“this isn’t music” “now the stuff in my day, THAT was music”. Sentences which are heard all too often, but is their any truth to it? Kinda, but not definatly. Here today i will list 5 reasons why it is true, and tomorrow will show some stuff from the opposing viewpoint.

At some point, (i blame nirvana) it became fashionable for musicians to spend their time just constantly compaining about their lives. Was fine for a while, but eventually you began to think “bollocks” it all became ridiculous beyond self-parody; ending up with record labels putting together good looking bands and having them complain about their uglyness. Well fuck that. Bare in mind though; i do love nirvana, and Brand New

It used to be that if you liked a band or genre of music, you instantly seemed to belong to a society, giving you a sense of purpose and belonging. This would lead to increased self-confidence and more success in life. Nowadays this has all but disappeared (bar Amanda Palmer and 30STM of course), everybody seems to listen to everything. Apart from gigs, music is not something which allows you to feel part of a community any more, not on it’s own anyway. It has to be added to other things as well. Yes, a lot of the communities were self serving dicks, and maybe this is just nostalgia, but still…

3. I heard it on the wireless back in ‘52, then read the countless interviews the day after

There’s far too much bullshit this day with musicians in relation to the media. It seems like everything you read about bands has gone through about 5 press officers beforehand, musicians are starting to believe their own hype. Which allows them to spend millions producing awful albums (i’m looking your way Axl and Korn) because they know that people will follow them no matter what.

4. Work Ethic? We don’t need no stinking work ethic!

Guns and Roses took over a decade to make an album. Most bands seem to take far too long making an album. They have to run it past the managers, the label, then a test group. It’s taking too long; just let them make an album and release it. Secondly, there’s not many long-lasting artists. Long gone are the days where people would release well over 10 albums in their career, now it’s just “release 2 albums, if you don’t reach top 10 with both; you’re history” which doesn’t give people an opportunity to develop as an artist. In this current climate, the chili peppers wouldn’t be successful; as they were shit until their 3rd album. But  it was fine; they were kept on contract and allowed to develop and grew, and turned into one of the worlds biggest bands.

Before i get started i would just like to say yes it’s already charted in the 20’s but i wanted to review it because its such a “I’m gonna shit on you and make you taste it track”. “Fight for this love” was the biggest selling single of the year so far and ok the song itself wasn’t too bad considering she’s a northern hottie with about as much talent as a frozen leg of mutton (Yeah i know she didn’t write the song). We are all expecting another little pop ditty however we get a poorly shot video, a song which lacks a chorus with any umph and about as much personality as wet flannel which is teaming with maggots. Cheryl darl ive got three words for you “HOT HOT HOT”, juxtaposed to that comment ive got another three words for you “BOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU SUCK!”

SÅ var x-factor fredagen over og det er bare 3 uker igjen til den store finalen! De gjenværende finalistene er: Shackles, Lise, Chand og Mari. Jeg heier på Shackles og Lise og har gjort det helt siden jeg så dem for første gang. Utrolig bra at de har kommet så langt!

Jeg skal prøve å overtale pappa til å få dra på X-factor finalen, for når det bare er 4 finalister igjen og 2 av de har jeg heiet på hele tiden er det vell ganske stor sjanse for at en av dem kommer til finalen. Gleder meg sykt!

Ellers så sang Lise Proud Mary av Lisa turner, og synes hun gjorde det bra. Men noen ganger fanget jeg ikke helt stemmen. Men ikke alle ganger kan være prefekt. Shackles sang Queen of the night, og ble Queens of the night. For et show! De eigde alle sammen!

Det ble duell mellom Lise og Tommy. Den som røyk ut var desverre Tommy, han kommer faktisk ut med plate, kanskje jeg skal vurdere å kjøpe den. Selv om jeg ikke heiet på han betyr det ikke at jeg likte stemmen.

She favoured tight braids during the early stages of her Girls Aloud career and now Cheryl Cole has rediscovered the look.

The X Factor judge left rehearsals last night sporting two cornrows down one side of her head with the rest of her mane pined back into a loose bun.

Dressed in gradual fade jeans, a grey blazer and the same colour shoe-boots, she stopped to sign autographs for fans as she headed home for the evening.

She was joined by a black puppy – she has famously admitted she trusts her canine companions more than husband Ashley – which she escorted out in a fluffy bag.

Cheryl’s hair has almost taken on a life of it’s on in recent weeks.

Her famous dark mane secured her a lucrative deal with L’Oreal, but the advertisements went on to attract a fierce backlash.

In the campaign for Elvive Full Restore 5, a shampoo and conditioner range, she credits the products with making her hair ‘full of life’.

But it received complaints it was ‘misleading’ because it makes little reference to her £1,000 hair extensions.

This week she swapped those famous tumbling brunette curls for a bold suicide blonde wig in the new video for her upcoming single, 3 Words.

Of course, the 26-year-old is concerned with more than just her hairstyle today – she is preparing to cheer on her X Factor proteges Lloyd Daniels and JoeMcElderry tonight as they take on Elton John and Take That.

Joe, who received a standing ovation last week by all four judges, is set to perform Elton’s Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word and Take That’s Could It Be Magic.

Lloyd will sing I’m Still Standing, appropriately enough, and A Million Love Songs.

Joe is the 13/8 favourite to scoop the £1 million recording deal while Lloyd is widely expected to be eliminated on Sunday night.

He been an ‘emotional wreck’ this week, according to producers, and has been comforted by his mentor after threatening to quit.

THIS year’s X Factor champ is facing a chart showdown with a very familiar face – series judge CHERYL COLE.

It will be a harsh welcome to the cruel world of pop for the winner, especially if it is JOE McELDERRY, who I’ve tipped for victory.

The little Geordie lad, the 4/1 X Factor favourite, is a dead cert for the Christmas No1 if he wins the grand final two weeks tomorrow.

But gentle Joe could see a very different side to his mentor Cheryl once the turkey and stuffing has all gone.

So far Chezza has protected her little protege like a tough-nut schoolkid shielding a cousin from class bullies.

But the gloves will be off when she releases 3 Words, the second single from her debut solo album of the same name, a week after The X Factor champ’s single.

In her new video Cheryl dons a platinum blonde wig, alongside WILL.I.AM, who features on the track.

A source says: “Cheryl and the record label decided to put the next single out after Christmas.

“The X Factor winner is always one of the biggest hits of the year and Cheryl will have a tough job toppling it.

Traditionally the first week of the new year is the worst for record sales, but Cheryl’s cunning record bosses have spotted a chance to grab a second No1.

In the interests of transparency , I’ll just say now that I know Emily and that we have been online buddies for quite a long time.

Okay, now that’s out of the way, I’m going to share with you my love of this book.  It wouldn’t matter whether I knew the author or not… Girl Aloud stands proud, on its own as a brilliant teenage read.

Kass Kennedy has a nightmare for a father… he wants her to enter X-Factor.  Kass can’t sing, isn’t old enough to qualify and has absolutely no desire to be famous.  All she wants is to be left to be herself.  Fat chance!  Throw in a really annoying brother, a distanced mother and a boy with brown boots… fantastic!

Girl Aloud looks from the outset as though it’s a hilarious tale about a girl fighting with her dad, falling out with her friends and lusting after a gorgeous boy.  It’s wrapped in a shocking pink cover and has shiny stuff all over it.  But I know I have taught you all better than that… never judge a book by its cover!

Girl Aloud is an incredible portrayal of a teenager living with a parent suffering from mental illness.  Kass has to deal with her father’s almost bi-polar moods and she’s teetering on a knife edge for most of the story.  She can’t just yell at him that she won’t do X-Factor because it may send him back to the pyjama wearing moper he was before… and none of the family want that!  It all rests on her shoulders, go along with his manic hare-brained scheme to keep him “up” or else disappoint him and they all have to suffer the consequences.   Girl Aloud is a dark comedy full of bittersweet self-effacing humour that I was regularly on the verge of tears for Kass and her dilemmas. The problems she has to face are so well executed that I felt the highs and lows of Kass’s problems vividly.   Not only does she have to juggle her fathers mood swings but her mother is withdrawn and as for her brother… well, he has his own troubles – and somehow Kass has to help him too!

This is an awesome novel and I was thoroughly absorbed by it (so much so, I forgot to pick my child up from school!!!).  It also features guest appearances by Simon Cowell as Kass’s dream judge… and he’s very helpful in his commenting!  It has some utterly hilarious moments as well as some heartbreaking ones – but I assure you, you’ll not be able to put it down until you see how it all turns out.

My not-so-secret sources have revealed another exclusive X Factor story from this week’s upcoming News of the World:

FORMER X Factor star Rhydian Roberts reckons Olly Murs will win the show this year because he is the most popular.

The opera ace - who came second to Leon Jackson in the 2007 series - said:  “Maybe Olly will be this year’s late bloomer; he’s looking the most likely.
“Danyl Johnson has to be my favourite at the moment though because he is the best singer, Joe McElderry second and Stacey Solomon third.
“The only problem with Danyl is that the public don’t seem to like him and I think Olly is probably the most popular.”

This is a bit of a strange story as the ice-haired Welshman backs Olly to win because he’s the most popular – yet he was in the bottom two last week.  Then, he actually doesn’t think he should win – at best he’s ranking him as fourth out of the last five.  Are we supposed to read between the lines here or something? I feel like there’s a hidden message in this article that I can’t quite work out.

The video for Cheryl Cole’s next single 3 Words featuring will.i.am has been released and once again her look has caused some debate.

Her first single Fight for this Love saw her famously wear a skimpy military outfit and like everything surrounding style icon Cole there was much anticipation for the new video.

She appears in a futuristic gold and leather outfit before shocking with lightning white hair.

It is the second single Cole and will.i.am have duetted on with Heartbreaker going to number four in 2008.

The new single is out on December 21st but is already getting regular airplay and is surely set to follow her previous solo singles to the top of the chart a week after the X Factor winner.

Cheryl Cole looks HOTTER than ever as she leaves her X Factor judging panel behind to adopt a Lady Gaga-inspired look in the video for 3 Words.

In the raunchy video the Girls Aloud singer is seen STRIPPED down to just a black bra and long black gloves – sporting a long blonde wig.

And she sexes it up as she shakes her body around as she moves alongside a troop of half-naked backing dancers.

The 26-year-old then changes into a hot military uniform which barely covers the top of her thighs – check out those legs.

And she lures us in further as she crawls along the floor in a figure-hugging black dress.

It’s number one already in our eyes.

As you know we have our fashion radar on high alert come XFactor on a weekend, and we can spot and name Cheryl’s designer gear at 100 yards. Yes, it is sad (sadder still that we watch XFactor while following other people’s twitter opinions), but the public need to know! But what with her music career taking off, Cheryl has upped her fashion game and has us judging her wardrobe more than ever. First it was the ‘Fight for This Love’ split trousers and uniform debacle – hmm, not one of our favourites we must admit – and now she has gone all lady of the manor/Lady GaGa schizo on us in her new video for ‘Three Words’, a duet with Will.I.Am. We have seen the first pics from it and we’re not really getting the theme to be honest. There are two stills where in one she is wistfully sitting in a throne (ok, it’s just a chair), and in the other she is leaning on a wall, both dressed on long, pretty conservative, gowns. So far, so safe, we thought. Then the GaGa pics arrived today of Cheryl with blonde hair, a bit of netting, and a bra top. Now you know us, we hate to make a quick judgement…well, if you insist…this kinda scared us to be honest, but we will reserve total judgment until after (and during) we’ve seen the video. But at least Cheryl now knows she should never, ever, ever go blonde!

As this year’s edition of the X-Factor begins to hot up, Fingertips’ Showbiz correspondent Simon Wright takes a look at the story so far

Changes have been made, controversy and allegations have dogged the most famous judge on TV and let’s not forget The Louis Walsh Book of Rules & Regulations: Version 1.0.

Yes, this year’s X-Factor has seen it all and with an average of ten million viewers for Saturday night’s live performances, then at least 13 million tuning into Sunday’s results show, it’s a major ratings winner. With the nation glued to ITV’s latest reality extravaganza, it is time to look back at some of the moments that have made this X-Factor the most dramatic yet.

Firstly, there is no doubt about the vocal talents of Simon Cowell’s contestant Danyl Johnson. However, he has often been accused of being too arrogant by the judges and lambasted in the media for his actions. For me, if it was purely a talent show, Danyl would be firm favourite, but now the public get the only say in who leaves the competition, it must be doubted how long he will remain in the show.

Let’s also not forget Rachel Adedej’s constant battle to avoid the dreaded bottom two and Miss Frank – destined not to prove they were the best of the groups this year.

This leads us nicely onto the most topical debate: Jedward. Some people adored the twins, and others loathed them. Although vocally challenged, their entertainment value could not be faulted.

Maybe that is what Simon was thinking when he controversially sent the November 8th show to a deadlock, which eliminated the hugely-talented but under-rated Lucie Jones. Lucie was cruelly treated by Cowell, and didn’t get the credit she deserved; we are bound to hear her name in the future.

Of course, we will continue to hear of Jedward too – but hopefully not on a music basis.

What of the judges then? In the Over 25s, it is clear that Simon has had the strongest category this year. However, despite the talents of Danyl, Jamie ‘Afro’ Archer and Olly Murs, he now stands in real danger of losing the competition.

Louis is now out of the running, while Cheryl has made some inspired song choices for favourite Joe McElderry, yet pulled some very questionable moves that have seen the cute Lloyd Daniels hung out to dry.

This year though, Dannii Minogue deserves a load of credit for the way she has dealt with her girls and the shock of elimination of both Rachel and Lucie. Ignore the media reports about her supposed disagreements with Cheryl – they get along perfectly.

So, three weeks left, five acts remain in the form of Joe, Olly, Danyl, Lloyd and Dagenham Duchess Stacey Solomon. Who is going to win? Only time will tell, but we are definitely in store for a classic and dramatic final furlong of the X-Factor 2009.

Writing under the name @cherylkerl, a joker has been posting messages that poke fun at the X Factor judge – all written in a heavy Geordie accent. It’s the most entertaining effort we’ve seen on the social networking site.

One sample tweet refers to her controversial L’Oreal adverts: “Ah’ve gorra geet big boxa L’Oreal testaz that’ll mebbes sell at the car boot on Sundee, so yerz can come an get a boagan.”

And when Mariah Carey’s “diva” behaviour was all over the news, a tweet read: “Hei, the aall said that Mariah was gannin te be a demandin Divvy but she was aall reet. She’s even comin foa a curry wi uz.”

Followed by: “Bit of an atmosfea at the tandoori. Jedwud’s bladdered an Mariah’s got aall sniffy cos therz na Swan Korma on the menu.”

3 things that have brightened my Friday slightly:

1. This article on books by Michael Wolff. Despite it being a fairly clinical piece about the horrendous state of popular literature today, I’m still cheered by the author’s wonderful conclusion.
2. That Avatar may be “…a horrible piece of shit.”. Don’t ask me why, but whenever an upcoming film is hyped way past the point of normal sanity, I start secretly wishing it will turn out to be the worlds worst film. I also like poking fun at James Cameron. So to hear that a leaked review of Avatar is somewhat less than complimentary has given me a good bout of self-satisfied chuckling.
3. BBC4’s ‘Lennon Naked’. If this one-off drama about John Lennon is half as good as it sounds (unless ‘naked’ is meant literally and he’s filmed nude) I’ll be a happy man. As not only does it cover a really bloody interesting period of his life (67-71), it’s also going to star the fantastic Christopher Eccleston. Will have to wait till 2010 though as they haven’t actually filmed it yet.

3 things that have darkened my Friday slightly:

1. That using the word “porn” as a suffix has become popular. Some recent examples I’ve seen include…Saw (torture-porn!), 2012 (apocalypse/disaster-porn!) and The Twilight Saga (abstinence-porn!). Personally I can’t stand it. Surely even a simple porn-related simile would be preferable to the current trend of calling nearly everything something-porn?
2. Someone so utterly stupid as to sue World of Warcraft for making him miserable. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. They’re also trying to subpoena the guitarist from Depeche Mode too, calling him an expert on melancholy “since he himself has been known to be sad, lonely, and alienated…”. Words almost fail me.
3. Eminem wanting to be a judge on X-Factor. I don’t care that it will never happen or that I’d never watch it anyway, just the idea of rap-idiot Eminem offering his carefully thought-out criticisms to some increasingly nervous contestants gives me the cold shivers.

In a survey of over a thousand quotes from the X Factor finalists, judges and fans of the show, Geordie lad Joe McElderry has emerged as the most relaxed contestant. The poll, undertaken by leading Australian beer brand Foster’s uses a series of language based algorithms to gauge how worried or carefree someone is.

Popular social networking site Twitter formed a crucial part of the survey, helping to determine that with a score of 80%, bookie’s favourite Joe was well and truly the most ‘No Worries’ contestant out of this year’s remaining hopefuls.
