Ich will hier keine Schleichwerbung machen, aber wenn etwas wirklich gut funktioniert, wird in diesem Land zu wenig darüber geschrieben/geredet. Ich benutze seit Jahren Lenovo Laptops (ehemals IBM) und bin äußerst zufrieden damit. Seit einem Jahr hab ich den X300 und das Gerät ist wirklich klasse. Es ist leicht, das Display ist super, Akku hält lange und Webcam und Lautsprecher sind auch sehr gut. Vor 4 Wochen ist dann der DVD-Brenner kaputt gegangen. Gestern Nachmittag wollte ich mich endlich drum kümmern und was soll ich sagen, das klappte richtig gut. Bin auf die Webseite, hab meinen Typ und  Seriennummer eingetippt und Lenovo hat mir sofort Garantiezeit ausgegeben. Daraufhin hab ich telefonisch Support angerufen und gesagt mein DVD-Brenner wäre kaputt. Die haben nur gefragt, ob ich das selbst wechseln kann und mir prompt nen neuen DVD-Brenner geschickt. Der war heute morgen um 10 Uhr in meinem Büro (noch einmal zur Erinnerung, ich hab dort gestern um 17:00 Uhr angerufen, da gehen andere Support Hotlines gar nicht mehr ans Telefon) und 15 Minuten später eingebaut. Kein Schreibkram, kein Einschicken einfach kurz und problemlos. Ich bin begeistert

Tipis dan stylish tidak cukup untuk menjadi ukuran ketika Anda memilih sebuah laptop. Ada parameter lagi yang patut Anda pertimbangkan, yaitu tangguh secara fisik atau tahan banting. Sebab selama ini laptop tipis identik dengan ringkih. Tetapi keraguan itu kini terbantahkan dengan hadirnya Lenovo seri Thinkpad T400s. Laptop ini diciptakan sebagai komputer jinjing yang ringan, namun tak mengurangi performanya.

T400S memiliki layar berukuran 14 inci pertama yang beratnya tak sampai 2 kilogram. Lenovo memang menonjolkan keseimbangan performa dan bobot untuk jajaran laptop seri T-nya. Adapun seri T400S diinspirasi dari seri sebelumnya, Thinkpad X300, notebook 13 inci yang beratnya tak sampai 2 kilogram. Dengan performa ditingkatkan, namun bobot tetap ringan, T400S diharapkan bisa memenuhi keinginan para pekerja mobile.

Dari segi konektifitas, semua layanan koneksi yang ada juga sudah didukung. Ethernet, Wi-fi, Wimax (opsional), WWAN, Bluetooth, dan Ultrawideband. Laptop seharga U$ 2.349 ini dilengkapi dengan trackpoint yang mana ini berfungsi sama dengan touchpad. Akurasi touchpad tergolong baik dan sudah mendukung multitouch yang mana juga sudah terdapat pada MacBook. T400S juga memakai top cover roll cage generasi kedua yang diperkenalkan pertama kali pada X300. Roll cage dari bahan fiber diperkuat monocoque carbon ini membuatnya sangat ringan juga lebih kokoh.

I’ve posted before about my experimentations with Multiseating.  Well things are starting to come together now.  I have two systems build and being prepared for deployment.  The first, a SoftXpand system, is working fantastically.  The second, nComputing X300 based, has issues.

Having failed to install nComputing on a Windows XP SP3 install and successfully rebuilt that test machine around Windows 2003 Server I built the new machine directly on Windows 2003 Server.  I did all the usual Windows updates, making sure the base OS was 100%, before trying to install nComputing.

Unknown to me (or nComputing it seems) one of the recent Service Packs, released since I built the test machine, is not compatible with the nComputing system.  I get an incompatible ‘win32k.sys’ error from nComputing on boot.  The problem for me is that ALL the updates were installed on the same day (today) and BEFORE nComputing was installed.

So nComputing advise of  – sort by date and remove the last installed update – or – remove any updates back to when nComputing last worked – is not very helpful.

Thankfully my ace detective skills tracked down the offending udate and I removed it.  The Windows 2003 Server nComputing system now works – yeah!

The updates are listed in Add/Remove Programs in KB number order.  I started at the highest KB numbered update and worked my way back.  For each update I checked M$’s website for the list of files changed by that update.  I was looking for the last update that changed the ‘win32k.sys’ file.

After no more than 5 attempts I struck gold.  Offending windows update found and removed.  Hackers of the world I now have a vunrable Win2k3 server if you’d like to come and take ownership!

When Dell announced the Adamo I was mildly curious.  Certainly they’ve made some fine laptops over the years and this new project sounded interesting.   I was hoping for a better spec’d machine, possibly even built better, for less than the hopelessly lame MacBook Air.

Somehow instead they almost seem to have beaten Apple at their own game.  The laptop is thinner, yet weighs a fair amount more… the build quality does sound promising but only time will tell.  It does manage to squeeze in three times as many USB ports as the MacBook Air but seems to have traded in faster processors to do so.  Another bonus is that it can hold more RAM than the Air, but again something is traded in for that improvement.  In this case it’s your hard earned cash.

With a higher starting price than the Air and a good shot at being worse in most performance categories it’s hard to pinpoint what Dell thought was going to happen with this new model.  If they thought they would win the hearts and minds of the gadget geeks they have likely made some severe miscalculations.  First, inexplicably, many have had their share of the Apple Kool-Aid and somehow think Apple makes devices with magical powers and can do no wrong.  The second issue is they’ve released a laptop that probably underperforms and overcharges during a pretty serious economic downturn.

This may flop, or it may be well regarded but suffer from poorer sales than Dell hopes for.  Regardless of how it does, the best laptop in this category is still the Thinkpad X301 (formerly X300) and nobody has yet to reproduce the special sauce used to mix up that compact yet feature-full package.  The X301 could tolerate lower performance because it boasts many other things that the competition can’t match.

Und schon wieder ein Jahr vorüber und wie jedes Jahr gehts nach Berlin zur Online Educa. Ich halte diesmal einen Gemeinschaftsvortrag mit Joel Fisler von der Uni Zürich über “Mega Content Transformation with Open Source Educational Content Project eLML (eLesson Markup Language)” und der ist natürlich am Freitag um 16:30 Uhr, der undankbarsten Zeit, die man haben kann.Vielleicht verirren sich ein paar intrinsisch motivierte Autoren zu uns, falls nicht, ich hab Verständnis dafür. Das Bier an der Bar ist zwar teuer, aber auch lecker

Das eLML Projekt aus Zürich, ist für mich eines der besten Autorentools auf dem Markt und zum Glück Open Source. Wir versuchen gerade unseren Content auf die eLML Struktur anzupassen, was bisher sehr erfolgreich war. Mehr dazu im Vortrag…

Mit viel Glück wird es auch die erste Dienstreise mit meinem neuen Laptop werden. Ich warte täglich auf die Lieferung, denn am Montag wurde mein Lenovo X300 verschickt. Da bin ich richtig mobil mit eingebauter Webcam, UMTS und einer Solid Flash Disk und das ganze wiegt nur 1,3 kg.

Wer auch in Berlin ist und Lust hat mich zu treffen, einfach melden. Ich freu mich einige alte Bekannte und Freunde wiederzutreffen und mir endlich auch einmal ein paar gute Vorträge anzuschauen. Das letzte hab ich bisher noch nie geschafft.

Berlin ist immer eine Reise wert

New job, new laptop. After a few weeks of comparing, reading reviews online, watching viral videos (about laptops of course), buying laptop magazines at airports, etc… I finally decided what to get 2 weeks ago what to get and using it since today. Since I’m traveling quite a bit and spending more time away from a desk than on my desk there were a few key features the new laptop needed to have – in short I wanted a powerful lightweight ultraportable with long battery life. I had my mind made up on the Dell XPS M1330 for a while since it got some good reviews but finally decided for this:

Main reason for picking the Dell would have been the price tag, which is more interesting compared to the Lenovo X300 but overall performance and former Lenovo experience made me choose the X300 eventually. And no, I didn’t take the lame Dell-Manila-Envelope ad into account Truth to be told, in case I had to pay for it myself, it would have been the Dell XPS M1330 without a doubt.

So now it’s all installed, it’s indeed incredibly lightweight, the main battery gives me +3 hours of juice (and ordered an extra battery which should double that) and last but not least with it’s 4Gb or RAM it’s ultrafast Here’s what I installed, programs I need to have on my PC (it runs Windows Vista):

• Twhirl (and thus also AIR)

Yeah, I’m a PC. And I’m actually married to a Mac so probably our kids will turn out to be hybrids I guess (although more chance to see them turn into Xboxes or something)… Let’s not go there

Lenovo just released the X300 ultraportable notebook computer that is supposed to be a competitor to the Apple MacBook Air laptop. The X300 looks pretty good as evident from the following photographs:

However it surely is not as appealing as the MacBook Air when it comes to looks and design.

In terms of slimness, X300 is slim enough. Now for the differences.

Firstly the X300 ships with the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system whereas the Air comes with Apple’s Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. That is a major difference. Vista really has not set the community ablaze with its greatness whereas the Mac OS has definitely earned some rave reviews. Well we really cannot blame Lenovo for this since they do not control Microsoft’s OS business.

The Air has a standard 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with the option of upgrading to a 1.8GHz one. The X300 disappoints in this regard as it offers only a 1.2 GHz version of the Core 2 Duo from Intel. Though this difference in speed would hardly be discernable to most users, the Air might have an edge when it comes to running CPU intensive jobs.

2GB DDR2 SDRAM is standard on the MacBook Air whereas the X300 comes equipped with only 1GB of the same. This is another disappointment. Windows Vista hardly performs with 1GB of RAM. Lenovo should definitely take a look at shipping with 2GB as standard on its machines.

On the wireless front, the Lenovo has built-in support for 802.11 a/b/g/n whereas the Air supports only 802.11 a/b/g. Again this hardly makes much of a difference on most of the wireless networks available today. Then again the Lenovo does have the latest.

The biggest disappointment with the Lenovo lies in the hard drive. The X300 ships with a 64 GB solid state device and does not offer any option of using a traditional drive at all. The Air on the other hand provides more space with the standard 80GB parallel ATA hard drive. Of course you can also opt for a 64 GB solid state device on the Mac at an additional cost.

In the display the Lenovo does offer a better highest resolution. The X300 supports 1440×900 whereas the Air stops at 1280×800.

Where the Mac deparately falls short is in the peripheral connectivity and optical drive systems. The Mac offers a single Micro DVI, 1 USB 2.0 and an audio out port and no DVD drive. That is just not enough. The Lenovo does much better in this regards. It offers 3 USB ports, one headphone port, a line-out port, a microphone/line-in port, a Gigabit Ethernet port and an external display port. Thats a lot when it comes to its small package.

The Lenovo also offers a few WAN choices including one that has GPS funtionality. Wow! That would be a good one to have for the people on the go. The Air does not offer anything like that.

The Lenovo X300 can weigh between 2.93 lb to 3.51 lb with the different options whereas the Mac Air wieghts around 3 lb. Well the Lenovo does offer more options.

So which one to choose? The answer is very clear if you have a preference for a certain operating system. If not then a more careful consideration would be needed. Performance wise both should be performing near to each other. If you need more connectivity the Lenovo X300 seems to be the one. If you need more storage space and can live without all the USB ports and a DVD drive then the Mac Air will suffice. And if you need just the coolness then both would do though personally I find the Air better in this matter.

Lenovo is claiming the X301 has 20 per cent better performance than its predecessor, and the move to Centrino 2 should mean that comes with the benefit of improved battery life also. Price wise, the X301 is set to start from $2,599 (~£1,400) but that will doubtless increase by a decent margin if the 128GB drive option is selected.
