In the last six months there has been a barrage of Beatles events and news. The popular videogame The Beatles: Rockband was released after Dhani Harrison (George’s son) stressed his desire to bring the music of the Fab Four to the newest generation. Also, Yoko Ono has reassembled and released a record with The Plastic Ono Band, the group she and her husband John performed with throughout the 1970s, and has added a new member – her son Julian Lennon. Finally, Apple Corps has re-released the entire Beatles collection in a newly remastered box set. This new release boasts digitally remastered sound that surpasses all past releases.

In the spirit of this recent revival I’ll be posting some interesting Beatles facts, videos, and thoughts. For starters, here is one of John Lennon’s final compositions and recordings, titled “Real Love.” The first video is the song as it was originally recorded by John (but not released) in 1980.

After his death, The [remaining] Beatles collaborated to complete the song for the Anthology documentary series. The revised track was recorded in the spirit of John, and was intended to sound as he would have wanted it to sound. This track, along with its sister release “Free As A Bird,” are the final Beatle releases (final new releases, actually). As Ringo said, “Recording the new songs didn’t feel contrived at all, it felt very natural and it was a lot of fun, but emotional too at times. But it’s the end of the line, really. There’s nothing more we can do as The Beatles.”

But what a beautiful way to go out.

We finally got Abby’s “documents” in the mail, and practiced her alias and alibi a few times. After a few last minute stops in Seattle to drop off post cards and check out some thrift stores, we got over the Canadian border halfway legal with no problem what so ever. We got in touch with Leon at Shop-Task and he was gracious enough to host us, but under one condition. He was throwing a Halloween party so we couldn’t stay without costumes. Sounds like a fair deal to me.

Vancouver is a beautiful city, with lots of nice upgrades with the winter Olympics coming soon. There are also over 40 skate parks in the city, and we made sure to take advantage of a handful of them. Value Village helped us put together the finishing touches on the Halloween costumes, and we got ready for the party. We were only in the city for about 48 hours, but it felt like a lot longer.

There are 36.2 million Americans, and more than a billion people worldwide who do not get enough to eat. WHY is a non-profit charity working to end world hunger and poverty. The annual Hungerthon is a radio broadcast each Thanksgiving to bring awareness and appeal for donations (of dollars and/or hours of your volunteering time) to help feed the world. “Imagine There’s No Hunger” is the theme (approved by Yoko Ono who generously allowed John Lennon’s lyric and images to stand for the project). Other giants of the music industry are on board and have donated items for auction to raise money. Some of the big ticket items are: *A signed photograph from Henry Diltz, courtesy of the Morrison Hotel Gallery.
* A signed guitar from Sarah McLachlan, courtesy of Nettwerk Management.
* A signed deluxe box set from The Dave Matthews Band, courtesy of Red Light Management.
* A signed guitar from The Counting Crows, courtesy of The Artists Organization.
* An autographed photo and signed copy of the new album ‘Battle Studies’ from John Mayer, courtesy of Mick Management.
* A signed special edition of “21st Century Breakdown,” courtesy of Green Day.

Bid on these items, make a general donation, and volunteer some time for other events and spreading the word.

It is what being thankful is all about.

I have consistently refused to join Twitter, but with help from friends I can’t help noticing

I have consistently refused to join Twitter, but with help from friends I can’t help noticing its remarkable and growing influence on everyday life.

Recently, Albert drew my attention to Twitter Haiku. I assume it was from Albert. I recognized the tell-tale smeary trail across the window pane. A smail of few words, Albert had set a terse question: “Twitter Haiku?”

Twitter Haiku? Why not, I wondered. Twitter seems an admirable medium for poets. Its favoured son Stephen Fry adores poetry. The one hundred and forty characters rule hints at a near-perfect burst of arrows. Fourteen lines with ten bits a line: the ancient stable for a sonnet. Why not write Haiku and post them to Twitter?

Why not indeed? And call them Twaiku. Yoko Ono recently judged a Twitter Hiaku competition:

To submit haikus, commuters have to place the prefix @kingsplace so their entries will be picked up by the Kings Place Twitter account. The best contributions are then moderated and appear within minutes on the largest digital billboard at the station. The initiative has been launched by Kings Place, a cultural and conference centre, situated in Kings Cross.

The winner was Simon Brake, a London commuter and designer.

A Haiku has a purity that defies tyrants and spies alike. Maybe Twitter will embrace Haiku. Long may Haiku reveal their truths in a confusing and threatening World.

TWITTERHAIKU

Writing a Haiku
Lines on autumn papyrus
Converge. Star streams

Waters paint the land
With lead grey strokes. Arches yield,
Expire. Patience

space

Her short stay of 3 days will be beneficial. This period starts out as a great time for responsibility, particularly in relationships. This is a great time to emphasize emotional detachment where needed, so don’t be surprised if you need “space” more than usual.

This is a splendid time for communications, you may be on Twitter, Facebook, Myspace or texting more than usual!

Now is also a great time to think of radical changes for our lives, though we don’t see many having the “will power” to start right away! Let that idea marinate for a while.

Around November 23rd, we must restrain ourselves from lashing or “acting” out, tempers may flare; don’t be a drama queen.

Friction may happen with women and our significant others, or relationships in general; it is possible that we fall back into the patterns of the past. We also see this as a time of good fortune and higher thinking of our relationships, however, so count the silver linings.

On the 24th, it is possible we become too idealistic, so be careful of disillusionment! Make sure you are opening your eyes wide to the truth.

Enjoy Moon in Aquarius!

Paloma bought me an early birthday present yesterday, a copy of Andre Agassi’s new autobiography Open.

The book has caused a bit of an uproar in the sports world for some of its revelations and even rippled beyond as the man’s celebrity transcends the tennis court.

As a reformed jock, I played a fair amount of tennis growing up, but a lack of self-discipline – I smashed more than a couple rackets – hindered any natural ability I might have had. Ironically, the player I most admired was Bjorn Borg, the cool, unflappable Swedish great.

I was playing less tennis by the time Agassi began rising through the ranks. I was in college and other things were occupying my time. I wasn’t even following the sport as much.

In fact, I first really took note of Agassi when I was mistaken for him while traveling in Southeast Asia. It was 1989 and I had a mullet-like hair, a bit spiky on the top that was similar to his. In Singapore, some German tourists wanted an autograph. In Thailand, some local tried to dupe me into a common ruse to purchase worthless jewels – “You wealthy tennis player.”

I’ve read plenty about Agassi over the years inclduing an amazingly poignant piece in Sports Illustrated a few years back which I wish I could find. Driven from the time he was a small child to be a tennis machine by a father who had boxed for Iran in the Olympics, his tale reminded me of that of Michael Jackson.

I’ve also read excerpts from Open, including Agassi’s admission that he used crystal meth in an attempt to destroy/escape from a career that he, for the most part, never wanted.

I won’t discount that his career has afforded him a life that most of us would envy, though I imagine few of us would have had the fortitude to achieve. That said, I find the ballyhoo surrounding his tome to be missing the point.

The man wasn’t driven by blinding greed to pilfer and destroy the economy, placing the lives of millions in a precarious position. He didn’t manipulate facts in order to launch an illegal war to invade a sovereign nation, treating the lives and treasure of millions as his own toy chest.

The man hit tennis balls and did so well enough to become one of the best to ever do so. His mistakes were his own and though those mistakes likely caused those around him hardship and pain, they didn’t cause the average person watching him perform his athletic feats hardship or distress.

By all accounts, Agassi owns those failures in his book. There’s no, “Yeah, but…”

Since 1994, Agassi has been described as perhaps the most charitable athlete of his generation, founding a tuition-free charter school for at-risk children in Las Vegas as well as several other endeavors. And, as he played his final US Open match in 2006, he was arguably the most beloved US athlete.

In short, Agassi has travelled a star-crossed path from there to here, arriving a better person, an admirable person, flaws and all. If he’s to be held accountable for the hiccups along the way, he should also be applauded for rising above them.

It’s an interesting twist of fate that his book should arrive at the same time as another autobiography, that of someone who’s greatest attribute appears to be the ability to gut a moose, a woman who did quit when facing adversity, has no shortage of folks she blames for her failures, and apparently craves revenge more than redemption.

But, I suspect that Sarah Palin doesn’t believe in evolution.

Aimee Mann – Save Me
from Magnolia soundtrack

Sometimes it takes a while for the light bulb to go on. And, sometimes people need a hand. The closing scene of the movie Magnolia expressed those sentiments as powerfully as any film I think I’ve ever seen and Aimee Mann’s heartbreaking song Save Me was the perfect accompaniment.

Fiona Apple – Better Version Of Me
from Extraordinary Machine

Fiona Apple’s third album found the eccentric artist working with long-time Aimee Mann collaborator Jon Brion. The record had a troubled birth, rejected and held up by Apple’s label for a belief that it lacked commercial appeal.

It went on to be one of the most critically acclaimed releases of 2005.

Yoko Ono – Revelations
from Rising

Personally, I like Yoko’s music – not all of it, but there’s some compelling stuff in her catalog – and Revelations is simply lovely with lyrics that are words to live by.

Garbage – When I Grow Up
from Version 2.0

When I Grow Up is twisted fun from Shirley Manson and crew.

To me, the daily high isn’t exactly about a gooey feeling inside… or let me rephrase that– the gooey feeling doesn’t have to be melty flowery sunshine… it can be anything that makes you think about things on a deeper level, and something that gets you right in the gut– like an emotional taco.

Anyhow, here’s a big emotional taco– John Lennon in the studio, recording Jealous Guy, and a short interview beforehand. If you haven’t given much thought to JL before, maybe this is a good time. Enjoy!

Shoutout to Black Thought one of my favorite MC’s of the Roots crew.

It’s really not that rare and now not surprising to see racially inspired topics on twitter. I think twitter is designed or its design encourages people to simply and without worry of reprise say what they are thinking. I think it’s great. Expose what people are really feeling. Malcolm X had said he preferred the blatant southern bigots to the northern racists who would smile in your face only to scheme in some other way. From what I’m reading most of these tweets are from young kids who in my opinion really don’t know better. We as a growing generation (people 21+ right now) who grew up as the tools advanced and had a chance to get accustomed to them are better off than the kids who were born into this overloaded internet.

Twitter(among other social networks and generally the internet) gets it out of people. The thoughts. Thoughts define actions. We’re talking about thoughts before they turn into actions. Some people are calling trending topics ignorant and not participating and others are promoting them. I think the way to solve this is to talk about and not just yell at people and tell them they are wrong, to maybe show them what is wrong and let them see the meaning behind it. I think the opportunity for people to learn is great. Everyone has their own perspective and even if to you it’s not correct it’s valuable as a lesson and you have that chance and power to reach out and say something. Speak up and be heard.

I woke up this morning a bit sad. The reason for my sadness I could not say, but I knew I was not happy. And so I took a shower, sat down at my computer, and begin listening to music; for “music is as a ladder for the soul and is capable of lifting it up to the divine world.” It being the holiday season, I began listening to a top 20 list of Christmas songs. The third song on that list is a song named “War is Over.” A song written by John Lennon (b. 1940 – d. 1980) and Yoko Ono (b. 1933) and released in 1971. As I listened to this song, tears came to my eyes. It is not that my eyes were crying, but my soul was. My soul cried for humanity, for myself, for hope of things yet to come, and for things past.

The song goes on to say:

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very Merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong
And so happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let’s stop all the fight

A very Merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas
And what have we done
Another year over
A new one just begun
And so happy Christmas
We hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very Merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear
War is over, if you want it
War is over now

I cannot say if Christmas 1971 was a good Christmas, or if 1972 was a good a good year, without any fear. I do know that the war John and Yoko so desired would end, the Vietnam War, finally ended in 1975. Meanwhile another war in the waters surrounding Iceland began and ended one year later, and a cold war continued, not ending until 1991, well after John’s murder.

Now, in the face of this and other evidence, it is not difficult to conclude that war is an inveterate part of the human condition, and that ideas such as the ones John and Yoko fancied are but mere imaginings, never to be realized. One such argument may implicitly or explicitly include in its syllogism the observation that as often as wars end they begin, drawing the generalization that wars always end and they always begin. Such an argument fails to give sufficient cause for why a war should always end or begin and leaves open the possibility that there maybe a state of the world in which the observations do not exist. The reliability of this type of argument has been readily explored by the philosophers of old.

Another such argument asserts that human beings are competitive, and, as a result, competition for resources leads to war. When one or another party is subjugated and the other in a victorious position, the war ends. This class of arguments is quite presumptive, and it is not difficult to find evidence to support the idea argued. In some instances however, it is not difficult to find evidence that does not support the idea argued. For example human beings cooperate in various contexts.

This example suggests that human beings are both competitive and cooperative, under divers circumstances and occasions. Under those conditions where competition characterizes the human condition, competition for resources leads to war, and John and Yoko’s fancy remains a mere imagining. Under those conditions where cooperation exists, human beings cooperate for the consumption of resources, there is no war, and John and Yoko’s fancy becomes reality. The interesting case occurs under those conditions where both cooperation and competition exist. When do both conditions exist? And when both conditions exist, do human beings cooperate or compete for resources and to what extent to they cooperate or compete? In addition, what level of cooperation and competition for resources leads to war or not war?

Not only will the answer to these questions largely determine whether or not John and Yoko’s fancy remains wishful thinking, but I conjecture this class of questions and the conditions which motivate the questions characterize the class of arguments from which they arose.

One important thing that foreign countries should remember is this: Yoko Ono is not a witch (as other John Lennon fans called her) and so are the other Asian women.

The love affair of John Lennon and Yoko Ono was considered an honor to the Asian countries while to others, it was purely witchcraft. When you visit other sites related to the Beatle, Paul McCartney, John Lennon and controversies about his love affair, the fans have the same comments: 1. Yoko Ono is a bitch; 2. Yoko Ono is an Asian witch; 3. Yoko Ono is too ugly to be John Lennon’s wife; 4. Yoko Ono was dominating John Lennon, becoming the reason why his career was not soaring high when she became his wife; 5. Yoko Ono is a no good artist- with lame songs and lame art works ,therefore she has no right to insult Paul McCartney.

Yoko is not a bitch and definitely not an Asian witch (though she claims she is, releasing a song entitled ‘Yes, I’m a witch”, (not Asian witch) as an ironic reply to those who keep throwing negative comments against her). She is an activist for peace, knowing the fact that she grew up fighting war. She is an artist and is under a lot of influences and collaborations with other artists and groups. She directed sixteen films and is considered an explorer of conceptual art and performance art. Perhaps her personality as an artist was one of the strong reasons why John Lennon was deeply in love with her that he even wrote a song dedicated to Yoko Ono. Isn’t it possible for both artists fell in love with each other that’s why others can’t understand why John Lennon is into Yoko?

Yoko and John’s former wife, Cynthia, never had a good relationship together. Cynthia once accused of dominating John and enjoying her complete control over him, saying he was into strong women like Yoko. After John’s death, Cynthia Lennon later released a memoir entitled “A Twist of Lennon”.

When Yoko made a speech in an awards night and proudly narrated how John Lennon felt bothered why more artists are covering Paul McCartney’s songs than his, McCartney felt insulted and their relationship got worse. To quote Yoko: “John was very human. In the middle of the night he would say, ˜They
always cover Paul’s songs, they never cover mine’. I said to him,
You’re a good song writer, It’s not June-with-spoon that you write.
You’re a good singer too. Most musicians would be a bit nervous about
covering your songs.”

I believe Yoko did not mean to insult Paul. It was merely a gentle woman’s way to console her beloved. One thing: I don’t believe that John Lennon is insecure to Paul’s song writing skills. Just the fact that he thought about the guy late at night before he slept makes it a living testimony of the Beatle’s respect to another Beatle. Another thing: Yoko was not the one to blame why Paul McCartney and John Lennon never recorded together again or why the Beatles broke up. It’s like blaming boy bands why they’re boy bands. Or blaming Lucifer for being evil. Ask Paul instead of blaming Asians and calling them names just because you hate Yoko.

Some of Yoko Ono’s works (and why you should stop hating her):

Yoko Ono is an activist for peace and equality. I believe that she was John Lennon’s positive influence in his songs.

tsobserver: „Is is just my conservative upbringing, or does this border on porn?“ –
tmo7734: „It’s your conservative upbringing. Good news? It’s never too late to change.“

[via Feministing, Huffington Post, yuhmm]

„Why Photograph a Black Woman in a Cage?“

*
Why Photograph A Black Woman In A Cage?Amber Rose’s photo shoot for the latest issue of Complex magazine has some wondering about fashion’s ongoing fixation on the idea that black women are animals. Most of Amber Rose’s Complex shoot, which was photographed by Matt Doyle, refers to iconic shots of Grace Jones. The image of Amber with jewelry in her mouth, for example, is a recreation of this picture of Grace eating diamonds, as photographed by Gordon Munro for Interview in the ’80s:There’s Amber smoking in a tux…And Grace smoking in a tux, on the cover of her 1981 album, Nightclubbing.

There’s Amber in a cropped grey tee, with boxing hand wraps…

And Grace, on the cover of her ‘82 single “Pull Up To The Bumper,” wearing a cropped grey tee and boxing tape.

There’s Amber, her naked body covered in oil, posing with a whip…

And Grace, her naked body covered in oil, with a whip.

Perhaps most offensively, there’s Amber in a cage.

And Grace in a cage.

The French artist Jean-Paul Goude shot that last image of Jones; the two were involved in a tempestuous and sometimes violent relationship. The objectification and exoticization of black women isn’t incidental to Goude’s art: it’s the whole point. “Blacks are the premise of my work,” the artist told People in 1979, “I have jungle fever.”

In case anyone thought that was a joke, Jungle Fever was also the title of Goude’s 1982 book. The shot of a caged Jones made the cover.

So it’s no surprise that Goude shot Jones surrounded by raw meat, under a sign that reads “DO NOT FEED THE ANIMAL.” But why would Complex choose to emulate images, some of which come across as not just dated, but riven with deep and troubling statements about black women as animalistic, primitive, and uncivilized creatures? Latoya Peterson has noted of such pictures that the women are always “looking like they are ready to fly off the page and attack.” Claire Sulmers of The Fashion Bomb says of the Complex photos the message is that “these women are so wild they must be caged–they’re sultry, snarling sex beasts.”

Modeling opportunities for women of color in general are slim; as we know, far too many designers consider diversity on the runway and in their advertising to be entirely optional. The industry’s slowness in even inviting black models to the metaphorical table is probably why, thirty years on, Grace Jones remains the most easily identifiable short-haired black model, and therefore a ready subject with which for Complex to associate the close-cropped, bi-racial Amber Rose. (Imagine if Jerry Hall were still considered the only and ultimate blonde model, or Paulina Porizkova were still the touchstone brunette, and white models starting their careers were constantly booked on jobs that recreated exclusively those women’s old spreads.)

The industry’s general unwillingness to embrace models of color as anything besides the exoticized “other” is thwarting the development and popularization of other kinds of black beauty. Even Alek Wek, the Sudanese supermodel, noted that she was often asked to pose in spreads that she felt fitted into a wider and more troubling tradition of black people’s representation in the mainstream media, particularly with regard to a Lavazza calendar where she posed inside a coffee cup, her skin intended to represent the espresso. As Wek wrote in her memoir, “I can’t help but compare them to all the images of black people that have been used in marketing over the decades. There was the big-lipped jungle-dweller on the blackamoor ceramic mugs sold in the ’40s; the golliwog badges given away with jam; Little Black Sambo, who decorated the walls of an American restaurant chain in the 1960s; and Uncle Ben, whose apparently benign image still sells rice.”

It’s worth noting that in re-creating these pictures, Complex did tone them down; gone are the chains from the whip photo, and so too is the raw meat and the sign explicitly referring to the model as an animal in the cage photo. The choices the Complex art director made are almost certainly intended to mitigate the offense of the original images; we’ve come at least some way as a society since Jean-Paul Goude’s day. But how long will it be before we automatically recognize any picture of a black woman caged up like an animal as offensive?

I don’t think Amber Rose is Black. I am not even sure if she is mixed with Black. But she is bi-racial. And calling bi-racial people Black without thinking is a problem in this country. And I am not talking about bi-racial people identifying as only one race because people have the right to identify as whoever they are. Although it is okay for a black and white mixed person to say that they are Black but not okay to say that they are white. I know a girl who filled out an application at a fast food restaurant and checked Black and White and the manager interviewing her erased white right in front of her. These one drop of Black Blood/Only whiteness can be diluted ideas seem to be so mainstream and no one seems to be questioning anything. I was bothered by this in another article that Jezebel had that was talking about a bi-racial girl and it was just titled African-American. I’m not about to go deep into this but it just bothers me. In short it robs people of their identities and enforces racial stratification.

I think a bit of history might help put into context why the image of a caged black woman is so deeply problematic. The story of Saartjie Baartman (“The Hottentot Venus”) is archetypal of European colonial brutalization of African women and their sexuality. As a slave from South Africa in the 19th c., she was taken to Europe and put on display, behind bars, in a traveling circus. After she died, they put her genitalia in a museum. She was absolutely seen as somewhere between human and animal and was subjected to poking and prodding and testing and gawking. This view of Africans as not-quite human/not-quite-animal was central to European colonialism and slavery.

This shit ain’t innocent, folks. Imagine a FASHION photoshoot of a black model being lynched. Then imagine trying to defend it on artistic grounds.

I didn’t think so.

I am also tempted to think that Grace Jones, being a pretty serious artist in my views, could perhaps have seen these photos of herself speaking back to that history with power and rage. I’d like to think.

An interesting analysis, but I think the more interesting question is, what do your observations do to Jenna’s objection that the images exhibit the fixation on “black women as animals”? Does it mitigate it, or amplify it?

For me, at least, my knee-jerk reaction was softer=less animalistic=better, but now that I’m thinking about it, that doesn’t really make any sense. Grace Jones is “animal” in a “don’t fuck with me, I will eat your face” kind of way, while Amber Rose gives off an “I’m a fierce sex kitten who just needs to be shown who’s boss” vibe.

So, I guess my question is (and I’m not really sure what my answer is, even) which is worse: black woman as literally an animal, or black woman who is animal*istic* in the sense that she is exotic/wild/sensual? On the one hand, Jones seems to demand more power, but on the other, she seems not even human. But then, it is Grace Jones.
Jones seems to take on new personas, and make them herself for awhile. She takes that power and makes it herself. Amber Rose doesn’t seem to be taking on the “animal” part, just the “sexy” part, which makes the message totally different.

While I see the Jenna’s point, I often wonder if this constant criticism is one of the reasons that there are so few black women visible in the modeling, television, and film industries. I wonder if the restrictions directors, photographers, etc feel make them hesitant to use black models. I am sure there have been shots of white models in cages at some point. I understand why the reaction would be different but would this different reaction prevent black models from working.

As an example, I find myself coming up with various complaints some black people would have had with Eva Longoria’s character if they had cast a black woman/family in that role. Another is Jada Pinkett’s show. It is so boring because they’ve made the character so perfect it is nauseating.

@sshacker: I feel that blaming the victim for the oppressor’s ignorance kind of ignores the point of the article. Saying that photographers are “restricted” implies that Black people are just “sensitive” to the issue. It seems to ignore the historical context and degradation… It would be better to have more POC (particularly WOC) involved in the production level of these shoots such that these subconscious colonial ideas don’t seep onto the images.

@sshacker: I doubt that worries about shoots coming off as racist are preventing black models from working. From what I’ve seen, most magazines use black models in the most offensive, stereotypical shots and use white models for everything else. If anything, it’s the total lack of seeing black women as multidimensional people that can do more than just “ethic” or “exotic” shoots that hurts black models’ careers.

@embarcadero13: My intention wasn’t to blame the ‘victim’ (I hate the idea that because of my race, I am perpetually a victim). I don’t see any point in denying that Black people are sensitive to issues regarding race, with good reason. I am not sure having a WOC behind the scenes would necessarily change things. Isn’t Complex magazine marketed to a Black audience?

They’re not a lot of things that are fair when it comes to issues of race or racial privilege but it doesn’t preclude that fact that our human response to racial issues given our history may prevent people from wanting to work with us because of the delicacy of the situation.

@sshacker:
Okay, instead of using the term “blaming the victim” I will now say “justifying the oppressor.”

And I’m with Artemis– it’s not the Black response that is the problem. It’s the act that elicits said response. Here, it’s the manner in which Black women are seen through the lense of the dominant white gaze, reduced to the Other, and at best, the Normalized Other.

If producers had enough complex (ha) knowledge about the subjects of their photos, then there would be less need to tiptoe around the subjects, as there would be less likelihood of offense. . . As everyone has suggested, blonde/white models are treated differently because they are seen as familiar human beings, rather than confusing, exotic, Others (not to say that white women aren’t objectified, but I speak re: this particular subject). White women are mothers/ sisters/ cousins. Black women are Strange, viewed as if exhibits in a zoo.

Shows like Jada Pinkett’s are boring because they don’t know how to write a “realistic” Black character without the stereotypes. It’s as if the producers ask themselves, “What do Black women like besides finger-snapping, hyperrsexual, neck-rolling or drugged out crackmom roles?” It follows, producers don’t realistically portray Black women because they know what is “real” about us.

Also, BET has shown me that just because a market aims towards Black audiences, it is not immune from the same trap. Complex is not guaranteed to be in Black people’s best interests just because it throws up some images of POC, nor is it a guaranteed to be run by POC at its very top level (again, see BET vs. Viacom).

There’s also a marked difference between the feel of the two sets of photographs. The pictures with Amber Rose seem far more submissive and sexual, whereas those featuring Grace Jones show her as powerful and dominant – this is perhaps best illustrated by the contrast between the two cropped grey tee photographs. Grace Jones is in a strong, unyielding stance – arms held up and a set, determined face, etc. – Amber is posed with only one arm – in a weak position and with a loosely clenched fist -, more visible boob, and a suggestive sexyface. It seems like Grace is posing as a strong figure, while Amber is posed as an object of desire.

I don’t know what this says or reflects, but it’s an interesting contrast.

@Pugnacioun: Very good point. In each photograph Rose is shot in a very different way from Jones- a 3/4 portrait rather than a straight on portrait, a full body profile rather than turning her back to us as Jones does. I think the cage photos show the greatest variation. The different hand position (Jones’ hand facing outward, Rose’s inward), the supportive arm (Jones’ bent, Rose’s straight to the point of hyperextension), the forward leg (Jones has the back leg forward, with her hips “open” to us though not in a sexual way, whereas Rose has her front leg forward, giving her a protected look), and finally the cage itself: it can barely contain Jones, but Rose could easily crouch or hunker in hers. Jones is busting out- her foot is cropped but the entire cage is in the shot- whereas by cropping Rose’s shot so that we cannot see the right side of the cage, they took all the tension out and completely contained her inside. It all goes to framing the emotion of the shot and the photographer for Rose was obviously not interested in portraying her as powerful or strong.

Because of the fact that we don’t control our own iconography, images like the ones Goude shot ends up being representative of blacks as whole as opposed to what it is-an artist’s exploration of his own fetishes.

Grace Jones is an amazing artist and always willing to test limits/boundaries. It makes me sad that her general arty freakiness is colored by the legacy and existence of racism and that her explorations/collaborations can’t just be representative of the exploration itself.

She, herself, has compared herself to a lioness/panther/big cat and her energy is nothing less than regal and fierce. I think the cage image represents more the artist fear of being dominated by her power and the need to reduce her to something that he can contain/control. The image isn’t as disturbing as his need.

I don’t know that we’ve actually progressed at all. Taking out the more offensive elements makes the subtext just that much more subtle but doesn’t remove it. Goude’s shots are shocking but at least you know where he stood.
Question (And I really am asking here). I find it offensive to have a picture of any woman in cage. To me, it speaks to women as chattel. Did it bother anyone else when they did it on ANTM with a white woman as well, or was it just me? Or is it only the particulars of black exoticism that make this offensive to people?

@GirlyQ: I was about to say, I don’t think it’s necessary to photograph ANY woman in a cage, however, it IS different for black women because of the history.
On the other hand, I think it could be a cool picture if it looses the “animal/chattel” association and just shows a “dangerous” looking woman. I mean, think of the animals that are usually (historically? in cartoons?) caged. Tigers. Lions. The “big cats” (which women are often associated with cats, hmm). Tigers/lions/etc are very powerful animals, and a man (himself, no gun) doesn’t stand a chance against one.
A woman caged has the ability to be a really cool imaged. The Amber Rose one misses the mark, the Grace Jones one comes close, but something about it still feels wrong.
Grace Jones has this…incredible vibe around her, that she just might fuck you up, and the cage isn’t going to do much good in holding her. Frankly, the image where she’s got chains on her ankles, a whip around her throat, and is sort of smiling..that bugs me way more than the cage shot. And is way more evocative of the slave history to me.

Caged bird = hope and broken dreams

Caged mammal = dangerous beast

In the former we’re trying to keep the bird for our own pleasure, whereas in the latter we’re caging the animal because it’s dangerous to us. I know it’s not that simple- zoos are for our pleasure- but I think that’s the feel I get and it makes a difference to my reading of the images.

What I don’t understand is why we still need to see it. Are art directors and photographers so starved for fresh ideas that they fall back on the tired image of a cage again and again? They attempted to tone down the offensiveness of the Jones images, but only ended up making both Amber Rose and the image styles all look less individual, less intense, more mainstream porny and, well, weaker somehow. The photos of Grace Jones might have been offensive, but that woman’s strength (I’m not talking about muscles here) showed very clearly in those images, but Amber Rose just looks like a doll in hers (compared to, say, the presence she has in red carpet and paparazzi shots).

Cacetada amigo, a Yoko Ono aplicou uns golpes que deixaram a Whoopi Goldberg até atordoada. Pura arte oriental!

The World Hunger Year (WHY), along with Hard Rock Cafe, has released Serve4, the latest in their series of albums designed to fight hunger around the world. Yoko Ono has donated John Lennon’s Gimme Some Truth to the album.

“This is a beautiful step towards world peace,” she said. “By imagining there’s no hunger, like what John sang in his song, we express our strong desire to bring a world in which children will never again suffer from hunger or poverty. Let’s come together and help spread this message around the world. John would have loved the fact that so many illustrious and good meaning partners and organizations have stood up to make this effort together.”

It is the second time Ono has donated one of Lennon’s songs to Hard Rock’s Imagine There’s No Hunger campaign and Serve CDs.

100% of net proceeds from Hard Rock’s campaign will directly benefit WHY and its grassroots partners around the globe, that have developed ways to feed children worldwide who are victims of poverty and also teach them farming and entrepreneurial skills for the future. Proceeds will be donated directly to WHY to benefit local charities, including the Common Ground Foundation and Pathfinder Academy both located in Kenya, the Pattanarak Foundation located in Thailand, City of Joy located in India, the Yéle Haiti Foundation located in Haiti, Hope North located in Uganda, Roots and Shoots located in China, Project Bona Fide located in Nicaragua and Sentabale located in Lesotho.
