Google’s getting pats on the back for a new tool that lets webmasters tell the search engine w

Google’s getting pats on the back for a new tool that lets webmasters tell the search engine when a site’s been moved to a new domain. According to Google’s Webmasters/Site owners Help documentation, if you use the change of address tool, the Google index will be updated to reflect your new domain for 180 days. Before those 180 days are up, Googlebot will have come by to crawl and index pages at the new domain and — voila! — your new site will be forever present in the only search engine that matters. [Yay! --Susan]

It’s great to hear that at least one task is being simplified for overloaded SEOs, but Google’s convenient shortcut may have some unintended consequences. First of all, Google’s not the only search engine. Submitting your new domain through Google’s handy new tool is notgoing to affect the index of engines like Yahoo, Bing and Ask. (Rocket scientist here, I know.)

And second, while Google may be the big guy on campus today, that may not be the case tomorrow. Taking shortcuts can have a nasty habit of coming back to bite you. Just because Google’s created an easy domain-change-submission process, that shouldn’t be an excuse to ignore your responsibilities in optimizing a site for all the engines. After all, we’re talking about search engine optimization and not Google optimization. Although, GO would be a pretty catchy title…

Anyway, if you catch my drift and you want to make sure your new site’s sitting pretty with more than just Big G, check out this simple instructional on what to do after you’ve moved your site.

What to Do After Moving a Site

We recommend that all Web sites include an XML Sitemap. XML Sitemaps are used by search engines to find all the pages on a site. More information on XML Sitemaps guidelines and what XML Sitemaps are used for can be found in the SEO Newsletter archives. XML Sitemaps can be generated at http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/.

With your new site chilling until the search engines stop by, you’ll want to submit the new domain’s XML Sitemap to each engine according to its specific procedures. Now that I’ve explained what to do, here’s thehow.

This week I created a website so I could play around with SEO. Given my base understanding of how

This week I created a website so I could play around with SEO. Given my base understanding of how SEO works coupled with what I have been reading, this seemed like a good way to test me.

So like, I failed the first test. As in, I thought I could see instant results when I set this up. Wrong. Google crawling doesn’t happen overnight. In fact, it can take weeks for the search engines to even find your site and rank where it will fall in the natural search. And part of the criteria is the age of the site, so there’s no way around that variable either. The fact that I just went to the site linked above — and admitted it — is a frightening admission of ignorance.

A little late to do something else as I’m going up north again for the yute’s spring break. I’m still going to use my site to illustrate how I fumbled, bumbled and stumbled through the secret world of SEO.

In the most generic sense, I understood that the more relevance and prominence of key phrases will drive up your ranking. In my case, I picked what I thought was phrase that wouldn’t even be searched. Nutjob. Specifically, nutjobs in Royal Oak. Mon dieu, there are actually other sites that come up for both nutjobs AND Royal Oak. As in past posts, I once again say why? “WHY WOULD ANYONE SEARCH THE TERM NUTJOB ROYAL OAK?”

Hate all caps, but couldn’t think of another way to describe my furled brow. A dad of a kid I coach in hockey always sends me emails in all caps. WHAT TIME IS PRACTICE COACH? GREAT GAME LAST NIGHT. BILLY’S GOING TO THE DENTIST. MY BOTTOM HURTS. Okay, I get the point. He types like he behaves in the stands. Hockey parents are a different breed altogether baby.

Next I went a step further, adding a blog, some “about me” language, and some other copy that attempted to drive the keywords. Even signed my own guest book. Also tried to include some rather manic prose on what exactly a nutjob is and why it’s salient to your needs. If someone actually does find this site I am slightly concerned about my image. Anthrax/Public Enemy “fight the power” is supposed to be the background music when the site loads — but it’s not working either.

Against my better judgement, I linked my site to my facebook and linkedin profiles. And then I did a tweet. Hopefully my front page text disclaims the complete lack of anything remotely relevant to anything. Not sure I will get anymore inbound links — unless my rabid following here and elsewhere feels compelled. I also doubt this will end up included in any directories — with the possible exception of the CIA. Great, now I have the government monitoring my blog. In fact, they are now following you. Can’t believe they have a site with flash and a video. Two “whys” in one blog.

Then I decided I needed to start playing with HTML. A brand new frontier which reminds of DOS. or is this DOS? I built my site on a free site, so it was a major struggle figuring out how to embed the HTML anywhere. Now again, i’m getting a bit loose throwing out the phrases “code, HTML and embed”. I had to walk through the google analytics tutorial to learn how to track my site’s performance. I read that you should have the analytics set up before launching so you can better track and adjust your SEO. I was eventually successful getting the tracking code on my main page — and then started to paste in metatags. Again, this is a very basic site program so I’m not entirely sure i did this right. But for the purpose of learning, “let’s just assume I did, cool Derek?” I’m told I get 5 extra points every time I mention and link to him. You want traffic governor? Here ya go.

I was able to register my site with Yahoo Site Explorer and also did a scan through Google Optimizer. Tried to add a bunch of code to do an A/B test that allows you to compare content variations. Seemed like a good idea. Until it sent the site sideways with code and java errors — sending me sideways thinking that i had killed hours of work. Luckily there was a “restore option”. I almost did a snagit screen shot from the optimizer site to illustrate just how many red error messages you can fit on one screen. Amityville horror. Red everywhere.

I tried to use a few other tools like Firefox Rank Checker. In fact, I tried using a boatload of tools. I’m using the word “try” a lot in this blog. I blew, er, spent way too many hours playing with different tools and in most cases, didn’t get any love from these at all. More to learn as I am absolutely certain I’m going to get someone, somewhere, to inquire about buying a nutjob.

This is my niece. She’s got an attitude which makes me smile every time.

Think of this as Yahoo’s equivalent to Google’s Webmaster Tools. It’s a much simpler interface and provides a lot less information than what Google has to offer, but it’s still worth it.

To get your blog verified you’ll have to follow a similar procedure to getting it verified with Google Webmaster Tools. Create a page with the title that you get from the Yahoo Site Explorer page and place the other code in the content. After that all you have to do is wait about 24 hours and it will be completed.

I’ve recently been researching Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and come across a great tool called SEOQuake. SEOQuake is available as a plug in for Firefox 3.0 and also for download for other browsers at www.seoquake.com. The tool pulls information from Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, and other services. Overall, the SEOQuake tool provides users with valuable “one-stop” SEO information.

SEOQuake provides quick links to the Google Page Rank, number of in-directing links, the url of in-directing links, the number of landing pages to a given website, the number of links to internal pages, the number of external links on a page, and other valuable information optimizing search engine rankings. My favorite SEOQuake link is to Yahoo’s Site Explorer, which provides the location of all in-directing links. I utilize the Yahoo Site Explorer tool by targeting an identified keyword. I Google search the identified keyword, and start by clicking on the highest ranked link; once the highest ranked page loads I click the Yahoo Site Explorer link from the SEOQuake toolbar and a new tab opens with the listing of the pages with in-directing links. I then analyze the websites with the in-directing links and look for opportunities to create in-directing links from these pages to my website. I repeat this process with the second highest website for the target keyword and continue through the top ranked sites. I call this technique “Competitor Capture Link Building.”

Competitor Capture Link Building is one of many uses for the SEOQuake tool. Please share your thoughts on Competitive Capture Link Building, other link building techniques and ways you use SEOQuake to optimize your search engine rankings.

The following is cross-posted on a new blog called PNeo. Watch out for more cross-posts as well as insights, observations and analysis from the digital team at Porter Novelli, my employer.

Right now, people are talking about you, your brand, your products, your services and your competitors online. The problem is that you don’t know what they’re saying or maybe even how to listen.

And it is a problem. Everyone wants to know what’s being said about them, not least clients. In the immediate term you need to fulfil their expectation.

But when you’ve done this you can really start adding value. You can provide both qualitative and quantitative analyses, by monitoring conversations and recognising patterns of ‘online buzz’.

Go further: you can start to engage in the community of influencers, realise opportunities for working with them. Meanwhile, internally you build up a great body of knowledge across accounts. Just think about all the benefits you get from your media relations. Same applies with bloggers.

But, let’s be clear: online is different. Given the vast number of online conversations happening throughout the blogosphere and the wider web every day, it’s impossible to, say, compile clipping books and analyse them in any traditional, ‘offline’ way.

This is why large organisations are dedicated to measuring influence, authority, buzz – whatever you want to call it. They employ sophisticated and expensive tools to do this. Using them requires a huge commitment of resource.

So, this is the Practical DIY approach. This is what you can do, quickly and easily and now, to get an idea of who you should be listening to.

Before you continue you need to find out what people are talking about by identifying your keywords. I’ve already covered this, so take a look at that post first.

When you’ve identified your keywords, look for them online to find out who is talking about them and by definition, you.

Here’s how:

Google – can be your first port of call. Google’s good in that it already ranks pages for you – the higher a page in a Google Search, the more relevant it is. You can be confident that if you search for your keywords on Google, it’ll give you a good set of results from ‘the web’.

Wikipedia – is good for identifying influential figures and brands with good links to other sources. It’s not the absolute truth but a better edited version than random sources.

Boardreader – specifically searches forums and community boards and provides a nice threaded layout so you can quickly see the extent of conversations about a specific topic.

Facebook – can contain groups and pages about your keywords. If someone has taken the time to set up such a group or page about topics you’re looking for, it means they care about it.

Digg – is a news site where people vote for news items. The more votes an item gets, the higher it is ranked. It’s a great source for finding out what humans think. So, put your keywords in Digg, find news items that people think are worth reading, then find out who those people are. They are people who are interested enough in you to have voted for you.

Del.icio.us – also uses human beings to rank its content. Del.icio.us is where people can share their bookmarks. It’s like when you bookmark something on a browser, except that it’s stored on the website where other people can see it, and you identify it tags so other people know what it’s about. As with Digg, it’s a way of tapping into what people are reading.

Blog searches – are great for finding – guess what – bloggers. They are good sources because, whereas Digg and del.icio.us show a perhaps passing interest through voting or tagging, a blogger might be spending more time thinking about you, offering analysis and comment. So, go through your keywords, and pick from the search results. We’ve already covered Google, and it does something similar with its Google Blog Search. Technorati is similar.

Another handy tip: when you find a blog, it might have a list of other bloggers that it links to, on its home page, called a blogroll. This is really useful because it points you directly to other people in this blogger’s ‘community’.

Google Groups – are another good source of searchable online conversation, often between highly knowledgeable members.

When you’ve been through all your keywords on all the searches, you will have a list. If someone appears as a result of these searches, chances are they’re fairly influential. If they don’t, they’re not.

This is a good start, but you might have dozens of them, or even hundreds. You have no idea who, among this set, is worth listening to.

So, rank them.

Just go to Yahoo Site Explorer, type in the web address, and make a note of the number of Inlinks. An inlink shows how many links come into a site, and gives an idea of how many people considered it to be important enough to link to. This works for pretty much any site you will ever find.

You can go one step further for blogs. Technorati provides a figure showing how many blogs uniquely link to another blog. That is, if one blog has 20 links to another, it’s just counted once. This gives a good indication of the number of blogs, not links, that regard a blog as important or interesting enough to endorse. It’s called Technorati Authority.

When you’ve done this you can rank them in, say, Excel.

So, you now have a list that is much more manageable. From ‘the web’, you went to a flat list, and now you have a ranked list to focus on. These are your online opinion leaders.

Don’t forget, this is just your DIY approach. If you want to dig deep then you’ll need to talk to one of the dedicated companies that provide such a service – for a fee.

So you have your list of opinion formers. What happens now? Well, you should start monitoring them, both qualitatively (what are they talking about?) and quantitatively (how many of them are talking about it?).

But, as I keep saying, that’s for another post!

Här kan du i rullgardinen “Show inlinks” välja “Except from this domain”. Då filtrerar du bort dina interna länkar, som YSE tolkar som inlinks.

Tips!

Gå till: http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/

Sök domännamn (t.ex. www.aftonbladet.se)

Klicka på “Inlinks”

I rullgardinen “show inlinks” välj ”Except from this domain”

I rullgardinen ”to:” välj “Entire site”

Eller klicka direkt på denna länk
