Siempre he pensado que cada vez que instalamos un programa en el ordenador los tipos de Microsoft pueden estar comprometiéndonos a cederles una parte de nuestro plan de pensiones, las acciones de nuestra empresa o un pedacito de nuestras almas. La verdad es que nadie lee los contratos que se establecen con nosotros, así que le damos a la tecla de “Aceptar” y no sopesamos la idea de que un día Bill Gates llame a nuestra puerta armado con una neverita portátil, pinzas para el hielo y un completo Kit de cirugía portátil.

Hay tanto material en Cds, Dvds, Blu-rays, y demás medios de soporte que rara vez le prestamos atención a la mitad de sus características y vamos a lo directo, a la película en sí, los extras “gordos” que ocupan el segundo disco o las opciones más básicas. Sin embargo desde hace tiempo los cineastas son tipos “cachondos” que introducen pequeños secretos en los menús, videos, imágenes y curiosidades que hacen las delicidas de todos los frikis fans que transpiran como Bella Swan después de compartir autobús con Edward Cullen al descubrir un contendido desbloqueable.

FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN.

La aclamada (y dilatada) franquicia de videojuegos ha tenido hasta el momento dos adaptaciones en películas de animación. La primera supuso un hostión de los gordos duro golpe para los productores ya que fue un fracaso en taquilla, por mucho que innovasen en las técnicas de captura de movimientos y su énfasis por demostrarnos que el pelo de la protagonista parecía sacado de un anuncio de L’oréal.  Dejando al margen sus logros y fracasos, podemos dar con uno de los primeros extras ocultos (conocidos como Huevos de Pascua) que encontré por casualidad. Creo que sólo está disponible en la edición dos discos, visible desde el menú principal pero situado en una esquina.

STAR WARS.

George Lucas es conocido por repetir una y otra vez aquello que le hizo famoso en su momento. Antes de crear la saga de los caballeros Jedi (considerada como religión “válida” en Australia y Gran Bretaña) este director hizo una película de ciencia ficción titulada ‘THX 1138′. Las referencias a esta filmación son muy fáciles de encontrar, no sólo porque el número aparece dibujado o mencionado en distintas ocasiones, o porque el THX sea ese sistema de sonido que nos destroza los oídos en las salas de cine. En esta ocasión, para encontrar el huevo de pascua tienes que acceder al menu de AUDIO y pulsar con el mando ‘11′…’3′…’8′. Si esperas unos segundos cargará un corto video. En los DVDS de los episodios 1 y 2 son tomas falsas…

Pero como eso es demasiado simple, siempre están los animadores para solucionarlo.

Sí, de acuerdo, después de verle pelear como un saltamones cabreado en ‘El ataque de los Clones’ yo también me pregunté para qué narices necesitaba el bastón.

EL SEÑOR DE LOS ANILLOS.

La verdad es que este contenido no sé dónde se encuentra, pero existe en la edición para coleccionistas de ‘La comunidad del anillo’. La MTV tiene por costumbre hacer parodias o montajes de películas y todo lo que pille, y, prácticamente sin alterar nada, son capaces de cambiar el sentido de una de las escenas más famosas y memorables tanto de la novela de Tolkien como de la película de Peter Jackson que, por cierto, presenta el video.

Como dato anecdótico, cuenta con la participación de Jack Black y Sarah Michelle Gellard (¡Grrrrrr!)

Hay muchísimos más. Tanto en videojuegos como en películas. la dificultad (y gracia) de este juego reside en encontrarlos. Hay algunos que son puro divertimento como los que os he mostrado y otros que tienen algún tipo de significado más trascendente, como los anuncios existentes en el videojuego de espionaje e infiltración Splinter Cell sobre la posibilidad de unirse al servicio secreto británico.

Sin importar su propósito final, los huevos de pascua alargan las posibilidades de un producto y enganchan a la gente para descubrir sus contenidos ocultos, inspirándose en la complicidad con el público y quizá, como retazos de la publicidad viral. Pero esa es otra historia y será contada en otra ocasión…

Can someone out there clue me in as to why Twilight is so popular?  Is it connected somehow to the (in my opinion) completely unwarranted popularity of the Buffy T.V. show? (On a side note, I loved the movie version of Buffy!)

I am considering writing an 800- to 1,200-word post discussing the top ten vampire stories that are way better than Twilight.  Really, how can anyone love a franchise to the point where it inspires such creepy merchandise?  (No, Yoda dolls and Vader masks are not creepy…they’re cool!)

I don’t get it.  I probably never will.  One of my friends, though, is a serious Twihard–maybe I’ll ask her…

Sure, Ron Zook hadn’t been Steve Spurrier. But the hiring of Urban Meyer to replace Zook by the University of Florida in 2005 struck me as another episode of college football’s version of “Catch a Rising Star.”

Now, as an alumnus, I’m hearing (and seeing) some disturbing sounds (and sights) that might put me in line for a reprisal of the Yoda role.

Female Siberian husky, exactly like the one I found today

Today was somewhat laid-back. I took my dog for a walk and suddenly, I came upon a beautiful Siberian husky with clear blue eyes. He was docile and playful, and his leash was still on him. He followed us around a bit and Spike quite liked him. I looked around for an owner, but none materialized. This dog was not fixed, but seemed to have been well taken care of. I couldn’t see any sores, scars, or marks on him. He was also extremely friendly.

I took his leash and not knowing exactly what to do, took him with me. I tried dropping him off at a friend’s place. They had four dogs before, two of them huskies, but now they have only 3. I thought that they could do something, but they weren’t home. Chad’s girlfriend Kate is Taiwanese and knows the area well, so she’d be able to phone people around to find out who his owner was.

Having struck out, I left the dog wander around and brought my own dog home. I left him outside. He wandered back to the dog park. I decided to get a Slurpee. I then went back to the park to check up on the dog. He was at the border of a park trying to make friends with another dog. The owner was leaving and our husky was left alone again. I took him home for real this time. He was very excited.

I gave him food and water. I had to leave him on the patio for two reasons. My cat Yoda¹ had never seen a big dog before and she obviously didn’t like him. She had her back all curled up and was emitting strange growling noises. I had never heard her do those noises before. They didn’t let up, even with the husky on the porch. The husky didn’t eat, but drank. After half an hour, he started yelping. I couldn’t have that. I took him back out to try and find his owners. I came upon a sort of temple right in front of our apartment. I’ve been told that these house temples are a sort of cover for local gangsters. Anyway, this older man with rotted out betel nut teeth knew exactly what was going on after I explained it a bit with gestures and my limited Mandarin. He brought me down the street to a place where old women were dancing. He gave the dog to the woman. I don’t think that she was the owner, since she didn’t greet him as much, but my guess is that she either knew the owner or would be able to find him a lot quicker than I would.

It’s a bit sad though. I’ve wanted to get a bigger dog for a while, but I can’t. I don’t have the time nor the place in my apartment for a bigger dog. As I watched him, I knew I couldn’t keep him. He was a cutie, but another dog would have been too much for right now. I barely have enough time for Spike. It made me realize how little work Spike is. He needs two walks a day and some play time inside. He doesn’t bark, yelp, nor destroy stuff. He’s also well trained and fixed. I’m sure that I could have trained the Siberian husky, but it wasn’t meant to be. At least I rescued him from the park, that’s what’s important. He won’t become another of Taipei’s strays.

I wonder what Jo will say to all this. We are leaving Taiwan in about two years. Having two pets is already a burden. Shipping them to the US will be expensive. Luckily, they won’t be in quarantine.

[¹]: My cat Yoda is a rescue. I rescued her as a kitten in July 2008. She was between 7 and 10 days old. I had to bottle feed her milk every four hours. She’s a bit feral, but mellowed up quite a bit since then.

The traveling Star Wars concert graced our diminutive state last Wednesday night and in doing so not only re-affirmed the emotional link I have to the the sights and sounds of these films. I’m not exaggerating in the slightest when I admit that when the orchestra broke into the Main Theme I broke into tears. I can’t say I was surprised, but the degree to which I was moved immediately once the music started was a bit unexpected. Luckily I got it all out of my system early and sat, transfixed and with a giant, fanboy grin smeared across my stubbly mug, as the rest of the show unfolded.

And what a show it was. Having watched the trailer on the show’s website I had a general idea of what I was in store for, but to actually be there was something else entirely. The spectacle was equal parts planetarium laser show and arena rock inter-cut with narrative exposition by none other than Anthony friggin’ Daniels himself. The man behind C3P0 guided the audience chronologically through the Star Wars saga while a video montage played behind corresponding pieces from John Williams’ music, all serving as a cliff notes version of Episodes I through VI. It was neat to look at the films–or rather listen to them, I guess–as pieces of music with visual aids. Despite the power a lot of the music has, not to mention how ingrained in our pop consciousness it is, lots of it falls between the cracks either because it doesn’t have/need the same punch as say the asteroid chase music or because you won’t hear a complete piece in the film. To be perfectly honest, it would have been just as awesome a show without the video going on behind the performers because the music does conjure up such vivid images on its own. All in all, a must for anyone who would still be in a position to see it (not sure where the tour is now or how much longer it’s going).

In addition to the performance, some props, costumes and concept art were on display out in the lobby. Most of it was from the prequels, with the exception of a few blasters, helmets and one particular carbon-frozen smuggler.
