They’re here! Kind of reminds you of the Poltergeist line doesn’t it? You remember that creepy kid sitting in front of the TV saying, “They’re back”. The holidays, with all the complications are upon us. Am I the only one that does not get all “misty-eyed” when this annual event overcomes our senses? I have friends who are all done with their Christmas shopping and have still found time to cook a 20 course meal for Thanksgiving. They brag about it like they are some kind of damn holiday superhero. They have got Christmas trees and lights up and ready to go on display just as soon as Uncle Fred gets up from the Thanksgiving table and announces that he is “stuffed like a tick”. The iconic image of the Norman Rockwell family sitting down at the table and giving thanks has been replaced with people making battle plans to tackle the BLACK FRIDAY sales. They have got their sale flyers on the ready. They have worked out a route based on store opening times. They have their gym shoes ready to run. Hopefully, they also have their health insurance paid up so that when they are caught up in the inevitable door opening crush they will be able to receive adequate medical care.

Before I get off on an entire Christmas tangent, let’s talk about Thanksgiving a little bit more. When I was a kid my grandmother would plan the meal and my mother would spend days cooking. Relatives that we did not see that often would descend on the house. My brother and I would begin hiding our “good stuff” in anticipation of these relatives arrival. We knew what we had to do based on past experiences. Our cousin Eddie, from Indiana, would swipe any toy he could make off with. Our cousins from St. Louis would just break stuff. They were all really good about appearing to be angelic just so that my brother and I would look bad when we complained. We recently had the privilege of attending a family reunion as adults and told each of these relatives just how much we despised them when we were little. If you ever have that opportunity, I highly recommend it. It feels really good. I now know why my dad would always make sure he told my mother, “these are YOUR people”. It had to make him feel good knowing that HIS people lived too far away to ever be a family dinner threat. Mom prepared enough food to feed a small village. Everything had to be made perfect. Great-grandma’s china, the Fostoria water goblets, the salt and pepper shakers shaped like little Pilgrims, and of course all the construction paper masterpieces made by my brother and I. I never remember my mom sitting down at the table with the rest of the family. She was pulling stuff out of the kitchen and refilling dishes and glasses for the entire meal. She cooked 3 days and the entire meal was inhaled in a matter of about 20 minutes. As everyone was moving away from the dining room to find a spot to lie down was when she finally sat down to eat. The sad thing is, no one ever thought anything about it. No one ever told her to stop fussing over them and sit down to eat.

My brother and I laughed the other day that we were still sitting at the “kids” table until each of us got married. I guess that is what finally moved you from that shaky card table to the dining room. Of course I did miss seeing Cousin Eddie stuff his mouth full, and then when he thought no adults were looking, do his “pimple” imitation.

I don’t do the big meal. I don’t expect my kids to trek halfway across the country for some dry turkey. I don’t have to figure out how in the hell to get all of those leftovers into the fridge. My husband and I go out. I really don’t even care if it is a traditional Thanksgiving meal. I think that we will be going out for Chinese this year or maybe Mexican. Neither one of these restaurants will be crowded and hopefully cousin Eddie will not be there.

The situation is this, I have a Tallman and he needs some pretty funky christmas presents. So far the only option I have battened down is a years subscription to Suicide Girls. I have a decent amount of money set aside for him, as he deserves it. This year has been pretty terrible for me, which i may go into another time, but the Tallman has been with me all the way holding my hand, loving me and sending me to the shower when i get stinky. He deserves some pretty major thanks.

Any suggestions would be awesome!

The Tallman is very tall and very broad, so clothes are awkward, otherwise he loves non-fiction books, metal (as in the music) and sports. He runs and occasionally Djs a local alt night, he is learning to cook (life skills for the win!) and has a wicked sense of humor. He is obsessed with sponge bob, but I always get him sponge bob stuff so its time for a change.

In need of your awesome gifting suggestions,

Minnie xoxo

Thoughts of Christmas presents have started, and wonders never cease, I’ve actually started buying them!

I went to Sandton yesterday to finish the New Zealand presents, which are being posted tomorrow… and hopefully they’ll get there in time!! I could have spent a fortune in Big Blue but I was good, and only got pressies!

Then I went to the toy shop and bought the most awesome Fisher Price dinosaur for Connor! Laura had told me about the range, and I had to find it. Wow! I wish I could afford the bigger ones for him! They had such an awesome range!

This afternoon however, thoughts turned to myself… after dreaming about getting a 70-200mm f2.8 L for myself… and a shootsac and a baroque cover for myself (ps. if anyone is travelling to SA from USA this Xmas and is willing to bring the shootsac for me, I’d love you forever, they don’t ship to SA, and local places are nearly triple the price)… I got the email from Photojojo with the usual tempations.

Except this time, I’m actually interested in what’s on the newsletter!! Wow!! How cool is this little lens? I want one, I can just imagine the funky photos I’d be able to take with it! And the piggy bank frame… what a cool idea!

I think it’s time to put a xmas wishlist together!

Oh look, Pete and June (And their 3 bloody awful kits, 3 dogs, 7 chickens, 2 rabbits and their const

Oh look, Pete and June (And their 3 bloody awful kits, 3 dogs, 7 chickens, 2 rabbits and their constant stream of posh friends who come and go) have decided to put up their Christmas lights meaning I might as well be sleeping in direct view of the sun as their lights are so bright. Not to mention tacky.

What I find strange though is that garish and over the top displays are normally reserved for those who live on council estates. The general rule is that the less money someone has, the more they spend on Christmas lights. It’s an actual scientific fact. Walk down any street where the average family is close to the poverty line and you can guarantee that at Christmas it’ll be like walking through Las Vegas. But my neighbours are the richest people I know.

I’m sure none of these people give a shit, but I have to say, your displays look absolutely hideous. And since when have Homer Simpson and Winnie the Pooh had anything to do with Christmas? A tacky star or nativity scene, yes. Even a snowman is just about acceptable. A 6ft inflatable cartoon character however? You must be joking. Is it not enough for you turn your neighbourhood into a walking display of tat without you well and truly taking the piss out of Christmas and what it’s supposed to stand for by using Winnie the Pooh as your main centrepiece?

I mean, just look at this from a quick google search:

Daisy’s dream? It’s an absolute nightmare.

And you just know the people inside the house can’t afford to eat because every last penny is being swallowed up by the electricity meter and it’s paying for the Chief Executive to have daily champagne baths whilst being rubbed down by a work experience girl.

Some displays look quite nice – about 1% of them in fact. But it’s a dark November evening, I’ve got my curtains shut, yet I still need to wear sunglasses inside my own house because the neighbours insist on showing off. Turn them off. There should be a law that these lights are only allowed on for 5 minutes on Christmas Day.

Get into the Christmas spirit? No thanks, it’s still a month away and I’ve already had enough. Still, eyes peeled for the tackiest display…

Design week actually published news about Peter Saville designing Manchester’s wrapping paper. I compelteley respect Mr. Saville but ……Really? Is this news? For those of you who can’t belive it (as I couldn’t) you can read the article here

I’m getting so tired of… wait.. not getting, i am tired of all these politically correct

I’m getting so tired of… wait.. not getting, i am tired of all these politically correct donkeys that are determined to steal the joy from everything we have. Who the hell are you to start crying foul that saying Merry Christmas could offend someone.
Offended, seriously? No one is forcing you to say it, just like no one forces me to say Happy Kwanzaa, or to celebrate Ramadan. I have the choice, and that’s the most important part of this… i have the choice to acknowledge, or partake in this. Why would I be offended if someone else chooses to display their celebration of these times? If a store has a display that I don’t like, I have the choice not to go there.. What kind of an asshole would I be to tell them they can’t sell it?
Soon enough there will be no more holidays… the risk of offending someone is too great.
I’m just flat out irritated as I sit here and listen to these news stories…

This one kills me…

a ban on Santa, candy canes, stockings, and all Christmas, Hanukkah and other “religious items.”

Red and green tissue paper to wrap presents was also crossed off the list because it looked too “Christmasy,” McMillan said.

“One of the parents said, ‘If we allow Santa, what do we say if a child brings in a swastika? Do we allow that too?’”

When did Santa become offensive? Who in their right mind compares Santa to a swastika? You should be ashamed… oh, and let’s not pick colors that are “too christmasy”?

Why can’t we just allow the kids to continue enjoying the holidays for what they are, how we remember them, and focus on having time together with our families instead of wasting so much time with these ridiculous battles to prove your own ignorance. Remember, there’s alot of people who cannot be home with their families these holidays, because they’re out fighting to protect your freedoms to run your fat mouth. Stop stealing the smiles from the kids and get your ass home & spend some time with them.

This goes right in line with all these kids sports where “everyone wins”… Oh man, that’s a whole other topic.. but these kids grow up with a false sense of reality.. no sense of accomplishment, or understanding of competition.. You want to win, work for it…

Ok, i got work to do, have a good day.. and in case I don’t post before then, Happy Thanksgiving. Keep our soldiers in your thoughts.
