19-åring svårt brännskadad

En 19-årig man utsattes för ett eldöverfall vid resecentrumet Knutpunkten i Helsingborg tidigt i morse. 19-åringen fick brännskador på huvudet, i ansiktet på händerna och på höften. Han vårdas nu på brännskadekliniken i Malmö.

Vänner till 19-åringen, som hjälpte honom till akutmottagningen på Helsingborgs lasarett, har berättat att två män hällde någon vätska på kamraten och tände på.

Han skickades omedelbart vidare till Universitetssjukhuset i Malmö.
Helsingborgspolisen har inga säkra uppgifter om attacken, och motivet är helt okänt.

Samtidigt under natten rasade fyra bilbränder. Polisen utesluter inte att dåden har ett samband.

Doing ‘The 10′ for OSM was like being asked on Desert Island Discs – recognition! stardom! how long I have yearned! and all that. Unfortunately, rather than delving into the past, as is customary, I was required to shine a shiny light into the future. In the event, I produced four golds and three silvers, proving myself more Beijing Bell-End than Olympic Oracle. I left out Chris Hoy. I left out Rebecca Adlington. Instead, I went for Shanaze Reade, who fell off her bike not once, but three times. Not only that, but I rather painted myself as both a pervert and a charlatan by fixating on her thighs. It’s like writing about Andy Murray: “Murray gripped the racket in his hands – his strong, manly hands, with just a wispy coating of hair denoting the shedding of adolescence and the decaying veneer of his innocence. Then came his forearms, toughened and tautened by the months and years of labour on his father’s lathe…”

NOTA BENE: Eurovision will return tomorrow or possibly tonight. I calculated the days wrong, which worked out quite well, as I had to work late tonight and am thoroughly cream crackered.

1 Bradley Wiggins
Cycling (individual/team pursuit & Madison)

Even Steve Redgrave, that serial gold medal hoarder, won them only one at a time; Wiggins will go to Beijing in serious contention for three. Like many of his team-mates on the GB cycling team, Wiggins, an Observer Sport columnist, collects medals as if they were cereal box tops and this year completed a hat-trick of world championship golds in the disciplines he will compete at in the Olympics. Can anyone stop him taking the top spot on the podium? We doubt it. If he wins all three, they may as well knight him at trackside.

2 Katherine Grainger, Debbie Flood, Annie Vernon, Fran Houghton
Rowing (quad sculls)

Britain’s male rowers have their own suite in the Olympic hall of fame, but this year it’s the women who are the most likely to make Garry Herbert well up in commentary. Grainger is the most successful female British rower ever and her women’s quad have picked up three consecutive world championship titles. They finished third in the World Cup event in Lucerne in June, but we suspect that won’t stop them taking gold when it counts.

3 Katy Livingston and Heather Fell
Modern pentathlon

Britain has a strong tradition in this sport, winning half the medals since the women’s event was introduced at Sydney in 2000. This year, such was the wealth of talent that Athens bronze medallist Georgina Harland failed to make the team. In her absence, both Fell and Livingston (above) have the all-round strength to mount a formidable challenge. Livingston’s main strengths are fencing and running, while Fell will look to her excellent riding and swimming skills. A possible one-two finish.

4 Victoria Pendleton
Cycling (200m sprint)

Pendleton must be the most recognisable cyclist in the country, except perhaps for Boris Johnson. Hers has become the charismatic face of Britain’s super-achieving cycling team and Pendleton is a magnificent athlete, technically gifted and with a drive that has yielded six world titles. There is, though, only one Olympic sprint event for women and, in a sport this ruthless, a little mistake is all it takes to sink a cyclist – or at the very least, to make her regret doing a naked photoshoot …

5 Frankie Gavin
Boxing (lightweight)

Britain’s Olympic boxing record is abject: just one gold in 40 years. Audley Harrison was almost 29 when he won in Sydney; his subsequent professional career has been as forgettable as his nickname. But in Chicago in November, the 22-year-old Gavin was the first British boxer ever to become a world amateur champion. If the Birmingham southpaw surpasses the silver won by former sparring partner Amir Khan in Athens, expect him to turn pro before you can say Audley ‘A-Force’ Harrison.

6 Phillips Idowu
Triple jump

It wouldn’t be Olympic year without pinning a nation’s wildly optimistic expectations on an unpredictable track-and-field athlete. This time round, Idowu fits the bill. His jump of 17.58m at the British trials in early July was the longest in the world this year, offering a thrilling glimpse of what he can do. Though he generally finds a way of making a mess of major championships – posting three no-jumps in the final in Athens – he nevertheless represents a modest oasis of hope in British athletics’ desert of despair.

7 Tim Brabants
Canoeing (K1 – 500m and 1,000m)

Every Olympics produces someone who will in later years trigger the question: “What did he win it in again?” With any luck, this year it will be sprint kayaker and qualified doctor Brabants, a man who has been near the top of his sport for several years but who has only recently started to make the most of his talent. In Athens four years ago he set a world record in the heats only to slump to fifth in the final, but he will arrive in Beijing as world champion in the 1,000m and a serious contender.

8 Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb, Pippa Wilson
Sailing (Yngling class)

The tortured genesis of Britain’s Yngling trio is like a nautical soap opera: first, Ayton and Webb shed double Olympic champion Shirley Robertson, then pipped Robertson and her new crew to Olympic qualification, causing the Scot to seethe very publicly. Ayton and company have proved head and shoulders above the field – they won the world championship this year with a day to spare. Failure would also make compelling viewing: Robertson will be commentating on her erstwhile colleagues for the BBC.

9 Tom Daley
Diving (10m platform)

It’s a bit much to place the bulging hopes of Great Britain on the shoulders of a 14-year-old, but if any teenager can handle the hype, it’s Daley. Described by his coach as being “as good as anyone I’ve seen in the world for his age”, the European champion supplements his talent with level-headedness (witness his bemused look on Inside Sport when Gabby Logan came to pick him up from school). He might have his sights fixed on 2012, but he’s easily good enough to cause a shock in Beijing.

10 Shanaze Reade
Cycling (BMX)

“My goals won’t be complete until I become Olympic champion,” says Reade, who could be at a loose end by the evening of 21 August. The Crewe teenager is strongly favoured to win the Games’ inaugural BMX event – she has five consecutive world titles at junior and senior level, as well as thighs like bollards: crucial for an explosive event that lasts barely half a minute.

Tempting as it was to pick a list of 10 cyclists, I thought it was worth shining a bright light on some of Britain’s less well known hopefuls. If rower Katherine Grainger were, say, a tennis player, she would easily have won BBC Sports Personality of the Year by now, having been at the top of her sport for nigh on five years, and won four world championships and two Olympic silvers. The sailors are also reliable sources of metal, as ever – it must be the island heritage – while Idowu and Daley are more romantic choices: a talent unfulfilled, and a talent unconstrained. Injury and lack of form have inhibited, respectively, Paula Radcliffe and Christine Ohuruogu, which leaves us with no runners (and there are no swimmers, either). But you never know what will happen if they make it to the start line. Whatever China might think, with their biometric testing of schoolchildren, picking Olympic winners is far from an exact science.

Following the article in SailJuice, where the RYA’s Stephen Park left us in no doubt of his views on the current situation with women’s match racing for the Olympic circuit, we received a response from Maarten Jamin who represents the Yngling class in the Netherlands.

Now, long-term followers of SailJuice will know that we have never been the Yngling’s No.1 enthusiast. We rejoiced when it was ejected from the Games. But with the current lack of coherent match racing activity on the World Cup tour, perhaps the offer by the Yngling class is the best short-term fix until the new Elliott 6Ms come on stream.

Below is a copy of the letter which Maarten sent to organisers of the World Cup events:

This year all organisers will face the challenge to organise matchracing for the Olympic women keelboat teams. Not an easy task and likely to be rather costly, as the organisers are supposed to supply the equipment.

The exact plans by ISAF for this are yet to be detailed. All we know so far is the first Elliotts are scheduled to be ready in May or June. ISAF will take care of the distribution.

We as the International Yngling Association IYA might be able to help you for this first year. A good solution for now would be to invite teams to sail in Ynglings..!  This could allow many teams to bring their own boat. For the teams not in a position to do so, you could offer the option forsupplied (or rented) equipment. The IYA will be able to help you there with state of the art Ynglings at a reasonable cost.

The benefits are clear: less boats to supply for you, a comparable 3 person keelboat, a strong boat, likely more teams will be able to enter.

The Yngling is known for its very equal speed, regardless of equipment. Very tactical, strong, overhang, no rear rudder. Ideal for match racing really…

Alternatively, with support of the Yngling builders in Europe, we could supply you with 8 identical Ynglings. The costs of this would strongly depend on the amount of organizers to take up this option.

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)  The 29^th Olympic Games ended on August 24 after 16 days and 17 nights of sporting celebration. Although not equivalent to the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, the Greek harvest of medals is considered well satisfying. Greek athletes won two silver medals, one in rowing (Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls) with Vassilis Polymeros and Dimitris Mougios and another one in taek won do with Alexandros Nikolaidis winning his second Olympic medal after Athens 2004. Another two bronze medals were won by Sofia Bekatorou, Sofia Papadopoulou and Virginia Kravarioti in sailing (Yngling class), while our 2004 gold medal winner Chrysopigi Devetzi reached the third place in triple jump. With regard to the doping incidents, the International Olympic Committee has commissioned a full investigation over the Greek athletes who were disqualified facing charges of illegal substances use. IOC will recourse to the Greek courts, while measures have been taken in order to enhance already existing legislation concerning doping,this time introducing harsher penalties.  Hellenic Olympic Committee: www.2hoc.gr

De Nederlandse Yngling-boot moest zondagochtend genoegen nemen met een zilveren medaille op de Olympische zeilwedstrijden. Mandy Mulder, Merel Witteveen en Annemieke Bes waren vooraf al verzekerd van die medaille. Een gouden medaillle kon alleen worden behaald als ze hoger zouden eindigen dan de Britse Yngling-boot. Dat lukte in de regen echter niet. De Nederlanders eindigden in de medalrace op de vijfde plaats. De Britse vrouwen wonnen de laatste race en dus het goud.

Wordt het goud of zilver voor de Nederlandse Yngling-boot? Die vraag zal vandaag in ieder geval niet beantwoord worden. De beslissende medalrace waarbij Annemieke Bos, Mandy Mulder en Merel Witteveen de Britse dames voor moeten blijven om een gouden plak te pakken is uitgesteld. Wederom is een gebrek aan wind het probleem. De medalrace zal waarschijnlijk worden verplaatst naar morgen (zondag).

De Nederlandse Ynling-boot heeft zich verzekerd van minimaal een zilveren medaille. Annemieke Bos, Mandy Mulder en Merel Witteveen strijden zaterdag in de laatste medalrace alleen nog met Groot-Brittannie om het goud. Om die plak te halen moeten ze de Britse dames voorblijven. Nederland won de achtste race en zag dat de 9de en 10de race werd afgelast wegens de slechte weeromstandigheden. De afstand met de derde plaats is dermate groot dat ze door andere concurrenten niet meer in te halen zijn.

British sailors are taking the lead in 2008 Olympic Sailing. The class of boat below is the Yngling, and believe it or not, it is the correct spelling.

Yngling trio Skipper Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson staged a momentous late rally.

The British trio of Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson rallied to complete a superb comeback and finish second in the opening race of the Yngling event at the Olympic sailing regatta in Qingdao, while Ben Ainslie (also British) battled back from a disappointing opening result by winning his second race of the day. Ainslie is third in the Finn Class. Congratulations, all.

Lobke Berkhout en Marcelien de Koning zijn ook na 6 van de 10 races nog altijd in de race voor een medaille. De zeilsters in de 470-klasse voeren na 6 races het klassement aan. Het Nederlandse duo kende woensdag een goede dag door twee keer als tweede te eindigen. De Australiers Rechichi en Parkinson staan tweede. Ze hebben evenveel punten als de Nederlanders, maar minder goede klasseringen.

De Ynling-dames kwamen woensdag maar 1 keer in actie. De achtste race werd afgelast wegens een gebrek aan wind. Nederland zeilde in de zesde race naar een vierde plaats. Na 7 races staan Mulder, Bes en Witteveen op de tweede plaats in het klassement. Groot-Brittanie gaat aan kop. In de Finn-klasse staat Pieter-Jan Postma na 7 races 14de.
