Winseman, published by Galuup Press, 2006.

“So if we believe the world is in need of the life-giving love of Jesus Christ, we’d better do everything we can not only to strengthen existing local congregations, but also to effectively plant new churches that meet the needs of and proclaim the Gospel to emerging generations.” p. 7.

The book centers around the concept of engagement and the importance of measuring it. He tells stories of the value of welcoming and hospitality and what happens when we as church are not. He offers a challenge to all church leaders and people in the pews to embrace the mission of hospitality if we want a vibrant and living Church in the future.

Certainly worth the read!

from MTV.com:

Slip on your Manolos and grab a Cosmo, girls, because the first “Sex and the City 2″ trailer is here! The nearly minute-and-a-half trailer reveals few plot points, but the sequel looks like another fun- and fashion-filled romp, centering around a girlfriend getaway to the desert.

The gal pals then hop on a plane and jet to the desert to “get carried far away,” which explains the foursome being spotted in Morocco back in November. Did we mention they ride camels? Oh my! After a back seat makeout between Carrie and Big, the trailer closes on the four friends wandering alone in the desert. “Sometimes you just have to get away with the girls,” SJP concludes.

So to sum up, the two big happenings in the sequel appear to be a wedding and a vacay. We’ll have to wait for another trailer to flesh out more of the story and to see a few of those star-studded cameos we’ve been hearing about like Miley Cyrus, Liza Minnelli and Penelope Cruz.

The trailer (see it after the jump!) opens with quick shots of New York City accompanied by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ seriously apropos hit “Empire State of Mind.” “It’s been two years and in two years, amazing things can happen,” purrs Sarah Jessica Parker. Cut to Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) sauntering down a Big Apple sidewalk, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) baking cupcakes with her 2-year-old daughter Rose and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) doing something at what appears to be a wedding (the rumored Stanford Blatch-Anthony Marantino nuptials, perhaps?).

This note was emailed to many this morning, but I believe we can reach more people and engage in better dialogue here… Feel free to add anyone (inside or outside of our current church community) whom you feel may be able to add some salt! (or pepper, even)

Everyone,
I’ve spent much time in recent months deeply in the desert of prayer. I love our church, its people, its mission… its hope. More than anything, I treasure the life giving transformation that happens so often there (my son finding true life, as the most shining example).

I’m sharing a few thoughts I’ve had that would provide a way for us to grow in the blessing of glorifying God through what we already have and do in slightly different ways, as well as a few simple new ways to bring Him glory and us to a more familial place.

The main point here is to begin a discussion with a larger community within our larger “C” Community and gather thoughts and possible volunteers to help us find the steps in our new dance with the Holy Spirit in the diaspora God blessed us with to bring us closer to him in these financially creative times.

Be blessed — in the freedom to know exactly who you are (and are not;-) in the hope and possibility of a God who loves us enough to call us to accountability.

Love,
heather

P.S. – I will help in whatever copy writing/editing may be necessary should any of these ideas move toward fulfillment. I trust that God will stretch my time as He so often has before…

CUMC showers amazing love & grace for those well-connected in the church. What of those on periphery, not sure how to get in? Do we have a volunteer base set up for helping them with funerals, like a funeral committee of sorts, to provide for their needs? Bringing lunch, helping with reception after the funeral, childcare, household help, food donations, etc.?

Art Gallery – With so many gifted artists in our faith community, and so much wall space, why are we not celebrating those gifts by hanging them for a month or quarter? (Understandably, given the economic situation, interested artists should pull together a plan for what they would like to showcase, where & plan to invest their own time in glorifying God by setting those on display themselves after gaining approval.)

Events around town section – to encourage our faith community to be present in the world outside of our church walls as a way to carry the gospel they seek to live into the lives of others by fellowshipping in the midst of life??

Website noodling:
Not just what we do at CUMC, but *why* we believe we are called to do it.

What do we aim to teach our children, young adults, varying adult classes? And why?

What are the classes studying now, or planning to study in the near future?

Major theological ideas we celebrate:
What are they??
(Baptism, reconciliation, communion, confirmation…)

What topics are covered?
Expectations participants should have
What it is that they are doing from a faith perspective, as in bringing their child forth for baptism
Expectations parents (if applicable) should have

My friend recently included me in a facebook dialogue that she started in order to think about how the church might better be the church. Her letter is below. This post will be long, but it is worth it and may turn into a series of posts. Comments are not only welcomed, but encouraged. : ) I pray any who read these words will show me much grace in putting them to paper as I seek to refine the chaos that is often my brain.

Well, I have no idea how much of this will apply, but below are my thoughts of in response to what is mentioned above. This is my first response kind of deal so there is not a great deal of refinement of these ideas at this point. Anyway, here ’tis:

I think you hit the nail on the head with childcare. While I don’t have children, I have heard about this dynamic from a few different places. It is frustrating for younger generations where both husband and wife work to be involved in the life and work of the church when there is no childcare available. I think it was a book I read named “Tribal Church” by Rev. Carol Howard Meritt who talked about a church (maybe hers?) where they had child care available whenever the doors were open for any church related “function” whether it is a meeting or a Bible study.

It seems to me that another area of frustration for both older and younger generations is the inclusion of young adults. In some circles, the young adults are included with the “youth” ministry. While there are definitely similarities in format and so on, the life issues that young adults deal with are significantly different. There are struggles on both sides for sure, but the young adults (and youth) aren’t just the future of the church, they are the church in the same way that the generations that have gone before them are. And they have a lot to share if they are invited not to the table of Christ as passive participants but as people whose thoughts and ideas are validated and put into practice as legitimate ministry ideas. Lack of experience doesn’t mean a lack of good ideas….it just means those ideas may need more support of those who have gone before them.

Something that has also given me food for thought are the niches of the community that are in need of more assistance. Groups that come to mind: – Single parents: offer free child care – People from other countries: offer classes on English idioms, etc. (these people are often much smarter than we give them credit for becuase they are not always able to put their thoughts into English as well as a mative speaker. But I often ask myself, “Self, can I speak their language?” The answer is always no unless it is French and even in that I am on a 3rd grade level (if that) so I respect anyone who is pursuing a career or education in a language that is not their native tongue.)

Those with developmental/physical disabilities: It seems to me that it is not just important that these folks are a part of the body of Christ in thought or ideal, but in reality and action. Are these folks attending your services? Are these folks invited to be integral members of committees and serving as deacons who pass the collection plates and assist with communion and other visible events? While many times we feel these folks are disadvantaged (even the term “disability” is not helpful though it is maybe a bit better than “handicapped”), the reality is that in many aspects they are probably much more equipped for ministry.

Talking about race – Do people in our church (whatever church that may be) feel comfortable talking about race and ethnicity? In an effort to make sure no one was offended, I feel as though I grew up ignoring differences so there was no possibility of offending anyone. This is not helpful. The language we use to talk about race and ethnicity is also not helpful. For those of us white folks, how many know what caucasian is? Most of us aren’t actually caucasian. Not are all of us white folks Anglos either to use another common word. The diversity of humanity is beyond any system of categorization that the IRS or anyone else comes up with. It seems to me that even if we are welcoming of others (whatever “other” is for each of us) in theory, if we aren’t comfortable talking about the differences in perception and aren’t willing to validate another persons way of doing something it is no longer about Christ. At this point it is about how we are doing something and this is stifling to the Spirit and the Body of Christ.

These thoughts both humble and challenge me. Their incompleteness is heartbreaking. And their lack of wings to fly into the face of the status quo are debilitating to me as well as the church.

Late last week, KT sent me a text asking if she could have a Christmas party on Monday. I thought about it for a moment then responded “Sure. What did you have in mind?” I didn’t think much of it when I didn’t hear back from her. I was busy and I knew we would have time to talk that evening. When I arrived home a couple hours later, KT gleefully told me that she had invited twenty five of her closest friends and sixteen had already committed to coming. Rather amused at KT’s neglect of discussing the party plans with me, I asked for more details. She informed me that they were all coming at 2:00, decorating cookies, playing games, watching Christmas movies and just hang out. Realizing that she had everything planned out, I just told her to let me know if she needed anything for me and watched her go.

Over the next few days I watched my girl (dragging her baby sister along for company) shop for tablecloths, extra white elephant gifts, cookie toppings and snacks. She looked up punch recipes and borrowed a punch bowl to put it in, she looked up gift-exchange games and bought prizes, she cleaned the house. The only thing she asked from me was to make cookie dough (which a couple of her friends would come early and help her bake) and frosting…oh and to lend her my debit card.

I’m currently hiding out in my room listening to the joyful laughter of approximately a zillion teens simply enjoying each others company. I’ve been coming out every once in a while…just to say hello…. to make a pizza run…to judge a cookie contest…for the most part I’ve just been giving them their space. I know most of these kids. Some since kindergarten, some just for a year or two. It struck me tonight, that they’ve all grown up. They aren’t kids anymore…heck, they don’t even look like kids anymore.

I have to admit that I cringed when KT turned 18 just over a week ago. She’s now legally an adult. I always thought that this would make me sad. This realization that our girls would grow up, become independent and leave us to make their own way in the world. Amazingly…it doesn’t. To my utter amazement, what I feel is not grief…but pride. I am so very proud of how well our children have turned out. After all, isn’t it the goal of every parent to raise a confident, independent child?

To think…all it took was a simple little party to make me realize this.

From the back of the book :

Seventeen-year-old Lila Beckwith’s parents just left for vacation, and Lila’s all set to throw the holiday party of the season. But when her Christmas-obsessed little brother, Cooper, discovers that global warming is melting the North Pole, he and his best friend, Tyler, take off on a runaway mission to save Santa.

Lila has to get Cooper safely home before her parents get back on Christmas Eve. But the only person who can help her is Tyler’s older brother, Beau — a.k.a. Lila’s musician, anti-everything ex-boyfriend.

It’ll take more than a Christmas miracle for Lila and Beau to overcome their differences and find their fugitive brothers. But could a journey destined for disaster help these polar opposites fall in love…all over again?

I’m supposed to be working on my last final right now, but I really wanted to write this review before Christmas (it is a Christmas book after all!)

There really isn’t much to say about Ex-Mas, except that it was a really cute story! It was exactly what I wished it to be : a fun romance with an holidays theme, a little humor and some “awww!” moments. While it didn’t reinvent the genre and was quite predictable, it was still entertaining enough to be a good read. I would describe it as a comfortable kind of predictable, and I really enjoyed it.

Cooper and Tyler were adorable, too, and I would have loved to hear their side of the story. I’m not sure how believable it is that those two little boys would get on a train and get this far all by themselves, but their quest to save Santa was such a sweet idea!

Brian’s writing was nice, too, all in simplicity. The pace felt just right, and reading the book was like watching a fun holidays movie – it’s also the perfect reading length to read on a snowy afternoon with a hot cup of cocoa!

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker and Miley Cyrus don’t appear onscreen together in “Sex and the City 2,” in theaters next year, but Parker did spend enough time on set with the 17-year-old singer/actress to learn one big thing about her: She’s a rather tall girl.

“I had very little [time] with Miley, but I was astounded by her height,” Parker told MTV News while promoting her flick, “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” “Did you know that she’s tall? She’s like a Viking. I had no idea!”

And while Cyrus filmed her brief cameo as herself for “SATC 2,” Parker noticed that the teen’s stature (which much be higher than her last reported 5-foot-4) was matched by her professional attitude.

“She’s a beautiful young lady and very self-possessed,” she said. “I literally was not in the scene with her. I was in the scene, but we were not [onscreen] together. But she was lovely and on time and prompt and professional, very sweet. She worked two hours and she was in and out.”

Someone who may or may not be in and out of the flick is John Corbett, who was spotted in Morocco around the same time “SATC 2″ was on location there. Parker said she “can’t confirm nor deny” that her former co-star, who played Aiden on the show, is in the movie. “It might have just been coincidental that he was traveling,” she said cryptically.

“I can confirm that there is no Jennifer Hudson,” she added of the singer who played Carrie’s assistant in the first movie.

Parker said the sequel is intended to be a lighthearted “caper,” unlike the first movie, which took a dark turn when Big got cold feet at his wedding to Carrie. “It had a lot of sadness in it,” she said. “It was bleak — intentionally so — and I thought rather bold.

“And this is really like the antidote, [like those] black-and-white road movies, or that’s what we hope,” she added. “We’re hoping that it’s fun and light. It feels like a soufflé. We’ve traveled a great distance to film it, and I think we have beautiful cinematic images and pictures, and I think everybody else is really good in it. I’m probably not, but I’ve enjoyed doing it.”

Sturman Jewelry may not yet be a household name, however should the pieces that were sent to the set of the newest Sex in the City movie make final cut that should change. Nothing seems to stamp an item as a “must have” faster then when it is seen adorning Carrie or one of her closest friends on their glamorous romp through life . The fictitious foursome have become a hallmark of what constitutes high end fashion.

It was exciting to learn that not all the pieces selected for the movie, and possibly destined for stardom themselves, are already part of the fashion elite’s wardrobe. This New York City based jewelry designer uses a collection of unique pearls, stones, beads and vintage pieces, includingSwarovski cabochons and blown glass to create the unusual items in her collection. A stand out piece features Swarovski stones ordered by Christian Dior prior to World War II. Inspired by the colors, shapes and textures of the raw materials the designer painstaking crochets or weaves each piece in her New York City Studio.

The designer Peggy Sturman has a background in art history and floral design which is easily seen in her work. Will she be the next “it” girl of the fashion industry? Only time will tell, but Carrie and the girls could certainly give her a leg up. All the pieces featured above and in the gallery are currently on the set of the new movie.

Sex And The City 2: Morocco The six week Moroccan shoot for Sex and the City 2 is well underway. We got all the girls looking fabulous as they shoot airport scenes as well as Sarah Jessica Parker with her nose buried deep in a book. We don’t want to start any rumors or spoil anything, but the pink frock that SJP is sporting could be hiding a little sumptin’ sumptin’. Carrie doesn’t usually sport such loose fitting wear. So could it be true? Is there a little ‘Big’ on the horizon?
