No embroidery on the Yoka bear.  Even with his appendages removed, his body is still too small to handle even a tiny needle.  The plan now is to turn him into a gryphon.  He will get polymer clay claws and a beak, and otherwise be covered with small felt “feathers.”  On Friday I ordered a hole punch that makes teardrop shapes and works on felt.  Hopefully it will arrive in time.  These are probably not the colors I will use, but this is the general idea:

Sorry my posts have been so sporadic lately. In addition to prepping for holiday sales, I’ve got two art shows coming up in November that I haven’t finished the work for yet. I’m working with sort of childhood theme–lots of bright colors and repetitive geometry–and I’ve done a couple of studies, but no finished pieces yet.

The first piece I’m working on is a custom Yoka vinyl toy for a show at DesignerCon on November 21st. A Yoka is a cute, jointed, vinyl toy bear. Mine is only 3″ high.

I was kind of surprised at how many people have made custom-decorated Yokas. Check out this one by Phu! This is a 10″ but he’s also got a 3″ in the DC show.

With such high-caliber work to contend with, I want to make sure my Yoka isn’t jankity and represents my strengths/style as an artist. My first thought, of course was to make a plush Yoka, but Alisa Ross already did that.

Then I thought I would put silk pins into it and wrap the pins with colored string, like the string art projects I did in summer camp. I pictured a delicate, multi-colored scaffolding that was same shape as the bear, but floating about a centimeter off its body. You’d just barely be able to see the white toy underneath through its gossamer shell. But when I actually tried this on a little foam model, the threads all slid down to the bear’s body and he just ended up looking like a coloring-book version of Hellraiser.

I thought about trying to hold them up with those tiny orthodontic rubber bands but that’s just too bulky for such a small toy. Now I think I’ll just embroider the designs directly onto the toy. Not as cool as a floating rainbow exoskeleton, but still pretty sweet.

The other project I’m working on is a set of mandalas for The Lab’s Postcard Art Show Dec. 4-6. They’re small pieces (about 6″ squares) and made with sticker shapes I drew. Here are some of the stickers.

Ideally I’d make the whole mandala set with stickers I drew myself but that’s a lot of time spent cutting tiny shapes and I don’t have much time these days. Depending on how quickly the first few go, I will either make them with a combination of my own stickers and stickers I’ve bought (of the Mrs. Grossman’s ilk), or I will just make digital prints of the mandala patterns I’ve mocked up in Illustrator. Here’s one from yesterday:

以下訪談OVERDOPE代表為鐵猴, adfunture為Eddi, WRONGWROKS為Tony.

想先請問一下Eddi, 這個於會展中首次批露的YOKA Series 是約從何時開始準備的?
Eddi：
大約進一年的時間, 於去年年底(2008) 時給了許多合作廠商包括Tony 這隻YOKA 的原型以供設計, 之後陸陸續續都花了近一年的時間改良之後才願意將最好的一面呈現給支持我們的消費者.
Tony：
而這隻YOKA公仔其實也算是我跟Eddi合作的第二部曲, 先前是先製作了類似鴨子般的公仔並套用上了米奇老鼠的元素, 我很喜歡米奇老鼠, 所以我把他的顏色以及一般人較想不的到手部造型套用到這隻鴨子般公仔的臉上, 出來的效果也出奇不意般的頗受歡迎.

我們看到這次YOKA Series 1 中有許多不同的品牌提供了十分精美的設計, 我甚至看到了Kid Robot 的主理人Huck Gee, 紐約街牌Mishka, 以及台灣設計團隊Filter017 和台灣品牌Mania 等都在其中, 而當我第一眼看到有台灣單位在此系列之中時更是相當的興奮. 但是口否請Tony 談談這次設計這隻YOKA 的概念來由?
Tony：
我當初拿到這隻公仔的原型時就覺得他十分的像熊貓, 於是就由熊貓的方向去做設計. 而它身上穿的衣服以及配色也都沿襲了先前幫Eddi 製作的那隻鴨子的精神, 也就是說這隻YOKA 依舊帶著點米奇老鼠的影子. 然而臉部也許不像, 但是在衣服上卻可直接令人聯想到米奇老鼠的服裝. 而我也覺得為什麼這衣服非得米奇穿不可呢? 我就嘗試著套用在YOKA 的身上.
Eddi：
我對於Tony 的設計想法當然十分贊同, 另外也相當的驚艷. 而值得一提的是, Tony 是唯一在此系列中有做到巨型尺寸的YOKA, 其他人可都沒有喔! (請參考上圖Tony 手捧著的YOKA 公仔)
Tony：
哈哈, 是他給我面子, 當初他跟我講的時候我還以為我是最後一個被通知要做大型尺寸YOKA的人, 真是驚喜(笑).

在這個YOKA的包裝上可以看到背面詳細的寫著各合作廠商的YOKA公仔, 而竟然是Series 1就代表著會有2跟3的陸續推出. 那麼YOKA系列將會定期的於每年的某個時間與大家見面嗎?
Eddi：
不一定, 這真的不一定. 我們在製造公仔的過程中都會認識一些朋友, 而這可能是我們製作公仔的靈感來源. 而我們也不想訂個期限感覺像是趕工出來為了交差而產生的公仔. 另外你現在手上拿的包裝是這次玩具展才有的限定包裝, 爾後若想入手YOKA則要以盒裝的方式抽抽看試試手氣, 類似Be@rbrick的方式一樣. 而總共有13款普版以及5款隱藏版, 豐富的程度絕對令人滿意.

那既然Eddi對Tony的設計這麼捧場, 還特地的推出一款巨型的YOKA來力挺, 不知道Tony有沒有什麼特別的週邊單品要推出? 像是短Tee或者帽子等, 可以讓消費者一併收藏.

有有有(驚訝狀, 感覺被看穿), 本來也是要在會展中販售, 但後來決定之後才賣.

E pra fechar o Carnaval gordo com chave de ouro, fomos ao Yoka. Arnaldo e eu estávamos tão empolgados em comer o pastel de lá, que fomos de Cotia à Liberdade competindo pra quem sabia mais palavras que rimavam com Yoka. Sim, a gente é besta.
Bom, depois de mta paçoca, mandioca, pipoca, fofoca, chegamos ao lugar. Simples, feio, apertadinho, cheio. Comecei com um de palmito (R$ 2,80) e Arnaldo (acho que empolgado com nossa visita à Bragança) foi de calabresa com catupiry (R$ 4,00).
Pois bem. O pastel de calabresa chegou perfeito à mesa. Lindo, sequinho, cheio de recheio. O meu apareceu pingando de óleo, de formar poça no prato. Nunca tinha visto aquilo em pastel de feira, imagina em pastel “de marca”! Fiquei triste, meio decepcionada.
Pedimos pra trocar. Esperei um pouquinho e eis que ele chega, sequinho, leve, crocante e incrível! O saquinho de papel em que ele vem fica praticamente intacto! Não sei qual é a mágica, só sei que é bom demais. Massa perfeita e recheio farto/bem temperado.
Pediram desculpas e eu aceitei, sem hesitar. Sou facinha mesmo.
De saideira, pedimos um dos pastéis mais caros do cardápio, o de palmito com camarão (o outro é o de bacalhau, R$ 7,00). Bom, não tem nada demais. Até que vem bastante camarão, mas olha, na boa, dá pra desencanar e ficar nos sabores triviais, que são mais baratos e ótimos.
É caro pra um pastel? Sim, mas vale a pena. É bom MESMO.
Fiquei curiosa com o pastel japonês, com tofu, shitake, kamaboko (massa de peixe) e cebolinha. Fica pra próxima!
Na hora de pagar, o japonês pediu desculpas novamente, se justificou e, já brother do Arnaldo, recomendou que a gente experimentasse o bolinho de bacalhau na próxima visita. Pode apostar, seu Yoka!

Zen is called ‘the doctrine abrupt’ as opposed to all others which can be termed ‘progressive doctrines’. For Zen we use the singular while for the others we use the plural because ‘the doctrine abrupt’ can only be one. There are as many progressive doctrines as there are people for every one progresses in their own way. So although there can be millions of progressive doctrines, there can only be one abrupt doctrine. It can’t be different for different people because it is abrupt. It doesn’t depend on who you are, it depends on only one thing; that you disappear. And this disappearance is abrupt, sudden. This point is fundamental to Zen.

Lets consider Yoga, a progressive doctrine. In yoga, samadhi is attained; you have to improve upon yourself, you have to go on and on working on yourself. It is a great program of improvement, achievement and accomplishment. In Zen you just have to find that you are already a buddha. There is no accomplishment, no growth, no attainment, buddhahood is everybody’s inner nature. Everybody is a buddha; whether you know it or not makes no difference. There is no method in Zen. Methods are given only to prove to you , to your heart’s desire and contentment, that all methods are useless. You work on the method and slowly, slowly you realise the futility of it. Higher and higher methods are given until you ultimately, slowly, slowly you will eliminate all methods because you will see the futility of it all.

One day you will come to the point where you will see that there is nothing to be attained, nowhere to go. That moment in Zen is called ‘the great doubt’. Known in the West as ‘the dark night of the soul’ you are in a kind of shock; nothing to be attained, no where to go, all future disappears. Who are you? What are you doing here? And why this existence? If there is no way to reach, no where to reach and nobody to reach, then what us all this? A great doubt arises. You are falling like a dead leaf into some unknown, bottomless pit and it is all dark, and there is not even a ray of light. This great doubt or dark night of the soul, always precedes satori. Either you fall back because of the doubt – movivng back to methods, ways, paths, scriptures, principles and philosophies, you fall back just to avoid the doubt. But if you are really courageous, you leave yourself in this dark night of the soul, helpless, lost, utterly lost – seeing no meaning and no future. If this courage is there, satori happens. Suddenly out of the great doubt, and the pain and agony of it, you become awakened.

Then why make any effort at all? Just to see the futility. Once the futilty is proved, then one is left only with the constant question. This great doubt precedes satori; the realization of which consists in realizing that the idea of realization is illusory, and the idea of the way to realization is illusory, because all is realization from the very beginning. This is the fundamental vision of Zen.

Satu sore di punggungan bukit Ungabo, Sentani Timur, Papua, membentang begitu indahnya alam perawan danau Sentani yang luasnya sekitar 7.500 hektar. Dikelilingi oleh perbukitan ilalang dan semak-semak dengan sedikit pepohonan besar, tampak dari kejauhan seolah-olah dikelilingi oleh selimut hijau.

Masyarakat kampung Yoka dan Ayope tinggal di sebreang-menyeberang danau. Suasana alamnya terlihat masih asli, begitu juga kehidupan masyarakatnya. Namun lokasinya sebenarnya tidak terlalu jauh dari Jayapura, hanya sekitar 25 km. Dari jalan utama Jayapura – bandara Sentani yang melintas menyusuri dinding utara danau, pun dapat terlihat dengan jelas pemandangan alam danau Sentani.

Bukit Ungabo, adalah sebuah bukit yang ditengarai menyimpan potensi alam bahan tambang emas.
