Putting Jobs First
This N.Y. Times article endorsed by: Robert E. McCullough B.A., Arch.

The $154 billion jobs bill passed by the House last week will allow the 217 Democrats who voted for it to tell their constituents that they care about unemployment. But it’s unlikely to do much else. The Senate will not address the issue until next year. By then, midterm election politics will be coming into full swing, with Democrats calling for more jobs and Republicans fanning voter fears about deficits.

The real challenge — for President Obama and for Congressional Democrats — is to not get bogged down in that debate but rather to make job creation the undisputed priority for 2010.

Right now, finding people work is a more urgent task than reducing the deficit. Indeed, deficits cannot be tamed without more jobs to generate more tax revenue. A government boost to job growth is also necessary to help replace the millions of jobs that have been lost in the recession.

Perhaps most important, without a revival in hiring, the economy itself — which appears to be recovering — could regress. A second contraction could be worse than the first, bringing a downward spiral of falling wages, falling prices and even higher unemployment. With interest rates at rock bottom and other market interventions already deployed, policy makers would have few weapons left.

The House bill has strong features. It would extend unemployment benefits, now set to expire in February, through June. It would also increase aid to states and local governments. These are the bedrocks of any jobs program because, by increasing demand, they help preserve and create jobs.

But with joblessness at record levels, unemployment benefits should be extended even further — to the end of the year. Similarly, the stimulus plan for the states should be extended well into 2011; otherwise, federal aid will dry up midway through most states’ fiscal years, leaving them vulnerable to a relapse.

The House bill has other good provisions, including programs to spur small business lending and increase infrastructure spending. But what is most needed now is presidential leadership to get these and other job-creation programs enacted. Piecemeal measures — serial extensions of jobless benefits, for instance — are vital, but they are unlikely to inspire the enthusiasm and confidence necessary for a self-sustaining recovery to take hold.

Focusing on job creation does not mean playing down the deficit. President Obama must assure the nation — and its foreign lenders — that major legislative initiatives like health care reform will be credibly paid for and that Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy will not be extended beyond their scheduled expiration in 2010. And at some point, he will have to ask for new taxes and more spending restraint. But, for the moment, jobs come first.

Reconnecting Young People

The House’s jobs bill is an honorable effort to increase jobs among construction workers, teachers, firefighters and other adults — hence its name, the Jobs for Main Street Act. But it is seriously deficient in one important respect. It does not do nearly enough to address the ominous shortfall of jobs among the young people who have been driven from the job market — and marginalized economically — in record numbers.

The problem is especially alarming in low-income, minority communities where the jobless rate for high school students is hovering near 90 percent.

The part-time jobs that were once a rite of passage began to disappear rapidly at the start of this decade. According to an analysis released this week by Andrew Sum, director of Northeastern University’s Center for Labor Market Studies, employment rates among teenagers have dropped nearly four times faster than the rate among adults since 2000.

As a consequence, he says, men 65 and older — people old enough to be their grandfathers — are now more likely to find work than 16- to 19-year-olds.

According to the analysis, the joblessness rate for teenagers generally is the highest ever since the country began keeping statistics just after World War II. Things are especially bleak for low-income black students: only 4 in 100 found work this fall.

This is worrisome on several counts. First, young people who do not find work tend to become discouraged early on and stop trying. They fail to develop the work force skills that make them attractive to employers, which means that they are likely to remain unemployed or underemployed well into their adult years.

People who do not find work in their early years also have higher dropout rates and are more likely to commit crimes — meaning they are at higher risk of becoming permanent burdens to society.

Earlier this month, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a think tank representing developed nations, urged the federal government to take steps to keep young people from dropping out of the job market. Most importantly, it called on federal officials to do a better job of reaching out to “disconnected youth” with training and support that helps them find work.

The House’s jobs bill includes some commendable employment provisions for young people. But what’s needed, Mr. Sum and others say, is a broader, coordinated stimulus plan that would reach disengaged inner-city teenagers who are increasingly being left out of the economy.

Given the risks of doing nothing, Congress would be wise to consider the idea.

With an apparent deal in the works, the United States Senate is about to offer America a Christmas snow job that will initiate a blizzard of bureaucracies, mandates, taxes, fees, Medicare cuts and state budget busting regulations that will turn American healthcare it into a Soviet style government health management process.

With over a hundred new panels, boards, agencies, commissions, divisions and government entities, the Senate version of Obamacare assures the hiring of a hundred thousand new government employees, all of who will be managing your health————or at least how and when you can get health care.

All of this promises to increase the national debt, degrade the quality of care, create a shortage medical professionals and caregivers, increase premiums, tax businesses, grow the size of the federal deficit, cut Medicare to senior citizens, initiate unfunded mandates that will prove to budget busters for states, and place government bureaucrats between doctors and their patients. And let us not forget another small thing———– it’s also not constitutional.

Contrary to President Obama’s promise for transparency and a process that will hammer together a healthcare reform bill that we will see take place on C-Span, both the House and Senate reform bills were pieced together behind closed doors and with the use of more deal making and arm twisting than you saw take place in an entire season of The Sopranos. Democrat lawmakers were bribed with taxpayer dollars as some had entire sections of the of the over 2,000 page bill written strictly for the purpose of providing certain liberal lawmakers with hundreds of millions of dollars in return for their vote.

Now, without any transparency and without posting the final bill online for the promised 72 hours of public scrutiny, Harry “The Pimp” Reid wants to rush a vote on heathscare reform before Santa shimmies down his first chimney.

This Christmas , Democrats are simply leaving a lump of coal in your stocking and calling it gold.

Well it’s time to pull the wool off your eyes America——————Senate shysters are about to steal more than your Christmas. They’re getting ready to bum rush Santa, shoot his reindeer, and hijack his sleigh. Then, they plan on going home for the holidays.

Wernher Magnus Maximilian Freiherr[1] von Braun (March 23, 1912 – June 16, 1977) was a German rocket physicist, astronautics engineer, and space architect, becoming one of the leading figures in the development of rocket technology in Germany and the United States. Wernher von Braun is sometimes said to be the preeminent rocket engineer of the 20th century.[2]

In his 20s and early 30s, von Braun was the central figure in Germany’s pre-war rocket development program, responsible for the design and realization of the deadly V-2 combat rocket during World War II. After the war, he and some of his rocket team were taken to the United States as part of the then-secret Operation Paperclip. In 1955, ten years after entering the country, von Braun became a naturalized U.S. citizen.
(The beginning of “OPERATION TROJAN HORSE” designed by Adolf Hitler himself to make German technology take over the planet Earth to enslave humanity.)

Von Braun worked on the American intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) program before joining NASA, where he served as director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and the chief architect of the Saturn V launch vehicle, the superbooster that propelled the Apollo spacecraft to the Moon.[3] In the words of NASA, he is “without doubt, the greatest rocket scientist in history. His crowning achievement … was to lead the development of the Saturn V booster rocket that helped land the first men on the Moon in July 1969.”[4] He received the 1975 National Medal of Science.

[edit] Biography
[edit] Early life

Wernher von Braun was born in Wirsitz (Wyrzysk), Province of Posen, then a part of the German Empire, and was the second of three sons. He belonged to a minor aristocratic family, inheriting the German title of Freiherr (equivalent to Baron). His father, conservative civil servant Magnus Freiherr von Braun (1877–1972), served as a Minister of Agriculture in the Federal Cabinet during the Weimar Republic. His mother, Emmy von Quistorp (1886–1959), could trace her ancestry through both parents to medieval European royalty. Von Braun had a younger brother, also named Magnus Freiherr von Braun.[5] After Wernher von Braun’s Lutheran confirmation, his mother gave him a telescope, and he developed a passion for astronomy. When Wyrzysk returned to Poland at the end of World War I, his family, like many other German families, moved to Germany. They settled in Berlin, where 12-year-old von Braun, inspired by speed records established by Max Valier and Fritz von Opel,[6] caused a major disruption in a crowded street by detonating a toy wagon to which he had attached a number of fireworks. He was taken into custody by the local police until his father came to collect him.

Von Braun was an accomplished amateur musician who could play from memory Beethoven and Bach. Von Braun learned to play the cello and the piano at an early age and originally wanted to become a composer. He took lessons from Paul Hindemith, the famous composer. The few pieces of von Braun’s youthful compositions that exist are reminiscent of Hindemith’s style.[7]

Beginning in 1925, von Braun attended a boarding school at Ettersburg castle near Weimar where he did not do well in physics and mathematics. In 1928 his parents moved him to the Hermann-Lietz-Internat (also a residential school) on the East Frisian North Sea island of Spiekeroog. There he acquired a copy of Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen (1929) (By Rocket into Interplanetary Space) (in German) OCLC 6026491 by rocket pioneer Hermann Oberth. Space travel had always fascinated von Braun, and from then on he applied himself to physics and mathematics to pursue his interest in rocketry.

In 1930 he attended the Technical University of Berlin, where he joined the Verein für Raumschiffahrt (VfR, the “Spaceflight Society”) and assisted Willy Ley in his liquid-fueled rocket motor tests in conjunction with Hermann Oberth[8]. He also studied at ETH Zurich. Although he worked mainly on military rockets in his later years there, space travel remained his primary interest.

Von Braun was working on his creative doctorate when the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP, or Nazi party) was elected to power in Germany, and rocketry almost immediately became a national agenda. An artillery captain, Walter Dornberger, arranged an Ordnance Department research grant for him, and von Braun then worked next to Dornberger’s existing solid-fuel rocket test site at Kummersdorf. He was awarded a doctorate in physics[9] (aerospace engineering) on July 27, 1934 from the University of Berlin for a thesis titled About Combustion Tests; his doctoral advisor was Erich Schumann.[10] However, this thesis was only the public part of von Braun’s work. His actual full thesis, Construction, Theoretical, and Experimental Solution to the Problem of the Liquid Propellant Rocket (dated April 16, 1934) was kept classified by the army, and was not published until 1960.[11] By the end of 1934, his group had successfully launched two rockets that rose to heights of 2.2 and 3.5 kilometers.

At the time, Germany was highly interested in American physicist Robert H. Goddard’s research. Before 1939, German scientists occasionally contacted Goddard directly with technical questions. Wernher von Braun used Goddard’s plans from various journals and incorporated them into the building of the Aggregat (A) series of rockets. The A-4 rocket is the well known V-2.[12] In 1963, von Braun reflected on the history of rocketry, and said of Goddard’s work: “His rockets … may have been rather crude by present-day standards, but they blazed the trail and incorporated many features used in our most modern rockets and space vehicles.”[6] Goddard confirmed his work was used by von Braun in 1944, shortly before the Nazis began firing V-2s at England. A V2 crashed in Sweden and some parts sent to an Annapolis lab where Goddard was doing research for the Navy. If this was the so-called Bäckebo Bomb, it had been procured by the British in exchange for Spitfires; Annapolis would have received some parts from them. Goddard is reported to have recognized components which he had invented and inferred that his brain child had been turned into a weapon.[13]

There were no German rocket societies after the collapse of the VFR, and civilian rocket tests were forbidden by the new Nazi regime. Only military development was allowed and to this end, a larger facility was erected at the village of Peenemünde in northern Germany on the Baltic Sea. This location was chosen partly on the recommendation of von Braun’s mother, who recalled her father’s duck-hunting expeditions there. Dornberger became the military commander at Peenemünde, with von Braun as technical director. In collaboration with the Luftwaffe, the Peenemünde group developed liquid-fuel rocket engines for aircraft and jet-assisted takeoffs. They also developed the long-range A-4 ballistic missile and the supersonic Wasserfall anti-aircraft missile.

In November 1937 (other sources: December 1, 1932), von Braun joined the National Socialist German Workers Party. An Office of Military Government, United States document dated April 23, 1947, states that von Braun joined the Waffen-SS (Schutzstaffel) horseback riding school in 1933, then the National Socialist Party on May 1, 1937, and became an officer in the Waffen-SS from May 1940 until the end of the war.

Amongst his comments about his NSDAP membership von Braun has said:

I was officially demanded to join the National Socialist Party. At this time (1937) I was already technical director of the Army Rocket Center at Peenemünde … My refusal to join the party would have meant that I would have to abandon the work of my life. Therefore, I decided to join. My membership in the party did not involve any political activities … in Spring 1940, one SS-Standartenführer (SS Colonel) Müller … looked me up in my office at Peenemünde and told me that Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler had sent him with the order to urge me to join the SS. I called immediately on my military superior … Major-General W. Dornberger. He informed me that … if I wanted to continue our mutual work, I had no alternative but to join.[14]

That claim has been often disputed because in 1940, the Waffen-SS had shown no interest in Peenemünde yet[15]. Also, the assertion that persons in von Braun’s position were pressured to join the Nazi party, let alone the SS, has been disputed.[16] When shown a picture of him behind Himmler, Braun claimed to have worn the SS uniform only that time, but in 2002 a former SS officer at Peenemünde told the BBC that von Braun had regularly worn the SS uniform to official meetings but that it was a mandatory requirement[17] He began as an Untersturmführer (Second Lieutenant) and was promoted three times by Himmler, the last time in June 1943 to SS-Sturmbannführer (Wehrmacht Major). Von Braun claimed this was a technical promotion received each year regularly by mail.[18]
Schematic of the A4/V2

On December 22, 1942, Adolf Hitler signed the order approving the production of the A-4 as a “vengeance weapon” and the group developed it to target London. Following von Braun’s July 7, 1943 presentation of a color movie showing an A-4 taking off, Hitler was so enthusiastic that he personally made him a professor shortly thereafter.[19] In Germany and at this time, this was an absolutely unusual promotion for an engineer who was only 31 years old.

By that time the British and Soviet intelligence agencies were aware of the rocket program and von Braun’s team at Peenemünde. Over the nights of 17 and 18 August 1943 RAF Bomber Command’s Operation Hydra dispatched raids on the Peenemünde camp consisting of 596 aircraft and dropping 1,800 tons of explosives.[20] The facility was salvaged and most of the science team remained unharmed, however the raids killed von Braun’s engine designer Walter Thiel and Chief Engineer Walther, and the rocket program was delayed.[21][22]

The first combat A-4, renamed the V-2 (Vergeltungswaffe 2 “Retaliation/Vengeance Weapon 2″) for propaganda purposes, was launched toward England on September 7, 1944, only 21 months after the project had been officially commissioned. Von Braun’s interest in rockets was specifically for the application of space travel, which led him to say on hearing the news from London: “The rocket worked perfectly except for landing on the wrong planet.” He described it as his “darkest day”.[citation needed]
[edit] Experiments with rocket aircraft
A regular He 112

During 1936 von Braun’s rocketry team working at Kummersdorf investigated installing liquid-fuelled rockets in aircraft. Ernst Heinkel enthusiastically supported their efforts, supplying a He 72 and later two He 112s for the experiments. Late in 1936 Erich Warsitz was seconded by the RLM to Wernher von Braun and Ernst Heinkel, because he had been recognized as one of the most experienced test-pilots of the time, and because he also had an extraordinary fund of technical knowledge.[23] After von Braun familiarized Warsitz with a test-stand run, showing him the corresponding apparatus in the aircraft, he asked:

“Are you with us and will you test the rocket in the air? Then, Warsitz, you will be a famous man. And later we will fly to the moon – with you at the helm!”[24]

In June 1937, at Neuhardenberg (a large field about 70 kilometres east of Berlin, listed as a reserve airfield in the event of war), one of these latter aircraft was flown with its piston engine shut down during flight by test pilot Erich Warsitz, at which time it was propelled by von Braun’s rocket power alone. Despite the wheels-up landing and having the fuselage on fire, it proved to official circles that an aircraft could be flown satisfactorily with a back-thrust system through the rear.[25]

At the same time, Hellmuth Walter’s experiments into Hydrogen peroxide-based rockets were leading towards light and simple rockets that appeared well-suited for aircraft installation. Also the firm of Hellmuth Walter at Kiel had been commissioned by the RLM to build a rocket engine for the He 112, so there were two different new rocket motor designs at Neuhardenberg: whereas the von Braun’s engines were powered by alcohol and liquid oxygen, Walter engines had hydrogen peroxide and calcium permanganate as a catalyst. Von Braun’s engine used direct combustion and created fire, the Walter devices hot vapours from a chemical reaction, but both created thrust and provided high speed.[26] The subsequent flights with the He 112 used the Walter-rocket instead of von Braun’s; it was more reliable, simpler to operate and the dangers to test-pilot Erich Warsitz and machine were less.[27]
[edit] Slave labor

SS General Hans Kammler, who as an engineer had constructed several concentration camps including Auschwitz, had a reputation for brutality and had originated the idea of using concentration camp prisoners as slave laborers in the rocket program. Arthur Rudolph, chief engineer of the V-2 rocket factory at Peenemünde, endorsed this idea in April 1943 when a labor shortage developed. More people died building the V-2 rockets than were killed by it as a weapon.[28] Von Braun admitted visiting the plant at Mittelwerk on many occasions, and called conditions at the plant “repulsive”, but claimed never to have witnessed any deaths or beatings, although it had become clear to him by 1944 that deaths had occurred.[29] He denied ever having visited the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp itself, where 20,000 died from illness, beatings, hangings and intolerable working conditions.[30]

On August 15, 1944, von Braun wrote a letter to Albin Sawatzki, manager of the V-2 production, admitting that he personally picked labor slaves from the Buchenwald concentration camp, who, he admitted 25 years later in an interview, had been in a “pitiful shape”.[3]

In Wernher von Braun: Crusader for Space, numerous statements by von Braun show he was aware of the conditions but felt completely unable to change them. A friend quotes von Braun speaking of a visit to Mittelwerk:

It is hellish. My spontaneous reaction was to talk to one of the SS guards, only to be told with unmistakable harshness that I should mind my own business, or find myself in the same striped fatigues!… I realized that any attempt of reasoning on humane grounds would be utterly futile. (Page 44)

When asked if von Braun could have protested against the brutal treatment of the slave laborers, von Braun team member Konrad Dannenberg told The Huntsville Times, “If he had done it, in my opinion, he would have been shot on the spot.”[31]

Others claim von Braun engaged in brutal treatment or approved of it. Guy Morand, a French resistance fighter who was a prisoner in Dora, testified in 1995 that after an apparent sabotage attempt:

Without even listening to my explanations, [von Braun] ordered the Meister to have me given 25 strokes…Then, judging that the strokes weren’t sufficiently hard, he ordered I be flogged more vigorously…von Braun made me translate that I deserved much more, that in fact I deserved to be hanged…I would say his cruelty, of which I was personally a victim, are, I would say, an eloquent testimony to his Nazi fanaticism.[32]

Robert Cazabonne, another French prisoner, testified that von Braun stood by and watched as prisoners were hung by chains from hoists.[33] Von Braun claimed he “never saw any kind of abuse or killing” and only “heard rumors…that some prisoners had been hung in the underground galleries”.[34]
[edit] Arrest and release by the Nazi regime

According to André Sellier, a French historian and survivor of the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp, Himmler had von Braun come to his Hochwald HQ in East Prussia in February 1944. To increase his power-base within the Nazi régime, Heinrich Himmler was conspiring to use Kammler to wrest control of all German armament programs, including the V-2 program at Peenemünde.[35] He therefore recommended that von Braun work more closely with Kammler to solve the problems of the V-2, but von Braun claimed to have replied that the problems were merely technical and he was confident that they would be solved with Dornberger’s assistance.

Apparently von Braun had been under SD surveillance since October 1943. A report stated that he and his colleagues Riedel and Gröttrup were said to have expressed regret at an engineer’s house one evening that they were not working on a spaceship and that they felt the war was not going well; this was considered a “defeatist” attitude. A young female dentist who was an SS spy reported their comments.[35] Combined with Himmler’s false charges that von Braun was a communist sympathizer and had attempted to sabotage the V-2 program, and considering that von Braun was a qualified pilot who regularly piloted his government-provided airplane that might allow him to escape to England, this led to his arrest by the Gestapo.[35]

The unsuspecting von Braun was detained on March 14 (or March 15),[36] 1944 and was taken to a Gestapo cell in Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland),[35] where he was imprisoned for two weeks without even knowing the charges against him. It was only through the Abwehr in Berlin that Dornberger was able to obtain von Braun’s conditional release and Albert Speer, Reichsminister for Munitions and War Production, convinced Hitler to reinstate von Braun so that the V-2 program could continue.[35] Citing from the “Führerprotokoll” (the minutes of Hitler’s meetings) dated May 13, 1944 in his memoirs, Speer later relayed what Hitler had finally conceded: “In the matter concerning B. I will guarantee you that he will be exempt from persecution as long as he is indispensable for you, in spite of the difficult general consequences this will have.”
[edit] Surrender to the Americans
Von Braun (with armcast) immediately after his surrender

The Soviet Army was about 160 km from Peenemünde in the spring of 1945 when von Braun assembled his planning staff and asked them to decide how and to whom they should surrender. Afraid of Soviet cruelty to prisoners of war, von Braun and his staff decided to try to surrender to the Americans. Kammler had ordered relocation of von Braun’s team into central Germany; however, a conflicting order from an army chief ordered them to join the army and fight. Deciding that Kammler’s order was their best bet to defect to the Americans, von Braun fabricated documents and transported 500 of his affiliates to the area around Mittelwerk, where they resumed their work. For fear of their documents being destroyed by the SS, von Braun ordered the blueprints to be hidden in an abandoned mine shaft in the Harz mountain range.[37]

While on an official trip in March, von Braun suffered a complicated fracture of his left arm and shoulder after his driver fell asleep at the wheel. His injuries were serious, but he insisted that his arm be set in a cast so he could leave the hospital. Due to this neglect of the injury he had to be hospitalized again a month later where his bones had to be re-broken and re-aligned.[37]

In April, as the allied forces advanced deeper into Germany, Kammler ordered the science team to be moved by train into the town of Oberammergau in the Bavarian Alps where they were closely guarded by the SS with orders to execute the team if they were about to fall into enemy hands. However, von Braun managed to convince SS Major Kummer to order the dispersion of the group into nearby villages so that they would not be an easy target for U.S. bombers.[37]

On May 2, 1945, upon finding an American private from the U.S. 44th Infantry Division, von Braun’s brother and fellow rocket engineer, Magnus, approached the soldier on a bicycle, calling out in broken English: “My name is Magnus von Braun. My brother invented the V-2. We want to surrender.”[5][38] After the surrender, von Braun spoke to the press:

“We knew that we had created a new means of warfare, and the question as to what nation, to what victorious nation we were willing to entrust this brainchild of ours was a moral decision more than anything else. We wanted to see the world spared another conflict such as Germany had just been through, and we felt that only by surrendering such a weapon to people who are guided by the Bible could such an assurance to the world be best secured.”[39]

The American high command was well aware of how important their catch was: von Braun had been at the top of the Black List, the code name for the list of German scientists and engineers targeted for immediate interrogation by U.S. military experts. On June 19, 1945, two days before the scheduled handover of the area to the Soviets, US Army Major Robert B. Staver, Chief of the Jet Propulsion Section of the Research and Intelligence Branch of the US Army Ordnance in London, and Lt Col R. L. Williams took von Braun and his department chiefs by jeep from Garmisch to Munich. The group was flown to Nordhausen, and was evacuated 40 miles (64 km) southwest to Witzenhausen, a small town in the American Zone, the next day.[40] Von Braun was subsequently recruited to the U.S. under Operation Overcast.
[edit] American career
[edit] U.S. Army career

On June 20, 1945, U.S. Secretary of State Cordell Hull approved the transfer of von Braun and his specialists to America; however this was not announced to the public until October 1, 1945.[41] Since the paperwork of those Germans selected for transfer to the United States was indicated by paperclips, the transfer of von Braun and his colleagues became known as Operation Paperclip, an operation that resulted in the employment of many German scientists by the U.S. Army.[42]

The first seven technicians arrived in the United States at New Castle Army Air Field, just south of Wilmington, Delaware, on September 20, 1945. They were then flown to Boston and taken by boat to the Army Intelligence Service post at Fort Strong in Boston Harbor. Later, with the exception of von Braun, the men were transferred to Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland to sort out the Peenemünde documents, enabling the scientists to continue their rocketry experiments.

Finally, von Braun and his remaining Peenemünde staff (see List of German rocket scientists in the United States) were transferred to their new home at Fort Bliss, Texas, a large Army installation just north of El Paso. While there, they trained military, industrial and university personnel in the intricacies of rockets and guided missiles. As part of the Hermes project they helped to refurbish, assemble and launch a number of V-2s that had been shipped from Germany to the White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico. They also continued to study the future potential of rockets for military and research applications. Since they were not permitted to leave Fort Bliss without military escort, von Braun and his colleagues began to refer to themselves only half-jokingly as “PoPs,” “Prisoners of Peace.”
Maria von Braun, wife of Wernher von Braun

During his stay at Fort Bliss, von Braun mailed a marriage proposal to 18-year-old Maria Luise von Quistorp, his cousin on his mother’s side. On March 1, 1947, having received permission to go back to Germany and return with his bride, he married her in a Lutheran church in Landshut, Germany. He and his bride and his father and mother returned to New York on March 26, 1947. On 9 December 1948, the von Brauns’ first daughter, Iris Careen, was born at Fort Bliss Army Hospital. The von Brauns eventually had two more children, Margrit Cécile on May 8, 1952 and Peter Constantine on June 2, 1960. On April 15, 1955, von Braun became a naturalized citizen of the United States.

In 1950, at the start of the Korean War, von Braun and his team were transferred to Huntsville, Alabama, his home for the next twenty years. Between 1950 and 1956, von Braun led the Army’s rocket development team at Redstone Arsenal, resulting in the Redstone rocket, which was used for the first live nuclear ballistic missile tests conducted by the United States.

As director of the Development Operations Division of the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA), von Braun, with his team, then developed the Jupiter-C, a modified Redstone rocket.[43] The Jupiter-C successfully launched the West’s first satellite, Explorer 1, on January 31, 1958. This event signaled the birth of America’s space program.

Despite the work on the Redstone rocket, the twelve years from 1945 to 1957 were probably some of the most frustrating for von Braun and his colleagues. In the Soviet Union, Sergei Korolev and his team of scientists and engineers plowed ahead with several new rocket designs and the Sputnik program, while the American government was not very interested in von Braun’s work or views and only embarked on a very modest rocket-building program. In the meantime, the press tended to dwell on von Braun’s past as a member of the SS and the slave labor used to build his V-2 rockets.
[edit] Popular concepts for a human presence in space

Repeating the pattern he had established during his earlier career in Germany, von Braun – while directing military rocket development in the real world – continued to entertain his engineer-scientist’s dream of a future world in which rockets would be used for space exploration. However, instead of risking being sacked, he now was increasingly in a position to popularize these ideas. The May 14, 1950 headline of The Huntsville Times (“Dr. von Braun Says Rocket Flights Possible to Moon”) might have marked the beginning of these efforts. These disclosures rode a moonflight publicity wave that was created by the two 1950 U.S. science fiction films, Destination Moon and Rocketship X-M.

In 1952, von Braun first published his concept of a manned space station in a Collier’s Weekly magazine series of articles entitled Man Will Conquer Space Soon! These articles were illustrated by the space artist Chesley Bonestell and were influential in spreading his ideas. Frequently von Braun worked with fellow German-born space advocate and science writer Willy Ley to publish his concepts which, unsurprisingly, were heavy on the engineering side and anticipated many technical aspects of space flight that later became reality.

The space station (to be constructed using rockets with recoverable and reusable ascent stages) would be a toroid structure, with a diameter of 250 feet (76 m), would spin around a central docking nave to provide artificial gravity, and would be assembled in a 1,075 mile (1,730 km) two-hour, high-inclination Earth orbit allowing observation of essentially every point on earth on at least a daily basis. (More than a decade later, the movie version of 2001: A Space Odyssey would draw heavily on this design concept in its visualization of the orbital space station.) The ultimate purpose of the space station would be to provide an assembly platform for manned lunar expeditions.

Von Braun envisaged these expeditions as very large-scale undertakings, with a total of 50 astronauts travelling in three huge spacecraft (two for crew, one primarily for cargo), each 49 m long and 33 m in diameter and driven by a rectangular array of 30 jet propulsion engines.[44] Upon arrival, astronauts would establish a permanent lunar base in the Sinus Roris region by using the emptied cargo holds of their craft as shelters, and would explore their surroundings for eight weeks. This would include a 400 km expedition in pressurized rovers to the crater Harpalus and the Mare Imbrium foothills.
Walt Disney and Wernher von Braun, shown in this 1954 photo holding a model of his passenger ship, collaborated on a series of three educational films.

At this time von Braun also worked out preliminary concepts for a manned Mars mission which used the space station as a staging point. His initial plans, published in The Mars Project (1952), had envisaged a fleet of ten spacecraft (each with a mass of 3,720 metric tons), three of them unmanned and each carrying one 200-ton winged lander[45] in addition to cargo, and nine crew vehicles transporting a total of 70 astronauts. Gigantic as this mission plan was, its engineering and astronautical parameters were thoroughly calculated. A later project was much more modest, using only one purely orbital cargo ship and one crewed craft. In each case, the expedition would use minimum-energy Hohmann transfer orbits for its trips to Mars and back to Earth.

Before technically formalizing his thoughts on human spaceflight to Mars, von Braun had written a science fiction novel, set in 1980, on the subject. According to his biographer, Erik Bergaust, the manuscript was rejected by no less than 18 publishers. Von Braun later published small portions of this opus in magazines, to illustrate selected aspects of his Mars project popularizations. The complete manuscript, titled Project MARS: A Technical Tale, did not appear as a printed book until December 2006.[46]

In the hope that its involvement would bring about greater public interest in the future of the space program, von Braun also began working with Walt Disney and the Disney studios as a technical director, initially for three television films about space exploration. The initial broadcast devoted to space exploration was Man in Space, which first went on air on March 9, 1955.

Later (in 1959) von Braun published a short booklet[47] — condensed from episodes that had appeared in This Week Magazine before—describing his updated concept of the first manned lunar landing. The scenario included only a single and relatively small spacecraft—a winged lander with a crew of only two experienced pilots who had already circumnavigated the moon on an earlier mission. The brute-force direct ascent flight schedule used a rocket design with five sequential stages, loosely based on the Nova designs that were under discussion at this time. After a night launch from a Pacific island the first three stages would bring the spacecraft (with the two remaining upper stages attached) to terrestrial escape velocity, with each burn creating an acceleration of 8-9 times standard gravity. Residual propellant in the third stage would be used for the deceleration intended to commence only a few hundred kilometers above the landing site in a crater near the lunar north pole. The fourth stage provided acceleration to lunar escape velocity while the fifth stage would be responsible for a deceleration during return to the Earth to a residual speed that allows aerocapture of the spacecraft ending in a runway landing, much in the way of the Space Shuttle. One remarkable feature of this technical tale is that the engineer Wernher von Braun anticipated a medical phenomenon that would become apparent only years later: being a veteran astronaut with no history of serious adverse reactions to weightlessness offers no protection against becoming unexpectedly and violently spacesick.
[edit] Concepts for orbital warfare

Von Braun developed and published his space station concept during the very “coldest” time of the Cold War, when the U.S. government for which he worked put the containment of the Soviet Union above everything else. The fact that his space station – if armed with missiles that could be easily adapted from those already available at this time – would give the United States space superiority in both orbital and orbit-to-ground warfare did not escape him. Although von Braun took care to qualify such military applications as “particularly dreadful” in his popular writings, he elaborated on them in several of his books and articles. This much less peaceful aspect of von Braun’s “drive for space” has recently been reviewed by Michael J. Neufeld from the Space History Division of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington.[48]
Still with his rocket models, von Braun is pictured in his new office at NASA headquarters in 1970

The U.S. Navy had been tasked with building a rocket to lift satellites into orbit, but the resulting Vanguard rocket launch system was unreliable. In 1957, with the launch of Sputnik 1, there was a growing perception within the United States that America lagged behind the Soviet Union in the emerging Space Race. American authorities then chose to utilize von Braun and his German team’s experience with missiles to create an orbital launch vehicle.

NASA was established by law on July 29, 1958. One day later, the 50th Redstone rocket was successfully launched from Johnston Atoll in the south Pacific as part of Operation Hardtack. Two years later, NASA opened the new Marshall Space Flight Center at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, and the ABMA development team led by von Braun was transferred to NASA. In a face-to-face meeting with Herb York at the Pentagon, von Braun made it clear he would go to NASA only if development of the Saturn was allowed to continue.[49] Presiding from July 1960 to February 1970, von Braun became the center’s first Director.

The Marshall Center’s first major program was the development of Saturn rockets to carry heavy payloads into and beyond Earth orbit. From this, the Apollo program for manned moon flights was developed. Wernher von Braun initially pushed for a flight engineering concept that called for an Earth orbit rendezvous technique (the approach he had argued for building his space station), but in 1962 he converted to the more risky lunar orbit rendezvous concept that was subsequently realized.[50] His dream to help mankind set foot on the Moon became a reality on July 16, 1969 when a Marshall-developed Saturn V rocket launched the crew of Apollo 11 on its historic eight-day mission. Over the course of the program, Saturn V rockets enabled six teams of astronauts to reach the surface of the Moon.

During the late 1960s, von Braun played an instrumental role in the development of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville. The desk from which he guided America’s entry in the Space Race remains on display there.

During the local summer of 1966/67, von Braun participated in a field trip to Antarctica, organized for him and several other members of top NASA management.[51] The goal of the field trip was to determine whether the experience gained by US scientific and technological community during the exploration of Antarctic wastelands would be useful for the manned exploration of space. Von Braun was mainly interested in management of the scientific effort on Antarctic research stations, logistics, habitation and life support, and in using the barren Antarctic terrain like the glacial dry valleys to test the equipment that one day would be used to look for signs of life on Mars and other worlds.

In an internal memo dated January 16, 1969,[52] von Braun had confirmed to his staff that he would stay on as a Center Director at Huntsville to head the Apollo Applications Program. A few months later, on occasion of the first moon-landing, he publicly expressed his optimism that the Saturn V carrier system would continue to be developed, advocating manned missions to Mars in the 1980s.[53]

However, on March 1, 1970, von Braun and his family relocated to Washington, D.C., when he was assigned the post of NASA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for Planning at NASA Headquarters. After a series of conflicts associated with the truncation of the Apollo program, and facing severe budget constraints, von Braun retired from NASA on May 26, 1972. Not only had it become evident by this time that his and NASA’s visions for future U.S. space flight projects were incompatible; it was perhaps even more frustrating for him to see popular support for a continued presence of man in space wane dramatically once the goal to reach the moon had been accomplished.
[edit] Career after NASA
Wernher von Braun and William R. Lucas, the first and third Marshall Space Flight Center directors, viewing a Space Shuttle model, October 11, 1974

After leaving NASA, von Braun became Vice President for Engineering and Development at the aerospace company, Fairchild Industries in Germantown, Maryland on July 1, 1972.

In 1973 a routine health check uncovered kidney cancer which during the following years could not be controlled by surgery.[54] Von Braun continued his work to the extent possible, which included accepting invitations to speak at colleges and universities as he was eager to cultivate interest in human spaceflight and rocketry, particularly with students and a new generation of engineers. On one such visit in the spring of 1974 to Allegheny College, von Braun revealed a more personal, down-to-earth side of himself as a man in his early 60s, beyond the public persona most saw, including an all-too-human allergy to feather pillows and a subtle, if not humorous disdain for some rock music of the era.

Von Braun helped establish and promote the National Space Institute, a precursor of the present-day National Space Society, in 1975, and became its first president and chairman. In 1976, he became scientific consultant to Lutz Kayser, the CEO of OTRAG, and a member of the Daimler-Benz board of directors. However, his deteriorating condition forced him to retire from Fairchild on December 31, 1976. When the 1975 National Medal of Science was awarded to him in early 1977 he was hospitalized, and unable to attend the White House ceremony.

[edit] Quotations

Upon surrendering with his rocket team to the Americans in 1945: “We knew that we had created a new means of warfare, and the question as to what nation, to what victorious nation we were willing to entrust this brainchild of ours was a moral decision more than anything else. We wanted to see the world spared another conflict such as Germany had just been through, and we felt that only by surrendering such a weapon to people who are guided by the Bible could such an assurance to the world be best secured.”[61]

“All of man’s scientific and engineering efforts will be in vain unless they are performed and utilized within a framework of ethical standards commensurate with the magnitude of the scope of the technological revolution. The more technology advances, the more fateful will be its impact on humanity.”

“You must accept one of two basic premises: Either we are alone in the universe, or we are not alone in the universe. And either way, the implications are staggering”.

“If the world’s ethical standards fail to rise with the advances of our technological revolution, the world will go to hell. Let us remember that in the horse-and-buggy days nobody got hurt if the coachman had a drink too many. In our times of high-powered automobiles, however, that same drink may be fatal….”[62]

On Adolf Hitler: “I began to see the shape of the man – his brilliance, the tremendous force of personality. It gripped you somehow. But also you could see his flaw — he was wholly without scruples, a godless man who thought himself the only god, the only authority he needed.”[63]
[edit] Honors
In February 1970, Huntsville, Alabama, honored Wernher von Braun’s years of service with a series of events including a plaque in his honor. Pictured (left to right), his daughter Iris, wife Maria, U.S. Senator John Sparkman, Alabama Governor Albert Brewer, von Braun, son Peter, and daughter Margrit.

[edit] Recognition and critique

    * Apollo space program director Sam Phillips was quoted as saying that he did not think that America would have reached the moon as quickly as it did without von Braun’s help. Later, after discussing it with colleagues, he amended this to say that he did not believe America would have reached the moon at all.[citation needed]
* The crater von Braun on the Moon is named after him.
* Von Braun received a total of 12 honorary doctorates, among them (on January 8, 1963) one from the Technical University of Berlin from which he had graduated.
* Von Braun was responsible for the creation of the Research Institute at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. As a result of his vision, the university is one of the leading universities in the nation for NASA-sponsored research. The building housing the university’s Research Institute was named in his honor, Von Braun Research Hall, in 2000.
* Several German cities (Bonn, Neu-Isenburg, Mannheim, Mainz), and dozens of smaller towns have named streets after Wernher von Braun.
* The Von Braun Center (built 1975) in Huntsville, Alabama is named in von Braun’s honor.
* Scrutiny of von Braun’s use of forced labor at the Mittelwerk intensified again in 1984 when Arthur Rudolph, one of his top affiliates from the A-4/V2 through to the Apollo projects, left the United States and was forced to renounce his citizenship in place of the alternative of being tried for war crimes.[67]
* A science- and engineering-oriented Gymnasium in Friedberg, Bavaria was named after Wernher von Braun in 1979. In response to rising criticism, a school committee decided in 1995, after lengthy deliberations, to keep the name but “to address von Braun’s ambiguity in the advanced history classes.”
* An avenue in the Annadale section of Staten Island, NY was named for him in 1977.

[edit] Cultural references
[edit] On film and television

Wernher von Braun has been featured in a number of movies and television shows or series about the Space Race:

    * I Aim at the Stars (1960), also titled Wernher von Braun and Ich greife nach den Sternen (“I Reach for the Stars”): von Braun played by Curd Jürgens). Satirist Mort Sahl suggested the subtitle “(But Sometimes I Hit London)”.
* From the Earth to the Moon (TV, 1998): von Braun played by Norbert Weisser.
* October Sky (1999): In this film about American rocket scientist Homer Hickam, who as a teenager admired von Braun, the scientist is played by Joe Digaetano.
* Space Race (TV, BBC co-production with NDR (Germany), Channel One TV (Russia) and National Geographic TV (USA), 2005): von Braun played by Richard Dillane.
Original German versionWernher von Braun – Der Mann für die Wunderwaffen by the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk.

Several fictional characters have been modeled on von Braun:

    * The Right Stuff (1983): The Chief Scientist, played by Scott Beach, was clearly modeled on von Braun.
* Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964): Dr Strangelove is usually held to be based at least partly on von Braun.[68]
* Alphaville, une étrange aventure de Lemmy Caution (1965, directed by Jean-Luc Godard): Howard Vernon plays Professor Von Braun (also known as Leonard Nosferatu), the inventor of the “Alpha 60″ super-computer which rules Alphaville.

There are other references to von Braun in fiction as well:

    * Mobile Suit Gundam (1979): The largest Lunar city in the Universal Century era is called ‘Von Braun City’. The city is the home of Anaheim Electronics, is a strategic point in space, and is built around Neil Armstrong’s footprint in the Apollo missions.
* Mababangong Bangungot (Perfumed Nightmare) (1977): Director and star Kidlat Tahimik is president of a Wernher von Braun club and is fascinated with “First World” progress, particularly von Braun’s efforts in the U.S. space program.
* Planetes (TV, 2004): There is an upcoming exploratory mission to Jupiter on a new fusion powered ship, the Von Braun.
* Alien Planet (TV, 2005): A spacecraft, named Von Braun, is named after him.
* In Back to the Future Part III, character “Doc” Emmett Brown reveals a possible relation to von Braun by saying that his paternal side of the family arrived in Hill Valey, California in 1908 – “when they were still called von Braun!”

[edit] In print media

    * In an issue of Mad Magazine in the late 1950s, artist Wallace Wood depicted von Braun at the launch of a rocket, ready to listen to a radio transmitting the rocket’s signals. Suddenly he says, “HIMMEL! Vas ist los?” and then explains, “Vat iss wrong is vit der RADIO! It iss AC…und der control room iss DC!”
* In Warren Ellis’ graphic novel Ministry of Space, Von Braun is a supporting character, settling in Britain after World War II, and being essential for the realization of the British Space Program.

[edit] In novels

    * The Good German by Joseph Kanon. Von Braun and other scientists are said to have been implicated in the use of slave labour at Peenemünde; their transfer to the US forms part of the narrative.
* Space by James Michener. Von Braun and other German scientists are brought to the US and form a vital part of the US efforts to reach space.
* Gravity’s Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. The plot involves British intelligence attempting to avert and predict V-2 rocket attacks. The work even includes a gyroscopic equation for the V2. The first portion of the novel, “Beyond The Zero”, begins with a quote from Von Braun: “Nature does not know extinction; all it knows is transformation. Everything science has taught me, and continues to teach me, strengthens my belief in the continuity of our spiritual existence after death.”
* New Dictionary, a short story by Kurt Vonnegut in his collection Welcome to the Monkey House notes Von Braun as one of the things an old dictionary doesn’t mention.
* Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut has a scene in which a character reads a Life magazine with Von Braun on the cover.
* DORA by Jean Michel. This is not a novel but a memoir.
* Rocket Boys by Homer H. Hickam, Jr. The movie “October Sky” was based on this memoir about a boy, Sonny (in the movie, he’s called Homer) Hickam, who lives in a small West Virginia coal town and builds rockets and greatly admires von Braun. Although not about von Braun it is a vivid picture of popular attitudes toward rocket science and von Braun during the early days of the U. S. space program.

[edit] In music

    * Wernher von Braun (1965):[69] A song written and performed by Tom Lehrer for an episode of NBC’s American version of the BBC TV show That Was The Week That Was; the song was later included in Lehrer’s album That Was The Year That Was. It was a satire on what some saw as von Braun’s cavalier attitude toward the consequences of his work in Nazi Germany: “‘Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down? / That’s not my department’, says Wernher von Braun.” Contrary to popular belief, Wernher von Braun did not sue Tom Lehrer for defamation, nor has Lehrer been forced to relinquish all of his royalty income to Von Braun. Lehrer firmly denied these claims in a 2003 interview.[70]
* The Last Days of Pompeii (1991): A rock opera by Grant Hart’s post-Hüsker Dü alternative rock group Nova Mob, in which von Braun features as a character. The album includes a song called Wernher von Braun.
* Progress vs. Pettiness (2005): A song about the Space Race written and performed by The Phenomenauts for their CD Re-Entry. The song begins: “In 1942 there was Wernher von Braun…”
* John D. Loudermilk’s song He’s Just A Scientist (That’s All) contains the lyric “Everybody’s flippin’ over Fabian or Frankie Avalon, but nobody ever seems to give a flip over Dr Werner Von Braun.”
* The song “Apollo XI/V1/V2/Aggregat 4″ from German Electro band Welle:Erdball deals with his inventions.

Retrieved 2007-06-21. “Even as man prepared to take his first tentative extraterrestrial steps, other celestial adventures beckoned him. The shape and scope of the post-Apollo manned space program remained hazy, and a great deal depends on the safe and successful outcome of Apollo 11. But well before the moon flight was launched, NASA was casting eyes on targets far beyond the moon. The most inviting: the earth’s close, and probably most hospitable, planetary neighbor. Given the same energy and dedication that took them to the moon, says Wernher von Braun, Americans could land on Mars as early as 1982.”
54. ^ German sources mostly specify the cancer as renal, while American biographies unanimously just mention cancer. The time when von Braun learned about the disease is generally given as between 1973 and 1976. The characteristics of renal cell carcinoma, which has a bad prognosis even today, do not rule out either time limit.

Today the Obama Administration makes it official. Our democracy is an endangered form of governa

Today the Obama Administration makes it official. Our democracy is an endangered form of governance.

Today the Environmental Protection Agency officially declares greenhouse gas emissions to be hazardous to our health. The announcement is not exactly a disputed revelation. What is disputed is the degree to which greenhouse gasses may be unhealthy to us and our environment.

Recent disclosures have shown that political lobbyists have influenced the slanting of scientific studies in an attempt to turn hypothetical extremes of global warming into mass hysteria. The attempts to exaggerate scientific results has set both science and the “sky is falling” radical left, back by leaps and bounds and most importantly blemished the reputation of the scientific community. It has also made many skeptical of the real reason behind the radical agenda for such things as a cap-and-trade bill that would amount to a tax on the air that we breathe and the greatest transfer of wealth in the history of mankind. Many skeptics see the whole exaggeration and attempts at generating hysteria over manmade global warming effects, as simply a way of gaining more control over our finances and lives.

At the same time, skeptics are not rushing out to pump greenhouse gas emissions into their homes. They realize that sound environmental policies, which lead to logical scientific advances and practical applications, are desired. But they must be rational ones that do not abuse science and are not used as excuses for controlling us and taking rights away from us.

For those of us who understand this, the announcement by the EPA concerning greenhouse gas emissions is not a sincere attempt at sound environmental policy. It is a power grab that will take our rights and finances away. By officially declaring GHG emissions dangerous to our health and using the endangered species act to combat it, is a technical measure that triggers the EPA’s ability to act without congressional approval. That means that the Environmental Protection Agency will now be able to freely enact policies and taxes as they wish.

This paves the way for the EPA to go ahead with suggestions they made early this year which would charge farmers fees for each head of cattle or pigs on their farm all because their such farm animal seemingly produce gassy emissions (farts) that are said to produce lethal lethal doses of CO2 which trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere.

But the free reign of the EPA does not stop there. The technical declaration that they establish will enable them to dictate and mandate costly regulations and procedures that can amount to taxes and fees that will help to put businesses and industries out of business and force families into situations where they can be forced out of their homes or taxed into poverty.

It has been almost six months since the House approved the cap-and-trade initiative, by a paper thin margin. The Administration and EPA bureaucrats were quite pleased with this. However the Senate has failed to take up the measure and it looks like they may not do so anytime soon. Which is why the impatient EPA cleared the way to do as they please without any congressional action.

Just as is the case with President Obama’s great appreciation for creating czars, who are unelected officials that remain unaccountable for the federal policies they set, the President has now made it possible for an entire federal agency to do the same.

The Administrations decision to move ahead with the use of the endangerment act in regards to curbing CO2 emikssions in order to allow the EPA to independently set and enforce regulations, is seen as a sign as President Obama’s willingness to reach international environmental agreements without congressional consent. This decision to launch a new EPA dictatorship and the signal it sends, coincidentally comes just as 1,200 limos and 140 private jets gather in Copenhagen to discuss the environment while leaving a larger carbon footprint and release more GHG than most Americans families do in an entire year. Ironically, these fuel consuming environmental hypocrites believe they can save the world by urging the United States to sign on to radical environmental standards that we are not yet prepared to meet without crippling the American economy. In the meantime, nations like India and China, the world’s most egregious polluters, continue to forge ahead unabated and unaffected by environmental regulations. This allows them to continue growing their economies as they produce goods at a far lower rate than the United States which continues to see its economy shrink.

Perhaps the most important message that the Obama Administration and the one world union leaders in Copenhagen are really sending us today is that global warming is probably the least of our worries. They are proving that our we should actually fear government the most.

Democrat Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus admitted to sending a nomination for his girlfriend and former staffer, Melodee Hanes to President Obama for the job of US Attorney for Montana. The admission came only after a news outlet that that covers events involving the US Department of Justice, discovered the relationship between Baucus, Hanes, and her nomination. Were it not for the discovery by a third party, Senator Baucus would not have admitted to anything. Hanes was not ultimately selected for the job by President Obama and since Hanes did not get the position, it is not an issue. However, what is at issue is the integrity of another powerful Democrat. Any politician who is sincere and above reproach, would recuse themselves from making such a nomination, with the understanding that even if their girlfriend was the most qualified person for the job, the romantic involvement would not, given the circumstances, provide the greatest sense of confidence in the nomination. Patronage is nothing new and this incident is not necessarily a scandal, especially compared with the improprieties of other Democrat leaders like Charlie Rangel, but it does show that Max Baucus is just as much a part of the problem in Washington as the rest of them.

Mike Huckabee

In a story that ended this past week and began the week before that, the former Republican Governor from Arkansas and GOP presidential hopeful who turned into a Fox News Channel T.V. show host, lost any chance of aspiring to the presidency of the United States anytime soon. As governor Huckabee pardoned and commuted the sentences of more criminals than all of his three predecessors put together, a few of those whose sentences were expedited by him were found to have committed violent rapes after being freed early. The issue was a mark against him in his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. But now another criminal offered leniency by Huck, killed 4 police officers in Washington state after his early release from prison. No matter what, Mike Huckabee bears a burden of responsibility for the process that made this possible and no matter what reasoning or excuses that may be made, the early releases of prisoners by Huckabee have expedited the deaths of a combined total of at least five, if not more people, as well as several rapes. Huckabee’s leadership failed those people and their families and failed to protect all of us. At the very least, Huckabee should suffer a dashing of any hope of becoming President of the United States and to call him a loser of the week is an understatement.

The Economy

Nationally, Democrats are boasting the virtues of the fact that we only lost 110,000 jobs in October. The fact that October typically brings large numbers of seasonal holiday hiring’s and that we still lost more than a hundred thousand jobs does not seem to matter to Democrats. They ignore the fact that jobs are still being lost and that the imploding economy held down seasonal hiring. They also ignore the continued hemorrhaging of jobs in areas associated with a sustainable rebound in activity, including trade, transportation, utilities, construction and manufacturing. And while the Administration celebrates there only being 110,000 jobs lost, they fail to embark upon any policies that will truly increase any longterm job growth and establish sustainable economic growth. Instead they promote government spending which produces no return on the dollar and no long term promise. Adding to the liberal celebration over things “not being worse” is the Administration’s proven doctoring of the books, ala Recovery.org which recorded jobs in places that don’t exist, and you have liberal slights of hand that do not include 100,000 jobs deleted from the rolls of those looking for a work because they gave up. In the end what you have is no reason to party or to be optimistic about current economic policies. No matter what, despite White House spawned celebrations that areextolled by a media hypnotized by the President, the economy was a loser this week and if things keep going this way, it will be losing for a long time to come.

General Stanley McChrystal

After a long awaited decision, President Obama has agreed to send the man on the ground and in charge of the war effort in Afghanistan, the forces that he requested to get the job done. McChrystal was smart though. He didn’t just request the troops. Several weeks ago, frustrated by no signs of the President’s commitment to the cause, McChrystal allowed his position on more troops to “leak” out. Word quickly spread that the man who knew what he was doing and what needed to be done in Afghanistan was ready to resign if he didn’t get what he wanted. Such “leaks” do not happen by chance in the covert world of military planning and operations…………..at least not unless of course they are intentionally orchestrated. The events helped put the issue of Afghanistan on the front burner and consequently put in motion the chain of events that spurred the President into action. Shortly after the “leak”, the President met with McChrystal and all of sudden convened meetings with his war council, among the first of his administration. McChrystal did not get the full compliment of forces that he officially requested but something tells me that the good General is a good poker player and that heexaggerated his numbers intentionally so that he would wound up with what he really needed. On this one, it’s McChrystal one, politicians zero.

The Taliban

Although President Obama finally moved on his commitment to the war in Afghanistan, which he calls a war of necessity, he provided the main enemy, in the war there, with some crucial information. President Obama told the enemy when they can expect the pressure to be taken off of them by letting them know that the US will begin to pull out of Afghanistan in 18 months. That type of itinerary is not exactly the one that should be shared with those who we are trying to keep in the dark on things. Perhaps that type of public timeline is a good way for a “community organizer” to let his volunteers knows how long they have to get their message out but it is not the way a President should organize a war effort. Of course this timeline could always be moved up. Problem is, in 18 months, if President Obama back pedals on this one, his liberal base, which wants us out as soon as yesterday, will be quite angered an not at a very good time. That will be only 18 months before his reelection effort. Not a good time to have your base of support pissed at you. President Obama would have been best served, and would have best served us, by not letting the Taliban know how long they have to hold on and how long they need to stay hidden under their rocks and in their caves.

The former CEO of Hewlett Packard recently declared that she will be seeking the opportunity to run against California’s US Senator Barbara “Call Me Senator” Boxer and this past Saturday she made it clear that she is a force to be reckoned with. After winning her own battle against breast cancer, Republicans turned to Fiorina to give their response to the President’s weekly Saturday address. With the ongoing healthcare debate taking center stage, her response was one that resonated loudly, clearly and much more profoundly than anything President Obama has ever said on the issue. In her six and a half minute address, Fiorina highlighted a recent government medical panel’s conclusion to delay mammogram tests by a decade in an attempt to save costs. Quite eloquently and with a tone of calmness and dignity that Barbara Boxer could only find in others when it is pointed out to her, Fiorina explained how the same Preventive Services Task Force that recommended women put of testing, is the same task force that the current healthcare reform bill empowers to influence the coverage and preventive care that government run healthcare will allow for or provide. She also pointed out that the bill specifically authorizes (sec. 4105) that the Secretary of Health and Human Services deny payment for preventive services that this same Preventive Service Task Force recommends against. She adds, “do we really want government bureaucrats dictating how we prevent and treat something like breast cancer”? She also points out that “there is a reason why American women with breast cancer have a higher survival rate than women in countries with government run health care.” All in all, Carly Fiorina delivered one of the most powerful speeches against government run healthcare that this most recent debate has yet seen. (See the video below for yourself) And at the same time, she just gained herself the confidence of a lot of people who are looking for the right person to fire that silver bullet into the career of the nasty, flippant, onoxious, and arrogant, liberal queen of mean, Barbara Boxer.

“Tis best to try in vain, than not at all. Sincerely, faithfully to climb the heights. With vision taken bigger, broader flights. Even tho to untold depths your castles fall. And tho you find your rarest treasure spent. Your share is done to elevate: and that is better than contentment smug and flat. Altho your efforts unapplauded went.

And so if your own life a failure seems, the trail you broke alike, for foe and friend. Perhaps beyond conception of your dreams. As loyally you labored, to the end. True founder of a nobler life, is he who lifts and leads the world to victory.

All the days are gloomy, hail and raindrops fall. Sky and natures weeping, weeping for us all. All our joy, our gladness, all our longings hushed. All are hopes are blasted, all our spirits crushed. All the long tommrows frightful terrors cast. That they may in passing mirror but the past. Who? and why we sorrow, do you want to know? We are human cattle, driven as we go. Driven night and morning, young and weak and old. Driven without mercy, homeless, hungry, cold. And they will not hear us, will not heed our cry. Though we plead for justice, for our souls that die. Die from long starvation, from the endless strife. Longing for the sunshine, for a nobler life.

Yup. Zolitics. You read that right. Zolitics not politics.

It is a new network. The world’s first political entertainment network. For more details about it, check out this previous POLITICS 24/7 post about it. But to see the fist three episodes of Zolitics premier sit-com “Moving Numbers”, just scroll down and enjoy.

Moving Numbers is an original series that deals with a fictional U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania. Anyone who has ever been on the inside of campaign can, in one way or another, relate to the events depicted in the series. Those who haven’t been on the inside do get a glimpse at the less technical and often farcical side of campaigns.

Moving Numbers is not rocket science but it is also not meant to be, but for what its worth, it’s an amusing break from the often intensely contentious side of politics that we engage in or are witness to.

Personally, I like both the concept of Zolitics.com and their product and I wish them much success. Hopefully you too will find Zolitics and Moving Numbers an entertaining break from the usual.

Who knew that one of Ted Kennedy’s greatest legacies would have been his dying wish to legalize partisan political power grabs? But such is the case.

As the liberal led majorities in New Jersey’s State Senate and Assembly brace themselves for operating under the leadership of a newly elected Republican Governor, they are desperately trying to insure that they do not lose anymore elected positions than they expect to in the coming years.

The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman John McKeon, an Essex County Democrat, requires the Governor to temporarily fill U.S. Senate vacancies with a members of the same party as the person whose seat they fill and get rid of the current call for a special election to fill out the full term of any such vacancy.

This type of manipulation of the democratic process is much like that which Ted Kennedy initiated in Massachusetts. While lying on his deathbed, he penned a letter asking the state legislature to change existing laws which called fall vacancies in the United States Senate to be filled by the winner of a special election. In its place, Kennedy wanted the Governor to be able to appoint someone to fill the vacancy. The funny thing is that this was how vacancies use to be filled. But several years back, Massachusetts had a Republican Governor——-Mitt Romney. Back then, in 2004, it was feared that if Massachusetts Senator John Kerrey was elected President, Governor Romney would have appointed his replacement to his senate seat and it probably would not have been with a Democrat. So Kennedy asked the legislature to make sure that such a thing could not happen. He asked that the law be changed so that the vacancy was filled by a special election.

Fast forward 5 years and as Kennedy lay dying, since the new Governor of Massachusetts was a Democrat, like him, he asked that Massachusetts change the law back to what he originally opposed. This enabled liberal Governor Deval Patrick to appoint Kennedy’s replacement rather than risk losing the seat in a special election.

The episode was an example of political insincerity and it hit all time heights of hypocrisy. It was also a despicably low way for Ted Kennedy to end his life and career. But like everything else Ted Kennedy did, it influenced unscrupulous liberals to continue his legacy and go out of their way to manipulate the democratic process.

New Jersey Assemblyman McKeon’s bill is a shameful attempt to do the same that Kennedy did. Such attempts to change the process in New Jersey were not attempted when Governor Jon Corzine appointed Democrat Bob Menendez to fill his own vacated seat in the United States Senate. However, now that a Republican has the opportunity to yield the same power that they once had, they want the rules changed. But beyond that is the absolutely ridiculous, and totally blatant nature of just how partisan Democrats are willing to go. McKeon actually stresses that the seat must be filled by someone of the same party as the person whom they replace. That is unheard of. To actually try to legislate away any hope of nonpartisan politics is a dreadfully obnoxious attempt to block any opportunity for decency to play a role in politics. The proposed legislation actually makes it clear that McKeon and his cohorts believe party is more important than ability.

The push for such an embarrassingly partisan power grab does raise questions though.

Next month, five term liberal Senator Frank Lautenberg will turn 86 years old.

The man is already brain dead. He has been, even before he retired in 2000 and was illegally thrown back on the ballot in 2002 when Democrats were losing Bob Torricelli’s senate seat to Republican Doug Forrester. But since then, Lautenberg has truly been a non-entity. All of his activity takes place on press releases issued by his very large senate staff. Other than that, when Frank was running for reelection last year, he needed to be reminded of who he was and after having the drool wiped from his chin, reminded where he was.

Currently I believe both he and West Virginia’s Robert Byrd are propped up by leaning them against one another in the Senate chambers for appearances. But other than that they are useless. They are simply 2 more numbers helping Harry Reid, the Democrat senate majority leader, to maintain majority status and control.

Now until someone places a mirror under Lautenberg’s nose and confirms my assessment, Lautenberg is suppose to be 91 year’s old when his fifth term expires in 2015. That is unless, of course, it is proven that Lautenberg has actually expired before his term.

Perhaps this is why New Jersey Democrats want to change the rules. Could they themselves be realizing that they might not be able to prop up the comatose Senator for much longer? And could it be they fear that when the gig is up, Republican Governor Chris Christie could replace Lautenberg with a Republican who is actually breathing? My guess is that the answer is yes. But add to that the fact that things are not looking good for Democrats as they begin to lose more than they win. In this past November’s elections, they lost far more than they won. They lost County Executives, Governors, state legislative seats, Attorney Generals and as host of other local county, and statewide elected offices and all indications are that the trend is growing.

So Democrats are scared. They should be. But that is no excuse to manipulate the process. Democrats need to understand that their power should lie in superior leadership and ideas. It should lie in policies that are helping, not hurting people.

Apparently they realize that they and their policies are not superior. In fact, as time progresses, more and more people are once again realizing that Democrats are not good leaders and that their ideas and policies are inferior, not superior. That is why they losing their hold on power.. That is why they are all trying to practice Ted Kennedy’s deathbed policy that puts politics ahead of policy and politicians above the people.

Do they not have any shame?

In September of , 2001 President George W. Bush stated “This conflict was begun on the timing and terms of others. It will end in a way and at an hour of our choosing.” He spoke those words regarding Afghanistan and terrorists.

I found President Obama’s address to the nation regarding the future of our effort in Afghanistan to sound very Bush-like.

President Obama evoked the images of 9/11 to point out the need for our continued efforts in Afghanistan, although he tried to criticize the previous administration, he remained true to the withdrawal dates in Iraq that President Bush set, he spoke of the world’s duty to join us in our efforts and he reaffirmed the need to achieve our goals. All were that which were stressed by President George W. Bush.

What I found ironic was President Obama’s call for unity and the need to stand “behind a common purpose” as we pass through what he called a “time of great turbulence”. I also found great enjoyment in his closing statements that declared our being right as being our might and the need for our continued efforts to create “a world that is more secure”. Statements such as these, when made by former President Bush, received ridicule and were consider the excesses of bravado coming from a shoot ‘em first, ask questions later Texan. It will be interesting to see how the left responds to these type of remarks coming from President Obama.

I must admit that I do agree with President Obama’s assessment and his admission that the War in Afghanistan must be won and that we must have a clear mission and clear definition of what victory in Afghanistan is. I also agree with President Obama’s long awaited determination for a troop surge in Afghanistan to help achieve the needed victory that we must achieve. But what I am disturbed by is President Obama’s hypocrisy. Although the main topic of his recent address was regarding Afghanistan, he consistently denounced everything and opposed everything President Bush did in Iraq. He states that he always opposed that war and even called it a dumb one. Yet President Obama now talks about our need to make the world secure and is willing to throw American troops behind that drive for security. But what of that same need when it came to Iraq? In his own book, then Senator Obama made it clear that he believed Saddam Hussein sought nuclear weapons and had biological weapons.

For most people, it was understood that in the hands of Saddam Hussein, such weaponry posed too high a security risk. Many also understood that Saddam Hussein was in defiance of both United Nations resolutions and the longstanding ceasefire agreement between the US and Iraq after the first Gulf War. But Barrack Obama did not. Despite his admitted beliefs regarding Hussein’s intentions and capabilities, he contends that there was no need to insure security in the world in the case of Iraq and what’s more is, Barrack Obama certainly did not ask for the type of unity that he is seeking from all Americans now.

Yet despite the President’s opposition to the Iraq War, as both a Senator and now as President, he repeatedly admitted to a need for us to do all that we could to accomplish the mission in Iraq. What mission? The mission that he said is dumb?

President Obama spoke well in his national address on Afghanistan but he also spoke out of both sides of his mouth. While he opposed a troop surge in Iraq he wants a troop surge in Afghanistan. While he stated that he believed our effort in Iraq distracted from Afghanistan, President Obama remains committed to the timeline that President Bush laid out in Iraq

once we defeated the insurgent element that existed there.

Now in Afghanistan, President Obama is calling for the same things that President Bush often called for. He called for more troops. He called for unity and he called for our need to insure a world that is more secure.

Well, it’s about time.

President Obama made excuses for his taking much longer than necessary to finally approve the increased number of troops that he was asked for months ago. But all they are is excuses. He never should have hesitated. But the bottom line for me is that President Obama stepped up and moved towards achieving victory in Afghanistan. In doing so, he defied his base and it was for that reason that he addressed comparisons which some make between Afghanistan and Viet Nam. The President assured all that we face in Afghanistan is unlike Viet Nam and that our mission there is much more defined than it was in Viet Nam.

For sure, there will be those on the left who will not be happy with President Obama’s decision tonight. Two years ago, Barack Obama was standing in agreement with those people. However, now that he is President Barack Obama, he sees the national security needs and understands the threats that we face and from where they come from. That is why President Obama is calling for more troops in Afghanistan. It is why he admits to our need to provide security in the world. It is why he is calling for “unity” during turbulent times.

I will heed our President‘s call. I will unite behind his effort to provide a “a more secure world” which is something that he refused to do before he was President and bore that burden of.

I have never been a big fan of Mike Huckabee. He is a well spoken man who can appeal to ones logic and presents a homespun, commonsense message that makes you tend to agree with him. But a look at his ten years as Governor of Arkansas shows that the former preacher doesn’t always practice what he preaches when it comes to the practical application of government. A further looks leads me to conclude that this former Southern Baptist Minister cannot be trusted to effectively separate church from state.

I sense that in at least one aspect, the former Governor’s religious beliefs have been applied to governmental decisions in a way that may have allowed him to personally practice and adhere to his personal religious faith but to the detriment of government’s responsibility to public safety. This conclusion is not reached in haste. It is one that is not based solely on Mike Huckabee’s commutation of Maurice Clemmons, who recently killed 4 police officers in an ambush that took place in Washington state near Tacoma.

Huckabee has a long history of taking the Christian creed of hate the sin, love the sinner and applied too much forgiveness for the sinner when it comes to blind justice and government responsibility. Prior to today, the most prominent example of this existed in a case that came before the Governor about a decade ago.

Back in 1999, in a letter to then Governor Huckabee, a rape victim made clear her position regarding, Wayne Dumond, a man who was convicted of raping her.

She wrote;

“I feel that if he is released it is only a matter of time before he commits another crime and fear that he will not leave a witness to testify against him the next time.”

See several letters sent to the Governor: Letter From Rape Victim, Sept. 1996, Letter From Rape Victim’s Daughter, Sept. 1996, Letter From Rape Victim, Sept. 1999

Her prediction of events over the course of time came to fruition in Missouri, after Huckabee granted an early release from prison to Wayne Dumond. Thanks to Governor Huckabee’s compassionate concerns, 23-year-old Sara Andrasek of Platte County Missouri was raped and murdered. It was not until Dumond was arrested for the rape and murder by suffocation of another woman, 39 year old Carol Sue Shields, that it was discovered that he was also the rapist and murderer of Sara Andrasek. That was realized only one day before Dumond was arrested for the murder of Carol Shields…….one day too late for Sara Andrasek.

Mike Huckabee tried to explain away his decision which led to Dumond’s being freed. He claimed that he did not have any indication that would have led anyone to believe that Dumond was a continued threat to society. He even tried to deny that any letters from any of those who were raped but not killed by Dumond, were ever sent to the Governor’s office or the parole board.

This was just one prominent case that existed prior to the November massacre of the four policemen that Maurice Clemmons carried out after Governor Huckabee commuted his sentence.

In the 10 years that Huckabee served as Governor, he issued 1,000 commutations and pardons. This was a total that exceeded the total number of pardons and commutations that all three of his predecessors granted. I do not believe that Mike Huckabee is soft on crime or that he means to be soft on crime, but he is personally torn between practicing his faith and carrying out the duties of government.

A Minister’s job may be saving souls but a Governor’s responsibility is to protect lives and help make our lives better. In the case of Huckabee’s commutations and paroles, he did neither and it takes a great deal of personal restraint for me to not state that the former Governor bears a certain amount of responsibility for the rapes and deaths of women and now the massacre of 4 policemen. To make such a claim may not be fair but life is not always fair. The fact is that had Mike Huckabee not been so quick to make clear that he hates the sins but loves the sinners, a few sinners may not have had the opportunity to kill and rape and continue in the life of crime that his inordinate number of commutations and parole recommendations afforded criminals.

To be sure, Huckabee did not set any of these men free. This is a point the he makes in his own defense. It is true but it is not the full story and Huckabee must be made to understand that he made it possible for these men to be considered for parole and he allowed them to be released earlier than original sentences for their original crimes called for. So although it is true Huckabee did not set violent criminals free, he did expedite their release.

For that, Mike Huckabee indirectly assisted in causing the pain, suffering, violation and deaths of way too many. The former Governor may try to make excuses and claim that he did not have proper background information on the decisions he made. He could try to claim that no one could have known what these men would have done. That may be so, but what we do know is that had Wayne Dumond and Maurice Clemmons been serving their full prison sentences, they would not have victimized more people and their victims would not be dead. What we do know is that had Mike Huckabee not intervened, lives would have been spared.

Mike Huckabee can make excuses but there comes a point in time when one must just admit they are wrong and that they failed us. For Mike Huckabee, now that there exists more victims of his decisions than excuses for those decisions, that time is now.

He needs to admit to his mistakes and to try to live with himself knowing that as Governor of Arkansas, his decisions led to the deaths of many and the victimization of many more from coast to coast.

By POLITICS 24/7 guest blogger Michael Duminiak

There are those who claim that the reduction of freedom is not the foundation of the Obama Administration. As one who believes that Obama and his allies are indeed basing their agenda on the destruction of freedom, I think it is important to examine the concept of freedom. Clearly what it means to be free is not understood the same by all parties or else there would be universal agreement on opposing Obama’s agenda.

In truth, freedom is an illusive concept. Or at least it’s relationship to government makes it one. At its heart freedom is anarchy. It is the state of being completely and utterly free to do as you please. In a society such absolute freedom does not work as some would take actions that harm others. Absolute freedom and anarchy was certainly not what the framers of our nation had in mind when they created the Constitution that set limits both on the people and on the government.

In our society the word freedom is used when perhaps the word liberty would be better. By it we mean that power comes from the people who give some of their power to government to act as their agent for the common protection of everyone’s liberty. Government was created to ensure that each person was protected in his or her rights to the fullest possible extent – limiting freedom only to the degree necessary to protect the life, liberty and property of all. We are not free to take anything we want because that would infringe on the rights of those from whom we would take it. We are not free to kill those we dislike because that would infringe on the lives of those we would kill. We are not free to censor opinions we oppose as that would infringe on the liberty of those we sought to silence.

Our Constitution is, as Obama correctly stated, a document of negative powers. It states what government is limited to doing, reserving all else for the States or the people in their private lives. It seeks to empower government only to the minimum extent necessary to protect life, liberty and property. In that way, we remain free.

Over time those limitations have been eroded. Today a citizen is not free in his own home. The government has assumed the mantle of protector, nurturer, equalizer and enforcer. Where once you were free to do as you pleased almost without limit so long as you did not directly harm someone else, today we are bound by countless laws dictating everything from what kind of outlet you can have in your bathroom to how much water you toilet tank can hold.

Any law can be justified. Any problem can be solved on paper by passing a law, yet one look at our society will show that attempting to curtail liberty in an effort to reshape society is a failure. Banning a thing does not eliminate it. Regulating a thing does not eliminate malfeasance. All these thousands of laws based not on protecting our lives, liberty and property but rather on engineering some alternate vision of society do little more than strip the average citizen of the freedom to live their own lives. They obey these laws that they don’t need and lose their freedom as a consequence while those who carry out abuse continue to do so. In most cases, these criminals were already breaking an existing law long before we wrote a hundred more.

This brings us back to this administration. President Obama and his allies have a different view of the role of government than its original purpose. They see government as an appropriate vehicle to re-engineer society. They do not see government as existing to protect life, liberty and property but rather to regulate the way in which society operates. Their view is, to put it simply, the exact opposite of what the framers attempted to create with the Constitution.

If government seeks to raise one person’s standard of living by taking from another, the government has not preserved the freedom of the person it robbed. To make the argument that it isn’t robbery because the government did it and it is elected by the people is basically to buy into the excuse of Richard Nixon that “if the President does it, that means it isn’t illegal”. Yes the people elect the government, but the government is bound by the Constitution. Fostering economic equality is not one of the enumerated powers. Therefore it is, by the tenth amendment, reserved to the States or the people in their private lives.

If we look at the policies of this administration, we see their opposite view of the role of government underlying them all. Government control of banking, suspension of investor rights in the takeover of two auto manufacturers, dictating the types of light bulbs you may use in your own home, seizure of your private medical information and the list goes on and on. Yes, every action done by this administration can be justified with arguments on how those actions will potentially save money or improve the environment or increase efficiency. None of those things, however, is an enumerated power granted to the government by the people. Therefore all of those things are being done through the usurpation of power at the expense of personal and collective freedom.

We should pause to remember that American slaves had free housing, free food, free heat in the winter, free medical care and were cared for in their old age when they could no longer work. Those things are no substitute for freedom and thousands risked their lives and gave up all those things in an attempt to be free even if that meant starvation, sickness and homelessness. What this administration is doing today is turning back the clock and making us all slaves not of a few plantation owners, but of government itself. We lose the fruits of our labor to our government master and in return we get the barest of our necessities meted out in equal proportion. That isn’t freedom.

Indiana Congressman James Bopp , Jr. recently circulated a draft resolution for the Republican N

Indiana Congressman James Bopp , Jr. recently circulated a draft resolution for the Republican National Committee to implement a practicew that would essentially vet the candidates that the party fields for elected office as nominees whom they fund and endorse. The resolution would prohibit the RNC from endorsing or contributing financial resources to the campaigns of any candidate who oppose three or more of ten planks in the party platform.

The premise behind the draft resolution is one that I tend to support. But such a practice as that which is promoted by the effort would undoubtedly be followed by attempts from the left to paint the GOP as exclusive and intolerant, a party without a “big tent” and that shuns those who they do not agree with.

The problem is that the opposition will make this accusation no matter what and it is my opinion that the propaganda of the loyal opposition should not play a role in our commitment to the conservative principles which are the backbone of our Party and the source of security and prosperity for our nation. The attempt to create, what may be a litmus test, is something that, in the case of a political organization, could actually be quite useful when it comes to insuring that all its participants are working towards the same goals.

Many of us lay claim to one party or the other, not for the sake of the party name, but because, for us, it represents a set of core values that amount to an ideological approach to all matters. We are Republicans or Democrats, not because of its organizational membership but rather for the principles it represents and our belief that those principles need to be applied to the practical application of government.

Congressman Bopp puts it this way;

“All we’re requiring is that somebody agree with us most of the time,”

The point is legitimate. Especially from the standpoint of the RepublicanParty as a national entity which expends its resources on candidates at all levels, from Governor’s, to congressmen and senators. From a national point, does it make sense to endorse and finance the candidacy of an individual who claims to be a Republican but actually maintains an agenda that opposes the approach to governance and policies that the Republican National Committee is working toward?

The Bopp resolution has merit. It does not prohibit state or local Republican parties from endorsing and financing the candidacy of any Republican that they choose. But it does restrict the national party from aiding candidates who are counterproductive to our goals. This type of party policy would have come in quite handy in a case like New Yorks 23rd Congeressional District, where a group of Republican County chairmen tapped Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava to be the Republican nominee for Congress. This local level decision committed the Nationa Party to dedicate a hefty sum of money and resources to her campaign. But as it turned it, Scozzafava shared very little in common with the national Republican agenda. As the differences between her and the Party she claims to a member of beacame more and more clear, Republican voters began to flee from Scozzafava’s candidacy. many felt that there was no need to support a liberal oriented candidate when another one was honest enough to run under the banner of the more liberal oriented Party.

Before all was said and done, Scozzafava withdrew from the race only three day before Election Day. In the meantime, the RNC spent a few hundred thousand dollars on the failed candidacy of someone who mine as well have been a Democrat.

Some argue that such “lists” as the one which outlines 10 specific general principles that we as Republicans hold true is trivial. They feel it is ridiculous and stands in the way of freewill and freethinking. Some have stated that such a “list” this is the “dumbest idea they ever heard” .

I contend that one can try to trivialize this attempt as a “ stupid llist” but those who do, also run the risk of having that same flippant attitude applied to any documentation of what one believes in. One can try describe The Ten Commandments as a mere ”checklist of talking points and issues” and deemed as “the dumbest” Christian idea they “have heard in (their) lifetime“. One could also call those who believe in abiding by the Ten Commandments as part of a “fringe” group” but such interpretations would be would be ignorant and inappropriate.

Furthermore; why can an individual organization not establish its own operational guidelines and stipulate its stated goals and beliefs, especially of the governing rules of that organization allows a democratic vote to adopt such guidelines and reiterate what it stands for? Who is anyone to say that such actions are inappropriate? As for freewill, one is free to not particpaqte in any group or organization that does not share their views.

So I have no problem with the intent of the resolution. If there is enough support and if it is not somehow blocked by RNC Chairman Michael Steele, it could be voted on at the winter meeting of the Republican National Committee in January. My only suggestion would be to change some of the language. As much a devoted fan of one of the greatest contemporary Presidents , I would not base this resolution on one man only. As it existsnow the resolution is called the “RNC Resolution on Reagan’s Unity Principle for Support of Candidates“. I am not sure if that is the wisest way to go to about this. But I will also admit this. I would not want to be the one who goes on record as refusing to use the name of Ronald Reagan.

How far this resolution will go is not yet known. A spokesperson fot the RNC stated

”The deadline for submitting Resolutions for the RNC Winter Meeting is more than 30 days away. At this point, we do not know what resolutions will be submitted nor what the final language of any resolution ultimately submitted may be,”.

Below, you will find a poll asking your opinion on the issue and below that is the actual resolution and a likst of the National Committee Members who have so far sihnmed on to it. Review it and record your support or opposition to the reolution in our poll

Liberal Hypocrisy Proven Again! They Want A War Tax But Some Won't Pay Any Taxes

I consistently contend that liberals are hypocrites and that the contemporary, predominantly liberal, Democrat Party, possesses a hypocrisy based ideology.

Hypocrisy is so ingrained in liberalism that it seeps into everything from the way they do business to the policies they promote and the double standards they operate under.

For example. A $400 million dollar deficit after 8 years of President G.W. Bush drew repeated public denunciations by the left and cries of irresponsibility (which is actually true) but an epic $1.85 trillion deficit in 10 months under President Obama is seen as a good thing by liberals now.

Liberals claimed that Clarence Thomas was unfit for the Supreme Court because a comment he made about pubic hair on a can of coke inspired one Anita Hill to accuse him of sexual harassment. But according to these same liberals, the dozens of sexual harassment charges against President B.J Clinton, including those settled out of court, had no bearing on how fit he was to be Commander-and-Chief.

The list is endless, but recently I was struck by a group of liberal, civilian, conscientious objectors who oppose our national security interests and the war against the enemies confronting us.

WarTaxBoycott.org proudly promotes their “2009 War Tax Boycott” and they even ask you to participate in their 2010 War Tax Boycott. I was floored by the message this site offered. What shocked me was not their total refusal to understand why we are at war, or their unwillingness to accept the fact that what we are in the middle of is borne out of necessity (as President Obama admits). No. What made my eyes pop out was the utterly ridiculous level of hypocrisy they confirmed.

Here is some of what the site explained:

“$141,696 redirected from war to projects that serve humanity!

Half the signers to the 2009 War Tax Boycott refused to pay federal income taxes to the IRS and are giving the money to Direct Aid Iraq, Common Ground Health Clinic, or hundreds of other projects of their choice.”

Here’s the kicker…………….

“Other signers have chosen to reduce their income so that none of their money will go to war — with the added benefit of less consumerism.”

I was astonished by the liberal admission of the fact that less income in the pockets of individuals results in “less consumerism”.

Now in the case of this Brooklyn based pit of hypocrisy, they see less consumerism as a good thing because the reduced purchase power and lack of profit in America, in their small, warped minds, is an added sign of protest against our national security. However; the bottom line is that these liberals clearly connect less money in the pockets of taxpayers with less consumerism. So another words if one were to be allowed to keep more of the money they earned, they would spend more and their would be more of that much hoped for consumerism.

Is this not the exact same point they argue against when they denounce tax cuts?

In the meantime, while you have a portion of the Democrat Party refusing to pay their taxes because of our defense efforts, you have a leading liberal, Congressman David Obey, demanding that we create a “war tax”.

Are liberals actually this confused or are they really as stupid as they sound and act?

But just to accentuate the undeniability of liberal hypocrisy, I should mention that people like Congressman David Obey and Joe Klein, the liberal, so-called journalist of Time, are currently trying to argue that a “war tax” is patriotic, yet, at the same time, do they call it unpatriotic when liberals refuse to pay any taxes, as demonstrated by the 2009 War Tax Protest group?

The endless hypocrisy of the left is painfully obvious and incredibly obscene. But if you really want to blow a gasket, check out what Joe Klein had to say about Congressman Obey’s war tax. Not only does it add to my point, it also demonstrates the blatant level of political insincerity that liberals possess. Klein’s brief opinion of the war tax reveals the real reason behind it.

It is an attempt, on the part of the left, to exploit the war effort and turn it into a wedge issue to attack Republicans with. And we all know it! After all, do any of us believe that the same government which claims that stimulus dollares are creating jobs in Congressional Districts that do not exist , is actually going to insure us that their war tax goes to the war effort? Absolutely not!

These hypocrites really need to stop the lies and put an end to the games they’re playing.

Her face was etched with a history of struggles and her heart strengthened by a faith in a force that was the backbone of her survival. She was a bright lady, industrious and ingenious. Determined and strong willed, her fury could be unlike the scorn of no other, but compassion and fairness ruled her every action.

She was married to truth and loyal to justice. Her family was an unruly bunch and a large one too. It consisted of those born of her and those adopted into her arms. But all were embraced with equal amounts of love.

Each morning, she woke, without ever actually having fully slept, and prepared to fuel all those in her home with the energy to face the day ahead. Wheat from her heartlands was risen in dough. Corn from the fields she tilled flavored the muffins in wicker baskets made with her own hands, and the bacon cured and eggs laid on her farms, sizzled in the cast iron griddles milled from the iron mined out of her mountains.

When breakfast was done, the work had just begun. Every member of her family had to go out on their own. One by one, as each left, she reminded them of their bounty and of the future that could be theirs if they made the new day they embarked upon, more productive than the last.

Each of her loved ones did something different. They worked in auto factories, others in shipyards. Some worked as lawyers, others as teachers. Some kept financial records, tended bars, stocked supermarket shelves, sang beautiful songs and played magnificent music, prepared luscious meals, made haute couture, wrote for newspapers, provided protection and some cured the ill. What each one did, did not matter to her so much as did their doing it well. For sure, she knew that each one was as valuable as the other. She knew that without each one doing their part, her household would suffer. And suffering was not in her plan.

She herself had suffered many tough times. She had been faced with financial ruin, been battered and forced to face many violent confrontations. She had been stolen from, taken advantage of, beaten upon and endured mental anguish as she struggled with harsh decisions and extradoridnary moral and ethical questions. Her life was never easy and the assaults of time on her very being, often showed. Many adored her and looked up to her. Some were jealous of her, others were leery of her and a few often challenged her. But each challenge dropped in her lap and each hurdle crossed, made each of her many successes, all the more grand and incredibly more exhilarating. She took to the skies, crossed the seas, scaled over, through and under mountains, created artificial light and virtual reality, wrote enduringly prophetic pieces of literature, invented life saving practices and products, bridged islands and worlds and even gave birth to freedom, the force that she would eventually come to realize was the key to her being.

But she never basked too long in any glory.

Instead, she always looked forward and prepared herself for the next challenge ahead. The changing weather, the shifting earth, the roiling seas, the changing opinions and needs of her own family, and the influences of her neighbors, never allowed for a static day. And besides, she was too wise to ever sit on her laurels. The future offered too much promise to ever allow her to just be happy with what was, and too many counted on her own promise to make the most of what will be.

So she trudged ahead with the start of every new day. She knew that as tough as things may be, her freedoms enabled her, and all those in her family, to do their part so that each next challenge could be and would be overcome. By doing her part and insuring her household with freedom and also responsibilities, all those in her household could become increasingly strong and they in turn would keep the roof over their heads strong. She knew that as each member of her family did their part, in that which they were best at doing, the bounty of her existence would always be there.

Appreciative of all that bounty, as this day progressed, she prepared a meal for all to share as they came home from their missions.

She made sure that there was a place for everyone at her table, and as, one by one, they took their places, she placed atop the table a wealth of hearty riches that fed their hungry stomachs and fueled the hunger in their hearts for a better day tomorrow.

As they joined hands together as one family, they gave thanks for the wealth of the strong willed lady who provided and insured the freedom that allowed them to lead rich lives with endless opportunities.

Today Lady Liberty has set the table for a celebration of thanks for all that she has made available to us and all that she continues to offer us……..So long as, we all always, do our part.

Happy Thanksgiving America and thank you Lady Liberty. I love you.

John Adler is a freshman Democrat Congressman representing New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional Distr

He came to office after winning a close election down ticket from the landslide, 15% plurality that Barack Obama polled on the same line.

New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District is not a safe district for Democrats and Adler’s 2008 victory undoubtedly had a lot to do with the popularity of then Senator Obama. Under normal circumstances it very well may not have happened. The 3rd C.D. was previously occupied by Republicans for more than two decades by James Saxton who decided to retire and not stand for reelection. The stars were aligned perfectly for Adler. It was an open seat, his Republican opponent ran a lousy campaign and the Republican nominee at the top of the Republican didn’t even excite Republicans. Whereas, Adler ran a well financed campaign that offered some crippling negative ads against his Republican opponent and was further aided by the trickle down of support on the Democrat ticket from the punishing popularity of Barack Obama.

But 2010 may not be as good.

President Obama is not on the ticket and even if he was, the shine has been taken off his image and Democrats are all suffering from a precipitous drop in popularity. To make matters worse, for Democrats, incumbents are totally out of favor with the electorate. Add to that the fact that the popular, newly elected Governor of New Jersey will be available to throw his support behind the Republican nominee for Congress in the 3rd and a slew of votes that Adler voted on the wrong side of and what you have is a lining up of stars against Adler’s favor this time around.

Adler’s recent votes for things such as the extreme Cap-and-Traded bill and other historic spending measures have not exactly pleased moderates and right of center 3rd district voters and could provide great fodder to attack Adler with. At the same time, in an attempt to not totally alienate himself with the moderate and right leaning voters of the 3rd, he was one of those Democrats who was let off the hook by Nancy Pelosi and allowed to vote against the government healthcare takeover bill. While that may have not infuriated some, it has turned Adler’s own liberal against him.

For them, as depicted in the ad seen here, Adler’s lack of support for socialist medicine on that one vote, is considered an “act of betrayal” to fellow Democrats and they intend to punish him. And they may just not be willing to sit at home and support him. They are preparing to run someone against him in a primary.

So Adler will be weak and vulnerable.

And now, here comes Jon Runyan.

Runyan is an offensive lineman in the NFL who is currently playing for the San Diego Chargers but spent more than 9 years as a popular player with the popular Philadelphia Eagles, a team that carries a lot of influence in the southern portions of the Jersey district which is filled to the rim with loyal Eagles fans.

The 35 year old Runyan has announced that this will be his last year in the NFL as he intends to retire from running in the football and start running for Congress….against John Adler. He made his candidacy known in communications with South Jersey Republican county leaders. In his remarks, he stated;

“I look forward to a successful end to my career on the field,” Runyan said, “and a spirited campaign against Congressman Adler in 2010.”

Where exactly Jon Runyan stands on the issues is not known. That small fact should be enough to contain any enthusiasm but I have a strong sense that a man who has been literally busting his bones for a living, probably has a conservative things and it sounds to me like he is fed up with the lurch to the left that the nation has taken. I also have a feeling that the slew of votes that his new representative in Congress has made, which helped to promote that leftward turn, doesn’t sit well with Runyan. In fact, I would say it has pissed off him enough to throw some muscle behind his opinions and jump from the gridiron and into the fire of the stadium of politics.

If that is true, has yet to be seen, so while I will not start jumping down in glee over Runyan, I do hold out hope and look forward to hearing what he to say.

Looking past next year’s midterm elections, another New Jerseyan is making his plans clearer.

In an interview on Former Senator Fred Thompson’s radio show, Lou Dobbs, who recently ditched the low rated CNN, made it clear that he is considering a 2012 run for the US Senate against New Jersey liberal Bob Menendez. Dobb also suggested that it could be a stepping stone to the White House.

That to me is a little arrogant of Dobbs and not exactly what voters who elect you to be their senator want to hear. They want to know that if the elect you, they can count on you to do the job they elected you to. And besides, try to win the senate seat before you go trying to to move into into the White House in 2016.

Summertime often provides a steady stream of traffic. If you’re not struggling through rush hour traffic on the weekday, come late afternoon Friday, you’re finding yourself coping with congested roads filled with weekend tourists traveling to the mountains, the beaches, the lake or the quaint and once quiet hamlet that becomes inundated by antiquing city slickers. Yet as busy and as rough as things can be made by summertime fun and sun seekers, when the holidays come rolling around, that’s when you really start pulling your hair out.

No holiday provides for more traffic than Thanksgiving. All transportation organizations, from triple A to the National Highway Safety Administration and the FAA, all concede that the Thanksgiving holiday makes for the most heavily traveled day of the year. Everyone is rushing to make it home in time to be with friends and loved ones before the turkey hit’s the table.

Then when the turkey is done and the last piece of pumpkin pie has been wrapped up for a guest to take home with them, Black Friday hits.

Any roadway within five miles of any mall or shopping hub comes to an agonizing crawl as we all join in the traditional holiday gift shopping season. It isn’t disturbing enough that you had to mortgage the house to buy gifts for co-workers you really don’t like and find special presents for the strangers who are the guests of family members that will be spending Christmas with you, but now your are sitting in an hour long back up on the Garden State Parkway. You have been elbowing your way through endless crowds of crazed Moms knocking over other women and children to make sure that Bobby , Jr. gets that latest monogrammed cell phone cover or the newest “Rap Idol” game player. No,—- now your legs are cramping, your feet are killing you, you have to pee, its starting to snow and you know that even without traffic, you’re still more than a half an hour from home.

And then it happens.

That jackass in the BMW, jumping up in down in his seat to some horrible tune playing so loudly on his stereo that the windows are vibrating, is screeching up along side of you on the shoulder just as you are at the merge.

And he just keeps trying to inch in front of you like you’re not even there.

What are you gonna do? You keep looking at him but he is ignoring you. To him you don’t exist. You honk and he honks back as he keeps trying to inch in. You’re ready to shoot the guy, but you know you left your gun at home because you knew that at some point during this day, you would be too tempted to use it. You want to roll down the window and curse him at the top of your lungs, but the kids are in the backseat and you really don’t think it appropriate to be shouting out profanities over your radio that is playing Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer for the umteenth time. At least not in front of the kids.

You’d get out of the car but you know that as soon as you step out, the traffic will start moving and besides, the punk in the BMW may not have left his gun at home like you did.

Your screwed and all you can do is hope that this game of chicken doesn’t wind up denting your car. And since you’re in the ‘01 Chevy Cavaleir and he’s in the ‘09 BMW, you really don’t want to pay for the damage to his two door lease. So whatta ya do?

Well now there’s Plate Hate.

Just let that punk go. Let him get in front of you so that you can take his plate number down because when you get in the house, after you drop the dozen or so bags that you just went into hock for, and after you run to the bathroom, go make yourself a nice cup of coffee and turn on the computer. Once it has loaded up and is ready to go, let your fingers fly across the keyboard as you type in http://platehate.eu/ . Once there, let the whole world know about that jackass.

Plate Hate is a site where fellow victims of inconsiderate, reckless and plain old stupid drivers can register their rage in a safe and “slightly” more civilized way than actually demonstrating your physical rage on the face of that idiot that cut you off. Here you get to post their license plate number and describe the offenders actions. And you can do so by expressing all the contempt for the inconsiderate jerk, that you want.

The creators of the site write:

“You need to relax a bit. Road rage isn’t good for anyone, least of all the rest of the drivers who may be affected by you doing something stupid to counter what just happened to you. Take a deep breath, take some consolation that you’re a better driver that the moron in the X5, and have a rant here. It’ll make you feel better.”

The developers of Plate Hate are actually right. You never know who you’re dealing with and no one is worth having your holidays ruined for. But still there is always that need to get back at those fools who are driving while brushing their hair or putting on lipstick. You can never quite just totally let go of that schmuck who was doing 90 mph and zigzagging in and out of lanes and cutting off car after car.

That’s what makes Hate Plate so great. You no longer need to even deal with such unsavory persons as that. Just wait till you’re home and then let the world know just how much of an ass that inconsiderate driver you encountered really is. A tour of Hate Plate will also make you feel less alone in the world. Looking at the comments of others will make you realize that you are not the only one confronting the most obnoxious drivers or those uniquely dangerous maneuvers and traffic violations that the cops are never around to see

There are all sorts of comments about infractions others have had to endure. For example :

7301BE -Lexington, KY, US – Thu, 19th Nov 2009 – (0 comments)

“Park between the lines bitch!!”

or there was this;

GTT 6028 - Zelienople, PA, US – Mon, 16th Nov 2009 – (2 comments)

“Blows through stop sign almost hitting us. Then doesn’t like being flashed lights. Tough guy is going to shoot us.”

Then there’s this one from Texas. We’ve all been behind this guy:

OLE MEX – North Houston, US – Mon, 16th Nov 2009 - (1 comment)

“The speed limit along Veterans Memorial is 45 mph, but this A** can’t seem to get it over 35. My time is being wasted and nobody has the fricken right to waste my time but me. Someone told me that illegal Mexicans don’t drive very fast because they don’t want to be pulled over. If that is the case then this dumb A** is on the most wanted list.”

According to the person behind Plate Hate ;

“being the cynical type who believes that any calls to a ‘how’s my driving’ hotline would be promptly answered by a spotty automaton, thought that maybe the perfect place to vent their rage would be on the Internet. Where people actually care*“.

The meaning of the asterisk is denoted as follows “* flame the opinions of others, relentlessly”.

Hate Plate was first created in the UK, but I for one am glad that someone brought it to the states. After all, those guys in the the UK are all messed up. They legally drive on the wrong side of the road but here in America, it is not a habit we appreciate. So having a place to blast those who do stuff like here, is a great relief.

Look at Plate Hate as online holiday stress relief . See it as an early Christmas present, one that will help you make it to Christmas Day, without having an anurism due to all the S.O.B.’s driving around you. I for one fully expect to be taking advantage of Plate Hate this Thanksgiving when I suspect the site to be as busy as the roadways.

Oh……..By the way, if you are one of those drivers people like us hate and you find your plates on the site and wish to have them pulled off, the creators of Plate Hate have the following message……………

“Maybe you should be a little more considerate when you’re driving your vehicle?”

That’s a pretty good idea, especially during a time of the year when we’re suppose to be giving thanks and celebrating goodwill to all.

Today, the families of 9/11 victims gathered together to make an emotional appeal for support from fellow Americans.

Led by Debra Burlingame, the sister of Charles Burlingame, the pilot of the hijacked plane that was intentionally flown into The Pentagon, the “9/11 Never Forget Coalition” urged all to join them on December 5th at Foley Square in New York at 12 noon for a protest against Attorney General Eric Holder’s decision to allow the 5 enemy combatants who admitted to their having a role roll in the events of 9/11, to have a civilian trial.

Along with first responders and elected officials Burlingame made a passionate appeal for all of us to join together and and make it clear that the five madmen who willingly and proudly took part in a conspiracy that killed nearly 3,000 Americans, must be tried in a military tribunal.

Perhaps some of you do not understand how wrong minded the decision for a civilain trial was. Perhaps the phrase “civilian trial” needs to be explained inorder to fully comprehend the true meaning of what the Obama Administration did here.

Civilian trials are a place where American civilians are allowed to exercise their rights.

By deciding to have a civilian trial for the 5 enemey terrorists who were caught on the field of battle during combat and confessed their guilt , President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder are essentailly giving the radical Isalmic jihadists more rights than they are allowed or should be allowed. These 5 mass murderers are not Americans, do not have the rights of Americans, and should not be accorded such rights.

Ladies and gentlemen have you forgotten that WE ARE AT WAR WITH TERRORISM!

It is not some bumper sticker slogan or an opportunity for liberals to mock the defense of America. It is real and it is happening right now.

As such, this nation decided, officially, that we are to try those involved in terrorism as war criminals. By not doing so and by giving the 9/11 Five a civilain trial in place of a military tribunal, we are actually giving the enemy more rights. Is that what this Administration stands for? Do they really want to grant the enemy more rights to and in our democracy? Is this how President Obama intends on conducting this war?

There is absolutely NO REASON why these 5 soldiers of Allah who initially confessed their complictiy in 9/11 and were captured as enemy combatants , should be given rights that are not theirs and granted a forun in n American civilian court of justice. There are reasons why war criminals are tried in military tribunals. There are reasons why cases involving the military are tried by the military and those same reasons must be applied here.

Currently there are 6 navy seals who are facing charges involving a terrorist whom they captured and took in to custody. The prisoner was brought in with a fat lip. For this, these 6 seals who eliminated the threat of another terrorist on the field of battle, are beimng charged with abuse and having their lives put on hold as a military tibunal awaits them……a MILITARY TRIBUNAL!. NOT A CIVILIAN TRIAL!

Now President Obama and Eric Holder are willing to grant the five 9/11, enemy combatant conspirators the right to a civilian trial, but 6 Americans serving their country and combatting terrorism are denied the same right. Is this logical? Is there not a stench of deeply hypocritical injustice permeating the atmosphere here?

The justice department and the courts belong to the American people. They do not belong to the foreign enemies and war criminals who are trying to kill us. For President Obama to allow them access to “our” courts, is a crime in and of itself.

I urge you to listen Debra Burlingame in the video below and hear her appeal at today’s 9/11 Never Forget press conference. In it you will be made to see that you are not alone in your anger at the President and Attorney General. You will also come to understand why it is so important for us to stand together, with her, and all those effected by 9/11, to show not just our opposition to the sick decision of the Administration, but to show exactly how angry and offended we are.

This is no joke folks….we are giving the enemies the benefit of the doubt and by placing them in a civilian court, President Obama is declaring that these war criminals who killed almost 3,000 Americans are innocent and not guilty of the war crimes they admitted to. He is also giving the enemy the type of stage that is usually reserved for the attention that their terrosit attcks afford them. One of these terrorists own defense attorney has warned that the decision to have to try his client is a national security risk. And do we actually need an expert to tell us that the actual trial and attention that these five jihadist heros will receive, are sure to incite and inspire an enemy reaction that will be anything but helpful to our efforts to combat terrorism.

The following is the press release issued by the 9/11 Never Forget Coalition:

SATURDAY DECEMBER 5 RALLY
IN FOLEY SQUARE:
STOP THE TERROR TRIAL IN NYC!

NEW YORKERS TO ATTORNEY GENERAL HOLDER:
“WE WILL FIGHT YOU ALL THE WAY!”

What: December 5th rally protesting the NYC based trial of 9/11 conspirators
Where: FOLEY SQUARE, MANHATTAN
When: Saturday, December 5th, 2009 12:00 noon
Who:

The 9/11 Never Forget Coalition, a diverse group of 9/11 victims, family members, first responders, active and reserve members of the military, veterans, and concerned Americans, is holding December 5th rally protesting the plan to bring the 9/11 terrorist conspirators to trial in New York City.
The Coalition formed to fight the decision of President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder to try the 9/11 co-conspirators in New York City’s federal court, effectively giving war criminals the same rights as American citizens while endangering the safety of all New Yorkers.

Two weeks ago, we sent a letter signed by 300 family members of 9/11 victims to the President, Attorney General and Defense Secretary Robert Gates asking them to reverse course. The letter has now been signed by over 120,000 Americans and is posted at http://www.keepamericasafe.com.

Debra Burlingame, founder of 911 Families for a Safe and Strong America, said “Our rally on Saturday, December 5 will tell Attorney General Eric Holder, President Barack Obama and their supporters in Congress: We will fight you all the way! ”
