KID SISTER ANNOUNCES ARRIVAL OF DEBUT ALBUM THE NEWLY TITLED ULTRAVIOLET OUT NOVEMBER 17TH ON Downto

KID SISTER ANNOUNCES ARRIVAL OF DEBUT ALBUM

THE NEWLY TITLED ULTRAVIOLET OUT NOVEMBER 17TH ON Downtown Records / Universal Republic

When Kid Sister (aka Melisa Young) turned in her album, originally titled Dream Date, in September of 2008, she pulled a daring move and asked Downtown to hold off on releasing it.

“There were a few things about the album that irked me…the album wasn’t cohesive”, Young told Pitchfork in an interview earlier this year. Downtown allowed her some time to make the album what she wanted, and she went back to work with executive producer A-Trak and the rest of the creative team behind Fool’s Gold. The result is Ultraviolet. The album merges electronic music and club rap in ways that have never been done before.

The album includes production by some of the most sought after, cutting edge producers working today (including A-Trak, Rusko, Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso, Sinden, XXXChange, Brian Kennedy, Herve, Yuksek and DJ Gant-Man) who all seem to have recognized the talent and star power that also motivated Kanye West to collaborate with her on 2007’s Pro Nails single, helping in part to create the deafening buzz that surrounds her now. The album is 12 songs deep, with each track being mixed seamlessly into the next, creating a continuous mix of songs that contain an innovative approach to their perfectly honed pop sensibilities. The final release of Kid Sister’s signature effervescent rapping style with these innovative producers will cement her debut release as one of the most talked about this year.

Kid Sister is also gearing up for a national tour that starts next week-

Moving things forward with a local chapter of Steve Aoki’s notorious Dim Mak parties – on the fly presents Pase Rock, as first cab off the rank, Friday 16 October at OAF. As Spank Rock’s right-hand man, Brooklyn producer/DJ/rapper Pase Rock needed little introduction. Now as an integral part of Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak label, roster and Hollywood party posse, Pase is shakin’ and bakin’ in the US hipster scene and playing shows non-stop all around the world while still finding time to produce his own brand of slap-happy, potty-mouthed party music.

As a celebrity DJ of choice, Pase Rock has DJ’ed private parties for Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake, Playboy and Lindsay Lohan. As a producer he is published on over 20 different labels as Five Deez, a member of Spank Rock and Fully Fitted (with (XXXchange and Tyler Pope from !!!) and under the Pase Rock moniker with releases such as his 2003 album Bullsh!t as Usual, the 2007 blow-up ‘Lindsay Lohan’s Revenge‘… Put your paaaanties on, put that pussy away, Pase is on his way! Support from Dangerous Dan, Mik Menace, Cassette and that foppish dilettante Tha Fizz.

New York based artist PASE ROCK is a renaissance man in demand. Since teaching himself how to scratch on his Grandmothers direct drive turntable at 9 years old, Pase has been utterly fascinated with the infinite rotation of the vinyl platter. He started his DJ career in the early to mid nineties playing house parties with friends around Ohio and Atlanta spinning club-ready Hip Hop, House, Old Soul and R&B, Rock and whatever gets the people moving.Pase is a celebrity DJ of choice, having DJ’d private parties for Snoop Dogg, The Black Eyed Peas, Justin Timberlake, Playboy, Lindsay Lohan, Larry Flynt and Hustler Enterprises, Adidas, Diesel Jeans, Urb magazine, Vibe magazine and scores more. He has toured around the world as both a DJ and MC with the hip hop groups Five Deez and Spankrock since 2001 visiting Japan, France, UK, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Austria, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, The United States, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and the Czech Republic. Recently hes also been seen collaborating with Prefuse 73 , Diplo, Tortoise, Japanese superproducer Nujabes, XXXChange and more. After numerous twelve inch releases on over 20 different record labels he released his first solo album, Bullshit as Usual, exclusively in Japan on Dimid Recordings in 2003.It was met with both critical and commercial success. Five Deez has released three international studio albums, 2001’s Koolmotor on Counterflow Recordings , 2003’s Kinkynasti, and 2006s Kommunicator on Rapster/ K7 records. His most recent 12 Lindsay Lohans Revenge has been causing a frenzy in clubland since it was leaked on the internet right before the New Year in 2006.It can regularly be heard in regular rotation of the DJ sets of DJs like DJ AM , Steve Aoki, Stretch Armstrong, Mark Ronson and even Lindsay Lohan herself! Maybe its the infectious hook about celebutantes penchant for showing their nether regions, Put your paaaanties on, put that pu**y away! Pase also likes to play a lot of golf.

What is a DJ if he can’t scratch? What is a MC if he can’t rap? What is a beat without a live clap? Well I can do it all baby, just like that! Trading off Egyptian Lover’s classic rap, Pase Rock has built a career as an exponent of the four elements of hip hop. As an MC and producer he is published on over twenty labels worldwide, as a DJ he plays non-stop all around the world and is in tight with both the Hollywood hipster scene and NY Mafioso, as a dancer he’s a natural (check the youtube on the Fuzzy boat cruise a few years back) – and you need only ask the management at Kings Cross club Melt if he writes graffiti (sorry, Walter). But Pase Rock is not just about doing these things, but rather progressing them, building a career and having a good time doing it under KRS-One’s mantra, that “the essence of hip hop is in transformation”!For starters, Pase Rock’s work with the Spank Rock fraternity released the global dance scene from its impoverished electro-house infatuation in the mid-2000s; his work with rap group Five Deez speaks to the old school but moves beat production to the next level; his Fully Fitted project with XXXchange, Devlin and Darko and Tyler Pope from !!! breathed new life into an old suite of samples and helped resuscitate belief in the ‘club’ sound last year; while his own brand of slap-happy, potty-mouthed party music continues this legacy with original collaborations alongside today’s stars – Santogold and Amanda Blank. And we don’t stop! His debut artist album, Bullsh!t as Usual, has since been complemented by last year’s blow-up, ‘Lindsay Lohan’s Revenge’, and two new cuts on Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak label, ‘Get Money Kids’ and ‘So Fuckin Disco’. “I’ll be releasing a new 12”, ‘Nights’, on Dim Mak next month, then an album Spring time [in the US] next year,” he tells me, but is reticent to say where. “I don’t know what label that will be on; I can’t commit to an answer there.”That said, there’s no denying he’s in tight with Dim Mak and the rest of the West Coast party massive, “I decided to move out here, to LA, a few months back. I was working out here a lot, there was the Dim Mak connection and you might say I wanted a change of pace, hehe… there’s a bit more action here anyway, New York has been a bit quiet lately and is especially susceptible to bad weather – people refuse to go out in the cold.”But of course you can’t discuss the West Coast Party scene without discussing DJ AM, America’s #1 DJ who was found dead in his NY apartment last month. “We’re all just trying to deal with it still,” he sighs, “AM was such an important part of nightlife here, I mean it’s surreal to think that I’ll never get to see him DJ again or hang out with him; he was such a permanent fixture in everybody’s life. What’s worse is I just found out the MTV series that he made just before his death will screen next week.”There’s a real sense of sadness with Pase personally and from what I can gather across the whole scene in LA. With this he tells me how keen he is to “get out” for a bit and head down to Australia. The show must go on, with this trip dovetailing with a recent three-month tour that took in South America, North America and North and South East Asia. It will be his fifth trip to Oz, having travelled here thrice before with Spank Rock to play Big Day Out and the Sydney Festival. I have grand memories of these previous trips when I have had the pleasure to DJ and hang out with Pase and all the Spank Rock guys. On the last trip in particular, the chemistry between the two MCs, Pase Rock and Spank Rock, was electric – they were on fire, a soulful rap attack that peaked with a cover of Jimmy Bo Horne’s ‘Spank’ that nodded to Michael Jackson circa ‘Smooth Criminal’.

Around that time though Spank Rock himself, Naeem Juwan, made a decision that ‘Spank Rock’ was now a one man band – an MC with producers and collaborators, rather than a band or collective. It was a move that surprised me at the time, but one that doesn’t seem to have adversely impacted on the dynamics between the wider group or Spank and Pase, the MCs, themselves.

“I’m down with those guys til the day I die,” he tells me in reference to the Spank Rock troupe. “ I mean XXXchange has produced half my album, Chris, Ron, Alex and I still have the Fully Fitted label, Naeem, Santogold and Amanda are all on my upcoming record. That’s just the way it is.”

It’s comforting to hear and at this juncture I recall a conversation I had with Naeem when we discussed his persistent and evolving schedule of collaborations (within Spank Rock and beyond with the likes of Bjork, Coldcut, Teki Latex and Lady Sovereign). “There’s a bunch of people out there that like what I do, likewise there’s people making awesome jamms that I’m into,” he told me. “We’re all members of the indie music scene or fraternity or whatever you want call it.”

Pase Rock clearly holds the same view – an all singing, all dancing party machine who is about music and moving it forward: Put your paaaanties on, put that pussy away. Pase is on his way!

i was shocked last night when xxxchange dropped jaydee’s plastic dreams and people around me didn’t recognise it. i always thought it was some sort of classic. it’s been around donkeys years (it first appeared in 1992) and it seems to get remixed or re-released every other year. i first came across it as late as 2003 on steve lawler’s lights out compilation vol 2, not a great set of mixes but it introduced me to this classic piece of percussive house music. it’s dark, swirling and hypnotic, and i really think everyone should hear it. what i’ve posted is a rip from that lawler mix, but it recently appeared on the awesome r&s compilation in order to dance, both in its original incarnation and remixed by audion.

To say I’m excited about XXXChange’s upcoming show at Transmission would be a massive understatement. Over the last few years, few other DJs and producers have impressed me as much as this man, as he effortlessly switches genres and styles without ever suffering a drop in quality. He first came to my attention as the producer in chief for Spank Rock’s Yoyoyoyoyo in 2006, and since then his remixes have been a permanent fixture in any of my sets or mixes. Disco remixes of Pase Rock and Thom Yorke (his own personal favourite); funky reworkings of Björk and CSS; full on rave banger remixes of The Virgins, Bloc Party and Panda Bear. Not to mention his collection of re-edits with buddies Devlin and Darko as part of the Fully Fitted crew.

As a DJ he first caught my attention with the riotous Spank Rock contribution to the Fabriclive series, but it was his guest spot on Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space show that truly showed his versatility and willingness to eschew any sense of genrefication. While DJs like Diplo and A-Trak explore genres and throw together hip-hop and electro, XXXChange is more likely to look for some 70s disco or 80s punk. See Voila, his mix with Chris Rockswell. Featuring tracks from ESG and Led Zeppelin alongside Destiny’s Child and, of course, Spank Rock, it is a musical journey unlike any other. Alex himself cites this, alongside Couche Tard, another mix done with Chris, has his favourite mix project. “Hopefully we’ll do another one of these soon. The Fabric one was a royal pain in the butt because you have to license all the songs and we usually like to be pretty free and unrestricted about what material we use, and also we really like to put in a ton of records, which the licensing process doesn’t allow for.”

Since Yoyoyoyoyo his work with Spank Rock has calmed down, as Naeem (Spank Rock’s hyperactive frontman) branched out and worked with Benny Blanco on the 2 Live Crew-influenced Bangers and Cash EP: “I don’t travel with them on tour anymore but I’m still helping out in the studio. Naeem wanted to retain a little more creative control over the project for this album so I’m just trying to help him out whenever he gets stuck.” Which I guess means there’s a new Spank Rock album in the mix – something to look forward to. As for his own solo work, it’s also on the way. “I’m working on a solo LP right now except I seem to be constantly in the studio working on other people’s stuff. so I think it might take quite a while to finish it up.” As well as that there’s a 12” due this summer on Turntable Lab, and if it’s anything like his production work to date it’s something worth waiting for.

While his own work hits the blogs on a regular basis, there’s an abundance of material splattered across the internet almost every day. How is it possible to separate the wheat from the chaff when there’s so much to get through? “I think the amount of stuff that’s worth checking out is about the same as it’s always been. Since most of us find out about music from the internet the absolute glut of information can be overwhelming. I find it’s a bit easier to just wait a few months and see what rises to the top, see what people are still talking about. Obviously with DJing you need to be on top of new music so it’s nice to find a few good sources to filter the information for you, there’s a few good music blogs and also you can look at different DJ’s playlists, whose taste you trust, to find out about new stuff too.”

Surely someone like XXXChange will be a little but more discerning than most: “As far as what it takes to impress me it’s just when you hear someone doing something original and taking risks etc. I’m not really interested in scenes.”

When it comes to his own DJ sets, Alex takes each night as it comes. “Usually I just try and play stuff that I’m feeling at the moment! But of course it depends on who’s in the room. In Europe I usually end up playing more electro and house type stuff which you can’t always do in the US.” So I guess that means that come Saturday, we’ll be hearing more rave than slow-burning disco. And you know, who ever said that was a bad thing.

Meanwhile, check out these XXXChange mixes, one put together just this month, and another live in the mix on Authentic Shit, enjoy the laughs from Eli, Pasey Pase and angry man Rocktacon.

i know i mainly talk about music here, but i’m a huge film fan too. i just read something crazy in yesterday’s the ticket: john turturro was due to play éamon de valera in neil jordan’s michael collins! i mean alan rickman was perfect, but that would have been very interesting… in other news, turturro is keen for the coens to put together a sequel to the big lebowski. i don’t know how i feel about that, would it dampen the spirit of the original film?

anyway, i talked about it before, but have a listen to xxxchange’s excellent we make it good mix, which kicks off with a song from that most brilliant film. and don’t forget he’s playing transmission next week – miss at your peril.

Santigold is definitely one of the fastest rising stars in the indie/dance/hip hop game. It’s hard to pull cred in all those circles, but she’s done it. All this despite the fact that she’s had to change her name from Santogold to Santigold because of some C class DJ who’s been calling himself Santogold for some time now. A brooklyn DJ just dropped the new mixtape Southerngold which pairs Santi’s songs with verses from southern rappers. Her propper LP was one of the best albums released last year, and her colab mixtape with Diplo, Top Ranking, is easily my favorite mixtape released in a long while. All this and the countless remixes and guest spots are propelling her to the top fast.

i’ve been completely slacking on my blog this week, but hey i took some time off after exams and then had to pack up a year of my life and get the flock out of preston. so i have to re-up on my innanet game, forgive me. i just got this banging joe and will ask? remix of milke, it’s a huge summery synthy monster that will probably go down a treat at festivals across europe this summer. check it out here. i know i said i’d have the interview i did with these guys up a while back but everything seems to have gotten in the way – tomorrow! for definite.

there are so many good gigs coming up in dublin, it’s insane – probably not a good time for me to come back if i want to be in any way productive, but oh well. it’s looking like this (and i can’t even make all of these):

june 5 – shadow dancer (live), kennedy’s
june 5 – kormac and dj yoda @ mud, the twisted pepper
june 20 – âme @ pogo, the twisted pepper
june 27 – xxxchange @ transmission, the button factory

i just can’t deal with all of this. i guess it all comes down to who will give me guestlist also major props to shock aka jon averill who has a major hand in many of the above gigs. what a dude.

i love checking out the we make it good series – some of the key players in everything that’s good in electronic ghetto music have done one so far, like xxxchange and blaqstarr. the latest comes from new york band free blood, and it looks quite interesting. in that i’ve never heard of anyone involved before really. so check it out!

In the spirit of our occasional “non-dj” twist on the WMIG mix series, our buddy John from Brooklyn’s FREE BLOOD was kind enough to make us this awesome mixtape of influences, inspirations, and springtime newyorkness. Eddie Kendricks, Kid Creole, Freddie Mas; this “tape” harkens back to the high school days of yore when our mixtapes were top to bottom all full of awesome! Embrace the roughly polished sheen of FREE BLOOD and get to listenin at the listenin place! Be sure to download and be sure to check out theFADER.com.

No. I did not try to write Exchange and fuck it all up. I was randomly looking around on Hype Machine (http://www.hypem.com) and I randomly started looking up XXXChange’s stuff. He is a guy that is mostly known for remixing songs of artists such as Spank Rock, Santigold, Amanda Blank, and Diplo. I’ve been kinda sorta following him every so often because he is one of the guys at a Spank Rock show that is at the back of the stage with the headphones on, grooving while spinning the shit that goes behind Spank Rock while he raps. And, well–he is good at it. That whole Philly group really is a tight clique.

So anyway, I started listening to a remix he did of Santigold’s “Les Artistes“, and I liked it. But what really got me was the production work he did on the Amanda Blank song that I posted below. Fuck, I love it. Yum. It’s called “I Might Like You Better“. I ain’t no Amanda Blank stalker or anything but if I was a lesbian she might just be my #1 love. She even has a hilarious blog… http://littleamandablank.blogspot.com/.

Anyway, I <3 the two of them. Here are the songs.

i’m really loving this album from thunderheist. i keep thinking spank rock only female. isis = naeem, grahm = xxxchange. they first came to my attention through eli’s remix of sweet 16, or was it the nacho lovers remix of jerk it, either way, the album is really sweet. funky, glitchy, nasty, it’s all good. i’m hearing references and allusions to dead prez, nelly (remember him?), all sorts of hip-hop across the spectrum, but it’s got that poppy electro sound that’s bound to get heads nodding and feet tapping.

There’s not enough Spanish language music represented in today’s hipster blogosphere, so I’m pleased to be able to share this new song from Ceci Bastida (produced by XXXChange) with you today. “Controlar” is a blippy little electronic number featuring angsty vocals from Tijuana based Ceci. Maybe this is a lame comparison, but her voice actually reminds me of Julieta Venegas (while the song itself sounds nothing like her). Hey, they’re both from Tijuana, right?

Philly’s female misogynist, Amanda Blank, is nothing short of amazing. Her solo tracks, which have been produced by the likes of Spank Rock and Pace Rock are urban but playful, her collabs with queens of all things cool, M.I.A. and Santogold redefine the role of women in the hipster-hop and her style, well look at her. I’ve not yet seen her live but hope to grab the chance when she hits either the MTL or TO stage with Santogold in early June. Blank’s debut album I Love Youdrops July 14th and is produced by the sensational Diplo, Switch and XXXChange!

I’m noticing a trend. Two straight Philly artists… There must be something wrong here being that I am a proud New York sports fan, it’s pretty much not allowed that I acknowledge anything out of the Illadelph. I guess today’s a good day for rule-breaking especially since thanks to the fine people at Urb, word comes that finally the first fruits of Lady Guttermouth herself, Amanda Blank, is finally upon us. If you haven’t gotten of her collabs with Spank Rock and Pase Rock then get ready. The first single Might Like You Better is making the rounds and I must say it’s pretty fun. Produced by XXXchange and chock full of sexual innuendos to make Jenna Jameson blush, this one should be a big hit to keep you all hot and bothered until the debut record I Love You finally hits 19 July via Downtown. So what do we think, heads? Kiss it or diss it? Check it out below…

…I keep that shit nasty. Wait—what? Oh, that is one of my favorite lines from the song “Bump” which features Amanda Blank on Spank Rock’s cd Yoyoyoyoyo. I will never think of Kelly Bundy the same. Anywho, is Amanda (the gold hoop rockin’, stiletto wearin’, cat claw nail wearing) Blank ever going to stop being featured on other artist’s CD’s and instead put out her own? Lord knows that when she enters the stage everyone starts going wild–just think of all the Spank Rock shows.

Well the answer is yes. Pitchfork interviewed Diplo 2 years ago and he said that he’d, “really like to help her develop her style, she’s not making so much music because I think she’s afraid to fail.”Well, she has finally mustered up the courage and is releasing a CD on Downtown Records that is set to hit stores July 14th. The Cd, titled I Love You, features hit makers such as: Spank Rock, Lykke Li, The Cool Kids, Xxxchange, Santigold, and yes—Diplo. Basically all the artists that know how to make your ass shake.

I can honestly say that I am excited!!!
