Thunar is the default file manager for Xubuntu’s Xfce desktop environment, and is as stable in

Thunar is the default file manager for Xubuntu’s Xfce desktop environment, and is as stable in Ubuntu as the default app, Nautilus (especially since Xfce uses a lot from Gnome anyway). In many ways, you can’t tell the two programs apart, but for a time Thunar was way ahead of Gnome’s file manager. That’s not just because of advanced features like custom actions you could add, but because of the various views you could have. For example, for newbies tentatively moving away from Windows, the Tree view in the side pane is assuringly similar to Windows Explorer.

While Nautilus has certainly caught up, with being able to add to context menus via actions, and 6 different views for the side pane, Thunar is still worth installing because you can get the best of both worlds. You can leave Nautilus with the Places pane on the left and “Icon View” (thumbnails) on the right, and for when you want to browse via a Tree pane with “Compact List” icons (“List View” in Windows Explorer), you can open Thunar.

Also, unlike with Nautilus, you can still access the defined shortcuts (usually available via the left pane) while in Tree view by clicking a button at the end of the address bar. If you are thinking Thunar might be good to have as a backup in case Nautilus is having problems (which it is), but prefer it to look like Nautilus, then you can always change things back to how you like them (change the Tree pane to Shortcuts).

If you like this idea, but are thinking the icons in “Compact List” view are too small, you can always make them bigger (seen above), via the View menu, or zoom with your scroll wheel.

If you look at the pics, you’ll see some minor differences between the two file managers. Firstly, while Thunar uses the same icons for toolbar buttons that Nautilus does (they both get them from the current icon theme), Thunar’s are bigger (which I personally like). You’ll also note from the second pic that in your home folder (and elsewhere), hidden folders and files are listed first.

Other things worth mentioning are the differences between thumbnails and folder settings between the two, and that the Thunar context (right-click) menu will probably have less entries than you’re used to (though you should get “Open Terminal Here“ by default, while with Nautilus you have to install a package to get “Open in Terminal“).

Lastly, since the Information pane in Nautilus is rather useless right now when it comes to info, you can use Thunar to get more info at a glance than Nautilus can offer. For example, when you’re in your ~/Pictures folder and what to know the size in pixels of certain images, you generally need to right-click each file and view the info via Properties > Image. But with Thunar, all you have to do is click each file and look at the bottom to the info displayed on the status bar (which can be enabled via the View menu if it is missing).

So you could even do what I did: set up Thunar to display over-sized icons in “Icons” view, and then create a panel launcher to have your ~/Pictures folder open in Thunar (the command for such a launcher would be: thunar /home/yourusername/Pictures). That way, you don’t have to mess with icon size in Nautilus, but still get really large thumbnails of all your pictures, as well as info on dimensions presented in the status bar.

To install Thunar, as well as select some plugins for installation, simply search for “thunar” in Synaptic. Or you can install the program and all related plugins via the terminal:

sudo apt-get install thunar thunar-media-tags-plugin thunar-volman thunar-thumbnailers thunar-archive-plugin

To get more info about the plugins, simply paste their names (individually) into the Quick search field in Synaptic.

The default “view” in both Nautilus and Thunar file managers is the “Icon“ or thumbnail view, which you can of course change if ever you want via the View menu. If you’re happy with thumbnails, but they’re too big for your liking, or you actually want to make them larger, like in your ~/Pictures folder, hold the Ctrl button while you zoom in or out with your mouse scroll wheel.

In Nautilus (the default file manager in Ubuntu), you can make the thumbnails of pics rather huge, like only 2 fitting in each row, and the icons for any folders in there won’t be too large. On top of that, the change will only be recorded in the folder you’re in, so you can have most of your folders displaying thumbnails at the default size, have a few where the thumbnails are quite small, and then have huge thumbnails for folders like ~/Pictures.

In Thunar (Xubuntu’s default file manager), you can only go so big, and in your ~/Pictures folder the icons for any folders in there might actually look bigger than the thumbnails for pics; also, do that to one folder, and it is a global change (ie: it happens to the rest).

Well, I had to see what all the fuss was about. The award-winning, super-easy KDE interface for Linux is indeed beautiful, versatile, and powerful. Major eye candy! It has some way-cool applications which have become my favorites for the job they do, replacing their Gnome equivalents. But KDE is, at least on my ‘puter, a resource hog. I know I said “lightweight is over-rated,” but there are limits to how heavy I’m willing to go. KDE is great for newbies, but I’ve learned enough to make even the most spartan of Desktops “newbie-friendly.” So it’s back to Xfce for this kid.

I have been working with Xubuntu for a while now and so far it has worked wonders at a point which I haven’t used Windows for months.

About 2 weeks ago I have upgraded my current Xubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 and this has become my biggest mistake ever.

Since the upgrade this is the kind of errors that I have been getting:

Skype doesn’t have any more sounds or can’t find mic

Applications Bar gone

Turning off or rebooting fails drastically making a hardware shutdown and power up necessary

And the latest, my XServer is gone (all the user interface that looks like Windows) and with it the login screen (everything now is terminal)

From all the troubles so far, the Xserver is by far the worst. Since it is gone I haven’t been able to run it using my user and to execute it I have to run everything as root.

After making a short trip to Windows and checking Google to find some solution at least for the XServer, I could manage to make the everything come back, but all using root.

If you are about to upgrade → DONT – This can be my best advise for you.

But if you are finding yourself in the same position that I was today then this is what you should do (you should be seeing only terminal at your screen):

execute display – if your x-server have a problem, then it will warn you about

now execute startx – this will start the xserver and all display options for your user. If you can see your Desktop, yeay, nothing more is necessary, otherwise you will need to run it as root (sudo startx)

Now is waiting for a good release of Xubuntu to solve this issues or reinstall everything from scratch.

* a completely new audio subsystem (pulseaudio)
* the switch from HAL to Device-Kit
* Magi-Kit a standard application management layer
* Remaster-Kit for easy iso remastering
* Encode & SUPER Encode an all in all multimedia converting app
* MAGI 2 an application launcher/installer and configuration center
* The typical BeOS like look has been improved with changes to the Deskbar , Icon Theme and GTK-Theme
* Disk-Manager now supports auto-detection of BFS(BeOS) partitions and allows to mount them .

As I posted previously I am in the process of taking the plunge into the new Ubuntu 9.10. More accur

As I posted previously I am in the process of taking the plunge into the new Ubuntu 9.10. More accurately I am taking on Kubuntu and Xubuntu. Xubuntu has been my primary operating system for some time now, but a few months ago I installed Kubuntu on my fathers computer because of its “windows-like” feel. Due to this I decided to take on Kubuntu first so I felt comfortable when updating his system in a couple months. So lets have it, shall we?

The Good:

1. First and fore most this version of Kubuntu actually worked with my laptop. My laptop is an Everex gbook that uses a low power VIA processor and graphics. The last version had many install issues and I never did get it to work right, though the same version of Xubuntu worked fine.

2. Even on my system It feels much more snappy, I am excited to see how it will preform on my fathers full powered pc.

3. Flash installed easly and worked properly on the first try, a big improvement over the last version.

4. The widgets seem more stable this time around and do not randomly quit.

The Bad:

1. Kpackagekit is still crap. The gnome/xfce manager for downloading/updating seems faster, more intuitive, user friendly, and less prone to issues. I have a hard time finding packages in kpackagekit and a weird problem…

3. That weird problem is that the Mozilla Java plug-in broke my dependencies and now I get all these maddening alerts that fill my screen and obstruct its operation. You can follow my thread on this issue over at the Ubuntu Forums

4. The reminders are worse than Windows Vista! I literally had 46 reminders about this dependency issue waiting for me when I got home. One would have done the job. There should be a way to turn these things off.

So far for me its about 50/50 which is a vast improvement over the last version. I will keep you all posted, hopefully can solve these few issues and move on to Xubuntu soon

**Update** I fixed the Java plugin issues. Apparently the Java plugin in the repos breaks some dependencies. I used aptitude to remove that package and installed the sun-java.bin instead via the terminal and all seems fine now.

The new gdm used in Karmic (x)ubuntu is a nightmare. It uses extremely long time to load and as xfce4 uses it’s own wm there is no benefit from the extended load time. gdm is now gnome only, and should be replaced.

A replacement you can use is Slim. Slim is not bloatware like the new gdm and it is very fast. It lacks some of the functionality of the old gdm, but have a look and see if you like it.

I made a simple theme to use with xubuntu. You can download it from here if you like.

I really like Xubuntu (the Ubuntu Linux with interface xfce). It’s lighweight and fast, but still have all the good things I like with Linux – the logic filesystem, the great programs etc. It makes my laptop feel very fast, eventhough it 5 years old. That it is very pretty and secure does help a bit Starting Linux after working with Windows XP on this computer feels like getting out in fresh air after suffocating. All the things I use is just an apt-get away. Lovely. The wireless works out of the box, it doesn’t in Windows. I’m happy, really happy. Now I can get some work done! Oh, and I use Opera as browser

Those of us who live in Ethiopia complain about how much we have to pay for anything. We earn less than most of the world yet we are expected to pay more. Take the case of a car for example. Say it costs 10,000 dollars in the US. Same car would cost at least 30,000 dollars in Ethiopia. Until recently, there really weren’t any locally made alternatives to choose from either.

The same principle applies to almost anything a consumer can buy – electronics, books, telecommunication, clothes and even powdered milk. But when it comes to software, ahhh… we are lucky. Until the copyright law catches up to us. But knowing Ethiopia, that may still be several years away.

Even though pretty much any software I need is easily available in software galleries on every street in beautiful Addis (I am aware that this is true around the world as well), for reasons unknown I feel guilty when I use them. And that is why I began experimenting with open source and all that it has to offer.

Open source is not very well known in Ethiopia. I don’t have figures so I can’t really tell if it’s well known around the world either. But if the guy who fixes your computer gives you a pirated copy of software and it does the job you want, then why bother looking for an alternative? If you can have nice expensive software for less than 100 Birr, then…

Why on earth would you want to use open source software?

I’m not sure I can really answer this question but I’ll just explain why I personally like using it.

Licenced to use: After I accidentally stumbled upon open source (in the form of Ubuntu Linux), I realised that there were some really interesting tools out there that I had no idea about. And they were all free. Legally.

Fast updates: Most open source programs follow regular release cycles that are sometimes faster than commercial alternatives. What good is that you say? Issues are dealt with and new features are incorporated quickly.

Feedback: Open source is built around communities. Everyone has a say in it. If there’s a feature you’d like you can ask for it or if you’re a programmer, you can just add it. Because that’s what open source is - the source is open. You can access the code.

Common misconceptions

The general belief in Ethiopia is that open source software just doesn’t match commercial software. Though this is true to an extent, I must say that most open source software evolves quickly and some offer equivalents to commercial software.

I like to try my hand out at graphic design and a little 3D modelling. Inkscape and Blender offer features that meet my needs sufficiently. Of course, I don’t really push the envelope of graphic design but I believe that these two examples of excellent open source software can meet most needs.

Office needs are met nicely by OpenOffice though there still are some formatting issues that crop up from time to time.

There are kinks that need to be ironed out. But the beauty of open source software lies in the fact that you can be a part of ironing out the wrinkles. If you don’t like the look of those icons, you can say so. Or better yet, you can make your own set.

Some open source software has made it big. Firefox would be the prime example. You may already be using it.

I’m not really sure if open source software will ever be used by the majority of the Ethiopian computer-using population. But if we ever have to pay the actual, expensive costs of the sofware we use, open source is a good alternative that is quickly getting better.

Here’s a good list of open source alternatives to commercial software. Have some fun digging and let me know what your experiences or thoughts are.

My personal favourites

Software

Firefox: Firefox is a browser. It follows standards well and has a host of plugins that considerably extend its capabilities and functions.

Pidgin: Pidgin is a program for chatting. The nice thing about Pidgin (or Adium if you’re on a Mac) is that you can log into several accounts simultaneously. Plays well with Yahoo, MSN Chat, Google Talk and even Facebook Chat.

Inkscape: This is a vector drawing program that has a Xara inspired interface. It’s simple, neat and has lots of functions and capabilities. It may not be Illustrator yet but you can do a lot with it.

Blender: Is a 3D modelling software. It has a quirky interface that takes a while to get used to, but once you are used to it, it makes sense. Check out the Blender showcase to see what this excellent program is capable of.

OpenOffice: One of the most common uses of a computer is to write documents, use spreadsheets or make presentations. OpenOffice does all this and does it well. It also has some useful features like word completion and saves to PDF without any plugins or updates.

Gimp: The Gimp is a bitmap manipulation program. You can use it to edit pictures and manipulate images for use on the web. Currently the Gimp does not support CMYK and so cannot be used for offset printing. That said, it is still a very capable program and is quickly evolving.

Operating Systems

Ubuntu: A version of linux that is easy to install, works out of the box on most systems and has a very helpful community for support.

Xubuntu: Xubuntu is a lighter version of Ubuntu that uses the XFCE desktop instead of Ubuntu’s default Gnome desktop. It works well on older hardware and can even work on systems with 256MB of RAM or less.

Updates:

I found this post by someone else who uses open source in Ethiopia. I guess there are users.

navigazione web: Konqueror

posta elettronica: KMail

chat: Kopete, Quassel IRC

torrent: KTorrent

audio: Amarok

video: Dragon Player

CD burning: K3b

navigazione file: Dolphin

Xubuntu

navigazione web: Firefox

posta elettronica: Thunderbird

chat: Pidgin, XChat IRC

torrent: Transmission

ufficio: Abiword, Gnumeric

grafica: Ristretto (viewer), Gimp (editor)

audio: Exaile

video: Totem

CD burning: Brasero

navigazione file: Thunar

Almost from my first week as a Linux user (last March), I’ve been bombarded with “lighter, faster, less bloated” until I thought I must really be missing something wonderful using “fat, bloated vanilla Ubuntu.” Well, I thought, I only have 512 of RAM. Maybe I should look into this, even though Ubuntu is way better and way faster than WinXP ever was. So my quest began the same week as Jaunty was released.

Crunchbang was awesome! Stark beauty belying incredible Ubuntu-power. U-Lite was wicked fast and pretty, but out-of-date (Hardy) and didn’t pick up some of my hardware. My own minimal Ubuntu / LXDE mixture, “Robin’s Remix“ was even faster than Crunchbang for some reason.

But y’know what? None were that noticeably faster than “plain vanilla Ubuntu.” I certainly had room for them all on my 80-gig hard drive (but never installed any side-by side). A little teeny weenie bit faster on some applications (but not others), no harder on my Celeron processor than any of the super-ultralight minimalist mixtures.

I suppose everyone who has a computer that is more than a year old thinks it’s ancient and won’t run the latest “bloated” Ubuntu or KDE or whatever.

But unless the darn thing is 10 years old or something, “plain vanilla” Ubuntu will pro’lly run just fine on it! My Xubuntu 9.10 disk arrived today and it’s flawless, pretty, powerful, and fast on my poor old decrepit, weak, sickly, has-been Dell Dimension with it’s scant 512 megs of RAM. Is it “bloated?” Well, maybe in the ‘buntu effort to “be all things to all users” the term might apply, because here and there it has a pre-installed application that does the same thing that another pre-installed one does. So it gives me a choice. Is that “bloat?” Only if I run both at the same time. But it’s nice to play with new ones sometimes.

All I’m say’n is that I got so caught up in the pursuit of more lightweight, less bloat, faster speed, and low resource requirements that I sorta forgot what I quit Windows for!

I just want to run applications, not the operating system.

But I lost alot of time (and data, being a n00b) in this vain pursuit which turned out not to matter at all in the big picture. I’m just about right back where I started, and I’m more than content. Except that I feel a little cheated. That oughtto teach me to quit following every little fad that comes along. Lightweight is over-rated. And contentment is way under-rated.

Yes, Linux is amazingly customizable. We tweak it because we can. That’s cool, and it’s fun! But I think I got so caught up in the obsessive quest for “lightweight Linux” that I missed the boat in other areas that matter just as much to a non-geeky boy like me.

¿Increíble no?

I really hate doing this and i hate using ***dows, but let me asure you, this is only a temporary solution to my problem. The poll about what new type of Ubuntu i am going to use is still going good. Do i hate not being able to complain about free and opensource software when it doesn’t work? YES! Do i have to wait and be patient? Seems like it.

On October 29th, 2009, Ubuntu 9.10 (codenamed “Karmic Koala”) was released. This is the 11th release

On October 29th, 2009, Ubuntu 9.10 (codenamed “Karmic Koala”) was released. This is the 11th release of the Linux distribution, and it may just be one of the best.

With this release of the Linux distribution, users will likely notice improved stability, along with a great selection of new desktop wallpapers and a slightly revamped theme. This is what the main desktop looks like:

There’s also some new applications included with this release. One of the most notable would be the new Ubuntu Software Center, which I reviewed a little while back. The Ubuntu Software Center can install, uninstall, and search for applications available for the Linux distribution.

In addition to Ubuntu Software Center, Ubuntu 9.10 also ships with the Ubuntu One client, as well as a disk management utility. For more information about Ubuntu One you can read the review I posted a few months back here. For the disk management utility, it allows you to modify, add, and remove partitions on your hard drive(s). In addition to working with hard drives, you can also erase CDs and DVDs (provided that the media supports it), and burn ISO images to disk. Here’s what it looks like:

If you’re an Ubuntu user, or are familiar with it, you’ll probably notice on the above screenshot that the window border is different. Instead of the more orange-like border seen with earlier releases, it’s now the dark brown color found above. You can still easily switch the window border to one of the other pre-installed ones. For those who aren’t aware, you can download more window borders and like-items from sites like http://gnome-look.org and http://art.gnome.org.

As for the new wallpapers, they all look pretty nice. The screenshot below is of the wallpaper selection tool, in which you can see a thumbnail of all of the new wallpapers. If you can’t find a wallpaper you like, the sites listed above for window borders also have a wide variety of wallpapers.

The release is slightly buggy right now, but I’d imagine that most of the major issues will be fixed over the coming weeks. Whether you’ll be upgrading or doing a clean install, it’s a very good idea to test your system using the Ubuntu 9.10 live CD to make sure all of your hardware and things like that don’t have any major issues.

For more information about all of the new features and improvements in Ubuntu 9.10, you can read the technical overview here. And if you’re looking for more screenshots, I’ve uploaded some to a set on Flickr, which can be found here: http://bit.ly/MdhWu.

Last ned Xubuntu her.

[En] : Parole is a media player comparable to totem, using Gstreamer framework and written by Ali Abdallah for the Xfce desktop.

The new version 0.1.91 is out, and you can also get the git sources.
