It started out with Ne-yo’s upcoming concert. Dare I pull such stunts? I’d rather not say yet time will tell.

The gathering was not frequent but of substance each time. Just like that impromptu Mersing getaway. It was just as funny this time round.

Avatar and Sam Worthington was something we girls were looking forward to. Zombieland came highly recommended.

A bunch of us watched cute, adorable cats on youtube on the small iphone screen. I wish I had that surprise kitty. Sure would make my day each time!

What is up with Fiona Xie and men? We could understand Maggie Q but Fiona? Ok…whatever.

The best had got to be the debate. The top debate of 2009 I should say. Team Yakult or Team Vitagen? Yes I know, a no brainer. Of course Yakult, hands down but oh no, one had to just disagree against a clan.

There was that walk down memory lane of how 2009 began. Yeah, I never want to get to that lane, ever again despite pulling off a 27 Dresses. The lane shall be closed forever.

The last was the unexpected one of the lot. Battle of the horoscopes. I know, so random.

Nonetheless it was concluded Cancerians are the well balanced, coolest lot. We talked like that ’cause we can back it up.

Game 5 was the last game of the main tour.  Five others and I would continue on to see the rest of the parks.

Jingu Stadium is the home of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.  Yakult is a dairy company- they make a kind of yogurt drink.  The Swallows are the cross-town rival of the Yomiuri Giants since they both play in the Central League.  Adding to the rivalry, a popular Swallows player named Alex Ramirez jumped over to the Giants, reiterating the belief that the Giants always get what they want because they are the richest team.

Jingu Stadium is nice, but our seats weren’t that comfortable.  We were in the front row of a section with a walkway in front of it.  While you couldn’t ask for more leg room, sitting in front of a walkway is not fun, since people selling concessions and people who are looking for their seats keep getting in the way.

The Carp had a no hitter through six innings.  I had never seen a no hitter before and I was hoping that this was the day.  A long time ago, I saw a one hitter (though we got to the stadium late and missed the hit), but that’s the closest I’ve been to seeing a no-hitter in person.

Aoki, one of the better players on the Swallows, broke up the no hitter with a bunt base hit.  It was a cheap hit.  In the MLB, he would have been beaned the next time he was up.

The Carp won the game easily, with a final score of 9-0.

There wasn’t much in this game for the Swallows fans for cheer, but there is a tradition at Swallows games where they hold up umbrellas when the team is having a rally.  The reason for this tradition, according to what I heard, goes back to the rivalry between the Swallows and the Giants.  The use of the umbrella has to do with the fact that the Swallows play in an outdoor stadium and are therefore “tougher” than the Giants, who play in a dome.

Oggi parliamo di yogurt. Quando ero ragazzo nel supermercato c’erano solo tre o quattro marche, e lo yogurt si distingueva fra quello bianco e quello alla frutta, con alcuni (ma non tantissimi) gusti: fragola, banana, malto, ananas, ciliege  e poco più. Oggi se andate in un supermercato trovate metri e metri di scaffali ripieni di yogurt di tutti i tipi: in quello in cui vado io, occhio e croce, lo scaffale dello yogurt è di circa 6 – 7 mt. di lunghezza per 2 di altezza. Ormai lo yogurt non è più un prodotto “semplice” (latte che ha subito una fermentazione da parte di alcuni bacilli che hanno trasformato il lattosio in acido lattico) ma grazie ai maghi del marketing è diventato un elisir di lunga vita: ci sono yogurt che aumentano le difese immunitarie, alcuni che vi fanno andare al bagno come orologi svizzeri ed infine altri che vi permettono di mangiare tutte le schifezze dei fast food garantendovi che bevendo una boccettina vi rimetteranno a posto il colesterolo… Presto avremo sicuramente anche qualche yogurt che guarirà le unghie incarnite! Se proprio non abboccate al richiamo degli yogurt “salutistici” i pubblicitari vi attireranno con messaggi godereccio-sensuali: avete presente lo slogan “fate l’amore con il sapore”? Non avete una donna? Uno yogurt vi eviterà il ricorso alle escort o alle bambole gonfiabili del sexy shop…

Perchè tutta questa premessa? Perchè nei giorni scorsi l’Efsa, ovvero L’Autorità Europea per la Sicurezza Alimentare, ha bocciato la bellezza di 180 claims pubblicitari di bacilli probiotici, a seguito dalle analisi fatte dal panel che si occupa di prodotti dietetici, alimentazione e allergie. E’ semplicemente emerso che non esistono prove scientifiche sulla reale efficacia dei probiotici nel mantenere le promesse veicolate dai messaggi pubblicitari salutistici.

Microrganismi, esatto…sono alcuni esempi di nomi di probiotici, batteri selezionati dai centri di ricerca delle aziende del settore e aggiunti a vari prodotti. Qualche nome dei probiotici e le aziende che li hanno immessi sul mercato.

Ma sono così indispensabili per il benessere intestinale e per rinforzare le difese immunitarie? E’ quello che abbiamo sentito per anni negli spot della pubblicità.

Dopo tanti proclami,l’Efsa, per la precisione il panel che si occupa di prodotti dietetici, alimentazione e allergie, chiamata a pronunciarsi sui numerosi claims, ha risposto con una sonora bocciatura. 180, dico 180 richieste di autorizzazione dei claims sono state respinte al mittente.

A leggere i reports dell’Efsa viene da chiedersi come possa accadere che alcune aziende abbiano sottoposto documenti scientifici così carenti o addirittura privi di dati riferiti ai propri prodotti. [...]

I due principali protagonisti del settore Danone (Actimel) e Yakult, non sono stati inclusi nello studio perché le due aziende -si legge in alcuni quotidiani stranieri- hanno ritirato le loro pratiche prima che potessero essere valutati. Essi hanno ripresentato solo piu’ di recente le loro richieste. I risultati, saranno disponibili il prossimo anno.

E adesso un interrogativo, come mai non troviamo traccia di questi dati sui quotidiani?[...]

La domanda sul perchè nella stampa italiana nessuno ne abbia parlato se l’è posta anche Roberto La Pira (storico giornalista che si occupa di tutela dei consumatori), che sul suo blog scrive:

Anche in Germania, Olanda e  Svezia  la notizia ha fatto breccia. Alcuni giornali inglesi sostengono che Danone e  hanno addirittura ritirato la richiesta di certificazione sui benefici dei probiotici inviata tempo fa, per evitare brutte sorprese e hanno ripensato il dossier.  In Italia non ne ha parlato nessuno. [...] L’Efsa precisa che  la news sul sito della BBC è stata tra le prime dieci  più cliccate e dice che le richieste di chiarimenti da parte di giornalisti europei per questo comunicato  sono state otto volte superiori rispetto alla media. Possibile che i giornalisti italiani abbiano bucato così la notizia?[...]

Personalmente da anni autoproduco il mio yogurt secondo i dettami di Maurizio Pallante e della decrescita felice… Ecco come faccio: innanzitutto, per non perdermi fra pentolini, termometri, forno, etc mi sono comprato una yogurtiera dal modico prezzo di circa 12€ che mi permette di produrre 7 vasetti di yogurt con 1 lt. di latte. Prendo uno yogurt intero bianco da agricoltura biologica, sciolgo il contenuto del vasetto in un litro di latte crudo biologico  o in assenza di questo, nel latte fresco biologico del supermercato, verso nei vasetti e lascio una nottata nella yogurtiera, poi chiudo i vasetti e li metto nel frigo. L’ultimo vasetto di yogurt autoprodotto lo uso per rifare lo yogurt successivo, questo per circa 6 o 7 volte (a meno che qualcuno in casa non si mangi l’ultimo vasetto). Dopo 6 o 7 volte riparto usando uno yogurt bio bianco comprato al supermercato (magari cambiando marca), per rinnovare la famiglia dei bacilli!

Il tutto alla faccia dei probiotici! E quando voglio “fare l’amore con il sapore”, prendo il mio yogurt autoprodotto, ci metto un paio di cucchiai di marmellata di fragole biologica fatta in casa, slurp, slurp… e vai col “sesso sicuro”!

Another week, another food and drink company rebuked by the Advertising Standards Authority for running an advertising campaign that made unsubstantiated claims about the health benefits derived from its products.

The Glaceau Vitamin Water ‘More muscles than brussels’ campaign banned last week was, above all, silly in its health pretensions. Coca-Cola, which owns the brand, fell below its usual high standards in this area, but the outcome is hardly going to do significant damage to the soft drink giant’s image.

Not so for Danone. The ban imposed on its Actimel health drink campaign is altogether more serious. Health and ‘wellness’ are at the very core of the European food manufacturer’s positioning. Indeed, chief executive Franck Riboud underlined this very point a couple of years ago when he sold off the “unhealthy” bits of Danone, such as the LU biscuit business, to Kraft; precisely to concentrate on health-enhancing neutraceutical products such as probiotics Actimel, Activia and Yakult (which Danone now part owns).

Up to now, this strategy has paid dividends. The fat margins (the only fat you’ll find in a lean business) that accrue to probiotics has allowed Danone to wage a successful recession. A fading celebrity like Nell McAndrew will have been able to relaunch her career on near-ubiquitous presence in Activia commercials, at at time when much of the rest of the industry was scaling back its ad spend. It’s paid off handsomely for Danone, too. Sales of Activia rose 38% in the year to the end of February, according to Nielsen. Similar large spends have been put behind Actimel, starring Sir Bobby Charlton and Felicity Kendal, with similarly gratifying results.

But this ban on the latest ad puts a spanner in the works. The advertisement shows a bottle of Actimel jumping over a skipping rope while a voiceover makes the claim: “Scientifically proven to help support your kids’ defences.”

As far as the ASA is concerned the claim is far from “scientifically proven”, despite the  wealth of clinical data Danone has adduced in its defence. This is a finding, and a ban, which undermines Danone’s core positioning.

Naturally, Danone can water down the language it uses and hope to blur the health-giving benefits a little. But that course is ultimately suicidal for probiotics products, which justify their handsome price premium over ‘ordinary’ yogurts precisely on the fact that they have “scientifically proven” credentials.

The ASA is by no means Danone’s only worry in this respect. The regulators in Brussels are also gunning for it. Empowered by a new raft of more punitive legislation, the EU-backed European Food Safety Authority is going through all food health claims with a fine tooth comb. Of the 70 it had surveyed at last count, 66 failed to pass muster. Danone, so far as I know, has had to redraft all significant health claims underpinning the promotion of Activia and Actimel and is awaiting their approval. Whether it will get that approval, I have no idea.

It’s conceivable, the way things are going, that any kind of health claim attached to food or drink promotion will in a few years time become as quaint as “Guinness is Good For You.”

Game 1 was at the Tokyo Dome (also called “The Egg”), is the home park for the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants (Yomiuri is a Newspaper company).  The Giants are the oldest and most famous of the Japanese Baseball teams.  This year they celebrate their 75th year.  They are often compared to the New York Yankees, since they win a lot of pennants and have seemingly endless amounts of money to attract the best, highest price talents.  Recently, they lured star player Alex Ramirez away from cross-town rival Yakult (who they were playing in this game).

The area around the Tokyo Dome is called Dome City and contains an amusement park (with roller coasters and a ferris wheel) and restaurants, including one that I believe is the Japanese version of Medieval Times.  I didn’t go inside because it looked like you had to pay to get in, and I didn’t have the time.

In the Dome itself, there are restaurants (where I had a Japanese hamburger, which is more like a meatloaf sandwich), the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame, a gift shop that sells trinkets representing all the teams in the league, as well as a separate shop selling jerseys, posters, etc., for Japanese players in the US.

This was the first time I’d ever watched a ball game inside a domed stadium.  Seattle has a retractable roof that is open on the sides, so it’s not a “true” dome.

It was an interesting game.  A player hit a ball that hit off the roof.  The ball is live when it comes off the roof, so the batter got a double.  The game ended in a 3-3 tie after twelve long innings – the game was over five hours long.

One of the first things I noticed about watching the Japanese game were the cheering sections.  In each park, there are designated sections (usually in the outfield where the bleachers would be in a US ballpark) for the more exuberant fans for each team can cheer.  These cheering sections are highly organized and very loud.  There are specific cheers for each team and a lot of times, a player will have his own cheer.  Folks in the cheering sections will bring drums, trumpets, and their voices.  The cheers happen while their team is at bat- in other  words, when Yakult was up, the Yakult cheering section cheered and chanted and when the Giants were up, the Giants cheering section cheered and chanted.  In all the parks, the home cheering section was larger than the visiting teams, however in a couple of cases, the visiting team’s section cheered louder.

Outside of the cheering sections, fans still cheer (they cheer and chant along with the cheering section), they just aren’t as loud.

Another thing I noticed at this game, but was clearer to me later on: there’s no booing at Japanese baseball games.  You’d think the cheering sections would be as exuberant with their boos as with their cheers, but that isn’t the case.  There are collective moans, and maybe a shout or two at a bad call from the umpire or a player’s bone-headed play, but no booing like you would hear in a US ball park.  I only noticed this when I decided to boo the end of a rally and I noticed that only my group (of Americans) were booing.

Até que fim depois de passar minhas provas da faculdade e também as aulas para tirar a CNH. Eu consegui terminar de ler Crepúsculo.. Não podia deixar de vir comentar… Porque eu sempre ouvi.. “o livro é bem melhor que o filme” e eu tenho que concorda.  Nossa o livro tem uma riqueza de detalhes, que esclareceu muitas duvidas que tinha quando vi o filme, e sem conta que o filme destorce muitas coisas, do livro. Penso que eles deveriam seguir a risca o que esta no livro.. fica sem nexo.

Agora vou começar a ler Lua Nova, sabe não tenho pressa nenhuma, quando der pra terminar eu termino… Ate que eu termine todos os livros vai demorar bastante… Mais tenho outras coisas em primeiro plano, fazer o que né.   Falando em Lua Nova, estou anciosa pra ver o filme… Novembro que não chega logo.

Meu Final de Semana, foi bem tranquilo… Sabado fui na igreja.. Esta tendo novela de Nossa Senhora Aparecida.. e depois eu e meu amoor fomos lanchar. E domingo passamos o dia todo em casa dormindo,  vendo TV e tomando muito sorvete tava um calor imenso.

Semana passada o pessoal da faculdade conversando lembramos de YAKULT.. Nossa me deu uma vontade, agora no final de semana indo ao mercado.. não resisti, tive que compra..  Cara é o melhor… Quando era criança isso não faltava aqui em casa. Sem falar nos chocolates.

I didn’t take this photo because I wanted to make a post on breakfast. It was supposed to be the first in a series of photos of my drive from Irvine to Dublin the other day. This just so happens to be the only picture I ended up taking that day. I drive back and forth from Orange County to East Bay so often and I always intend on documenting my journey but it never happens. Anyway this is how I usually like to start my day. It’s nothing fancy, just a banana, yogurt drink, and always 2 cups of coffee (not pictured). It helped get me set for the 6 hours of hell on the I-5 Tuesday. On a side note I did see a brand new black GTR and a gangster, white R34 GTR both heading in the opposite direction.

Já li sobre várias teorias de conspiração e confesso que nunca dei muita importância, mas é mais uma das coisas que a gente só se identifica quando acontece com alguém perto de nós.

Moro um pouco distante do meu trabalho e percorro diariamente o trajeto com meu carro, cerca de 20 quilômetros. Nesses 20 quilômetros cruzo por ao menos umas 4 kombis com o simples dizer nas laterais: “Yakult”. São veículos brancos, de vidros brancos (não transparentes) e uma faixa verde claro, com nada a mais que as identifique, seja telefone, endereço, email ou site da internet.

Quem vê os veículos de entrega de uma empresa nas ruas da cidade percebe que cada kombi, caminhão ou van é uma verdadeira vitrine da empresa. São exibidos marcas, linhas de produtos, endereços, telefones em números garrafais e mais recentemente endereços eletrônicos de site da internet e e-mail. Então porque uma empresa colocaria somente o nome Yakult em seus veículos? E se eu quiser comprar para onde ligo? Se precisar de mais informações onde acho?

Algumas pessoas já me comentaram que tratam-se de negócios ilegais, veículos de fachada, coisas estranhíssimas são transportadas por trás daqueles vidros brancos…

Outro dia eu vi uma dessas kombis parada em uma grande avenida. O aparato policial em sua volta, segurança e controle de tráfego pareciam ser dignos de um líder de estado, coisa incomum para um simples veículo de entrega. O que haveria de tão especial naquele veículo que exigiu tanta precaução em sua volta?

Me pergunto ainda porquê há tantas kombis de Yakult rodando pela cidade? As embalagens são pequenas e uma kombi consegue transportar uma carga suficiente para muitos dias de vendas. Eu ao cruzar a cidade encontrei 4 desses veículos mas imagino que uma frota muito superior trafegue pelas ruas.

Voltando ao assunto de que tipo de outras coisas estariam por trás dos vidros brancos das kombis de Yakult, já ouvi falar que são usadas para transporte de malotes, vigilância discreta de pessoas sob investigação, busca-entrega de clínicas clandestinas de aborto, tele-entrega de drogas, radar-móvel… Não me surpreenderia se um dia me dissessem que alguém acordou dentro duma kombi dessas mergulhado numa banheira cheia de gelo com um bilhete dizendo que os rins teriam sido extraídos…

1.-El bien ser: Honesto, puntual, disciplinado. Por ejemplo: Si en todo nuestro país  5 millones de personas llegan 10 minutos tarde a su trabajo estamos perdiendo 50 millones de minutos en esta nación. Por eso no se puede jugar con el tiempo y menos con el tiempo de las demás personas.

2.-Principio fundamental del respeto. Si no es tuyo debe ser de alguien. Si esta pluma te la encontraste en un escritorio debe ser de alguien, entonces devuélvela.

3.-El “bien hacer”: Haz las cosas bien, si vas a nadar hazlo bien, y si vas a estudiar hazlo bien. Las gentes que son un “bien ser” y da a la familia y a su escuela mas de lo que recibieron, llegaran al tercer paso: el “el bien estar”, y quieres siguen estos tres paso en este orden, tarde o temprano llegaran a lograr un “bien tener”.

4.-Actitud ante la naturaleza: En cada acto importante de la vida, planta un árbol: cuando se casen planten un árbol, cuando nazca un hijo planta un árbol, cuando entres a la primaria planta un árbol, antes de cualquier evento realmente importante, planten un árbol, si cada personas plantara un árbol en cada momento importante de su vida, México sería otro.

5.-La Religión. Las religiones mexicanas por lo regular te inculcan que hay que ir a pedir a los templos , en Japón el Sintoísmo te inculca que hay que ir a los templos a ofrecer, por eso los sindicatos mexicanos presentan pliego de peticiones y los sindicatos japoneses presentan pliego de ofrecimientos, pequeña pero gran diferencia.

E eu que achava de que leite de soja era o auge da modernidade dos leites? Sim, lembro de tomar o de vaca integral tipo A quando pequena e de ouvir histórias de que se for tirado na hora e misturado com pinga é ótimo pra gripe, de que leite de cabra cura até defunto e que Muppy de saquinho (que eu comprava na feira da liberdade - até hoje tomo) fazia super bem.

Mas nesses tempos me falaram que Ades e afins não prestam pra nada e que são pura química. Sinceramente? Desconfio. Amo Yakult e acredito fielmente no poder dos lactobacilos vivos e que a gente só pode tomar um por dia senão faz mal, hahaha! Também descobri que existe leite de arroz, de castanha (que dizem ser uma ótima fonte de cálcio) e de… Milho. Não preciso nem comentar que o preço do litro dessas iguarias fica na casa dos R$ 15,00, né? Ou seja, CARO.

Sei lá, isso é weirdo demais pro meu mundo de leite de caixinha desnatado com gosto de água e do clássico toddynho gelado. Sim, sou uma outsider totalmente demodê no mundo dos naturebas. Assumida.

In an effort to try to make myself a little healthier.. and to balance out my digestive tract a little more.. I have decided to start taking Yakult.

It’s been this asian thing for years.. and had recently made it into the mainstream US market a few years ago.. it’s a Lactobacillus bacteria species that is supposed to promote a more balanced digestive system.. and possibly build a stronger immune system.

Considering the fact that I have gotten sick for the past few months in a row.. this should be a good thing.

I took my first drink of this stuff yesterday and I have to admit that it is pretty good.  I had been warned that it tastes sour and kind of icky.  It’s got the tartness.. but within the tartness is a sweet candy-like appeal.  I will not feel like it’s a “medicine” but I will enjoy it for the “yogurt” type drink that it is..

I’ve also had this dream of running/jogging in a 5K marathon.  My masters degree program is currently hindering the actual progress of this dream.. but I had found a great training schedule on www.coolrunning.com. 

I’ts a training schedule that gets you from couch to 5K in 9 weeks.  The training sessions are 20-30 minutes a day, 3 days a week.  It looks fairly simple and it’s a gradual progression which makes me feel like I can actually accomplish this.. I just really need the time.. and the discipline.

One of these months I a definitely going to tackle it.  I may not get to do a 5K this year.. but I know one of these years.. I definitely will..

Recently I noticed plants and (fake) flowers in Tokyo Metro men’s rooms. Who puts them there? Janitors? Passengers? Station agents? I enjoy how an anonymous person has used low-cost greenery to improve these pedestrian spaces.
