Apt Pupil fue la peli que hizo Bryan Singer en 1998 justo después de Usual Suspects y que le significó su reconfirmación como estrella de Hollywood.

En esta peli un joven quinceañero se entera que su vecino es un ex oficial de la Gestapo y fascinado por las historias que puede contarle sobre la Segunda Guerra Mundial abusa de su sed de chantaje con revelar su secreto a las autoridades locales hasta tal punto que se le devuelve y desencadena una serie de eventos que marcan su vida y su carácter.

Esta peli tiene un terrible registro de producción. Basada en una novela de Stephen King se buscó producirla en cine a principios de los 80’s pero dos actores que se contrataron para realizar el papel de Dussander murieron. Cuando se lanzó la producción en forma en 1987 tenía tanto lastre financiero que el proyecto se canceló. Después de casi quince años los derechos volvieron a King y fue gracias a él que la peli se hizo con Singer quien redujo la historia, la violencia y cambió el final para finalmente tener el producto que podemos apreciar hoy en día.

La obra no deja más que admiración por un monstruo de la literatura norteamericana como lo es Stephen King. Qué impresión la influencia que es este señor en Hollywood (además que es de mis autores favoritos) y el listado tan extenso de pelis basadas en sus obras. De esta, una notable actuación del actor fetiche de Singer, Ian McKellen quien de la mano de su colega Brad Renfro fueron rotundos ganadores ese año en festivales independientes.

Excelente fotografía a cargo de Newton Thomas Siegel un importante engranaje en el equipo de Singer desde siempre, que lo ha acompañado a lo largo de su carrera cinematográfica e incluso televisiva en el capítulo que Singer dirigió de House M.D. ( si es buena esta serie? Debería seguirla? No se cada vez me parece que me estoy perdiendo de algo verdaderamente importante pero nunca lo tengo muy claro).

Finalmente, el dramatismo se complementa con una cara reconocida en este blog: John Ottman. Compositor de Valkyrie, The Invasion, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, X-Men 2, The Cable Guy, Usual Suspects y Public Access (estas últimas pertenecientes a la opera prima de Singer).

Una buena peli, Singer no desentona, por el contrario entretiene con su trama bien lograda. Me la quería ver hacía mucho tiempo y por fin la pasaron en Cinemax.

Apologies to my loyal reader, things have been very sparse on GameSeizure lately. After recently relocating to Plain Grove, Pennsylvania, procuring a reliable internet connection has proved to be a major quest. The problem: Plain Grove is very rural. No, really rural. With a capital R. As in, this was my alarm clock this morning. Luckily, it didn’t wake the neighbors. But I digress.

One of the small silver linings one finds oneself with when recently relocated and stranded offline is an abundance of free time to go through old crap. One piece of crap was a $5.00 scanner from a yard sale. The power adapter didn’t work, but a “quick” search of the big green duffel bag of random cords provided one that did. Score. Combined with a small surviving remnant of my comic book collection this afforded the unique opportunity to waste time in a new and semi-constructive manner.

"If you can't say something nice..."

Now, as someone who owned over 5,000 comics before a structural fire, sorting through the hundred-or-so newly rediscovered survivors was painful. But the pain was shouldered for the sake the greater good. The result? Over a dozen scans of video game advertisements from comics of yore and a kicker for any X-Men fans out there. Check out Mario before side-scrolling, Mortal Kombat’s debut, and the Freedom Stick.

In my defense, that’s the condition X-Men #2 was in when I received it…

This Halloween, you better stick to the rules...

It is in the spirit of Halloween that I bring this film review to you. With only 9 days left to All Hallow’s eve, you are increasingly likely to see some rather strange things appear here, so expect the unexpected.

Basically, the concept of the film is a collection of four terrifying tales which at some point all interlinks with the presence of Sam (Samhain), a mysterious, ever silent and deadly pint-sized trick or treater who evidently would like to give a friendly reminder to those who break the rules on Halloween. I’m going to dive straight in by saying the film is one which any horror fan would love, with a sweet disposition of thrills with an incredibly well structured plot-line and a few varying comedic undertones.

You can’t help but favour the cute yet creepy appearance of young Sam, which is the case even when it seems like he’s about to murder someone and you have to especially admire his use of Halloween themed props. In it’s entirety the film is ‘scary‘ in any sense, however the only thing viewers might be distasteful of is the fact it could be even scarier, but once you start watching, you instantly become pulled in and it’s hard to escape the fun yet uniquely terrifying world of Trick ‘R Treat back to the ever critical view a viewer may have.

Featuring the likes of Anna Paquin (X-men movies, The Piano, 25th Hour), Dylan Baker (Spiderman 2, Happiness, Thirteen Days) and Brian Cox (Zodiac, Troy, X-men 2), the film attempts to revive an old forgotten subgenre of horror, such as with ‘An American Werewolf in London‘ or everyone’s favourite classic ‘Halloween‘ and I have to say it successfully pulls it off, and with style. Director Michael Dougherty had this to say;

“I think we’re in a very lucky period, where there’s such a diverse range of horror subgenres. But this subgenre … kind of went away, and I just kind of want to bring it back.”

Thankfully a good friend of mine was able to attend a special screening at the Long Beach Comic Con and I received permission to watch the movie through stream. Unfortunately, Trick ‘R Treat has been through development hell originally scheduled for a 2007 release, and then 2008, and with concerns as to whether it should be released in theaters or have a straight to DVD release were raised. However, the film is to go straight to DVD following the 4th October in the US, but with no information available as to a UK release. Eventually, the film will be available over here, estimated to be roughly around Christmas. A must see on Halloween or anytime leading up to it for the extra buzz, otherwise still one of the best feel-good horrors I’ve seen in a long time. For those that have not seen the trailer, it will be included. It easily deserves it’s 5 stars.

Created by Paragon Software Corp over 19 years ago, X-Men 2: The Fall of the Mutants is one of those games that I searched for my whole life and never actually found – until now.

With the chance to play as 15 different X-Men, this game has you pursue Freedom Force and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants all while avoiding traps and random foes scattered throughout the levels. There doesn’t seem to be any discernible story apart from searching for the pair of kidnapped X-Men (Storm and Forge) and not dying.

Unlike many pc speaker games, the sound is okay, even though they occasionally cut out. The graphics are mostly good, although Colossus looks like a steel-skinned wrestler – Triple H anyone? .

If you’re a old skool gamer or just want to know what computer games were like before everyone had a personal computer, download X-Men 2 – The Fall of the Mutants.

Now if only I could find X-Men: Madness in Murderworld.

Inicalmente, quero fazer um comunicado extra-oficial, no qual digo a vocês que nosso companheiro de postagens, o Nightrain, após seu ultimo post, pediu afastamento do Blog por tempo indeterminado; Pois, está totalmente focado na sua área academica e em projetos pessoais.

Sendo assim, gostaria de fazer os agradecimentos a ele, por ter dado inicio a este Blog junto comigo, e por sua participação aqui, até então! Bom, mesmo com certas desavenças, sinta-se a vontade pra voltar quando se sentir apto, e com mais tempo pra se dedicar e se importar com o Blog, que já se tornou algo que não é meramente hobby, pois agora temos um compromisso com leitores que esperam por posts assíduos e um pouco mais de dedicação !!!

E quanto a vocês, queridos poucos mais fiéis blogespectadores que insistem em nos aturar, deixo o aviso que esta lacuna não ficara vazia por muito tempo. Tenho novidades pra vocês semana que vem… a chegada de um novo companheiro, nesta nova empreitada do Amor com Humor.

E agora, vamos pro que interessa… que é a analise do filme X-MEN 2:

Bom, do X-men nem vamos entrar em detalhes sobre os personagens e suas caracteristicas… porque todo mundo que conhece X-men dos quadrinhos e dos desenhos, ja sabe! E se vc não sabe… não sei nem porque viu o filme ou quer ver !!! rs

E a historia dessa parte 2 da saga, eh + ou – a seguinte…
Rola uma tentativa de assassinato ao presidente dos EUA, a tentativa foi feita pelo Noturno(que estava sendo controlado pelo Strike). Depois, o Prof. Xavier vai visitar o Magneto e descobre que ele deu informações pro Strike, que é o cara que fez a experiencia com o Wolverine(Colocou o Adamantium nele). Logo depois disso, o Strike invade a mansão do Prof. Xavier, onde moram os alunos(X-men), o Wolverine sinistramente como sempre da porrada em todo mundo e salva os alunos(A maioria).

Enquanto isso, a Jean e a Tempestade vão procurar o Noturno a pedido do Prof. Xavier, pra trazer ele pro “time”(boa contratação! kkkkk). enquanto isso, as crianças fogem da mansão, guiadas pelo Colossus… Enquanto o Wolverine, a Vampira o Homem de Gelo, e o Pyro vão pra Boston encontrar com a Jean e a Tempestade. No meio do caminho, acabam parando na casa do Bob(Homem de Gelo), onde ele revela pros pais que é um mutante e talz, ai o irmãozinho fdp, fika com raivinha e inveja e liga pra policia e talz…. os X-men pregam a paz, só que o Pyro fica enfesadinho e tosta os policiais todos !!! UHuhuhuuu… merecido! rs

Depois disso, todos estão no jato, só que começam a ser perseguidos…. um missel atinge eles, a Vampira cai do avião(Eu rezei nessa hora! Kkkkkkkkkk) e o Noturno salva ela com o teletransporte(Agradeci muito a ele, disse que até que como premio dava a bunda do THunter pra ele! xD). E depois, o Magneto ajuda a pousar o avião.

Depois disso, a Jean le a mente do Noturno, descobre onde é a base do Strike. E eles vão pra lá e invadem. Enquanto isso, Strike usava seu filho Jason, pra criar uma ilusão e fazer o Prof. Xavier usar o CEREBRO, pra localizar e matar os mutantes. Depois de muita luta e porradeiro, o  Magneto chega ao CEREBRO…e ao inves de salvar o Prof. Xavier, faz com que ele passe a localizar os humanos e mata-los ao inves dos mutantes(Inverte a ordem do Strike).

Ai ,depois de mais porradeiro e da fuga do Magneto, dessa vez com o Pyro se juntando a eles, e deixando o Strike acorrentado na neve. O Noturno e a Tempestade, salvam o professor. Ai nisso, os compartimentos de agua da represa se rompem…e começa a inundar tudo, ai com a ajuda do Wolverine eles conseguem sair e voltar pra superficie(com neve).

E aiiiiiii, no final o jato não queria pegar… ai a Jean, sem os outros verem…sai do jato e se sacrifica pra que todos possam sair vivos de lá(Que lindooooo!).
E FIMMMMMMM !!!

PARTES E COISAS ENGRAÇADAS DO FILME:

- A Mistica, transformada em uma loira gostosa, dando mole pro Guardinha Gordinho que trabalhava onde o Magneto tava preso. rs
- O Homem de Gelo, gelando o refrigerante do Wolverine (Depois dele descobrir que não tinha cerveja na mansão! kkkkkk)
- A Mistica(sempre ela) transformada em Jean, entrando na cabana do Wolverine e dando uns pegas nele, até ele descobrir que era ela! (Ai ele brochou! Kkkkk)
- No final do filme, o gurizinho que tava no colo do Wolverine, fazendo careta pro Strike(que tava acorrentado), a graça tá na lingua do guri, que é tipow de um lagarto !!! rs
- E a melhor parte de todas, que seria triste se não fosse engraçada. É no final, depois que a Jean se “sacrifica”… o Wolverine repete mais de mil vezes: “ELA SE FOI…”, e com uma voz bem GAY !!! Eu não resistiiiiiiii… EU RI !!! kkkkkkkkkk

LIÇÕES QUE TIREI DO FILME
- Desconfie mil vezes, se uma loira chegar do nada dando mole pra você e ainda te pagando uma cerveja. (A cena do guardinha)
- Desconfie mais ainda, se a mulher dos seus sonhos, que acabou de te “cortar”, invadir sua barraca do nada e ir te beijando !!!
- Se você tem poder de regeneração e garras de adamantium, você quebra até o Chuck Norris!
- Pessoas podem morrer, só com o pensamento do Prof. Xavier. Portanto, tome cuidado se ele disser que estava pensando em você! xD
- Mulheres sempre vão se sentir em duvida entre um Cafajeste e um Bonzinho, e mesmo se sentindo mais atraída pelo Cafajeste, elas por comodidade…vão escolher o Bonzinho. (O lance entre a Jean, o Wolverine e o Ciclope)
- Ainda existem pessoas com espirito heróico e que se sacrificam pra salvar muitas vidas! (Existir, existe… + acho q só procurando no google pra achar uma dessas!)
- E por ultimo, obvio que não poderia faltar… cheguei a conclusão, de que… A VAMPIRA É LINDA, mesmo tendo uma pequena separaçãozinha nos 2 dentes da frente dela !!! xD

Scottish film star Alan Cumming has trashed a bar in New York after getting drunk on tequila.

In a bizarre accident, the X-Men actor ripped the top off the bar while “stretching” at hipster drinkery The Bowery.

The bizarre incident occurred while Cumming, 44, was drinking tequila at the trendy hang-out.

He explained: “I was hanging on to the edge of the bar with my feet on the bottom and stretching my back out, and the whole top of the bar came away.

“I went for a meeting there the next day with my friend, and I thought, ‘Gosh, did that really happen?’”

But bosses at the nightspot insist that despite the damage, the Scottish screen actor is welcome back any time.

A spokesman said: “Alan was in here partying, but he’s a great customer.”

Originally from Aberfeldy, Perthsire, Cumming has enjoyed a high profile recently, with his latest film, Boogie Woogie, having premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival this weekend.

He was also presented with a knighthood on the Queen’s 2009 Birthday Honours for his services to the arts and his activism on behalf of gay rights.

He has even recently signed to star in a Broadway musical version of Spider-Man.

Como todas las sagas, los X-Men tendrán su seguidores y sus detractores, y más si tenemos en cuenta que la tercera entrega dejó a muchos de sus seguidores bastante cabreados (yo incluida), ya que lo que había hecho magistralmente Singer con sus dos primeras películas, Ratner lo destrozó en hora y media de metraje.

X-MEN

X-Men, una nueva adaptación de los cómics de la Marvel, vió la luz en el 2000, precedida del éxito de taquilla que fue Blade (lo de los superhéroes en el cine comenzaba a destacar). El encargado de llevar a la pantalla grande a La Patrulla X fue Bryan Singer, que ya había cosechado grandes críticas y mucho dinero con Sospechosos habituales.

Algunos de nosotros nos preparamos para ver un bodrio de película. Demasiados superhéroes por metro cuadrado en una misma película. ¡Y como nos equivocamos! Singer no sólo nos mostró a los superhéroes en plenas facultades que se enfundan en sus trajes negros (lo del amarillo hubiese sido demasiado cómico para el comienzo de esta saga) y que luchan por la igualdad entre mutantes y humanos, aunque también nos muestra sus anhelos, sus debilidades, como seres humanos que son.

En X-Men vemos parte de la gran patrulla que forma Charles Xavier, un mutante de gran poder que utiliza sus “habilidades” para hacer el bien, o lo que es mejor, no dejar que otros hagan el mal. Para ello funda una escuela para gente “superdotada” (y tanto, diria yo!!!), donde nos encontramos que todos sus habitantes son mutantes, desde profesores, como Ororo Munroe (Tormenta) o Scott Summers (Cíclope), hasta alumnos.

La película comienza con un beso, un mal beso, en el que la chica deja inconsciente al pobre chaval. Ella muy asustada, se va de su casa ya que sabe todo el daño que puede hacer. En su huida, en un bar, encuentra a Logan, un hombre que busca respuestas (que se nos dan en este 2009 con X-Men Origins: Wolverine), y que es como ella, diferente, mutante. Mientras huyen, serán atacados por alguien como ellos, y al final de toda la pelea entre mutantes, acabaran en el colegio de Xavier. Un gran empiece, no nos engañemos, pero ni por asomo es lo mejor de la película, ya que es la película en si todo lo mejor.

Singer sabe dar a todos los mutantes que aparecen su trocito de pastel en la película, todos y cada uno son interesantes. Todos y cada uno forman parte de un todo, porque ésto no es una película sobre un único superheroe y su mortal enemigo. Esto es una película con muchísima carga de fondo (no en vano, los cómics en que se basan también lo son).

Sin que la película este plagada de fx a cada fotograma de la misma, nos ofrece un gran entretenimiento de principio a fin. Nos muestra que los mutantes no son tan diferentes, que pueden estar unidos, que si necesitan ayuda, siempre habrá alguien que se la proporcione y que sus deseos y sus temores son los mismos que para cualquier ser humano. Nos muestra, que lo que busca Magneto en el fondo, es no ser diferente, pero convirtiendo al resto de la humanidad en seres como él.

X-MEN 2

Y si Singer con la primera nos hizo albergar alguna que otra duda con respecto al auge de los superhéroes en el mundo del cine, volvió 3 años más tarde para sorprendernos con una nueva entrega de “La Patrulla X” que en mi opinión, superó y con mucho, a la primera parte.

Más mutantes se unieron a los X-Men, pero también más malos, y esta vez, a diferencia de la primera, el villano no es de la misma especie, sino que es un humano que teme a esos seres tan poderosos que la propia naturaleza ha modificado por el ¿bien de la raza humana?

William Striker (que hemos visto con muchos años menos en la X-Men Origins) pretende controlar a todos esos seres diferentes. No sólo que estén censados  y cuyos poderes estén definidos, sino que además deben estar recluidos para no hacer daño a nadie, aunque esos poderes que tienen sean inofensivos. Por lo tanto, en la lucha contra Striker, todos los mutantes tendrán que unirse. Si ya lo dice el dicho, el enemigo de mi enemigo ¿es mi amigo?

Una vez salvada la amenza de Striker, y como no podía ser de otra manera, Magneto volverá a su posición, a su puesto en contra de la humanidad. Y en ese cambio convencerá a uno de los chicos de Xavier a seguirlo. Grandiosa la forma en que convence a Pyros para que se una a su causa y sea uno de sus lugartenientes para la próxima entrega.

Además de todo esto, mayor importancia cobran los jóvenes del colegio del Profesor Xavier, aunque también mayor es la importancia que se da a la relación amorosa que se establece entre algunos de estos superhéroes.

Efectos especiales si cabe mejor logrados y en mas abundacia, un ritmo que no decae durante las dos horas que dura el film. Se repite casi el mismo esquema que en la primera, todos y cada uno de los personajes están ahí por alguna razón, buena o mala, pero todos tienen su importancia (cosa que no ocurre desgraciadamente con la tercera parte).

Lo mejor para mí el diálogo entre Mística y el Rondador Nocturno en el que él le pregunta que pudiendo ser quien quiera, porqué lleva su aspecto mutante. Porque la gusta, porque es así. Toda una declaración de intenciones si como en la primera volvemos a fijarnos en el trasfondo de la película. Todo el mundo debería de estar orgulloso de ser como es. Simple y llanamente.

X-MEN 3

Y llegó 2006 y una nueva entrega donde Brett Ratner la jodió a base de bien. Y sí, hay mucha gente que piensa que es buena o que es bastante fiel a los cómics (no he seguido mucho los cómics de estos superhéroes), pero hay cosas que no tienen razón de ser.

Ratner intentó copiar la fórmula de Singer, pero su intento fue un fracaso absoluto. Si en la primera salían un número elevado de mutantes, y en la segunda aumentaban y fue muchísimo mejor, porque no añadir muchos ¡muchos! más a la tercera. La fórmula había funcionado anteriormente, porque no iba a repetirse con la tercera. Así que el Sr. Ratner comenzó a meter a mutantes a diestro y siniestro, aunque solo estuvieran ahí para dar la cara, o para todos esos seguidores de los cómics que exigían que alguno de sus ídolos salieran por fin en la franquicia de los X-Men.

Pero es que si mete mutantes buenos, pues también tiene que meter mutantes malos, y cuantos mas mejor. De ahí que en la batalla final solo veamos cuerpos en movimiento peleando a saber con que poderes cada uno (exceptuando claro a los verdaderos protagonistas del film).

Si a eso le unimos, que Ratner se decantó por la saga del Fenix Oscuro, que por exigencias del guión se carga a Cíclope (un icono de los X-Men) a la primera de cambio (porque el Sr. Marsden se va con Singer a hacer Superman Returns), y que la supuesta cura de la que se habla es una utopía como nos muestra en ese final después de todos los títulos, apaga y vámonos. Pero si a eso, le añadimos el triángulo amoroso entre Pícara – El hombre de hielo – Kitty Pride y el amor incondicional que siente Lobezno hacia Jean Grey que es capaz de morir por ella, es para cabrearse por haber pagado la entrada del cine. Admito que el tira y afloja que estos 2 se traian en las películas anteriores daban vidilla a las pelis, pero que llegue ella de repente y mate al novio de toda su vida y le pida a Lobezno que si la quiere la libre de ello, cuando ha sido rechazado varias veces en la pelis anteriores….. es que no me lo creo (y no me refiero a no creermelo en sentido literal, sino que hace que la peli en sí, dentro de lo que es una película de superhéroes, no tenga ni pies ni cabeza).

Pero asumiendo que esto fuera solo un prejuicio mio, que no influyera en el “ser” de la película, lo que tampoco me creo es que después de la que arman todos los mutantes en la tan ansiada Batalla Final, después de que haya muerto gente inocente, soldados, infinidad de mutantes, se haya desintegrado Alcatraz y hayan cambiado un puente de lugar con el simple poder de la mente de Magneto, al día siguiente, mutantes y humanos sigan siendo tan amigos como siempre, y se cree esa supuesta paz entre unos y otros, y que Magneto, aún sin poderes, siendo la cabeza pensante de todo el desguisado que se arma, siga tan campante (o no tan campante) jugando al ajedrez en un parque, en lugar de estar recluido.

Algo que no se puede negar a Ratner es su puesta en escena, por la que lía en las luchas y batallas, pero yo, que soy amante de las películas de acción, de los fx, de las explosiones, de las peleas y las luchas, lo que hecho de menos en esta película es un guión que lo que menos lo define es acertado. Hecho de menos que los mutantes que aparecen, a diferencia con las anteriores, tengan un propósito en la película que es el de cubrir una vacante para morir (o para el plan que sea) o para contentar a los millones de fans de esta saga. Echo de menos que a los mutantes no se les muestre como personas (a pesar de sus poderes) con sus dudas, con sus debilidades, con su esencia, ya que en esta todos los integrantes se limitan a cumplir su papel sin mas.

En fin……..esta última entrega todo un despropósito que se cargó el buen hacer de Singer de las dos anteriores.

Para acabar ya (la de X-Men Origins no la voy a meter aqui, aunque os remito a la reseña de Snake pinchando aqui, porque aunque tenga al mismo protagonista en realidad no se trata de La Patrulla X, sino de uno de sus integrantes) os comentaré algunas curiosidades:

- Brian Singer pensó para el papel de Logan/Lobezno en actores de la talla de Mel Gibson o Russel Crowe, aunque fue finalmente casi un desconocido Hugh Jackman el que se llevó el gato al agua.

- Natalie Portman rechazó en su momento el papel de Pícara.

- El discurso que lanza el senador de USA Robert Kelly en X-Men 1, para obtener una lista con el nombre y los poderes de los mutantes está inspirado en el que dió el senador Joseph McCarthy durante la famosa caza de brujas, para obtener una lista con el nombre de los comunistas que trabajaban para el Departamento de Estado.

- En X-Men 2, el gato que acaba lamiéndole a Logan las garras en la casa del Hombre de Hielo, llevaba varios días sin comer para que pudiera hacer esa escena (que gente más malvada, desde luego ya les vale).

- En X-Men 3 se hicieron muchas pruebas para la conversión de Jean Grey a Fénix Oscuro, pero finalmente se quedaron con la que aparece en la película (la más barata según mi opinión, demasiado dinero gastado la aparación de otros mutantes!!!!!).

X-Men star Cumming, 44, who has recently become a naturalised US citizen, is said to be “delighted” at the reception he received from the audience.

Performing as part of the American Songbook series of concerts, Cumming kept things just a touch camp and off-colour with stories of Graham Norton stuck in Dollywood during 9/11, a paparazzi photo with pop singer Mika and riding on the back of a motorcycle through the city while high.

Originally from Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Cumming opened his show with his version of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Shine’, before yelling: “Time for some ABBA!”

The flamboyant star then proceeded to belt out a rousing cover of the Swedish pop giant’s ‘Where I Want to Be’, which featured in the hit musical Chess.

During the show he also sang songs made famous by Frank Sinatra, Cole Porter and Charles Aznavour, as well as a selection of theatre numbers from various musicals including Cabaret, Chess and Falsettoland.

One of the most touching moments of his hour-long set was when he admitted to sharing an ex-boyfriend with his music director, Lance Horne.

He then performed a song by Horne about the man in question, “Don’t Tell Me,” and seemed comfortable baring his personal life so boldly.

The gay icon trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and Cumming was most recently on stage in New York playing the debauched divine rock god Dionysus in The National Theater of Scotland’s production The Bacchae.

 The Goldeneye actor has led a colourful life having been married to a woman in the mid-80s.

Last year he married graphic artist Grant Shaffer in a civil ceremony in Greenwich, London, and the couple now live in New York with their beloved dogs.

The Hollywood idol shot to fame in the sitcom The High Life and has since starred in a number of top movies including Goldeneye and X-Men 2.

The extravagant actor also has his own beauty range, the initial product being a cologne called ‘Cumming: the Fragrance’.

There is also a series of other cosmetic merchandise, many with suggestive names such as ‘Cumming All Over’ body wash.

Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise)

Audiences rarely see American films about the German perspective of World War II and Nazism. There is Lewis Milestone’s 1930 antiwar classic All Quiet on the Western Front but it is set during World War I. Sam Peckinpah’s brutal Cross of Iron (1977) shovels scorn upon the treatment of German soldiers by their careerist seniors and psychotic Nazi commanders, but it is a criminally underappreciated film that few people have seen. Valkyrie is hence an intriguing film for Hollywood to make because it is told from a German perspective and, like Cross of Iron, it sharply distinguishes the differences between members of the Nazi regime and the regular German army.

Valkyrie is based on the assassination attempt that was made on Adolf Hitler’s life in 1944. The plot to kill Hitler was highly organised and involved prominent German military officers and politicians. Claus von Stauffenberg, a severally wounded Colonel, who in Valkyrie is portrayed as being completely opposed to Hitler on both nationalistic and moral grounds, led the operation. He realises that in order to become a true German patriot, he must become a traitor. In a possible dig at the recent Iraq War, Strauffenberg is depicted as being wise enough to realise that it is not enough to remove the man at the top of the chain of command, there must be a plan for what happens next. Hence the collaborators create an ingenious plan to turn the German reserve army and SS against each other, using emergency powers labelled Operation Valkyrie.

Valkyrie is a slow burning thriller with an emphasis on the plotting and planning rather than action. Even though we know that the plot did not succeed, Valkyrie does give us a tantalising feeling that Stauffenberg just might succeed in saving Europe from Hitler. The build up of tension on 20 June 1944, the day the assassination attempt takes place, is almost unbearable. Director Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects) gives Valkyrie the same cool, crisp and almost washed out look that he used in the X-Men films and Superman Returns, heightening the constant threat of exposure.

Tom Cruise plays Strauffenberg with the type of determined conviction that you could imagine that such a man would have had. The biggest flaw in Valkyrie however is the depiction of Strauffenberg as a man who is far too perfect. By portraying Strauffenberg as so incredibly clean cut in his devotion to his family, his love for his country and his hatred of Nazism, he becomes a two dimensional character that is difficult to believe. What motivated the actual Strauffenberg is far more complex than clear-cut moral convictions and Valkyrie does suffer for excluding the more complicated details about him.

There are other minor issues about Valkyrie that may frustrate. It assumes knowledge of the Holocaust, barely mentioning the Nazi atrocities let alone depicting them. Unlike the upcoming film The Reader (Stephen Daldry), which does not make any fuss over the fact that the actors play Germans but speak in English, Valkyrie draws too much attention to it. Accents are mixed and the film begins with the rather contrived technique of having Cruise narrate in subtitled German, which then fades into English. Nevertheless, Valkyrie is a decent historical thriller, which remains reasonably respectful to its source material.

“No Release Date Available”. Odeio ler estas quatro palavras.

Para quem não sabe, sou crítico, historiador, colecionador (2000 and counting!) e, principalmente, fã e entusiasta do cinema de horror. Não me refiro a filmes recentes feitos por grandes estúdios como Dimension, Universal e Lionsgate. Estou falando da história do gênero: do expressionismo alemão aos bons filmes de horror contemporâneos – eles existem – passando por díversos sub-gêneros do horror: giallo, slashers, splatters, zombies, exploitation e seus sub-gêneros, K-Horror, J-Horror, monster movies e por aí vai (você ainda está lendo?).

Os anos 2000, notórios pelos remakes norte-americanos de produções estrangeiras, também destacam-se pelas pequenas pérolas que surgem no gênero. Geralmente são filmes de baixo orçamento, que através de um bom roteiro, fotografia, atuações e direção, buscam chamar atenção de grandes distribuidoras em pequenos festivais de horror que acontecem por todo o mundo.

NÃO é o caso de “Trick ‘r Treat”, produção de horror escrita e dirigida por Michael Dougherty – novato na direção, mas roteirista de “Superman Returns” e “X-Men 2″. Antes mesmo do filme ser exibido e sagrar-se vencedor do prêmio Audience Award do Screamfest Horror Film Festival 2008, realizado todos os anos em Los Angeles, tendo sua programação considerada uma das mais respeitadas de todos os festivais de cinema marginal pelo mundo, a Warner Bros. Pictures já havia comprado os direitos de exibição, divulgação e distribuição do longa de Dougherty.

Quando a Warner comprou os direitos de exibição? Em 2006! Entre no IMDB e você notará que ao lado do filme, o ano de produção consta como 2008. Porém, o filme está pronto desde 2006 e desde então, já teve datas de theatrical release confirmadas e canceladas quase meia dúzia de vezes. O último cancelamento foi no dia 11 de novembro do último ano e deste então, não há mais previsão de lançamento. Apesar deste movimento estranho da WB – que alguns julgam ser testes e mais testes de audiência – o filme vai se tornando famoso, sendo exibido em diversos festivais pelo mundo e living up to the hype, apesar de ainda ser inédito nos festivais brasileiros. Graças a um amigo americano, editor de um site de horror, tive acesso a esta pequena, mas graciosa obra. E depois de assisti-la, ficar indiferente sem compartilhar uma opinião, seria uma ofensa.

A cada dez filmes de horror realizados hoje em dia, nenhum se salva. Talvez, a cada 20 filmes de horror, um possa ter seu valor. O gênero é cada vez mais marginalizado em alguns países como o Brasil, mas nos EUA e na Europa, onde ainda tem muita força, coisas boas aparecem. Recentemente tivemos o espanhol “[REC]“ como exemplo, os franceses “Ils”, “Frontière(s)”, “À l’intérieur”, “Martyrs” e os norte-americanos “All the Boys Love Mandy Lane”, “Automaton Transfusion”, “Repo! The Genetic Opera” e o sueco “Let the Right One In”, todos obras-primas e este último considerado por mim como o melhor filme de 2008 – um filme MUITO delicado sobre um garoto que se apaixona por uma menina vampira e vencedor de 18 prêmios – até aqui – pelo mundo.

Sobre “Trick ‘r Treat”. Nos anos 1970, houve uma forte onda de filmes violentos, puxados principalmente por “O Massacre da Serra Elétrica”. Os anos 1980 foram diferentes: houve uma amenização do gênero. Os filmes violentos estavam lá – como a então recém estreada franquia “Sexta Feira 13″ -, mas os filmes que alcançaram maior notoriedade foram os chamados “monster movies”, que apesar do nome, não eram filmes violentos, mas muitas vezes filmes quase familiares sobre casas assustadoras, vizinhos estranhos e cidades macabras.

“Trick ‘r Treat” resgata um pouco deste feeling: apesar de ser um filme assustador e sufocante, sabe amenizar e contrapor cenas de susto com belas e longas sequências em torno da fictícia cidadezinha sem nome. O filme, estrelado por Anna Paquin, se passa na noite do dia 31 de outubro (Halloween) e conta a história de quatro grupos de pessoas, onde cada um deles vive uma situação apavorante, que posteriormente, se unem magistralmente no roteiro de Dougherty.

Aliás, o diretor parece ter criado um mundo próprio para si. Um mundo muito semelhante ao universo criado por Tim Burton em “O Estranho Mundo de Jack”. Eu, que vou cada vez menos ao cinema e assisto cada vez mais filmes em casa, lamento não ter tido a oportunidade de ver este filme em uma tela grande. Em geral, “Trick ‘r Treat” é divertidíssimo. Ao mesmo tempo em que assusta e cria um clima de tensão, é uma celebração ao espírito do Halloween, com dosagens de violência e alívio cômico na medida certa, medida exata para consagrá-lo como não apenas um dos grandes filmes de horror atuais, mas da década.

Assista ao trailer acima, liberte-se de alguns pudores e saiba reconhecer um bom filme, independente de seu gênero. Depois, coloque o nome dele na sua listinha de filmes à conferir. Quem sabe 2009 não é o ano em que “Trick ‘r Treat” verá luz do dia.

“Trick ‘r Treat” foi por muito tempo, o filme mais esperado do ano para mim. Não é mais. Já dando a dica, meu próximo alvo é o filme “Paranormal Activity”, que ganhou o prêmio Honorable Mention no Screamfest Horror Film Festival 2007. Clique aqui e veja o trailer perturbador. So – I’ve been a bit neglectful of my blogging duties, but all in the name of good fun..and making ridiculous fan vids.

Another reason is that I’ve sworn off graphic novels and tpb’s until something more interesting crossed my path. I was getting tired of scouring the library shelves for some semblance of a reasonable title, and coming up with books that weren’t really holding my attention. And just to reassure you all – I managed to find a few decent titles.

I’ve also wanted to get back to my regular old novel roots, and devour a few books I’ve had on my list for awhile. My latest conquest was Middlesex by author Jeffrey Eugenides. It was refreshing adult and literary content. And now I’m ready to return to the wonderful world of comic books.

Even though I’ve been “gone” for two weeks, since my world seems to revolve around comic books, and movies, and comic books – I stumbled across a few comic related tidbits I felt compelled to share.

My latest fan-vid (oh, the nerdosity temperature just rose a few degrees in here) is all about a tpb I picked up during my 25th birthday – Fray written by Joss Whedon with art by Karl Moline and Andy Owens. It follows the story of Melaka Fray – a slayer living in a future that is reminiscent of Firefly – with some similar phrasing – “rutting” being the best example.

However – Fray has no knowledge of how to be a slayer and instead leads the life of a hardened thief – running from a tragic past.

The art by Karl Moline is fantastic, and the coloring by Andy Owens is rich and bright – everything you would expect and want from a future with flying cars. Is there a future without flying cars? Where the hell are OUR flying cars!?

But I digress…I also stumbled across Tank Girl through ON Demand last week. Can I just take a moment to say that I love DVR? Having the power to record the shows that I love and watch them whenever I want, fast-forwarding through shit commercials…phew…it’s a TV revolution.

Right – back to Tank Girl. I dug the screwball antics of the main character and the randomness of the plot, but at the same time…it reminded me of all that had been so off-putting about comic book movies made in the last decade.

And what it is that has made comic book movies so distasteful in the past? The cheese factor. Since I’ve not read Tank Girl, I’m not sure how true the movie was to the comic, but the campiness was firing on all cylinders, and made it incredibly difficult to forget you were watching a movie based on a cheeseball comic book. Which was probably the intention. But it didn’t work all the time.

It felt like a 1.5 hour commercial for the series. And though I find myself intrigued, and considering taking a gander at the book…I’m not certain TankGirl will ever make any Top 10 comic movie lists I put together. And on that note – here’s a Top 10 List:

Superman Returns is Number #11 on that list, but mostly because it’s a love letter from Singer to Superman, not for it’s abilities as comic book movie adaptation. Sin City is noteworthy and list-worthy because it revoluntionized the look of comic movies and succeeded in staying admirably accurate to the talents and story-telling of Frank Miller. Which isn’t to say that I much like Sin City.

Persepolis ranks in at 12 – there was too much of an arthouse element for it to be considered comic movie, in my estimation.

And, getting back to Tank Girl: In defense of the artistic craft that went into Tank Girl – Lori Petty had intense and hilarious screen presence. What the hell ever happened to her, btw? Oh, looks like she’s doing mostly voice work now. It’s a shame, she’s gorgeous. Here’s hoping someone gets it together and resurrects her presence in Hollywood. She could definitely pull of another super heroine.

Also worth noting: Naomi Watts (wtf, right?) and Ice-T star in this flick. I’m aware that it has a cult status among many, but it’s a shame that’s all this film with ever retain. I think there was great potential here, squandered by camp. And again – that could be in the vein of the book. So yes – it was fun and funny, but not much more than that.

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of emptying out the contents of my box at the local comic store (Excalibur represent). Not only did I get some very nice compliments (and one of the dudes took a cell pic) about my tattoo, but I dropped about $60.

Kudos to you if you can pick out specific books and titles from this collection. Yep, I’m going to be spending at least the next week “getting back to basics” and shuffling through the stack of issues that has developed while I’ve been fan-vidding and reading regular, smelly old novels.

This will be a bit of a departure from my previous methods of reviewing primarily trade paperbacks or graphic novels…but I think it’ll be fun to break down the series I’m reading…and why a few of them may soon be culled from my box.

As a side note: I’ve mostly been avoiding the Marvel Universe because of Secret Invasion. This has also limited my reading of Wizard down to the letters column and the comic-con notices in the back. Those spoiling bastards! I’m waiting until the Invasion hype is over, and then I’ll get it from the library, without having to shell out big bucks to stay in the loop.

Anger Management.

Wenn Superhelden ihren Job an den Nagel hängen und zur normalsterblichen Tagesordnung hinüberwechseln, geht es meistens ganz schnell mit ihnen bergab. Peter Parker hat aus dieser Lektion gelernt (in „Spiderman 2“), Clark Kent ein bürgerliches Leben mit Lois Lane nach kurzer Zeit wieder ad acta gelegt (in „Superman 2“), und als die Justice League of America bei Gelegenheit von sechsdimensionalen Aliens gewaltsam auf ihre bürgerliche Identität reduziert wurde (in der „JLA“-Serie), war es erst einmal vorbei mit dem Heldentum. Nur der Hulk scheint als unterforderter Sicherheitsbeamter ganz gut klar zu kommen, denn diesen Posten hat er nun mittlerweile seit 2003 inne (zu bestaunen in Ang Lees erster Filmversion). Lukrativ ist die Sache vielleicht nicht, denn bereits für den Gegenwert einer Pizza lässt er seine Dienstpflichten bereitwillig außen vor. Im Großen und Ganzen aber überwiegen die Vorteile, und eine ruhige Kugel zu schieben schützt bekanntlich vor allzu hohem Puls, und das ist gut, denn der macht grün vor Wut. Lou Ferrigno kann es also gelassen angehen und seinem mittlerweile zweiten Nachfolger entspannt bei der Arbeit zusehen. Der ehemalige Bodybuilder hatte einst die erste Realversion des naturgemäß unbeherrschten Mutanten verkörpert und regelmäßig von einem Schnitt zum anderen die Rollen mit seinem weniger angsteinflößenden Alter Ego getauscht (also Hulk gegen Bruce Banner und Ferrigno gegen Bill Bixby). So einfach war das damals. Heute wäre der testosteronlastige Italo-Amerikaner als Darsteller arbeitslos oder maximal noch für Synchronarbeiten gefragt, denn der grüne Hüne mit der chronisch schlechten Laune hat seinen menschlichen Anteil längst auf ein Minimum an Motion Capture reduziert und ist ansonsten ein durch und durch digitales Riesenbaby. Das kann man je nach Belieben als Fluch oder Segen erachten, für die Logik der Transformation jedenfalls ist der technologische Fortschritt ein seltener Fall von Kongenialität.

Dabei leidet auch der aktuelle Hulk noch an den üblichen CGI-Krankheiten, die den Trick als Trick entlarven und sich nur bedingt in den realen Rest des Films einfügen. Das lässt sich zwar nicht verleugnen, überbewerten muss man es aber auch nicht. Immerhin steht dahinter dieselbe Industrie, die über Jahrzehnte hinweg mit minderwertigen Rückprojektionen und anderen heute absurd anmutenden Kompromisslösungen ganz gut gefahren ist. Warum also übermäßige Strenge auffahren, wenn es um digitale Monster geht? – Die 2008er Variante der mittlerweile seit über vier Jahrzehnten bestehenden Comic-Serie jedenfalls lässt sich jede Menge Zeit, bis der Zuschauer überhaupt einmal einen Blick auf das Ergebnis kostenintensiver Programmierarbeit werfen kann (eine dramaturgische Mühe allerdings, die schlichtweg vor die Hunde geht angesichts einer zeigefreudigen Werbekampagne, die kein Geheimnis aus dem Hulk selber und seinem Gegenspieler macht). Bis dahin setzt Marvel in seiner zweiten Eigenproduktion nach dem überaus erfolgreichen „Iron Man“ auf eine ausgedehnte Exposition, die den unbedarften Zuschauer nicht unbedingt eine Mutanten- oder Superheldengeschichte erwarten lassen würde. Allerdings gibt es den unbedarften Zuschauer höchstens noch in Sneak Previews oder hinter dem Mond, und so kann sich der Film eine ziemlich effektive Teaser-Montage erlauben, die in aller Kürze diejenigen Ereignisse zusammenfasst, aufgrund welcher Bruce Banner – seines Zeichens Atomphysiker mit Hang zum Selbstversuch – auf der Flucht vor der US-Army in einer brasilianischen Limonadenfabrik untergetaucht ist und sich dort angestrengt bemüht, seinen Puls möglichst niedrig zu halten, denn sonst, tja, wird aus dem eher schmächtigen Edward Norton ein ziemlich ungemütliches digitales Monster.

Natürlich lässt sich das nur eine Weile vermeiden, und als Banner schließlich von einem Sondereinsatzkommando unter der Leitung des fanatischen Emil Blonsky, eines britischen Söldners mit russischen Wurzeln (sozusagen seine politisch neutralisierte Fassung, da im Comic ursprünglich ein KGB-Agent aus Zagreb), aufgespürt und gejagt wird, bahnt sich der cholerische Golem mit der ungesunden Hautfarbe auch schon bald seinen Weg. Weitaus beängstigender aber als die ungebremste Aggression von Banners kontrollloser Zweitidentität ist Blonskys abgründige Begeisterung für das Potential der grünen Kampfmaschine. Dass die Army weniger an Banner interessiert ist als an der Möglichkeit, die (bislang ungeklärten) Umstände seiner Verwandlung zu reproduzieren und so einen neuen, aggressiven und unbesiegbaren Soldatentypus zu schaffen (Geschosse ignoriert der Hulk nämlich wie Mückenstiche), weckt in der Vorstellung des Söldners echte Allmachtsfantasien. Das muss er nicht aussprechen, denn es blitzt in seinen Augen auf wie das Grün in denjenigen Banners, bevor er sich verwandelt. Dass Blonsky dabei, einer klugen Entscheidung des Regisseurs gemäß, die er gegen den Willen des Studios durchsetzte, von Tim Roth verkörpert wird, kommt der Sache sehr entgegen. Hatte dieser doch in Tim Burtons unseligem „Planet of the Apes“-Remake selbst hinter der Affenmaske seines General Thade noch soviel beunruhigenden Wahnsinn verbreitet, dass man für einen Moment fast vergessen konnte, sich über den Rest des Films zu ärgern. Louis Leterrier wird das vermutlich ähnlich empfunden haben, und so mag es sich ergeben haben, dass Blonsky in seiner menschlichen Gestalt nun mindestens so verstörend gefährlich auftritt wie später als gammastrahlenmutiertes Supermonster (im Comic noch „The Abomination“, im Film leider namenlos), das immerhin noch bedrohlicher aussieht als das seltsame Amphibienwesen, das Manhattan ein paar Monate zuvor heimgesucht hatte (dokumentiert in „Cloverfield“).

Überhaupt ist der Übergang von den realen Charakteren (Banner und Blonsky) zu ihren digitalen Versionen (Hulk und Abomination) weniger fließend als eher sprunghaft. Tauschte die TV-Serie aus den 70ern noch einfach ihre Darsteller aus, so verschwinden die Schauspieler heute ganz und liefern höchstens noch ein paar per Cyber-Scanning generierte Spuren. In den meisten Fällen ist das bloße Effekthascherei (und – bewiesen im Fall von Robert Zemeckis´ „Beowulf“ – für die Dauer eines ganzen Films noch nicht tragbar). Im Fall einer Geschichte allerdings, die auf der vollständigen Transformation ihrer Figuren beruht, hat dieser Schritt eine durchaus bemerkenswerte Konsequenz. Filmimmanent ließe sich das durchaus thematisieren, jedoch ist „The incredible Hulk“ dafür ganz sicher die falsche Adresse. Insgesamt tut Marvel nämlich gut daran, die Dinge nicht übermäßig zu komplizieren, und damit greift das Studio auf eine Tugend zurück, die eine erfolgreiche Comicserie ausmacht. Komplexität braucht eben Zeit und damit Sequels.

Im Gegensatz zu den psychologischen Untiefen etwa, in denen sich Ang Lees „Hulk“-Version bewegte, und die so manchen Fan ratlos zurück ließen, gibt sich die Fassung aus der Feder von Zak Penn (superheldenerfahren seit „X2“) und Edward Harrison geradliniger und leichter konsumierbar. Beide Filme gegeneinander auszuspielen, hat dabei wenig Sinn, denn die Zielvorgabe ist nicht dieselbe. Marvel setzt wie schon bei „Iron Man“ (und allen noch geplanten Superhelden-Filmen des Studios) auf den Franchise-Effekt und kommt damit dem Gesetz des Comics als Serienprodukt näher. Wie alle Superhelden nämlich hat auch der Hulk über die Jahrzehnte seines Bestehens eine komplexe und psychologisch vielfältige Geschichte assimiliert, die in einem einzigen Film keinen Platz hat, und so kann sich Marvel alle Verzweigungen für später aufheben (immerhin gibt es da die überaus schwierige Seite in Banners Entwicklung, die das hohe Aggressionspotential des Hulk mit einem Missbrauch aus der Kindheit in Verbindung bringt). Lees Version hat im Grunde versucht, seiner Figur vieles von dieser Tiefe zu geben, den Film damit aber für klassisches Blockbuster-Kino merklich überladen (Ähnliches ließe sich zwar auch von Burtons „Batman“ behaupten, nur gelingt dort der Spagat merklich besser, und die überbordende Fabulierlust in Charakterzeichnung, Set-Design und Inszenierung kann die eigentlich über alle Maßen enggeführte Psychologie der Geschichte – in der gegenseitigen Co-Abhängigkeit von Bruce Wayne und dem Joker – gut überspielen).

Wie viel Komplexität Leterriers Version aber bereits tatsächlich hat, mag erst ein späterer Director’s Cut offenbaren. Immerhin kündigt der Regisseur bereits eine um ganze 70 (in Worten: siebzig) Minuten längere Fassung an.
