The podcasts will consist of decent music we hope the rest of The Community will enjoy with a minimal amount of commentary thrown in on the side. We plan on mixing up the jam selection pretty good. Here’s another round of some De La Soul samples – this time off of their second album De La Soul is Dead. I just came across the sample set for this album the other week and it’s filled with goodies – almost too many. I plan on doing a longer post with a bunch of em’ but for now here are a few cuts that make up their diddy – A Roller Skating Jam Named ‘Saturdays’. There are actually 6 songs they pull from but figured nobody would want to listen to the Theme Song from Grease: The Musical.

Great song here with some very strong lyrics but I couldn’t find them on the internet and I don’t have time to type them out so you will just have to listen…

Ain’t There Something That Money Can’t Buy – Young-Holt Unlimited…

A few days ago, I was involved in a conversation with a friend. The conversation was originally about the Latin Blues Band; but, eventually the topic became the tune “Soulful Strut”. For those who do not know the song, you probably do. The song has about 5 incarnations including the instrumental version that Young Holt Unlimited (former members of Ramsey Lewis’s trio) recored and released in 1968. About a year later, a version that Barbara Acklin recorded as “Am I the same Girl” was release with lyrics written by her husband, a member of the Chi-Lites. This was than covered by Dusty Springfield. In the late 1990’s Grover Washington recorded a version of “Soulful Strut.” In the early 1990′2 English group Swingout Sister again covered the song in its lyrical form. The song showed up about 20 years later as a sample on the Joss Stone album Mind, Body and Soul.

Phew…that was a lot. BUT, I am not done. The word strut and its concept is a common one in soul/jazz/R&B. The meters have TWO strut songs, Cissy Strut was one of their first hits, and later Chicken Strut with its great plucky guitar. These tunes have themselves also been covered multiple times. The term strut also appears in the classic Stray Cats tune, Stray Cat Strut…I have also included Bob Segar’s ode to the strut and the Cheetah Girls. These latter were included for the theme…and certainly not because they are good.

And the list goes on.

This week let’s get a little more funky with our instrumentals. “Soulful Strut” was the instrumental track for “Am I The Same Girl” by Barbara Acklin and it is soulful and funky for sure!

“Am I The Same Girl” is a popular soul song, written in 1968 for American soul singer Barbara Acklin by her husband, Eugene Record, lead singer of the Chi-Lites, and Sonny Sanders. Acklin’s label, Brunswick Records, first released the song in the autumn of 1968 as an instrumental track without her vocals, entitled “Soulful Strut” and credited to Brunswick soul-jazz combo Young-Holt Unlimited. “Soulful Strut” became a Top 5 hit in the United States, while Acklin’s vocal version, released in the winter of 1969, was not as successful. This album is one of the first cassette tapes that I ever bought. I have always been slow to change. By the time I left vinyl for 8-tracks, cassettes were already on the scene, but I was slow to get on board. This one came in a black plastic case (early cases were in opaque colors of black,white or red before the clear plastic cases came into vogue) and the label peeled off soon after purchase, so I had to scotch tape it on. Forty years later I still have that tape and play it once in a while since I haven’t gotten a digital version of the entire album yet.

In addition to “Soulful Strut” other tracks on the album include “Funky Is As Funky Does”, “Baby Your Light Is Out”, “Who’s Making Love”, “Ain’t There Something Money Can’t Buy?”, “Be By My Side”, and “Please Sunrise”. You can’t go wrong adding this one to your musical collection.

The musicians of Chicago’s Young-Holt Unlimited, who first came into the public eye as members of Ramsey Lewis’ first Trio, have an interesting musical history that you can read all about, both, here and here.
