Today we link up in thought and prayer to send our love and energy outward from us to three of our beloved Prayer Registry children: Kevin DeLoyd Holter who passed on May 29, 2006, Michael Scott Schmidt who passed on May 29, 2011,

Xzavier Alan Francisco who passed on May 29, 2011.

Dear Prayer Giver,

Wherever you are reading this, sit down for a minute and bring all your attention to this sacred present moment. Take a deep breath and slowly let it out.

Dear Kevin, Michael and Xzavier,

We, The Prayer Team, are thinking of you and praying for your happiness. We send you energy and love at all levels and we pray that it nourishes and supports you as you move forward in your present existence. We want you to know that you are very loved and will never be forgotten.

Meditation/Visualization: —continue to sit comfortably and allow yourself to be here in the present moment.

Bring all your attention to the tip of your nose and imagine that you are the gatekeeper at the gates of a big city and that it is your very important job to watch the coming and the going of your breath. Simply focus all your concentration at the tip of your nose and observe the breath as it enters and leaves you.

As you breathe-in focus on the feeling of the breath as it enters your nostrils

As you breathe-out focus on the feeling of the breath as it leaves your nostrils

Breathing-in feel the breath coming into you

Breathing-out feel the breath as it leaves you.

Continue to focus on your breathing

If your mind wanders away from the breath, gently bring your focus back to the tip of your nose and focus on your breathing again.

As you breathe-in feel the cool air as it enters your nostrils

As you breathe-out feel the warm air as it leaves your nostrils

Breathing-in cool, breathing-out warm

Breathing-in cool, breathing-out warm.

Now as you breathe-in, envision Kevin, Michael and Xzavier

standing in the light

As you breathe-out, envision Kevin, Michael and Xzavier

before you looking vibrant and well.

As you inhale, envision drawing energy into you

As you exhale envision directing that energy to Kevin, Michael and Xzavier

As you inhale continue to visualize energy entering into you.

As you exhale see this energy flowing outward from you and surrounding Kevin, Michael and Xzavier.

See that they are smiling

See that they are glowing in the light

See that they are all happy and free!

As you breathe-in feel that you are strengthened by this energy

As you breathe-out direct this feeling of strength to families of Kevin, Michael and Xzavier

As you breathe-in draw peace into yourself

As you exhale send that feeling of peace to the families of Kevin, Michael and Xzavier.

Dear Kevin, Michael and Xzavier,

We see you smiling and glowing in the light. May you know that LOVE, the one universal sustaining force, is being sent to you now and always will be. May you feel it and know that love is without end. You will always be loved and you will always be remembered. Peace be with you children. We love you. The Prayer Team.

Zach is heard everywhere. Zeke is gaining. What other Z names might catch on?

Thanks to JNE for suggesting Zebedee as Baby Name of the Day.

We don’t know much about the original Zebedee. He’s one of those Biblical figures mentioned briefly, without much in the way of a biography. In the New Testament, he’s a fisherman from Galilee, married to Salome, and father to the apostles James and John. A few comments suggest that the family was fairly well-off, but whether Zebedee was a pillar of the community or a rat bastard, well … his kids turned out just fine, so let’s assume he’s a worthy namesake.

There’s also Zebadiah, a name that appears in the Old Testament. Both come from the Greek Zebedaois, which means something like “God has given.”

Neither of the Zeb- names has ever appeared in the US Top 1000, though Zeb appeared in the nineteenth century. The unrelated, but equally Biblical Zebulon, appeared a few times in the late 1800s, too.

Before we dismiss Zebedee as too quirky for consideration, take a gander at the current US Top 1000. The letter Z is well represented:

Zachary ranked #47 in 2008, with variants Zackary at #362, Zachery at #625 and the most phonetic Zackery at #638;

Spiritual place name Zion came in at #232, with the African Zaire at #844;

Cowboy Zane ranked #235, plus variants Zain (#797) and Zayne (#825);

Biblical Ezekiel, a popular way to get to the diminutive Zeke, ranked #241 while Ezequiel came in at #519;

A modern truncated form of Alexander, Zander ranked #298 with Xander at #267;

Slightly more elaborate than Zach, there’s Zachariah (#441) and Zechariah (#659);

There’s Aiden and Jayden‘s zippy cousins Zayden (#488) and Zaiden (#898);

Zavier charted at #742, though original Xavier ranked #81 and triple word score Xzavier was #628;

Just Zack ranked #884 and plain Zaid came in at #924;

Lastly, #929 Hezekiah could also lead to Zeke.

And that list doesn’t count z-laden names like Ezra, Enzo, Cruz and Denzel.

The letter Z might be big, but Zebedee’s uses are few:

When the BBC borrowed French children’s show Le Manège enchanté, it became The Magic Roundabout. The stop motion cult classic was broadcast into the late 1970s and beyond. From French to English, most of the characters changed names. Jack-in-the-box Zébulon became Zebedee;

Thomas the Tank Engine’s creators also made a series about tugboats. TUGS was never anywhere near as successful, but the rights also went to Thomas’ parent company. Some of the tugboats left Bigg City Port for the Island of Sodor, including Zebedee. He was a troublemaker in the original series, but came to Henry’s rescue in Thomas;

BBC Radio Four’s Zeb Soanes was born Zebedee. There must be a few more out there, but he’s one of the few who has achieved some renown.

It’s not much to work with. You’d probably have to adore Z names – and possibly have older kids called Zoe, Zara, Zachary and Zane – to consider a Zeb- choice. But they’re appealing choices, with just enough history to make them more substantial than Zaidyn.

We’ve covered Ignatius and Aloysius, so it seems only natural that today we turn our attention to Xavier.

Thanks to Lola for suggesting our Name of the Day.

Xavier is originally a place name, but the first bearer is best known for wandering far from home.

Francisco de Xavier was born in 1506, an aristocrat with an aristocratic moniker. As was the custom, the de Xavier refers to his place of birth – the family castle in the Kingdom of Navarre. This makes Xavier easily the most popular name of Basque derivation today. The original is given as exte berri, etcheberria or echeverria, but in every case the translation is simple: new house. While Xavier Castle is still standing, Francisco’s family surrendered the keys when he was still a boy and Navarre became part of the Kingdom of Spain.

As a younger son, Francisco was destined for the priesthood. He roomed with Ignatius Loyola at the University of Paris. Along with Loyola, he’s considered co-founder of the religious order commonly known as the Jesuits. At a time when travel was rare, Francisco went globe trotting in service to the Catholic church, converting new adherents as far away as India, China and Japan.

Given his influence, it’s not surprising that plenty of children were named in his honor. You’ll find a wealth of Francis Xaviers and Xaviers throughout the historical record, and the name is translated into virtually every language – Saverio in Italian, Ksawery in Polish and, of course, Javier in Spanish.

While the practice of naming children after saints is less common than ever, Xavier’s use is at all time high in the US. He ranked a quite popular #68 in 2007.

You’ll most often hear Xavier pronounced as a two-syllable name: ZAYV yer, leading to the modern English variant Zavier. Some favor a three-syllable ecks ZAYV yer, giving us the tortured respelling Xzavier. And the Latino Javier – hav EE yair - is common, too.

Perhaps some parents are influenced by fictional X-Men founder Charles Francis Xavier, better known as Professor X. The name has undeniable fringe hero cachet without being as obvious as calling your kid Anakin.

We’ve had a soft spot for the name ever since Xavier Roberts inflicted the Cabbage Patch Kid craze on unsuspecting parents of the 80s. If you recall, every Kid came with a birth certificate. In our day, names were never repeated, and were often deliciously weird.

Today, parents who choose Xavier may be surprised to discover that he’s as common as Wyatt or Julian – about 6,500 boys were given each name last year. Xavier is also big in Australia and Canada.

With his zippy Z-sound, Xavier manages to sound offbeat and different, without actually being truly unusual. This could represent a perfect compromise for parents bored with preppy surnames like Carson and Sawyer and the monotony of ends-in-n choices like Ryan, Aidan and Logan. For others, Xavier is the kind of choice that would’ve been ideal – had only their son been born back in 1982.

We like him quite a bit, and think he works well for a modern child. In fact, we don’t mind hearing quite a bit of Xavier.
