Mission Creek 2013 Closes with Deerhoof

The Mill was packed tight on Sunday, April 7^th, as fans crowded into the venue with drinks and cameras in tow to see indie rock legend Deerhoof headline Mission Creek Festival 2013. Iowa native bands Love Songs for Lonely Monsters and Wet Hair also drew in the crowd upon opening the show for the San Francisco Natives.

Even on the last night of the festival Deerhoof bandmates Satomi Matsuzaki, John Dieterich, Ed Rodriguez, and Greg Saunier and the openers managed to attract in a crowd large enough to fill the venue.

Hospitality staffer and fan Kelly Jackson said that Deerhoof was the perfect choice to close the festival.

“By the end of the week I just really needed a bit more of a push to say, ‘woohoo it’s fun time! Let’s go out!’ and Deerhoof was perfect for that,” she said. “The entire show was so high energy- like a well-deserved finale for all of the fans.”

Booking such a high-energy act to close the festival was not just a convenient coincidence.  In fact, Mission Creek Marketing Director Nathan Gould said that bringing such a big name that also has a built in fan base in Iowa City was an important part of the marketing plan.

“We embrace the festival as being a week long so it’s really fun to have not only a headliner or one of the more key names, but also a really energetic band,” Gould said. “Its kind of this great juxtaposition of everyone who has been run ragged all week but then we have this really high-energy rock show to close it out in a celebratory form.”

Fans and Staff were not the only one who looked forward to Deerhoof’s visit to Downtown Iowa City. Shawn Reed of Wet Hair said that he was also happy to be playing with such a historical indie rock band like Deerhoof.

“Deerhoof and Wet Hair are both bands that stuck it out and existed through different eras of independent and underground music,” Reed said. “So, in a way we have a common background. I think the pairing really made sense.”

Nick Parks of Love Songs for Lonely Monsters echoed Reed’s excitement about opening for one of his favorite bands.

“I missed out on a lot of the festival this year but playing with Deerhoof was probably the highlight of my year,” he said.

Even Deerhoof themselves said that they had a great time playing the closing show for Mission Creek. Drummer Greg Saunier said, “[it was a] nutty show, and great fun. Thank you Iowa City for coming out and teaching me how to play Catan.”

Iowa City, Iowa, has been home to a rich music scene for decades. Pricing a show is always difficult but through the decades, it has maintained a diverse and lively music scene that is fairly inexpensive. The credit goes to talent buyers of the different music venues Iowa City has to offer.

“Fortunately, Iowa City is geographically located in between large music markets like Minneapolis and Chicago,” Chris Wiersema, talent buyer for The Mill, said. “We are a prime route destination spot and when I see tours of artists that cross paths with Iowa City, I hop on that opportunity to bring them in.”

Chris Wiersema has worked as the talent buyer for The Mill for over two years now. As a talent buyer, he believes one thing to be the key to reeling in artists to his venue: relationships. He builds relationships with agents who have a staple of artists, the agents will call him when a new record is released and tour dates are being planned. The artists must maintain a price but Wiersema ultimately determines the price of the tickets.

“We must first make sure the artists get enough money from their performance. We try to have a base cost of six dollars for most of our shows,” he said. “As a business, we rarely make money. We maintain our business by food and drink sales during performances.”

Brent Johnson, the talent buyer for Gabe’s as of this year, agrees with Wiersema that the artists come first and they must get enough money out of a show. He believes that the community is a huge deciding factor of what artists to bring in and how to price the shows accordingly, which can reap benefits in years to come.

“The way the show is put on can be a building block for both the venue and the artist,” he said. “However, if there are shows that are similar several days in a row, you are not going to make a dime because the community will lose interest and it is a missed opportunity for different artists to come in to show their talent.”

Scott Kading, owner and talent buyer for The Iowa City Yacht Club, has been in the profession for 11 years. When he books artists, he maintains a nice mix of bands they want to see versus what people in the community want to see. Kading also gets several requests from smaller bands to get stage time so he holds free shows on their downstairs stage to give them an opportunity. This opportunity in turn also provides an opportunity for his business because it brings in people to enjoy the free show while making a profit off the drinks the concertgoers buy.

“The booking process at the Yacht Club is an organic process,” he said. “We host all types of music, we host free shows to keep smaller band happy to get the performing time and that is what keeps us on our toes more. That is what being a talent buyer is truly about.”

Iowa City is often seen solely as a bar scene and a weekend getaway. However, they provide just as much music entertainment during the week as they do on the weekend. The prices of shows can range from free to upwards of $25 dollars but the variety of music venues provide an eclectic choice of music events to attend weekly. The Burlington Street Bluegrass Band is local band that has members from Iowa City, as well as surrounding areas. The members are Joe Peterson (mandolin), Al Murphey (fiddle), Bob Black (banjo), Aleta Murphey (bass), Mike Finders (guitar), Dale Thomas (dobro) and often have a guest artist play with them. They play every second and forth Wednesday of each month at The Mill for a $5 admission. They play solely because they enjoy playing and charging such a cheap price for their shows allows people to keep coming back to enjoy their performances.

Iowa City is rich with art of all kinds. Several music venues offer a variety of genres, atmospheres, and experiences. Two of these venues, the Yacht Club and the Englert Theatre, have been around for quite some time. I talked to Pete McCarthy about the Yacht Club and what makes it unique.

McCarthy is the General Manager of the Yacht Club. He explained that the Yacht Club has been open for ten years. They are a full-service live music venue that is open six nights a week. They have comedy on Monday nights, dance parties with DJs on Tuesday nights, and jam sessions on Wednesday nights. The Yacht Club hosts live bands every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

As far as what makes the Yacht Club unique, McCarthy says they are the only place in Iowa City that has amateur stand-up comedy. In addition, they provide the instruments for their weekly jam sessions. “Any local musician or anybody in town who wants to play can get up on stage and play,” says McCarthy. The Yacht Club also has a live music exemption from the city, which allows people of all ages to attend their shows even though there is liquor on the premises.

The Englert Theatre is a 740-seat venue that serves both the Iowa City community and those who travel from surrounding states. Katie Roche, the Development Director at the Englert Theatre, says that the theatre represents all areas of the arts – they have a gallery for 2D and 3D art and a stage that can accommodate dance, film, orchestral music, and bands. They also have fly space, which allows large sets to be moved in and out for different productions.

Marissa Ripoli, a student at the University of Iowa, frequents both of these venues. One of her favorite aspects of the Yacht Club is the staff. She says that they are always very nice and that they bring in fun bands. Ripoli says her favorite thing about the Englert Theatre is the atmosphere. “It’s historic, it’s really pretty inside, and it’s clean,” she says.

So here we are driving our baby car around the northern end of the DR. I had flashbacks of driving in Malaysia. Before we left on our trip, I told a Dominican co-worker of mine that I was going to be renting a car in his motherland.

“Wait, you’re renting a car?”

“Yes.”

“Have you ever driven outside of the United States?”

“Yeah, Australia, Malaysia….”

“Oh, you’ve driven in Malaysia?”

“Mmhm.”

“Oh, right, you’ll be fine then.”

And that was that. I got recognition from a Dominican that my driving skills were up to par. Thank goodness for the practice my little motorcycle in Malaysia gave me.

And that practice served me well. As most of my friends and family will let me know, I’m not the best driver. I go too fast, then too slow. I do U-turns where I shouldn’t. And when the coast is clear, I’ll even go down a one-way street (this happened just the other day). Will I get myself into a pickle one day because of my poor driving habits? Probably. But for the meantime and for my Dominican driving, I fit right in.

This Dominican driving of mine took us to many, many places along the northern coast. We saw a sign for a yacht club in Luperon, got nostalgic, and took a visit.

At the yacht club, we met the sweetest young girl I’ve gotten the privilege to spend an unexpected hour with. Here is Natalia:

Her mama is Dominican and her papa is French. She lives on a boat (of which her family was very excited to show us) in the yacht club. There’s a Vine video here of her getting so excited about taking pictures on Amanda’s camera.

Our wee, little car took us to so many places!

There is a Vine video here of us getting coco super frio! Yum! We were very excited to buy some soursop at a roadside fruit stall. If you haven’t tried this sweet fruit, you should!

In Puerto Plata, we went all the way up to the peak of Mount Isabel del Torres on the cable car. Definitely not an experience for the faint of heart!

At the top of the mountain was a statue of Jesus looking over Puerto Plata. For a minute, I thought I was in Rio de Janeiro. Who knows….perhaps I’ll have to go there and compare the two. (2014 trip to South America anyone?!)

And back down in the city of Puerto Plata, I tried to cure my fear of birds.

Then this happened….

Needless to say, I still despise the blasted things.

As I was recovering from this rather dramatic experience, Amanda and I came across these little sweethearts. They were just hanging out on their porch saying hello to folks like us.

Oh, northern coast, you were so kind to us!

I spoke as much French as I knew how to, and he seemed bemused with every sentence I managed to get out. He spoke relatively good English, and between our competencies in the other language, we held good conversation for a while.

After we finished our shots, they came with us back to the first club where we kept dancing. Pierre went back to the bar to order a drink, and one of my friends came up to me saying she had a bet with another one of my friends that I “would hook up with him in the next 6 minutes”. The power got to my head a little bit and I decided to take it into my own hands. I was planning to take it slower but when he came back I danced with him and soon enough we were kissing on the dancefloor, hands wandering and the dancing getting more and more intimate.

We stayed at that club for a while, before me and my friends went to a cheap liquor store to shotgun some bottles of mixed drinks. Three of the girls headed off, to meet other friends or to go home, and the three of us left headed back up to the club and kept dancing and taking shots.. I yoyo-ed between dancing with my friends and dancing with Pierre. The three French guys mentioned that they were staying on a boat, and that they wanted to continue the party there. I was initially hesitant, purely because I was worried they would sail away with us on board and not bring us back! But eventually we were talked into it and we got into taxi’s heading towards the yacht club.

Pierre and I took a cab together, and the other four took the next one. Within seconds of us taking off in the cab, his hands and lips were all over me, leaving long, lingering kisses up my thigh and stomach before taking my face in his hands and kissing me. He looked confused for a second and then looked innocently into my eyes, looking for the words on the tip of his tongue. Then a quiet, suggestive, “Can.. have sex.. here?”. I let out a laugh, and shook my head. I would have, but by this point the cab driver was watching and the last thing I wanted was our driver to take his eyes off the road and to have us killed whilst having sex…

Soon enough we got to the yacht club, and got onto their boat. It was quite small, and we all sat around and talked and played the ‘how well do you know each other’ game, taking shots for every answer the opposition got right… A silly game, but we were all hammered by this point and any reason to drink was good enough! We lapsed into phases of the three of us making out – whilst I had been getting cosy with Pierre, the other four had paired up unbeknownst to me.

After a while Pierre led me into the back bedroom of the boat. Well, it was less a bedroom and more a small room that consisted of a bed and nothing else. I was a bit self-conscious because my friends were outside, so I made haste to cover myself with the blanked while we had sex. I also made great efforts to keep quiet, knowing my friends if I had been loud about it I never would have heard the end of it…

After we were done, he led me outside and we sat on the side of the boat and talked. It was quite adorable, he asked me if I had ‘VIH’, which I corrected to ‘HIV’ before telling him I didn’t. We talked about ourselves and our lives, before we decided to get off the boat and go for a walk. We held hands and wandered barefoot up and down the pier, looking at all the different boats, before coming to stop at the very end of the pier, sitting down with our feet in the water.

I rested my head on his shoulder, and we talked more about nothing in particular, commenting on the city and it’s beauty. A big fish leapt out of the water and that kept us amused for a while, before he leant down and kissed me again. He pulled me on top of himself – almost making me land in the water – and we started kissing again. Things probably would have heated up again were it not for his friend who said my friend wanted to go. We went back in and sure enough, she was feeling like it was time to go, I don’t think she wanted to go any further with the guy she had been hooking up with.

We said our goodbyes and wandered back to my hotel room, making the obligatory stop at McDonalds place for breakfast, before collapsing in my bed for a few hours sleep before the next day’s activities.

TB: For the people at home reading this, can you just explain what Army Girls is all about?

CE: Yeah! We are a two-piece rock-and-roll band consisting of guitar, drums, and vocals, and we write songs about fear and loneliness, um, pretty much exclusively.

AS: Yeah. All the simple things in life.

CE: All the simple things in life – yeah.

TB: I hear Army Girls was almost named after a kitchen appliance instead.

AS: Really?

CE: Really?

AS: Who said that?

TB: It was in an interview you guys did. You were talking about looking around the kitchen and just putting the word “The” before things.

AS: Fork? Spoon?

CE: Spoon? Fork?

AS: Knife? And then we were ladle.

CE: Ladle. Yeah, it’s true. The act of finding a band name was a lengthy process full of disappointing realizations about the limits of our imaginations.

AS: Yeah. Every time I stop to think about it, it’s always like… you know… whatever I come up with there would probably be something that is 10 times better, and then something that is 10 times better than that.

CE: I feel like everybody thinks that they’re more creative than maybe they actually are. Which isn’t to say that people aren’t creative; it just means that we don’t apply ourselves very often.

AS: Or it’s that fear and we’re self-doubting.

CE: Yeeeah. Especially for bands. “We can come up with a name.”

TB: So how did you end up with “Army Girls”?

CE: I saw someone on the street who was… she was a girl wearing an army jacket, she had a cool haircut, and I just went, “Oh, Army Girls.”

AS: And I said yes. Because—

CE: He said, “I don’t hate it.”

AS: Yeah. “I don’t hate it,” and, “Let’s use that and get it out of the way and continue.”

CE: Yeah. Like try coming up with a band name right now.

TB: Uh, I was going to say Army Ants, but that’s probably because Army Girls is right in front of me.

CE: And I thought The Macaroni and Cheese in my head.

AS: That could work, you know?

TB: More stuff in the kitchen!

CE: Yeah!

AS: It’s all about the kitchen.

CE: It’s hard.

TB: Makes sense. So you’re here for Kazoo! Fest. How did that get set up?

AS: Email, basically.

CE: Well, we got asked to play Wavelength Music Festival in Toronto last February with PS I Love You, um that was a super-super awesome show.

AS: It was a great show, yeah.

TB: Ah. And Kazoo! was a co-presenter with Wavelength this year.

CE: Well, a few of the guys who I guess run Kazoo! were at that show, and they offered us a slot in the festival that year but we I believe were out of town for that. So they followed up this year and we were happy to do it.

TB: You’re both involved in other projects. Can you talk about them and what it’s like balancing being in different bands?

AS: Well currently I’m not too involved in anything else.

TB: Aren’t you still involved in Doldrums?

AS: No, no. I only played the first eight shows back in like 2010.

TB: Oh, my mistake! I wasn’t sure so I’d actually tried to find videos of recent Doldrums gigs, and the ones I did find didn’t really give a clear view of who was on the kit, but it looked like it could be you, so I just figured it was.

CE: But his stage setup – Airick [Woodhead, a.k.a. the mastermind behind Doldrums], who’s a friend of ours – it evolves I would say like every album, but he’s super prolific and his stage requirements change a lot and so he’s always getting cool other players.

AS: Absolutely.

CE: Like our friend Steve [Foster] who I’m also in a band with, is his drummer right now.

TB: Is that DIANA?

CE: Donlands and Mortimer.

TB: Another one?

CE: Another one, yeah. [Laughs]

AS: You can’t keep up with her.

CE: Yeah. I guess I’m in three bands, which is kind of time consuming and it’s kind of confusing. There’s like a Google Calendar that nobody checks. Donlands and Mortimer is a band that I’ve been in for six years and we like to joke that we’re a reverse super group. You know how sometimes famous musicians will get together and they’ll be like, let’s start a band? Like Foo Fighters or whatever. Wait. Queens of the Stone Age.

TB: Well, Foo Fighters, too sort of, but yeah moreso Queens of the Stone Age.

Well Donlands… we all started playing together before we could play our instruments too well, and now Johnny [Spence] the keyboard player is in Tegan and Sara’s band, Steve’s in Doldrums, I’ve got this other band DIANA that’s doing really well… So yeah, it’s challenging for sure—

AS: But it’s to be expected, really.

CE: Yeah, but it’s awesome.

TB: So I was going to say both of you were at this year’s SXSW, but I guess you [Andy] were not.

AS: I was not.

TB: But you [Carmen] were there with DIANA. How was that experience, showing your music off to people that might have never heard of you before?

CE: Oh, it was super super awesome. We were on tour for the entire month opening for Tegan and Sara. We toured down to South by with them, so the entire month was kind of this huge high for us. We were super, super, super grateful and by the time we got down to South by, um… I think we were really tight as well, which, you know, felt really, really good for a band like that. Yeah. I had an amazing time at South by. I like Texas.

TB: So [Carmen], as you were saying, DIANA really took off over the winter and you went on tour with Tegan and Sara. What was that like?

CE: Oh, um, it was kind of a bad first tour to go on, because it spoiled us, and now every other tour we go on will not be as good.

TB: Did you get an extensive rider?

CE: We got a rider. And that was amazing.

TB: Did you put anything crazy on it?

CE: Batteries. Nine-volt batteries. They’re so expensive.

AS: Super Nintendo?

CE: Um, no [laughs]. We put dark chocolate on there – like 85 per cent – the good stuff, one grapefruit…

TB: I’ve actually got a pretty cool story about DIANA. My girlfriend and I went to the Long Winter show you guys played back in November for our first date. So we actually had our first dance during your set.

CE: Really?!

AS: That’s fancy.

CE: To what song? Was it like a slow jammer?

TB: All I can remember is it wasn’t “Born Again.”

CE: Might’ve been the other one, “Perpetual Surrender.” Like with the saxophone solo?

TB: Yeah! That’s totally it.

AS: Saxophone did it.

CE: Well, you’re welcome.

TB: Thank you. She’s probably going to make fun of me. I’m embarrassing. Anyway, Speaking of Long Winter and tying this back in with Army Girls, the two of you wrote and recorded your EP, Close to the Bone in 2011 with Ben Cook of Fucked Up, who presented that series. What was that process like?

CE: I knew of Ben Cook through a friend of mine, Simone TB, who’s in a band called Tropics and another called The Highest Order, and she kept throwing these Young Governor seven-inches at me and being like, “Ben Cook sings like an angel,” so I listened to a bunch of his stuff on MySpace, and agreed with her and also additionally thought that the sonic quality of his recordings was pretty similar to what I though that Army Girls should sound like on recording. So I cold called him, and he said yes, and then four hours later we have this record.

AS: It was a very good chemistry I suppose where we just kind of banged it out super quickly and it sounded kind of how we wanted it to sound.

TB: Any plans to set up some shows with his other band, Yacht Club? That’d be a good fit.

CE: Yeah. [I’d] love to play a show with Yacht Club. Actually we keep trying to book shows with Yacht Club and either we’ll pitch one or they’ll pitch one, and almost always it doesn’t fit with our schedules. But yeah, hopefully sooner rather than later. And I mean Ben Cook’s name is faithfully in every single conversation we have about who to work with in the future. We’re pretty happy with that dude in our lives.

TB: Wrapping things up, what does the future have in store for Army Girls? Any studio time lined up? Tour plans?

AS: I suppose our EP is being reissued by Blocks [Recording Club] with updated artwork—

CE: And two new tunes on it.

AS: And two new tunes. And I guess that’s kind of to-be-determined – the release date – but it’ll be available probably within a month or two, and then I guess just working towards doing our first full length.

CE: We’re writing pretty hardcore right now. We’re taking our time with it so that it sounds nice and shiny.
