Yello – The_Expert

Yello is one of my favorite bands (if you can call them a band), and this is a piece I adore. It’s from their album “Baby”, and it’s called Sweet Thunder. It’s really a sweet thunder, isn’t it?

The album was released in 1991  under the label Mercury. An early cut of the album was used as the incidental soundtrack for the film The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. Unfortunately, even though Yello were full of promises from their beginning, the later albums they produced disappointing their fans. The same stands for this album, “Baby”, which is accused of having no fresh ideas, no character, no nothing, except of few good tracks. One of them is the one you hear, “Sweet thunder”.

I wonder, what went wrong with Yello? They were for sure far ahead of their era, but then just didn’t produce any new ideas in their later albums.

This is one of my favorite pieces of Yello. Yello is a Swiss electronica band consisting of Dieter Meier and Boris Blank. They are probably best known for their singles “The Race” and “Oh Yeah“, which feature a mix of electronic music and manipulated vocals, as does most of their music.

The band was originally formed by Boris Blank (keyboards, sampling, percussion, backing vocals) and Carlos Perón (tapes) in the late 1970s. Dieter Meier (vocals, lyrics), a millionaire industrialist and gambler, was brought in when the two founders realised that they needed a singer. The new band name Yello was chosen as a pun based on a statement made by Dieter Meier: “a yelled Hello”. Meier and Blank’s first release was the 1979 single called “I.T. Splash”. The LP Solid Pleasure, featuring the hit dance single “Bostich”, was released in November 1980.

In 1983 Yello received substantial media attention with the release of “I Love You” and “Lost Again”. Perón left the band in 1983 to start a solo career. With their 1983 album You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess, the band began a working relationship with Ernst Gamper, whose “corner cut” logo would represent them for three albums, and who would design covers for the group beyond the demise of this logo.

The music is composed by Boris Blank, who considers himself a perfectionist. When the tracks are mostly finished, Dieter Meier adds the vocal parts when fitting.

Meier is also a filmmaker, having written and directed the films Jetzt und Alles and Lightmaker as well as most of Yello’s music videos. Additionally, Meier produces his own wine on his ranch.

FLAMING LIPS – She Don’t Use Jelly / Turn It On (Warner Brothers 18131 1994)
Simple and surreal, “She Don’t Use Jelly” was Coyne and cos first singalong song which, unlike many, never seems to pall with repeated listenings. It’s just gleefully absurd, simple fun.

POP GROUP – She Is Beyond Good and Evil / 3.38 (Radar 29 1979)
Perhaps the Pop Group’s most accessible song, this is still evil sounding Faustian funk that lies somewhere between Chic and free jazz. They were a band whose tension between deep dub-funk and stellar jazz was stretched to breaking point, and topped with the borderline madness of Mark Stewart’s paranoid vocals, created a distopian soundtrack to societal, political and personal breakdown. The tension that drove them inevitably destroyed them as the group was pulled in too many conflicting directions, but their small ouevre is a truly great legacy.

PJ HARVEY – Sheela-na-gig / Joe / Hair (Too Pure 8 1992)
Part Pixies part riot girl, Polly Harvey stripped out the fat and fancy from her music, but still sounded a world away from the basic rock template. She infuriated and thrilled people in equal measure for her steadfast refusal to be labelled, or dragged into ’scenes’, and still does. Her secret is a paradoxical combination of self-doubt and self-confidence that leaves her restless and continually inventive, but at the same time, never capriciously flitting from style to style.

RAMONES – Sheena Is a Punk Rocker / Commando / I Don’t Care (Sire 746 1977)
They sounded dumb but were never stupid. The first three albums fire off crackers like this every couple of minutes without ever sounding weary. That they ultimately became a cliché was inevitable. They either progressed and lost the raw simplicity, or stayed the same and became a self-parody.

HALL & OATES – She’s Gone / I’m Just a Kid (Atlantic 3332 1974)
In the eighties they became pop giants, but their music became plastic and soulless. In the seventies they couldn’t get arrested, but came out with some amazing Philly soul-drenched pop. “She’s Gone” is a powerhouse of impassioned vocal interplay.

YELLO – She’s Got a Gun / The Evening’s Young (Do It 18 1982)
While a lot of Yello’s early music was fairly brash, electro-influenced synth pop, my favourite side to the duo was always the atmospheric noir-ish stories relayed in tracks like “Lost Again” and this one. Dieter Meyer’s image fits the world of darkened railway stations, femmes fatales with guns and the fading decadence of a Europe living under the burden of its own catastrophic history.

HOUSE OF LOVE – Shine On / Love / Flow (Creation 43 1987)
About as good as indie guitar music gets. The House of Love’s first single was emotional, exciting, crisp and concise. It sold diddly squat, despite being on a fashionable label. Some things are just unfathomable. Over the last two decades, they’re a band I’ve introduced to people more than any other I think, and the reaction is always glowing. And I’ve met other people who rate the band’s short tenure at Creation as highly as I do.

ROBERT WYATT – Shipbuilding / Memories of You (Rough Trade 115 1982)
Elvis Costello’s brilliant response to the Falklands War isn’t a angry polemic, but a confused reflection of a character whose livelihood has been secured by it, and feels guilty about that fact. I have no problem with Costello as a singer, but he has a rather sarcastic tone that really can’t carry off the emotional conflicts of the song. Robert Wyatt, however, has the right mixture of pathos, vulnerability and deep unease to convey it perfectly. A masterpiece.

BOYS NEXT DOOR – Shivers / Dive Position (Mushroom 7492 1979)
Before they discovered their true mettle as the Birthday Party, the band’s previous incarnation peddled a kind of jerky, spiky pop. This Rowland Howard song sounded nothing like either. It’s a brooding ballad that oddly has far more in common with some of Nick Cave’s later work even though it wasn’t his song. It’s appearance in the film Dogs in Space is a perfect cinematic moment.

MIRACLES – Shop Around / Who’s Loving You (Tamla 54030 1960)
Along with Barrett Strong’s “Money”, “Shop Around” is one of the two major hits of Motown’s first year that has one foot in doo wop and rock ‘n’ roll, and the other in the future, world-dominating Motown sound.

MAGAZINE – Shot By Both Sides / My Mind Ain’t So Open (Virgin 200 1978)
With a riff so good that former Buzzcocks partners Howard Devoto and Pete Shelley both used it (see “Lipstick” by the Buzzcocks), “Shot By Both Sides” introduced Magazine with a bang. It was a winning combination punk’s excitement and sharpness and the more expansive, almost prog, sound of bands like Roxy Music.

JUNIOR WALKER & THE ALL STARS – Shotgun / Hot Cha (Soul 35008 1965)
Motown anomalies in that they owed as much to Booker T & the MGs and James Brown as they did to the sound of the Motor City, Walker’s All Stars were a funky rhythm and blues outfit who were as much about the groove as they were about the song. “Shotgun” is a blast (sorry).

THE CARDINALS – Shouldn’t I Know / Please Don’t Leave Me (Atlantic 938 1951)
The Cardinals were one of the great proto-doo wop ballad groups, but one who seem to have fallen through the cracks of history. The only available compilation is a stingy 10 song collection that appeared on the Collectables label in 2006 and is only available on import from the US for a silly price.

STEELY DAN – Showbiz Kids / Razor Boy (ABC 11382 1973)
“Showbiz Kids” is another one of those great Steely Dan tunes that subverts the kind of smooth, self-regarding, nouveau riche types who probably listed the band as one of their favourites. Only this time they did it with a brazenness that only an idiot could fail to see: “They got the house on the corner, with the rug inside / They got the booze they need, all that money can buy / They got the shapely bodies, they got the Steely Dan T-shirts…” and as a final coup de grace: “Show bus’ness kids makin’ movies of themselves / You know they don’t give a fuck about anybody else“

Yello’s music has probably been heard by more people than are aware of it. If you have seen such movies as “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” and “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” (just to name two of several), or have experienced the Duffman character on “The Simpsons” TV show, then you have heard Yello’s most ubiquitous single “Oh Yeah.”

It is really a shame if that is all you know of this multifaceted group. If you listen regularly to Ed-FM’s Tuesday night Retrospect show from CFRC in Kingston, Ontario, you will have heard other stunningly creative Yello tunes as Ed brings their music library to life. (Note: Ed’s show will be back in swing on November 10 when he returns from a well-deserved break).

Yello was founded in Switzerland  and began recording music in 1979, comprised of Boris Blank (keyboards, sampling, percussion, backing vocals) and Carlos Perón (tapes). Realizing they were going nowhere without a singer, the duo brought Dieter Meier on board for lead vocals. Interestingly, the band’s instrumentation is presented entirely from taped samples of nearly every type of musical instrument. Boris Blank engineers these samples in such a way that they become the original melodies that back every Yello song.

What can I say about Dieter Meier’s brooding, melancholic, and deeply baritone vocals? I love them. That is a given from what I have written about similary talented vocalists. My personal favorite is “Desire” which was used in Miami Vice episodes from seasons 3 and 4, and also in the 1991 movie “Dutch.” Other favorites include “Rubberbandman” and one kick-butt tune that Ed uses to spice up his show, “The Race.” David Marsden recently played “Bostich” on his show, and that one is rapidly becoming one of my favorites, too.

Yello has even used the extreme vocal talents of the late Billy MacKenzie (Associates) and super-diva Shirley Bassey to spruce up several of their tracks. Check out this multi-layered Swiss electronica band that has taken the genre to a whole different universe. It is a must-listen for every serious electronica fan. Yello continues to record up until the present time, but I have only provided their 80’s (plus one – 1991’s Baby) discography below.

Jetzt, zum 30. Bandjubiläum, gibt es eine neue Scheibe. Sie nennt sich “Touch Yello” und ich kann sie nur empfehlen.

It’s strange how all DFA artists and releases always come in bunches – isn’t it!

You don’t just get one release. No – suddenly you have both James Murphy and his “Bye Bye Bayou” vinyl only project, a new Yacht single – “Waste Of Time” – and this rather wicked mix session from Tim Sweeney’s ever intriguing Beats In Space radio show in New York featuring DFA artist – Shit Robot – with James Murphy himself in tow!

Needless to say there’s some awesome stuff included in this mix. The opening track itself (played by Sweeney) – Headman’s new single with Yello frontman Dieter Mayer on vox duty – “Gimme” – in its Kango’s Autostrada dei Laghi Remix – is worth this download alone. Moody, intense, dramatic Space-Disco at its best, which will appear on Headman’s forthcoming single on Relish.

As for the rest – well – it’s Shit Robot, New York and DFA – I think you can pretty much do the math on this one!

…Living Colour! Znowu w Polsce! Yeah! I to w moim rodzinnym mieście. Radość wielka będzie 29 stycznia 2010. Zwłaszcza, że będą promować absolutnie znakomity album “The Chair In The Doorway” (w Polsce Mystic Production). Ja po prostu uwielbiam sposób, w jaki ci faceci bawią się konwencjami. Lekko, swobodnie ze zwinnością radzieckiej gimnastyczki sportowej skaczą z rocka w soul, z soulu w funky, pohałasują trochę elektronicznie, rozhulają tanecznym pulsem, pojazzują, rzucą coś w reggae albo, ku zaskoczeniu, zagrają po prostu prostą rockową piosenkę. Corey, Vernon, Doug i Will z upływem czasu nic nie tracą na jakości jako muzycy. Wprost przeciwnie, oni są coraz lepsi. Nie wiem, jak to robią, ale to robią.

 Bardzo mnie do siebie przekonując każdą płytą. To nie jest prosta sprawa, aby startując od takiego arcydzieła, jakim bez wątpienia był “Vivid”, zachować poziom i klasę na następnych produkcjach. Living Colour nigdy nie zawodził. Pamiętam, jak dość mocno mieszano z błotem “Stain”. Tylko niech ci, którzy to robili, pokażą mi zespół, który w tamtym czasie nagrywał takie perełki, jak “Leave It Alone”, “Ignorance Is Bliss” czy “Nothingness”. “Collideoscope” sukcesu nie odniósł, a przecież było na nim kilka fantastycznych numerów – “Holly Roller” czy wzruszająca ballada “Flying”. O kapitalnych coverach AC/DC i The Beatles nawet nie wspominam. Living Colour już od “jedynki” słynęli z doskonałych przeróbek, a najbardziej spośród nich zapadła mi w pamięć ultraszybka wersja “Should I Stay Or Should I Go” The Clash.

 Ze smutkiem przeczytałem, że “The Chair In The Doorway” w pierwszym tygodniu sprzedał się w USA w niewiele ponad 2 tys. egzemplarzy (nasz Behemoth ponad dwa razy tyle). Świat ewidentnie schodzi na psy. Nie docenić takiego albumu… Trudno mi to pojąć. W tych kilkunastu krótkich piosenkach jest tyle fajnej treści, że trudno się nie zachwycić. Bycie ambitnym nie jest dziś opłacalne. Szczęśliwie Living Colour to doskonali muzycy, którzy wcześniej zarobili na trzeci filar i dziś mogą robić to, co chcą, mając gdzieś mainstream.

 Jednym z milszych wspomnień mojej wywiadowczej kariery na pewno pozostanie rozmowa z Vernonem na kilka tygodni przed koncertem w Stodole. Byłem zszokowany tym, jakie ten facet ma szerokie horyzonty muzyczne. Gdy wymienił jako jednego ze swoich ulubionych gitarzystów gościa z Necrophagist, myślałem że robi sobie ze mnie jaja. Nie robił. Oglądanie go w akcji powinno wejść do programu obowiązkowego w klasach gitary w szkołach muzycznych. Zresztą trójki jego kolegów z LC również. “The Chair In The Doorway” to dla mnie z pewnością ścisła czołówka płyt 2009 roku. Mam nadzieję, graniczącą dość blisko z pewnością, że koncert nowojorczyków będzie w szpicy przedniej moich wydarzeń artystycznych roku następnego.

 Dobrze, że w majorsach pozostało kilku, dosłownie, ludzi, którzy znają się na swojej robocie i na muzyce. Rzecz jasna, muszą lansować masę gównianej muzyki, aby słupki sprzedażowe utrzymały się na przyzwoitym poziomie, zachodni właściciel nie dostał piany i nie pozwalniał załogi. Ci kumaci z majorsów wiedzą, kiedy trafia w ich ręce wartościowa muzyka. Jakieś dwa z hakiem miesiące temu, będąc w siedzibie polskiego Warnera poznałem po raz pierwszy twórczość Charliego Winstona. Mariusz Lipiński, człowiek od Warnerowej promocji (bez dwóch zdań jeden z najlepszych w te klocki spośród wszystkich, jakich spotkałem na swej drodze), był tą osobą, która powiedziała mi: “Zwróć uwagę na tego faceta”. Pokazał mi wtedy klip do piosenki “Like A Hobo”. Niechlujnie ubrany koleżka, taka uwspółcześniona wersja Toma Waitsa/Nicka Cave’a/Scotta Walkera z wibrującym głosem trochę a la Anthony Hegarty, zrobił na mnie wrażenie. Ale wiadomo, po jednej piosence trudno kogoś oceniać. Dziś już jestem mądrzejszy, bo album “Hobo” poznałem w całości. I Mariuszowi niech będą dzięki po stokroć!

 Charlie pewnikiem będzie śledzony przeze mnie uważnie, bo talent ma nieprzeciętny, głos przejmujący, zdolności do aranżacji imponujące. Czego to nie ma na jego krążku – fortepian, klawisze, harmonijka, kontrabas, skrzypce, altówka, wiolonczela, puzon, dulcimer, Hammondy, jest i próbka beatboxu. Poza tym oczywiście gitary, bas i perkusja. Sporo, nieprawdaż? Ale całość jest tak zmyślnie pukładana, że nie ma mowy o barokowym przeroście, czy chaosie. Charlie dobrze śpiewa, wiele emocji potrafi przekazać głosem, głównie niestety tych smutnych. Fajnie wychodzą mu skoczne, wręcz taneczne piosenki, a także wolno płynące ballady z towarzyszeniem fortepianu, czy podniosłe piosenki (fenomenalne “Boxes”!). Jest jeszcze jedno – teksty Charliego są o czymś. Prawda, do pośmiania się nie ma w nich za wiele, żal, gorycz, zawód, tęsknota czają się pod każdą niemal linijką, ale nie żyjemy w świecie, który nie rozpieszcza nas radościami, więc taki szczery i prześlicznie podany przekaz powinien trafić do wielu. Tylko trzeba dać Charliemu szansę, więc marsz do sklepów! Straszną przyjemność sprawia mi słuchanie i recenzowanie takich płyt. Mariusz, dzięki raz jeszcze i czekam na kolejne rekomendacje

 Część muzyczna trzecia i przedostatnia postu, i kolejne wydawnictwo, które powinno dać wiele radości. W szczególności tym, którzy zatykają uszy, gdy puszczają Lady GaGę, itp. “Touch Yello” szwajcarskiego Yello to ciekawy, wyrafinowany pop z domieszką jazzu, smooth jazzu, tanecznych rytmów, ambitnej elektroniki, ambientu. Niezwykle starannie zaaranżowany przez Borisa Blanka, z udziałem znakomitego jazzmana Tilla Brönnera, który kilka piosenek świetnie ozdobił swoją trąbką, rodaczki Borisa i Dietera Meiera, mało znanej u nas Heidi Happy (wizualnie pani/panna kojarzy mi się trochę z Sherylin Fenn, czyli niezapomnianą Audrey Horne z “Miasteczka Twin Peaks”). Do tańca jest niewiele, do przytulania całkiem sporo. Ale jesień mamy póki co chłodną, więc “Touch Yello” może okazać się całkiem dobrym podkładem.

 Stało się. Vogg dotrzymał słowa i Decapitated wróci na scenę w 2010 roku. Gitarzysta będzie jedynym oryginalnym członkiem odrodzonego zespołu, bezsprzecznie jednego z najciekawszych deathmetalowych wykonawców w historii gatunku. Covan niestety wciąż walczy o zdrowie, z niewielkimi póki co efektami, Vitka nie ma już z nami, Martin założył rodzinę w USA. Oprócz koncertów ma być również płyta. Zanim doszło do tragedii, która zabrała z tego świata Vitka i przykuła do łóżka Covana, Decapitated mieli podpisane papiery z Nuclear Blast i – o ile pamięć mnie nie zawodzi – materiał na następcę znakomitego “Organic Hallucinosis”… Zwykle do powrotów odnoszę się z rezerwą, ale tym razem czekam niecierpliwie na to, co z tego wyjdzie. Licząc, że wyjdzie wyłącznie coś wyjątkowo dobrego.

 Gdyby nie ten cholerny wypadek Decapitated mógł już być w miejscu, w którym teraz jest Behemoth. Zwłaszcza, że miał znacznie bardziej kreatywnych i lepszych warsztatowo muzyków. Wiadomo, że miejsce Vitka zajmie Austriak Kerim “Krimh” Lechner. Resztę składu Vogg ogłosi pod koniec roku. Dobra wiadomość jest taka, że menedżmentem Decapitated będzie firma Hard Impact Music, w której działa wokalista Kataklysm (i przemiły człowiek) Maurizio Iacono. Gość zna się na tym biznesie, zna się na death metalu, więc od tej strony wszystko powinno się ułożyć, jak trzeba. Mocno trzymam kciuki za Vogga i zespół.

 Wpadłem może na mało odkrywczy, ale dający mi wiele radości pomysł – postanowiłem uzupełnić luki w literaturze współczesnej, w której zapuściłem się niemiłosiernie. Aż mi wstyd. Kupowanie zaległych tytułów szybko spowodowało by moje bankructwo, ale na moje szczęście okazało się, że moja osiedlowa biblioteka jest skarbnicą współczesnej polskiej książki. Na pierwszy ogień poszedł nagradzany wielokrotnie “Gottland” Mariusza Szczygła. Jeszcze kilka stron do końca zostało, ale od mniej więcej 10 wiedziałem, że to pozycja wybitna. Warto przeczytać, bo dotyczy Czech/Czechosłowacji, czyli terenów bardzo blisko Polski położonych. Historia firmy Bata jest po prostu niesamowita, podobnie Lidy Baarovej, kochanki Goebelsa. Gorąco polecam.

 Równie gorąco polecam obraz “Shrink”, u nas wyświetlany pod kretyńskim tytułem “Całe życie z wariatami”. Myślę, że lepiej sprawdziło by się bardziej dosłowne tłumaczenie, bo “shrink” to w USA psychoterapeuta, po prostu. Kevin Spacey w roli głównej, mistrzowski jak zawsze. Jest sporo do śmiechu, takiego szczerego, głębokiego, i takiego przez łzy. Fajnie, i chyba wielce wiarygodnie, pokazany jest światek filmowy. Mało, ale za to konkretnie, gra Robin Williams, który nie chce się przyznać, że ma problemy z alkoholem. No i śliczna w takim starym dobrym stylu Saffron Burrows (choć śliczniej wyglądała w “Angielskiej robocie”).

 A jak ktoś chce więcej śmiechu, to trzeba obejrzeć “Do Czech razy sztuka”. Jiri Machacek, i wszystko jasne Ten aktor jest stworzony do takich ról. Końcówka może nie do końca wyszła Janowi Hrebejkowi, ale generalnie ocena jest co najmniej dobra. Czemu u nas nie potrafią zrobić takiego filmu?! Za naszą południową granicą mam wrażenie, że obrazów na tym poziomie powstaje kilka rocznie. U nas trafi się jeden na kilka lub więcej lat. No, ale jak pakuje się pieniążki na durne seriale i jeszcze durniejsze tak zwane komedie, do obsady dodaje niekoniecznie tych, co umieją grać, lecz koniecznie takich, których jedyna zaleta, to ładniutki wizerunek, to nie ma co się dziwić, że Czesi pod względem filmowym od lat biją nas na głowę…

Yello – Touch (2009)

Incontrovertible proof that there is a god! After nearly a decade of silence, the awful notion that there may not be another Yello album was beginning to nag with irksome persistence. There were wild rumours of a studio collaboration with Kraftwerk that could only have been started by a desperate hi-fi salesman; meanwhile, back in the real world – nothing. Finally, the silence is broken;  in Touch, Yello demonstrate that the magic is still intact – sonic perfection!

Following on the heels of my one week in London, I then spent one week in Berlin!  To go, or not to go, to Berlin, was a last minute decision that I finally made about a week before leaving for London.  In fact, I was still booking tours for Berlin one evening from my London Hotel!

I wonder now how I ever, for one moment, debated not going at all!  Especially with compelling reasons like these:

1. I had the vacation time already scheduled since early this year
2. I have vowed to visit other International places outside of the UK (tho’ I love UK so! )
3. I’ve been learning the German language for about 5 months now
4. I have friends in Germany to meet
5. My favorite Swiss Music Duo, Yello, would be launching their first album in six years and their first concert in nearly 30!
6. My best friend Jonathan bought one ticket to the concert and sold it to me!!

This was my first trip to Berlin, and Germany, so my goal was to get an overview of the sights and hope later to revisit my favorite points of interest in more detail. Yello’s World Premiere Virtual Concert wasn’t until later in the week, so until then I had plenty of time for a number of tours.

I took twice as many pics in Berlin than I did in London, so be warned…this blog may turn into a bit of a picspam!

When I returned from Dresden it was a perfect opportunity to capture some night shots along Berlin’s Tauentzienstraße, which included the mega-store equivalent of London’s Harrods, KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens).

Besides boat and bus tours…I also did a fantastic, well-presented 4 hour walking tour.  The tour guide really brought to life Berlin’s history for me.

By this time I was suffering from sight-seeing overload and beyond ready to meet up with Yello fans and get excited about the Yello Virtual Concert that night!

Yello is a Swiss electronica band consisting of Dieter Meier and Boris Blank.  Fans of Yello have been fairly resigned to never expect to see a live performance.  But, what a great idea to present a Virtual Concert!!  Yello’s new songs, plus some of their classics, featured in a 50 minute film with awesome graphics set to a concert theatre backdrop!

The evening began with Boris taking a seat in the theatre with the audience while Dieter did introductions and presentations.  We were then treated to live music performances by each of two artists, Heidi Happy and Till Brönner, who are featured on the new Touch Yello album.

Then, it was roll on the Virtual Yello Concert!!! AND…which ended with a ten-minute long standing ovation as Dieter and Boris both took to the stage for final thanks and acknowledgments …SERIOUSLY, I have never seen anything like it!!

But that’s not all!  Everyone at the concert was invited to an after-party and it was incredibly cool to see Dieter and Boris hanging out as well with their families!  Fans could continue to approach them for autographs, pics and general chit-chat.  I met up with Boris a second time and quickly snagged Michael off the dance floor to take a pic for me!

Wow, the main event has passed and the next couple days were a bit more relaxed pace for me.  I took a short bus tour one afternoon to Potsdam and toured Sanssouci Palace.

My final evening in Berlin and as with my last night in London, it was certainly not the least of times to meet NEW friends!  I met Silke (who’s been suffering through my attempts at learning German ) along with her husband and son for a wonderful dinner and plenty of drink!  I was introduced to the Brazilian cocktail, caipirinha, that may well replace my Mojito’s at my next summer party!

Sunday morning 8 am.

I’m stood waiting with luggage at the bus stop for Tegel airport and my flight home.  I look up…and see… the Fernsehturm Berlin (Television Tower).

This tower is not a new sight for me.  It has been visible throughout my week in Berlin since day one and quickly became a “Where’s Waldo” in many of my pics.

The tower is a symbol of Berlin and I find it unquestionably perfect that this would inevitably become the very last picture that I took of Berlin.  The final picture to not only wrap up my memories of my week there, but also my wonderful 2-week vacation that started in London.

J’ai eu l’occasion de glisser le dernier Yello entre mes oreilles. A la première écoute, je me suis dit : “bon, les vieux nous refont une sucée, histoire de payer leurs impôts suisses”. Et puis, finalement, après une seconde écoute, la claque. Ce Yello Touch, proche de leurs productions habituelles, certes, est une petite pépite. Ce qui me fascine toujours autant, c’est ce son si particulier, proche de la perfection. Une dynamique rare… Et puis il y a l’intervention du trompettiste Till Brönner qui donne à cet album une sonorité si particulière, proche, dans certains morceaux, de Jon Hassel (autre trompettiste miraculeux qui, lui, a travaillé avec Brian Eno…). En tout cas, Boris Blank et Dieter Meier sont toujours dans la boucle…
