Trotz der guten Ergebnisse muss man sich jedoch über eines im Klaren sein: Eine gute Multimediaperformance heißt noch lange nicht unbeschränkt spielefähig, was auch für das Dell XPS M1330 zutrifft. So konnten im Doom 3 und Fear Praxistest gute Ergebnisse bei niedrigeren Auflösungen und Details eingefahren werden, schraubt man die Anforderungen jedoch etwas hoch, so geht die Grafikkarte aber auch relativ schnell in die Knie. Speziell bei neuen Computer Games wird das XPS dann schnell an seine Leistungsgrenzen stoßen.

Das Dell XPS M1330 Notebook ist mit drei verschieden großen hp pavilion dv2000 Akkus erhältlich. Zu den beiden bündig in das Gehäuse passenden 4- und 6-Zellen Akkus gesellt sich auch ein deutlich größerer 9-Zellen Akku, der dann aber deutlich über die gesamte Gehäusebreite hinweg übersteht und sich auch mit einem Zusatzgewicht von 170g im Vergleich zur 6 Zellen Version bemerkbar macht.

Hinsichtlich Mobilität sollte man auf jedem Fall mindestens zur 56Wh 6 Zellen Version greifen, mit der auch die folgenden Laufzeitmessungen durchgeführt wurden.

Die 4 Zellen Version kommt eher für Gewichtsfetischisten in Frage, compaq presario v3000 akku denen es um jedes Gramm Gewichtsersparnis geht. Auch die WLAN Laufzeit, im Energiesparmodus mit Helligkeit auf Stufe 6 (eine Stufe unter Maximum, Bild immer noch gut lesbar) fällt mit etwa 3 Stunden ganz passabel aus.

Die Laufzeiten der anderen verfügbaren Akkus kann man mit etwa minus 50% (4 Zellen, 37Wh) bzw. plus 50% (9 Zellen, 85Wh) hochrechnen.

Das Touchpad weist die bei praktisch allen Dell Geräten auffallenden dell akku positiven Eigenschaften auf. Dazu gehört eine angenehm zu bedienende Oberfläche, optisch gekennzeichnete Scrollbereiche und die beiden weich zu druckenden Touchpadtasten.

Die Zusatztastenleiste rechts oberhalb der Tastatur wurde mit blauen LEDs sehr schön in Szene gesetzt. Beim Einschalten des Notebooks leuchten die einzelnen Tasten nacheinander auf und zeigen den “KITT” Effekt, dessen rotes Lauflicht in die TV Geschichte einging.

Für das XPS M1330 hat Dell zurzeit 2 verschiedene Displayvarianten im sony laptop akku Angebot. Dell’s slimmest laptop ever still isn’t shipping out to eager consumers, but at least the Win7-packin’Adamo XPS is now configurable over on the outfit’s website. The base $1,799 configuration includes a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo SU9400 CPU, a 128GB solid state drive, 13.4-inch WLED panel, 2 megapixel camera, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, GS45 integrated graphics, WiFi and a USB Ethernet adapter. Unfortunately, hardly any of the components are upgradable, but there are a few select upgrades available for those with the cheddar. The scary part? That December 22nd estimated ship date. Better spring for overnight and cross those toes!

Sleep Mode

What always bugged me on laptops was sleep mode. Windows, Ubuntu – there were always some issues with laptop going to/from sleep mode. My XPS laptop on several occasions nearly caused fire because I was too lazy to wait until it did go to sleep mode and unfortunately it did not. When I got home laptop was so hot that I had problems to grab it with my hands.

The same happened with other laptops. Not with MacBook. Going to sleep mode takes couple of seconds and the same with waking up. I know this depends on the number and type of applications open. All I can say is that I am extremely happy with sleep mode on MacBook.

Docking Station

I typically use my laptop with external monitor, keyboard and mouse. In the past I used Dell docking stations that worked very well for me. Connecting laptop to all devices was just a matter of plugging it into docking stations. Sure there were some issues like XPS when running Ubuntu was docked in, it just froze. However, this is small inconvenience compared to all benefits that docking station provides.

Apples does not sell any docking station, not that I am aware of . I was some 3rd party docking stations however those looked more like “spanish boots” from medieval ages used to torture people that a device that is supposed to make your life easier. One part that I really miss about MacBook – decent docking stations. Not a big disadvantage in the world of bluetooth, WiFi and wireless devices.  All you really need to plug-in is power and display.

Battery Life, Temperature

Sweet. So far I was able to use laptop running on batteries for anywhere between 5 to 7 hours. I am using WiFi, here and there bluetooth.  No intense crunching etc. I mostly use 9400 graphics. Battery life degrades when using 9600 graphics and also laptop warmed up a little bit. But still remains very impressive compared to other models. Other than that MacBook runs pretty cool, can barely hear any noise. Compared to my previous laptops (those were using 7,200 rpm drives), it is very quiet.

WiFi

WiFi is the only area where I am experiencing problems. I use Linksys WBR-2310. I get disconnected while working and I have to disable AirPort and then enable it back and I am connected again. I don’t want to jump into conclusions here because I am not sure where the problem is. Maybe this would be a good reason to talk to Apple support. I am sure I don’t have this problem with XPS and iPhone. Maybe my wireless router is acting up and it’s time to replace it with newer model.

Update: Finally decided to do something about annoying problem with WiFi. All problems disappeared when the latest version of the firmware was downloaded and installed.

Ahhh, the Dell Studio XPS 1340.  It is a sight to behold.  Slick piano black, with a leather accent.  That gorgeous LED backlit screen.  That white-led backlit keyboard!  What’s not to like?  I, like many others, fell in love and right into the trap that this Black Widow of the laptop world had set.

I bought this laptop when it first came out approximately 6 months ago (from time of posting).  When I finally received the laptop, it was indeed gorgeous, but I encountered problems almost immediately.  Lock-ups, freezing, long boot times, and media touch buttons not working were just a few of the issues.

I tried updating the BIOS, reformatting the hard drive, etc., but the problems persisted, and it was clear they were related to hardware and heat.  Since this is an XPS laptop, you get Dell’s top-tier customer service, which roughly translates into an Indian who speaks with a British accent, vs. a Bangladesh accent.  If you think that is a racist comment, call Dell support and then hit me back and let me know how you feel.

Of course the root issue is not about race or accent, it’s about quality and locality.  Good customer service is an art.  Cultural and relational abilities are important.  It shouldn’t be outsourced half way around the world to a company where employee turnover is worse than a fast food joint.  What does this company have to do with your business?  Do you think they are invested in the perception and protection of your brand?  Of course they aren’t.  They don’t care, and customers don’t just know it… they feel it.

Look folks, it’s simple.  If I were in India, and I called tech support for an Indian company and got somebody in Kansas who had no idea what I was talking about (and couldn’t understand me), I’d be equally pissed.  There isn’t a single sane person in the world who thinks Dell’s customer service and tech support is awesome.  Not one.   In fact, when you call Dell support, it’s widely known that 3 things are guaranteed to happen:

1. You will lose 4 hours of your life.  Minimum.
2. You will explain your problem no less than 6 times.
3. You will be talking to the “wrong person” no less than 5 times.

Throughout your excellent customer service experience, be prepared for multiple transfers, hold placings, huge servings of frustration, and a kick in the balls at the end.  Welcome to Dell, thanks for calling.

Alas, I digress.  After the tech support merry-go-round, Dell finally dispatched a tech guru to my house to fix the heat issue (who admitted he “sees these all the time… they all suck”).  What they did was replace the stock heat pipes and fan with the exact same parts.  Good one.  Of course the fix didn’t work, so 2 weeks later, another tech was back to replace the entire motherboard and bottom assembly. Yet another 2 weeks later and I’m back on the phone with Dell, begging them for my money back.  No dice.

An email to Michael Dell yielded a better response.  After some bullshit haggling they finally agreed to build me a brand new Studio XPS 1340 replacement laptop.  Not a refurb, but a NEW one.  Awesome.  The laptop is here a few weeks later, and I’m typing this post on it.

Not all is well in replacement-land, however.  The media buttons still “freeze up” and become useless.  The laptop runs a bit cooler, but you still can’t use it on your lap if you hope to reproduce someday.  Even worse is that to a certain extent, I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop.  I know it’s only a matter of time before the other problems set right back in again… the overheating, the freezing, and the gallons of frustration.  The anticipation of failure is perhaps the most unique thing about this laptop.  I just can’t trust it to be there for me.  Betrayal of trust is the #1 sin that laptop manufacturers need to avoid if they hope to retain their customers.  Though it hasn’t happened 100% yet, I know it’s coming.  Until then, I know one thing is for sure…  The Dell Studio XPS 1340 sucks balls.

Do yourself a favor… Get a MacBook Pro and put Windows 7 on it.  Butter.  And in the off-chance something does go wrong, you can walk right in to an Apple store, look the employee in the eye, and explain to them what is wrong.  And they’ll understand you.  No transfers.  Priceless.  And if that doesn’t work, you can punch them in the face right then and there.  You can’t punch a face through the phone.  Food for thought.

Online web searching has become an integral part of everyone’s lives, and it has become a key way to advertise companies and products. Pricewaterhousecoopers estimated that online searching made up 47% of online advertising in Western Europe in 2008. With over 4 billion search page views in May 2009 in the UK alone, it is obvious that Google firmly holds the main market share of all internet search engines.

Using Google, accessing my companies website is very easy. When I type in Dell to Googles main search bar, it automatically detects that my IP address is in the UK, therefore gives me Google UK, and also gives me Dell’s UK website as the first result. The second result is Dell UK’s laptop section of their website, and the third result is Dell’s main .com website.

I use Mozilla Firefox with the Adblock Plus add on, therefore I do not get any of the paid for advertisements on any websites including Google. This means that Google are loosing out on lots of potential advert clicks as Adblock Plus is one of Firefox’s most popular and most downloaded add ons. When I perform the same search on an unmodified version of Apple’s Safari, I get more ‘Sponsored Results’.

If I take 2 of Dell’s most popular brands, the Inspiron and the XPS, and type them into Google (on Safari), again I get many results linking to Dell directly, but I get more sponsored links to sites which claim to offer discounts on the computers.

I have been using Microsoft OneNote 2007 ever since it was released, as I was using its predecessor, OneNote 2003. OneNote is a highly flexible note taking software, which can help you sort and organize information without putting too much effort into layout. Just paste, send, or drag-and-drop nearly any content from any kind of application into it and an editable, indexed copy will remain in your notebook. It was the most innovative software I had seen from Microsoft in years and it is highly useful for any brainstorming or research activities on the internet. I use it next to daily for years now. Only recently have I seen more impressive software (& service) by Microsoft in the form of LiveMesh.

If anybody is using OneNote 2007 in a Microsoft Windows Vista 64 bit enviroment (possibly also Microsoft Windows XP 64 bit) they will notice that the virtual printer is missing, which enables users to send print-outs from any program with printer capability to OneNote. This issue has been discussed by the OneNote developers and widely criticized by OneNote users. This is due to the lack of 64bit support of the Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI) component.

This feature is based on OCR’ing from a .tiff file if I understand it right. So basically you run OneNote with a command line switch pointing it to any .tiff file, and OneNote will automatically OCR this file and add it to the unfiled notes section. So we need to create a .tiff file and automate the process of opening OneNote with the correct command line switch. A long time ago I saw a solution with a commercial virtual printer, similar to PDF creation solutions, by Niels Kaiser. So I thought the same should be possible with the open source and more importantly free PDF Creator. I have been using this solution for maybe a year now but never got around to documenting it. So here it goes:

1) Install PDF creator with the command line switch /UseINI, so you can use different .ini configuration files.

2) Create a new printer using any printer driver installed.

2.1) Launch the properties dialog of the newly created printer. (If you got UAC running, you’ll need to do it as Administrator)

2.1) Go to the drivers section and select PDF Creator as driver.

2.2) Go to the ports section and select PDF Creator.

2.3) Click configure below the ports selection and under command line switches put the following

-PPDFCREATORPRINTER -OptionsFile”E:\Eigene Dateien\shared\PDFCreator\PDFCreator_onennote.ini”

Of course, you can change the path to point to wherever you want to put your .ini file containing the configuration for PDF Creator.

3) Create an .ini file in the path specified. I suggest copying the default “PDFCreator.ini” file, found in your user folder (“C:\Users\SOMEONE\AppData\Roaming\PDFCreator”) to another folder.

3.1) Open the .ini file and change the following properties:

Of course you should change the paths specified as needed. Alternatively you can copy and paste my config (I could only attach as .doc) into your .ini file, provided you have the same paths as me.

If you are looking for a different solution to this particular problem, you could go stick to a 32 bit OS or try the XPS solution put forward by David Rasmussen, one of the OneNote developers long after the release. I for one have never tried his solution since I already had a working one.

Of course you can always try different products, and the biggest competitor to my knowledge is Evernote. I fiddled with it some time ago, but prefered OneNote for the tight integration with other Microsoft products, namely Internet Explorer and Outlook, though Evernote does have some other advantages over OneNote. You can find a more detailed comparison here. But recently I’ve been looking into Evernote again, mostly because of their impressive iPhone application. The only comparable solution to accessing and using my notes on the go I found for OneNote was MobileNoter, which, for me, simply didn’t work – but maybe it will work in your system.

Okay, I love Farmville. I’m the first to admit that I will plan outings based on what time my crops will be ready to harvest. Can’t let the strawberries die, after all. And I absolutely L-O-V-E-D the Halloween gear that the programmers created. However, the whole Roswell thing is leaving me a bit puzzled. I would have expected turkeys and mums to go along with the pumpkins. Green cows, on the other hand, were far from my Farmville imagination. There are still no dogs in Farmville, but I have an elephant and a green cow? I want a dog, damn it! A dog is a natural addition to a farm. Elephants, on the other hand…not so much.

The black cat was appropriate to Halloween. And cats live on farms. They catch mice and drink the cows’ milk. That made sense. But the whole elephant thing threw me. An elephant on a farm before a dog? Really? Are dogs that hard to program?

I’m on Level 36 now and I’m just doing my best to save up for the villa. I had stopped wanting one, but what else am I going to do on Level 36? There are some ribbons left so that makes it a little more worth my while, but the new crops aren’t more profitable than the old crops so why would I ever plant one more than once to see what it looks like? Curiosity killed the cat.

Peas are still the best. You get 3 XPs for a one-day crop. And they yield a large profit too. And now that I’ve mastered the peas, I get additional XPs when I harvest some of them. That’s one up-side to the mastery thing.

Get me a dog! On Farmville. That’s all I’m asking. Please. I’m begging.
