’idea ma ha sempre una sfumatura politica la partecipazione mentre la paura e’ quello che ha a che fare con il nostro individualismo.

3)Inizi con un reportage sul manicomio di Leros, lavori molti mesi in Sudamerica per il progetto “Requiem in Samba”, da anni lavori ad “Hotel Marinum”, ci sono dei punti in comune, nei tuoi progetti o cerchi un approccio differente per ogni lavoro?

I 3 progetti che tu hai appena citato hanno forti conessioni tra loro e forse per questo sono e saranno sempre incompiuti icluso leros anche se e’ gia’ diventato libro. ma nella totalita’ del mio lavoro ci sono molti altri aspetti che nascono da idee piu’ che da incontri… citerei libera me e one vote o addirittura c’e tutto uno strato di lavoro che viene da assignments che portato su un tavolo di professori di fotografia non verrebbe considerato ma e’ il pane della mia vita e di quella della mia famiglia. sai si elogia Eugene Smith per essere morto lasciando 18 dollari sul conto perche’ era devoto alla causa della fotografia (mentre faceva set up e sandwich) ma vai a chiedere a sua moglie e ai suoi figli cosa ne pensano di questo. Ogni fotografo ha la responsabilita’ di essere un uomo onesto e coerente prima di essere un eroe.

4)Qualche consiglio per chi vuole intraprendere questa professione.

Non intraprendere questo mestiere …. se proprio uno e’ convinto allora cerchi di farlo con calma e riflessione e lasci il “festival di sanremo” a chi vuole arrivare primo e non raccontare quello che vede.

Cristo è  risorto! Per il popolo romeno la pasqua ortodossa ricopre una delle più importanti manifestazioni religiose dell’ anno. Il culmine dei festeggiamenti della settimana santa cade la notte tra il sabato e la domenica con la Festa della luce, durante la quale in ogni chiesa vengono accese da una torcia benedetta delle candele per i defunti. Questi scatti sono stati realizzati durante la pasqua ortodossa 2009 a Focşani.

Il MACRO Future di Roma ospita tra l’8 novembre e il 31 gennaio 2010 la mostra di pop art surrealista “Apocalypse wow!”. L’evento, organizzato da Zètema Progetto Cultura e curato da Julie Kloger e Giorgio Calcara, è realizzato nell’ambito delle celebrazioni capitoline per il ventennale della caduta del muro di Berlino. La mostra è allestita presso l’area sperimentale del Museo di Arte Contemporanea di Roma, definita MACRO Future che ha sede nella struttura ottocentesca dell’ex-Mattatoio, polo culturale e artistico giovanile situato nel quartiere Testaccio.

Le opere esposte in “Apocalypse wow!” appartengono alle correnti della urban art e della pop art surrealista, a lungo escluse dai canali di distribuzione e di diffusione dell’arte contemporanea nel mondo, perché ritenute minori e senza futuro. “Apocalypse wow!” celebra il ventesimo anniversario della caduta del muro di Berlino e contemporaneamente il superamento del muro della distinzione tra le correnti artistiche superiori e quelle marginali, segnando l’ascesa della globalità nel mondo dell’arte.

Pur delineando alcune manifestazioni fondamentali del consumo contemporaneo come gli spot pubblicitari, i fumetti e le copertine di libri e cd, la pop art surrealista e la urban art non si sono mai affermate come vere e proprie forme artistiche. “Apocalypse wow!” intende dare rilievo alle giovani tendenze del neo pop e della street art esponendo i lavori di artisti del calibro di The Clayton Brothers, Aiko Nakagawa, Lisa Petrucci, Nicola Verlato ed Eric White.

Il MACRO Future è aperto al pubblico dal 2002, quando due padiglioni dell’ex-Mattatoio sono stati assegnati dal Comune di Roma al MACRO per lo sviluppo e la diffusione dell’arte contemporanea. Dal 2003 ospita regolarmente esposizioni ed attività culturali.

Dal 7 al 24 novembre 2009, allo Spaziottagoni, a Trastevere, via Goffredo Mameli, 9 a Roma, si terrà la mostra personale di fotografia di Gabriele Morrione, “Voci. Immagini e parole di donne. 1964-2009”  visitabile dal lunedì al sabato, dalle ore 16.30 alle ore 20, domenica chiuso.

Gabriele Morrione torna a esporre le proprie fotografie in una mostra antologica in cui protagoniste sono ancora una volta le donne. Attraverso i loro volti e i loro sguardi, le donne di Morrione ci guardano e si guardano. Ma non solo. A loro è stato chiesto di raccontarsi, attraverso un testo che ognuna ha scritto, a commento della propria fotografia.

Diventa così una mostra “parlante”, in cui fotografie e testi ci rivelano di questi volti l’anima e il proprio sentire: donne sicure di sé ma insieme fragili, donne che vogliono apparire ma a volte sembrano nascondersi, nella luce, nei propri pensieri.

Al secondo piano del Palazzo delle esposizioni è allestita una sezione della mostra Calder, intitolata Alexander Calder nelle fotografie di Ugo Mulas, curata da Pier Giovanni Castagnoli per l’Archivio Ugo Mulas di Milano, in collaborazione con il quale il progetto è stato realizzato.

E’ esposta una selezione di circa ottanta immagini, tutte stampe ai sali d’argento su carta baritata, realizzate dallo stesso autore (vintage) risalenti agli anni 1963-1968, scattate nelle case-studio abitate dall’artista a Roxbury nel Connecticut o a Saché in Francia, ma anche in altri luoghi che videro la presenza di Calder o delle sue opere

Il grande fotografo italiano prematuramente scomparso (Pozzolegno, Brescia 1928 – Milano 1974), conobbe Calder nel 1962 a Spoleto, quando Giovanni Carandente lo chiamò a documentare la mostra Sculture nella città per la quale l’artista realizzò il grande Teodelapio, che in seguitò donò alla cittadina umbra. Da allora nacque una solida e in tramontata amicizia che diede origine a un formidabile corpus di fotografie, una parte delle quali venne pubblicata nel 1971 in un libro nato dalla collaborazione tra Ugo Mulas, il critico H. Harvard Arnason e lo stesso artista (U. Mulas e H- H. Arnason, Calder, Milano 1971).

Mostra  Fotografica

“AnvediRoma” è un’iniziativa promossa dal Municipio di Roma Centro Storico Politiche Culturali e organizzata dall’ Associazione Culturale “Teatro dell’Airone”.

Il progetto ha come obiettivo quello di  valorizzare, attraverso la fotografia, la memoria storica di Roma facendo raccontare l’Urbe ai suoi cittadini.

Un romanzo fotografico raccontato attraverso immagini d’epoca e fotografie inedite di amatori e professionisti, artisti emergenti e semplici osservatori.

“AnvediRoma” invita i cittadini a partecipare ad un percorso che si snoda in più appuntamenti.

Quattro Mostre nel mese di novembre in quattro luoghi-simbolo del Centro Storico.

Le mostre ospiteranno scatti inediti di Roma, selezionati attraverso il Concorso Fotografico “AnvediRoma” assieme a fotografie storiche  reperite grazie alla preziosa collaborazione di un importante partner, Biblioteche di Roma, che ha aperto le porte dell’archivio digitalizzato “Album di Roma”.

At the SharePoint Conference in Las Vegas, Paul Andrew gave a thorough overview of the new features for developers in SharePoint 2010.

This is my modest attempt to convey Paul’s presentation in a simple blog post. Please note that the session contained a huge amount of information and I probably (definitely!) didn’t manage to take it all in. Read on at your own risk…

Development environment and tools

Traditionally, the path to your first SharePoint hello world-web part is littered with technical obstacles in the shape of tedious installation problems, Windows Server 2003 blues, virtual server nightmares etc. No more. Now you just need your laptop to develop SharePoint applications.

The box

SharePoint developers no longer need to run a Windows 2003 Server. In fact, SharePoint and the development tools can now be installed directly on Windows 7 or Vista (service pack 1). Either versions of SharePoint can be used, i.e. SharePoint Foundation (formerly WSS) or SharePoint Server.

The operating system must be 64 bit since SharePoint 2010 only runs in a 64 bit environment.

SharePoint on a desktop operating system is just for developers and not for running a production environment.

Visual Studio 2010

Many of SharePoint 2010’s new features can be accessed from inside Visual Studio 2010. Also, quite a few third-party add-ons may not be needed anymore as the functionality is now covered by Visual Studio.

Highlights:

• Built-in designers for:
• Web parts
• BCS (formerly BDC)
• Workflows
• Package and deploy SharePoint projects
• Generate WSPs
• View SharePoint sites in server explorer
• Integration to Team Foundation Server
• Support for SharePoint sandboxed solutions
• WSPs from SharePoint Designer can be imported (including workflows)
• Build workflow steps for SharePoint Designer
• SharePoint Business Connectivity Services support
• New events projects templates

General improvents

Developer dashboard

A developer dashboard can be displayed automatically at the bottom of every page. The DD displays valuable information about how the page is generated, for instance:

• Timing and duration of events
• Database queries (even the ones SharePoint does in the background)

The DD is activated with the follow stsadm command:

stsadm –o setproperty –pn developer-dashboard –pv ondemand

Coding

Coding for SharePoint just got slightly easier due to the many improvements in .NET framework 4.0 and SharePoint 2010.

Below is a rundown of some of the new features:

• LINQ for SharePoint
• After-synchronous events
• New event types:
• Site-scoped events
• Web creation events
• Workflow improvements:
• Initiation and association forms in Visual Studio
• New design user interface for workflows in SharePoint Designer
• Use Visio 2010 to design workflows
• SharePoint UI can now be saved as a template
• WSP is now the unified developer format – works in site collections and machine

Improvements to lists

In SharePoint 2007, lists can cause any developer headaches. Hopefully, the new list architecture in SharePoint 2010 will solve this. Below is an overview of some of the improvements:

• Validation with Excel-like Formula – forms can be validated using simple syntax
• Lookup to multiple columns
• Lookup fields have true relations which ensure proper deletion (transaction-style)
• List index auto-creation
• Scalability and performance vastly improved:
• Lists and folders can now contain a million elements
• Document libraries can contain 10 million documents
• List query throttling
• Lists views no longer based on CAML but XSL-T. Queries still use CAML

Ribbon and Dialog framework

The ribbon we know (and some love) from Microsoft Office is now used in SharePoint 2010.

Some of the highlights:

• Custom actions can be embedded in the ribbon
• The ribbon is context sensitive
• The SharePoint out-of-the-box forms are replaceable
• New web dialog functionality:
• A dialog floats on top of the SharePoint page and is used to get input from the user
• Fully programmable

Silverlight 3

Silverlight plays an important part in SharePoint 2010 and is used in many of the improved UI elements. From a developer’s point of view, these are the highlights:

• Built-it and customisable media player web part
• List and site creation from within Silverlight
• Office web applications run in Silverlight
• Client object model – call SharePoint APIs from within Silverlight
