Il viaggio è terminato, o almeno cosi si vuole credere. Shinji è arrivato alla fine (apparente) della sua avventura, quasi fosse la fine di un romanzo di formazione. L’animo umano è spogliato. Introspezione, depressione, innocenza e libertà.

Shiro Sagisu e il terzo atto sonoro di Neon Genesis Evangelion.

La fine, qualcosa sta per giungere al termine: tutto l’album è impregnato di questi riferimenti. Vuoi un po’ perché copre le ultime puntate della serie, vuoi un po’ per la scelta degli arrangiamenti: ossei, fragili, malinconici. Oserei anche dire ossessivi.

Tralasciando i due pezzi cantati da Yoko Takahashi (Shiawase wa Tsumi no Nioi e Mugen Hōyō), l’album si regge su rielaborazioni di pezzi presenti nei primi due volumi (Normal blood, Hostility restrained), rifacimenti per solo pianoforte  e orchestra di Fly me the moon e Zankoku Na Tenshi No Teeze (la commuovente Those women longed for the touch of others’ lips, and thus invited their kisses, la sognante The heady feeling of freedom), ossessioni elettroniche (Do you love me?, Introjection) e piccoli intermezzi (Childhood memories, shut away, ricordate quando Shinji suona il violoncello?).

Neon Genesis Evangelion Ost 3 concede all’ascoltatore un’immersione in un’atmosfera più distesa, quasi embrionale.

Ancora una volta Sagisu regala, a chi ascolta, l’ennesima perla artistica.

Applauso anche stavolta alla bellissima copertina, firmata stavolta da Shinya Hasegawa.

Continua la serie di recensioni dedicate alla colonna sonora del pilastro Evangelion.

Oggi ci occuperemo del secondo volume della soundtrack relativa alla serie, precisamente quella riguardante gli episodi da 9 a 16.

Da questo cd in poi le musiche diventeranno più cupe, più riflessive, più personali poichè, con gli epidodi, entreremo nel vivo di Evangelion, entreremo nell’universo psicologico che avvolge la serie.

Il cd contiene 25 tracce: 18 BGM (Back Ground Music) ovvero strumentali  e 7 brani cantati.

In apertura del disco è presente il brano Yokan, interpretato da Yoko Takahashi.

Su una base ricca di malincolica dolcezza appoggia, invece, un testo intriso di solitudine (“Ho cominciato ad abituarmi/alla solitudine/sin da quando sono nata./Ma in queste mie braccia/che si sono aperte dinanzi ai miei occhi,/il mio cuore spontaneamente palpita…”).

Come non immaginare a chi sia dedicata questa canzone?

Piccola curiosità: il brano non viene usato nella serie animata, ma bensì nel videogioco “Girlfriend of Steel“.

Gli arrangiamenti dei brani successivi ci donano un pathos, una sensazione, un qualcosa che ci sfiora dall’interno.

Basterebbe citare pezzi come Angel Attack III (con le sue magnifiche orchestrazioni), A Crystalline Night Sky (con un pianoforte da brividi) o Rei III (una ripresa del tema presente nella precedente colonna sonora, maestosa è dire poco).

Il pezzo Thanatos, qui presente in versione strumentale, verrà usato (col nome Thanatos – If i can’t be yours -), in una versione differente e cantata, nei titoli di coda dei film “Death“ e “The End Of Evangelion“.

Fly me to the moon ritorna. Ritorna ancora a deliziarci con nuove versione.

Non ci stancheremo mai di guardare la luna e la sua magia. Mai.

1995. Zankoku na Tenshi no Thesis (La tesi dell’angelo crudele), per tutti gli appassionati di Evangelion, è la famosa sigla di apertura che ci accompagna per tutti i 26 episodi della serie. 

2009. Ecco comparire un singolo con una nuova versione della sigla/canzone. Esce proprio in coincidenza con l’uscita sugli schermi (almeno in Giappone) del nuovo attesissimo film della serie: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance. Ma nella colonna sonora del sudetto film non c’è la minima traccia. Mistero. 

Il singolo è composto da sei tracce: Zankoku na Tenshi no Thesis, Fly me to the moon (entrambe in una nuova versione), One little wish e da altrettante versioni denominate Off vocal (una una sorta di versione karaoke). Tutte, tranne Fly me to the moon (che è affidata a Geila Zilkha), sono interpretate dall’originale vocalist Yoko Takahashi.

Zankoki na Tenshi no Thesis, nonostante il bel lavoro di arrangiamento, viene rallentata e il risultato (come in parecchi remake) non è molto soddisfacente. Fly me to the moon (introdotta da un caledoscopico intreccio vocale) risulta, in parte, molto simile alla versione pubblicata sul disco “~refrain~ The Songs were inspired by “EVANGELION”“.

If you have watched the series “Evangelion,” you would already know what I’m going to say about Cruel Angel’s Thesis: “What the heck happened to the version that was played in the anime!” No, I don’t mean the T.V. size version, I mean the song elements that was played in the original. Like the stunning chorus and the power of the instrumentals. Just compare the single version to the one in the anime, Yoko’s vocals sound really sloppy without the choir singing in the background and the difference with the instrumentation is incredibly obvious! If you’ve listened to the original version, you would agree that it’s a great song!

You guessed it, Fly me to the Moon is sung in English but Yoko Takahashi isn’t the original singer. (I think that its Megumi Hayashibara, the voice actress of Rei Anayami; one of the main characters.) It’s nicely sung and arranged but it’s a cover track that was used as the serie’s ending theme.

With her singles under the “Geneon” label must probably mean that Yoko Takahashi is a singer for Japanese animes! (Geneon is a label for Japanese anime and entertainment productions.) As some of you guys may know, she was mostly famous for her works for the opening theme
of “Neon Genesis Evangelion.” Later on, she began to work with the “This Ugly yet, Beautiful World” anime project as well as the recent “Shakugan no Shana” project. It’s been a while since she released an album but she is planning on releasing a 2009 version of the “Neon Genesis Evangelion” opening theme this coming May. (At least we know that she hasn’t given up on her music career yet!) So now, I bring you a review of one her more recent anime single!

Yoake Umare Kuru Shōjo (Meaning “Girl born at Dawn”) does have a powerful opening but in a way, I thought that Yoko’s voice was a little bit flat. I know that she has been singing for a really long time but after listening to her since 2001, it seems that her voice wasn’t the best during this song. Anyway, I really liked how the instrumentals following her introductory solo made the song sound more like a dance song. It was played well as the first ending theme of Shakugan no Shana but when I heard to full version of the song, I really didn’t think it was all the great compared to the tv size. The rest of the song somehow needed a little bit of polishing with the instrumentals but overall, I guess the song was pretty “decent.” I thought the way that the song ended during the full version wasn’t really my idea of a very fluid “conclusion.” I mean, the ending wasn’t all that solid, as if the song was cut off or something.

Same goes for You’re the One. The b-side sounded a little bit like the A-side due to the same awkward vocals but with a powerful feel. The chorus also sounded like the first track because of the way that it was styled to sound like more than one person and the upbeat melody contributed to the similarity of the two songs. It sort of sounded like “Satisfy” from the ‘World Ends with You’ with the repetitive chorus and the beats. Not to mention that Yoko does seem to have tweaked her style a little bit since her last single.

Yoko Takahashi’s singles are usually really good but this one didn’t really use her whole talent. I’m not simply stating that this wasn’t a ‘bad’ single; it’s just not her best work.

Aujourd’hui on s’attaque à l’opening d’Evangelion chanté par Yoko Takahashi. Malgré les années, ce générique reste est une pure merveille !

Evangelion est l’un des rares animes que j’ai regardé dans ma période hors du monde de la japanimation. Moi qui n’aimait pas, à l’époque, le design des mechas, je me souviens avoir inséré la cassette (et oui ça remonte !) dans le magnétoscope en pensant “bon, on m’a dit que c’était bien mais je suis sûr que j’arriverai pas à la fin”.

Et là… Paf ! Un opening qui mets la pêche, une histoire originale, un design magnifique… Séduit quoi ^^
