Nancy and I spent a cool but calm weekend at the lake. (Our dog, Daisy, a Lhasa apso we keep cut short, also came along.) The leaves are starting to change colors and Ouachita is up to its upper banks. No TV, no Internet. Beautiful.

It was almost a blast from the past — we listened to the Arkansas-Florida football game Saturday afternoon on the radio, via a sports station at 96.3 FM out of Fort Smith, then switched to the American League Championship Series between the Angels and the Yankees on XM Satellite Radio. We worked in a DVD of “Friday Night Lights,” the movie, in between.

It was nice. We didn’t get involved in the “blame the referees” stuff about the Razorbacks game because we couldn’t see if they were bad calls or not. The radio announcers (Chuck Barrett and Keith Jackson) said there were some bad calls, but both of those guys DO work for the University of Arkansas, so what do you expect?

I know that the Razorbacks were much-improved over previous games this year, yet they had three chances to score from inside the Gators 40-yard line in the third quarter and managed only three points. So, yes, we scared the top-ranked Gators, but we had chances to win and didn’t — we lost 23-20. That’s it. Whine all you want, but if you want to be Hog-crazy, worry about the Ole Miss game.

The rest of us will get on with our lives or continue to watch the baseball playoffs — football doesn’t really start until the World Series is over. That’s what matters to me, after my family.

Meanwhile, it’s back to work in the midst of some wonderful fall weather.

Since we get Free radio as it is, I opted not to renew. This week I got a card with a special promotion for 6 months at $4.99 per month. I can do that Plus we have a few trips coming up over the next couple of months and its nice to have lots of music options, news, talk, sports, etc.

Aaaaaah, I missed you XM. Good thing I saved all the pre-sets.

The People’s Champ Comedy Competition at Darby’s Pub in Kits

I was telling you about the People’s Champ Comedy Competition before. Read all about it in a column by Miss 604. Patrick Maliha aka Mr Awesome is hosting this at Darby’s Pub in Kits (4th and MacDonald) I performed on Tuesday and with the help of some friends I made it on to the semis. There are 2 semi-final weeks starting next week. Here’s the list of performers.

TUESDAY AUG. 4th, 2009, baby!!
10. Dr. Russ Kennedy

It’s a tough line up but it’s just nice to make it this far. Four winners from each week move on to the finals on August 18th. Two winners will be picked by judges and two winners will be picked by the audience. So it’s just as important to have a good set as it is to bring a boat load of people to support you. BTW the grand prize is a $1000… the audience and the judges will each choose a winner and each person gets $500. If the audience and the judges pick the same person, he/she gets punched in the face… metaphorically with 1000 little fists of currency. See you on August 11th.

XM Satellite Radio Presents Canada’s Next Top Comic

Now for the other contest. About 5 weeks ago I read about a comedy contest put on by XM Satellite Radio Canada called Canada’s Next Top Comic. All you had to do is upload a 3 minute comedy bit to their website and apparently each week over an 8 week span 1 entry per week would move on to the finals. So I uploaded one of my bits, this one

XM Presents Canadas Next Top Comic .mp3

It was from a set I did at Yuk Yuks a few months ago. I think the crowd reaction probably had more to do with the quality of the clip but I’ll take it. So I got an email yesterday that said I made it to the final Top 8! Starting this Saturday there will be a 2 week voting process to determine the winner. You will only be allowed to vote once so there won’t be any ballot stuffing. You can start supporting me tomorrow by visiting http://laughattack.ca

Here’s the list of the Top 8. I found Youtubes of some of the other comics if you want to click on their names.

Art Factora, Vancouver BC
Brian Stollery, Calgary AB
Cal Post, Toronto, ON
Dan Quinn, Vancouver BC
Graham Davidson, St. Catharines ON
Jack Dani, Maple ON
John Hastings, Toronto ON (this clip he makes of BC… let’s not vote for him)
Mark DeBonis, Scarborough ON

The Grand Prize you ask?

From the website… “The winner will be voted on by the Canadian public and will receive the chance to perform their act LIVE on the XM Satellite Radio stage at Global ComedyFest Vancouver on Thursday, September 17th, 2009. The winner will also receive a cash prize of $2,000, flight and accommodation for two (2) in Vancouver, and a professionally recorded and mixed CD of their act – not to mention the title of Canada’s Next Top Comic!”

That’s right I’ll win an all expenses paid trip to Vancouver. Fingers crossed… Please vote and tell your friends.

Why would you air a Frank Caliendo bit that is based on a visual? I can’t see what the comedia

Why would you air a Frank Caliendo bit that is based on a visual?

I can’t see what the comedian did because I’m listening ON THE RADIO! You guys program for RADIO.

Maybe I have to step back and explain what radio is.

According to my Webster’s Dictionary, radio is the “communication of audible signals encoded in electromagnetic waved transmitted and received by radio”.

Hmm, that’s seems like it’s a little too complicated (for people who aired a bit based on a visual over the radio). But notice, I put stress on a word in that definition. The word is audible. Audible means “capable of being heard”. And visual means “related to the sense of sight”.

Now that I’ve defined radio, audible, and visual, we can move on to today’s real lesson: Picking the right programming for your format.

Step 1: Know what format you’re broadcasting in.

Step 2: Know what types of information you can convey in your format.

Step 3:Make sure the material you’ve chosen to air can be completely appreciated considering the limitations of your broadcast medium.

So, if you’re airing a bit that is totally built upon some physical act (gesture, facial expression, movement) you need to make sure that you are broadcasting in a format that has visual capabilities.

You’re welcome. Class dismissed.

I’ve already had such a busy morning that if I didn’t take the time to relax and regroup, I’d go a little nutty. Wouldn’t we all? This is why I’m such a huge fan of my DIRECTV satellite TV service. All of the best TV imaginable, my movies, my BBC America, my SETANTA sports…I can just sit and enjoy anything I want and be entertained. But that’s not always relaxing. Especially not the sports. Sometimes that gets me very wound up and it isn’t the best way to let go of the day’s pressures…especially when they’ve already set in before noon. No, DIRECTV helps me unwind and relax with XM satellite radio. I love the variety of music. It’s sorted into genre’s and there are great mix channels, too. I pump it through my home entertainment system, so I’ve got it coming through the TV and my stereo. I’ve always loved satellite radio in rental cars when I’ve traveled. I’ve just never splurged to get it in my personal car. Now that I have it in my home, I’m getting spoiled and think I might have to make the switch in my car, too.

I already rant about my HD DVR Plus service, with Scheduler, I couldn’t live without that. Now, I have something else that I’m becoming addicted to and don’t think I’ll ever want to live without either. I get more than 70 channels of specialty music from XM radio. Smooth melodies, perfect for background music when I need to calm and clear my mind in order to write. Then, when the feeling hits, I can change the channel to the dance stations and get some exercise. After all, I’m sitting here way too much..it can get stressful!

With DIRECTV I have DVR Plus, so I can record hundreds of hours of television programming and watch it in the same HD format it was originally broadcast in. DIRECTV satellite is an affordable choice for your home entertainment, with packages of more than 150 channels starting as low as $29.99 per month!

I forgive you for playing the Nutrocker. I forgive you for playing that awful rendition of Woodstock.

So you want to know why I forgive you?

Because, today you played Jelly Roll by Blue Murder and I didn’t even have to call in and request it.

And then, a few songs later I heard Naughty Naughty by Danger Danger.

Hair Nation, were you looking through my old cassette tapes? the ones I wrote on in metallic gold marker? the ones that said “Juli loves XXXXXX 4-ever”? Those tapes. You must have been. Now play some old Dokken and Faster Pussycat and L.A. Guns before I shake off the nostalgia by listening to Atreyu and Bayside and NOFX and 3OH!3 and Kings of Leon and AFI.

But XM, I love you. Never change the Hair Nation playlist. And never, never, never play Nutrocker again.

Picking the right gift for Mother’s day shouldn’t be left to the last minute. Go ahead and put some thought into it! Think about what all mom does for the family and how often she works hard to keep the peace among siblings, kids and dad, and yet she maintains her own sanity!

Moms love music just as much as kids and dads and with DIRECTV’s numerous musical selections, if you don’t have satellite TV yet, your home should get its own dish installed just for mom! Now, she can have more than just the music video channels and music mix channels, XM satellite radio has partnered with DIRECTV to provide subscribers with more than 70 channels of satellite radio. Depending on your satellite package, mom can have not only her favorite HD TV movie, documentary, learning, and comedy shows to watch – but now, she can work, relax, or dance to her favorite music selections, too! With bundled packages being the popular way to pay, why not go for the best value and selections available? When looking for the right Mother’s day gift, DIRECTV and XM satellite radio are sure to give mom more entertainment choices for herself and more options for keeping peace in the family.

Now, this isn’t to say that mom won’t appreciate breakfast in bed, a nice dinner out on the town, a great bottle of perfume, jewelry, or a new car…but DIRECTV satellite television is always a definite winner! Really, you can’t go wrong when it comes to this kind of entertainment. Personally, DIRECTV is my number one choice for home entertainment…I can watch, record and enjoy at my own schedule – not the network’s. With DIRECTV satellite television, I have DVR Plus, so I can record hundreds of hours of television programming and watch it in the same HD format that it was originally broadcast in.

I’m still thinking about yesterday’s post (because in addition to being anxious, I’m also mildly obsessive … it’s a great combo), specifically my driving anxiety. Throughout all the years I regularly drove a car–from the age of 16 until I moved to Chicago and sold my red Ford Escort wagon–the one thing that took my focus off the anxiety for a hot second was the radio. I almost always had a functional radio, tape deck or CD player.

Now? Not so much.

When we moved out of the city last year, I didn’t own a car. Brian had his own plus an SUV he inherited from his father. I drove the SUV for a bit before we got the car I drive now–a 1992 Nissan Sentra Brian’s mom and stepdad had been trying to get rid of for a while. It’s a great car. It has nearly 160,000 miles on it, but has been (and continues to be) maintained quite well.

The only crappy thing about the car is the radio. It never got good reception a day in its life and pretty much the only station that comes in clearly is WGN Radio 720. Then, several months ago, I was driving to a woman’s house to do an interview. The radio started to make a funny noise and then it stopped making sounds altogether. I got kind of nervous and switched it over to FM. Nothing was coming in, but I could hear static. That made me happy only because it meant there was no issue with the car battery.

When I finally broke down and bought an iPod a month or two ago, I found out I could play it in the car using a cassette and an associated connector that came with our XM Satellite Radio unit. I was so excited! It was great for a few days until I realized one of my speakers was kind of wonky. It would go out for long stretches of time (during which I would crank up the volume), then suddenly start working again. Drivers and pedestrians alike are lucky I haven’t caused an accident due to jumping out of my skin from the abrupt volume increase.

Now, in addition to the speaker issue, sometimes the cassette doesn’t work properly–it keeps wanting to flip itself over and over again. Sometimes, when it isn’t flipping, it makes a squeaky noise that I can hear over the sound of the music. And, I can only listen to music through the iPod. Every time I try to play a podcast, I can never fully hear it even when the volume is at its maximum level.

There are days I ask the universe to throw me a bone. Please, please, please just let me have some entertainment on my anxiety-ridden drives. But then I have to remind myself that at least I have a car, that I’m lucky enough not to have to walk or bike miles and miles and miles in nasty weather.

I love nostalgia. Right now, I’m addicted to the radio classics channel on XM Satellite radio hosted by Greg Bell. I’ve also been watching the first season of the Mission Impossible and Combat DVD sets I received for Christmas. As someone who has been in the public relations industry for over 20 years, I love reminiscing about great campaigns and placements of the past. However, while it’s great to wax nostalgic about one’s career and revisit classic television shows from my youth, when it comes to my profession, I love the new tools we have at our disposal.

Over the weekend, I activated our company’s account on Twitter (@imediapr). As I began posting my tweets, I was impressed at how quickly one can engage the audience, and the valuable information shared by those you elect to follow.

While following Mike Hayes on Twitter, one of my favorite former employees, I saw a link he posted about the Chicago Sun Times running an item on bacon haiku’s in a feature column about the bacon craze that is taking over the internet. For months, bacon has been “sizzling.” From a New York Times story last week to numerous Facebook groups devoted to pork’s favorite offspring, the online world has made bacon the most talked about food in America.

The ability to engage people from all walks of life by letting them share their passions is what social media is all about. It is now how we can effectively take a client’s message directly to a broad spectrum of audiences.

My colleagues at Capital Public Affairs are currently driving a viral campaign to change the direct shipping laws in New Jersey, which currently prohibit the purchase of wine over the web, via fax or shipped to their homes after being purchased in-person out-of-state. They have created a web site www.uncorknj.com where consumers are given a chance to contact their legislators directly through a legislative action center. Those participating can write letters, post their own stories about how they have been prevented from purchasing wine from out-of-state and receive updates on the campaign.

News has also been posted on attempts in Illinois, Massachusetts and Michigan, to change their archaic direct shipping laws. Uncorknj.com is now serving as a means to join consumers in a common bond to encourage change. Legislators in New Jersey are indeed acknowledging the receipt of letters from their constituents about this issue and are taking notice. A legislative hearing is expected soon.

So whether it’s voting on your favorite Super Bowl ad to helping eradicate an archaic state law to writing haiku about your favorite food, going viral in the right way can earn you the bacon.

Did you know that there are FREE alternatives to 411? I absolutely HATE paying the $1.99 for 411. I have found a couple of alternatives that actually work.

First, there is Google Text. Yes, it is google text. This does NOT require the internet to be on your phone. Simply text whatever it is you are trying to find to the numbers 466453 (Google) and within seconds you will be sent the top three results in three different text messages. The address and phone number will appear in these text messages. This ONLY works if the business you are trying to find is listed on google (which what business isn’t these days?).

The second alternative (if you do not have text messaging) is to call 1-800-411-5000. This service is offered by XM and is just like 411. They do not connect you to the person, however, they do provide the phone number. So the next time you can not find a phone number, remember these alternatives.

WASHINGTON – When the nation’s in pain, Washington often gains.

Whether it’s a buildup of Civil War troops, Depression-era bureaucrats or defense contractors after Sept. 11, the region has prospered in times of crisis. Today, the financial meltdown is delivering a jolt of its own.

Lawyers, lobbyists and public relations experts — many of whom live and work in Virginia and Maryland suburbs — are benefiting as companies from Wall Street to Motor City seek a piece of Washington’s $700 billion financial bailout, and try to influence any regulatory strings attached. Business is also percolating as President-elect Barack Obama prepares an economic stimulus package comprised of infrastructure spending and tax breaks that could exceed $800 billion.

“There will be a mad rush to have influence on where that money should go,” said David Rubenstein, co-founder and managing director of The Carlyle Group, the Washington-based private-equity firm whose partners include former high-ranking U.S. and foreign government officials. Far from struggling, the Washington region could be on the verge of “boom times,” Rubenstein said.

At the very least, the expanding federal government — which has added more than 7,500 jobs in the Washington region over the past decade — is helping to insulate the area’s economy and its 4.5 million residents from the worst effects of the recession.

Annual military and homeland security spending has risen sharply since Sept. 11, leading to years of prosperity for the region’s consultants and contractors, including well-known defense companies such as Lockheed Martin Corp., of Bethesda, Md., and General Dynamics Corp., of Falls Church, Va.

Now, as Uncle Sam mounts a multitrillion-dollar effort to rescue the country from its worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, some companies based outside the region are beefing up their Washington offices.

Local business leaders say the influx of influence-peddlers, combined with leadership changes in the White House and Congress, could provide a small lift to the region’s commercial and residential real estate markets, which are hurting like everywhere else.

To be sure, the region is not immune to the recession.

Retailers are struggling, tourism is flat, unemployment is on the rise (particularly within D.C.) and municipal budgets are strained. Washington is facing a $127 million budget gap, while neighboring Virginia and Maryland face even steeper shortfalls.

Some well-known companies based in the region, including Sunrise Senior Living, XM Satellite Radio, the Carlyle Group and the Washington Post Co. have been forced to lay off staff or ask workers to take early retirement.

However, the mood among many business leaders — especially those connected to federal lobbying and contracting — is upbeat compared with the rest of the country.

The Washington offices of companies seeking bailout money will be transformed into “mini headquarters,” said Stanley Collender, managing director at Qorvis Communications, a consulting firm.

“There’s a sense of unprecedented realignment” thanks to the turnover in the White House and Congress, said Beth Solomon, a recruiter who works for lawyers and lobbyists.

Washington and its suburbs gained 31,000 jobs over the 12-month period that ended in November, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Losses in construction and retail jobs are being offset by gains in federal government positions as well as health and business services, according to senior fellow John McClain of George Mason University’s Center for Regional Analysis.

Those gains come as most major metropolitan areas shed thousands of jobs. McClain predicts positive job growth for the Washington area in 2009, too — though he expects it will weaken to about 20,000 new jobs.

The region’s unemployment rate of 4.4 percent in November, while edging upward, is the lowest among metropolitan areas with a population of at least 1 million, tied with Oklahoma City, according to the most recent Labor Department data. Nationally, the unemployment rate was 7.2 percent in December.

With government workers and contractors accounting for roughly one-third of the job force, Washington tends to prosper in times of crisis.

During the Civil War, the modest city grew as the government swelled to administer the war and soldiers arrived to protect the capital. The federal work force expanded again during the Great Depression under President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal, and the Pentagon was constructed during World War II. The Department of Homeland Security was created after Sept. 11, leading to another burst of hiring, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan expanded the Pentagon’s budget to $612 billion in 2009, compared with $310 billion in 2001, before the attacks.

Booz Allen Hamilton Inc., a large consulting firm based in McLean, Va., expects to end the fiscal year more than 15 percent ahead of last year’s revenue, in part because of growing demand for financial services experts as regulators and Congress pursue banking reforms, spokeswoman Jennifer Rogers said.

Jon Wohlfert, with the corporate housing company BridgeStreet Worldwide, said he has seen a recent upswing in bookings from consulting companies such as Ernst & Young and Deloitte that are looking to bring workers to the area.

While preliminary data from the city’s tourism bureau indicates the number of visitors to the nation’s capital was essentially flat in 2008, the city is anticipating a population burst of at least 1 million for Inauguration Day, Jan. 20.

“This is our Olympics,” said Jim Dinegar, president and chief executive of the Greater Washington Board of Trade.

Yet even these advantages only go so far in a downturn this severe.

Foreclosures and declining home values have plagued portions of Washington’s suburbs. And while the real estate market in Washington and its close-in suburbs has been more resilient because of limited building space and the lure of easier commutes, demand has cooled.

Even so, the city’s office vacancy rate is only about 7 percent, a strong number in good economic times, according to Neil Albert, D.C.’s deputy mayor for planning and economic development.

Albert, like others in the business community, said being so closely linked to the federal government is a good place to be these days.

“They’re not going to pick up and move overnight,” he said.

Tuesday, Monday, November 24,2008 – Charlotte, NC Studio

An note to friends and “Dialed In” listeners:

I wanted to let you know how much I have, over the years, appreciated your friendship, support, loyalty, calls on the air, race rants, observations and the good times we’ve shared over the radio on “Dialed In” on XM. It may be that some of you are now SIRIUS subscribers, that you got the “Best Of” package and can get NASCAR Radio now on XM or that you have been listening every day and are tried and true loyal XM’ers. When I decided to stay at XM back when NASCAR Radio moved to SIRIUS, I thought of you – of how many radios you already had purchased and I stayed. Many of you did too and I’ll never forget your kindness and support during that time.

Many of you moved with me from XM channel 144 to 148 when they moved the show after the merger and I was truly amazed. When they moved me again to channel I43 I figured it would be really tough for you to find the show – but you moved in droves and sought out being a part of “Dialed In” again. I was humbled. I promised that you all would be the first to know what would happen to “Dialed In” when the two services merged. Now, finally I can tell you.

On December 1, 2008, I am going to be moving to SIRIS NASCAR Radio on The “Best of” Channel 128. “Dialed In” will once again, be a part of the line up on Sirius NASCAR Radio. I will be anchoring coverage at the race track, on weekends, doing specials and “insider” coverage as well as doing “Dialed In” during the week. I will be returning to the radio channel that I helped to launch when NASCAR Radio first began. I was so proud of helping launch the initial NASCAR Radio channel and I’m happy to be returning to it now.

“Dialed In with Claire B Lang on Sirius XM” New York City – December 1

I will kick off being a part of SIRIUS NASCAR Radio on Monday, December 1 at the Sirius XM Studios in New York City. I’ll have a special show each night after covering all of the press conferences, parties and insider events that NASCAR will have during Champion’s Week in NYC.

I’ll take you behind the scenes as if you are actually at the events yourself. Plus, I’ll host an exclusive show with the entire Hendrick Championship team, featuring Jimmie Johnson, Chad Knaus, Rick Hendrick and their entire crew!

My main concern now is that no one tunes into XM Channel 143 on Monday, December 1 looking for “Dialed In” and is disappointed not to find it. We have been moved many times and I worry that some of you may be looking for my New York City Champion’s Week coverage on the channel I have been on the past several weeks.

If you have SIRIUS Make sure to update your radio pre-set to SIRIUS NASCAR Radio channel 128 so you don’t miss one second of the show on December 1. If you have XM and you don’t have “The Best of SIRIUS” on your XM radio, you can get it today by logging onto www.xmradio.com/best or by calling 888-5-SIRIXM (that’s 888-574-7496) right now.

I have been blogging here on Claireblang.com to keep you all posted so be sure to keep up with what is happening with me and the show behind the scenes by logging on here for all of the details!

In closing, It’s hard for me to tell you what you have all meant to me over the years. If you are a regular listener then you know how much you matter to me. I most often travel alone on the road although I have friends on the circuit. But most times I am alone in a studio in a city away from home and when I click on the ISDN broadcast line you are there. You are my friends, my neighborhood and my listeners and you all matter a lot to me. You have shared much with me over the years and I wanted to make sure that you were a part of the latest chapter of my life.

Thanks for everything! I’m lucky to have had listeners like you. I hope to hear from you on Monday, December 1 at 7:00 p.m. EST when I sit down behind the microphone in the Sirius studio in New York City for the very first time to kick off Champions Week coverage.

Many blessings and happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

Thank you for your loyal, support and friendship.

Claire B.
