What a long, boring day… 3 long lessons with basically nothing to do. Worst is the English C c

What a long, boring day… 3 long lessons with basically nothing to do.
Worst is the English C class I had in the afternoon, I have to write an academic paper, 6 pages and I have no idea on how to start.
My topic is about how the evolution of martial arts of the 20th and now 21st century has gone.
But where to start, how to find and construct the information is the biggest mystery…I have no idea.

I wanna especially take up the topic about MMA and the UFC.
Personally, I am no fan of MMA, also known as mixed martial arts, and when I watch the UFC matches… I get like…what the fuck is this?

In my opinion MMA is nothing but brutes just pounding the living fuck out of one another with ruthless kicking and punching, and then they know some good wrestling moves on the ground…but nothing more, no technique, no dicipline and most importantly; no honour.
This isnt real martial arts, for there is no ART in this sport, or blood sport as I call it.
No, I prefer the traditional Wushu and all those other traditional east asian martial arts, which I feel is the true artforms of combat and selfdefense.

I would like to give a tip for a good movie; ‘Wushu’ from 2008 starring and directed by Sammo Hung, produced by Jackie Chan and introdcuing the rising wushu stars Wenjie Wang and Fengchao Liu, seen on the above pic with Jackie himself.
Great movie about a bunch of kids growing up at a wushu academy, learning about life and wushu when they ultimately must use their power to defeat evil.
It is kinda B, but the acting is good and very, very well choreographed, and the Wushu competition scenes are breathtaking.

Though, to change to another subject from all the violence; I created a little but very nice playlist on Spotify, filled with some of my personal favorite love songs ^^
-So just download the playlist HERE and enjoY~~

Dragon Set – ‘Lung’ The Dragon Set picks up on the Chi developed in the Snake Set

Dragon Set – ‘Lung’ The Dragon Set picks up on the Chi developed in the Snake Set and further develops it into internal power. The Spirit of the Dragon is one of elusiveness. The Dragon will disappear and reappear in defense and counter attack. What this means is that when confronted with an adversary, the Dragon will calmly wait for the attack and once launched, will move out of the way with confusing footwork patterns and counter attacks. One second the Dragon is there, the next he is gone as he ‘rides the wind’. In contrast to the Tiger and Leopard, the Dragon prefers not to use hard blocking, but rather avoids and redirects the attack of the enemy. The Dragon Set is an internal set that develops and uses internal strength, as opposed to the primarily external physical strength of the Tiger and Leopard Sets. The Dragon Set is performed at a slower speed than the Tiger, Leopard and Crane Sets, without much emphasis on physical strength, but rather on focusing and emitting internal power directed by the mind and spirit (intent). However, since one cannot have internal strength without outer physical development and chi development, one has the preceding four sets. Internally, the Dragon Set takes the chi and jing developed from the other animal sets and adds a coiling and spiraling movement to it, to imitate how a Dragon is imagined to move. The effect of this spiraling, is to reach a high level of internal power which supercharges the outward expression of jing – Fa Jing (exploding/penetrating power). The Dragon Set uses as its main arsenal, the Dragon Claw to trap, grab, twist and dislocate the limbs of the enemy and the Dragon Palm to deliver devastating internal power strikes to the adversary’s vital points. The Dragon practitioner also uses his finger tips for pin point accuracy strikes to vital areas such as the eyes, throat and acupuncture points. The Dragon Set develops coiling and twisting energy of an internal nature which flows to the external where it manifests as a powerful Fa Jing energy. Spiritually, the Dragon Set is a composite of the spiritual qualities of the preceding four animals resulting in a synergism where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This quality is very hard to describe, but can be compared to the enlightenment sought by the traditional Chan Buddhist Monks of the Shaolin Temple.

Wushu and I go back a long way. It has undoubtedly been a significant part of my life. From AiTong,

Wushu and I go back a long way. It has undoubtedly been a significant part of my life. From AiTong, to HC, to Ajc and now nus, different clubs seem to offer me different things.

AiTong introduced me to wushu, though I was only attracted by the misinformed impression that it was all about fighting. It helped me, to a small extent though, to realise my talent in it, albeit very little. And it is enough to keep me going as I entered the secondary school phase.

HC was where I was introduced to wushu as a competitive form. There were rigorous trainings and slack, self-planned trainings, like weights sessions at the gym which was located conveniently near to the LAN shop. Yet, for almost the first time, I grew with a whole batch of people whom I considered to be passionate about the sport. My passion for wushu grew with them. I also got the chance to be someone else’s senior, guiding them in the same sport from a very naive and inexperienced point of view. At the same time, I got closer to the AiTong wushu alumni members, who were as equally passionate about the sport.

Then I continue to trod on life’s path via the JC route. I knew I wanted to continue wushu wherever I was. I had an aspiration to become a top wushu exponent, something which lost out to the laziness in me. I was introduced to other forms of wushu during the JC days, those considered traditional routines, or outside the modern contemporary from that I have always been exposed too. There was a little lion dance too, though not too my liking. And not to mention friends that I still find laughter and joy in. Nevertheless, it was there I decided that wushu should be an enjoyable sport, and people should have fun while training.

NS broke the momentum.

I wanted to try something new in NUS, but I still went back to wushu. The wushu beginners were the oldest I ever come across, yet I was pleasantly surprised at the strong interest of many of them. Within three months, there were performances and competition amidst the crazy academic life. For once, I experienced in a multi-racial form, Indians, Chinese, Koreans and Germans. It was a refreshing and surprising change.

At this point of time, I see my previous juniors reaping the rewards of their passion and hard work, and attributing their small successes who their seniors who inspired them. Not sure if I’m one of them, because there were many who would fit the bill, for I myself was really inspired by a few of my own seniors too. But nevertheless, I felt happy. This is probably what I want, for others to enjoy what I am able to enjoy too.

I might not be a good wushu exponent but I feel I should be able to commit to, minimally, guiding others to find the satisfaction that I derive from wushu all these years, be it having accomplished wushu achievements or finding fun from the sport itself.

JIAYOU!

My last post was about my interview for the CCTV show “Up Close.” That was on saturday,

My last post was about my interview for the CCTV show “Up Close.” That was on saturday, and the next day was the annual Peking University International Cultural Festival. The dance/ song/ Wushu performance that I had been rehearsing for 2 weeks had finally come. Our performance was the first one, the kick off performance, and it was filmed by CCTC4. The performance went pretty well, although I felt my broadsword could have been a little better. We performed on a giant stage in a stone courtyard outside of Beida’s big auditorium. The actual auditorium lobby served as a kind of inside backstage area. After the 3-4 minute performance was over, it felt kind of good to get it over with, and not have to go to any more rehearsals. although I knew I would miss hanging out with all my new friends. After the performance, in the backstage area a lady came up to interview me. She made me wait while some other dude came and briefly set up a TV camera. Unfortunately, when the interview began, it was disaster. The stupid lady wasn’t very close to me, and the backstage area was very loud with other students preparing for the next performance. The lady was talking too softly, and too quickly, and I could hardly understand anything she said. I was also kind of nervous, so my answers turned out stilted and stuttery. I’m not even sure if I was answering her inaudible questions. All I remember is, after she left, thinking “Sweet, I just failed my first Chinese interview” haha.

Jack, his girlfriend and Richard came to the international day, although I think they missed my first performance. We hung out at the festival for a few hours, going to all the different booths and doing fun activities. Jack then told me that I should go back to my dorm, eat some food and rest a little before my next performance at 2:20.

When I came back a little later, I met up with Jack and Richard again, and they helped me sharpen a few of my techniques for my performance, a solo ditangquan routine. Richard then helped me stretch and warm up backstage. When it was my turn, the host asked me a question in Chinese (which I thankfully answered), and then I performed. I was performing on behalf of America, so the US coordinator asked me to choose an American song. I chose the song “Come With Me” by Day 26 (which is the band P Diddy created for his TV show “Making the Band 4″). I just realized that I really like performing to Day 26… I remember freshman year of college I always used to perform to their song “Exclusive.” Go figure.

The performance went pretty well, and afterwards, Jack said he had an english class to go to so he had to leave. Richard said he was going to go to an English learning school in nearby Zhongguancun shopping district, and I think he wanted me to go with him, so I agreed to. It was good, and we got to hang out and talk in both Chinese and English. After he went to his school, a giant corporation called New Oriental, we went to one of his favorite noodle places. Richard treated me to some chicken noodle soup and it was really good. Afterwards he took a bus back to his University.

The second day of TV filming wasn’t quite as exciting as the first day (since it was a big event where everything was filmed), but it was still a lot of fun. I got to see the booths from many different countries, some of which I had never even heard of. Even Krygzstan had a booth. Krygzstan. I got to hang out with my Thai friends who are my new favorite people who I met during the International performance rehearsals. The next day, I played basketball with one of them, a guy named Adi. He’s a 3rd year student at Beida majoring in Chinese, and he is from Thailand. His english is also good, but he prefers to speak in Chinese I think, so better practice for me. He’s actually really good at basketball, and a really funny and nice guy too. He invited me to this Thai students cultural event on Halloween which I plan to go to, with this other Thai girl I met named B. It sounds like fun!

Meanwhile, I’ve started training Wushu 5 times a week with Jack and Richard. Right now Richard has been training me in broadsword, and also some gymnastics. On thursday, after Tai Chi class I took the subway to a small college called Zhongguo Jingji Daxue (China Economics University) to give a talk to some students. I did this as a favor to a friend of Richard’s, since he was also going. When I got to the subway station, the students who were supposed to meet me got there 10 or 15 minutes late, forcing me to wander around and talk to a random cabby. When I got to the school, the talk was a disappointment (as I knew it would be). Although they welcomed me, giving me a flower, some tea, and applauding at nearly every word I said, the students were all too afraid to ask me any questions, so Richard and I spoke a little about Wushu (he spoke much longer than I did!) Then after the talk was over, we went to have dinner with a few students (which I felt obligated to do). The dinner also sucked, since the students thought I wouldn’t understand if they spoke to me in Chinese, so they chose to ignore me instead. I felt this to be very rude, and I really did not enjoy myself. The only plus was that I got a free dinner. There are so many small customs in China that they take for granted that I should know, although in reality it is hard for me to know all of them. For instance, when you toast, especially if you are toasting with someone older than you, your glass must touch theres at a lower level in order to show respect. Also, they asked me several times to drink beer. I finally had to explain haltingly that in America, if athletes exercise every day, they shouldn’t drink alcohol. That was the best I could give them. In America, if you don’t want to drink the beer, it’s ok, it’s your own choice. Also, in America, if you don’t have time to have dinner with people, they respect that. In China, if you say that, they take it personally, so I felt obligated to go out with these strangers, even though I had a quiz the next day. The result was that I stayed up until 1am studying. I better get some good guanxi from this (relationship/ respect/ favors, kind of all intertwined in the same concept).

The only really cool part was that I got to hang out with Richard, which was fun. This is what resulted.

Tonight, I went out to dinner with my friend Xie Fu Lin, the personal trainer from the gym. He is a really cool guy. And the best part is, somehow, when he speaks Chinese, I can understand nearly every word he says. That doesn’t happen with all Chinese people! But we communicate very well, using only Chinese. And if I don’t understand a word, he whips out his cell phone, which has a Chinese to English translator, and bam, there’s a new vocab word for me. I’ve learned a lot of vocab from him! Tonight I learned the word for temperature, floor/ story of a building, substitute (one object for another), slang for bus, and the term for paying the bill at a restaurant. He’s really nice, and he’s also in really good shape and was a Sanda major in college. The restaurant was supposed to be a Pho place, and I wanted to introduce him to some Vietnamese cuisine, but unfortunately they only had 2 or 3 real Vietnamese dishes, so we ordered some Malaysian food, which was still really good, and new to him.

Ok, that’s all for tonight. I have to wake up at 6am tomorrow to meet Richard at his school at 8 for training. We are going to train at a different Wushuguan at the school Beihang. I heard the facilities are pretty nice, so we’ll see. Time to try to get a little sleep!

So, I haven’t updated the blog lately, but there is a reason: I have been super busy! The bigg

So, I haven’t updated the blog lately, but there is a reason: I have been super busy! The biggest thing that has been taking up my time have been rehearsals for Chinese television! Yes, that’s right, after performing at the PKU Idol singing competition (where I gave a special Wushu Performance), some people at the school asked me to perform Wushu for PKU’s official International Cultural performance. So of course I said yes!

For the last two weeks, from about monday through friday, I have been going to rehearsals for the performance. First, they always feed us dinner. And it’s a pretty nice, banquet style dinner (there are about 30-40 students participating too). Afterwards, we practice for 1 to 2 hours. We are all doing a group dance (the choreography is pretty bad, and we have to dance with these red velvet handkerchiefs with gold sequins on them). There are 8 students who are the “stars” of the performance, and they dance and sing in front (actually lip synching to pre-recorded vocals). Two of them also play different horns (which are also pre-recorded on the soundtrack). Then, in the middle of the song, during a break in the singing, me and another Russian dude come out and perform Wushu simultaneously. I do Broadsword, and he does Shaolin Kung Fu. He’s pretty good, and a really nice guy. His name is Dimitri, and he doesn’t really speak english so we speak Chinese to each other. Seemingly every rehearsal, they organizer of the performance would make me change my routine. At first, I thought I was performing by myself. Then I learned I was performing at the same time as someone else, for 30 seconds. Then, he told us to perform for 40 seconds. Then, he told us to do 20 seconds of Tai Chi and 20 seconds of Wushu! Good thing I started learning Tai Chi last week!

Speaking of the organizer, that guy is a real character. We call him Wang Laoshi (“Teacher Wang”) and he is a hulking man: old, sweaty, taller than me, and also much fatter. He has kind of a rough manner about him (he loves grabbing my arm tightly and dragging me to different places), and he yells a lot. He actually reminds me of the character Mr. Wilson from the comic Dennis the Menace, because every practice, he is guaranteed to yell “Baai Loonnng!!!!!” at least 2 to 3 times. As soon as I hear his screaming, I come running from whatever corner I’ve been in doing the splits or whatever, to listen to him ramble Chinese gibberish at me. His Beijing accent is thick so a lot of the time I don’t understand what he’s telling me.

But despite the tediousness and time consuming nature of the rehearsals, I can’t really complain. Firstly, they give us free food, and pay us 20 kuai per practice (which is less than $3… but hey that’s almost a day’s worth of food in China). Also, they gave me brand new yellow and silver Wushu silks to wear for the performance (and I get to keep them). Then, last week, at around 7:45 am, I got a caltl from Wang Laoshi. “Come to the International Students Office! We need you to try on more clothes!” he said in his characteristic gruff tone. “I have class from 8am to 12pm today, and a mid term after that.” I told him. “Okay, you’re classes are in the Language building right? I’ll come meet you there.” He said. Okay. So at 9:50, as soon as the bell rings for my first class to get out, he opens my classroom door! “Bai Long!!!” I rush to get my things, and he leads me outside to where his SUV is parked right in front of the door to the building. I have a 20 minute break before my next class, and he drives me to the International Students Office (which is about a 5 minute walk…) and has me try on some cargo pants, a red Peking University t shirt, and some new Air Force One shoes (which is the uniform the 8 “stars” are wearing. I didn’t get one earlier since I am wearing Wushu silks). “Do they fit?” He asks, and when I respond yes he says quickly “Ok ok good, take them, I’m giving them as a gift.” Woah, sweet. The pants aren’t that great… but the shirt, and new white Forces? I’ll take them! Afterwards he drives me back to the Language Building, and I’m still early for my next class Like I said, can’t really complain. Also, I have met tons of great people from all over the world. New friends from Thailand, Congo, Nigeria, France, Bolivia, Tajikistan, and even more. I really like my new Thai friends especially, they are really nice!

Last week, I also learned that in addition to this performance, I would also be doing a special appearance on a Chinese talk show. We had a preliminary meeting, and the taping was to be today. Luckily, yesterday I had the good fortune of getting food poisoning. I am being sarcastic of course. I started feeling sick in the early afternoon, and after a few trips to the bathroom, realized I had a problem. I’ve only been eating at the cafeterias too! I’m not sure what it was, but either way, I was confined to my bed for almost the entire day. And the day before my big moment on TV! I had to miss my meeting with my language partner, miss Tai Chi class, and also cancel dinner plans with Xie Fu Lin (my personal trainer friend form the gym). Luckily, I took some medicine and felt a lot better today, rested and ready to go. A bus was going to take us to the CTV studio, and I got to bring some friends along, so I asked Jack, my Wushu coach to come, and he brought his brothers Richard and William, and William’s wife. I discovered when I got there that the program was for CCTV 9, the international channel, and it was going to be filmed in English. I was a little disappointed I wouldn’t be able to spit some Chinese, but I guess it make it easier for me. When I got to the studio, we chilled for a little bit in a waiting room, and one of the producers got me to show me where I would perform. When I saw the stage, I was horrified to see that the stage tiny, and made of glass. There was a space down below where they wanted me to perform, and it was about 10 square feet. The straight sword form I had been practicing specially for this show was now useless, since I had absolutely no room to move. I told them I would be doing broadsword, and I quickly had to improvise some movements to perform. I decided to just showcase some fast broadsword techniques, and I would be able to do a tornado kick to the splits from standing, as well as a side fall. Before filming, Jack and Richard helped me warm up and clarify some of my movements. We then got some makeup, and the filming began. First the host (who apparently is a famous Chinese anchorwoman) interviewed three other PKU students: a girl from Korea, a guy from Bangladesh, and a guy from Japan. They showed film clips of the girl hosting a PKU sports program, and the Bangladeshi guy spitting some Chinese for last summer’s Chinese Bridge competition (an international language competition held in Beijing). Then the Japanese guy wrote some Chinese calligraphy.

After they were done, it was my turn to be interviewed. I went up with another German girl, and the hostess interviewed us with basic questions about what we do. I told her a little bit about my Wushu background, and what brought me to China. I then demonstrated some basic techniques of staff, straightsword and broadsword. She asked “so, can you give us a performance of one of these?” and I said yes, I can perform some daoshu (broadsword techniques, and yes this exchange was pre planned). We had to redo the take actually so she could ask me “Do you need to prepare anything?” so I could tell her I had to change into my silks. So I changed quickly, and performed in their tiny space (to some music I had selected from the Van Damme movie “Kickboxer”). The performance turned out pretty well, and she asked me a few closing questions afterwards. Then I went and changed back into my regular clothes (made sure to sport my new bootleg Jordans that day) while the German girl sang a Chinese song, opera style.

The last segment was interviewing a few other students, and asking others in the audience about their role in the upcoming cultural festival. The show was fun, and everything went well. Afterwards, everyone told me my performance was really great. Jack and Richard were super excited and jumping up and down, telling me my performance was so awesome. They said they were worried because of the space, but I did a great job. We took some pictures, then returned to the bus which took us back to the Beida campus. Afterwards, Jack, Richard, William, his wife and myself had some lunch, then they went back home. They said they are going to come again tomorrow morning for my performance at the cultural festival, where I will be doing the dance/ tai chi/ broadsword performance, and also a ditang form later for the USA performance time slot. The dance will also be filmed for CCTV (channel 4 I believe). I think today turned out very successfully, I can’t wait for tomorrow!

Today I finally had my first Wushu class here in Beijing! I was supposed to start yesterday, but Jac

Today I finally had my first Wushu class here in Beijing! I was supposed to start yesterday, but Jack Zhang (my new coach) said he was a little sick so we couldn’t train. Today however, we agreed to meet at 9am. I got there really early to make sure I was on time and had enough time to warm up. While I was waiting outside, Jack’s kung fu brother/ roommate Richard stopped by to ask his friend something at the sports center. I asked if he was going to train with us, and he said not today, but he told me to “work hard!” Outside the Wushu hall was a different instructor, and I talked to him a little bit. He had a little kid with him, and when I told the instructor I was from America, the kid said “Woah! America!!!” Then when I went back outside to wait for Jack, a few other kids got dropped off by their parents, and the first one came out. He told his friends “hey, guess what country he is from!” One of the kids said “I dont know.” So the first one replied “He’s from America!!!” to which the other responded “Wow! He’s really tall!” XD

Jack actually got there a few minutes late, and when we went up to the Wushu room the kids already had started training with the different instructor in the same room, but we still got a whole carpet to ourselves. The training room is really big, with two competition size Wushu carpets, a giant Taekwondo mat (equal to the size of both carpets), a huge wrestling matt (same size), two Sanda leitais and a fully equipped raised kickboxing ring. Jack said there was another Canadian student who was supposed to come today, but he was sick. I hope he is sick every day because I got some awesome training! We did a lot of stretching, which is really good (for some reason I feel like I’ve gotten less flexible since I’ve come to Beijing, so hopefully this will help me). Then we started doing basic techniques, kicks and jump. With each one I realized how much of a scrub I am. Even during stretching, my legs and ankles were so much less flexible than Jack’s. Of course he can kick his forehead with his stretch kick. Also, for some reason I really sucked at Wushu today, more so than usual. I think it was partially nerves, and also partially because I trained for 2-3 hours yesterday so I was kind of sore. I even messed up my aerial on the first try (although I got it on the subsequent ones). Jack was very encouraging though, saying many other foreign students can’t even do the techniques I did. He gave me lots of excellent little corrections, such as pointing my right foot more when I do side falls, keeping my legs straighter for kip ups, not traveling too much during body turns, etc. That is exactly the kind of advice I need.

We trained for 2 hours, and afterwards, Jack said he couldn’t train for much longer because he had to finish translating a short speech for one of his teachers who was going to America. He asked if I could help him a little, and I said of course. So, we went back to his dorm, where he had two cups of zhou waiting (a type of porridge). He said one was for me, and gave it to me to drink. I think he bought it in advance for me and was hoping I would come to help him. He had already translated some of it, so we worked together, Jack taking the basic meaning from Chinese, and me helping him find more suitable English words. After a while, he got a phone call, then told me that we could go to his brother William’s apartment and eat lunch, because he wanted to cook for me. Woah!

On the way, Jack asked if I wanted to see his Wushu store. I told him I didn’t know he had a Wushu store. He said “What!? Really I never told you? Yea I have a Wushu supply store!” So we went to his store. Well, I’m not sure if we went to the actual storefront… because where we went was some kind of musty underground apartment complex. The air was thick with shower steam in the thin hallway, and there were skinny shirtless Chinese guys hanging around the hallway, along with various women and children. We got to his “store” which was kind of like a bedroom (since it had a bed covered by a hanging curtain, and a desk). It also had shelves of Wushu gear: various swords, three section staffs, a bunch of good looking red Wushu silk uniforms, pants, shirts, etc. I told him I needed Wushu pants, so he found a pair that would be a good size for me. I was hoping he’d give me a discount… the pants were 45 kuai (US $6.50), and they were just low quality training pants, so I felt that might have been a little expensive. But he also sold me a t-shirt for his Wushu club (“Beijing Brothers International Wushu Club”) and that was only 15 kuai ($2.20, which he said he discounted for me from 30 kuai) so overall I think the deal was not bad. Into the “store” wandered William, Jack’s brother. (I’m not sure if they are real brothers or just Kung fu brothers. I know Richard is not Jack’s real brother). William was, naturally, not wearing a shirt. Just like the first time I met Richard. He was really nice though, and his English was as good or better than Jack’s. I also met William’s girlfriend. Apparently they are getting married soon! I’m not sure if William does kung fu or not, he is not buff like Jack.

Afterwards, we went to an apartment, which I think belonged to Jack’s girlfriend. She was really nice, and we went into her bedroom to finish translating the speech (we only had 1 paragraph left). At first Jack told me I could just translate the last paragraph, and he would look over it later, because he needed to cook. Well, that didn’t happen because the speech was all about various majors offered at Jack’s sports university (including majors like recreational sports management and practical psychology) so I really couldn’t read a lot of the characters. Luckily William came in, and said he could translate it first, then I could look over it. So me and Jack, as well as Jack’s girlfriend and Richard (who had just arrived) watched a super trippy old Jet Li movie on TV. I looked it up later, apparently it is called “Legend of the Red Dragon” (I’ve seen it in video stores before, just never watched it). All I know is the Jet Li and a kid playing his son spent a lot of time fighting some invincible severe burn victim who drove a Road Warrior-esque armored car (despite the fact that it was a period film). The whole time William was typing up a storm, and when he finished it I got up to take a look but he said “no no Bai Long, it’s fine, finish watching the movie first, you can do it later.” Haha ok. After the Jet Li movie was another, older movie, which William gave me extensive backstory about (Japanese invading China – a really common theme for Chinese movies).

After that, it was time to eat. It seems like William’s girlfriend ended up doing most of the cooking (with Jack’s girlfriend pitching in a little), and we had a big meal, with zhou (rice porridge), mantou (steamed rice bread), sauteed cauliflower, a sauteed turnip dish, a zucchini dish, and tomatoes and eggs. I got to eat a lot of food, it was very fresh and authentic! The whole time we all chatted in a mix of Chinese and English. Jack said he had to eat fast because he needed to meet with his teacher to give her the speech, but I should eat slowly and take as much time as I wanted. I ended up chilling with Richard for a while and talking a lot about martial arts, American colleges, and learning English. He really wants to go to an American college, but his English isn’t good enough yet. I learned that he is a graduate from Beijing Sports University, and a national Sanda champion. He said he used to teach at BSU, and they pay their coaches so little that most of them really don’t care and do a poor job (he used to be a coach there so he was included). I felt even more grateful for the detailed private training I got from Jack that day.

I had a great time today, and I feel very good about this training. I think I will definitely be sore tomorrow, and I think Jack is the right person who can really help me advance with my Wushu. It’s also great to develop a relationship with him and his extended family, and I love meeting new friends. They help me with Wushu, Chinese, and I in turn can help them with English and finding info about American Universities. I hope we get to eat together more too! I am really excited for more training! This is the real Chinese experience, the reason I came here!
