Before I write anything, I must give you a visual. This story takes place when I was a little tiny person of four years old. Here is a picture of me around that time.

My dad’s favorite band used to be AC/DC. If I couldn’t sleep, my dad would drive me around the neighborhood and put some AC/DC on the radio to get me to sleep. I became familiar with the tunes and decided that You Shook Me All Night Long was the best song.

One day, I stopped loving the song.
Not for reasons of my own, but from outside pressures. From adults. Adults never understand.

My mom dropped me off at daycare one day. I was doing my 4-year-old thing, and suddenly had the urge to break into song. So of course I started singing my favorite song, which says..

One of the daycare teachers heard this.

And promptly washed my mouth out with soap.

You’d think that it taught me to watch my mouth around adults, but it didn’t. A few years later in first grade I got in trouble for making a boy cry when he asked me on a date and I screamed across the playground “I would never go on a f***ing date with you ever!!!!”

Så blev det atter tid til en lille jam-session. Denne gang blev det i min fars garage (hvor sådan cirka alle store bands er begyndt – altså ikke i min fars garage men i en garage), og det gik faktisk skide godt. Setlisten bestod dog kun af “Knocking on Heaven’s door”, “You shook me all night long” og “Stand by me” (som vi nu må indrømme at vi hverken kan synge eller spille). “Knocking…” gik som den plejede, og jeg må tilstå at vi så småt er ved at have slutningen på plads. Trommerne og bassen skal lige koordineres, men det lyder da rigtigt, og så skal jeg lige kunne finde rundt i teksten (tænk at det kan være så svært??), men det store gennembrud i søndags var vores cover af AC/DC’s “You shook me…” som vi langt om længe kan spille ganske fornuftigt, men det helt store gennembrud var at vi nu også kan synge den. Vi valgte, at give sangen vores eget lille touch og bevægede os en smule væk fra originalen for at gøre den mere “vores egen” istedet for at forsøge at spille den som man hører på albummet. Næste skridt med sangen er blot at lære solo-stykket som stadig hjemsøger mig…

Anyways, vi er så småt begyndt at kigge efter nyt materiale og indtil videre vil vi kigge på George Thorogoods “Bad to the bone” (da den er sindssyg feee’ og sindssyg let – skal dog lige have fat i et slide til Mary Ann) og Status Quos “Caroline” som nok kræver en del øvning, på trods af kun 3 akkorder, men mere om det på et senere tidspunkt.

I was discussing a local pub with two good friends today via email. We are all very excited to visit the place as they handcraft their own brew. However, in planning our escapades some interesting side topics came up, which resulted in this string of thoughts

I used to really boogie to this one about 10 years ago and I’d dance for about 5 hours about 3 times a week at 3 different dance clubs. I had a lot of fun, after my divorce, going out and having a good time with the girls.

I avoided men for awhile and relationships, till I felt I was ready for some lovin. It was hard to start over again after being with someone for over 20 years, but it all worked out in the end.

Both of us ended up with someone more suitable. Each of us learned from our past mistakes, and we both have better relationships now.

Un algo que quizás deba de aprenderse antes en esta vida, pero se trata de ese tipo de cosas  que no piensas detenidamente hasta que te afectan de una manera más cercana: ¿Por qué esperar a la muerte para rendir homenaje?  Por ello decidí organizar una semana dedicada en exclusiva a una de las bandas más influyentes de la historia del Heavy Metal.

AC/DC fue creada en Sydney en 1973 por Malcolm Young (guitarra rítmica), diez años después de su llegada a Australia desde su Escocia natal junto con su familia, y tras desintegrarse la banda en la que había tocado hasta ese momento, The Velvet Underground —no confundir con la liderada por Lou Reed—. A su lado, Dave Evans (vocalista), Rob Bailey (bajo), Peter Clack (batería) y Angus Young, su hermano menor, como guitarrista principal. Esto último  no tendría que despertar mayor interés y admiración de no ser porque por aquel entonces éste contaba con tan sólo 15 años de edad. Acerca del origen de su legendario uniforme de colegial sobre el escenario —y tan legendario, exhibido en el Metropolitan Museum of Art de Nueva York—, muchas versiones. Desde que los ensayos de su primera banda coincidían con la salida del colegio y por ese motivo no tenía tiempo de cambiarse —entonces tenía 9 años—, pasando porque una profesora le decía que siempre sería un don nadie  y así él quiso que viera que se equivocó, o que fue un consejo de su hermana. Aquella primera formación —la misma que había tomado el nombre a partir de  la abreviatura de “alternating current/direct current” (corriente alterna/corriente continua) que podía leerse en una máquina de coser de Margaret, hermana de Malcolm y Angus— publicó un único sencillo, Can I Sit Next to You, producido por  el mayor de los Young, George, y  Harry Vanda —quienes posteriormente harían lo propio con algunos de sus discos a través de su discográfica Albert Records— y actuó por primera vez el 31 de diciembre en el Club Chequers.

Bon Scott y su fama de duros

Un año después se trasladaron a Melbourne e incorporaron al batería Philip Rudd y al bajista Mark Evans, además de un nuevo cantante tras la marcha de Dave a los Rabbit. Bon Scott, quien entre otras cosas había sido chófer de la banda y había formado parte de otras como The Valentines y Fraternity, ocupó la vacante. Un individuo que no logró alistarse en el ejército australiano por ser tachado de inadaptado social, y que cargaba con una serie de delitos menores a sus espaldas.

Con este reparto llegaron los dos primeros discos, High Voltage (1974) y T.N.T. (1975), ambos de Plata, Oro y Platino. Sin embargo, fue en el directo donde residía su mayor potencial. Unas puestas en escena sustentadas  sobre el magnetismo salvaje de Bon, sus ademanes chulescos, y la inverosímil actividad de Angus sobre el escenario, con ese hipnótico cabeceo a lo muñeco de salpicadero aderezado de cuando en cuando con el inconfundible paso del pato —popularizado antes por Chuck Berry—, que les convirtieron en poco tiempo en un grupo de referencia en su Australia adoptiva. Pero eso no era suficiente, había que conquistar el resto del mundo.

Buscando este objetivo se mudaron a Londres en 1976, desde donde publicaron una selección de sus dos primeros trabajos, de nuevo bajo el título High Voltage, el primer lanzamiento internacional de AC/DC al cual siguió Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap a finales de ese mismo año, así como la marcha de Mark Evans, cuyo puesto lo ocupó Cliff Williams. Pero el éxito absoluto en Gran Bretaña no lo alcanzó ninguno de ellos, aunque tampoco hubo que esperar mucho. De eso se encargó Let There Be Rock (1977), un hito en muchos sentidos: primer álbum de la banda publicado simultáneamente en diversos países, primero en incluir el logo tal y como lo conocemos hoy en día y primero en entrar en las listas estadounidenses. Precisamente fue Estados Unidos la siguiente meta. Tras Powerage (1978), la plaza americana cayó definitivamente ante el Rock contagioso de los hermanos Young en 1979 con el Platino Highway to Hell como ariete, su primer disco en vender el millón de unidades. Entonces, cuando ya podían afirmar sin temor a equivocarse que habían coronado la cima del mundo, cuando estaban en la cúspide de su carrera, la trágica muerte de Bon Scott les sorprendió irremediablemente el 19 de enero de 1980. Ocurrió en Londres después de una noche de alcohol y vómitos, el cantante tenía 33 años.

Dos meses más tarde un inglés llamado Brian Johnson, procedente de la banda Geordie —por cierto, del gusto de Bon— fue reclutado para ocupar el puesto de este último, y un mes después estaba encerrado en el estudio con sus nuevos compañeros para grabar el que sería su trabajo más vendido. Back in Black vendió 10 millones de unidades únicamente en Estados Unidos gracias a temas legandarios como You Shook Me All Night Long, Hells Bells, Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution o, cómo no, el  mismo con el cual compartía título. En cierto modo fue un tributo al malogrado vocalista, no explícitamente, pero el negro de su carátula y las campanas del citado Hells Bells no dejaban de ser muestras de luto. No obstante, Back in Black no coronó las listas norteamericanas, algo que sí logró su sucesor por primera vez en la carrera del grupo, For Those About to Rock, en 1981. Habían vuelto a la cima en un tiempo récord y pulverizaban sus propias marcas sin piedad.

En 1982 Phil Rudd fue sustituido por Simon Wright. A partir de entonces los australianos comenzaron a alternar algunos de sus directos más memorables, como los multitudinarios Castle Donington o Rock in Rio, con trabajos menos brillantes, Flick of the Switch primero y  Fly on the Wall después, hecho que arrastró su popularidad hasta el filo del abismo.

Tuvo que ser una colección de sus temas más representativos acompañados por otros inéditos, Who Made Who (1986), la que acudiera en su ayuda para romper con esa dinámica negativa.  Blow Up Your Video en 1988 y  The Razor’s Edge, recien estrenados los noventa (con el single Thunderstruck a la cabeza y un nuevo batería, Chris Slade, tras la marcha de Wright a DIO) siguieron esa línea, pero el éxito era otra historia. De eso se ocupó el Ballbreaker de 1995 producido por Rick Rubin, con Phil Rudd de vuelta y un listado con pistas como Hard as a Rock y The Furor.

¿Y después qué?

El siglo XXI trajo consigo su confirmación definitiva entre los más grandes de la historia, con los trabajos de estudio Stiff Upper Lip, número cuatro en 2000, y Black Ice, número uno en 2008, sin olvidar su entrada en el Rock and Roll Hall of Fame en 2003.  Malcolm, Angus, Brian, Cliff y Phil  no tienen que demostrar nada, el infierno se lo han ganado con creces.
