Before I get stuck into The Great Australian $5 Wine Challenge, i’ve got a stack of wine revie

Before I get stuck into The Great Australian $5 Wine Challenge, i’ve got a stack of wine reviews to get through. So, in between studying for my Wine Marketing exams, i’ll be putting up reviews of what has (and hasn’t) been tickling my tonsils lately. First up is a gluggable, great value Biodynamic Pinot from the Yarra Valley. I love Wedgetail Eagles. My favourite bird in the world. So graceful. Except when they are ripping apart Roadkill on the side of the road, but hey… An eagle’s got to eat. But my love of Wedgetails has not influenced my review of this wine. Cos it’s always about what is in the bottle. Always.

I picked this up on a recent visit to the Wedgetail Estate Cellar Door. If you are ever in the Yarra on a weekend, I highly recommend popping into the Cellar Door, which is definitely off the beaten track but well worth the effort. The winemaker Guy is at the Cellar Door and is more than happy to answer any questions about his wines and his winemaking journey via France and the Mornington Peninsula.

The Cellar Door at Wedgetail estate is open Saturday and Sunday – noon to 5:00pm February, March, April and September, October, November.

THE PRICE :: $24 from http://www.wedgetailestate.com.au/

CELLAR POTENTIAL :: Perfect now, or keep it for up to 3 years.

SCORE :: 92 Points

MUSIC MATCH :: This wine is fresh and vibrant with a conscience. No herbicides or insecticides used in it’s production. If the wine’s a bit of a greenie then the music should be too. So take your pick. Blue King Brown. Bob Marley. Xavier Rudd. All go down at treat with this Pinot. Just no Midnight Oil. Save that for matching with a wine that sold it’s soul!

THE INFO :: This is the perfect Pinot for people who don’t yet know they love Pinot. On the nose this is all about the red berries and savoury spices. Great integrity/continuity on the palate with strawberries, cherries and cream combining with the subtle spiciness to produce a delicious, well-balanced wine.

It’s not overly complex, it’s doesn’t have amazing length but it’s not a wine that needs to be discussed while stroking your chin. It’s a wine for giving to your friends who haven’t tried much Pinot. And then watch them knock it back with frightening speed. Heck, my mate who tasted it at the Cellar Door with me had never even heard of Pinot Noir and he absolutely loved this wine. As has everyone i’ve given it to since. Even if you don’t like Pinot, grab some of this. Support the little guy. Support sustainable farming practices with minimal impact on the earth. You might just feel as good about yourself as your taste buds will when this little beauty smothers them with Pinot love.

Welcome to Volume 1 of PopBRiefs. PopBRief posts will a veritable mixed bag of music and Pop Culture, mashed up into one long extended guitar solo that hopefully won’t make your ears (or eyes) bleed.

Feature articles may or may not include:

Headliners (the big issues in pop culture this week)

Cover Story (a flashback to dodgy album artwork over the years)

Polling Stone (pressing pop culture questions that need answering)

Bad Ink (a lesson in ‘what not to do’ at the tattoo parlour)

Lady Mondegreen (favourite misheard lyrics of all time)

Do Yourselves A Favour (Song Of The Week, with a tip of the Akubra to Molly Meldrum)

In this Volume, we kick off with…

Headliners

Disturbing news from Rolling Stone this week, that in the US edition of Guitar Hero 5, you can unlock the character of Kurt Cobain and make him sing a number of popular non-Nirvana hits.

Some of the tunes in question include Bon Jovi’s ‘You Give Love A Bad Name’, and even Bush’s ‘Come Down’, which NME found deeply ironic (given that Gavin Rossdale channeled Cobain most of his career). A big, fat finger is being pointed at Courtney Love who manages Cobain’s estate – must be desperate times to perform such a sell-out, Courtney!

In other news, The Beatles are looking to revive a flagging global CD sales market, with a remastered back catalogue being released 45 years after their launch on to the scene.

Abbey Road engineers spent four years remastering the work. The Beatles: Rock Band also went on sale Sept 9th, featuring 45 of their most popular tunes for avid gamers to faithfully recreate or massacre at their whim. The Wall Of Sound is going to be difficult to reproduce on a game controller…

Polling Stone

The formation of supergroup Them Crooked Vultures (Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones) and their secret gig at Leeds festival ‘09 has left many rock fans wondering ‘is this the best supergroup ever?’

The irresistible combination of Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters and QOTSA members are about to set off on a US/UK tour, and will visit Australian shores in January.

Well, what do you think?

Cover Story

Herbie Mann - Push Push

This week’s Cover Story has a lot of Ron Burgundy about it: jazz flute slung over the shoulder, and oozing topless sensuality. It features Herbie Mann, and his masterpiece ‘Push Push’.

His work was sampled on Jennifer Lopez’s hit single ‘Jenny From The Block’ – meaning the royalties are still rolling in. But unfortunately for Herbie, he died only a year after its release.

Bad Ink

This week’s Bad Ink features the combination of the King Of Rock and candy. Yep, you guessed it… Elvis as a PEZ dispenser. Thanks to COED Magazine for the artwork.

Do Yourselves A Favour

‘Song Of The Week’ this time around goes to Xavier Rudd, and the ultra-chilled title track from the 2005 release ‘Solace’. The soothing lyrics of the Australian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist are perfect for any lazy afternoon.

If you have not, check out John Butler Trio and Xavier Rudd. They’re both extremely talented musicians and their lyrics are so positive. I’ve seen Xavier Rudd live and it’s an amazing performance to see. I almost like him better live than I do just listening to him on a cd. I haven’t seen John Butler live…YET but I hear he is equally amazing. So check them out…it might not be the type of music you like but give it a chance, never know. I’ll post links to some of my favorite songs by them (I’ve already previously posted Ocean by John Butler Trio…go listen to it! It will blow you away.)

The last time I saw Xavier Rudd, I wasn’t happy about it. I grumbled about it here, almost a year ago. Xavier is unfailingly amazing, but the crowd last year sucked. Just sucked. And on top of that, Xavier seemed like he was in a funk. He’d just released a much more personal, much darker album, and on stage he seemed just a bit out of sorts, like he wasn’t having the fun that he usually had with it, like whatever natural high he got from the recursive transfer of energy between himself and the crowd just wasn’t happening, or, perhaps more accurately, that the stuff he needed from the crowd to do what he does was not arriving. Xav was down, the crowd was an ocean of assholes, and I left feeling bad because he deserves better.

Cut to last night, Xav was back at First Ave. (a venue I have decidedly mixed feelings about, e.g., pretentious hipster crowd, but awesome, oiled-machine security dudes). I was worried about a repeat of last year’s downer, but right from the first note of the first song, it was apparent that Xavier was back in old form, perhaps better than old form. Playing with him were a drummer and a bass player from South Africa, and those three dudes were flat having a ball up on that stage, goofing around, giving each other fist bumps and playful jabs, smiling like crazy, taking older songs off into ten-minute jammy tangents. Xav blew into those didges and strummed those guitars with what seemed a renewed sense of purpose, as if the darker album and tour had cleansed something out of him, and now all the good stuff was free to backfill. The energy was there, the crowd was great, Xav was having a ball, and I left just feeling good. I think Xav is one of of the best, more positive things going in music right now, and last night he proved it. More than once, he deflected the audience attention away from himself and onto the two very talented musicians playing with him–the word gracious came to mind. Xav’s just a dude who loves to get up that and do what he does, and each time I’ve seen him–even that show last year–I’ve had the sense that I was watching a guy who was doing exactly what he’s supposed to be doing.

After the show, they played Bob Marley over the house speakers, and in every stall in the men’s room, all the dudes were singing along to “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright.” One guy, his words slurred with beer, announced, “Hey, if any of you are worryin’ about some shit, stop it. Bob says so.”

But as borderline cliche as that sentiment is, walking out of a Xav show, three so far, usually finds me feeling like, in spite of all the shit, things are gonna be cool, daddy-o.

Foto: stephaniegaga

What started as a random collection of covers ended up turning into a decidedly Beatles themed post. Purely coincidental. I’m sure if you could be bothered hunting around though you’d find a plethora of information out there guaranteed to satisfy any deep-seated need for Beatles covers.

Bluesfest went back to normal yesterday after the only stage with STP and Gym Class Heroes.
I have to say it was a calm night. And its before the big spectacle of KISS which happens to be tonight.

The acts that I saw were:

Marc Charron

The Allrights

Ice Cube
Surprised that I got to take photos of his set, considering hip-hop acts have very tight security.
Still have my head scratching to why he opened up for Our Lady Peace.
No offence, he is more of a bigger draw celebrity wise.

The Yardbirds
Somehow being in the Subway Stage I felt like I was in Woodstock.

Xavier Rudd
Got to love the didgeridoo.
The Zombies
Wasn’t expecting to be poppy-rock but at least the people there enjoyed them.

Our Lady Peace
I was happy hearing the classics like One Man Army and Superman’s Dead.
While waiting in line for Xavier Rudd’s autograph which took forever, I did get to hear their whole set.
Happy that I heard Clumsy, 4 AM and Is Anyone Home?

Xavier Rudd – Dark Shades of Blue
Maybe more than any of his previous albums, Xavier Rudd’s Dark Shades of Blue is a balance of darkness and light. That’s what the Australian singer-songwriter/one-man band/didgeridoo virtuoso hears in the disc. Plenty of each went into making the disc. Dark Shades of Blue is the first Rudd album in several years to be recorded in Australia. As a result, it bears the joy and peace of mind that comes with an often-touring artist that gets a chance to catch his breath.

On Friday I had one of those rare nights where I could get all dressed up and not just be a Mummy. For once I was able to partake in the benefits of having a husband who is tied into the music scene in Vancouver.

We went to 2 live shows. We checked out the newly renovated Venue (formerly The Plaza…although the sign out front still says The Plaza). Venue as I’m told it’s called, not The Venue, is sharp looking inside. They have some pretty fancy light fixtures going on. It’s along the same lines as The Caprice night club but they are also a live music venue now. They have a capacity of 500 which is about the same as Richards. I’m sure with Richards closing in about 2 weeks, that is the business they are after. However, they do have an early curfew for live music (10pm on weekends). This did allow us to catch a second show on the same night at the Commodore but means an early start to shows as well so maybe not what people without kids are looking for. Everyone I spoke to at Venue was quick to point out that the room wasn’t done yet. Apparently the furniture hasn’t arrived. There is a fantastic LED light board on the backwall of the stage which makes the band playing seem like they are bigger (as in more famous) then they really are. I’m sure bands are going to love it. On Friday we saw Cracker play. You might remember their radio hit Turn on, Tune in, Drop out. I recognized a few other songs. They sounded pretty good. The room has a bit of a hall sound to it but it’s early days and I’m sure they will work out the kinks.

We then headed across the road to The Commodore to see Xavier Rudd. I’ve seen Xavier once before at the Queen Elizabeth Theater about 18 months ago. He puts on an incredible show and did not disapoint. If you like Ben Harper, Paul Simon, Drums and Bass or are a music lover of any kind, I can’t imagine you not enjoying one of his shows. There is an amazing positive and happy energy at his shows and he is just so talented! He’s added a drummer and a basist to his band (he was a one man show before) and they are as talented as he is.

My husband used to run The Royal once upon a time. Back when they used to do live music he had Xavier Rudd play a few shows there. Once he played in the middle of the room on the floor for about 100 people. It was a spur of the moment show that I’m sure is still talked about by the lucky few who saw him. These days Xavier can sell out the Commodore three nights in a row.

We stopped and got hot dogs on the way home, just like the old days.

Last year Xavier Rudd completed his most ambitious and complex project to date and it had nothing to do with music.

In October, the singer-songwriter, his wife Marci and their two sons Joaquin, 8, and Finojet, 3, realised the great Australian dream of owning their own home. Of course, as you might expect from the seasoned social activist and environmental campaigner, this is no ordinary abode.

Not only is it situated on five acres of bushland ten minutes walk from his beloved Bells Beach, it’s also entirely environmentally sustainable and self-sufficient. For a family who’s always been nomadic – they once lived in a van when their eldest was younger – their custom-built piece of paradise has been a long time coming.

“We just wanted to have our own little sanctuary away from everything,” says Rudd. “We spend so much time on the road touring, dealing with different people and places, and just wanted a place we can come back and retreat and refuel.”

In between kids and tours and albums (Rudd released his eighth Dark Shades of Blue last year), the couple researched environmentally sustainable design for several years before stumbling across the website of Melbourne architect Ric Zen who’s been practising it since 1991. He explains: “With Xavier’s property, we worked holistically so everything from the natural bush to the creek to the windows was working together to make it as efficient as possible with no waste and ensure everything is used.”

With the help of a builder, Rudd and Marci, a painter by trade, started construction in early 2007 with a heavy focus on recycled materials. They used the wooden poles from the old Geelong pier for the house’s frame and second floor, and inherited a stockpile of wood from a friend who was a carver but sadly passed away.

”This guy had an old mobile mill and would go to old logging sites where they’d just knocked trees over and left them,” recalls Rudd. “From one Sugargum tree, we made the kitchen and bathroom benches and the stairs. I’ve got a huge piece left over, which I’m going to make into a dining table.”

The house also sports a deck big enough to sleep out on during hot summer nights and most impressively, a rock-climbing room built around a boulder. Outside, Rudd’s also rigged up a rope swing over the creek bed with a harness for the kids. ”They love this place,” he says with a boyish smile of his own. “They’re always outside and they never want to come inside.”

Of course, the house’s best feature is the most obvious – no bills. Rudd’s residence is completely off the grid, powered by a solar system with a back-up biodiesel generator. Rainwater is harvested in two 25,000 litre rainwater tanks and all waste water goes through to a worm farm which irrigates their vegetable garden.

Heating-wise, the house utilises a hydronic heating system – basically, a wood-fired boiler that heats water, which is then pumped through pipes in the floor and radiators in each room. That plus double glazed windows and walls insulated with straw bales and earth (a first for Zen’s company) means zero heating costs.

”It’s been fascinating because we’ve learnt so much building this house,” says Rudd, although he admits there’s still one thing missing – a studio. Hopefully, it’ll be finished in time to record album number nine later this year.

“I’ve been writing lots of new music and rehearsing with two South African guys named Tio Moloantoa and Andile Hornabrook,” he reveals. “They used to be the rhythm section for [reggae legend] Lucky Dube who died a couple of years ago. We met at a festival in Austria and they’re incredible. It’s kinda blowing my mind, actually.”
