Is it possible that the Mac is making inroads with Enterprise IT? Intel Capital announced at CEO Summit that it is leading a Series A investment round in Active Storage of Torrance, CA, which builds high-performance storage solutions for the Mac platform. Other investors in this round include Mission Ventures and Valhalla Partners. Intel Capital invests in companies that drive demand for Intel (s intc) products, but it also looks to make money and apparently it sees money in enterprise-class solutions for the Mac.

Active Storage was born out of Apple’s decision to discontinue the Xserve RAID. Alex Grossman, CEO of Active Storage, and the other founders were previously executives in the Servers and Storage products group at Apple, Inc. They left to form their own company that would produce storage solutions of the same quality. While Apple has been pitching the Promise VTrack RAID as a replacement solution, Active Storage has developed its XRAID product line to be a lot more Mac-like with brilliant Mac-native management software. This is high-end gear for serious business — fibre-channel, redundant controllers, redundant power supplies, redundant cooling, etc — with an emphasis on performance. The XRAID comes in two flavors, the original XRAID with 16TB capacity expandable to 32TB and the XRAID ES with 4TB, expandable to 16TB.

All of this power is wrapped in a sexy package that feels very Apple like. The folks at Active Storage have put a lot of care into building enclosures with no sharp edges, tapered screws that sit flush with the chassis, thick gauge aluminum, and slick handles on the drive sleds that pop out with a light touch. I had a chance to take a look at the XRAID at Macworld Expo in January and the build quality on these units is astounding. Having been in a data center or two in my life, finding a polished product where attention has been given to every detail to make it simple to access from both the front and the back of the rack is a real joy. One of the coolest pieces is an iPhone monitoring app that gives you all the details you could want on how the XRAID is performing even when you are not near the data center. This is definitely a storage solution fit for a Mac.

The extreme ease of use in a Mac environment has made Active Storage popular in the entertainment crowd. When asked to explain further, Mr. Grossman explained that, “You may not know this because you aren’t in working with these systems every day, but feature-length movie production requires 50 to 100TB of storage. And that need doesn’t go away when the movie is finished either. There is a need for long-term archival storage as well. And it doesn’t always make sense to use tape backup, so disk-to-disk archiving is growing.”

Final Cut has made the Mac platform a common choice for film editing with some feature films like King Kong being composited and edited entirely on Macs. With the advent of HD, the storage needs for films are growing astronomically. Active Storage appears to be positioned to take advantage of that trend. It makes a great hardware solution in conjunction with Apple products like the Xserve, Final Cut Server, and Xsan 2.

The company currently has about 25 employees, but about 50 open positions on its web site. It is obviously looking to grow substantially in 2010, especially with this capital available to fund hiring and product development.

It is great news to see a well-respected investment fund like Intel Capital place bets on the Mac market, especially in a company that is focused on enterprise-class solutions for the Mac.

The process of coding a brand new website is well it’s way.  Each page comes together faster the one before as I become more skilled with the web design programs and create more of my own sample code to draw from. It’s like developing a repertoire of pieces of code for various site elements.

Also I am witching my domain name off my current hosting service and onto a new server which will host it. A file sharing interface allows me to upload site files such as html code files and images to the new server remotely, but I have not started this process yet and the site is still in the early stages of development. In a related project I will be installed a new, much larger hard drive which will run a modern Linux with a mac os x interface. The theory here is to slowly convert my home laptop into a desktop one component at a time starting with the hard drive. Once I get my new netbook set up there will be no point in having a home laptop.

Apple hat gestern ein Update der LOM Firmware für die Xserves (Early 2008) veröffentlicht. Das Update erhöht die Versionsnummer auf 1.2 und behebt Fehler  mit dem Lights-Out-Management, das bei der Überwachung der Stromversorgung und Lüfter zu Problemen führen konnte. Nach dem Update, das Mac OS 10.5.6 zwingend verlangt, sollte sich die Lights-Out-Management-Versionsnummer auf 1.1.2 belaufen. Das Update kann hier heruntergeladen werden.

Die Auswahl an Macs ist groß, doch welcher ist für mich geeignet? Wir möchten Euch genau bei dieser Frage mit der Übersicht an Mac-Modellen helfen.

Bei jedem neu gekauften Mac ist das Betriebssystem Mac OS 10.5 Leopard vorinstalliert und auf CD beigelegt. Ebenfalls enthalten ist iLife 09 – die Multimedia-Suite, mit der das Sortieren von Bildern, erstellen von Filmen und DVDs sowie das Komponieren von Musik möglich ist. Wir lassen die Xserves bei unserer Übersicht außen vor. Die Server von Apple sprechen zum einen nur einen relativ kleinen Interessentenbereich an und sind nur für den professionellen Einsatz geeignet. Wir verweisen deshalb nur auf die Site des Xserves im Apple Online Store.

Desktop-Macs

Der kleine Mac aus dem Hause Apple verfügt über 2 bzw 2,26 GHz. Die Grafikkarte ist die Nvidia GeForce 9400 M mit 128 MB RAM oder 256 MB shared Memory (Grafikkarte nutzt den Arbeitsspeicher mit). Die Festplatten kann man wahlweise mit 120, 250 oder 320 GB auswählen. Standardmäßig wir der Mini mit 1 bzw. 2 GB RAM, je nach Modell ausgeliefert.  Ein SuperDrive ist ebenfalls eingebaut. AirPort, Bluetooth, sowie ein Ethernet-Anschluss sind vorhanden. Ein FireWire 800 Anschluss und fünf USB 2.0-Anschlüsse warten auf das Einstecken von Drucker, Scanner usw.. Ein Mini-DVI sowie Mini-Displayport-Anschluss lädt zum Anschließen des Apple Cinema Displays ein.

Der Mini eignet sich perfekt als Einstiegs-Mac. Gerade der Preis sowie die Dimensionen machen ihn zu einem interessanten Computer. Abstriche muss man jedoch bei der Ausstattung in Kauf nehmen. So ist weder eine Tastatur, noch Maus dabei. Auch ein Bildschirm sowie WebCam (Apple nennt diese iSight) fehlt.  Gerade das schlanke und in sich stimmige Design machen den Mini zu einem wahren Eye-Catcher.

Der beliebteste Desktop-Mac von Apple gibt es mit den Bildschirmauflösungen von 20‘’ und 24‘’.  Kann wahlweise mit 2.66, 2.93 oder 3.06 GHz Prozessoren sowie 2 bzw 4 GB RAM (möglich sind bis zu 8 GB RAM ) ausgestattet werden. Die Festplatte ist mit 320, 540 und 1 TB erweiterbar.  Die Grafikkarte variiert von der Nvidia Geforce 9400 M im Einstiegs-iMac über die Nvidia Geforce GT 120 und 130 bis hin zur ATI Radeon HD 4850. Der iMac hat Lautsprecher sowie ein Superdrive integriert. Ein FireWire 800 Anschluss und Sechs USB 2.0 Anschlüsse (2 davon an der Tastatur) werden bereit gestellt. In der Ausstattung enthalten ist eine Tastatur (mit oder ohne Zahlenblock, wahlweise auch eine Wireless-Tastatur), sowie eine Maus (wahlweise auch als kabellose Version erhältlich). Der iMac ist das Rundum-Paket und ist für die meisten Nutzer das Optimum aus Leistung und Kompaktheit. Gerade die Dimensionen des iMacs wissen zu beeindrucken. Auch die Leistung lässt sich sehen und reicht für die meisten Aufgaben als Privatuser aus. Auch Spiele stellen für den iMac keine Probleme dar.

Der Mac Pro ist der derzeit schnellste Mac. Er wird mit einem Quad-Core (4 Kerne) Prozessor mit 2.66 oder 2.93 GHz sowie als mit 2 x 4 Kernen mit 2.26, 2.66 oder 2.93 GHz angeboten.  Standardmäßig sind 2 bzw. 4 GB RAM verbaut, können jedoch auf bis zu 32 GB erweitert werden. Als Grafikkarte wird die Geforce GT 120 mit 512 MB, oder die Radeo HD 4870 mit 512 angeboten, die auch mehrfach in ein System verbaut werden können. Eine Airportkarte muss extra dazugekauft werden. Bluetooth, sowie zwei Ethernet-Anschlüsse sind vorhanden. Es können wahlweise bis zu 4 Festplatten mit 640 GB oder 1 TB ( = 1000 GB) eingebaut werden.  Ein 16x SuperDrive ist ebenfalls enthalten. 5 USB Anschlüsse (3 auf der Rückseite, 2 auf der Frontseite),  4 Firewire-Anschlüsse (2 vorne, 2 hinten), optisch-digitaler Audionein- und ausgang sind vorhanden (Toslink-Anschlüsse). Ein Mini-Displayport-Anschluss lädt zum Anschließen des Apple Cinema Displays ein.

In der Ausstattung enthalten ist eine Tastatur (mit oder ohne Zahlenblock, wahlweise auch eine Wireless-Tastatur), sowie eine Maus (wahlweise auch als kabellose Version erhältlich). Der Mac Pro ist das Zugpferd der Macs. Kein anderer Mac ist derzeit so schnell wie ein Mac Pro, was sich zum einem im Preis niederschlägt, zum anderen, aber auch im von Apple auserkornen Verwendungszweck wiederspiegelt. So soll der Mac Pro vor allem im Geschäftsbereich verwendet werden, wo hohe Leistung gefordert und erwartet wird. Beim Mac Pro ist kein Display enthalten, dies muss separat gekauft werden.

Mobile Macs

Das Macbook wird mit 2.0 oder 2.4 GHz ausgeliefert. Besitzt 2 GB RAM, der auf bis zu 4 GB erweitert werden kann. Eine 160, 250 oder 320 GB – Festplatte kann ausgewählt werden. Optional ist auch eine 128 oder 256 GB SSD-Festplatte verbaut werden. Als Grafikkarte wird die Geforce 9400 M mit 256 MB shared Memory (Grafikkarte nutzt den Arbeitsspeicher mit) verwendet. Ein SuperDrive, eine iSight, sowie Airport, Bluetooth und ein Ethernet-Anschluss und 2 USB-Anschlüsse sind vorhanden. Das Macbook verfügt über ein Unibody-Gehäuse, d. h. das Grundkörper wurde aus einem Stück Aluminium gefräst und ist so widerstandsfähiger und stabiler gegen Fremdeinwirkungen von außen. Das Display misst 13.3‘’ und wird mit LEDs beleuchtet. Das Macbook erreicht eine Akkulaufzeit von bis zu 5 Stunden.

Das Macbook ist meist der Einstieg zu Apple und Mac überhaupt. Mobilität und gute Leistung zu einem guten Preis steht hier im Vordergrund. Das Design ist sehr ansprechend und die Verarbeitung setzt Maßstäbe. Der mobile Mac schlecht hin.

Das Macbook Pro wird mit einem 15“ oder 17“ Display ausgeliefert. Beim 17“ Modell kann wahlweise auch ein mattes Display bestellt werden. Beide Versionen können mit 2.4, 2.66 oder 2,93 GHz ausgerüstet werden. Der RAM kann von 2 bis 4 GB aufgewertet werden, beim 17“ Modell sind sogar 8 GB möglich. Bei der Grafikkarte ist neben der Geforce 9400 M eine Geforce 9600 M enthalten, die wahlweise dazugeschaltet werden kann. Die Geforce 9600 M ist in zwei Versionen erhältlich: mit 256 MB oder 512 MB. Die Festplatte  kann mit bis zu 320 GB ausgestattet werden. Das Macbook Pro ist am besten für Arbeitsfelder geeignet, wo hohe Leistung im mobilen Umfeld gefragt ist. Beide Modelle bietet die Leistung eines Desktop-Macs. Derzeit gibt es keine schnelleren Macs für den mobilen Einsatz.

Das Macbook Air ist mit 1,6 oder 1,86 GHz ausgestattet. Der RAM ist fest mit 2 GB verbaut. Die Festplatte ist mit 120 GB eingebaut. Optional kann eine SSD-Festplatte mit 128 GB verbaut werden. Die Grafikkarte ist eine etwas langsamer getaktete Geforce 9400 M, um eine zu große Wärmeentwicklung zu vermeiden. Als Anschlüsse sind ein USB, ein Audioausgang, sowie ein Mini-Displayport vorhanden.

Das Macbook Air wird ohne SuperDrive ausgeliefert. Dies kann separat gekauft werden.

Das Air ist das Sahnestückchen von Apple. Es bietet wenig Anschlüsse nach außen an. Apple umgeht das Fehlen des SuperDrives mit dem WLAN Zugriff auf ein Laufwerk in einem Mac oder PC. Die Software hierzu wird auf der Installations-CD des Airs mitgeliefert. Auch die Dünne des Macbooks fasziniert immer wieder aufs neue. Die Prozessor- und Grafikkartengeschwindigkeit sind jedoch nicht für Spieler geeignet. Der Anwendungsbereich liegt mehr im E-Mail-Schreiben, Surfen und Textverarbeitung. Als Einstiegs- oder Basismac ist das Air leider nicht zum Empfehlen, da es mit zu wenigen Anschlüssen ausgestattet ist. Als mobilen Zweitmac zum Desktop-Mac macht es aber durchaus Sinn.

Como siempre que se cierra la Apple Store, todos los blogs maqueros del mundo saltan de emoción (ChilenoMac no es la excepción) esperando la nueva sorpresa que nos preparan desde Cupertino; como buenos fans (guste o no al resto del mundo) nos entretiene esperar lo nuevo de Apple, para comentarlo y desearlo… y eventualmente comprarlo. Esta vez la novedad viene desde la línea de servidores Xserve, que se ve remozada con los flamantes procesadores Xeon ‘Nehalem’ de Intel y promete el doble de rendimiento con respecto a la generación anterior. Como siempre, los chicos de Cupertino no se andan con chicas…

El Xserve se está ofreciendo en dos configuraciones básicas, una con un procesador Quad-Core corriendo a 2.26 GHz, sumado a 3 GB de RAM a 1066 MHz, 160 GB de almacenamiento, una GeForce GT 120 y una licencia de Mac OS X Server 10.5, todo esto por el módico precio de $2999 USD. La otra versión trae lo mismo, pero en vez de un Quad-Core, trae dos. El precio -por supuesto- se empina hasta los $3599 USD. Apple promete, como les decía más arriba, el doble de rendimiento en un equipo de consumo más bajo y respetuoso con el medio ambiente.

Estoy seguro de que los nuevos Xserve son fenomenales, y que cumplirán a cabalidad su tarea como servidores de cualquier estación de trabajo que los requiera, pero… ¿no será mucho el precio? Tres mil dólares por la configuración básica del Xserve me parece demasiado, y dudo que en estos tiempos una empresa quiera decantarse por esta opción teniendo en cuenta el enorme desembolso inicial de dinero. Es cierto que el ahorro posterior de dinero compensará el gasto, pero cuando hay crisis el ‘dinero suelto’ no es mucho, así que la opción se invalida.

Otro buen equipo opacado por el precio… ¿cuando entenderá Apple?

Es kann optional ein SSD-Laufwerk hinzugefügt werden, was nochmals eine deutliche Leistungssteigerung mit sich bringt. Auch die Stromspareffizienz lässt keine Wünsche offen durch die verbesserte Architektur. Auch mit Blick auf die Umwelt hat Apple alle gängigen Standards erfüllt und setzt hier neue Maßstäbe. Der neue Xserve dürfte die Herzen so einiger Admins und Webserverbetreiber höher schlagen lassen.
