Last night turned out to be an especially lucrative night in gold-panning for talent. In a couple hours I managed to add an hour and half of music to my iTunes and spend some cash on some well-deserving artists. This is putting my DEFTJAMS playlist up past the 12 hour mark. At 24 four hours, I will release the whole thing as one 24 hour long mix for download on here.

D/A/D would make Jan Hammer jealous. Comprised of a single Northwestern University student, D/A/D’s “Super Motives” is pulled straight out of Miami Vice. Cheesy? A little. Dated? Certainly. The weather quickly turned cold and we bypassed normally enjoyable fall weather. As a kid I pictured Indian Summer as a wooden canoe on a lake surrounded by fall foliage. This photo seems to capture that essence I suppose. For me it’s Titanic (“I’m the king of the world!”), meets my dog riding up front.

I’ve rekindled my seasonal love for the Brazilian Girls by digging into their older albums, and this tape’s featured track comes from their self-titled debut:

Lyrics are normally lost on me, but on “Don’t Stop” Sabina Sciubba sings plainly about sex in the least vulgar and most carefree way. They are the kind of lyrics that are so straightforward they look like a joke written down. Songs about doin’ it usually look that way on paper though, this one just does it better than most, with the right amount of sincerity and aplomb.

Help, I’m Alive (Twelves Remix) by Metric, SO good, I’ve had this song for quite a while, but I never really sat down and listened to it. Classic Twelves.

Take on Me (Twelves Remix) by A-Ha, just incredible. What a great remix of this song, would recommend playing for any set with this kind of happy/feel good atmosphere. This song would just destroy a party in college. People love what they know.

Drugs in My Body (Twelves Remix) by The Twelves, This was actually the song which started getting me into the Twelves. My friend Tony gave me this even before their boyfriend remix. Though I do admit it’s by no means my favorite, it holds a sentimental value so I though I’d put it up.

GREAT to play at any party:
Boys (The Twelves Remix) by M.I.A., this should be evident why this would be a good song to play at a party.

Reckoner (The Twelves Remix) by Radiohead, I don’t normally approve of most Radiohead remixes, but this one is so fantastic. Really keeps the idea of the original, just makes it a little dancier.

PZK, c’est la musique qui transforme vos oreilles en lotissement pavillonnaire. Le service Musique de GQ phosphore ces jours-ci sur l’étonnant succès de « Les Filles adorent », de ce collectif composé de cinq amis de 17 à 20 ans.

C’est la grande revanche de la middle class des pavillons de banlieues. Après le hip-hop ou l’indie pop, baptisons cette tendance la « Pavtar Pop » (pavillon en argot des cités).

Comme « Parle à ma main » de Fatal Bazooka (Michael Youn) et Yelle, dans un genre plus parodique.

I don’t listen to  dance music much, though I do enjoy them sometimes. But I’m not talking about those mainstream ones that radio stations seem to play all the time (cough, BLACK EYED PEAS, cough). Here are some songs that’ll make you get up and dance – or at least, you’ll want to.

1) Robot High School – My Robot Friend

I wasn’t a fan of this song at first, but after having a friend play it to me multiple times, I’ve grown to love it. It’s a electronic/techno mix, with weird but amusing lyrics that’ll get stuck in your head.

Featured Lyrics: I memorized the rules and learned to behave,
But when I went to school I forgot, forgot,
So they put me in a special classroom,
Where everybody is a robot, robot.

2) Might Like You Better – Amanda Blank

This isn’t the only incredibly catchy song Amanda Blank has. My other personal favourites are Shame On Me, Make It Take It and Leaving You Behind (feat. Lykke Li). Her songs are upbeat, fun, and great to dance to.

3) Je veux te voir – Yelle

omgomgomgomgomg I love Yelle. Her music is similar to MIA’s, or Justice’s. The lyrics to this song, especially, are hilarious – the link I provided for you has English translations, so don’t worry. This is one of my favourite songs from her, and if I didn’t read the English subtitles I swear I would have thought she was just an ordinary, sweet French girl. Tell me you haven’t fallen in love with her after watching this video.

4) If You Falling Right Down with Poker Face

Mashup of songs from Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Space Cowboy and Flo Rida, from Youtube user MysteriousNight. I know, I know – I said I wasn’t going to use mainstream music, but this is all four in one! And I don’t think this gets played on radio stations, do you?
This mashup is one of the best I’ve heard, I just had to put it on the list.

5) Get U Home (Travis Barker Remix) - Shwayze ft. Cisco Adler

Shwayze’s music is way better than half the ’songs’ that steal all the top spots in charts – so why don’t people listen to them more? This is one of their more energetic songs and although the original is just as good as the remix, this version is a lot more likely to get the party mood going.

6) Bulletproof – La Roux

I absolutely adore La Roux – her songs always make me forget whatever problems I may have at the moment. Though my favourite from her is still I’m Not Your Toy, I felt that Bulletproof was more appropriate for parties and dancing to. Not a huge fan of the video at the moment, but the song is well worth it.

Photography can immediately conjure a mood–and sometimes a virtual soundtrack. But how do you translate that from a catalog to reality in store locations?

Our criteria for choosing music is for listeners to feel the vibe of CB2 so we play unexpected set lists. From ‘Kraftwerk’ the German pioneers of electronic music of the late 70s, to ‘Goldfrapp’ of the European ultra-hip dance pop genre, with a little ‘Yelle’ in between.

Sometimes we get inspiration from specific products. Right now there are several furniture pieces that take classic, mid-century design elements and update them for a fresh modern feel, so it was natural to bring in music to compliment the look.

‘The Bird and the Bee’ are perfect–a swank duo from California that mix loungy 60’s instrumentals, cheeky lyrics, and of the moment Euro-disco beats.

We also like to bring in music that reflects our sense of humor. We love seeing a customer’s reaction when an obscure, underground disco track comes on, or a long forgotten 80s tune.

It’s great to see people move to the beat or lounge on a sectional, and we’re always looking for something fresh–so what’s CB2 on your ipod?
