Back in May 2006 I went to go and see The Rakes for the first time at the Shepherds Bush Empire. I’d recently picked up their debut album Capture/Release, and as I thoroughly enjoyed it I decided to go see them live. They had two support bands, the On-Offs (who seem to have split up not that long afterwards, going by my brief internet search) and the Young Knives. I’d not heard much about the Young Knives prior to this gig, but I liked them and ended up getting a couple of their albums and stuff.

Fast forward over three years and a lot has changed. The Rakes are on album number three, with their second album not being as good as their first and their third album not being as good as their second, and as they’re falling slightly out of favour they seem to have found themselves supporting their former support band, Young Knives (they had the “The” surgically removed in time for their second album).

It was all in a good cause though, so it’s not all that bad for them. Transgressive Records is five years old this September, and to celebrate this anniversary some gigs have been announced to showcase some of their biggest artists. OK, so the pedantic amongst you may be able to spot that the Rakes aren’t on Transgressive and never have been, but they released a single ages ago with some help from a Transgressive bloke or something, so they kind of count. Plus Esser, who is on Transgressive, was supposed to be playing this gig but is too busy playing in America to bother. I don’t like Esser, but I like the Rakes. A good substitution if you ask me.

I did miss the first couple of songs of the Rakes’ set, but the most notable thing about the songs I did catch was the amount that they pulled from their first album. Binary Love, Violent, 22 Grand Job and Strasbourg were squeezed in, while second album opener The World Was A Mess But His Hair Was Perfect (which was written around the same time as their first album I believe) was the only song to appear from their middle album, Ten New Messages. Klang, their fairly ropey recent record, was represented by fairly good single 1989 and something else I can’t remember, which shows how interested I was. I wonder if they have realised how much better their original stuff is, hence the setlist? Anyway, they were good, singer Alan was his usual exuberant self with crazy dance moves aplenty, and for a support band they were pretty excellent. Fingers crossed for a better fourth album though, so they don’t have to be an excellent support band.

Young Knives were the main attraction tonight though, and they managed to rise to the occasion with a “hits” filled setlist that was chosen by you, the person on the internet. They did a poll thing on the Transgressive website where you could vote for them to play any of their songs, from top 40 chart (by two places) hit She’s Attracted To to a wealth of b-sides and rarities. Thankfully the former type of song was the dominate force, as I’m not enough of a fan to want to see them perform 12 b-sides, but a couple of lesser known and new songs did get thrown in. My choice in the poll was Turn Tail, not just because it’s a good song but also because it wasn’t that high in the top ten choices, so I wanted to guarantee it getting through. No point in wasting a vote on something that’s top already, was there?

It’s hard to pick a particular highlight as most songs were consistently good. She’s Attracted To was extended to at least twice its original length, about half of that repeating the “you were screaming at your mum and I was punching your dad!” line, and Terra Firma is always a pleasure. The two new songs also sounded good, although I can’t remember anything about them whatsoever. They were still cut from the same Young Knives cloth as their previous work, which bodes well for their forthcoming third album, which I’m sure will turn up one of these days.

All in all it was a high quality gig. Not often you get two solidly good bands on the same night’s lineup, but when you do it’s something that’s very easy to enjoy. Hopefully tomorrow’s second Transgressive birthday gig, headlined by Foals, will be equally as enjoyable.

Hello! I am testing out this new blag of mine. My Lame Boyfriend, Ryan, set this up unbeknownst to m

Hello!

I am testing out this new blag of mine. My Lame Boyfriend, Ryan, set this up unbeknownst to me, in my name, and wrote out several amusing entries, of which I have deleted all but one, which is a list of his various shortcomings. As he stated, it is clearly incomplete, but I have left it there as a good starting point. He’s smelly and beats me up and is generally a bad lot, yes. But he also likes to make me cry, never answers his phone, does impressions of me in a really lame voice that sounds nothing like me, and spends far too much time talking about geeky things, for example.

He does have some redeeming qualities, though. We’ll cover them later, as and when they rear their heads. Oh yes – he splashes his cash on me and came to see me yesterday even though he’s megabiz with revision. Thanks, Ryan. Thyan.

Anyho, at some stage, he and I hope to launch our own web-domain. Maybe quite soon, I don’t know. I’m very out of the habit of any of this online journal writing lark though, so this page has been set up as a practice. I will fill it with rants, great ideas, amusing anecdotes, links, pictures, lots of boring mumbles and whatever else takes my fancy. Hooray!

So today I have been chilling in the sun (paradox?), nearing the conclusion of ‘The Romance of the Forest’ (a Gothic novel), pissing about on the net, and eating far too much: salt and vinegar sticks, a sizeable bowl of potato salad (Andrea’s-mum-stylee) and an ice cream cone (complete with ice cream). Yesterday saw more ice cream, plus pizza and garlic bread. There’s plenty of fruit, salad & veg going in too, but it doesn’t really negate the indulgence. I must knuckle down to my healthy-eating diet thing and not take every weekend off. Still plenty of wobble to get rid of. It all tasted very nice, though, I must say. Back to the lentils tomorrow.

I spent the rest of the weekend with my man. He surprised me on Friday afternoon by appearing much earlier than expected when I thought he’d barely be out of lessons. I was fiddling with my hair, sans make-up, and singing along badly to the Cold War Kids or something and Dad let him sneak in through the garage like a ninja. ‘Twas very nice and I was pleased I did get to see him, even if only for a day. He stayed until Saturday evening after all so we had just over 24 hours to luxuriate together. I hope he has been getting on okay with his deadly revision.

Recently I have been listening way too much to the Young Knives. I’m not sure why, I guess it’s because they’re catchy. I think I’ve exhausted them for now though. They did go straight in at number 10 on my last.fm, however. I especially like ‘Turn Tail’ and ‘Half Timer’ although the latter isn’t strictly a song, more a humorous interlude. They also seem very funny blokes, in interviews and music videos, which is part of the appeal. It’s good to see people having fun and not taking everything too seriously, for a change. In other musical news I recently found a weirdo band named Man Man, to whom I can’t really compare anyone but that’s a good thing. Crazy stuff. Oh and Lightspeed Champion, never got round to listening to him/them till recently – sounds quite good. No gigs on the agenda – must change that, not that I can afford to go to any. ‘Tis nearly a year since Ryan and I went and stood in the front row of MBV, in front of the towering stack of speakers that blasted 129 decibels of white noise at us. (I still haven’t developed the disposable camera pics!) Which means it was this time last year I was ailing with glandular fever, feeling like mould warmed up then frozen then overheated again, and getting zero sleep. Ugh. Speaking of gigs, Mum went to see QI being made on Thursday, which sounds awesome – and free! (except train fare, obv, and you have to get there in good time to get a seat) I’d like to do that some time.

I think that will do. This was me getting to grips with ‘blogging’, a word I cringe to write. I’ll try to get better at it. Oh, do you like my layout? It was a toss-up between this and ‘Quentin’ which looks like an old-school manuscript (awesome) but I wasn’t so keen on the side bar stuff. I’ve spent a while today playing with the settings so I hope it’s all right. I’d quite like to be able to change some of the colours and fonts though. Never mind.

Byeziebye.

Oh, I’m Catbob, by the way. Or Catherine, Cat, Lady Catherine, Dollface or whatever groovy nickname you wish to call me.

By Lauren Crooks

AT least five children under the age of ten have been caught carrying knives on Scotland’s streets in the past year.

Shocking figures revealed two eight-year-old kids and three nine-year-olds were charged after cops found them with blades in Edinburgh.

And two 11-year-old children were also charged after having the weapons in the capital.

The numbers for the whole of Scotland are likely to be much higher – with the capital alone reaching a five year high on youths being charged.

Last year, 31 youths were charged with possession of a knife – compared to just 12 in 2004.

Politicians and parents’ groups have blasted the worrying figures, released under Freedom of Information laws.

They say it is unacceptable that the message about the dangers of carrying a knife has still not hit home with young people.

Liz Smith MSP, the Tories’ schools spokeswoman, believes that schools need to be given more power to deal with the problem.

She said: “Head teachers should have powers to search for weapons if they suspect a child has come into school carrying a weapon and they should be able to take action to isolate that child.”

But Tina Woolnough, chairwoman of Parents in Partnership, said there needed to be a shake-up in the way children were educated about knife crime.

She said: “At school, children learn about keeping themselves safe and healthy and I think information about knives should be included in the standard package.

“By high school I would have a zero-tolerance policy on carrying knives.”

A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: “We’re working with the experts in our national Violence Reduction Unit and police forces on tough enforcement to take weapons off the streets.”

Police chiefs say the rise in the number of youths being caught is a reflection of the force’s crackdown on the problem, which includes searching on city buses.

Officers also believe that increased awareness may be leading children to report their classmates when they know they have a bladed weapon.

A police spokesman said: “We are committed to engaging with young people as early as possible to illustrate the dangers connected with drugs and violent crime.

“The rise in the number of youths being caught highlights our dedication to tackling crimes of this nature.”

The figures also revealed a drop in the number of under-16s caught with offensive weapons for 2008.

A total of 28 were caught last year compared with 54 in 2007 and 85 in 2006 – including two six-year-olds.

The judging panel chose four winners (our fifth and final entry was chosen by the British public via our People’s Choice voting system) who have been offered the opportunity to be mentored by filmmakers Noel Clarke, Shynola, Saam Farahmand, Kinga Burza, Jim Therapleton and Paul Andrew Williams plus soundtrack’s to their films provided courtesy of Metronomy, Shy Child, Chipmunk, The Thirst, Young Knives and Jesca Hoop.

Summaries of the winning treatments are as follows:

Ben Newman – War School

Opting for a short based around war + peace, Ben Newman, has come up with one of the most popular entries, gaining praise across the board by looking to re-create a military training camp for child soldiers in a British school. It was described by Riz Ahmed as “a great idea, simple, communicating a direct message.”

Fern Berresford – Man Made

This two-minute short, based around gender + power tackles the treatment of women as property and the lack of self worth and identity women feel due to lack of education and the gender inequalities prevalent in many societies.

Joe Patrick – HIV: The Musical

The main aim of Patrick’s film is to expose the ridiculous attitudes towards HIV and Aids. A series of video blogs posted by a young playwright, James McKenzie, whose artistic integrity is being challenged by the ignorance of a film company determined to hijack his script.

Tim Travers Hawkins – A Thousand Voices

A verbose and politically correct bureaucrat gives a lecture to a group of teenagers on the merits of the UK”s efficient and humane asylum system, whilst meanwhile, in the same building, detainees, imprisoned indefinitely in different !Removal Centres” across the UK, leave messages in vain on an abandoned telephone answering machine in the ministry basement. Their messages detail the horror of the life that they have escaped due to conflict.

Alexandra Monro + Sheila Menon – No Way Through

This short film will highlight mobility restrictions imposed by governments (especially countries in war zones) that limit access to health care, thus violating their right to the fundamental human right of medical care.

I’ve been listening to Everything Everything obsessively for a couple of weeks now and I haven’t grown tired of them in the least. They combine a number of admirable traits: high energy, clever lyrics and close harmony. They remind me of Maximo Park, Young Knives and the Futureheads – all very good things.

I love their DIY approach to video, as seen in “Photoshop Handsome”:

Videos are all well and good, but it’s how they perform live that really matters. If this is anything to go by, they must be pretty amazing:

Everything Everything are playing the Lexington in London on Tuesday the 17th of March. Absolutely gutted I can’t go: I’m flying out of the country that very day. Only one London date? Come on, guys, help me out here – I want to give you my money, I really do…

I have more British Alternative praise for you all.

Not a full review, but enough to get you going on this next group; Foals. These Oxford guys are a great emerging band who shows they are no young kin. This past year has seen them release their debut album “Antidotes”. Produced by TV On The Radio guitarist, Dave Sitek, this album is brilliant, lots of great Britpop noise, with the accompaniment of catchy horns. This album is quite lengthy, around fifty minutes, letting you really get the gist of Foals quirky, guitar driven music. This music can really make you move and somewhat reminds me of the sound of The Young Knives. They have been around for a mere three years, however these guys have enough to break through and open for Bloc Party.

Antidotes

“Antidotes” has a great sound and Foals continue to release singles. Songs like “Cassius” and “Balloons” are very radio friendly, pop friendly for sure. Very catchy choruses are effective and theses guys do a great way to sound like bands like fellow tour mates Bloc Party, and previously mentioned, The Young Knives.

Foals have also been acclaimed for their release of their debut record, reaching #3 on the U.K. charts, along with receiving recognition for one of the best albums of 2008, on magazines such as Q. Recently; the guys have said they are back in the studio recording their second record, something to really look forward to. Keep and eye out for these guys in the future, their simplistic dance-punk sound will not go to waste.

Os pontos altos foram justamente as músicas mais melódicas, como “Up All Night” e “She’Attracted To”.

Music festivals, as the mainstay of the revelrous masses, have come a long way in the last five year

Music festivals, as the mainstay of the revelrous masses, have come a long way in the last five years. The well-worn formula of a long weekend dedicated to rural rebelliousness of the most extreme and exhausting variety has become pummelled, condensed and morphed into newly enticing manifestations. One such variety, the urban one-day event, has become vastly popular, this year especially, as a way of getting some of the best in new and smaller acts onto a festival bill for just a fraction of typical prices for the punter.

Airwaves is but one example of the one-day festivals that have emerged in this climate of live music diversification. Planned to celebrate the ten year anniversary of Iceland’s veteran Airwaves Festival, which has featured a range of high-calibre headline acts including everyone from Klaxons to The Kills, Airwaves branded itself as ‘an all-day extravaganza of cutting-edge music and culture’. But the reality of the event was somewhat different. Plagued with entry queues, schedule-clashes and street-level congestion, most ticket-holders were left feeling more than a little frustrated at a line-up that promised top-end entertainment, without much regard for the practicalities involved.

Even for those who managed to rock up straight from work, the eight venues earmarked for the night stretched right across London’s trendy East End – from Hoxton to Brick Lane – a fair distance on foot. Gigwise spoke to one girl who, in a fix about to get from Metronomy’s 9.30pm set at Hoxton Bar and Grill to Young Knives at Vibe in Brick Lane by 11pm, jumped in a taxi, only to find herself paying an extortionate £18 fare at the end of the five minute drive. For newcomers to the East End the risk of getting lost in a back lane and missing nearly every act on the bill was a very real possibility.

As such, gig-goers found themselves pigeon-holed into one or two similarly-located venues. For Gigwise, this meant missing the illuminated electro-pop innovation of Metronomy and the entrancing sequenced electronica of A. Human so that we were in the right place to see Young Knives at 11pm, which rather unfortunately meant suffering the poker-faced pouting of These New Puritans for a good half a set. Their heavily punctuated art-rock was lost on the dingy confines of the upstairs at Vibe, where clean lines of sound blurred and fuzzed into the humid central space of the sparsely populated venue, rendering the set messy-sounding and underwhelming.

The same sound issues plagued Young Knives’ subsequent set. With a band like Young Knives, however, personality alone is enough to counter technical imperfections. The unlikely-looking trio, done up in an assortment of clownishly large trousers, oversized specs and handlebar moustaches, played a set of overdone enthusiasm and unpretentious, commercial hooks and harmonies that induced a sudden bout of joyous, if not slightly odd, dancing on the floor. Between songs, lead vocalist Harry Darthall spouted comedic one-liners of varying profanity, at one point declaring, “The only fucking reason we’re here is because we get to go to Iceland –we’ll send you a postcard!” But their live set belied their proclaimed apathy, characterised largely by monosyllabic staccato nonsense held together by impeccable rhythm. They ended on a cacophonous blend of vocal and distorted guitar that was somewhat lost on the Shoreditch audience, who, in various states of inebriation, was only vaguely listening.

Last minute line-up addition, Digitalism, raised the festival spirit of the evening with their DJ set opposite, at 93 Feet East. The venue was soon bulging at the exits as people squeezed their way onto the dancefloor, overspilling onto the main stage and infesting tables and chairs in a jubilant and unrestrained display of nocturnal festivity. Musically, though, Digitalism offered little by way of interest, instead choosing to utilise their undoubted talent to mix crowd-pleasing fodder like Run D.M.C. and Nirvana into more enticing digital dance-numbers. It went down well, but critically did little but cement Digitalism as the poor man’s Justice in the electro pecking order.

For those still standing at the witching hour, there was little to do but trek to Hewitt Street carpark for an organised rave. Organised being the operative word, as kids queued in their fancy outfits to get through the barriers, queued for drinks tokens, queued for drinks, and then sat huddled in corners by corrugated metal fences, looking fashionably bored. We took the safer option, and headed for home.

On paper Airwaves and its urban festival cousins look like the ideal way of getting new music out to the consuming masses in one dense evening line-up. But in practice, the implications of switching venues eight times in a night to see just a fraction of what’s on offer left most punters wishing they’d spent their twenty quid on a proper gig, instead. Unlike Young Knives, we didn’t even get a trip to Iceland for the trouble…
