I purchased Microsoft Office 2007 via The Ultimate Steal last winter. The software is provided as a download through Digital River – but it is available for only 30 days after making the purchase.

So what happens if you lose your backup?

The order confirmation email reads:

DOWNLOADABLE PRODUCTS
Downloadable products may be accessed by looking up your order. When the order summary appears, click on the Download link next to the product name.

LOOKING UP YOUR ORDER
Go to http://store.digitalriver.com/store/msshus/DisplayHelpPage. You may also find other helpful information on this page.

Sounds promising. After signing in, it even displays a hopeful looking download button:

but clicking it returns the following:

Sorry,

It is too late to download this file. You were allowed to download within 30 days.

If you have any questions, please contact Digital River Customer Service at CustomerServices@digitalriver.com.

Fortunately, you don’t have to use this particular installer. You can use your license key to convert a trial version of Office 2007 to a full version. You can freely download the trial version from here:

http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msoffice/pub/X12-30307/X12-30307.exe

Once installed, the first thing it does is ask you for a product key. Yours is included in your order confirmation email.

If you haven’t kept that email, I think you’re out of luck.

In my experience, it’s quite an unusual thing to find a piece of good news on the front page of the paper edition of the New York Times. (Granted, it was below the fold.)

That said, I’ll take it. It’s refreshing!

Nudging Recycling From Less Waste to None

Across the nation, an antigarbage strategy known as “zero waste” is moving from the fringes to the mainstream, taking hold in school cafeterias, national parks, restaurants, stadiums and corporations.

The movement is simple in concept if not always in execution: Produce less waste. Shun polystyrene foam containers or any other packaging that is not biodegradable. Recycle or compost whatever you can.

Though born of idealism, the zero-waste philosophy is now propelled by sobering realities, like the growing difficulty of securing permits for new landfills and an awareness that organic decay in landfills releases methane that helps warm the earth’s atmosphere.

The funny thing here is that there’s a very fine thread connecting this post to the one I posted yesterday about the cell phone vs. the clown on a unicycle study at WWU.

The Times article mentions Seattle, but 90 miles north, here in Bellingham, sustainability is like the clown on a unicycle. To some extent, it’s a wonder that I even noticed the Times piece, given how much is going on here in the areas of reducing, reusing, recycling, composting, green building, alternative transportation, biodiesel, etc., and we even boast a zero-waste burger joint.

Regardless, it’s refreshing to consider how significant this is for the subject of zero-waste to make it to the cover of the Gray Lady, to consider how the massive reach of the New York Times can bring the concept to towns that have made significantly less progress concerning sustainability than Bellingham.

Refreshingly hopeful. Hope is sustaining.

There’s nothing novel about hope.

Initially I was very excited to come across a web article (LiveScience.com via Gizmodo) with this photo, shown here, of some very familiar surrounds: Red Square, on the campus of my employer, Western Washington University (WWU or Western).

Then, as I observed that this article was in response to a study conducted by WWU professor Ira Hyman, and that it will be published in the journal Applied Cognitive Psychology, I was excited, because WWU is not primarily a research institution, and so it’s great for Western to get this kind of exposure.

Then I read the article. Excitement gone.

The gist of Professor Hyman’s work is that cell phone users are dangerously distracted while on the phone, as indicated by their having not paid much attention or even noticed a clown pedaling a unicycle in Red Square.

Seriously, Professor Hyman’s got mad credentials, but I read this and I was left wondering how a holder of a PhD in Psychology could be so utterly oblivious of human behavior constantly on display in his immediate environs.

Red Square, for anyone who has spent even a short time on campus (OMG! Hyman’s been working here for 18 years!), is a magnet for exhibitionists, especially on a sunny day, leaving no doubt that WWU is a liberal arts university. And, it’s not just liberals and artists who flock to this public square to juggle, dance, play instruments, and even streak on a regular basis. Several times throughout the year we get visited by Christian evangelicals carrying, no exaggeration, 30-foot high banners that read “REPENT OR YOU WILL BURN IN HELL”, and once a year we’re visited by the so-called Genocide Awareness Project, an exhibit by a pro-life group that equates abortion with genocide, showing very large photos of aborted fetuses in order to shock people.

As a commenter at LiveScience put it, reassuring me that I’m not alone in reacting like this:

What this study doesn’t take into account is that strange people and activities happen in Red Square ALL THE TIME. We’ve learned to tune it out because the “unusual” is usual to us. I mean, I saw the unicycle guy almost every day, and things happened such as the time where a friend of mine jumped a fence, tearing down horrifying abortion billboards posted all around Red Square.

To be honest, I believe this study would have been more valid had it been conducted somewhere central and well-populated which is not as familiar with odd people and events.

Professor Hyman, if you read this, I know I’m being a little harsh, and I actually happen to agree that cell phones CAN be dangerously distracting, but mostly I’m concerned about you. Please try to get out some more, spend some time actually observing the students you teach and the kind of campus they inhabit.
I often self-deprecatingly suggest that I was the very last person in Bellingham to have discovered Death Cab for Cutie, a band that was formed here in 1997, when the members were students at Western Washington University.

And while I’m eager to hear what Death Cab will do to follow up 2008’s Narrow Stairs, members Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla seem to have other things on their minds these days. Fortunately, these other things, both of which I discovered via NPR, are cool!

First up, Chris Walla was recently featured on NPR’s Project Song series; Bob Boilen’s challenge to musicians he hand picks to write and record a song, start to finish, in 48 hours. In a Project Song first, rather than choosing a single artist or an established duo, Walla was teamed up with Jawbox’s J. Robbins, someone he’d never met or worked with in any way. The video summary of their process is a joy for a musician and music fan like myself, capturing the magic of the creative process and the joy of musical collaboration and conversation. The song’s pretty amazing for having been put together so quickly, and watching Walla and Robbins working in the studio make me long for my guitar, a microphone, and some bandmates.

Next, Ben Gibbard recently collaborated with Son Volt’s Jay Farrar on the soundtrack for an upcoming documentary titled One Fast Move or I’m Gone: Jack Kerouac’s Big Sur. This is particularly exciting to me because I love Kerouac’s writing and I used to be a big fan of Jay Farrar, back when he was in a band called Uncle Tupelo, and I liked his first Son Volt album.

What I’ve heard, sounds really good, and right now you can hear the entire album on NPR.

Also, here’s the trailer for the Kerouac film:

Almost exactly nine years ago, I became a bicycle commuter, and some missed days due to illness, injury, or ice and/or snow notwithstanding, I’m proud to say that I’m still pedaling to work, rain or shine, five days a week.

One of the things I love about being a bicycle commuter is sharing an experience with cyclists locally, here in bicycle-friendly Bellingham, and globally who ride these two-wheel contraptions for a wide variety of reasons: transportation, recreation, competition, fundraising, and activism just to name a few.

In the past week, I’ve come across three items on the web, two of them local, which reinforced my feelings of solidarity with the cycling community.

First, from one of my favorite publications, Ode Magazine, a nice big-picture piece on what the author is calling bicycle touring renaissance.

As recently as the 1980s, cycling in the U.S. was viewed as mostly for kids living on cul-de-sacs. The advent of group rides, especially charity rides, changed that in the 1990s…

Touring does take some training. But the reward, and it’s major, is a fully self-contained outing, which lets you soak up everything the universe offers and think only about routes, weather, food, water and shelter. That’s about as “sustainable” as travel can get.

Second, an arguably frivolous piece from Western Washington University’s student newspaper, The Western Front, on the pros and cons of riding a bicycle while intoxicated.

Western seniors Peter Morgan and Fred Carley like riding bikes. They also like drinking beer. On a cold and rainy night in November 2008, Morgan, Carley and a few other students officially combined the two into an event called park and ride. At each of Bellingham’s major parks, participants stop to drink a beer – or two – for a zigzagging, 25-mile bike ride, usually ending downtown…

Bicycling under the influence is illegal in some states, and was so in Washington until the 1995 Montesano v. Wells case, where the Washington state Court of Appeals determined drunk driving laws were not intended for bicycles. However, neither the ruling nor the law are well known, and rumors that bicycling drunk can get the rider in legal trouble are common among cyclists.

And finally, this past Saturday was an event that I was disappointed to miss, as it combined my beloved cycling with a fundraiser for the Pickford Film Center, the group that runs the cinema where I saw the movie I just happened to write about yesterday.

Bellingham will host a late-night cycling event known as the Moonlight Ramble on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The event will kick off with live music by The Endorphins at 9 p.m. at Western Washington University outside of the Wade King Student Recreation Center. There also will be a bike repair station, bike safety information and a variety of vendors. WWU’s Outdoor Center will be selling bike lights, which are required for the Moonlight Ramble, for $15.

The ride itself will begin at 11 p.m., and riders will go on a seven-mile tour of Bellingham starting at WWU, through Fairhaven, Boulevard Park and downtown. More experienced riders are encouraged to take a couple of laps around the route.

So, if all that doesn’t inspire you to get on your bike and ride, maybe this will:

Few know the legend of The Bionic Rapper in the United States, but this lack of knowledge cannot deny the point that Joe Stern-McGovern aka The Bionic Rapper stands not only as Japan’s greatest foreign rapper, but its greatest rapper of all time, period!

The Bionic Rapper emerged on Japan’s white hot club scene in 1988 following his stint as producer and rapper under platinum artist, Sir-Mix-A-Lot of Warner Brother’s Rhyme Cartel. Upon the advice of his mentor, he purchased a ticket to the Land of the Rising Sun and history was made.

A Los Angeles native and native English speaker, Joe Stern-McGovern studied the complexities of Japanese to the point he became a master of the difficult tongue. Not only could he hold his own with the greatest of translators, Joe Stern-McGovern had the uncanny ability to bring rhyme to a country which had previously and literally no concept of rhyme whatsoever.

With a career spanning 4 years, The Bionic Rapper’s greatest point was his opening at the Tokyo Dome, a venue of the most spectacular nature, one in which he would rock the microphone in Japan, for Japanese, and in Japanese. With a non-official certification for the 500,000 plus albums of “Live at the Tokyo Dome”. Joe Stern-McGovern’s accomplishment as one of Japan’s greatest has stood the test of time, and promises to bring legend to a globally recognized name for all of time to come.

An asset to the game of hip hop, and America’s talented and unique pride and joy, The Bionic Rapper aka Joe Stern-McGovern now heads Universal Artists, International as global agent and President.

Joe Stern-McGovern is not only bringing the finest talent to the industry ever known, he has brought with him a sense of charity, placing large portions of proceeds to various AIDS, humanitarian, and global non-profit organizations in the name of the betterment of mankind.

Titel verspricht gesellschaftliche Anerkennung

Post contributed by Aaron Fairchild:

Not too long ago I gave a talk at Bloom!, a local Seattle function where sustainable business entrepreneurs have 18 minutes on the clock to tell their story, answer questions and then move on.

It is a jazzy and frenetic format, and I had a lot of fun being part of the party-like speaking event. A week or so afterwards I asked the event organizers if they received any feedback on my talk, good or bad. The response was for the most part positive, except one person who commented that I was, well, “too capitalistic.” Pause… Deep breath… Contemplative grin…

<img class="size-medium wp-image-99" title="Aaron_Fairchild_at_Bloom_event" src="http://g2bmatters.wordpress.com/files/2009/08/3430229736_f426646ccc.jpg?w=300" alt="Aaron Fairchild at Bloom!
I cut my green teeth nearly 20-years ago, at what was then, the hippy liberal University of Western Washington, taking classes on environmental justice and ethics. At the time I lived with Johnny D, an Earth First activist who used our kitchen as the hub that the local Earth First crew used to plan out their next monkey-wrenching action against the man. We thought that a career in environmentalism meant that you were either going to be an activist, an advocate in a non-profit somewhere, or an academic. No one at that time was considering capitalism’s role in the environmental movement. We considered capitalism to be the cause of our environmental problems, and not one of many remedies that can be used to cure them.

I understand where the comment after the speaking event comes from, and it continues to cause me to smile when I reflect on it. I don’t begrudge that perspective; I welcome the discussion as long as we don’t get bogged down in it. I continue to think it is amazing that there is even a discussion to be had, which is a sign of how far we have come. The fact is, markets that are allowed to run free within the regulatory framework imposed by society have efficiency, scope and scale far beyond academia, advocacy, and activism. However, we shouldn’t embrace free markets and capitalism at the expense of the others. They all need to co-exist and be cross-functional and supportive, but we must recognize that economy rules our world, and a fringe issue that is not embraced by the economy will always remain on the fringe. Until capitalism goes green, or the green movement goes capitalistic, society will continue creating brown fields, brown skies and toxic resources at the expense of future generations. Let’s take a peek into where capitalism is heading…

Daniel Goleman, the nationally known social psychologist and author of the #1 bestseller, Emotional Intelligence, recently completed a new book, Ecological Intelligence. In his book he explores how to remedy the lack of insight and understanding into the ecological impacts of the products we buy. He argues that by boosting our “ecological intelligence” we will collectively increase our understanding of the hidden ecological impacts and in so doing, bolster our resolve to improve them. He discusses how brain researchers examining purchase decisions have demonstrated that consumers’ emotional reactions to products’ ecological impacts matter for sales. Goleman examines how companies in several industries such Wal-Mart and industrial chemical production companies are already changing the way they manage their supply chains to address the need to limit their impacts and position the business to thrive in a radically transparent marketplace. He states that his mission is to, “alert businesses to a coming wave, one that will wash over any company that markets a man-made product.” He calls for “radical transparency” in the marketplace that allows consumers to be ecologically intelligent about the products they purchase.

Another new arrival on the marketplace scene is the L3C. The L3C is a “Low-Profit, Limited Liability Corporation.” This is a new type of LLC that is designed to attract private investors and philanthropists in ventures designed to provide a social benefit. An argument can be made that a new legally designated entity doesn’t need to be created in order for organizations to provide a social benefit. If a profit maximizing organization tackled the same business sector as a low-profit organization I would submit that it could provide a far greater social benefit. There are several issues that would need to be addressed to flesh out the argument, but the fact that there is an argument to be had is encouraging. The L3C is yet another sign of our progress and the nature of our progressive times.

There are more examples of capitalism gone green, from Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) to sustainable supply chain management. In fact, there are so many examples that I simply can’t mention them all, however, one example that is close to home remains. At G2B Ventures we are actively engaged in helping to support efforts in profitable environmental enterprise. We are working hard to demonstrate the value of smart energy efficient refurbishments in the residential housing market using a market-based approach that is acutely aware of public policy overlap into the sector. By being focused on profit maximization, and working with several local stakeholders to develop a market-driven premium for energy efficient homes, we will capitalize on the enhanced returns of energy efficiency to the benefit of our investors. If we can do this, we will be one more example that when green goes capitalistic, society and the environment are beneficiaries as well as the investor.

Most of us will recognize the name acetaminophen, commonly seen on the labels of generic brand alter

Most of us will recognize the name acetaminophen, commonly seen on the labels of generic brand alternatives to Tylenol. But I only recently learned of the two words’ common origin. It turns out that both names, Tylenol and acetaminophen, come from different parts of the drug’s less used chemical name, para-acetylaminophenol.
