As is the way with music journalism, 2009 isn’t over yet and publications are already predicting the albums that will be topping end of year polls in 2010. As album info for the first quarter of next year starts to come thick and fast, and the rumour mill speculating albums that might or might not get released next year, the time has come for me to chuck in my two cents. After you’ve finished admiring my MS Paint skills (seriously, who needs InDesign?), scroll down to find out the albums I’m tipping for success in 2010.

Xiu Xiu – Dear God, I Hate Myself

This one’s particuarly exciting because it has an album cover, tracklist and a release date. Xiu Xiu’s latest opus, Dear God, I Hate Myself, will be released on February 15th through Kill Rock Stars, and is likely to be the sound coming out of my bedroom for much of the year. As Drowned In Sound revealed last week, Stewart will be joined by new full-time band member Angelo Seo, a guest appearance from a catholic choir, and the title track is composed on a Nintendo DS. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, the record will also feature Deerhoof’s John Deitrich and Greg Saunier, who also co-produces the record with Stewart. Plus, that title, is so Xiu Xiu it hurts.

Rolo Tomassi – tbc

I haven’t talked about Rolo Tomassi’s new album yet on this blog, but it’s something I’ve been excited about for a very long time. For those unaware of the big news, they’ll be working with M.I.A and Santigold producer Diplo on the new record, which throws up all kinds of great possibilities. For me, Hysterics, hinted at the fantastic studio potential the band have, and with Diplo on board I’m sure Rolo Tomassi are going to produce one of the biggest sounding albums of the year. Four Tet – There Is Love In You

Having already blogged about Four Tet’s latest single, Love Cry, which can be heard here, the album is set to drop on 25th January. It’s the first studio album Kieran Hebden has released under the name Four Tet for nearly five years, and it’ll be interesting to see how There Is Love In You slots into an electronic scene which has changed dramatically in that time. Four Tet has already put his mark on a plethora of electronic styles, and there’s little doubt this will be one of the genre’s leading releases next year.

Random Axe – Random Axe

This long-awaited collaboration between Black Milk, Guilty Simpson and Sean Price should really be out by now, but after a catastrophic loss of material the trio have had to head back to the studio and re-record a lot of material. The record is being entirely produced by Black Milk, who fully established himself as one of hip hop’s hottest producers in 2008; releasing one of the albums of the decade in Tronic, as well as his equally brilliant beats all over Elzhi’s The Preface. If that wasn’t enough, Black Milk’s twitter feed suggest that he’s currently in the studio working on the follow up to Tronic, and Guilty Simpson’s entirely Madlib produced record, O.J Simpson, looks likely to be put back to 2010 as well. Whatever way you look at it, these guys are going to dominate hip hop in 2010.

Liars – Sisterworld

The cryptic clues that reveal what the new Liars album, Sisterworld, will sound like have already begun. Things that we do know about their 5th album are that it was recorded in LA, and will be released through mute some time early in 2010. Well, that’s not strictly true, there is also a website for Sisterworld, which is about as useless as a website could possibly be, and they have also recorded a video for Drowned in Sound which reveals a little more, and makes the album sound very exciting. Early signs suggest that this album is going to haunt you in your sleep.

Surfer Blood – Astro Coast

Here’s a band that is likely to do very well next year, off the back of their current support slot with Japandroids and playing a whopping 12 times at CMJ. Having heard the album in its entirety I can already tell you its a winner, mixing authentic surf-pop hooks with a Wipers-esque punk edge. If that doesn’t convince you, check out album highlight Swim over here, surely a dead cert to be one of the “anthems” of 2010. I mean that in a good way.

The National – tbc

For me, The National have been one of the bands of the decade, so it should come as no surprise that the prospect of their new album comes with a great deal of excitement. As reported in Stereogum’s list of most anticipated releases, singer Matt Beringer explains how the band initially set out to make a ‘fun’ pop record and had the word ‘happiness’ taped to the studio wall; a plan that soon went off course. I really can’t imagine The National making happy record, because, to be honest,  miserable is what they do best. I’m pretty sure this will sound like The National’s other records, which is certainly no bad thing, and I’m sure it’ll be up there with the year’s very best albums.

LCD Soundsystem – tbc

Whether it’s with LCD Soundsystem, or through his label DFA Records, James Murphy has been involved with a lot of cool records. Since LCD’s early days they have always written great songs, but with Sound of Silver in 2007 they proved they could be an albums band too. Recorded in LA, the album is seemingly mostly done, as Murphy continues to add his finishing touches in the studio. In an interview with Drowned in Sound, Murphy talks about having to re-think the dance floor a little, which I think is an encouraging sign, suggesting that LCD Soundsystem will continue to lead the way in this field.

Battles – tbc

I’m speculating on this one a little, but Battles have already been previewing some new material on tour this year so the chances are we’ll see a new album soon. If anyone is interested in dodgy live videos on youtube, then you can check out the band playing some new songs here. Mirrored was undoubtedly one of the most fun, innovative and all round spectacular albums of this decade so, if they stay together, there’s no limit to what they could produce in the next one.

Madvillain – tbc

If I was speculating about the new Battles album, then this one might just be plain wishful thinking. Over the last few years a follow up to Malib and MF Doom’s, Madvillainy, has joined Dre’s Detox as hip hop’s Chinese Democracy. The good news folks, is that Chinese Democracy came out this year, so there’s still hope yet. It seems like even Madlib is sick of waiting for this to come together, having released a complete remix of the pair’s original collaboration in 2008. Recent reports, though, have suggested that this is finally being worked on, and will once again be entirely produced by Madlib and eventually released through Stones Throw.

I’m a sucker for Bjork covers almost as much as I am for the Icelandic pixie herself. Don’t tell anyone, but I took pictures in front of her house when I was vacationing in Reykjavic. I know that sounds creepy, but spend a few days there and you’ll realize everyone’s pretty chill — even the stalkers. But I digress.

Stereogum has put together a tribute album for Post, Bjork’s second album and probably what many would consider her break out LP. Featuring a track-by-track cover from artists such as the Dirty Projectors, The High Places, Atlas Sound and more, the results are thoroughly enjoyable and most importantly, free to download.

Granted, I’m not a musician, but I would imagine putting your name on a cover slated for a Bjork tribute album can be rather intimidating. How do you make something seminal because it was so idiosyncratic sound unique in your own way? Daunting task aside, Stereogum assembled some intrepid troubadours who basically went the only two ways covers can go — make it indecipherably different, or just play it bar-for-bar in your own style.

Sometimes these two options are not mutually exclusive (like Xiu Xiu’s caustically breathy Isobel rendition). By and large though I am a fan of the “being yourself” route. My favourite — and probably least wild — track on the album is the version of Possibly Maybe performed as a duet by Final Fantasy (Toronto native Owen Pallet) and Ed Drost of Grizzly Bear.

Pallet and Drost impart a reverential vibe essential to all good covers, plus the male duet brings something special to a quivering melody so associated with Bjork’s distinctive voice.

In general, this is a thoroughly enjoyable project and Stereogum does a great job interviewing all the artists about why they love Bjork, chats with Bjork herself and even includes album liner notes and special cover art.

Worth checking out, and you can download all the mp3’s in a zip file.

I wasn’t crazy about the Love is Hell cover art, but seriously? They couldn’t come up with anything better than the exaggerated, over-used semi-cursive type face?

you know once i’m onto swedish pop i really can’t stop, especially when there’re singles aplenty to dust off and share. this time, i have a track from the sweet seranades, something that’s been lying around in my collection for almost a year, but which sounds just as good as when i first heard it. “mona lee” introduces the self-pronounced “woodsmen of indiepop” (just look at the promo shot) with a chopping drum beat that clears the way for an intro that could really go anywhere. while i’m tempted to fit in the opening lines of “lisztomania”, what i get instead is a fervent introduction to our lead character by a narrator already sweating (and singing) like xiu xiu’s jamie stewart, dramatic and always peaking. by the chorus, we’re all swept away by the hurricane she brings with her, holding on so desperately amidst the howling voices, and not knowing why we celebrate with such rapturous joy the fleeting passage of a lady we can’t even get close to. perhaps the xiu xiu comparison is apt after all, but with all the sexual frustration of grown men crying subverted by a perversely delirious pop tune. - dan.

To celebrate LGBT Pride month music-blogger quietcore recently blogged an interesting collection of cover songs by LGBT artists. These blowin’ your cover-posts features music by gay(-friendly) artists inlcuding many of our community’s favorites.

Queer classics like “I will survive” (in a pretty laid-back version by Jill Sobule), “a little respect” (by wheatus and through all the electric guitars still as catchy as the original) or “do you really want to hurt me?” (this time by violent femmes) are no surprises in this context. While songs like “you don’t own me”, “my love” and “are u that somebody” provide more of my beloved SUBTEXT-flavour.

I had no idea this was in the pipeline, so imagine my surprise when I see two of my all-time favorite bands are releasing a split 7″ of Smiths / Morrissey covers. Available to pre-order now from Upset The Rhythm, the split single sees Xiu Xiu perform a typically minimalist rendition of Morrissey’s, I Am Hated For Loving, while Parenthetical Girls get surprisingly rocky on their version of The Smiths’, Handomse Devil.

Both bands have been quite vocal in the past about their love for all things Morrissey, so it’s great to see them get together and produce this fantastic split single. Check out the Parenthetical Girls half of the single below, and then be sure to order a copy of the 7″ before they all go. Nice collector’s item to have, this one.

Parenthetical Girls – Handsome Devil

A circa un mese e mezzo dalla pubblicazione ecco qualche nota su uno degli album tributi prodotti, pubblicati e diffusi gratuitamente da Stereogum (il blog di culto per i patiti della musica indie). Si tratta di Enjoyed: A Tribute To Björk’s Post, ovvero 46 minuti in cui si ripercorre la sequenza originale del secondo album di Björk, Post, (gran) disco del 1995. Ogni traccia è affidata a un artista differente e l’apertura, Army Of Me, tocca al nome forte tra le band coinvolte, i Liars: sporcato e rallentato (anche se non al livello delle cover più radicali sentite negli ultimi tempi, ossia quelle di Kode9 and The Spaceape, vedi Sign O’ The Times e Ghost Town) il brano, scelto all’epoca dall’artista islandese come primo singolo, così arrangiato sembra una colonna sonora ideale per scene apocalittiche di film ambientati in un prossimo futuro. Ma già il brano successivo cambia completamente atmosfera: la versione di Hyperballad firmata Dirty Projectors (l’indie band più chiacchierata dell’anno) è David Byrne oriented; qualche passo oltre l’indie-pop si ritrova subito la pace, insomma. Saltando qualche brano però arriviamo al vero pezzo forte: gli Xiu Xiu tirano fuori una versione di Isobel in chiave contemporanea che rende onore al concetto di cover, con al centro un violoncello rieditato e una voce spaesata che gli gira intorno. Ultima menzione per Headphones rifatta da Atlas Sound: tanto fosca quanto ammaliante.
Gli altri artisti coinvolti, sfruttando la bellezza dei brani originari, che non è poca, danno comunque il loro contributo. Ma per saperne di più (e scaricare il disco) cliccate qui.

Daha önce Lykke Li ve El Perro Del Mar’ın San Francisco sokaklarındaki performansını müzik defterine koymuştum. Ama blogotheque ekibini çok da araştırmamıştım. Ama bugün sitelerinde girdiğimde ve birkaç röportajlarını okuduğumda aslında ne kadar mükemmel bir proje olduğunu fark ettim..

Paris’te yaşayan bu guerilla ekip, müzik ve filmi sokaklarda, değişik mekanlarda bir araya getiriyorlar. Take Away Shows adı altında çektikleri bu canlı performansların özelliği farklı mekanlarda, spontane olmaları. Seçtikleri isimler de, çektikleri mekanlar da çok etkileyici! Bir asansörün içinde Arcade Fire, bir gitar dükkanının içinde Eric Truffaz, Teksas sokaklarında bir kamyonetin arkasında Jose Gonzales, nehrin ortasında bir teknede French Cowboys, kocaman bir mutfakta Efterklang, hareket halindeki bir minibüsün içinde Vampire Weekend, tuvalette Grizzly Bear veya süpermarkette Bowerbirds performansı izlemeyi kim istemez?

Fikir ortaya şöyle çıkmış.. Proje sahipleri Moon ve Chryde, Arcade Fire’ın Paris’teki konserinde sahneden inip herkesle birlikte sokağa çıkmasından ve performansını sokakta sergilemesinden çok etkilenmişler. “Aslında hepimizin müzikten istediği bu” diye düşünüp, Blogotheque’i, 2006 yılında kurmuşlar. 

“La blogotheque presente un concert a emporter” ibaresiyle açılıyor tüm video’lar. Ve her videonun çekim hikayesini okuyabiliyorsunuz site üzerinden..

Vampire Weekend - Otoparkta Kids Don’t Stand A Chance performansı veya hareket halindeki bir minibüsün içinde Mansard Roof seslendirişler çok keyifli.

Beirut - Paris sokaklarında kalabalık orkestrasıyla kur dolu performansı çok güzel.

Arcade Fire - Bir asansörün içinde Neon Bible seslendiriyor. Mutlaka izlenmeli.

Efterklang - Grafitilerle dolu duvarların arasında, merdivenlerde Mirador performansı veya Bottom of the Hill mutfağında Echo Wave performansı çok güzel.

Lykke Li ve El Perro Del Mar - San Francisco sokaklarında After Laughter, Dance Dance Dance ve Somebodys Baby düetlerini yapıyorlar.

Grizzly Bear – Küçücük bir tuvalette Shift’i seslendiriyor veya Paris sokaklarında yürüyen bir a capella korosu olarak The Knife’ı söylüyorlar.

Tom Jones – Otel odasında We Got Love, If We Should Ever Leave You, Green Green Grass of Home parçalarını seslendiriyor.

Bloc Party – Bar kapısının önünde This Modern Love’ın akustik performansını sergiliyor.

Stephen Malkmus - Kapanmış bir barın içinde, ters çevrilmiş sandalyelerin arasında We Can’t Help You seslendiriyor.

St Vincent – Çatı katı bir odada yatağın içerisinde Marry Me parçasını seslendiriyor.

Xiu Xiu – şişeler, kutular ve bilimum aparatlarla değişik bir Improvisation performansı gerçekleştiriyor.

I highly suggest getting into all of their music. It’s definitely not for everyone, but for those who it is for, it will blow your mind!

Former Ghosts is the new band from Freddy Rupert, who had a project called This Song is a Mess but So Am I, with help from Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu and Zola Jesus. The song is going to draw lots and lot of comparisons to Joy Division, but it’s more than that. Upset the Rhythm, the label releasing their debut album Fleurs, said that the album is “dense, not just with sound but emotion – an album so heavy, that the disk itself almost seems to weigh five pounds.” You can really hear it in these tracks. It’s going to be a good album for winter.
