Η ATI αυτό τον καιρό ήταν πολύ απασχολημένη “ρίχνοντας” στην αγορά την μια κάρτα μετά την άλλη. Αρχικά με την High End HD 5870 και HD 5850, αργότερα με τις Mid Range HD 5770 και HD 5750, και τώρα με την θηριώδη Radeon HD 5970! Πριν λίγες μέρες έκαναν την εμφάνιση τους στο διαδίκτυο μερικές φωτογραφίες από ένα Engineering Sample της Hemlock. Η εταιρία υποστηρίζει ότι οι φωτογραφίες δεν απεικονίζουν το τελικό προϊόν καθώς είναι απλά ένα engineering sample.[next]

Ο Jensen Huang, CEO της nVidia, δεν φαίνεται αρκετά ικανοποιημένος με τη συγκεκριμένη καθυστέρηση, μιας και έτσι η εταιρεία θα χάσει την αγορά των Χριστουγέννων, αφήνοντας την ATi να παίζει μόνη της στην αγορά προσφέροντας το DirectX 11 για τους νέους τίτλους (που ελπίζουμε να έχουν κυκλοφορήσει μέχρι τότε). Building a Linux server is a fairly simple affair. If you’re anything like me, you had some old hardware lying around which you shoved into a cheap case, stuck a copy of Debian/Ubuntu/Fedora/Whatever on it, and bob’s your uncle.

But once it’s up and running, should you dedicate a monitor/keyboard/mouse to a computer you barely use? Or is there another option?

Thankfully, one thing Linux has in spades is Options.

Today I’m going to deal with X11 forwarding over SSH. As you may know, SSH is one of the primary ways of connecting in to your Linux server, but it’s normally used for terminal commands – something some people aren’t all that comfortable with.

X11 forwarding over SSH allows the display of any programs you’d normally run from within a Gnome or KDE session to be displayed remotely, with only a few steps to make it possible.

Requirements.

First up, you’ll need an SSH client for your current machine. If you’re using Windows, the best option in my opinion is PuTTY, as it’s free and easy to use. On Mac, your SSH client comes built in, and is called ssh.

Next, we’ll need an X server. Windows-wise, there are a couple of options such as XWin32 (commercial software) and XMing (freeware). As I’m a cheapskate, I’m going with XMing. Again, Mac users have this preloaded providing you installed X11 when you installed OSX.

Windows Howto.

So, first step. Install PuTTY and fire it up. You should see a window like this:

The Host Name or IP Address field is the important one here. Enter the name or IP address of your Linux computer. Leave the port at 22 (unless you’ve changed the default SSH port), then click on SSH in the tree on the left hand side.

Turn on compression to speed up your connection, and bring Blowfish to the top of the list. Blowfish is still relatively secure, but will be a heck of a lot quicker than AES at passing information as your computer doesn’t have to encrypt things so heavily.

Next, click on X11, and turn on “enable X11 forwarding.” You can also modify the display number if you intend to have multiple machines displaying at once, but I usually leave it as default (display 0).

Finally, let’s go back to the session option at the top of the tree and save our session so we don’t have to type this stuff in every time. I’ll call this connection ‘mycomputer’ and press save down the bottom. Then it’ll appear in the bottom window next time I start PuTTY.

Ok, go ahead and click the Open button in the bottom right corner to connect to your machine. You’ll be greeted with a username/password prompt. Use your standard user login, though – as root logins over any remote connection are a serious no-no.

Good, so we’re now connected via SSH and X11 forwarding is enabled. But we can’t run anything just yet, as we don’t have a local X server to display the information we’re after.

So after installing XMing, I’m going to start it using XLaunch, which can be found in your start menu. There are essentially two main options for us to use. First, we can use multiple windows, which will allow us to run single programs within Windows, kind of like VMWare’s Unity functionality. We’ll try that one first.

The next screen gives us the option to start a client, which essentially we’ve already done with PuTTY. You can select another option, which will use an embedded version of PuTTY to connect to the remote machine transparently and fire off a command, but that’s a howto for another day. For now, we’ll leave it off.

Next up is some advanced stuff about font servers which we won’t worry about at this stage.

And finally the option to save your connection as and .xlaunch file should you want to run it again in the future. Save if you want to, then hit ‘finish’.

Once you do, it’ll disappear and you’ll notice a new X logo in your task tray. This means that the X server is now running and ready to accept commands. Go back to PuTTY and we’ll give it one. In PuTTY, I’ll type ‘firefox &’ – the ampersand breaks the process off and lets it run on its own so we can continue using the terminal.

So running one program at a time is fine, but what happens if we want a full desktop? First thing we’ll do is close our current XMing session by exiting any open programs, right clicking on the X in the tasktray and selecting ‘exit.’ Then we’ll fire up XLaunch again to select a different X server layout.

I’m going to choose ’single window,’ as I prefer to have remote sessions locked a way somewhat.

Hit next all the way through and press finish. You’ll be greeted with an ugly gray crosshatched window.

That’s what an X server looks like when it’s not rendering anything, so there’s no need to panic. But let’s put something up there to cover the blandness.

Back in PuTTY, type ‘gnome-session &’ if you’re a Gnome user, or ‘kde-session &’ if you’re a KDE person. It’ll send a command off to your other computer that it’s to launch your main desktop environment, and after a moment it’ll display like this.

So that’s the ins and outs of connecting to your Linux machine via a seamless X11 forwarded session.

Mac Howto.

Oh, if you’re a Mac user, I probably should tell you how things are done. It’s pretty difficult, so maybe you should all go grab your security blankey right away.

First, open up a terminal session by browsing to your applications folder, then the utilities folder, and clicking on Terminal.

Type the following command:

ssh your.server.ip.address -XC

The X enables X11 forwarding, and the C enables compression.

Once you log in, all you need to do is fire off some commands like ‘firefox &’ and you’re away. Easy, huh?

Remotely possible?

The last thing I’d like to note is that this option is also quite possible over a remote connection (say, from the office so your boss doesn’t know what you’re  browsing). All you need to do is set up some port forwarding on your router and point port 22 at the IP address of your Linux server. Then from the office, fire up PuTTY and enter the public IP address of your internet connection.

alertCierto día me puse a ver este tema en el foro oficial de Archlinux. Si se fijan, en el post #23, de dicho tema, el usuario b9anders, dice que tiene un rendimiento realmente óptimo con su tarjeta de video Intel pues usa los paquetes git de  intel-dri (intel-dri-git) y del driver xf86-video-intel (xf86-video-intel-git). Ambos paquetes están en el AUR. Tuve entonces la mala idea de probar xD. Traté de instalar los paquetes usando yaourt:

$ yaourt -S intel-dri-git xf86-video-intel-git

El asunto es que por un problema de conflictos de dependencias no pude completar la instalación (mirar este post). Entonces, obviamente, instalé de nuevo el paquete xf86-video-intel (que está contenido en los repositorios de Archlinux). Reinicié la máquina y ¡plaf! no funcionaba el servidor x :( . Sólo podía acceder a ese con el usuario root, es decir, me logueaba en modo texto (porque ni siquiera podía ver el kdm) como root y luego corría el comando startx.

Al tratar de iniciar las X como usuario “normal” o con mi usuario “por defecto” el sistema ponía esto en el archivo Xorg.0.log:

(WW) Warning, couldn’t open module i810
(EE) Failed to load module “i810″ (module does not exist, 0)
(WW) Warning, couldn’t open module fbdev

Obviamente lo primero que intenté fue buscar información en google con las palabras: Failed to load module “i810″ (module does not exist, 0) o Failed to load module “fbdev” (module does not exist, 0). Nada de lo buscado y encontrado en google resultó.

Luego de intentar e intentar muchas cosas el primer día xD, el segundo día, logré solucionar el problema gracias a una sugerencia que me dió el usuario skottish en el tema que creé, en el foro oficial de Archlinux, para solicitar ayuda.

La cosa es que no se trataba, directamente, de un problema al tratar de cargar, el sistema, los módulos fbdev e i810, sino que era un error generado por el  archivo .xinitrc (o algo así :P ) que se encontraba en mi carpeta home. Al parecer, al instalar Archlinux, este archivo no se crea, sino que todos los usuarios usan la misma configuración contenida en el archivo /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc (si no me equivoco). Sin embargo, por una razón que olvidé, yo creé dicho archivo en mi home y agregué a ese unos parámetros que no recuerdo, los cuales ya no funcionaban con el driver contenido en el paquete xf86-video-intel. Entonces lo que hice fue borrar, de mi carpeta personal, todos los archivos ocultos que comenzaran con una letra x:

$ rm -f .x*

Reinicié y problema solucionado xD.

Jajajaj la verdad no tenía mierda idea a que se debía específicamente el error, sólo traté y traté de solucionarlo haciendo cosas que fueran posibles de deshacer, hasta que di con esta solución. Ojalá a alguien le sirva igual que a mi en su momento.

Αναφερόμαστε στο νέο μεγαθύριο της ΑΤΙ το οποίο από τον τίτλο καταλαβαίνουμε ότι θα είναι εξοπλισμένο με δύο πυρήνες. Την στιγμή που η νέα 5870Χ2 κάνει την παρθενική της εμφάνιση τότε ο θρόνος θα μεταφερθεί στο στρατόπεδο της ΑΤΙ. Αμ δε όμως…! Η NVΙDIA σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες που σας έχουμε αποκαλύψει εδω και πολλές μέρες ετοιμάζει νέα κάρτα γραφικών της οποίας ο πυρήνας θα ονομάζεται Fermi. Tότε θα μιλάμε για μια κίνηση ματ από την NVIDIA η οποία σαν αστραπη έρχεται να κλέψει την παράσταση, με την μόνη διαφορά ότι η ΝVIDIA θα παραμείνει αρκετό καιρό[next]

Hi,

While playing with quemu+lfslivecd under ubuntu, I came to know about the following commands which sets the locale environment for a linux system(atleast for lfslivecd). Using the following steps, I’ll share the commands and start a new X server with the modified environment.

1. Press ‘ctrl+alt+F1′ to go to virtual terminal 1 or ‘tty1′(To switch back to current gnome session, use ‘ctrl+alt+f7′). Login to that terminal with different userid then the current userid who already logged into current gnome session.

2. type the following command to set the timezone. you can see the timezone data file in /usr/share/zoneinfo/posix/{continent}/{country} where {continent} is the name of your continent like ‘Europe’, ‘Asia’ etc., and {country} is your country name. This file should be pointed by TZ environment variable. The below command will change Timezone to ‘Europe/Spain’.

$ export TZ="Europe/Spain"
$ date

The date command will show the date according to the new timezone.

3. ‘localedef’ command is used to create binary definitions in /usr/lib/locale directory from /usr/share/i18n/ directory, the ‘i18n’ directory contains ‘charmaps’ directory which contains encodings(like ‘UTF-8′ etc). ‘i18n’ also contains ‘locales’ directory which contains definitions for locales. ‘localedef’ will use these two directories to generate a definiton for particular language termed in ‘{LANG}_{COUNTRY}.{ENCODING}’(eg: es_ES.utf8 – means language code ‘es’(spanish), country ‘ES’(spain) and encoding in ‘utf8′). The following command will compile language definition for spanish language in ‘utf8′ encoding.

$ sudo localedef -f UTF-8 -i es_ES --no-archive es_ES.utf8'
$ locale -a | grep 'es_ES.utf8'

‘locale -a’ will show whether language definition added or not.

4. Now we are ready to change the LANG variable, this variable is used by all ‘glibc’s language aware’ applications to switch their output to a particular language, the ourput strings for a particular application for a particular language should be available in ‘{application}.mo’ file inside /usr/share/locale/{LANG}/LC_MESSAGES directory(Distros provide ‘.mo’ files through language specific packages). Now switch the glibc applications to spanish using the following command,

$ export LANG="es_ES.utf8"
$ locale

‘locale’ command will tell the current language.

5. Finally start a new X server using the following command with modified locale. You can switch back to old X server using ‘ctrl+alt+F7′. To switch to new X server, use ‘ctrl+alt+F9′(or ‘ctrl+alt+F10′ if it started in ‘tty10′ virtual terminal)

$ startx -- :1 -br -audit 0 -nolisten tcp

At first, it will ask to change the name of the directories to suite the new language, don’t rename unless you always going to work in the new locale environment.

6. Once you done, ‘Logout’ from the New X server(new gnome session), it will stop the newly started ‘X server’ and put you in ‘tty1′ virtual terminal. ‘exit’ command will exit you from the tty1 terminal. Finally, switch back to old X server’s gnome session using ‘ctrl+alt+F7′.

Παρά τα προβλήματα που έχει τους τελευταίους μήνες ο Πράσινος Γίγαντας με την διαθεσιμότητα τον GeForce GTX 260, GTX 275 και GTX 285, από την άλλη όλοι οι μεγάλοι κατασκευαστές καρτών γραφικών της δείχνουν τεράστια και τυφλή εμπιστοσύνη μιας και οι παραγγελίες για τα επερχόμενα nVIDIA Fermi / GT300 / GF100 chip υπολογίζονται σε τεράστιες ποσότητες. Φαίνεται ότι οι κατασκευαστές πιστεύουν ότι θα τα πάει εξαιρετικά στις πώλησης, ακόμα και στη high-end αγορά, παρά την ύπαρξη των ATi Radeon HD 5000 καρτών γραφικών που ήδη βρίσκονται στα ράφια των καταστημάτων. According to the debian package listing, Awesome 3.3.4-1 is the default version in the package repositories for Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 (Karmic).  At the time of this writing, however, I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Jaunty), for which 2.3.4-1 is the default version of Awesome in the repos.  Furthermore, there is no guide on the Awesome Wiki, nor could I find one elsewhere (I did not look that hard.)

I don’t want to wait till the end of the month for Ubuntu Karmic, nor do I want to start learning an deprecated version of Awesome.  According to what I’ve read, version 3 introduced some pretty substantial changes, and is just that much more awe… uh, excellent.  I’m going to build it and document my steps here with the hope that someone else out there finds them useful.

There are probably different ways to do this; we could install directly from source, or build our own debian package.  I’m going to take the path of least resistance, just to get it up and rolling as fast as possible.

First, get the latest version from awesome’s website.

Then make sure all of the necessary build tools & dependencies are installed

sudo aptitude install build-essential autoconf automake libtool gperf xmlto dpatch fakeroot debhelper

I’m going to try skipping the X dev libs and going straight to installing Lua (the language that Awesome uses for configuration)
– update, tried installing these as a hail mary, it didn’t work.

sudo aptitude install lua5.1 liblua5.1-0-dev

If cmake is not already installed, add it with

sudo aptitude install cmake

Install libev3 with

sudo aptitude install libev3

Unless something blows up, I’m going to skip installing luadoc
– was ‘not found’ by ‘make’ but did not throw an error… installing to see if it solves the ‘convert’ problem
(didn’t, now it’s just found… could maybe live without it?)

The guide I’m (sort of) following lists xcb-util as a build dependency, probably should find out a little more before just blindly installing it.

I’m not rebuilding X.  Frankly, in the time spent trying to get this to work I could have just rebuilt my system with Arch!  In fact, I may very well do just that…

В зависимотях: mplayer с флагом encode (другими словами mencoder), media-video/gpac.
Код сохранить в что-то типа “video5800xm.sh” и сделать chmod +x этому файлу. При запуске без параметров расскажет как им пользоваться. Используется двухпроходное сжатие, поэтому видео должно получаться довольно качественным и с минимальными флуктуациями битрейта. И ещё я заметил, если в исходном файле есть субтитры, то и в конечном  они имеют место быть, правда как хард-саб. А стиль их отрисовки зависит от дефолтных настроек mplayer-а (а-ля ~/.mplayer/config).

Ja, ich hab mir auch ‘nen VServer zugelegt. Warum?
Nun, es bietet die Möglichkeit so ganz nebenbei einen eigenen Teamspeak-Server laufen zu lassen, falls man mal mit jemand quatschen will, beim Entwickeln der nächsten OpenSource, beim Spielen von irgendwas, oder auch einfach mal so. Und wenn man mag, kann man auch noch seine Homepage oder so Zeugs drauf packen. Außerdem ist ein VServer im Grunde nicht teurer als ein weiterer Rechner, der zuhause nur rumsteht, Strom frisst, Lärm produziert und Platz wegnimmt.
Nun zeigt sich aber leider die Problematik, daß das gute Stück im Zusammenspiel mit PuTTY/Xming nicht so ganz gerne X11 Anwendungen auf den heimischen Windows-Rechner bringen mag.
Das grausamste Szenario bleibt, nach jedem Login auf dem Unix-Rechner im Internet, mit der Hand die $DISPLAY-Umgebungsvariable setzen zu müssen. Das nervt natürlich gewaltig, zumal Umgebungsvariablen, wie $SSH_CLIENT und $SSH_CONNECTION in der Regel bereits richtig gesetzt sind. Leider hat PuTTY jedoch Probleme die aktuell korrekte dynamische IP-Adresse für den eigenen DSL-Zugang richtig zu erkennen und entsprechend auf dem Zielsystem zu setzen.
Pfui, PuTTY! ;)

Nun, es gibt dennoch einfache Lösungen für diese Problemstellung, die uns das manuelle Setzen der $DISPLAY Umgebungsvariable einfach machen. Hier eine recht simple Variante davon, vorausgesetzt, die $SSH_CLIENT Umgebungsvariable ist bereits korrekt gesetzt, was jedoch in der Regel der Fall ist, da diese das Zielsystem evaluiert wird, nicht durch PuTTY selbst.
Zunächst extrahieren wir aus $SSH_CLIENT unsere korrekte aktuelle IP-Adresse mit einem kleinen Programm, welches daraus eine “DISPLAY=client-ip:0.0″ Zeichenkette formt und diese auf “stdout” zurückliefert. Die Verwendung von putenv() oder setenv() zwecks direktem Setzen der Umgebungsvariable hätte an dieser Stelle nicht die gewünschte Wirkung.

Der zweite Teil der Lösung ist, unseren generierten $DISPLAY-String in die Umgebung zu schubsen. Das machen wir am besten im “.profile“, welches beim Login ausgeführt wird.
Für eine bash-Shell, wäre das z.B. eine Zeile wie, “export $(./evaldisp)“, wobei “evaldisp” unser kleines Programm wäre, welches die $DISPLAY-Zeichenkette liefert. Die Zeile “export $(./evaldisp)” bewirkt, daß zunächst unser kleines Programm “evaldisp” ausgeführt wird und die zurückgelieferte Zeichenkette “DISPLAY=…” als Variable für den “export” in die Umgebung verwendet wird.

Wenn wir nun nach dem Login in unseren gemieteten Unix-VServer ein X11 Programm aufrufen, müssen wir nicht mehr nachsehen, welche IP Adresse wir aktuell haben und diese mit der Hand setzen, sonder ein simples “xterm”, “emacs” oder “xeyes” reicht nun völlig aus, da die Umgebung bereits das $DISPLAY über unsere kleine Hilfestellung korrekt gesetzt hat.

Und nicht vergessen zuhause Xming laufen zu lassen… man möchte ja auch die X11-Anwendung auf dem Desktop sehen können :)

Hier ein C-Beispiel für unser “evaldisp” Programm, das wir mit “cc evaldisp.c -o evaldisp” compilieren können:
