Ken

If you got some spare time, you should check out this funny website.

The site’s been around for quite a while, but recently it’s been updated by its talented owner Rob Dobi. He’s designed for the likes of Fall Out Boy, Thursday, New Found Glory and many more.

Just browsing the site, it makes you think some of the silly fashion trends that are linked with certain music genre. You might be having a chuckle at some of these stereotypes, but the truth is music and fashion go hand in hand, like umm Cristiano Ronaldo and twatness. When there’s a music genre, they’ll be a ’scene’ with its own unique spin on fashion. Heck, I’ll even bet everybody’s had a music related fashion faux pas… I must remember to banish my nu-metal three-quarter length trousers to the history books once and for all.

By the way, what the hell is a juggalo clown? Must be an American thing, don’t think I seen one of these walking in Camden Town…

Juggalo

Typically, I find the internet is really boring. But it’s better than doing actual work. I usually surf when I’m at work, hoping to find something to beat the boredom. I usually have a ritual every day. It goes a little something like this:

1) check my email, and usually i have spam from Amazon offering a 50$ gift card for purchases over 400$. Or an email saying i can get a degree to find my dream job.

2) Blogs, (gunsmokemafia, hiphopdx, kanye’s blog, neatorama, popgive, dvice, etc) That’s probably the highlight of my day right there.

3) Wikipedia: I find this is probably the best way to waste 20-30mins. I’ll search up a random subject i’m interested in, usually astronomy or evolution. Then i’ll start linking to similar, related topics. For example, yesterday i was reading about Nasa’s Kepler telescope that they are going to launch in March. It’s only mission, to monitor 100,000 stars in a region of our milky way galaxy, and detect if there are any planets orbiting those stars. I think that’s pretty cool. hopefully we can find aliens.

4) Naptime: Wikipedia usually precedes my nap time when i fall asleep at my desk around…3:30? Its alway an hour or two after lunch, and it’s always an hour or two before i leave for the day. It’s the perfect time because the rest of the office is quiet. I have a corner desk, which is good and bad. It’s bad because people can see my monitor(s). But it’s good because no one can see my face, especially if i put on my hood. I usually open up a large text document or webpage (i.e, wikipedia) and keep my hand on the mouse as i gently drift to sleep.

That was just a little insight into my day, I really hope my co-workers never read this. Anyways, here’s a funny ass site called yourscenesucks.com

Just scroll through the different ’scenes’ and see how they break it down to a science. This one is one of my favourite. Enjoy!

Everybody Hurts: An Essential Guide to Emo Culture by Leslie Simon and Trevor Kelley I first heard o

Everybody Hurts: An Essential Guide to Emo Culture
by Leslie Simon and Trevor Kelley

I first heard of this book because Rob Dobi does the illustrations, and I am absolutely in love with everything Rob Dobi does (see Your Scene Sucks for starters). A book on emo? Why would I read that? Why would I have spent most of my adolescence fighting the label emo and emokids if only to turn around and read a guide to emo? Thankfully, growing up has caused me to evolve past my “more punk than thou” attitude and open my mind to other genres of music… and to self-reflection that has led to the inevitable conclusion. I am emo.

Some reasons why are as follows:
- I am obsessed with Thrice (who, only 13 pages in, have already been referenced twice)
- I believe that lyrics are the words that will save us all and spend an unhealthy amount of time devoted to researching and understanding them
- I recognize literary references in most of my favourite songs (and have read the works said songs refer to)
- Artists just understand me

Back to the book. I do find there are a few misses with the humour and a bit too much repetition of certain points and references. But all in all it’s a hilarious tongue-in-cheek look at a culture that seems like everything when you’re in it, but that is neither something to be ashamed of nor any less valid when you look back as you grow older and are removed from “the scene” (no matter how slightly). Nothing makes you more genuine than being able to recognize things about yourself and accepting them, rather than getting mad because someone called you emo and then going home and writing a tearful LiveJournal entry about it later so complete strangers can understand how you feel.

At the end of the day, it’s about not taking yourself too seriously and being able to laugh at the silly things we all do, no matter what genre they may fall into. Just go read the book.

I know, it is of poor taste to post two things on the same topic or the same subject, but perhaps it led to inspiration. I concede that sometimes what must be done has to be done and today I posted two posts on the same subject.

While reading the news on the political soap opera that is the United States Presidential Election, I was reading the much controversial (and sometimes reviled) webnewsblog, the Huffington Post, when I came across this little peppy article that holds much contempt to the hipster fashion scene. The writer of this article, Verena von Pfetten, does correlate some interesting celebrity and pop culture figures with the hipster fashion trends to make her points. Read the article here.

But hey, it’s all fun and games, we wear what we want to wear because we want wear them to right? We wear what we wear to rage against the machine! However, a graphic designer named Rob Dobi (who has infamously designed work for such talent-heavy bands like the Used (ugh), Angels and Airwaves (gross) and Fall Out Boys (no comment), but has more recently invested his time into his clothing line Full Bleed) is a talented artist and his work has been featured on various record companies and magazines.

However, he redeemed himself and in turned washed his hands of his interactions with Fall Out Boy in my eyes with this entertaining website called yourscenesucks.com, which is basically a scientific, anthropological look at the scenster lifestyle. Here’s a few examples, but really, check out the site you should get a guffaw, grin, chuckle or a harty har har out of it.

). Und ich kann ihm da 100%-

Das sagt Rob Dobi ( Illustrator, Platten Cover Designer, Fotograf, etc. ).
