Date of Birth:
Born in July 28, 1952 Shizuoka City, Japan

Inspiration:
Early influences came from comic books, both American and Japanese
He was a fan of Neal Adams’ work with DC
In the 70’s he studied Art Nouveau
He also was fascinated with Ukiyo-e a form of woodblock printing

Education:
Yoshitaka Amano was hired very young at the age of 15 in 1967 by Tatsunoko Productions an animation studio
Tatsunoko Productions trained Amano for a year before putting him to work

Works of Note:

Gatchaman
(known as G-force or Battle of the Planets in the US) was a cartoon which he did character designs for when he worked for Tatsunoko Productions and was one of his first jobs).

Vampire Hunter D
In 1983 Amano started doing illustrations for the Hideyuki Kikuchi Novels Vampire Hunter D. The novel was turned into a movie which he also did character design for.

Final Fantasy I-XIV
Amano is most known for his work with the Final Fantasy video game franchise. He has been a part of every Final Fantasy game produced since it’s first debut in 1987. He worked more on first six, but has continued to do all of the logo’s and character work.

Illustrator Miscellany:
The first Final Fantasy game was supposed to be Square’s (the games producer) last game for Nintendo, but due to its success this was certainly not the case. Amano’s spectacular illustrations and character designs certainly played a large part with the success of the game. Without Amano I dare say that Final Fantasy would not have continued.

Amano is known to be infinitely patient and has been known to draw when autographing books making rapid full-page illustrations in every book signed.

As a child Amano would draw on large rolls of paper that his brother brought home from the paper factory where he worked.

Examination of Materials:
Pen and Ink and Wash

Style Analysis

The heroic legend of Arslan I feel really represents traditional Amano style. This character spot demonstrates Amano’s design aesthetic, and usual sense of embellishment. The piece is done in the materials he uses all the time, pen and ink, acrylics and watercolor. The color palette is muted and analogous which he uses on quite a few pieces. His color palette is either muted or quite vivid and has overall a light background or quite dark. Despite all the differences he balances his pieces quite effectively. This piece I would say falls under the muted with light background palette which is a personal favorite. The line work is lovely and intricate with a delicate touch and a varied expressive weight. It is descriptive of patterns and textures as well as form and shape. The face is a reoccurring style Amano has with a long thin nose and thin petite lips and a wide triangular eye, almost unnaturally deeply set in the face. The hair is stringy and can be described many ways. At the forehead it is wispy like smoke, and between the hands and at the back of the head it flows like water, but over the shoulders it hangs like moss from a tree. I think his way of rendering hair is just saturated with emotion and style. The skin is pale with little rendering; the hands are skinny with pointed fingernails. You feel the Japanese influences here. The color is applied in washes thinly in this piece, although in others he can get thick and saturated. The subject is always fanciful and magical in nature. His compositions are Iconic, not realistic but overwhelmingly beautiful like portraits of gods. His pieces are expertly designed and you really feel the exorbitant amount of patience he has with all the detailing. My critiques of his pieces are that he gets stuck into rendering faces from the front or complete side profile. It works just fine in most his pieces but there are some when the character is in a more dynamic pose and the head placement and rendering can look wrong, but sometimes he gets it just right.

This piece I presume was an illustration for the Novel of the same title, a interior page or cover perhaps. Either way I think this is a great portrait of a character from the novel that really is effective at sucking you into the fantasy world that is created. The details are what capture the attention to me. The world of fantasy illustration is filled with cheese, but Amano definitely puts out genuine pieces of art. He is an expert with line in my opinion and is very skilled at his craft. Described by Yumemakura Baku as “a master chaos” with Lines, colors and form that surpass reason. Amano creates his own intricately beautiful world, and his art is the only way we get to see it.

I’m gonna catch up one day, I …no, I won’t swear cuz being honest, I will perpetually be playing catch-up with this blog. ^^;

Two weekends ago was a 3-day weekend thanks the national holiday 体育の日 (taiiku no hi), Health and Sports Day. Wikipedia tells me it commemorates the opening of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Anyway, a friend told me about a Yoshitaka Amano (the illustrator for all Final Fantasy titles, and the character designer for many of the early FF’s) exhibit in Hakata. I dug around the internet and found the event sponsor’s site. Turned out you could get free Amano goods just for RSVPing on their site! Even better still, Amano himself would be there! So off we set to the Fukuoka Koutsuu Building!

Cassie & I in front of the exhibition hall

While I’m not the biggest fan of Amano’s work, I must say his works give a much better impression in person than in game illustrations and such. I guess it’s because at a small size, the etherealness of his works (which is one of the things I don’t like, the other being his fabric fetish) is exaggerated. Another thing I liked was that there were pieces that had these grotesque looking fairies. I’d never seen something like that in Amano’s work, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Some people got to meet Amano and get an autographed drawing. I don’t know if they were people who bought a print, or if they paid expressly for the opportunity. For those that did not have the chance to get his signature, there was a “janken taikai,” or “rock-paper-scissors tournament.” I was wondering how that would go, given that there were maybe 100 people there. Turned out, everyone played simultaneously against (Amano’s assistant?) Mariko Suzuki! Unfortunately, neither myself nor my friend won, but 7 or so of the people who won in janken got to meet Amano & get his signature.

While trying to get a good photo of Amano-sensei, I snuck a photo of Amano’s orginal Sephiroth illustration, since it luckily was next to the stage. ^o^

Yoshitaka Amano (the man in the center)

If only I had 668,000 yen to spare...^o^

Supposedly, all JETs develop a “Japan hobby.” I decided that mine would be collecting pretty clear files (plastic things closed on two sides that serve as folders; they don’t really have 2-pocket folders here. I haven’t seen any at least). There were different clear files with Amano artwork, but one didn’t get to choose. I got a black & white one, not sure what it’s supposed to be. But the fact that it’s a promo item makes it cool. And the fact that I was able to read the event sponsor’s site and know what to do! (Ironically, while my ability to read Japanese has gotten much better, it feels like my ability to speak is going down! I think it’s because the Japanese class I go to is in plain form, and I’m used to speaking in polite form, so now I’m all mixed up! >_<)

Clockwise from Right: Free Vampire Hunter D poster all attendees got; clear file; promotional postcard with Vampire Hunter D artwork.

After the exhibit we went to eat お好み焼き (okonomiyaki), which is fried cabbage with mayonnaise and one’s choice of toppings, sometimes called “Japanese pizza.” Since we were in Hakata, I took the opportunity to go back to Yodobashi Camera to get my 100,000 yen gift certificate for signing up for internet there. I have until December 31st to decide what I want to use it on. I’m thinking either iTunes cards or a good pair of speakers for my computer. Although I’m also contemplating the Final Fantasy XIII PS 3 bundle. ^o^ Even though I barely have time to play quick games like Dissidia. Oh, how Square-Enix has entrenched itself in my soul! It’s as bad as Apple’s hold on me!

Anyway, at Yodobashi Camera’s instrument section, this young dude sat down at an electric piano and played “The Prelude”! Then he started playing other themes from Final Fantasy. He had the same bag & poster from the Amano exhibit. The Geeks gather! Reunion!

*ahem*

Then, we went to Hakata Station’s info booth to find our way to Canal City Hakata. We picked up clear files with maps of the Hakata area. Very convenient and a great addition to my clear file collection!

Canal City Hakata is basically a mall with rad architecture. I think there’s a hotel, too. Every hour there are water displays along its canals. There was also this robot randomly rolling around the hallways. But before I propagate the “Japan is full of mechas” idea, some may be surprised to learn that things like each adult having their own laptop and home internet are NOT the norm in Japan, or at least, not here on Kyuushuu. (So what if they had a scale model Gundam in Tokyo?) I don’t know if this is because everyone has the internet on their phones, or if people don’t like computers, or they think it’s too expensive, or what.

Looking down to a stage area

All your mall are belong to us!

There was a Timberland Store in Canal City, and I was much amused to see the red fleeces and coats that are the “civilian” versions (so to speak) of the City Year uniform. After that, we went back to my apartment. But not before I put us on a train going in the wrong direction. ^_^;;;; Luckily, since I know the stop immediately after Hakata going away from my place is Yoshizuka, we didn’t waste too much time. Still felt like an idiot though. Oy gevalt…

SOTHEBY’S AUCTIONS HONG KONG CONTEMPORARY ASIAN ART Although called a Contemporary Asian Art a

SOTHEBY’S AUCTIONS HONG KONG CONTEMPORARY ASIAN ART

Although called a Contemporary Asian Art auction, this sale was dominated by Chinese artists which was a canny move by Sotheby’s given that mainland liquidity is driving prices of property in Hong Kong to record high prices of US$1,000 per square foot and sending Chinese stock markets soaring. According to Bloomberg, Chinese money supply has grown by 55% since the beginning of 2007 compared with 20% in the UK and US.

Some of this liquidity has found its way into the art market at this auction. Mainland buyers were active and revealed some surprising preferences.

Hong Kong artists back in a second showcase

Sotheby’s followed up its inaugural and successful showcase of 8 Hong Kong artists in the ‘Spring auction earlier this year with an expanded selection of works by 10 artists. Affordable prices meant that all but two of the works found buyers with successful bids mostly coming in around estimates.

Simon Go, Hong Kong Old Shops, Inkjet on Bamboo Paper

Works by two artists, sculptor Danny Lee and photographer Simon Go who were both new to the auction this year, did better than estimates. Danny Lee produces stainless steel sculptures which are reminiscent – though in a more organic liquid form - of the stainless steel scholar rocks made by the world-renowned sculptor Zhan Wang whose works have been collected by institutions such as the British Museum . Danny Lee’s Mountain and Stream IV sold for HK$170,000 against a top estimate of HK$160,000 (before premium). (US$1 = HK$7.7)

Danny Lee, Mountain and Stream IV, Steel wood

Simon Go’s set of 2 photographic works called Hong Kong Old Shops: Wing Wo Grocery and Keng Ming Mirror Shop achieved a price of HK$80,000 against an estimate of HK$30-50,000 (before premium). This lot points to several collector trends. According to Larry Warsh, a New York-based dealer, there is a growing interest in Chinese photography and Wing Wo Grocery ( an image of a family clan in an old-style grocery shop from the colonial era recently shut down in preparation for urban renewal) embodies trends identified at an ArtInsight seminar last month called ’Trends and Opportunities in Photography” . The panelists identified documentary photography and ’slice of lif’e’ photography as hot areas for collectors now.

The biggest story of the Hong Kong part of the sale was Tsang Tsou Choi’s calligraphy which saw excited bidding between several bidders in the room and on the phone resulting in a price (before premium) of HK$400,000 which was 8 times the lower estimate of HK$50,000. Work by this artist now deceased was also a surprising success in the Spring 2009 auction perhaps because of local media and public interest in the eccentric behaviour he displayed in his long art career.

Tsang Tsou Choi, Calligraphy, Acrylic on Canvas

In our Sotheby’s Spring 2009 auction post we wrote:

Tsang, Tsou Chin aka The Kowloon Emperor is a Hong Kong legend, famous for his calligraphy graffiti which he painted on public furniture. Undeterred by numerous warnings he roamed the streets for 50 years laying down his family genealogy and his personal history as an emperor in exile in blatant defiance of the Queen and English colonial rule. Deemed a lunatic by some, he was nevertheless recognised when in 2003 he became the very first Hong Kong artist to exhibit at the Venice Biennale.

Cynical Realist artists are back

In the next section of the sale a series of Chinese sixties-born artists, many from the Cynical Realist and Political Pop movements (Yue Minjun, Feng Zhenghjie, Zeng Fanzhi, Fang Lijun, Zhang Xiaogang) came under the hammer with hefty estimates of several hundred thousand and up to around $5 million per lot.

Yue Minjun, Hats Series - The Lovers, Oil on Canvas

On a visit to London last month Art Radar heard several Western commentators describing Chinese art as ‘old’, ‘tired’ and ‘done’. This auction showed clearly that there are keen buyers for Chinese artists of this era who are willing to pay robust prices. Room bidders were mainly middle-aged Chinese men, who are perhaps collectors or more likely dealers for a growing middle class market in the mainland. Most lots in this section sold at estimate and some well above. Yue Minjun’s ‘Hats Series – The Lovers’ attracted several room bidders and a phone bidder eventually selling for HK$5.3m against a top estimate of HK$3.5m.

Institution-endorsed Chinese artists of the fifties and sixties meet price resistance

Wang Keping, Untitled, Wood

It is no secret that Western critics regard some of the Cynical Realist artists as lightweight and lacking in intellectual rigour. Instead major institutions such as the Royal Academy and British Museum in London have favoured and endorsed other mid-century born artists such as gunpowder artist Cai Guo-Qiang and Xu Bing, famous for his invented calligraphy . These artists sold well at lower price levels but lots with high estimates met resistance and failed. Cai Guo-Qiang’s Money Net No 2, part of Royal Academy of Art Project (estimate HK$4.7m – 5.5m) and Xu Bing’s Silkwom Series – The Foolish Old Man Who Tried to Remove the Mountain (estimate HK$5m – 5.5m) were bought in.

Frowns for part-increment bids

What we did see at this auction was a much stronger resistance by the two auctioneers in this marathon four-and-a-half hour sale to partial bids. In recent auctions we have seen bidders make counter-offer bids at increments lower than standard. In the recent past these were accepted with alacrity by genial auctioneers. At this auction bidders were left waiting, frowned at and as often as not turned down.

Zhang Huan upset

Zhang Huan, My New York, Chromogenic Print

Zhang Huan

, formerly a performance artist and more recently a sculptor and installation artist known for his works in ash and animal skins had 5 lots in the sale. Despite backing by big-boy galleries in London and New York (Zhang Huan currently has an installation at White Cube in Picadilly London) four of his works including two sculptures and two chromogenic prints were bought in. The only work which was successful was a chromogenic print (numbered 3/8) recording his early endurance performance art which sees him running barefoot along the streets covered in raw meat. This work exemplifies another trend identified at the Artinsight photography seminar: growing interest in photographic documentation of performance art.

Sculpture mixed

Sculpture had a mixed performance. Apart from Zhang Huan’s two failed lots and one by Hong Kong artist Kum Chi Keung, there was a surprise pass on Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama’s pink polyester mannequin Self-Obliteration (estimate $550-650,000). Most of the rest of the ten or so sculptures including Wang Keping’s wooden female forms, Zhang Wan’s scholar rocks, kitsch sculptures by the Luo Brothers and Huang Yan and a run of five works featuring sculpted heads and figures (by various artists) sold at or above estimate.

Li Hui, Amber Dragon, Neon and steel

Two lots by neon and steel sculptor Li Hui (1977) were highly sought after and attracted across-the-room bidding. Both pieces were purchased by an Asian family who were active bidders in the preceding sale of South East Asian art. The family also acquired an acrylic on canvas by Japanese artist Hiroyuki Matsuura and another by Ryuki Yamamoto. Traditionally collectors’ interests cluster geographically and more often than not collectors prefer to buy their national artists though there have been signs of changes. Despite the recession there is still momentum behind this trend of pan-Asia buying.

Chinese photography fluid bidding

A handful of photographs were scattered through the sale but the bulk was found in an eleven lot run in the middle. This run featured sixties-born Chinese photographers such as Hai Bo, Hong Hao, Wang Qingsong, Huang Yan, Cang Xin and Sheng Qi who were active in the nineties and many of whom came to international prominence in 2004 with Christopher Phillips’ seminal exhibition Between Past and Future at the International Center of Photography in New York. Since then major US institutions have been collecting the work of this group as we reported in April 2009:

Hai Bo, Red Guard, Chromogenic Print and Gelatin Silver Print

The J. Paul Getty Museum is the latest institution to add works by Chinese contemporary artists to its holdings. Others include New York’s Museum of Modern Art, which recently acquired 28 works for its photography collection, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Brooklyn Museum, as well as global institutions such as the Tate and the Pompidou Center.

“The acquisition of these works (Wang Qingsong, Hai Bo) affirms an important new direction for the Getty,” says noted photography dealer and collector Daniel Wolf, who helped establish the museum’s collection in the 1980s. “It reflects an interest in expanding the collection in this category.”

Prices were affordable and bidding was fluid. While editions were limited to the 8-20 range and many of the lots were made up of multiple images, sales were made at estimates which were surprisingly affordable. Most lots sold for between HK$40-75,000. Wang Qingsong’s triptych photograph Past Present, Future which sold at estimate for HK$260,000 was the exception. One buyer snapped up several lots.

One upset was lot 765 by Cao Fei which was passed in. Her works are inspired by the internet, video games, role-playing and the virtual world and she has received wide coverage in London and beyond after a recent show at Battersea Power Station organised in conjunction with the Serpentine Gallery.

Japanese and Korean art

The sale was dominated by Chinese artists but there was a run of cartoon-style art, many by young Japanese artists, a third of the way through the sale which sold at prices HK$50-150,000. Heavyweight Japanese artists were priced much higher but did not always sell or meet the estimate. Yoshimoto Nara’s It’s Everything sold at HK$3.3m compared with an estimate of HK$3.8-HK$5m. Work by Yoshitaka Amano (described by Time Out as ”the Japanese anime legend behind the Final Fantasy video game” and who attracted spirited phone bidding in the spring sale 2009) was passed in. Takashi Murakami was the exception achieving HK$520,000 for an untitled 1/50 edition screenprint carrying an estimate of just HK$50-70,000. Korean works also achieved mixed results.

Long long auction

The final run of 11 lots saw 6 passes despite affordable prices. This result is probably not worth analysing in depth as it likely had more to do with the numbing length of the 4-5 hour 2 auctioneer sale which saw a packed room of 200 or so dwindle away to 30 or 40 tired stalwarts at what felt like the dog-end of the sale. Perhaps Sotheby’s who charged for coffee and catalogues again this year is still in cost-slashing mode. Let’s hope that by next year there will be enough new money supply for a return to more coffee breaks and free coffee.

by Andrew Bowcock

Animation is a wonderful thing, as the animator has basically no limits on the world he wishes to create. Before the motion picture, art was limited to paintings and music, and seldom did people get to experience a world as fully as the artist often wished. The advantage artists now have with the moving picture over the still painting is that an entire world, or atmosphere can be replicated and the director can further manipulate the viewer into this world almost as freely as he wishes (depending of course on his capabilities and inspiration). With the advancement of technology creation has become easier and easier, even to now being available to the layman. However, it’s an incredible feeling whenever you stumble upon a work that is so unique that it’s difficult to compare it to anything else.

Angel’s Egg (1985) is such a work: directed by Mamoru Oshii, the Japanese anime director best known for doing the Ghost in the Shell films. In my opinion it is a stand-alone accomplishment in cinematic history, being that it tests the limits of where art can go; in other words, this truly is an animated art film in every sense of the word. Unlike any “anime” you’re likely to see, this moody surrealistic masterpiece eases you into a seemingly post-apocalyptic environment that might remind you of how the surface of the earth looks in The Matrix.

We follow the path of a little girl in a pink striped dress who carries an egg under dress in an attempt to protect it from any perceived threats. Though the girl is alone, it’s hard to say whether or not she’s lonely, as her egg seems to be all she needs (besides the oddly-shaped jars she finds to capture spring water and bring back to her lair, which appears to be a dead, forgotten city). As she passes by the edge of a nearby abandoned Gothic town, she hides as some strange machines pass by, soon manifesting a young man holding a cross-shaped wooden object (like a tangling of tree branches with a jewel in the center). Though initially ominous, this restrained gentleman follows the little girl, constantly inquiring about the egg that she is protecting. These are really the only two characters, besides some generically-faced “fishermen” we see chasing shadows of extinct large fish (coelacanths) creeping through the town. Being a surrealist film, it’s not entirely clear what all the initial motivations are for the characters, but Oshii orchestrates this film in such a way that we are forced to reconcile the events on our own, just by focusing in on the haunting but beautiful score, the slow, long, but beautiful sequences and the incredibly detailed, magnificently animated atmosphere (compliments of Yoshitaka Amano, animator of Vampire Hunter D and the title sequences from the Final Fantasy series).

Once the man sits down with the girl inside the city, he asks her where she came from. Though she doesn’t directly reply, her body language insinuates that she’s unsure, and the man admits that he also is not certain of his origins. The man continues to quote from the Bible and tell the story of Noah’s Ark, arriving at the story of Noah sending out a bird to find land and not returning. The man elaborates on what he thinks may have happened to the bird, and it is implied that this bird found civilization and just never came back. Upon hearing this, the girl excitedly replies with the notion that there’s a discovery within the city giving credence to the man’s story. From here on out we’re subjected to a series of events that (be they enchanting and beautifully-imagined) are undeniably depressing.

Although this film runs only 71 minutes in length, there is a great deal to digest (it took me two viewings to just grasp the basic idea). Without a doubt it’s probably the most thematically rich animated features I’ve ever seen, and as long as you have the patience to stick with it you will most likely appreciate everything at work. I’ve heard many interpretations so I wouldn’t like to discredit any one, but it’s hard to avoid the fact that this film uses an incredible amount of Christian symbolism. Depending on the interpretation, the climax has been debated as having either a negative connotation towards faith in Christianity, or a positive one. Oshii’s background would suggest negative (he was raised to be a priest but later denounced his faith) but even though Angel’s Egg is such a personal story, his intent seems to keep it fairly ambiguous to reinforce the film’s existential nature. A lot of the interpretation depends on whether or not you perceive the man in the story as a Christ figure or an anti-Christ figure, and whether his motive is to help the girl or exploit her.

Stylistically, Angel’s Egg excels in every way. I once heard it said that it’s almost as if David Lynch, Ingmar Bergman, and Stanley Kubrick got together to make an anime (though if that were really to happen chances are it would never get done). Also, with the long, serene, atmospheric and mostly quiet sequences (there’s less than 10 minutes total of dialogue in the entire film) it’s hard not to see the influence of Andrei Tarkovsky. What probably draws me to this film so much is the progressive discovery through each visual experience that Oshii and Amano not only have a dual mastery over not just the art of animation, but cinema as well. Though I’ve only seen Oshii’s two Ghost in the Shell films (which I both love) and have the utmost love for Amano’s creative touch, I’m anxious to check out more by these incredible artists after seeing Angel’s Egg.

Unfortunately this film doesn’t have an American DVD release, and although it may out of their character for Criterion to pick up an animated film (nevertheless Japanese anime), this is another immensely incredible work of art I have the highest regard for.

Angel’s Egg is Not Rated, but contains some thematic peril and frightening images, akin to a PG rating.

Nossa cumplicidade. É preciso manter a bandeira baixa.

Amar e seguir a direção Dele? É o portão do desamor. Posso te pedir em dado momento: “Me desenha um carneiro?” Nega-me.

“The Sandman: The Dream Hunters” is a novella by English author Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano of Final Fantasy fame. The story is tangential to the The Sandman comic book series, and can be read without prior knowledge of the main sequence. It won the Bram Stoker Award for Best Illustrated Narrative. The story deals with a love affair between a Buddhist priest and a fox spirit or kitsune. Read more

"Eu vou, eu vou, pra casa agora eu vou..."

Hum, isso me lembra algo.

moogle

- “Cristal Cave”

- “Battle 1 – Fanfare”

- “Opening Theme”

- “Eternal Wind”

- “The Dungeon”

- “Chocobos!”

- “Big Chocobo!”

- “Let Me Know the Truth”

- “The Dark Cristals” – Minha favorita XD!

- “This is the Last Battle”

- “The Everlasting Battle”

"Lombardi, qual é a resposta certa?!"

Kuja!

In celebration of the staff’s play through of Final Fantasy IX, I want to look at one of my favorite aspects of the game: character design. One of the things that has always struck me about the Final Fantasy franchise is that they continue to bring beautifully designed and interesting characters to life within their games. Final Fantasy VIII was the first Final Fantasy game I played and it was also the first game I could honestly say I thought was “pretty.” The first time I played Final Fantasy IX, the designs and environments absolutely floored me (despite not particularly enjoying the game itself).

Video games, by nature, are visual engines of entertainment. When I play a game, I expect it to be at least moderately visually appealing. I want the characters to have interesting designs, the backgrounds to be well-done, and the effects to dazzle me. Final Fantasy games have always gone above and beyond my expectations– where other similar RPGs might sometimes fall short. One of the drawing points of the series has always been the sometimes whimsical, flowing designs that decorate the worlds of Final Fantasy.

Yoshitaka Amano

When I think of video game art, only one name comes to mind: Yoshitaka Amano. To this day, Amano remains one of my favorite contemporary artists– his flowing lines, subtle colors, and intricate character designs never cease to amaze. Amano is responsible for designing the characters for the first six Final Fantasy games as well as for providing promotional and character artwork for later titles. His work has set the tone for the Final Fantasy world that we have all become familiar with over the years.

I may not be able to tell you who programmed a games battle system, but I can tell you that Yoshitaka Amano’s name has become synonymous with the Final Fantasy franchise. His conceptual work has lead to the development of some of the most loved characters in RPG history.

For me, character design in video games provides more to players than dialogue or plot every will. A character’s hair, clothing, and features allow to have a glimpse into the life of the character and the customs of that characters world. Besides, if I am going to spend 40+ hours staring at Zidane’s backside I want it to be an attractive one.

So, readers, what are some of your favorite designs for characters in video games?

--> Sakaguchi, Amano e Uematsu

- Fighter: Pode carregar armas pesadas e armaduras, podendo causar grande dano físico.

Eu falando não adianta nada, então abaixo estão algumas musicas presentes no jogo, retiradas do álbum “All Sounds of Final Fantasy”. Ouçam e tirem suas conclusões:

- “Opening Theme”

- “Cornelia Castle”

- “Main Theme”

- “Matoya’s Cavern”

- “Town”

- “Battle Scene 1”

- “Victory!”

- “Ending Theme”

Versão do GBA

The Sandman, Book 11 (although can be read at any point)

Length: 128 pages

Genre: Short Story, Fantasy, sort-of-graphic-novel-y.

Started: 21 March 2009
Finished: 21 March 2009

Verdict? N/A

A fox, a monk, and
gorgeous pictures of Dream make
this tale come to life.

Bah. Not one of my better haikus – which seems even worse, given that it’s for a book based on a Japanese legend.

Summary: The Dream Hunters is a lavishly told and gorgeously illustrated take of the Japanese folk tale “The Fox, The Monk, and The Mikado of All Night’s Dreaming”, set in the Sandman universe. In it, a fox falls in love with a monk who lives alone in a remote temple, and she is willing to sacrifice her life to save his – even if it means invoking the Dream King’s help. The tale is told in prose, not in typical graphic-novel format, but Yoshitaka Amano’s ethereal illustrations adorn every facing page.

Review: A beautiful little book that should be enjoyed by Sandman fans and non-Sandman fans alike. While a fair bit of this does take place in the Dreaming, and several familiar faces other than Morpheus make an appearance, it would certainly be understandable and enjoyable without having read the ten volumes that make up the “main” Sandman canon. It’s a lovely tale, and I loved how Gaiman retained the Japanese folk-tale feeling while still working it into the Sandman universe – particularly when Cain and Abel showed up. The artwork similarly treads the border between the two worlds, giving us a vision of the Dream King who is simultaneously recognizable yet new, and who acts a reminder of the universality of the emotions if not the experiences of the tale. 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Recommendation: An excellent introduction to Japanese folklore, the Sandman universe, or Gaiman’s storytelling in general. It’s a fast read, and so lovely that it shouldn’t be missed.

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,

Old time is still a-flying

And this same flower that smiles today

Tomorrow will be dying.
