We all love a bargain, and we are certainly getting one here. Microsoft Australia are officially knocking $AU100 off the normal RRP of the Elite 360.  Now that makes the 120 gig equipped item well worth the buy, never mind the free game.

Free Halo: ODST and $100 off! Bargain!

From 22nd September the Elite will be RRP $491 and will come with a free copy of Halo 3: ODST until October 20, 2009.

With the Elite’s extra storage, it would make it much more viable in today’s world of DLC and movies-playback. I suspect that the Arcade my end up with the 60gig HDD, and the current Xbox 360 Pro might see its retirement. This will then be followed by the new ‘Xbox 720′ which will sport the unified GPU/CPU motherboard called Valhalla touted to be installed in new machines late in 2009/ early 2010.

This would fall in line with the new Natal equipment that will no doubt be a pre-installed function in new forthcoming machines (Xbox720) but also as a stand-alone item for all those with pre-existing Xbox 360s.

Anyhow, we have a great holiday season ahead, with Halo ODST, Forza 3, and several other 3rd party games heading our way. Anyone that says there’s not enough games available (on any platform) is just plain greedy and, frankly, blind.

Hold off on buying that new Xbox 360.

Leaked copies of next weeks Target ad show the Xbox 360 Pro will drop to $250, while the Elite will be sold for a sweet $300 (Engadget).

For me, nothing. I already have a PS3 and while the slim does look nice I’m not going to fork out for a new one (even after trading my current PS3 I’d still have to pay around $200AUD). No for me it just interesting to watch what happens. It is no secret that Sony are not faring as well as Microsoft and Nintendo this generation, but all the competition seems to be between the green beast that is the 360 and Sony’s big black box because the Wii doesn’t seem to garner the attention of the ‘hardcore’ gaming crowd.

So how will the new price and SKU affect you? $499 is a nice price for a Blu-Ray player that plays games (which is what the PS3 is too me) and it with Christmas fast approaching it seems like Sony have re-discovered how to market effectively.

And on the Xbox side of things, it looks more and more likely that Microsoft are going to drop the 60GB Pro SKU and just have the Arcade and Elite models. But will they drop the price of the Elite and make that the new ‘premium’ console, or add a HDD to the arcade and up that price a little? Too me it doesn’t make much sense to drop the Pro. It’s the best selling of the three consoles and the continual chopping and changing of the 360 lineup is confusing to customers that are not as well versed in gaming as we are.

Just an interesting little situation to watch, and working in a games store I’ll be able to see first hand how the developments actually play out.

A tipster just sent in pictures of the all-new Xbox 360 Elite model that is showing up at video game retailers around the country, as early as today. The similar color to Pro models pushes us to wonder if the going-extinct rumors were true. Microsoft is not commenting on the hardware rumors at this time but stay tuned right here to PlanetXbox360.com for more information as it comes to fruition. Along with the new pictures was a statement from the retail store employee that they have not received any new “Pro” model Xbox 360’s in the past couple weeks and these new “Elite” boxes were the first hardware that arrived in some time. It seems unfathomable that Microsoft would keep two different models on the store shelves with exactly the same color boxing (Elite=Black – Pro=White – Arcade=Green). The images we received are below and the only difference we can tell is that this Elite model does not include a HDMI cable:

Xbox 360 Pro

There has been talk and rumors about this recently, about the Xbox 360 Pro being phased out and removed from shelves. The rumor first started back in June, and implies that the Xbox 360 Elite will recieve a price drop, and the xbox 360 Pro will be removed completely. This was brought up by Ars Technica’s source, and it seems to be confirmed.

In an image presented on Kotaku today, the Xbox 360 Elite console will be recieving a price cut to have a price comparable to that of the Xbox 360 Pro. It will be featured at $299, and will be hitting shelves soon. Some questioned if the Arcade model will be recieving a price cut as well, and my answer to that is, why would that be necessary? The Arcade model is cheap enough already, heh.

So to restate what happened, Microsoft is officially removing the Xbox 360 Pro model, and will be cutting the Xbox 360 Elite price to $299.99 to compensate for the loss. This is also even reflected on the boxing of the Xbox 360 Arcade model, as it used to compare all three models, but now it only compares the two, Elite and Arcade. So if you’re a new or potential Xbox 360 buyer, your choices now are the cheap model without a hard drive, or the more expensive 120 gb hard drive version. This change will take place soon.

When Microsoft was asked regarding the proof/reliability of this rumor, they said that they do not comment on speculation. So if they are going to announce it, it will probably be done next week. Microsoft seems to be doing good with price cuts, that’s pretty good. Now only if Sony would stop being stingy with the Playstation 3, and they’d actually consider doing a price drop as well…

Consumidores de todo mundo viram as novas caixas do Xbox 360 Arcade, está semana. Nas especificações de cada modelo do console, notaram a falta do conhecido Xbox 360 Pro, que pra quem não sabe é o preferido dos brasileiros.

A ausência do Xbox 360 Pro da caixa e os rumores na queda de preço do Elite para US$299 nos levam a acreditar no site Ars Technica, que divulgou em junho deste ano a notícia do fim do modelo Pro.

Se isso é verdade ou não verdade eu não sei, só sei que lógica ao menos tem. E se for verdade isso não será muito bom para os brasileiros, fã do Xbox 360 Pro. Eu sinseramente quero que não seja verdade.

The rumor mill is still churning with talks of the long elusive Playstation 3 price-cut but Sony still holds firm to their long used standby that it’s not going to happen. However, ARS Technica has reports from an undisclosed source saying both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will drop their price by late summer or early fall.

ARS Technica’s informant also says that the both companies will have new hardware developments for this year’s holiday season. Sony is expected to debut, along with their price drop, the long rumored PS3 slim. This is after Sony sent a round of letters asking various websites to pull the photos of the slim system’s box and then commenting that there were no plans to develop and sell a redesigned PS3.

On the other side of the playground, Microsoft will reportedly drop the xbox 360 pro consoles by midsummer and replace it with the elite console which will have a price drop by early September. The elites are currently bundled with Halo 3 and Fable 2 but will be replaced with other games by October for the holiday season.

With the economy still in a slump it’s plausible that both companies would drop the price as we move towards the holiday season to boost their sales. Sony, especially, has room for improvement since they were expected to make an announcement at this year’s E3 about a PS3 price drop.

There’s a rumor circulating that the Xbox 360 Arcade and the Xbox 360 Pro will receive storage upgrades in the near future. According to VGE Utopia, the Arcade will either get a bump to 512MB of internal memory or a 20GB hard drive. The Pro hard drive will get an upgrade to 80GB or 120GB.

If the reports of the Elite becoming limited are true, then the rumors make a lot of sense. I truly hope that the Arcade gets the hard drive, because its current incarnation is too limited. The Pro hitting at least 80GB also seems like a prudent move; this would keep its storage in line with Sony’s base model and cause some consumers to see it as a better value than the 80GB PlayStation 3.

The storage upgrades were expected some time this year, simply because cost per GB constantly goes down and Microsoft has to refresh its SKUs. However, the purported demise of the Elite accelerates matters, particularly for the Pro. If Microsoft is going to push the Pro as its main SKU, then it needs to match the 80GB PlayStation 3 as closely as possible while still retaining a cheaper price. Regardless of what you think of their respective capabilities, mainstream consumers will focus on the price difference, believing that, “These two game boxes both have 80GB hard drives. This white one is $100 cheaper. I’ll get that!”

For anyone that hasn’t purchased an Xbox 360 yet, are you going to delay your purchase based on these rumors? For everyone else, do you think these upgrades are likely? Do you even think they’re necessary?

New Xbox 360 Dashboard

New Halo 3 info not enough for you and your Xbox? Well this should be enough. The Xbox website says that on November 19, the new dashboard update will be available. A recap on some of the things the update brings:

• Slick 3D “flip” menu interface
• Load games off of your hard drives instead of the disc (this is faster and brings no more worries of scratched discs!)
• Avatars (like Mii’s on the Wii) for Xbox Live Arcade games

This is a nice little update and will be both mandatory and free (you will need to download it, but you will also need to have at least 256 MB free for it to download) when it comes out next month.

We also have news for those perspective buyers out there who didn’t buy an Xbox 360 last week when Dell was giving those $50 off coupons (we wrote about it here). From now till who knows when, all versions of Xbox 360 (yes all: Arcade, Pro and Elite) will be bundled with full games in the box…free! The Pro and Elite with the Kung Fu Panda and Lego Indiana Jones and the Arcade (already including the regular 5 Xbox Live Arcade games like Pac-Man and Uno!) with a full copy of Sega Superstar Tennis. There are no changes in the overall price of the system, so think of this as an early holiday present to you from Microsoft

Remember a couple weeks ago we wrote about a price cut rumor for the Xbox 360? Today, according to this Radio Shack flier on the web (see later), those price cuts were spot on. Just a recap on what those price cuts would mean:

1. Xbox 360 Elite for $399 (down from $450). The top bundle, including:

• 120 GB hard drive
• black casing with black wireless controller
• HDMI cable–only one cable connected to the TV need for full HD quality

2. Xbox 360 Pro for $299 (down from $349). The middle bundle, including:

• 60 GB Hard Drive
• white casing with white wireless controller
• HD component cable– several cables need to be plugged in for both audio and video and quality is slightly lower than with the HDMI cable–with a slot for an HDMI cable which must be purchased separately

3. Xbox 360 Arcade for $199 (down from $279). The basic bundle, including:

• 256 MB memory card- no Hard Drive- with
• 5 Xbox Live Arcade games preloaded
• White casing with white wired controller
• Regular TV cable–regular quality without HD from either a HD component or HDMI cable like the other two but includes a slot for the HDMI cable on the system

These price cuts are expected on September 7, so we recommend holding off that 360 purchase for just a bit longer.

We’ll follow this and of course keep you updated, but overall, the Xbox 360 is looking more and more affordable– the Arcade version is now cheaper than the Wii, not to mention the fact that the former can actually be found in stores — and is looking like an even better option for next gen gaming.
