What is the Best xBox 360 Mod Controller on the market at this moment? Ok….you can stop search

What is the Best xBox 360 Mod Controller on the market at this moment?

Ok….you can stop searching. I already did the research and have personal experience with this xBox 360 mod controller. You can also click the Mod Banner below to see the product details along with a quick Youtube video on how easy it is to install. I only have one complaint with this product (nothing major). They should include the screwdriver with this mod kit. This mod kit will require a Torx 8 Security Screwdriver which you can buy from Home Depot or any hardware store for about $1.99. I would gladly pay an extra $3-4 more and have it included and shipped to me (that’s just me….one lazy ass who doesn’t want to shop around looking for a damn screwdriver!!!).

Anyways, here is the company description of the product:

BGRmods saw a need in the gaming market. Console and accessory modification is a large part of the gaming world. The problem was that gamers buy mod kits for their controllers only to find out they were too complex to assemble themselves. So they partnered with an engineering team to get a product to the gamers that eliminates the technical curve, and offers more than the standard mod kit does.

The INTENSAFIRE modifies XBOX 360 controllers (CG, Matrix and wireless), allowing them to control 5-mode sleeper settings, and use customizable user programmable modes. It uses the existing Sync button to toggle and also offers and included button that advanced modifiers can use. It also enables dual rapid-fire- usable in all XBOX 360 games, including gamer favorites: Left 4 Dead, the Call of Duty series, the Halo series,
the Gears of War series, and Street Fighter.

5-mode sleeper mod kits exist. Dual rapid-fire mod kits exist. The INTENSAFIRE mod kit has both. There are controllers on the market, prefabricated, that do what the INTENSAFIRE offers, each controller going for well over $100. They offer a mod kit that is extremely simple to install, taking no more than 3 minutes with minimal tools for less than 1/4th the cost of the prefabricated units. Other mod kits require drilling, wiring, gluing, and deconstruction of your controllers. The INTENSAFIRE only needs a few existing points to solder to connect the INTENSAFIRE flex board to the controller and you’re ready to go!

Only $29.95……Go Buy it, Mod it and Shoot away…….(don’t forget to click the IntensaFire banner below and scroll down to see the Youtube video on how to install the mod onto your xBox 360 controller)….

Ever since I bought the Xbox 360 Wired Controller for the PC, I have been playing around with it in

Ever since I bought the Xbox 360 Wired Controller for the PC, I have been playing around with it in a variety of games (not always to satisfaction) and wanted to post some surprising thoughts from someone who is PC gaming through and through.

One of the main reasons I bought it in the first place was for Action-Adventure games and it has entirely replaced my KB/Mouse setup for such games. Ideally, these games are best played comfortably leaning back on your chair and taking in the atmosphere and I find the X360 controller perfect for that. I played Assassin’s Creed, Chaos Theory, Prototype, Arkham Asylum demo and quite a number of other games and had a blast in all of them. Though I had completed AC before with the KB/Mouse setup, the X360 controller made free-running just more of a joy to pull off. Same goes for moving Sam around in Chaos Theory (gave a few tries with KB/Mouse but the sheer number of key mappings in this game is overwhelming). And using the left analog stick instead of mouse-wheel to control Sam’s speed greatly adds to the tension when sneaking up on enemies which I absolutely love to do. I could go on adding to the list but you get the idea.

Then, I moved on to games (sports/racing) that are obviously suited to the controller. Again, another game that pushed me towards buying one is Burnout Paradise. I initially played it with a KB/Mouse but it just wasn’t fun to do those crashes in Road Rage/Marked Man and I stopped for a while. The 360 controller with the rumble made pulling off those insane crashes even more awesome and provided the adrenaline rush that the previous setup clearly lacked. I also played around with the Grid demo (having previously played it with KB/Mouse) and got the same feeling. When it comes to sports games, one thing I always find unintuitive about Fifa is the WASD key mapping for shooting/blocking/passing and I have never really gotten into them because of that. Playing the Fifa 09 demo (in anticipation of Fifa 10) opened my eyes on just how much the KB/Mouse lacks when it comes to this type of games.

Another reason in going for the gamepad was GTA-IV. I have played both Vice City and San Andreas and never had a problem with driving, but with this game, driving became really unsatisfying with the KB/Mouse. And GTA-IV is one of those games I mentioned earlier which is played best leaning back and taking in all the joys of Liberty City. After playing around for a while, I decided to use the controller for the shooting portions also. It became boring to put the pad down and move on to the KB/Mouse for shooting. Although shooting with the KB/Mouse is still better; the way availability of ammo/weapons in this game is worked out, it just made more sense to go for the comfort of the pad/auto-aim versus the KB/Mouse because shooting is nearly not as important as a standard FPS.

Finally, I moved on to the acid-test, that of playing a standard fast FPS with the controller and this is where I thought it failed for me personally. I tried out Escape from Butcher Bay with it and the initial portions were decent and the melee combat was actually more satisfying with a controller. But once I picked up a gun and got into some actual firefights the shortcomings of the analog stick/aiming became blatantly evident. I know this may just be because I am so used to the KB/Mouse setup and gave it some time. Sadly, I couldn’t do it as even on Easy difficulty, getting past the first proper firefight without getting reduced to one stick health (or worse, dying) was nearly impossible. Switching to the KB/Mouse setup, I realized how much better FPS still are with this setup. I am sure some people will disagree but, you know, I got past all the initial firefights (and this time on Hard) without breaking a sweat.

But this is still one of the best buys for me in a long time. Combined with a nifty little software called the Pinnacle Game Profiler, it makes playing even older games without 360 controller support a very simple process. Download one of the pre-defined game profiles (or better create one yourself) and you’re good to go on games like Splinter Cell, Pandora Tomorrow and even Oblivion. And all the newer Games for Windows titles come with built-in support for the Xbox 360 controller. Even though Microsoft’s driver software still sucks, it is amazing when you press a button on the pad, all on-screen instructions are delivered in that format and moving on the KB/Mouse immediately switches them over to that setup (this applies for all recent games like GTA-IV, Fallout 3, Prototype, Arkham Asylum etc.).

I still don’t think I will be able to play any kind of first-person shooter (including similar games like Mass Effect or Dragon Age) with the 360 gamepad and it is obviously unsuitable for strategy games, but I can safely say that it has taken over a large majority of my gaming time for pretty much all other types of games.

It looks like my controller is going to have to be put down soon (put down in the sick dog sense, not just set on the floor). For the last couple days, it has been intermittently turning off, forcing any game I’m playing to stop and give me the “Please reconnect controller” message. It wasn’t too bad at first, but now it happens every time I press certain button combos, specifically the left and right triggers, which in Gears 2 happens a lot.

I’m not sure if it’s the actual controller or just the battery pack, but I’m getting a new Play and Charge kit from Amazon (hopefully) today and I’ll find out. I’m going to be sad if I have to get rid of it though, because it’s spent more time in my hands than anything else I own…except one thing.

It’s amazing what [Ben Heckendorn] can manage to crank out in just five hours. This time it’s a wireless Xbox 360 controller stuffed inside an Atari 2600 controller. The guts are from a Guitar Hero 3 controller. It’s a fairly compact board and [Ben] used thin ATA wire for the connections. While it doesn’t have all the buttons of a true Xbox controller, this 3600 controller has enough to make it useful in arcade games. The joystick portion was reused without any modification. Things like the guide button and ring of light are located underneath.

It is modeled on what descriptions I could find on the net of a little Windows game called “In the pit,” by Studio Hunty. Now the program decodes the ogg files directly to memory, rather then to disk, saving quite a bit of disk space, but more importantly, now it supports the xbox 360 controller and the rumble effects work. When you start getting close to your prey, a very slight vibration begins, and the closer you get, the stronger the vibration. Works pretty well. (You need linux kernel 2.6.26 or better for the rumble effect to work though.)

I’ve added “rumble effect” to Word War vi, the little video game I’ve been working on. My code borrows heavily from Johann Deneux’s fftest.c program which is meant to test the force feedback capabilities of the linux input driver.

Here is my code:

rumble.h

rumble.c

If you want to try to use my code (whcih is GPL’ed), you’d include rumble.h, then call get_ready_to_rumble(NULL); (or pass the filename of your input device, if it isn’t /dev/input/event5). Then call play_rumble_effect(RUMBLE_STRONG_RUMBLE_EFFECT); or the like.

At the end of your program, call close_rumble_fd();

Very simple stuff, but I hope it’s of some help to someone.

This information is current as of Thu Jul 17 08:02:37 CDT 2008.

Edit: Correction: I believe I bought an xbox 360 controller.

Related post: programming joysticks with linux

Here is what I had to do to get my xbox 360 gamepad working with linux.

To start out with, I’m running Fedora core 8, with running kernel 2.6.25.10-47.fc8.

First, here’s what didn’t work:

I plugged the thing in, and saw the xpad driver load (saw it in output of dmesg.) Then, I ran the “jstest” program, and it printed out about 20 lines, then stopped, and no amount of fiddling with the buttons or joysticks on the game pad would make it produce any more output. Hmm.

I have the following kernel development packages installed, which means there are some headers and what not in /usr/src/kernels that allow modules to be compiled.

rpm -qa | grep kernel.devel produces:
kernel-devel-2.6.25.9-40.fc8
kernel-devel-2.6.25.10-47.fc8

So, I thought to build a new xpad.ko module from newer source:

After a bit of searching around on the internet, I tried the following:

mkdir xpad_driver
cd xpad_driver
wget http://xbox-linux.cvs.sourceforge.net/*checkout*/xbox-linux/kernel-2.6/drivers/usb/input/xpad.c
wget http://xbox-linux.cvs.sourceforge.net/*checkout*/xbox-linux/kernel-2.6/drivers/usb/input/xpad.h

Create a Makefile with this in it:

obj-m := xpad.o

then:

make -C /usr/src/kernels/2.6.25.10-47.fc8-i686 M=`pwd` modules

Well, it didn’t build.

So then, I downloaded the 2.6.26 kernel from kernel.org, and unpacked it and copied xpad.c and xpad.h from drivers/input/joystick, and tried the make command again:

make -C /usr/src/kernels/2.6.25.10-47.fc8-i686 M=`pwd` modules

this makes xpad.ko

then, as root:

rmmod xpad.ko

(at this point, unplug the joystick)

insmod ./xpad.ko

(at this point plug in the joystick.)

This worked. Yay!

But, now to try force feedback. I got the fftest program. (google for fftest.c, and compile it with “gcc -o fftest fftest.c”)

Then run it as “fftest /dev/input/event0″

No dice. “i/o error.”

Great. Ok, try copying evdev.h and evdev.c from kernel.org’s 2.6.26 tree (from drivers/input/joystick again) and add “evdev”a into the makefile, like:

cat Makefile
obj-m := xpad.o evdev.o

Then run the make again:

make -C /usr/src/kernels/2.6.25.10-47.fc8-i686 M=`pwd` modules

Now that produces evdev.ko.

Try to insmod it, but it won’t. Turns out Fedora has the “input” driver statically linked in, so you can’t rmmod it. (Found out by looking at /dev/input/event0, and noticing it had character device major number 13, and then looking in /proc/devices, see that this corresponds to “input”. Try rmmod input, but no luck, it’s statically linked.

Bummer. I guess Fedora core 8 (with their very most recent kernel as of this writing) just really doesn’t have xbox 360 support then. (Edit: this may not be true, see below.)

(Here begins the part where things began working.)

That means time to compile that 2.6.26 kernel.org kernel and see if that works. Copied the .config file from /usr/src/kernels/2.6.25.10-47.fc8-i686/.config and then ran

“make oldconfig”, hitting enter a whole bunch for defaults to new config options, then ran “make menuconfig” and turned off a bunch of hardware I don’t have, then ran “make.” Went shopping (not kidding). The compile takes awhile with redhat’s config file, even considering that I turned off a bunch of stuff.

then (as root) “make modules_install”, and “make install”, then reboot into the new kernel.

Hmm, it still doesn’t seem to work.

At this point, I was stuck for awhile, but then I began running fftest against the various event device nodes…

[root@zuul xpad_driver]# ./fftest /dev/input/event0
Force feedback test program.
HOLD FIRMLY YOUR WHEEL OR JOYSTICK TO PREVENT DAMAGES

Device /dev/input/event0 opened
Axes query:

Upload effects[2]: Function not implemented
Upload effects[3]: Function not implemented
Upload effects[4]: Function not implemented
Upload effects[5]: Function not implemented

No dice. Same thing with event1, event2, event3, event4 but then… hello, what’s this?

root@zuul xpad_driver]# ./fftest /dev/input/event5
Force feedback test program.
HOLD FIRMLY YOUR WHEEL OR JOYSTICK TO PREVENT DAMAGES

Device /dev/input/event5 opened
Axes query:
Effects: Periodic Rumble
Number of simultaneous effects: 16
Upload effects[1]: Invalid argument
Upload effects[2]: Invalid argument
Upload effects[3]: Invalid argument
Enter effect number, -1 to exit

That’s different… hmm, it didn’t complain about 0, or, 4, or 5…

Enter effect number, -1 to exit
0
Now Playing: Sine vibration
Enter effect number, -1 to exit
4
Now Playing: Strong Rumble
Enter effect number, -1 to exit
5
Now Playing: Weak Rumble
Enter effect number, -1 to exit
-1
No such effect
[root@zuul xpad_driver]#

Hey hey! It works!

Well, option 0, “Sine vibration” didn’t ever stop, just kept going indefinitely (even exiting the program doesn’t stop it.) But, playing 4, or 5 it rumbles for awhile then stop. 4 seems to be the same as 0, except it stops, and 5 seems to be a higher frequency, lower amplitude version of 4.

On inspecting the fftest code, it seems that it plays effects 4 and 5 for 5 seconds, but the others for 20 seconds for some reason. 20 seconds is a long time. Knowing this, and waiting 20 secs, effect 0 does indeed eventually stop. So… it looks like it’s working. And, knowing that it’s (for some reason) showing up at /dev/input/event5, rather than /dev/input/event0. Hmm, it suddenly occurs to me that maybe event0-4 are the mouse. Maybe that’s mousex, mousey, plus 3 buttons mapped to 0,1,2,3,4… that’d make sense.)

That it showed up on /dev/input/event5 means it’s quite possible that this might actually work with Fedora’s kernel, (well, apart from the xpad driver itself.)

I’ll have to try that… but for now, heck I’ll just stick with this 2.6.26 kernel. There’s nothing like the bleeding edge.

Is everyone checking out the E3 coverage this week? I haven’t watched much on t.v., but here are the few things that i’m loving so far:

Xbox 360 avatars

New controller colors

The success of Xbox Live

LEGO Batman

I really want to be excited about Halo Wars, but i’m not much of a strategic games kinda gal. I want to be down there killing the Covenant myself, not directing the little guys to do it for me.

Perhaps the thing i’m MOST excited about, is this article. More than HALF of Canadian parents play video games with their kids? SWEET!

There are some mods out there that are truly stupid and then there are some that are simply amazing.

There are some mods out there that are truly stupid and then there are some that are simply amazing. The modder known as F00 f00 has made what could possibly be the best first person shooter controller available.

Taking what he had available, a Xbox 360 controller, and breaking it down and relocating the buttons for maximum comfort and utility is pretty damn awesome. With time and practice I could see this controller being way better then what we currently have.

The 360 controller is probably one of the best ‘feeling’ and ‘operating’ wireless controllers out there. It works great in almost every situation when it come to first person games. The only lacking thing about the current 360 controller is the idea that you have to remove your right thumb to hit the face buttons on the controller. (A, B, X, and Y) This mod makes it so you never have to relocate your thumb, its always plugged right on the analog stick, where it belongs.

I know something like this will never hit retail shelves, but I wish it would. If a company took this idea and ran with it, made a ‘perfect’ first person shooter controller and marketed it for the public, I’m sure it would sell just fine, especially for the demographic of the 360 audience. The only major problem for something like this is two fold; first the controller needs to be cheaper (or the same price) then the standard 360 controller. No one will fork out another $50 dollars for another controller if theirs does the ‘trick’ just fine. Secondly, you would need the support of multiple publishers to back the controller, make it a viable option for your gaming needs. With no ‘real’ support from the games, the controller will just end up in the heap of crap we know as useless accessories.

Just food for thought, I found this mod to be quite interesting and I would love to see something like this hit store shelves.

I dug up one of my older games yesterday: Prince of Persia: Two thrones. I had abandoned it a few days after I bought it last year because it was a pain to play using the keyboard… and I didn’t want to buy a game controller just for one game.

But today I thought, what the heck, maybe it would help me play my other games better. So I went out and bought an Xbox 360 controller. I was initially bent on buying the wireless version. But to cut a long story short I couldn’t find one compatible with the PC. And the regular (wired) one was guaranteed to work seamlessly on both the Xbox and the PC.

The Xbox 360 Controller plugs into your USB port. You will have to first install the controller software available at http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/gaming/download.mspx. The documentation that came with the controller said the software was available at www.windowsgaming.com but I could never get that site to open. I wonder if it even exists.

So I installed the software, plugged in the controller and I was all set to go. Configuring the controller in POP was pretty straightforward. It detected all the buttons on the controller except for the RT and LT buttons. Probably I can use the XBCD drivers to get them to work.

The controller comes with two analog sticks, one D-Pad, 4 standard buttons (X,Y,A,B), two shoulder buttons (LB, RB) and two trigger buttons (LT, RT). In addition to this there is the guide button (the big X button on the top) and a back and start button. The guide button is pretty useless on a PC. It just brings a small window where you can launch the help documentation. The guide button is surrounded by a green light strip which is divided into 4 quadrants called the ring of light (like on the Xbox system). You can hookup up to 4 controllers to a system and a different quadrant will light up for each controller.

And boy, does this controller rock or what. The analog sticks are so precise and sensitive to the slightest touch. In POP, pushing the analog stick softly makes the prince walk slowly and if you push on it a bit further, he starts running. On the keyboard you would have to first press the walk toggle key and then use the direction keys. I had to say, WOW (Microsoft would have loved that). You really have to play the game to experience it.

On supported games (such as POP) the controller provides vibration feedback for certain actions. For example, in POP, when you hit an enemy or land after a jump, the controller vibrates to acknowledge this. Pretty cool! The controller is ergonomic and fits comfortably into your hand. All the buttons are easily reachable and you don’t have to stretch your fingers for any of them. And to top it all off, the controller is unbelievably light for its size.

The controller also supports connecting a Xbox 360 head set or a 2.5 mm headset to it. Haven’t tested it though.

I bought it at Rs. 2150. I was thinking of getting it from PlayAsia, but the delivery takes over three weeks. I am still waiting for my Lost planet CD that I ordered on the 12th. Now that would be a cool game to play with my new controller. Fingers crossed. Hope it come soon.

Conclusions:

The Xbox 360 controller is a tad expensive but if you are a passionate gamer you really wouldn’t mind spending that kind of moolah for this amazing piece of hardware. Probably the best gaming controller for the PC. Period.

The wireless version of this provides exactly the same features except that it is, well, wireless. It comes with a rechargeable battery pack or you can pop in a couple of AA batteries. The charger for the battery pack has to be bought separately though. And its slightly more heavier that the wired one because of the battery. So the TCO for the wireless controller is pretty high because either you’ll have to buy the charger for the rechargeable battery (thats another 1200 odd rupees) or keep buying AA batteries. Take your pick.

Personally, I am glad I stuck to the wired one. The wire is a small price to pay.

PS: I looked up windowsgaming.com in the WHOIS database and the site is indeed registered to Microsoft. I strongly suspect the site was replaced by www.gamesforwindows.com. The download link at gamesforwindows points the link I mentioned earlier
