For me, 35mm film IS the real art, the real expression that captures the real moment. Before, taking pictures was almost like an event, first you had to buy the film roll. In consequence, you had to think: Ok, I’m going to a BBQ, a Bar-Mitzvah, a Wedding, etc. Therefore, I need the proper roll. But wait, where is it going to be? Inside?, Outside?, low light?, sunlight?, kino?, 3400K or 5600K?…
Once you called your family or friends and bothered them about all this info that you needed in order to capture the best of it, you still wondering about “The Place”, (because if you are as picky as me, you want to know what color would predominate in the event). I.E.: Fuji gives more vivid to the color green, Kodak in the meantime it’s better for faces, and so on with the rest of the rolls. After knowing what ASA film I should bought, I drove to the store. Yes, you had to drive, not erase your SD card and put it back into the camera. All this meant to get dressed, use gas from my car or buy a subway ticket, spend time talking with others, open my pursed or wallet, take money out, wait for the cashier to give me the receipt, pay the parking lot or buy another subway ticket, spend more gas and finally, arrive at home. After this adventure (extinguished for some human beings),  I went with a smile to my room, opened up the camera, read again the instructions -because I used to forgot things- pulled out some film so I could attach it to those little bumps, they are very small. Once that clicked, I could close the camera and voila! I had complete that task! Yai!!!. For my old school readers… YES, I’m not even gonna go over the older 35mm camera in which you had to rewind the film in order to use it, because if it wasn’t Properly rewinded, you had to go to a dark room to open the camera and pray to your G-ds that you didn’t messed up the film, because if you did… you just had to repeat everything I just told, ALL OVER AGAIN.
Finally, I had my camera and everything ready and let’s say I was going to a barbecue (BBQ’S in Venezuela are different, we cook T-Bones, potatoes, corns, onions, chicken, yuca, punta trasera, beefsteaks, etc. Anything but hamburgers). So, we spend most of our day in the BBQ. Let’s say that the whole family arrived, we were drinking Pepsi or Coca-cola (whoever wants to sponsor my blog) and I realized it’s a good time to take out my camera and start taking pictures. I usually told my mom (who is the master chef in my families BBQ’S): Hey smile!. She smiles in the middle of the BBQ with the smoke all over, then I took pictures of my brothers, cousins, uncles, friends, little babies that are smiling UNTIL I pressed to take the photo! In that instant they started crying, I tried to take another one, and he or she continued to cry, then mother raised the baby and and the baby smiles….But again when I taked the picture, he or she cries or bites the mother or simple puke while in my mind I tought: ha, ha, ha, I’m spending so many pictures on this baby #Fail #agh… This was the moment that toughed me “smile and wave” trick. I started to smile, wave and moved away from chaos.
After 6 hours spending “quality” time with my family I went back to my room and took out all the film rolls from the BBQ, brought them to the store an finally get my prints.
When I started to take pictures, you had to wait like 2 or 3 days to get the prints. But, guess what! technology evolves and just before the digital camera we only had to wait… only… 30 minutes!!! Wasn’t that AWESOME! in 30 minutes I could hold in my hands a bunch of pictures, WOW! After that I thought next year we could be buying flying cars. But, I’m still waiting for that. Anyway, return to the store after waiting, not sleeping and remembering all the great pictures I took. Finally the wait is over, I went to pick up the 3 rolls I left with a big smile on my face, gave my receipt and the guy in the store said: oh Hi Joyce, I loved the pictures, there’s only 1 bad news, the 24 pictures roll wasn’t properly load, so the pictures are all black- Gulp! ——-  What! ——- I took another big GULP, told to myself: DO NOT cry and finally respond…Ohhhh really? did you try other way to develop it? blah, blah, blah. It was messed up.
Well I grab the good ones, opened the envelope right there in the store, and a miracle has happened! I was looking the pictures, in paper, with colors and not touching them. (Yes, I also was a freak about people leaving their fingerprints in my pictures. That is a big No, No.) And with a proudly face of ruining a 24 film roll… I pick up the bag of the pictures, my pursed and start to smile, walk and wave out of the store…

Today, I’m posting some pictures I took and developed myself in Orlando, Florida. I did a motion blur with the development machine, not with Photoshop

…That Was just a little short story about the awesomeness of shooting in a 35mm Camera!
