Today we’re going to have a close look at Yamato’s “Macross Display Stand for Valk

Today we’re going to have a close look at Yamato’s “Macross Display Stand for Valkyrie.” These stands were originally made for the 1/48 scale valkyries, but they work just as well for the second generation 1/60 scale valkyries. There are three versions: a black one, a silver one, and a gray one. I have only the black and silver ones.

Box for black display stand

Box for silver display stand

Each stand also comes with a set of connectors. The black stand comes with gray connectors, and the silver stand comes with white connectors. However, if you have the newer 1/60 second generation valkyries, you won’t need the connectors because the second generation 1/60 scale valkyries already come with the connectors.

Here’s a side-by-side view of both stands:

Silver and black display stands side by side

Each stand consists of three parts: the base, the main support arm, and four smaller support arms. The four smaller support arms, which are screwed together in one piece, are for displaying valkyries in fighter mode. For Gerwalk and Battloid modes, you remove these smaller support arms.

Connector for the four smaller support arms

The top of the support arm is where you drop in the connector on your valkyrie.

Top of display stand arm, with hole for valkyrie connector

Here’s the gray connector that comes with the 1/60 VF-1J Mass Production TV Type:

Connector for VF-1J Mass Production TV Type (fighter and gerwalk modes)

The bottom of this connector fits into the top of the display stand arm, and is held by gravity:

Valkyrie connected to the display stand arm

At the very beginning of Macross the movie, we see some valkyries launch from a similar support arm. See the black and yellow stripes?

The display stand has several points of articulation:

With all these articulation points, you can put your valkyries in some very striking poses. All the joints are very clicky and hold a particular position well.

Here’s the bottom of the base!

Bottom view of display stand base

And here’s a top view of the base:

Top view of display stand base

Search for “Macross display stand” on Google, and you’ll get some product matches. From Japan Toys, http://www.japan-toys.com/cgi-bin/us-goods.cgi?id=CHO-408 it seems Yamato released another gray version with the black and yellow stripes!

One final note: the silver display stand feels lighter than the black one, and I think it has thinner plastic. As a result, the black stand feels more durable. Also, when inserting the arm into the base for the silver display stand, I sometimes see some paint falling out of the bottom.

In the Macross: Do You Remember Love? movie, we get a 3-second glimpse of a rather strange veritech fighter, starting at 12 minutes and 35 seconds.

"The enemy ship is approaching at a course of one-oh-seven."

Yes! It’s the VE-1 Elint Seeker (Elint = Electronic Signals Intelligence). Yamato finally re-released the VE-1 in the second 1/60 generation of veritechs, and she’s a beauty!

Here’s a view from the side:

Side View of VE-1

And here’s a view from the back of the fighter:

VE-1 Rear View

Eye-Catching Box and Great Packaging!

The VE-1 comes in a large box, but it doesn’t have the cover flap like a lot of other Yamato veritechs!

The box has the same thickness as the other VF-1S/J’s that come with Super Parts, but is thinner than the normal VF-1A box.

The VE-1 comes in two plastic trays, one that holds the fighter and accessories, and a second tray that holds the armor and the radar dome.

Of course, there’s an instruction manual (20 pages, with black-and-white pictures of a VE-1 with an incomplete paint scheme) and a sticker sheet. The only stickers I applied were the eye-looking ones on the sides of the boosters.

VE-1 Manual and Sticker Sheet

The Neat Stuff about the VE-1

The mold looks very similar to the VT-1 Super Ostrich: the VE-1 has a similar backpack (tail fins do not fold over each other, but instead, the entire backpack just flips over), the cockpit is a two-person-seater, and the boosters are short and stubby.

Here’s a closeup of the two pilot figures:

Now here are some really neat items on the VE-1.

Arm-mounted communications relay co-antennae equipped NR-SL-E3

The Squid-like Head

Double red-tipped wingtip

Arm-mounted high-frequency/very-high-frequency/very-low frequency antennae equipped NR-SR-E3

Booster-mounted side surveillance radar system

Be Careful with Handling!

The VE-1 is quite bulky with all these neat accessories. Make sure you’re careful handling the VE-1 because the right-arm-mounted antennae is a piece of thin plastic, and the left-arm-mounted communications relay co-antennae has four little plastic rods sticking out on each end, and on the bottom, there are two thin, long plastic rods. Finally, because the relay co-antennae on the left arm hangs downward, I think you really need a Macross display stand to prop the VE-1 up.

Since the VE-1 in the Macross movie is in fighter mode, I’m leaving mine in fighter mode. If you’d like to see what the VE-1 looks like in Gerwalk and Battloid mode, check it out at Hobby Link Japan: http://www.hlj.com/product/YMT00127

For more information on the VE-1’s equipment, see the Macross Mecha Manual.

Today I’m doing something special. I have a treat for all you Macross fans out there. I’

Today I’m doing something special. I have a treat for all you Macross fans out there. I’m posting pics and doing a review of the latest incarnation of the VF-11B from Yamato, this time in all its 1/60 scale glory. Yeah I know, not a Transformer, but I figure it is still a transforming robot so close enough. Plus he’s just too cool for me to not show it off.

I bought this last week from an ebay seller. I wasn’t home when they delivered it, so yesterday I had to go pick this up in person at the post office. This was about $190 shipped, which is slightly less than what most dealers ask for. This was formerly in the $220 to $230 range. The recent price drop from some dealers could be due to the 11C coming out soon, or possibly from the lack of love from fans because this model is often seen as the “fodder” in both Macross Plus and Macross 7. Whatever the case, the VF-11 has always been one of my personal favorites among the Macross fighters, perhaps because that early sequence in Macross Plus where Isamu Dyson kicked some serious rouge Zentradi ass was so memorable. But enough talking, on to the pics and the review.

I’ll start off with some pics of the box. Nothing too special here. This is the usual type of box that all Yamatos come in, with the flip up lid.

Jet Mode

The unit comes packaged in this mode. This is perhaps the most solid of the 3 molds.

I really like how this fighter looks. I think this mold has captured the shape of the 11 from the show perfectly, especially when compared to the 1/72 scale.

At first glance it actually looks like the 1/60 has less detail than the 1/72, but upon closer inspection, you will notice that’s not really the case. The detail on the 1/60 is more subtle when compared to the 1/72, but it is there. The lines the the 1/60 are not colored a dark line like the 1/72, and I think it looks better that way. In fact, the more I look at these, I more I feel as if the 1/60 is the real fighter and the 1/72 is the toy. The shape of the 1/60 is by far more show accurate, in my opinion. The shield in this mode stays on nicely on the 1/60, unlike the 1/72 where it’s constantly falling off. The gun pod is supported on the bottom by placing the gun handle between the arms, much like how the VF-1 Yamatos do it. To do this you have to position the gun and the arms just right, and it can be a little tricky to do. The fast packs also stay on tight, but not to the point where removing them would be difficult. The landing gears have rubber tires which is a really nice touch, though it is kinda hard to get them out. The cockpit can be opened and a pilot figure (probably Isamu) is included to be placed in there. Wings are retractable. Overall, all the pieces in jet mode stick together well and feels as if this is really one cohesive unit.

The above is a pic of the 11B next to ROTF Optimus to give you some idea of his size. It’s definitely smaller than the other 1/60 Macross Plus fighters, like the YF-19 and YF-21, but slightly larger than the 1/60 VF-1. If these scales are accurate, then we can infer that the 11 is one of the smaller fighters in the Macross Universe.

Gerwalk Mode

The Gerwalk is really one of the strengths of this unit. As the pic shows, this mold captured the look of the Gerwalk really well. In fact, this might be the best representation of the Gerwalk I have seen in any of the Macross fighters, whether its Yamato, Bandai, Toynami, or someone else.

Often times, the toy representation of the Gerwalk has legs that don’t quite translate to how the unit looks in the show. There are no such issues here. In the pics above you can see that the legs can be articulated nicely to match the Gerwalk’s birdlike appearance. The only time the Gerwalk has looked this good are on non-transforming models of the Gerwalk. I should point out that you kinda have to position the legs just right to get it in this stance, otherwise he either falls forward, or the jet body is positioned too flat. But its not too hard to do and there’s enough articulation in the legs, knee, and feet to position it however you wish. The arms also have enough articulation to for some good poses.

The transformation from jet to Gerwalk is fairly standard for the post part, but I do want to point out two things. First, the arm mechanism on this unit is much better than the 1/72. The way is swings out is much more robust, and there are grooves in the mechanics that let you know when you’ve gotten it positioned all the way. Second, the way that the rear wing module stays flat with the main jet body is much improved. The rear wing modules would never fall flat, because there is an insertion piece extending from these modules into the main body that locks it into place. This is done as part of the transformation. You can tell they really put a lot of thought into this when they designed this piece.

Battloid Mode

The Battloid is probably the weakest of the 3 modes in my opinion, but it is still a significant improvement over the previous attempts of the VF-11. The first thing I want to point out is how the cockpit shield comes down during transformation to the Battloid.

This shield is hidden behind the cockpit in the main body in the other modes. When it transforms to Battloid, the main cockpit goes under, and the shield slides forward. How cool is that?! I have never seen this on any other Valkyrie! Most of the time you just put this extra shield on, but this mechanism takes it to a whole new level.

The rest of the transformation is pretty standard. Nothing too revolutionary. Here are more pics of the Battloid.

As I’ve said already, this version looks much better and is not so skinny. The arms are still a little skinny in my opinion, but good enough. Compared to some other Valkyries, the articulation in the arms and legs are more limited, but I think there is enough here that you can still get some decent poses if that’s your thing. Getting the unit to stand up straight in this mode is a bit challenging. You kinda have to balance it just right. But I’ve had this for less than 24 hours so maybe I’ll find some trick to it later. The head does swivel 360 degrees, but does not go up and down. I kinda wish it did.

I have some other thoughts that I’ll just throw out in bullet points:

Getting the gun into either hand can be tricky. There is a tab on the inside palm of the hand that sticks into a slot on the gun handle, then you just position the thumb and fingers over the handle, but I can’t seem to get it to work that well. Maybe its because the thumb and fingers (and also my own fingers) are getting in the way.

The fast pack can be attached or detached in all 3 modes. The leg parts are attached purely thru magnets like many of the other Yamatos. Very cool

The knife on the gunpod swings out just like the 1/72. However this knife does look bigger and more menacing. I wish they did some kind of spring pop-out mechanism so it would be show accurate, but this is good enough.

I don’t know what is the original MSRP for this, but it was at least $200+. The 11 is smaller than other 1/60s (except for the VF-1) and there are no diecast parts at all (the whole thing feels quite light), so at $200+ I don’t think this is good value. I think it should have been around $150.

Overall, I’m very happy with the 1/60 VF-11B. This is the best transforming version of this fighter that has ever been made. If you are anything of a Macross fan, you owe it to yourself to get this. As I’ve said already, I think the price tag is a little high. I’m not gonna say this is worth every penny that I paid, but I will say that I don’t regret paying what I paid. My final verdict is that this is very highly recommended, and if you are a Macross fan and you got cash to spare, go for it!

That’s all for now. Transform and Roll Out!

Yamato has a line of smaller scale but more highly articulated robot action figures called “GN-U Dou”, “GN-U” meaning “brave band of warriors” and “Dou” meaning “movement”. Whereas Kaiyodo’s Revoltech line of highly articulated robots are designed with ball joints, Yamato’s GN-U Dou robots have hinge joints held together with a metal pin:

Kaiyodo's Revoltech ball joint

These pictures are close-ups of the elbow joints from the Kaiyodo Revoltech VF-1J and the Yamato GN-U Dou VF-1J.

Revoltech VF-1J on the left, Yamato GN-U Dou VF-1J on the right

In my opinion, the proportional sizes of parts on the Yamato look better than those of the Revoltech. The Revoltech’s parts look a little squished. In the picture above, notice that the Revoltech VF-1J has a smooth texture and pudgy parts from what looks like a thick coat of paint. I wonder if this thick coat of paint or PVC is what causes the Revoltech to have a nasty odor? In contrast, the Yamato VF-1J has no odor.

The Revoltech is slightly shorter than the Yamato in overall height. In addition, the Revoltech’s gunpod also looks a little short, whereas the Yamato’s gunpod looks slightly long.

Gunpod comparison

The backpack is another comparison point.

Revoltech VF-1J on left, Yamato VF-1J on the right. The Revoltech's backpack looks too squarish.

Finally, let’s put these two VF-1J’s next to the Yamato 1/60 Macross VF-1J with Super Parts.

Left to right: Revoltech VF-1J, Yamato 1/60 VF-1J, Yamato GN-U Dou VF-1J

In closing, although the Revoltech VF-1J comes with Super parts, its proportions and odor make it, in my opinion, less desirable than the Yamato GN-U Dou VF-1J. What do you think?

Putting a vanilla Yamato veritech on the gray display stand is fine, but when I put a veritech with Super Parts on the stand, the support arm sometimes bends under the weight. Since the black display stand with the matte finish offers more friction in the support arm joints, it holds heavier veritechs much better. I recommend that you get the black display stand instead of the gray one, unless you really, really want the black and yellow stripes, and the color of the stand to match the color of the connectors!

Kisame's gonna kill you and make you into a Snuggie...

You have GOT to be kidding me! Are you telling me Masashi Kishimoto took an entire week off from the manga just to return with THIS!? First of all he completely forgoes the much-anticipated Kisame vs Killerbee fight (opting instead for a paltry, unsatisfying teaser on the first page wherein Kisame raises his sword to a BEAR!). Immediately following that disappointment is a quick check in with everyone’s favourite runaway Hokage, Danzou. Zetsu corpses abound as the Konoha cowards think of the best manner in which to deal with their Mist nin pursuer (who, incidentally, seems to get his hair cut at the same place Kisame does). Our valiant Kirigakure warrior, while hot on their trail, falls victim to one of Danzou’s escort’s traps in a matter of seconds however and is easily neutralized.

Is it just me, or does Torune remind you of Bato from GitS? O_O

lol ima take ur body now kay? :3

At this point I simply had to ask myself just WHAT THE HELL did he have the Byakugan for anyway!? Don’t worry about all the Main and Branch family Curse Seal stuff Hyuga clan, apparently people are just far too STUPID to use your eyes properly anyway! >:-O. So now that that loose plot thread has been tied up, the manga then cuts abruptly to the Hokage conference where they spend a couple of pages trying to decide on a leader for the ‘New World shinobi Alliance’, ultimately settling on the Zetsu-choking, Hole-in-wall punching, Super Saiyan transforming, wrestling move doing, Sasuke-owning Raikage because he’s the only man badass enough to lead a clip that rolls that deep. Of course who really wants to say ‘no’ to a man willing to cut off his own arm just to win a fight? I don’t want to get a Raiger Bomb, do you!? THEN ELECT THAT MOTHERF*CKA!!! Fitting indeed that a black man should lead the ‘NW(s)A’ desho?

Just like in Pokemon, in the Ninja world Rock is quite resistant to Lightning

Ten pages in-though really nine and a half but hey who’s counting….BESIDES EVERY FLICKING FAN WONDERING JUST WHAT THE HELL IS SUPPOSED TO FILL UP THE REMAINING PAGES!!-and we get right to the meat and potatoes of this week’s manga. This is what Kishimoto’s extra 7-day hiatus was all about. This is what he needed time off to get brewing in that magical little plot pot of his. This is what the fans waited an entire agonizing manga-less week to see!!!!………

You see the pink one? That's the plot slowly being stragled to death -_-...

That’s right, though the title of this week’s update should have totally given it away (to be quite honest I didn’t read it, so you can imagine my surprise), Sakura organized an entire team of Konoha shinobi to enter into the harsh territory of the land of Iron to tell Naruto that she “loves (him)” -_-…….

Sakura uses "Moe no jutsu"!!!

Epic facepalm of heartbreak!

Lol, Kakashi's like 'Stand back Yamato, there are dangerous forces at work here....'

Sakura has a history of rabid fangirlism that negates just about everything she just said -_-

If the whole 'touching moment in the snow' thing seems familiar it's because it's been done A BAJILLION times in Kanon, Clannad, Little Busters and just about every single romantic visual novel in existence >:-0

Seriously!!?? You know, when she first mentioned having to talk to Naruto about two weeks back I was kind of expecting the exact opposite. I was hoping for a tearful Sakura telling Naruto how terrible she was for making suffer so much pain and emotional torment for an unrequited love. How selfish she was to make him promise to retrieve the object of her affections, his rival, for her because she herself was too weak. I thought she would fall to her knees and beg forgiveness for the senseless act of placing the burden of protecting the friendship of team 7 squarely on his shoulders. Heck, I was expecting her to just plain get a boot to the head for no apparent reason; that would have been fine with me. But no, she comes with this bogus “confession” straight out of the blue in a feeble attempt to get Naruto off of his path to destruction. Now, I will say that I understand her reasons for doing what she did, surely her heart was in the right place but she failed to understand that asking Naruto to “just forget about that promise (they) made” is tantamount to asking him to deny his very beliefs! His credo! His Ninja Way! There is no way an obvious lie like that is going to deter Naruto from his Nindo, added to the fact that he genuinely cared about Sasuke’s well being even before the issue of bringing him back for Sakura’s sake even became an issue. From the minute I saw those words I realized two things about the current state of the Naruto manga: 1) Sakura obviously has a very clear understanding of the gravity of the current situation and is willing to do what she can to mitigate it by ANY means necessary. 2) Confessions of love in this series hold absolutely no weight whatsoever! That’s the only way Hinata’s long overdue revealing of her feelings can be quelled, suppressed and ignored with such swiftness that one wonders if it ever even happened in the first place! That’s also the only way Kishimoto can get away with using such an important storytelling trope as a decoy; a means of subterfuge! Just another weapon in the ninja arsenal it seems -_-…

Serious Naruto is serious!

Whoo! I almost swooned there for a minute. Is this really the same guy who invented Sexy no Jutsu?

Whether or not Sakura was sincerely lying to herself about her inexplicable feelings for Sasuke or she was just telling a bold faced lie, nobody was having it (heck even Yamato knew something was fishy about it and he’s only been a part of the team since the Time Skip!). I mean, Naruto isn’t the sharpest kunai in the pouch, but even HE can’t be expected to swallow that much tripe. I love the fact that from the very first moment you see his face in the manga his expression transforms subtly from one of mild shock and disbelief to one of calm, yet focused seriousness and stoic understanding. He knows what’s going on; with himself, with Sakura, with the very state of their entire convoluted relationship. He knows, and he’s ready to deal with whatever comes…

P.S. THIS IS WHAT I EXPECT TO HAPPEN WHEN NARUTO GETS BACK TO KONOHA KISHIMOTO!!! PAY CLOSE ATTENTION!!!

Naruto-kun, you never gave me an answer....

All right, so I caved in and bought a gray Macross display stand! The mold is the same as the black and silver versions, but this gray stand is more similar to the black stand, in regards to weight and overall feel. And it has the yellow and black stripes!

Box for gray display stand on the left, black display stand box on the right

Rear view of boxes for gray display stand (left) and black display stand (right)

The major difference between the gray and black stands is that the gray one has a glossy finish, whereas the black one has a matte finish. As a result, the gray stand looks shinier, and it’s also easier to detach and re-attach the four support arms.

Top views of the display stand bases

Now here’s a bottom view of the bases. Note that the “filler” base is the same plastic, and this filler gives the base the majority of its weight.

Bottom view of gray stand base (left) and black stand base (right)

Here’s how the stands look with the arms inserted into the bases:

Gray and black display stands, arms attached to bases

See the little square peg in the lower right-hand corner of the base? You can remove the four support arms and attach them to the peg:

Gray and black display stands, four support arms detached

The same shade of gray is used for the connectors to the valkyries (please see previous post).

I know I could’ve painted over the gray and white stripes on the black display stand, but oh well!
