I was struck but the simplicity of the encouragement and even the enthusiasm of the “command”. That line was a gift to Maria that she never forgets. And now, it is a line that I shall not forget.

You see, I am in the middle of an awakening of a vision for work that I have been called to do in the world. The vision was given, without direction, about 15 years ago. The seed was planted and I knew it then, but had no idea yet what the vision really meant. Since then I’ve had confirmations and nudging  dreams which have kept the vision alive, but quiet in my mind. And now, last week I had another vision – one that has urging and purpose and a picture. One that I can now wrap my head around. It’s too early to tell the world about it, but it has already begun to urge me to action. In a flash, a prayer was answered. In a moment, a purpose was set, and consequently a passion has been lit in my heart. In the days since, my mind has played the doubting game as to my ability to bring my vision to life. But I will not listen to my doubting mind. I will follow my heart to create my vision. It is the passionate heart that has created all good and wonderful things in this world. And that is why Eunice’s words struck me.

As we go into this weekend of celebrating Mother’s Day here in the US, I think of my mother the way Maria thinks of hers – with love and a positive gratefulness. I am thankful for so many things about my Mom. I am thankful that she had an open heart for a little raggedy girl in the orphanage. I am thankful that she persevered through the emotional baggage that came hand-in-hand with adopting me and that she was strong enough to raise me with love and integrity of her upbringing. I am thankful that she has given me the gift of believing that I can be and do whatever I put my mind to.

I am also thankful that I have been blessed to be a mother. My kids, Tony & Maria, are the joy of my heart. They are embarking on their journeys of adulthood as they are both engaged. Soon they will broaden my joy with families of their own. I am mindful that my role as mother is changing from disciplinarian and teacher to one of friend, confidante, and encourager. I am blessed and thankful that they are healthy and happy and on their way.

As a side note, this year, I am thankful that I have forgiven and released my birth mother. For that reason alone I nod my head in her direction in spirit to acknowledge that the life lesson is learned and I am whole again.

And I acknowledge and appreciate Eunice Kennedy Shriver, for adding a little bit more inspiration into my heart. To prod me into the conviction that I can … I must … and I will!

There are a few different social media platforms that I am involved with that actively score content based on the companies preformatted algorithm. Klout, Empire Avenue and Kred all have some form of ranking, grading, or number placed upon YOUR social media activity. I am not saying that any of these algorithms are wrong in general but should we base OUR engagement and or activity on ranking higher with any of these platforms? Shouldn’t we instead focus up providing content that is of interest of our friends and followers?
Like I said, I am involved with these platforms but I do not base ANY of my online activity on increasing any of these scores, ANYMORE. It is very easy to allow your own competitive nature to dictate the types of content that you promote from your brand based on increasing your score. I have been down that road and it really is not a good path to be on. This is primarily because it diminishes the purpose of social media to a degree and cheapens the value of your content because the focus becomes about increasing your score instead of providing content of value.
I’ve notice that due to a change in whatever algorithm Klout is using these days, people have begun to “game” the system with mass Facebook photo tagging. I’m not speaking of a n occasional tag from a friend that you interact with on a regular basis, I am speaking of mass tagging, everyday from acquaintances whom you have little or no interaction with on a regular basis. I just had to block a person that tagged me on 6 photos all within 3 minutes and the kicker is that I very seldom had any interaction with this person. It was so bad that I couldn’t find my own content or content that was shared by legitimate engaging friends and followers.
How does this kind of behavior increase your social media engagement, legitimately? The score gamers post content and tag you on the content, so the person tagged either feels that they shouldn’t be rude by not responding or they automatically “answer when called” as we innately do. So does this increase your ability to produce engaging content that has the ability to speak to people, touch their heart or increase the ability to make them think? Umm NO! However they did increase their Klout score because they tagged the same 45 people that they tag every day and the people that were tagged responded, which creates dialog on the post. So, since there were a high percentage of people to comment to the post, they get a Klout score bump. Oh yay! This, to me displays that the person creating the tags do not have a firm grasp on what social media is about and the purpose of creating content. I was even venture to say that it is a n00b move for the so called social media gurus.

As a Digital Marketer that is listed on Klout, Kred and a player of Empire Avenue I am aware of my scores on all platforms but I am not driven to perform any action to increase my numbers. It simply takes away from the genuine ability to engage and create content that I believe people are looking for when they follow me on my social media channels. Additionally, it takes away from the enjoyment of social media when it becomes a game to get the highest score at all costs.
I am not a hater of any of these platforms because they do have value in the social media arena. However, I would like to see less gamed content with the exclusive goal of chasing a score and more genuine sharing of content that is of value to readers.

He was by far the most remarkable man that ever set foot on this earth. He preached a religion, founded a state, built a nation, laid down a moral code, initiated numerous social and political reforms, established a powerful and dynamic society to practice and represent his teachings and completely revolutionized the worlds of human thought and behavior for all times to come.

“HIS NAME IS MUHAMMAD” May Peace of God Be Upon Him (pbuh)
He was born in Arabia in the year 570 C.E. (common era), started his mission of preaching the religion of Truth, Islam (submission to One God) at the age of forty and departed from this world at the age of sixty-three.

During this short period of 23 years of his Prophethood, he changed the complete Arabian peninsula from paganism and idolatry to worship of One God, from tribal quarrels and wars to national solidarity and cohesion, from drunkenness and debauchery to sobriety and piety, from lawlessness and anarchy to disciplined living, from utter bankruptcy to the highest standards of moral excellence. Human history has never known such a complete transformation of a people or a place before or since – and IMAGINE all these unbelievable wonders in JUST OVER TWO DECADES.

LAMARTINE, the renowned historian speaking on the essentials of human greatness wonders:

“If greatness of purpose, smallness of means and astounding results are the three criteria of human genius, who could dare to compare any great man in modern history with Muhammad? The most famous men created arms, laws and empires only. They founded, if anything at all, no more than material powers which often crumbled away before their eyes. This man moved not only armies, legislation, empires, peoples and dynasties, but millions of men in one-third of the then inhabited world; and more than that, he moved the altars, the gods, the religions, the ideas, the beliefs and souls….his forbearance in victory, his ambition, which was entirely devoted to one idea and in no manner striving for an empire; his endless prayers, his mystic conversations with God, his death and his triumph after death; all these attest not to an imposture but to a firm conviction which gave him the power to restore a dogma. This dogma was two-fold, the unity of God and the immateriality of God; the former telling what God is, the latter telling what God is not; the one overthrowing false gods with the sword, the other starting an idea with the words. “Philosopher, orator, apostle, legislator, warrior, conqueror of ideas, restorer of rational dogmas, of a cult without images, the founder of twenty terrestrial empires and of one spiritual empire, that is MUHAMMAD. As regards all the standards by which Human Greatness may be measured, we may well ask, IS THERE ANY MAN GREATER THAN HE?” (Lamartine, HISTOIRE DE LA TURQUIE, Paris, 1854, Vol. II, pp 276-277)

The world has had its share of great personalities. But these were one-sided figures who distinguished themselves in but one or two fields, such as religious thought or military leadership. The lives and teachings of these great personalities of the world are shrouded in the mist of time.
There is so much speculation about the time and place of their birth, the mode and style of their life, the nature and detail of their teachings and the degree and measure of their success or failure that it is impossible for humanity to reconstruct accurately the lives and teachings of these men.

Not so this man. Muhammad (pbuh) accomplished so much in such diverse fields of human thought and behavior in the fullest blaze of human history. Every detail of his private life and public utterances has been accurately documented and faithfully preserved to our day. The authenticity of the record so preserved are vouched for not only by the faithful followers but even by his prejudiced critics.

Muhammad (pbuh) was a religious teacher, a social reformer, a moral guide, an administrative colossus, a faithful friend, a wonderful companion, a devoted husband, a loving father – all in one. No other man in history ever excelled or equaled him in any of these different aspects of life – but it was only for the selfless personality of Muhammad (pbuh) to achieve such incredible perfections.

MAHATMA GANDHI, speaking on the character of Muhammad, (pbuh) says in YOUNG INDIA:

“I wanted to know the best of one who holds today’s undisputed sway over the hearts of millions of mankind….I became more than convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet, the scrupulous regard for his pledges, his intense devotion to this friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. “These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. When I closed the 2nd volume (of the Prophet’s biography), I was sorry there was not more for me to read of the great life.”

THOMAS CALYLE in his HEROES AND HERO WORSHIP, was simply amazed as to:

“how one man single-handedly, could weld warring tribes and wandering Bedouins into a most powerful and civilized nation in less than two decades.”

DIWAN CHAND SHARMA wrote:

“Muhammad was the soul of kindness, and his influence was felt and never forgotten by those around him.” (D.C. Sharma, THE PROPHETS OF THE EAST, Calcutta, 1935, pp. 12)

EDWARD GIBBON and SIMON OCKLEY speaking on the profession of ISLAM write:

“‘I BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, AND MAHOMET, AN APOSTLE OF GOD’ is the simple and invariable profession of Islam. The intellectual image of the Deity has never been degraded by any visible idol; the honor of the Prophet has never transgressed the measure of human virtues; and his living precepts have restrained the gratitude of his disciples within the bounds of reason and religion.” (HISTORY OF THE SARACEN EMPIRES, London, 1870, p. 54)
Muhammad (pbuh) was nothing more or less than a human being. But he was a man with a noble mission, which was to unite humanity on the worship of ONE and ONLY ONE GOD and to teach them the way to honest and upright living based on the commands of God. He always described himself as, ‘A Servant and Messenger of God,’ and so indeed every action of his proclaimed to be.

Speaking on the aspect of equality before God in Islam, the famous poetess of India, SAROJINI NAIDU says:

“It was the first religion that preached and practiced democracy; for, in the mosque, when the call for prayer is sounded and worshippers are gathered together, the democracy of Islam is embodied five times a day when the peasant and king kneel side by side and proclaim: ‘God Alone is Great’… I have been struck over and over again by this indivisible unity of Islam that makes man instinctively a brother.” (S. Naidu, IDEALS OF ISLAM, vide Speeches & Writings, Madras, 1918, p. 169)

In the words of PROF. HURGRONJE:

“The league of nations founded by the prophet of Islam put the principle of international unity and human brotherhood on such universal foundations as to show candle to other nations.” He continues: “The fact is that no nation of the world can show a parallel to what Islam has done towards the realization of the idea of the League of Nations.”
The world has not hesitated to raise to divinity, individuals whose lives and missions have been lost in legend. Historically speaking, none of these legends achieved even a fraction of what Muhammad (pbuh) accomplished. And all his striving was for the sole purpose of uniting mankind for the worship of One God on the codes of moral excellence. Muhammad (pbuh) or his followers never at any time claimed that he was a Son of God or the God-incarnate or a man with divinity – but he always was and is even today considered as only a Messenger chosen by God.

MICHAEL H. HART in his recently published book on ratings of men who contributed towards the benefit and upliftment of mankind writes:

“My choice of Muhammad to lead the list of the world’s most influential persons may surprise some readers and may be questioned by others, but he was the only man in history who was supremely successful on both the religious and secular levels.” (M.H. Hart, THE 100: A RANKING OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSONS IN HISTORY, New York, 1978, p. 33)

K. S. RAMAKRISHNA RAO, an Indian Professor of Philosophy in his booklet, “Muhammad, The Prophet of Islam,” calls him the “PERFECT MODEL FOR HUMAN LIFE.” Prof. Ramakrishna Rao explains his point by saying:

“The personality of Muhammad, it is most difficult to get into the whole truth of it. Only a glimpse of it I can catch. What a dramatic succession of picturesque scenes! There is Muhammad, the Prophet. There is Muhammad, the Warrior; Muhammad, the Businessman; Muhammad, the Statesman; Muhammad, the Orator; Muhammad, the Reformer; Muhammad, the Refuge of Orphans; Muhammad, the Protector of Slaves; Muhammad, the Emancipator of Women; Muhammad, the Judge; Muhammad, the Saint. All in all these magnificent roles, in all these departments of human activities, he is alike a hero.”

Today after a lapse of fourteen centuries, the life and teachings of MUHAMMAD (pbuh) have survived without the slightest loss, alteration or interpolation. They offer the same undying hope for treating mankind’s many ills, which they did when he was alive. This is not a claim of Muhammad’s (pbuh) followers but also the inescapable conclusion forced upon by a critical and unbiased history.

The least YOU could do as a thinking and concerned human being is to stop for a moment and ask yourself: Could these statements sounding so extraordinary and revolutionary be really true? And supposing they really are true and you did not know this man MUHAMMAD (pbuh) or hear about him, isn’t it time you responded to this tremendous challenge and put in some effort to know him?

It will cost you nothing but it may prove to be the beginning of a completely new era in your life.

“Yo me dedico a esto del cine desde hace veinte años. Es mi trabajo, con las películas pago la hipoteca y el colegio de las niñas. Cuando las películas van mal, se me ponen los huevos de corbata porque igual no consigo trabajar el año que viene. Cuando van bien, puedo pensar en proyectos más arriesgados. Así funciona. Vales lo que ha hecho tu última película. Todos lo sabemos y me parece justo. Son las reglas del juego.

¿Qué es esta historia del cine español? ¿Quiénes somos? ¿Por qué estamos aquí, y no otros mejores, que seguro que los hay? ¿Por qué lo de fuera parece mucho más bonito? ¿Por que Spiderman 3 no es española? Todas estas preguntas y muchas más se responderán adecuadamente en este apasionante artículo.

A los que hacemos cine se nos presentan tres opciones: afrontar un proyecto pequeño, íntimo, personal, socialmente comprometido. Rodar una “pequeña joya”, como las denominaba Fernández-Santos, que nos da prestigio en festivales, pero que no genera industria. Éste ha sido el camino adoptado predominantemente desde los setenta y ochenta, y sigue vivo hasta hoy.

Dos: lanzarse al cine de género intentando llegar al público, con una productora que se deja la piel, con dinero de una televisión, muchas ganas y poca experiencia. Es el modelo nacido en los noventa, que ha dado buenos resultados y que genera industria, pero no la suficiente. Tres: salir corriendo y buscarte la vida en otra parte. Es el modelo adoptado por muchos amigos, que se hartan de peleárselo, o de las nuevas generaciones, que no quieren perder el tiempo. Me parece honesto. Tampoco genera mucha industria.

Hay otro camino. Pero antes de desvelarlo, una pequeña digresión sobre mi momento anímico actual.

Escribo este artículo a las tres y veinte de la madrugada. No puedo dormir porque tengo un jet lag del quince, tras un viaje a Los Ángeles para hablar con Paramount y Universal de nuestro próximo proyecto. Como la mayor parte de los que nos dedicamos a esta profesión, aunque tu sede social esté en Burgos, llega un momento en que comienzas a viajar a Hollywood para reunirte con gente, asunto agotador y divertidísimo. Mi próxima película tiene producción francesa y española. Se rodará en inglés y contaremos con socios americanos. La película se rodará en Alicante, Londres y Miami. El equipo, madrileño, catalán y vasco, aunque también hay un par de tipos de Canarias. El vino, de La Rioja; el cordero, de Aranda.

Este sin Dios es la única manera de hacer las cosas desde Europa. Unirnos en proyectos comunes. Buscar financiación en otros países, coproducir. Si queremos jugar en primera división, hay que mover el culo. Creo que es posible.

¿Cuál es la síntesis del proceso dialéctico? Eliminar de la tesis los elementos que producen contradicciones. En este caso, a mi parecer, la solución pasa por intentar que nuestro cine sea menos español, aunque suene fuerte decirlo. Abrir los contenidos a mercados internacionales. Hay que abandonar la mochila de nuestro complejo intelectual, porque no deja de ser una excusa. Hablar de industria, de producto y de mercado. El cine es todo eso, y no tenemos que pedir perdón por ello. Las pequeñas joyas son maravillosas, pero son pocas. El mercado no puede abastecerse exclusivamente de Beluga. Esto es un trabajo, no una tienda delicatessen. Si pensamos en pequeño, si queremos artesanía en lugar de industria, estamos perdiendo un terreno que ocuparán los que piensan en grande.”

El artítulo sigue. No lo voy a copiar todo porque con esto el señor Alex de la Iglesia ya ha dicho mucho. Tenemos que dejar de pensar en pequeño y empezar a creer que sí que se pueden realizar otro tipo de películas. A lo mejor no tenemos el dinero que hay en USA, pero eso no puede impedir hacer historias igual o mejores. Tenemos la misma capacidad creativa y técnica, porque no hacerlo entonces?

¿Porqué?

Pues porque ha sido el año de los vampiros y de los zombies. Y parece que el 2009 también llegan los hombres-lobo, así que realmente algo está ocurriendo.

Pero, sin duda, yo me quedo con la resurreción del mundo zombie. Yo nunca he sido un gran fan de todo este sub-mundo, pero poco a poco me ha ido atrayendo. Digamos que me gusta la nueva visión de los zombies desde la aparición de 28 días después. Porque yo creo que ese ha sido el punto de inflexión. 28 días después abrió la puerta a un mundo zombie donde los muertos vivientes ya no eran simplemente muertos vivientes, sino que era una enfermedad (la rabia) y que los contagiados ya no sólo eran muertos tontorrones que caminaban arrastrándose, sino que corrían, y mucho.

Pues bien, yo quiero recomendaros una serie de libros, series y películas que os harán ver que el mundo de los muertos vivientes merece la pena.

Libros:

- Guía de supervivencia zombi: Qué mejor forma de entrar en este mundo que a través de una guía que te ayudará a sobrevivir en un mundo dominado por zombies?

- Guerra mundial Z: Del mismo autor que la guía de supervivencia, este libro es un conjunto de entrevistas a mucha gente que sobrevivió a la peor plaga de zombies, la llamada Guerra Mundial Z. Realmente es uno de los mejores libros que he leído este año.

Series:

- Dead Set: Siguiendo la estela de la Guerra Mundial Z, ¿Qué ocurriría si esta plaga ocurriese un día en que se está retransmitiendo en directo Gran Hermanos en Inglaterra? Y si todos se convierten en zombis menos los que siguen encerrados en casa? ¿Qué ocurriría con los concursantes? Son solo cinco capítulos, a qué esperas?

Películas:

28 días después y 28 semanas después. Seguro que ya las habeis visto, pero quién no lo haya hecho, que aproveche, porque fueron la semilla de todo lo que vino después.

P.S.: Y ya puestos, miraros True Blood. Son vampiros, pero unos vampiros muy humanos!

Y si, además, podéis encontrar los blogs de los guionistas, no lo dudéis y añadirlos a vuestros favoritos. Porque los guionistas son las piezas fundamentales dentro del mundo audiovisual. Ellos son los que crean las historias, los que escriben los diálogos, los que se imaginan una estructura… y los que después son olvidados a “favor” del director de la película (o de los actores).

En sus blogs puedes descubrir que, en muchos casos, ellos son los grandes críticos de su propia obra, que aunque nos quejemos de lo malas que son las series nacionales, ellos ya lo saben e intentan luchar por cambiar nuestra percepción.

Por eso, yo recominendo que visitéis asiduamente sus blogs, porque seguro que descubrís grandes verdades de unas personas que casi nunca son nombradas pero que, sin ellos, no podrían existir ni las series, ni las películas. En la lista de la derecha he incluido los blogs que yo suelo leer, para que aquellos que les interese, puedan acceder fácilmente a sus blogs.
