The guys over at PhoneArena got their hands on a prototype unit of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, and made a video! By the looks of it, design is still immaculate. The keyboard looks nice, large and usable. We’ll see how much work was done with the panels interface. Original XPERIA X1 owners should remember the laggy panels interface. Only problem is that they got their hands on the less delicious-looking silver model. That aside, the video is worth a watch. Video below.

O X1 utiliza o Windows Mobile como Sistema Operacional, porém ele é equipado com um launcher de aplicativos configurável, onde você poderá personalizar as tarefas que você mais utiliza. This is the leaked picture of the rumoured successor to the XPERIA X1 codenamed Vulcan otherwise known as XPERIA X2. The picture is very small and of low quality but you can still see the Sony Ericsson branding with the XPERIA logo. There is also the Windows logo on the QWERTY keyboard portion.

There are chances of this being a Chinese fake, a photoshop or even an early prototype version of the XPERIA X1 itself. We will just have to wait and see to confirm that.

Sim!! A Sony Ericsson esta planejando  liberar a nova versão do firmware para XPERIA X1 ™. Uma das novidades é o apoio do BlackBerry ligação. O novo firmware irá provavelmente começar com índice R3 e será lançado em junho de 2009. Ao mesmo tempo, você pode atualizar o seu XPERIA X1 ™ para o novo firmware, utilizando o Sony Ericsson Update Service aplicação, não é genial isso.

Rogers has just unveiled some of their future handsets and it’s a pretty good line-up. Take a look at it below, courtesy of Boy Genius.

As you can see, the HTC Dream and Magic are going to be available for as low as $199 on a 3-year contract. What’s surprising is that 2 days ago, we heard that Rogers would sell the HTC Dream and Magic for $549 off-contract, but it looks like the price has shot up to $649. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 will also be making its debut as one of the most expensive handsets to launch on Rogers in a while. The one that should create the most buzz is Rogers’ listing of the next iPhone pegged for a July / August release. The pricing is still TBD, but it’s still interesting news.

If you own the Xperia X1, chances are, you probably love the fact that you have Microsoft Mobile Office on your mobile phone. You can edit and make Word and Excel Documents on the go. However, since the Xperia X1 is not a PC, there are limitations to what MS Mobile Office can do. For one, Mobile Excel cannot save excel files with file extension csv. Unlike the desktop version of Excel wherein you can save as file types to different version of excel and even csv files, Mobile Excel cannot.

If you want to create database files, you need third party applications which you can install on your Xperia. Pockert Database Viewer is one such application which can view and edit CSV files. As for Pocket Word, opening VERY large doc files will take a LONG time. Also, when you transfer the documents you made on your Pocket Word to your PC, you’ll notice that these documents will have the file extension docx. Now if you have Microsoft Office lower than the 2007 version, you need to install some sort of extended application for your MS Word to view these type of files. Don’t worry, it’s free but the application will take up a lot of space from your hard disk drive.

So even though Xperia X1 is cool to carry around on a business trip, I wouldn’t really leave my laptop if I were you.

there are these cloying hypothetical statements that go “if i had one million dollars, i would…”, which never fail to turn on the boredom in me. one million dollars is such an unchallenging number to fit your imagination into. first off, it’s a huge amount, so it enables you to rattle off just about everything you reasonably desire (shoes, clothes, jewelry, car, house, anything) and still have spare change left.

El teléfono Xperia X1, considerado el más ambicioso de la historia de Sony Ericsson, llegará a España el próximo noviembre, de la mano de Vodafone. Según explica Magnus J. Andersson, jefe de producto de Xperia X1, se trata “del mejor móvil del mundo”.

Funciona con el sistema operativo Windows Mobile, presume de una pantalla táctil con la más elevada resolución del mercado e incorpora un teclado qwerty para introducir datos como si de un portátil se tratara. Su potente procesador Qualcomm, la conectividad HSDPA y HSUPA, además de WiFi, y la carcasa de metal son algunas de las características de un equipo cuyo precio en cada mercado estará diseñado por la política de subvenciones de los operadores locales.

La principal novedad del primogénito de la familia Xperia es la presentación de múltiples escritorios a través de paneles. De esta forma, los usuarios pueden acceder a las pantallas de música, vídeo, productividad o de diferentes contenidos como Google o YouTube en décimas de segundo. “No tiene un solo escritorio, sino muchos, en función de la actividad”, añade Andersson.

En un encuentro con un reducido grupo de periodistas en la nueva sede de Sony Ericsson en Lund, Dinamarca, Andersson también aseguró que el nuevo móvil cumple perfectamente con las necesidades que se demandan a cualquier portátil.

Reto a Apple y Nokia

Por otra parte, el fabricante sueco japonés confirmó ayer su irrupción en el negocio de la tienda musical, donde competirá con Apple ( iTunes) y Nokia (Comes with Music). Se trata del ‘Play Now’, plataforma con la que el fabricante sueco japonés arrima la sardina al negocio de los servicios digitales.

De estos movimientos se desprende que las nuevas fuentes de ingresos del mercado de móviles fluirán más por el cauce de los servicios que de la venta de terminales, por muy superlativos que éstos sean. Sony Ericsson explicó las virtudes del ‘Play Now’, un acceso que está disponible en 200 millones de terminales de Sony Ericsson en 35 países, y por el que los usuarios podrán toda adquirir la música, películas y videojuegos que deseen. En la iniciativa colaboran los líderes del sector de contenidos, desde Sony hasta BMG, pasado por Emi, Bertelsmann y Universal. El principal atractivo del ‘play now’ es su capacidad para “abrir una ventana a los servicios”, según explicó ayer Dick Komiyama, presidente de Sony Ericsson.

Pero ahora, además, los usuarios pueden acceder a su música favorita y descargarla al instante en su ordenador, para disfrutarla en cualquier momento a través de su móvil. Para desmarcarse de la competencia, Sony Ericsson permitirá disfrutar de millones de títulos de forma ilimitada a cambio de una suscripción de alrededor de 13 euros al mes. El primero en lanzar esta oferta será Telenor, operador nórdico que ofertará este servicio antes de Navidades bajo las marcas ‘Play Now Plus’ y ‘Play Now Arena’. La primera de ellas, además, permitirá a sus suscriptores disponer de un centenar de canciones exentas de DRM (programa de protección de copia) por cada ocho meses de contrato. Es decir, los clientes disfrutarán de canciones que podrán copiar y compartir a través de cualquier soporte o dispositivo. El fabricante planea extender este servicio a Suiza, Austria, Francia y Reino Unido antes de fin de año. A España llegará a partir de febrero.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 gets firmware update, too!

Sony Ericsson has released a new version of the software of the Xperia X1. Faster camera are among the improvements that some users are experiencing after the update. Although the Sony Ericsson Update Service update program informs that it has the latest version of the software installed when you connect the X1 to the computer, you can still update to a later version by choosing to “reinstall” the version you already have.

Mobil.se have tested this somewhat strange method to update without problems and according to Sony Ericsson’s support department will only move if a bug in the update program that enables the user may be incorrect information.

Sony Ericsson has not gone out with any information on exactly what improvements the new software includes but some users report that the camera has become significantly faster.

After updating the Mobil.se’s phone are we to correspondence between the panels in some cases seem to go a little faster than before but at the same time fluctuations are still tough on many occasions. The difference we see is so small that we do not dare say anything with certainty about a possible improvement.

Sony Ericsson recently reported huge losses for the second straight quarter, for which it blamed the struggling economy. The results included a $240 million quarter loss and a 21 percent drop in phone shipments, garnering a vote of low confidence among analysts. And as Dick Komiyama, president of the joint venture between Sony (s sne) and Ericsson (s ericy), noted, the global handset market is contracting — in other words, the bleeding won’t stop anytime soon.

But Sony Ericsson faces more problems than most in that its phones don’t do anything particularly well. If it wants to avoid further losses, it needs to focus, notably on improved OS design, open systems, and flexible media integration.

Apart from the Nokia-styled (s nok) G705u, Sony Ericsson has failed to push the design envelope, impairing its phones with stale ‘candybar’ designs and small screen sizes. Most critically, its phones’ best features have been sabotaged by uneven executions. For example, 2008’s Xperia X1 phone has sleek media menus and direct YouTube support, but transitioning between productivity-heavy applications on its WinMo 6.1 OS is a mess. Similarly, the W890i has excellent audio fidelity and music features (like a MusicDJ that helps you compose ringtones), but it’s WiFi-free and its keys are uncomfortably tiny.

In order to truly find success in the mobile market, Sony Ericsson needs to:

• Build media-friendly phone UIs that take better advantage of its Gracenote metadata software. Easier integration with wireless hardware (from cars to stereo systems) will allow people to stream content between all gadgets, not just Sony devices (See: PSP with PS3). While you can already do this to some extent, existing Sony Ericsson apps don’t make the process any smoother. Flexible apps would prompt people to use them more and increase a phone’s value.
• Include visually dynamic software, like Microsoft’s (s msft) MixView music recommendation engine. It would give people a direct incentive to use Sony Ericsson’s Play Now Plus download service, which is also hampered with DRM music.
• Build a new operating system. Other phone makers have bypassed Sony Ericsson with a simpler OS and faster transitions between apps, as mentioned above. The company has promised an Android OS phone by the end of the year as well as an improved Windows Mobile 7.
• Keep all handset prices competitively low. With their sub-$200 Blu-ray players, Sony and Samsung found out this winter that affordable products from big-name brands are the most successful in a bad economy.

Sony Ericsson also needs to simplify by cutting its number of phone models. Counting CES announcements, there will be 24 phones laced with its Project Capuchin API. That’s too many. The company succeeded with mid-market customers when ‘high-end’ features were the province of business users, but that ended when the iPhone brought multimedia and web access to the mainstream. Its newest phones do include high-end features but they’re split between the Cyber-shot and Walkman lines. One phone has an 8-megapixel camera, but doesn’t have gesture control; another has shake-shuffling without camera face detection. Placing the best features in one high-end phone would create an excellent competitor for the Palm (s palm) Pre and the iPhone (s aapl).

Sadly, Sony’s business plan centers around maintaining legacy systems and saturating the market with multiple phones (even if evidence in the last few years suggests customers don’t care about brand loyalty and expect the full feature suite), so don’t expect such an approach to change anytime soon. At the very least, Sony Ericsson should create one major Walkman phone, one photo phone, and one low-priced web/business phone that combines the improvements already mentioned. The rest should be discontinued.

Greater openness also means taking a risk with gaming applications. Recently, Sony rejected Ericsson’s idea for a PSP phone, probably to avoid diluting the strength of the console. But a new focus on open-source, App Store-like gaming development needs to extend to Sony Ericsson phones. If not, Nintendo might get there first and jump further ahead of its rival.

If Sony Ericsson doesn’t make some of these changes, it will continue its recent pattern of bringing features a year behind its competitors — and its decline will continue.

Εδώ και κάποιες εβδομάδες το iPhone έχει βρεθεί στο κουτί και ξεκουράζεται μετά από την έντονη χρήση των προηγούμενων μηνών. Ως άξιος αντικαταστάτης του έχει “προσληφθεί” ένα Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, που έκανα δώρο στον εαυτό μου τα Χριστούγεννα. Ας είναι καλά το MobileCenter! Στην αρχή απογοητεύτηκα, γιατί τα Windows Mobile 6.1 φαντάζουν όχι απλά δύσβατα αλλά και απαρχαιωμένα απέναντι στο user interface του iPhone αλλά και των Symbian συσκευών. Ωστόσο, μέρα με την ημέρα εκτιμώ όλο και περισσότερο τα χαρακτηριστικά του και την πολύ καλή ποιότητα κατασκευής του.

Για τις ημέρες μου στη Σαλαμίνα, το Xperia X1 έχει αποδειχθεί ως ένας σίγουρος σύντροφος στα βαρετά πρωινά και τις αγγαρείες του Πολεμικού Ναυτικού. Μπορεί για την ώρα να μην ολοκληρώνει το σύνολο των social web δραστηριοτήτων μου, αλλά και το Facebook μου έχω, και το Twitter μου έχω και τα e-mails και όπως λέει και ένα jiggle του Mad Radio “και γαύρο έχω!”. Τα panels, σίγουρα, αποτελούν τη μεγάλη ατραξιόν της συσκευής με τα οποία μπορεί ο οποιοσδήποτε κάτοχος της να οργανώσει τις πληροφορίες που επιθυμεί και να έλθει σε επαφή με web εφαρμογές όπως το Gmail και το Windows Live Messenger.

PS. Λόγω του ότι η συσκευή είναι ακόμα στη φάση της προπαραγγελίας από το δίκτυο της Wind, δεν είναι εύκολο να βρεθούν ρυθμίσεις για τις internet συνδέσεις των άλλων παροχών για τα Windows Mobile. Για το λόγο αυτό, ανέβασα τις ρυθμίσεις που μου έστειλε η Vodafone.
