There are plenty of web browsers for us to choose from. The fact that are plenty is a web site designers nightmare because mostly none of them truly follow the defined standards properly, they all add things, they all do it slightly different. Viewing a web site in a browser that doesn’t render the web site correctly can be annoying or downright painful, it may mean the site is unusable.

Web site designers employee as many tricks as they do good design practices to deal with this and still they can be beaten, how many people are still using Internet Explorer 6 and for how much longer?

In my work I spend quite a lot of time using different browsers, so I have Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3.5, Google Chrome and Opera all installed on my Windows desktop.

However, I don’t just use Windows, I also use linux. My Ubuntu 9.10 desktop comes with Firefox as the  default. I also have a netbook, which now runs Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10, thats Firefox too. Then there’s my PDA/Cell phone, a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, this has Windows Mobile 6.1 and comes with both Internet Explorer and Opera Mobile. Then there is my other cell phone, a little Nokia 6210 Navigator, that runs S60.

What I need is some continuity, a browser that, broadly speaking, is the same on all platforms. One that can be my browser of choice, the default, no matter which device I’m using and will, more or less, work the same, render the same (within the confines of the device, of course) and not be an annoyance to use.

You would think that my requirement shouldn’t be that big a deal, right? Well it is.

What if we dropped the pda/cell phones off the requirement? Well it doesn’t really help that much, our choice is pretty much Firefox. Google Chrome could be used but its not officially available on linux yet and besides I don’t want to drop my pda/cell phones from the requirement. I do accept that my requirement may be a minority request though.

So here is the requirement

• Must be able to download and install easily, no messing about with source, compiling, etc.
• Must support Windows Vista and Windows 7
• Must support Ubuntu 9.10 and Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10
• Must support Windows Mobile 6.1 on Sony Ericsson Xperia X1
• Must support S60 on Nokia 6210 Navigator
• Must render the sites I use in a usable manner
• Ideally share a common ‘cloud’ of bookmarks
• Nice if it handled email
• It MUST work, browsing should be an easy experience, not a chore.

Who are the candidates? I checked on wikipedia and this list seems to be

• Internet Explorer
• Safari
• Opera
• Chrome
• SeaMonkey
• Camino

Now this is just part of the whole list, trust me (or don’t and go look for yourself) there are a lot of browsers out there.

It doesn’t take long to whittle that lot down to one, in fact the only one that can support my requirement (and more besides). Opera seems to support almost everything out there in one of its forms, everything except the iPhone.

I’ve been using it now for the last 12 months or so and I am impressed, hell its even the browser on the Kid’s Nintendo Wii. In every day use I’ve had no real problems but I do come across the odd site that doesn’t want to render quite right, this is more to do with the site than the browser, however that means a switch to one of the others. Typically this is so rare that its not an issue, in fact its just as likely to occur with any of the browsers. Sometimes its more an issue of linux not supporting all of the rich web media as well as it could in most cases.

Opera also has Opera Link, this is a portal system that allows you to, among many other things, synchronize your bookmarks to a single account and share that account on each device. This means if I update a bookmark or a start page on my linux desktop when I come to log in on my Windows desktop the same change is there. This feature alone makes life so much easier, if it ever extends to the mobile version as well it will be fantastic.

Would I stop and use something else? Of course, if something else comes along and is better I will use it. This is about getting what I need from the browser, my requirement is what is important, not the tool used to deliver it.

Looks I was kinda right about the experia X10. Rumor is that it as the bands for AT&T but that doesn’t totally prove anything they might change it but if I was right then it should come sometime in the middle of next year.

Enquanto aguardamos a chegada do XPERIA X10 às lojas de todo o mundo, a Sony Ericsson vai fazendo mistério. Agora ela liberou algumas fotos e um vídeo feitos com a câmera do smartphone.

Como a Sony Ericsson costuma fazer alguns bons celulares com câmeras, carregando o  respeitoso selo Cyber-shot, era de se imaginar que a marca ia se orgulhar do resultado de imagens do XPERIA X10. O smartphone, com plataforma Android e configuração parruda, é a grande aposta da marca para 2010. E se você não lembra da cara e da configuração dele de cor, clique aqui.

I had read a few rumours about the X10 launch being brought forward, but it looks like it is getting more official…although Sony Ericsson don’t seem to have made any official press announcement.

The original launch date was set to be in Q1 2010 but varying reports, including a news item, in an industry magazine states that the pre-registration page on SE website is stating the release date is set to be in December…in time for Christmas?  Time will tell.

Sony Ericsson Scatenata.

Gli amici di Tecnozoom ci mostrano un interessante video in cui il relatore ufficiale di Sony mostra una serie di diapositive per il confronto con l’iPhone. Il nuovo nato di casa S.E. sembra surclassare in tutto il dispositivo della mela morsicata.

Quasi confermata anche la presenza della fotocamera frontale.

Intanto Sony Ericsson procede nel suo cammino e ha presentato un WebSDK per lo sviluppo di applicazioni HTML, CSS e Javascript. Dovrebbe permettere di realizzare applicazioni stand alone ma anche perfettamente integrate con Gps, Accelerometro e quant’altro.

L’SDK è compatibile con Android e Symbian per il momento e l’emulatore ha le skin dell’X10 e del Satio. Potete testare l’emulatore sul sito Dev Sony.

Forse a questo punto nonostante l’interfaccia pesantemente modificata conviene aspettare l’uscita sul mercato dell’X10?

La notizia forse più interessante è che il terminale viene annunciato a un prezzo inferiore ai 500 €! Altra ottima notizia per chi attende questo terminale è il fatto che nei vari video si inizia a vedere una reattività impressionante.

Appears that Sony Ericsson have made inroads optimizing the X10 Android phone for its 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The pre-pro handset shown earlier this month ran the Rachael interface in slow-motion, but this new prototype looks much more responsive.

The Timescape social networking app and Mediascape multimedia manager finally look like something you might want to get your hands on in February. No price or carrier info has come out yet. Not to be outdone and left off the smartphone boat, Sony has announced its own smartphone entry with the XPERIA X10. Included features are summarized nicely by Gizmodo.

With a 1GHz Snapdragon chip from Qualcomm, 4-inch capacitive touch display, an 8.1 megapixel camera, and the lovely Rachael Android UI, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 will be a great 2010 entry into the Android market for Sony Ericsson.

There seem to be some problems with it right now, though the model tested was only a pre-production build. Hopefully all of them will be ironed out by the time it hits the market and then, WATCH OUT, DROID! You will be having some stiff competition, indeed!

I must say that I am a fan of the design of the XPERIA. Nice curves, very aesthetically pleasing.

Sony Ericsson UK’s got a new pre-registration page for the Xperia X10, and along with it what appears to be a brand new, February 2010 expected launch. It’s hard to say for sure, but as far as we can tell this page is new, and last we heard the target window was a much broader “first half 2010.” Can’t say we’re anymore excited about this than before, but far be it for us to get in the way of a truly die hard fan community. At least you have a better idea of when to break the bank now.

With the X10 Sony Ericsson have gone from zero to hundred in a split second. While they may know their way around high-end devices, pulling off an undertaking such as the XPERIA X10 must have been a special challenge. And they have yet to get to the finish.

The thing is that Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 is the first Android smartphone by Sony Ericsson. It’s also a Snapdragon first for the company, and they’ve even come up with a first of its kind proprietary Android UI. Making the X10 a reality seems like a long way full of potential pitfalls for a company that hasn’t still recovered from its financial woes.

But the XPERIA X10 or Rachael, or X3, or whatever it has been called in the long months of development, seems like a device that’s worth all the hard work.

Even more so, X10 will not be a solitary device but more of a high-flying start for a full-blown platform of Android devices with their own distinct interface and user experience. That kinda sounds familiar. A year and a half ago, we were again there listening to Sony Ericsson presenting the XPERIA X1 in much the similar words. Well, let’s hope they’ll have better luck with starting off and developing this new part of their portfolio this time.

Como ya han hecho otros fabricantes (el último ha sido Motorola con su «Dext») también Sony Ericsson se ha decidido a pasarse al sistema operativo creado por Google, que se está expandiendo como la pólvora y que se ha convertido en una especie de «tabla de salvamento» para paliar las pérdidas de muchas empresas del sector. Y lo ha hecho con la nueva versión de su terminal más completo, el XPERIA, un auténtico ordenador de bolsillo con todas las funciones.

Para empezar, el X10 lleva incorporado el nuevo procesador Snapdragon, desarrollado por Qualcomm, una auténtica bestia de 1 GH que permite a un teléfono móvil alcanzar la rapidez y las prestaciones de un ordenador portátil y que además tiene un consumo muy reducido de energía que permite alargar la vida de la batería.

«Timescape»

Igual que han hecho otros fabricantes, con o sin Android, también Sony Ericcson ha desarrollado un software propio de «experiencia de usuario», llamado UX, que permite la integración de todo el entretenimiento y las redes sociales en una sola pantalla del terminal.

Es el caso de «Timescape» una aplicación desarrollada por Sony Ericcson y que promete ser capaz de gestionar en un mismo lugar todas las comunicaciones de una persona, ya sean a través de mensajes como por correo electrónico, o en cualquier red social. Una funcionalidad que podemos encontrar ya en los últimos terminales de otros fabricantes, como en los nuevos Palm Pre, HTC Hero y Tatoo y Motorola Dext.

Sin embargo, Sony ha ampliado esas funciones de «agrupación» también al ámbito multimedia con un nuevo software, «Mediascape», de forma que el nuevo XPERIA X10 permitirá reunir en una sola pantalla toda la música, las fotos y los vídeos que tenga el usuario y sin importar de dónde vengan: YouTube, usuarios particulares o servicios de fotografías on line.

Sistema de reconocimiento facial

En cuanto a fotografía y vídeo, el fabricante ha incluído en el terminal una poderosa cámara de 8,1 megapixeles, con sistema de reconocimiento facial (hasta cinco rostros en una misma foto) y la posibilidad de conectar las imágenes automáticamente con la agenda de contactos. La cámara dispone de un zoom digital de hasta 16x, autofocus, estabilizador de imagen y vídeo, geo etiquetado y envío directo a cualquier servicio de almacenamiento de fotos o vídeos de internet.

El terminal permite agregar todas las comunicaciones y el entretenimiento en una única pantalla con sólo pulsar el botón «Infinite».

Tras el desembarco de Sony Ericcsson con Android, parece ser que sólo el número uno de los fabricantes de móviles, Nokia, se sigue resistiendo al encanto del sistema operativo de Google. Además, por supuesto, de Apple y la ya citada Palm, que apuestan fuerte por sus propios sistemas operativos.

Si lo que Sony Ericsson quería era impresionar con su nuevo Sony Ericsson X10 y su potencia gráfico, tengo que decir que para nada lo ha logrado. El nuevo Xperia X10 integra un procesador Snapdragon de 1GHz, Android y una potencia gráfica que suponemos la saca de la librería OpenGL|ES 2.0, pero en esta demostración, con el juego Speed Forge 3D (disponible en Android Market) lo veo más bien como cualquier otro terminal que pueda ejecutar juegos.

Buenas noticias en el frente de los smartphones producidos por Sony Ericsson deja de una vez por todas Windows Mobile y se pasa a Android como sistema operativo para el nuevo XPERIA X10 que fue anunciado.

En cuanto a características técnicas llama bastante la atención por usar un procesador Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 de 1GHz que seguramente lo hará una de las terminales más veloces del mercado, 256MB de RAM, tendrá pantalla táctil AMOLED de 4 pulgadas, con resolución de 480 x 854 píxeles, cámara de 8 megapixeles, A-GPS, Bluetooth, HSDPA/HSPA, Wi-Fi y demás características estándares en smartphones.

En cuanto a la interfaz gráfica, Sony Ericsson ha decidido seguir el mismo camino que HTC y Motorola haciendo una versión personalizada de la interfaz gráfica para adaptarala a sus equipos. Personalmente no termina de gustarme, me parece que está más enfocada en verse bien que en funcionar bien, pero esas serán conclusiones a las que lleguemos cuando tengamos un equipo en mano y podamos reseñarlo para ustedes.

Desta vez quem ataca com mais um Android é a Sony Ericsson. O modelo em questão é o XPERIA x10. O modelo foi anunciado nos EUA e conta com uma configuração de respeito.

Well this is a beautiful handset, the Sony Xperia X10 has been officially announced and is expected in the first half of 2010.

If you’re looking for an alternative to the iPhone then this is a great contender. It’s Sony’s first handset running on the Google Android OS and they have done an outstanding job of skinning and customizing it. With exclusive applications like Mediascape and Timescape Sony has really put a lot into making sure the user experience is unlike any other Android device.
