gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/dropbox.list

y copiar el siguiente contenido en él

deb http://linux.getdropbox.com/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://linux.getdropbox.com/ubuntu jaunty main

sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install nautilus-dropbox

I have stumbled on a very nice product which I want to share in this post. It is a online storage system named Wuala. It is a desktop client via which you can upload files to be stored online.

Initially you get 1GB of online space for free. As users we always want more space, so either you can buy more space online or interestingly you can trade some of your local disc space for online space. It has a very user friendly and sleek interface. Security is a key feature of this online storage system. All of the files which are uploaded are automatically encrypted before the actual upload which makes your content very secure. A sample screen shot of my wuala client:

Now with such a online storage system all your important files and pictures can be stored reliably, no more crying for lost data when your system crashes.

Technically it is a fascinating product as it is distributed file storage system which is based on peer to peer systems. If anyone is interested to know more about the technology behind the product I recommend watching this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xKZ4KGkQY8

Not only file storage, it has a social side to it as well where you can have friends added and share folders with them.

So now without any further do go and explore for yourself. Happy online storing and sharing !!

Distributed computing is not a new concept – one of the most famous examples is the SETI proje

Distributed computing is not a new concept – one of the most famous examples is the SETI project which uses spare computing cycles on regular computers to search for intelligent life in space. Peer-to-peer filesharing has also gotten a bad rap especially from the carrier community, which allows users to exchange files using their full bandwidth pipes without relying on centralized servers. And online backup services like Xdrive (now defunct), Pownce, and box.net are well known to users looking to back up their content online, which provides them with access to their content from any location which is important from a disaster recovery perspective. Now, Swiss startup Wuala (rhymes with Voila, www.wua.la) is now looking to bring the advantages of peer-to-peer filesharing (namely lower overhead costs for the provider) to the online storage game.

How does the service work? Starting from a regular web browser, users can choose files or folders that they’d like to backup to the cloud. Once the files are synchronized, users can then share these files with others (friends lists can be pulled from Skype and/or Facebook), but by default, files that you upload are only accessible to you. Is there a concern that files stored out on someone else’s machine may be viewable by others? There’s always a concern in a distributed environment, but Wuala claims that the files pieces are safe. The data itself is always encrypted using 2048 bit RSA for the key exchange and 128 bit AES for the data encryption, which isn’t bad (regular secure transmissions to banking sites currently use 1024 bit RSA).

The service provides a default of 1GB of online storage, but additional storage can be purchased or can be “traded” – by reserving a chunk of local hard drive space that you make available for other to use, your “online storage” capacity also rises accordingly. This model is well thought out in my view, because it provides a benefit for opening access to your own bandwidth and hard drive space to others. The challenge comes as carriers start to implement bandwidth caps, as opening up 50GB for others to use could result in overage charges in no time.

The big question is what’s the business model for the company. While Wuala thinks that there could be some money in terms of purchased extra storage or advertising, it’s not quite clear at present how this gets monetized. But it is an interesting idea that one of the major Internet companies could be interested in if it takes off.

The implications of the technology are the fascinating parts of this story.

With peer to peer filesharing under attack in areas like the U.K., this type of service not only encrypts transfers, but the private network aspect of it as well makes it much harder for industry spies to set up traps for users to get IP addresses or to put bad content out there. Private peer to peer networks (with contacts added through Facebook in particular) could be the next generation of BitTorrent.

The legality of this becomes much trickier as well. A user could upload many gigabytes of data up on this service, essentially backing up their entire media collection. If that user then wanted to share the content with friends, the user could just give them their password. In this case, if the friends then sync the content back to their own computers, is there any way for authorities to detect the pirating of content? This becomes very much akin to “tape trading” in the early days of content piracy.

The commercial implications of this could be very practical as well, as an enterprise version of this type of software could be used to allow a corporation to spread its backups across multiple sites and even to a group of companies that aren’t competing with each other. This is analogous to giving a spare key to a neighbour automatically, and could be a way of fulfilling disaster recovery planning requirements.

This new service is especially noteworthy as it demonstrates that P2P technologies may have very valid applications outside of content distribution (BitTorrent) and voice calling (Skype). This presents the carrier community with a quandary of sorts – with an increasing number of encrypted data streams travelling on their data networks, can these carriers effectively police content, as they’re trying to do in the U.K.? While carriers will in the near-term be able to impose bandwidth caps + overages on their customers, longer-term, consumers will increasingly be drawn to Internet service providers than can provide them with better value with unlimited bandwidth caps or at least as Google suggests, unlimited volume but guaranteed minimum bandwidth rates – an improved total cost of ownership so to speak.

In summary, the launch of Wuala demonstrates that businesses looking to leverage peer-to-peer filesharing are emerging, and distributed storage could be an important element as cloud computing becomes an important theme in the medium to long-term. And for the carriers, more legal applications from over-the-top service providers is a negative as Wuala could significantly boost data consumption from end users without providing any additional revenue to the carriers – a trend that seems unlikely to reverse itself any time soon.

On a dual-core 64 bit 3 gig AMD processor (A8V-E deluxe motherboard) while running it uses about 3-4

On a dual-core 64 bit 3 gig AMD processor (A8V-E deluxe motherboard) while running it uses about 3-4% CPU time. No significant RAM footprint. I have ‘lost’ internet connection during startup because it wants to connect. What does? the virtual drive and the virtual microsoft board, of course. I’ve taken it off startup (I’m on 7/1 DSL, so it’s fast) and since the Wuala program isn’t hogging everything trying to connect to the internet and Windows at the same time…the boot time has merely been reduced by about 90 seconds. The response practically reminds me of dialup. I’m getting close to the end of my testing on it.

I would use it to connect to others like me… [oregonnerd--gmail] I do have invitations.

More on this: it looks like a drive to Windows (or whatever, as in Power Desk) and can be shared. How different this is from other applications I don’t see as yet–other than the ease of file transfers. I have 15 invitations, apparently. I’m oregonnerd and I’m a gmail user. I wouldn’t use it as yet for online backup, but it might be the new…WordPress?

I’ll check out the suggested tag for online storage and do some research. I was simply interested to see the Asus appear on the market again, with a true reminiscence of the old IBM 8100/dumb terminal operating model.

For the average reader, I’d say don’t try this for now. I do actually have a Norton Ghost type backup in the wings if it truly gets serious. It is still in alpha stage, so I’m not providing links.

www.mail.com is one of the lesser-known online mailbox offerings, that’s been around since the days of Compuserve. The download seems quite harmless, and the load of spam that used to come with my old address (no longer available because of suffix) doesn’t now, which probably means better AI type screening.
