Here are the list of useful commands frequently used during package management.

pkgadd

Adds software packages to the system

pkgrm

Removes software packages from the system

pkginfo

Displays software package information

pkgchk

Checks the accuracy of a software package installation

So, we’ll take an example to use above commands. I’ve a package called SUNWant.Z, which I want to install.

So I use the following syntax to add a package.

pkgadd -d SUNWant.Z

To check whether your package has been installed, you can use pkginfo and grep the output to find a specific package.

pkginfo | grep SUNWant

To check the accuracy of the package, you can use pkgchk command as:

pkgchk SUNWant

To remove above package, we have the pkgrm command to use:

pkgrm SUNWant

How much sense many “security” decisions make, was demonstrated to me again via the half-open connections fix in MS operating systems. XP was introduced to this with SP2 – slower virus spread this and that. Vista, beginning with SP2, dropped it again – just like that. Windows 7 never had it. Are we supposed to believe now, that Vista SP2/7 is less secure than XP with SP2? Or that it was BS all along?

Labprāt pārietu uz Windows 7 x64, šķērslis ir mana licenzētā Vista, tā kas x64, bet Home Basic. Izbaudu legālās OS priekšrocības Varbūt kādam ir kāda lieka Windows 7 licenze? Būtu ļoti pateicīgs!
Kāds man prasīja – kādēļ es lietoju x64 sistēmas? Es atbildēju, ka man ir AMD procesors, un kaut ko par garāku “kumosu” vienā piegājienā. Tad nu šeit atradu stāstiņu cilvēku valodā:

Bieži tiek uzdots jautājums: “Kuru man ņemt? 32-bitu vai 64-bitu OS (operētājsistēmu)?” Te, lūk, būs pēc iespējas saprotamāka atbilde.

Vislielāko labumu no 64-bitīgām OS gūst uzņēmumi, iestādes un geimeri, kur tiem nākas saskarties, ar daudz lielāku datu apjomu. 64-bitu procesori ir radīti, lai kalkulācijas notiktu ātrāk un efektīvāk nekā ar 32-bitu processoru. Piemēram, darbības ar datubāzēm, smagām programām un spēlēm viennozīmīgi būs ātrākas. Bet tas vēl nav viss. 64-bitu OS spēj izmantot daudz lielāku RAM’a atmiņu. Ja 32–bitu Windows Vista maksimāli spēj izmantot tikai 4GB RAM, tad 64-bitu Windows Vista spēj izmantot līdz pat 128GB RAM.

Varu piebilst, ka x86 saprot tikai ~3,5 GB RAM. Bet mans gadījums nav saistīts ar RAM. Ne šoreiz.

AMD Phenom II X6: H AMD επιτίθεται κατά μέτωπον στον Core i9 ! – ( HWBOX ) O/C on first boot

Ακόμα δεν προλάβαμε να συνέλθουμε από την είδηση για τον Intel Core i9 Gulftown και η AMD έρχεται αποφασισμένη να χτυπήσει τον ανταγωνισμό με πολύ δύναμη, δίνοντάς μας πολλές νέες πληροφορίες για τον επερχόμενο εξαπύρηνο AMD Phenom II X6 που θα είναι ο κύριος ανταγωνιστής του Core i9!

 

Έτσι, η AMD φαίνεται πως θέλει να τα βάλει κατά μέτωπον την Intel, μιας και ανακοίνωσε ότι ο AMD Phenom II X6 θα βγει στις αγορές τελικά μέσα στο Q2 2010 και όχι στο Q3 2010, όπως αρχικά είχε ανακοινωθεί, κάτι που φυσικά τον τοποθετεί πλάι-πλάι με τον Core i9. Περαιτέρω, ενώ η Intel ακόμα δεν έχει αποφασίσει τις τελικές συχνότητες για τον Gulftown, η AMD δείχνει σημάδια πρωτόγνωρης αισιοδοξίας, βγάζοντας στον αέρα ότι οι 6 πυρήνες του AMD Phenom II X6 θα λειτουργούν στα 2.8 GHz, βάζοντας “φωτιά” στα AM3 socket μας![next]

Весной 2009 года у блока питания в моём компьютере накрылся кулер, ну или что-то на плате отвечающее за него.

Заметил я это не сразу, а только когда обнаружил стол, в котором стоит системный блок, подозрительно тёплым.
После чего я конечно ринулся к самому системному блоку в котором, из-за температуры, уже можно было как минимум сварить яйца.

Чтобы чего еще не произошло я быстренько выключил компьютер. Дал ему остыть и только после чего включил. Хотя по идее и после этого включать его нельзя, а нести сразу в ремонт.
Но к сожалению я был тогда на мели и тратить деньги на это не захотел.

Но без компьютера жить я не мог и поэтому после коротких передышек я его опять включал.
И так, после нескольких раз, он окончательно заглох и не хотел включаться.
Тогда я снял HDD и опять включил, и вуаля,  включился!
Дал ему немного поработать так, потом выключил, вставил HDD обратно и включил, заработало.
Когда я в следующий раз дал ему отдохнуть, одним жёстким дело не закончилось; нужно было отключить видеокарту, а в следующий раз и вообще все устройства.

Чтобы не потерять связь моего компьютера с этим миром, я его вообще перестал выключать. И он  молодец! Работал два месяца не покладая рук. Но не до тех пор пока не отбросил коньки, а просто я поменял БП!

Можно было бы сказать, что мы жили долго и счастливо, но увы; через две недели после смены БП сгорела видеокарта; не сказать, что я не ожидал, я давно хотел её поменять, и вот стимул.
Вот что я действительно не ожидал, так из-за чего она сгорела:
в то время как компьютер работал без одного “лёгкого” , кое что, оказывается, произошло, а именно то, что кулер на видеокарте из-за температуры, по закону физики, подплавился и сошёл с основной оси вращения, после чего застрял в радиаторе.
И всё оставшееся время она работала без охлаждения.

Видеокарточку я поменял на очень не плохую, нынешнюю.

Работаю-работаю, захотелось поиграть, так сказать “потестить” новое железо – качаю новую игрушку. Через 20 минут игры в ту игру, компьютер зависает и перезагружается.
После еще нескольких попыток поиграть я решаю, что игра для моего компьютера слишком серьёзная.
Но когда я установил игру, что шла на моей еле работающей старенькой видеокарте, и не смог поиграть и пяти минут, понял, что что-то не так.

Проблема может быть в чём угодно, но я решил свалить всё на новую видеокарту, мол брак. НО, после попыток сыграть во многие игры, обнаружилось две игры из которых не вылетает и причём достаточно требовательные – это Mass Effect и Red Faction Guerilla.

Серия игр Red Faction меня, кстати, постоянно удивляет.
Как они смогли сделать такую физику, что можно любой объект разнести на маленькие кусочки, а именно можно скульптуры лепить из объектов мира RF – там чуть отстрелил, тут чудок отколол и вуаля.
А первая часть этой игры у меня отлично шла со сквозной дыркой в диске, реально! Каждый раз думал: “Вот, сейчас вот он точно взорвётся” , но как бы ни так, всегда работал.

Ну и так, по теме. Потащил видюху в сервис центр – всё отлично, тестирую у друзей, опять. Да еще обнаружил, что шина на компьютере упала с 800 MHz до 667 MHz, после чего сомнений уже не было, что это мать или проц.

Работаю я себе работаю, решил поставить новый Уиндоус 7. И что вы думаете, не ставится, зараза, хоть убейте. Мне требуется много усилий чтобы запустить установку, но последнюю перезагрузку компьютер не выдерживает – постоянно виснет.
Подумал, что дело в старой сборе ОС. Начал ставить более новую – то же самое. И со всеми последующими то же самое. Мысль о том что с компьютером что-то не так окончательно засела в голове. Поставил обратно Висту x64 Ultimate, которая, кстати, у меня летает, не смотря не все негативные отзывы о ней.

Спустя некоторое время обнаружил проблему – мой КПК отказывается синхронизироваться с 64х-битной системой. Начал ставить x86, но О-ПА, не ставится!
А-ха, кажется дело проясняется и ставлю обратно Висту x64 и скачиваю 7ку x64.
И … так и есть, ставится! И поставилась. Вот сижу, любуюсь.

Вот думаю. Это чтож получается, мой компьютер не поддерживает 32-разрядную архитектуру!? Такое разве бывает!?

Раз произошло, значит бывает, придётся всё-таки менять железо, как не печально.

So it’s now October 22nd and you know what day it is? Yes, Halloween is just around the corner, but that’s not it. It’s even more significant than that. Today is the day Microsoft officially releases their new, revamped operating system Windows 7. It has been a long almost 3 years since we were blindsided with Vista and had to suffer through the ensuing hell. Well now, the dark cloud has lifted and the light at the end of the tunnel has revealed itself in the form of Windows 7. Or has it?

Pricing and upgrade

Typical Microsoft move, right here. They over-price the software and, on top of that, they bring about confusion as to how to go about upgrading. If you would take a look at the table above, there are 66 squares regarding the upgrade path to Windows 7. Out of those 66 squares, there are only 14 “easy” ways to upgrade. For a nerd, upgrading is easy. We back up our stuff periodically anyways, so migrating shouldn’t be too much of a hassle. On the other hand, the vast majority of Windows users, sadly, are not nerds and don’t back up periodically. In that case, all your setting will have to be added again manually. So upgrading basically goes like this:

• From Windows XP and Windows Vista Starter, there is no direct upgrade path. You’ll have to do a clean install.
• 32-bit can upgrade only to 32-bit, 64-bit can upgrade only to 64-bit.
• Windows Vista Home Basic and Premium, 32 and 64 bit, can upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium or Ultimate.
• Windows Vista Business can upgrade to Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate
• Windows Vista Ultimate can only upgrade to Window 7 Ultimate

Simple enough? Well, at least the fellas in Redmond think so. Luckily, if you’re running anything from XP onwards, you can purchase the upgrade versions which will save you considerable moolah. Next up is pricing. Vista got a lot of heat due to its high prices. Windows Vista Ultimate was originally sold at $399 and later dropped to $319. Their current prices are not very different. The full version of Windows 7 Ultimate will run you $319 while the upgrade(which applies to most of you) is $219. Upgrading to Windows 7 Professional and Home Premium are $199 and 119, respectively.

First impressions

For those of us who were brave enough to try out the Windows 7 Beta and Release Candidate have grown to cope better with this latest Windows iteration. More or less an incremental change (that is extremely debatable), Windows 7 comes with improved functionality and visuals. It is not sluggish, by any stretch of the imagination (except in booting). Running this on my 4-year-old desktop and Macbook Pro saw little if any hiccups. First of all, you’ll notice that it isn’t as much as a resource hog as Vista. They are touting this OS to be able to run well on a netbook, so I’m sure your PC should be able to cope. The visual style has some differences than its much insufferable predecessor.

UI enhancements

Like Vista, Windows 7 has a really clean, bubbly feel to it. Microsoft has added small enhancements to improve the Windows experience.

Taskbar

You’ll probably first notice the task bar. It now contains icons of the programs you set there for quick access or the programs that are running. Great thought, but it can be a lot more functional. For instance, switching quickly between apps is a pain if you have more than one window open. Let’s say that I have several Firefox windows open in the background and I’m currently using Microsoft Word. To go to Firefox, you instinctively click on the icon. Unfortunately, the only thing that does is show you a preview window of what you have open and then you click on what you were looking for. It could be faster, but you can live with it. This view is set by default. If you prefer the old way the taskbar looked (with the name of the program), that can be changed by right-clicking the taskbar.

Aero Peak

A cool addition is the new Aero Peak feature. Again, it is reminiscent of Mac OS X, Exposé this time. Placing your cursor in the bottom right hand corner of the screen will you your desktop as well as an outline of all your open windows. Clicking will minimize all open windows.

Aero Snap

I’m sure Microsoft wants all of us to be productive and to make full use of our screen real estate. That is the vibe I’m getting with this feature. Dragging a window to the left side of the screen will have it fill up the left half of the screen. The same happens if you drag to the right and the right half will be filled. Dragging to the top will maximize your window. I’m sure you’re all fans of keyboard shortcuts and Microsoft has you covered. Holding the Windows key combined with the left or right arrow will fill the corresponding half. Quite the handy tool. No one likes double-clicking windows. That is so 2007.

Aero Shake

This is, hands down, the funnest addition. Grabbing hold of a window and vigorously shaking it will minimize the other windows. Shaking again will bring them back up. However hilarious at first look this may seem, it is actually very helpful once you get used to it.

Other enhancements

Luckily for the end-user, the improvements go beyond the pretty new looks on Aero. The start menu as well as folder functionality have seen some considerable improvements.

Start Menu

If you’re the lucky few to survive Vista, the Start menu will seem very familiar. The main improvement here is speed. Using the search box will yield results much quicker than previously.

Folders

You can bet that productivity is not compromised. The folder options at the top of a window brings even more function just a mouse-click away. Instead of digging into a submenu to print a certain document, mail it out or just to create a new folder, you have those tasks accessible directly. Once again, you see the theme of less clicking to improve how you work on the machine.

The preview pane does allow to, well…preview, what you selected. Excel document, music file, you name it, it can probably preview it. Nice addition, not well executed. I ran into the problem of it not previewing every image in my pictures folder, even though others of the same file type and resolution were rendered fine.

Windows XP Mode

If there was one thing Microsoft had to include, this certainly should have been it. This is even better than the Aero shake. The problem with Vista was that after switching, many of your programs just did not work. Basically, your experience was broken. Now you have a wonderfully woven safety net to fall back on should you need to rely on XP. This feature will be available for download on the release day of Windows 7.

Final Thoughts

Oh Microsoft. You are quite the enigma. First, you gave us a fantastic operating system in Windows XP, sent us into oblivion with Vista and brought good to our PC’s and semi-redeemed yourself. This is what Vista should have been. Windows XP emulation? It’s almost 3 years late, but we’ll forgive you. You did bring us the Aero shake. I’m sure all the young hip kids will coin it a new dance in no time. Of course, it’s not perfect. It rarely is. You can’t install a program without a security message babysitting you and asking you if you want to install. Yes, if I clicked on it, I’m pretty sure I wanted to install that. Windows 7 is recommended. If you’re using XP and on the fence, go for it – if you don’t mind the ensuing hell while trying to get you files back. If you’re using Vista – this is what you’ve been waiting for.=. The end product is definitely worth it.

Ιntel Celeron P4500 o νέος Mobile Arrandale CPU της Intel ! – ( HWBOX ) O/C on first boot

η Intel πρόκειται να λανσάρει έναν νέο επεξεργαστή ο οποίο θα ανήκει στην οικογένεια των Celeron επεξεργαστών και θα έχει την ονομασία P4500. Συγκεκριμέναι θα είναι διπύρηνος με δύο threads χρονισμένος στα 1.86 GHz. Κάτι το οποίο πρόκειται να ενθουσιάσει αυτούς που πρόκειται να τον χρησιμοποιοήσουν είναι η χωρητικότητα της μνήμης cache η οποία θα φτάνει τα 2ΜΒ.[next]

Η Advanced Micro Devices ανακοίνωσε σήμερα τη νέα σειρά desktop μικρο-επεξεργαστών της, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των πρώτων 3-πύρηνων Athlon.

Οι νέοι επεξεργαστές αποτελούν μέρος της νέας σειράς και κατατάσσονται ανάμεσα στους διπύρηνους Athlon II X2 και τετραπύρηνους Athlon II X4. Η ταχύτητα των επεξεργαστών κυμαίνεται μεταξύ 2.2GHz και 2.9GHz, ενώ καταναλώνουν ενέργεια έως και 95Watts[next]

I’ve been busy writing my own boot loader for the past few days, it’s really quite simple to make a basic boot loader so I’m going to explain it a bit here.
What is a boot loader
A boot loader is a very small program (512 bytes) that is loaded by the BIOS when you turn on your computer, boot loaders can be placed on many forms of media, such as, hard drive disk, floppy disk, CD/DVD-ROM, flash memory and others.
The job of the boot loader is, in the most basic form, is the loading the kernel of whatever operating system you are using, such as Windows or Linux, more advanced boot loaders can do other stuff to prepare the system such as switching into Protected Memory mode.

While a very basic boot loader is very simple to make, in general you need to do a lot of work to make something that is functional, for example the size of the initial boot loader is extremely limited, 510 bytes is very very little space to work in so most of the code in this part is designed to load a additional boot loader in higher memory.
When the computer first boots it is placed in Real Mode, in this mode you can only use the 8 and 16 bit registers and you can only address memory up to the 1MB mark, so kernels larger that 1MB need to be loaded by using UnReal mode which allows access above the 1MB mark while not fully switching into Protected Mode.

This is the code origin, the actual bootloader is loaded by the BIOS at 0×7C00 however the BIOS can place the address as 0×0000:7C00 or 0×07C0:0×0000 (CS:IP), the org 0×7C00 ensures IP = 0×7C00

This jumps to the _start label while also making sure CS = 0×0000

This is just to make sure CS and DS are equal

Disables interrupts and halts the processor, you would normally place your boot loader code before this.

This zeros the remaining bytes up to the 510th byte.

dw 0xAA55

Boot signature, this two byte code at bytes 511 and 512 tells the BIOS that there is a boot loader and it should load the code into memory.

To compile and write the boot loader do the following:

dd if=loader.bin of=/dev/fd0 bs=512

Replace /dev/fd0 with the device you want to write to.

Μπορεί οι Core i5 και i7 πού κυκλοφορούν ήδη (45nm) να μην έχουν αντίπαλο στην κατηγορία τους, όμως στην Intel γνωρίζουν πολύ καλά πως η μάχη κάτω από τα €150 παραμένει αμφίρροπη και η AMD σημειώνει μεγάλο μέρος των πωλήσεών της σε αυτήν. Έτσι, προετοιμάζει πυρετωδώς νέα μοντέλα επεξεργαστών για να χτυπήσει τις χαμηλότερες κατηγορίες, τα οποία μάλιστα θα είναι και τα πρώτα desktop κομμάτια πού θα κατασκευάζονται στα 32nm.[next]

Today has been quite a busy day, I’ve been playing around with the GNU AS assembler, it took me quite a while to figure it out as I’m not used to the AT&T syntax. Personally I prefer the Intel syntax over AT&T, but as the AT&T syntax is used in C inline it’s well worth learning.

EAX = 4 is the SYS_WRITE call, with EBX being STDIN, ECX being the memory address of msg, and finally EDX being the msg length.
EAX = 1 is SYS_EXIT, EBX being the return value.

Τα έσοδα της εταιρείες περιορίστηκαν κατά 8% στα 9,4 δισ. δολάρια, ενώ οι αναλυτές περίμεναν 9,1 δισ. δολάρια.
