Hari ini seperti biasanya, mencoba melanjutkan buat skripsi. Sepertinya mundur lagi.. hehehe.. jujur aja nih emang saya ga ada backup teori yang pasti. Agak2 tersendat, tapi yauda lah nanti juga beres. Sejumlah teori yang dipakai anak arsi buat bikin skripsi tentang stasiun juga saya coba sintesis buat bahan.. hehe..

Ga cuma itu, saya hari ini mencari2 software untuk unlock pdf restriction. Atau biasanya sih disebut password remover (yang kenyataannya ga begitu). Umumnya pdf biasa bisa dibuka dengan langsung, dan isinya dapat dicopy maupun di snapshot. Kalo pdf yang ada restriction, ada tulisan (protected) dan jika di buka umumnya ga bisa di copy/snapshot. Beda lagi kalo yang di password, sejak dibuka udah diminta password nya. Dari semua software yang sudah saya coba, menurut saya A-PDF Password Security yang paling bagus. Opsi nya banyak, bisa batch (sekaligus banyak) juga. Cuma yang saya belum dapet sih yang integrated ama windows explorer nya, jadi tinggal klik kanan buat unlock gitu.

Selain itu saya juga mencoba pakai OCR dari scanner saya. Software standar dari CD Epson TX111 adalah Newsoft MaxReader 4.5, namun saya menggunakan Nuance Omnipage 17, yang katanya merupakan software OCR terbaik. Oke, pas di coba memang ga terbaik2 banget, at least hasilnya memang ga 100% akurat. Tapi bagus kok, maybe karena memang scanned object saya kurang bagus juga. Sebagai contoh saya mencoba OCR daftar perjalanan kereta api, it works, though maybe layout nya agak aneh makanya jadi ga 100% akurat, selain juga karena bahasa indonesia mungkin dictionary nya agak bingung.

Also saya mencoba Google Earth Plus 5. Selama ini saya selalu menggunakan Google Earth 4.2 Pro dengan pertimbangan Google Earth Pro dapat menghitung area dan perimeter, serta dapat menyimpan gambar dalam resolusi maksimum 4800×4800. Namun ternyata saat ini Google Earth 5 juga bisa melakukan tersebut, dan tidak harus versi Pro, ternyata versi Plus saja sudah dapat melakukan dua hal yang saya sebutkan di atas. Selain itu Google Earth 5 memang memiliki sejumlah kelebihan seperti navigasi GPS, hingga Pilot Mode. Namun ada sedikit problem, ternyata peta di Google Earth 5 lebih update dibanding peta google earth 4.2. Tapi yang ada malah peta Stasiun Bekasi yang ingin saya ambil lebih gelap warnanya, mungkin waktu snapshot dari satelit pas lagi mendung kali ya.. hehe.. :p Memang lebih bagus hasil dari Yahoo Maps sih, warnanya cerah dan lebih tajam dibandingkan gambar dari Google Earth, hanya saja karena tidak ada aplikasinya, untuk menyimpan file hanya dapat dilakukan dengan print screen dan terbatas resolusi layar.

Kok banyakan eksperimen software nya ya dibanding bikin skripsi.. pantesan ga jadi2.. Hehe.. emang sih, tapi ya saya fun kok melakukannya. Nambah ilmu aja, cuma ya buat jaga2 saya tulis di blog nih, berabe kan kalo pikun saya kambuh.. hehe.. Just Feels Like My Abso-bloody-lutely World..

Hoy no he visto tele mientras comía después de llegar de trabajar a casa. Directamente me he ido a comprobar unas cosillas en Google Maps a propósito del viaje que estoy preparando. Y concretamente me interesaban las vistas de satélite del centro de Basilea, Suiza. Por ver la orientación con respecto al sol de determinados lugares… cosas que tenemos los aficionados a la fotografía.

Pero he aquí que no funcionaba correctamente la vista de satélite. Y por lo tanto, no acababa de aclararme con lo que yo quería. Así que he decidido pasarme momentáneamente a la competencia. Me he ido a ver la imagen que me ofrecía Yahoo! Mapas. Y lo que he obtenido era lo siguiente…

Ejem,… ¿esperamos a que se vaya el nublado? En ese momento, ya me acompañaba una amiga que ha comenzado a partirse el pecho de la risa diciendo cosas como…

Tira, tira, aumenta el zoom, hasta que te pongas debajo de la nube.

Así, contritos, hemos vuelto a probar con Google Maps, y aquí ya nos ha aparecido lo siguiente…

Otra cuestión añadida. Las imágenes que he puesto están más o menos a la misma escala. Pero mientras en Yahoo! Mapas era el máximo aumento disponible, en Google Maps todavía nos podíamos acercar más.

Es obvio que Google Maps también tiene sus problemas. A la primera, no ha salido; pero el problema es pasajero. Ahora bien… las nubes que ensombrecen el futuro de Yahoo!,… parecen más duraderas. Creo que con el único servicio de Yahoo! con el que me siento a gusto es Flickr,… pero es que no lo inventaron en ellos y lo han modificado poco.

Os dejo con otra vista de Suiza, tomada por mí en Lugano, con nubes… pero en el lado correcto.

Melakukan traveling hari ini sangatlah mudah dibandingkan dengan traveling saat zaman Ibnu Batuta, Marcopolo atau Cheng Ho. Hari ini, untuk melakukan perjalanan cukup dengan persiapan sebuah laptop yang terhubung dengan internet. Booking tiket pesawat or kereta via internet. Booking penginapan dan tour via internet pula. Cari-cari informasi gimana keadaan tempat tujuan via internet juga.

Selain itu, dengan menggunakan internet kita bisa mengakses bergelimang orang-orang yang mau share gimana keadaan tempat tujuan. Tidak sedikit pula orang yang mau jadi host, menawarkan kamarnya secara gratis, bahkan makanan dan internet gratis. Selain itu, host bisa mengantarkan tamu untuk jalan-jalan di sekitar tempat tinggalnya.

Sebelum berangkat, kita bisa tandain posisi koordinat penginapan dan objek-objek tujuan. Dengan menggunakan Google Maps atau Yahoo Maps atau Nokia Maps, kita bisa bersimulasi melakukan trip sesuai itinerary yang telah dibuat.

Persiapan sudah siap, saatnya bagi kita untuk bergerak. Packing. Jangan lupa bawa alat-alat bantu buat traveling: buku sejenis Lonely Planet (kalau punya, mahal sih), kamera, notebook atau netbook dan handphone.

Handphone jenis smartphone lumayan penting saat traveling. Sekarang, smartphone sudah dilengkapi dengan perangkat GPS. Kalau smartphone Nokia, tinggal install Nokia Maps. Kemudian pastikan pastikan peta objek tujuan dan penginapan kita sudah terdownload di Nokia Maps. Kalau peta tujuan traveling kita tidak tersedia di Nokia Maps, coba install pula Google Maps. Mungkin peta Google Maps lebih lengap.

Nokia Maps vs Google Maps

Peta di aplikasi Nokia Maps bisa didownload dalam memori handphone. Sehingga tidak diperlukan koneksi internet ketika kita membuka peta di Nokia Maps. Pada saat persiapan, pastikan peta tujuan sudah ada di Nokia Maps. Caranya kalau saya, kartu SIM diganti ke IM2 lalu download peta dengan koneksi internet IM2. Setelah peta terdownload ke memori handphone, saya ganti lagi ke kartu SIM awal, kalau saya, SIMPATI.

Berbeda dengan Nokia Maps, peta di Google Maps tak bisa didownload ke memori hape, peta mungkin di simpan di Cache Memory saja, gatau juga sebesar apa cache memorynya. Kelemahannya, pulsa kita akan habis untuk mendownload peta yang belum terdownload.

Namun demikian, Google Maps memiliki satu keunggulan ketika kita melaukan traveling berkelompok. Ada aplikasi yang disebut Google Latitude. Google Latitude bisa melihat posisi kawan kita ada di mana. Sehingga kita akan mudah mencari posisi teman tersebut, selama dia mendapatkan sinyal GPS.

Nah karena Google Maps menyedot pulsa, lebih baik, kita beli nomor SIM lokal di negara yang kita datangi agar biaya donwload GPRSnya lebih murah. Oleh karena itu, yaknikan smartphone Anda unlocked, bisa menggunakan kartu SIM apapun.

Adapun kesamaan Google Maps dan Nokia Maps adalah, keduanya bisa menunjukan direksi dari satu tempat ke tempat lain. Direksinya ada dua bisa dengan kendaraan ataupun jalan kaki. Lumayan membantu lah.

This morning I went to a very good beta presentation by Ken Fisher from clickforhelp.com about how Government can make it’s way into the social media space. What was going to be a simple run through of his presentation became a quite active discussion concerning not only how he can improve his presentation for Wednesday, but also about government communications in general. This being a local oriented blog (although sparse so far — sorry guys and gals new job and the need to learn new rules that apply to me and lobbying), the question then becomes how to apply these concepts to the local government.

Let me step back for a while to give some background for why this event was going on in the first place.

With the new administration in the White House, the directive to the departments was that government will be transparent to the public. There are a phethora of software applications available to enable communication both within a department and to those outside of a department. But unfortunately, the mechanism of communication tends to get more debate than the actual content. Too often Government and other organizations see a new technology and say, “We really need to get into this so we look hip, cool and relevant.” The only problem with this is that if the focus is on the medium, then little thought gets put into what is actually communicated.

I’ve been a netizen since the days before the web browser. I was also in the BBS world before the Internet was really public. So I’ve seen a lot of good content and a ton of crappy content. Most gov sites are pretty bad. Unless you know what it is that you are looking for, it’s pretty confusing to get to real data. Usually you just get to some sorry excuses for a message. A lot of fluff and not a lot of depth. Zzzzz…

The good news is that there’s a lot of great content out there. Even from government agencies. Blogger Bob and the TSA is a great example of this. Bob has a great personality and he’s got a great way of delivering a message: Short, precise and to the point. The sheer force of his personality and willingness to show how new technology impacts the TSA and the public has made him semi-famous within the blogosphere on the whole. In fact, that was one of Ken’s points today. Putting a face to the message improves it’s reception. This is in contrast to other sites that are just a bunch of anonymous people that do not have a personal relationship with their audience.

Howard County also has the Snowplow Tracking site, which is a pure bundle of awesome that can use some improvement, but is basically done. More on that later.

On the other hand, more traditional reports and other authoritative communications should be from the department as a whole. These would be the dry, wonky reports that I personally get a kick out of, but a personality on top of it explaining what it means helps put some of that data into a digestible format.

The question becomes, how does government communicate with themselves and the public. More importantly, how do the people communicate back?

I can go on and on about methods of communication without getting down to actual content. The main point of my argument that was beginning to form this morning, but is beginning to gel into a more cohesive argument as I’m writing this, is that in order for a technology that is used to communicate to the public, needs to be used within an internal silo first.

Twitter? Build a Laconica server first for internal office communications. Let people use it within a department first. The benefit is that co-workers can post questions and get answers back from others in the department. This can be really useful for groups that are spread out over the country. And people absorb information differently, so someone can ask, “does anyone know about …” and someone can post a set of links to that very topic. If they’re the author of a particular document, they can also get some instant feedback and corrections. The point is that it’s easy to build and push out. It’s also a way to enable communication within the organization. The most important thing is it allows people to get used to a new technology within a familiar environment. That’s what pretty much happened with email. It starts locally then goes global. Once the mindset is established, then the PR folks can start disseminating info in a meaningful way because they worked out the bugs in communication within the org first.

Then there’s the idea of mashable content. Government is very good at collecting a ton of raw data and putting it into a manageable format. However, the raw data streams are often hard to get for those outside of that particular project. Transparency also means making that raw data available for people to create other views. This can be as simple as developing a common API so third parties can develop applications to display that data in new ways. With enough ingenuity, someone can create an app that correlates census data with unemployment rates for instance. And better yet, government workers can use those other apps to do their own work.

So how does this translate to the local government? Well let’s take my previous example of the HoCo Snowplow Tracker. The page uses it’s API internally and is not publicly accessible. If the API was released, not really knowing how the data is formatted, I can still surmise that a number of apps can be developed that takes in just the text data stream and use it’s own mapping software to display that data. I can then take that data and make an iPhone app, or one for the Nokia, or Google maps, or Yahoo! Maps. I could also overlay weather data within that map. Or I can also set up links to the traffic cameras and know when to watch te plow going past my local intersection. I can also send feedback to the crews with geotagged data and report icy conditions and other problem spots. It would also take off some of the load to the server when it comes to processing this data and pushing it off to the local client to make sense of the data.

Half a decade ago, the big name in web maps was MapQuest. You wanted directions, you went to MapQuest. You wanted maps, maybe with satellite imagery? MapQuest was the only place to go. These days, though, every other mapping website lives in the shadow of one runaway success: Google Maps. And for good reasons, too: Google maps has better coverage, better browser support, a better interface, and much better satellite imagery.

And really, the satellite imagery is what a lot of people come for. Everyone knows it’s fun to look up your house, or for that matter, somebody else’s, and see what it looks like from space. (Usually, it looks like a roof. Not much, really. But bear with me.) Google’s satellite imagery is not only on average a lot newer than the competition’s (1-3 years old, compared to 2-3 years old on Live Maps and 4-5 years old on Yahoo Maps), it’s a lot clearer. And see that picture above? That was taken with a new high-image-quality satellite that Google has exclusive rights to the images from.

Google also leads, though, in map and directory coverage. Google has full maps of Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, the UK, and the United States, while Live Maps only has the United States, Canada, the UK, Germany, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and India. And Live Maps doesn’t even cover the northern Canadian territories. Not that anybody cares, but still.

Google’s browser support is better (6 supported browsers vs. 3 or 4), and their mobile device support is outstanding. Google Maps is built into every one of the twelve million iPhones out there. They’re faster, easier, and a whole lot better looking than the competition. Plus, they have Street View. (Imagine how cool it would be to have street view, and turn-by-turn directions, on the iPhone.)

Sure, Live Maps has 3D features that Google Maps doesn’t. But they require a special browser plugin that’s slow to install and slow to use. You might as well download the free Google Earth, which provides a far better 3D experience. While Google might not have been the first to come up with webmail, GMail now outshines the competition by far; I think Google Maps will be doing the same thing before long.
