More than 92000 test takers had taken XAT on 6th January 2013. XAT results were declared on January 17th 2013. XLRI had received a few complaints from XAT takers recently regarding a technical error in particular series of test paper.

Informing MBAUniverse.com, XAT convener Prof. Ballabh, said today afternoon that instead of just checking a few complaints, XLRI thought it prudent to check all the papers. This will ensure that all XAT takers are at par on the process of re- evaluation, and it is fair to all.

“Yes we have received a few complaints regarding a particular test series paper. Upon review we found that there was indeed an error. Instead of only correcting and updating score of few complainants, to be fair to all, we are rechecking all test papers,” said Prof. Ballabh.

When asked by mbauniverse.com, when would the updated scores and percentile  be issued, Prof. Ballabh said, “we are doing the process of review as swiftly as possible. We hope to update the score very soon.”

Hence, it is expected that this process of review will have some impact on the scores and percentiles of candidates although the impact is expected to be a minor one. The revised scores will soon be available on the XLRI website.

Let’s take a brief look at the top 10 institutes which accept XAT scores:

• XLRI Jamshedpur

The XAT cut-offs for BM is 80 percentile in EL, 80 percentile in DM, 90 percentile in QA and overall 95 percentile.

The XAT cut-offs for HRM is 85 percentile in EL, 80 percentile in DM, 70 percentile in QA and overall 92 percentile.

• SPJIMR Mumbai  

Criteria for short-listing candidates for group interview are consistent good academic performance, relevant work experience, versatility and achievements and test scores. Overall XAT Cut-off is 85 Percentile and the sectional XAT Cut-off is 70 Percentile. This year, SPJIMR will have the interview process scheduled during February and March.

Further details regarding the interview process will be announced in due course of time.

• TAPMI Manipal

Based on the successful performances in GD with a threshold score (to be announced), candidates will be asked to appear for PI on the same day. They are also required to write an essay on a topic of relevance to test their written communication abilities. The last date for registration is 5th February 2013.

• IMT Ghaziabad

The following factors are considered in making a final offer: best test score, work experience, academic record and performance during the written communication test and the personal interview round.

IMT Ghaziabad will be offering 480 seats in PGDM and 180 in dual-country PGDM. IMT Nagpur will be offering 360 seats and IMT Hyderabad will be offering 240 seats.

• BIMTECH:

XAT scores are also accepted by BIMTECH for courses like PGDM (Insurance Business Management), PGDM (Retail Management) and PGDM (Sustainable Development).

There is no cut-off pre-defined, but the merit list is prepared on the basis of CAT/XAT/MAT percentile for calling candidates for GD and Interview in a ratio of 1:10 for total number of seats in all the programmes after all the applications have been received by closing dates.

Apart from GD, PI &WAT, suitable weightages for work experience, academic & regional backgrounds, professional qualification, etc are also given.

• Great Lakes Chennai:

It does not have sectional cut offs for CAT/GMAT/XAT. There is no minimum score to apply. Great Lakes considers the complete profile including academic performance and relevant work experience. Applicants are evaluated based on GMAT/CAT/XAT scores, past academic performance, work experience and essays & performance in the interview and group discussions.

Last date of submission: 31 January 2013

• XIM Bhubaneswar:

The final selection will be made on the basis of the candidate’s performance in the XAT/CAT as well as in the Written Ability Test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview (which factors in the past academic record and relevant work experience). Selected candidates will be informed by mail in April.

Additional weightage on the XAT/CAT score and the WAT, GD & PI score will be given to the candidates who are residents of the state of Orissa. This may lead to a separate set of cut-off marks for them.
XISS Ranchi :The institute gives 50% weightage to XAT/CMAT scores. Weightages for past academic record is 10% group discussion 15% and personal interview 25%.

Three-stage admission process is followed by the institute as per the guidelines of AICTE. These stages are:

1. All India Management Admission Test

2. Group Discussion

3. Personal Interview

The registrations are open till 2 Feb 2013

• Loyola Institute of Business Administration, Chennai

Candidates who have applied to LIBA will be short listed only on the basis of their XAT 2013/CAT 2012 scores. Short listed candidates will be called for Group Discussion and interview for final selection at Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.

The last date for application is 10th February 2013.

Final cut-off for XAT 2013 will be announced later in February.

• XIME Bangalore

Criteria for judging suitability of candidates for admission to the PGDM Programme are academic record, XAT/CAT score, performance in Group Discussion, performance in Personal Interview and work experience (if any).

Last date to apply is 28th February.

For all those who have scored high marks in XAT 2013 exams, the above list of institutes should be their target provided they fill the minimum eligibility criteria of the respective institute.

It is rightly said, “He who fails to plan, plans to fail”. Nobody can undermine the importance of planning when doing any important task, and if it means preparing for the XAT exam, you should be even more careful. The Study Plan should be such that you assign yourself some chapters to study every week, so that you are able to complete your syllabus in time.

Know the syllabus and exam pattern very well. Analyze the previous year’s questions and be prepared for any kind of change in the pattern of exam.

You need to understand your strengths and weaknesses for any test preparation, like you can be strong in Mathematics, average in DI and totally clueless in RC. This is important because then you will create your plan to turn your weaknesses into strengths and ignore certain weaknesses if they are not important from exam point of view and improve your strengths.

Q: Shubhanker: Do scores in the GK section of XAT are considered while giving out final percentiles?
A: No, this will be used at a later stage for admission to XLRI. Some of the XAT associate institutes may ask for the GK scores and it will be supplied to them.

Q: Darshan: Can you give us some idea about typical essay topics?
A: It should be related to some current domestic or international topics. Last year, it was related to poverty.

Q: Amar: I am taking up mock tests for XAT but not doing too well in any of the sections. What do you suggest me to do in the last few days? How can I prepare for Reading Comprehension?
A: You should read paragraphs carefully and discuss the meaning of words in the paragraph with your friends during practice. Generally, questions are analytical in comprehension. Practise as much as you can and be selective to answer the question. If you are not sure, skip it.

Q: Rakesh Vankar: Is the essay part treated as a separate section as this is the subjective part of the exam. What is exact weightage of essay?
A: Both the essay and GK have weightage of 20 marks each. It is not used for deciding cut off, but is used later for admission to XLRI. Some other institutes also ask for admission to their institutions.

Q: Pratik Ambani: What are the important topics in Quant & Reasoning?
A: The topic will be arithmetic, algebra, mean, median and mode, interest and compound interest, data sufficiency, chart bar, etc.

Q: Anand: What is the level of this year’s XAT paper in comparison to previous years and how is the pattern different? What type of questions should we expect in the GK section?
A: Questions are likely to be on the similar pattern but we are giving more time and therefore, with little more practice one can do better. The GK questions will be on current affairs on political and economic issues.

Q: Gyan Srivastav: What are the parameters which would be considered for the essay writing section?
A: Idea and presentation in a coherent manner including the construction of sentences and their impact on the reader’s mind.

Q: Ankush: What is the basic difference between GD/PI session in IIMs and that in XLRI?
A: I do not know what IIMs look for, but we look for attitude, presentation of idea, listening and understanding others’ point of view. Personal interview have several dimensions.

Q: Amisha: Is it compulsory to attempt all the Reading Comprehension questions in the Verbal Ability section?
A: No, it is not necessary. In fact you should be selective in answering the questions in all sections. Wrong answers invites penalty.

XAT is different from other exams as you need to write Essay also. The duration of the test is 120 minutes for the objective type section and an additional 20 minutes is provided at the end of the 2 hours for the essay writing section.

XAT primarily tests three areas – your decision making abilities, working under pressure and deadlines, and the ability to capitalize on ones’ strengths.

XAT 2013

The duration of XAT 2013 will be increased to 3 hours from to 2 hours and 20 minutes. Previously, the duration of the three sections was 2 hours and that of the essay writing was 20 minutes. According to Prof. Ballabh, the exam will be divided into two parts. The first part would have domain-specific sections and its duration would be 2 hours and 20 minutes. The next part would not only have an essay writing question, which is common for XAT paper, but would also have a section on general awareness. The duration of this part will be 40 minutes, divided equally between essay writing and the general awareness section.

The general awareness section will have 20-30 questions. The total number of questions in the three sections varies from year to year. Last year, there was a drop in the number of questions from 101 to 85. The number of questions for XAT 2013 has not been decided yet. “This year, the number of questions will remain more or less the same. The capability of solving the questions depends on the difficulty level, and not on the number,” Prof Ballabh said.
106 B-schools to accept XAT 2013 scores

This year, 106 B-schools will accept the scores of XAT exam compared with 101 in the previous year. The rise in the number provides aspirants a better chance of admission. Apart from top B-schools like XLRI, LIBA, Chennai; XIME, Bangalore; XISS Ranchi; Goa Institute of Management; TAPMI, Manipal; BIMTECH, Greater Noida; BULMIM, New Delhi; Asia-Pacific Institute of Management, New Delhi; IFMR, Chennai; SPJIMR, Mumbai; WeSchool, Mumbai; Jaipuria Institutes of Management; Gitam Institute of Management, Vishakhapatnam, and Globsyn Business School, Kolkata; Mudra Institute of Communication Ahmedabad (MICA) will accept XAT 2013 scores for the first time.

The registration process for XAT 2013 is going on at present. The registration window started from August 12 and the last date is November 30, 2012.

The exam will have two parts. Talking exclusively to MBAUniverse.com, Prof. Vishwa Ballabh, admission chairperson of XLRI, said: “The duration of XAT 2013 will be of three hours. While domain-specific questions will form the first part, the next part will not only have essay writing, a regular feature of XAT exam, but also a general awareness section that we are introducing from this year.”

Earlier, XAT duration was 2:20 hours.

Explaining the rationale behind the change, Prof Ballabh said, “We want to have students from diverse backgrounds. So, XAT is not just meant for students from the engineering and science backgrounds, but from the social science background as well. That is precisely the reason why we have extended the duration of the teat. We want students to take their time and answer as many questions as possible.”

“We need versatile students who can excel in the management field. We want test takers to have equal knowledge about business knowledge, economics, politics and social developments. That is precisely the reason why we are adding the general awareness section.”

The general awareness section will have 20-30 questions. XLRI is yet to decide on the number. Last year, the total number of questions in three sections was 85. “This year, the number of questions will remain more or less the same. The capability of solving the questions depends on the difficulty level, and not on the number,” Prof Ballabh said.

It is compulsory for all the students to attempt the second part of the XAT paper which will comprise essay writing and general awareness questions. However, only some B-schools consider scores of essay writing. “B-schools like XIMB and SPJIMR ask for scores of essay writing. SPJIMR even asks for the essay itself in order to judge the thought process and the written communication skills,” said Prof. Ballabh.

The XLRI chairperson has some words of advice for XAT 2013 aspirants. “XAT is a very innovative exam and we diversify questions. You need to have analytical and practical ways of thinking in order to solve questions correctly. Don’t mug up answers as it would not help you perform well. Instead, develop your thinking ability.”
