Discover 10 superfoods that won’t break your wallet or expand your waistline.

It can be hard to eat healthy. Fresh, real food often costs much more than processed junk food. After all, almost every fast food place has a value menu these days – often offering food for a buck or less. But eating for your wallet doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your waistline. Here are ten superfoods for under $1.

1. Beans – Beans are packed with fiber to lower cholesterol and keep you full. Beans are inexpensive and versatile. Try replacing the meat in tacos with black beans and check out the difference in your waistline and in your wallet.

2. Broccoli – Talk about a superfood. Broccoli contains tons of vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin C and Vitamin A, which can help improve eyesight. At under $1 a bunch, it’s a great way of getting fiber to keep you full without emptying your pocketbook.

3. Oats – Whole grains like oats make the superfoods list because they are chock full of good fiber to help lower cholesterol and keep the stomach full. Single-serving packets of oatmeal or other whole-grain cereals cost under $1 and are a healthy choice for breakfast.

4. Oranges – Everyone knows that oranges are a source of Vitamin C. But when eaten whole instead of juiced, they also contain lots of fiber. Oranges are a great portable snack as well, especially when you consider that a single orange may be cheaper than a bag of chips from the vending machine – and much better for you.

5. Spinach – There’s a reason Popeye always ate his spinach. Spinach is full of vitamins, fiber, and iron. Fresh spinach can be costly, but frozen spinach is one of the best values in the supermarket. A box of frozen spinach usually contains over a pound of spinach, condensed into a smaller package with a much smaller price tag.

6. Green tea – While not technically a “food,” green tea has many of the nutrients our bodies need. Green tea is healthier than black tea because it hasn’t been as processed, meaning more of the good stuff actually makes it into your mug. Green tea is sold in a huge variety of flavors and packages, so it’s easy to find for under $1.

7. Almonds – Nuts sometimes get a bad rap because of their high calorie content. But in small doses, nuts are a source of healthy fats, proteins, and antioxidants. Almonds can easily be found in supermarkets and even convenience stores in single-serving packets for under $1.

8. Yogurt – Low-fat or fat-free plain yogurt is a great way to get calcium in your diet. Plus it often contains other needed nutrients, like protein and potassium. Just stick with the plain variety to avoid added sugar. At under $1 per serving, yogurt is an easy way to be healthy and thrifty.

9. Dark chocolate – It’s not a license to eat candy bars all day long, but the antioxidants found in dark chocolate are a good choice for when the craving for something sweet hits. Dark chocolate contains a high percentage of cocoa, which can lower blood pressure. Single pieces of dark chocolate can be found at almost any store for much less than $1.

10. Eggs – Eggs are sometimes considered the perfect food. They are packed with vitamins and minerals and they come in their own portable carrying case. A full dozen can often be found for under a dollar, making eggs one of the best values in the grocery store.
