TheSaiko.com

You know YouTube to be the place where you indulge yourself by watching pointless and pirated videos. But after today, you’ll know YouTube as the video site outfitted with Google Analytics for brand channels. For those of you that are not techie super dorks like The Saiko, analytics are a major leap forward for YouTube because they provide data on how people are interacting with the videos. That information is worth its weight in gold for advertisers.

Up until now, the only data brands and users could scrape from their videos were to use YouTube Insight. Insight was able to provide basic data like:

basic demographic data

track the video’s global popularity

how it’s been rated by others

Don’t get us wrong. That is better than nothing, but Google Analytics is going to supercharge the video experience for people that post. Here’s the catch, however: What in the hell are you going to do with the data once you get it? This is where most organizations/advertisers drop the ball. But before you beat yourself up for your lack of skills with data, let’s take a look at what Google Analytics is going to bring to the table:

track how long visitors stay

repeat visits

page views

bounce rate

geo-locating viewers

identify the language the viewer speaks

Sure this sounds like a great feature for advertisers, but is it relevant for people that just post videos because they want to share their stupid pet tricks with the world? Yes, if that person has interest in monetizing the 1.4 million views they got for their “watch my goldfish play poker” video. We’re going to wait and see if this is something that picks up with the average viewer. We hope so.

I’ve posted on various aspects of YouTube Insight in the past but a couple recent videos from Katie over at Before & After TV caught my attention. Launched about a year ago, YouTube Insight is one of the best free video analytics tools out there.

Check out the videos below for a quick, comprehensive overview of Insight as well as YouTube’s Audioswap tool. YouTube still has a lot of work to do with Audioswap as no decent videographer or producer would take this approach to incorporating music into a video. Alas, it’s a good foundation for amateur videographers looking for pre-approved licensed music.

Thanks Katie!

No campaign before Barack Obama’s has been so innovative in using the internet to reach out to

No campaign before Barack Obama’s has been so innovative in using the internet to reach out to voters. The current increase in involvement of younger voters was successful largely because of social networking sites such as YouTube.

Barack Obama’s YouTube account has 168, 685 subscribers. The channel includes a variety of public appearances by the President and first Lady as well as videos of the campaign trail. Barack Obama has also replaced the weekly radio address with the weekly video address via YouTube.

Although the President’s YouTube Channel manages to reach a variety of audiences, the majority seems to reach the younger population.

The video below is the most viewed video on Barack Obama’s YouTube Channel with over seven million views.

To enhance the ability to promote using online videos, YouTube released a new tool for online promoters called YouTube Insight last year. This is a tool that tracks what days your viewers tuned in, where they are located and how long they watched, among many other functions that allow advertisers and public relations agents to improve their campaigns.

You can find the function by going to My Account> Videos, Favorites, Playlists > Manage my Videos.

Below is a short video describing the Insight Tool.

YouTube also has a sponsored videos option that works very similar to Google Adwords. Advertisers can bid on keywords and have their video show up in search results. The sponsored ads show up on the right hand side, similar to the placement of ads in Google Adwords.

Like Google Adwords, advertisers are able to set daily budgets and they only pay-per-click and there is no cost for the ad just being displayed in search results. Advertisers can benefit because although users may not click on the video, they may decide to later visit the advertiser’s website after seeing the video displayed in search results.

Page views, video views — they’re simple measures that make the web go ’round, but

Page views, video views — they’re simple measures that make the web go ’round, but they don’t really paint a full picture of what users are actually doing online. YouTube today tried to address this issue by adding comments, ratings, and favorites — aka “community engagement” — to the set of analytics it offers all video publishers.

The new analytics will not be directly linked to advertising pricing on the site; you can’t use them to automatically charge a higher rate for a video with which users are more engaged. But they will help publishers brag about the value of the interactions they foster on YouTube.

Information about these interactions will be tied to the day and place where they originated, both for individual videos and for channels. So for instance, a studio could see that a certain cut of a movie trailer did better in the UK, and another in the U.S., or the average rating for each version on any given day, said Tracy Chan, product manager for YouTube Insight. Users could also measure the effectiveness of “calls to action” within their video. Chan did not know what percent of YouTube viewers partake in commenting, rating and favoriting.

YouTube users familiar with YouTube Insight likely noticed the launch of a new Insight feature calle

YouTube users familiar with YouTube Insight likely noticed the launch of a new Insight feature called “Hot Spots” last fall. The dynamic graphs track the level of viewer engagement throughout an entire video by comparing your video to others of similar length. Above average ratings equate to strong user interest whereas below average marks show where users are dropping off.

How Can This Be of Use to PR & Marketing Pros?

Just as Twitter can serve as an excellent customer feedback and focus group resource, Hot Spots provides good insight into video receptivity. Using YouTube’s private setting, one could easily test different videos amongst groups of 25 users at a time (max number of users allowed to view a private video) and adjust videos accordingly based on feedback.

You can imagine how utilizing this feature alsong with TweetGroup or a similar video/live chat sync’d effort could save a company or organization thousands of dollars on coordinating in-person focus groups.

Over time, Hot Spots in conjunction with the other tools provided by Insight (views, popularity, discover, demographics) can be extremely valuable for determining how to tailor your video content to best connect with your target audience.

Give it a try!

For today’s post, I give you some tid bits of info that have, up until now, made my day. Enjoy:

The RIAA has decided to no longer sue copyright infringers‘ pants off finally noticing that after ten years of capitalistic debauchery it was indeed a ridiculous move to bitch-slap their customers around. Bit them in the ass pretty hard. Now they have no ass left but they still have their integrity. Having partnered with ISPs, they plan to follow in the steps of the French by having those ISPs notify the lottery-winning pirates when they’ve illegally downloaded songs, and warn them they’re being watched. If the pirates persist, they will risk losing their connection. (Reuters)

Heavy-Metal seems to be making a good comeback in Egypt! The Cairo government had silenced hard-rock related music genres in the 90s due to the explicit ’satanical’ lyrics, unbearable to Egypt’s conservative establish order. Now bands are gradually expressing their right to rock. (Reuters)

‘Coldplay’s Chris Martin has admitted that the band’s 2000 single Shiver was essentially a Jeff Buckley ripoff’
Why would he do that? No seriously. Satriani, the Creaky Boards, Alize, 80 year old italian composers…and now this? The intricacies of the music business’ deontology remain a mystery to me. Come to think of it, wouldn’t surprise me if Satriani’s team dug this up to throw it in Coldplay’s face.

Youtube has released a feature letting users see a how many unique views a video’s got. To access the feature, visit the YouTube Insights page for the video in question and click ‘Show Unique Users’ under the ‘Views’ tab. Pretty cool to finally know if the great number of hits you got from Japan or something are generated by a single fan or by a community. (Techcrunch)

This has nothing to do with this week’s music news but I can’t resist the opportunity to introduce yet another robot band. Meet The Trons, a droid band created by musician Greg Locke who also loves to rock. Not as sophisticated as Captured By Robot! but still freakin’ awesome. Watch them jam in their basement. Also watch this very cool Captured By Robots!’s gig . Oh and, while looking for the two previous vids I encountered this other bad-ass robot drummer rockin’ with robot-stippers on stage. Just how damn cool is this:

There’s no denying that the future of reaching people online involves creating and distributin

There’s no denying that the future of reaching people online involves creating and distributing videos via YouTube. In May of 2008 alone they had 12.6 million unique visitors.
So how do you get your video in front of those viewers?

Step 1: Get started, create an account, upload videos

Create an account, upload videos with appropriate tags (tags=keywords). When creating your videos, keep in mind that you want your first and last frame to have your organization’s brand, message and URL and you want to select a good image as the still frame image to attract viewers.

Step 2: Make sure to label your account something that other people will search for.

When creating your account, pick a URL that matches your brand name or the keyword phrase for which you want to be known. Make sure to use words that your supporters might use to find you.

Step 3: Customize your YouTube Channel Homepage

Create a homepage that is branded with your organization’s logo as your channel’s profile picture. Use the colors of your logo to design your YouTube Channel.
Step 4: Create a short, strong description for your channel

When creating a YouTube description for your channel, make sure to use your organization’s elevator pitch sprinkled with your keyword phrases. People don’t visit YouTube to read, so make sure it’s short. Make sure to link to your organization’s website.

Step 5: Apply to the YouTube Nonprofit Program
If your nonprofit has 501c3 status and is correctly listed in Guidestar.org, then apply for YouTube’s nonprofit program. After approval, your channel will be listed in the nonprofit directory, you will allowed premium design and branding options for your channel [including a Google "Donate Now" button], and an increased opportunity to be promoted on YouTube.

Step 6: Promote yourself.

Subscribe to other channels. People are more likely to link to you when you link to them. Make sure to put your YouTube link on your other social media profiles and your website.
Step 7: Measure your success.

Make sure to measure your success using YouTube Insight. I have an old post about how to use YouTube Insight here.

According to Insight, YouTube’s statistics package, 100% of YouTube viewers of my 2:25 minute Google Keyword Suggestion tool video within the last 30 days were 45-54 year old males.

Not 50% or 80% but 100%.

If women aren’t watching keyword suggestion tool videos on YouTube, I wonder what types of videos women are watching on YouTube?

YouTube Insight statistics also provide data on a video’s popularity within a country and how it was discovered through its source of views “discovery” tab.

YouTube Country Stats

YouTube Insight provides statistics to everyone who publishes their videos on YouTube.

Get insight into how your videos are performing by logging into your account and clicking on “My Videos”.

Each video has a dashboard with Play, Edit, Annotations and Insight buttons.

Click on Insight to learn how each of your videos are performing on YouTube.

Bands using YouTube to promote their live videos might be interested in using a free tool called You

Bands using YouTube to promote their live videos might be interested in using a free tool called Youtube Insight, which gives them detailed statistics for the videos they upload. With this service, you can see who is viewing your material, where they are located, and when they log on to see it. You can also figure out how long it takes your videos to reach their popularity cap, and what happens to video views as their popularity peaks. All in all, it allows bands to see where their music-exporting efforts are yielding results, and to target their audience more effectively.

To access the tool, go to the right hand column of the video list in the ‘My Videos’ section of your profile and click on the ‘About This Video’ link. This will take you to a graph measuring the number of views and the popularity of your content. You’ll also see a map showing you the regions where your content is most popular. (See image below)

In the same vein we have DashGo, a web based service that allows content producers to distribute their content across music stores and social media sites from a single dashboard. In addition, Dashgo comes with a series of analytics tools that users can use to get detailed info on how the public is reacting to their content on the different platforms. Users can then adapt their distribution according to where they sell best.

If you are serious about your online sales and distribution outlets, stats and analytics tools can be helpful; you might be surprised to know that your band’s got a small community in Finland, or that some New Zealand chap linked back to your website from his blog – you could then proceed to contact these people and start some pro-active networking in those areas. And unless they’re plummeting, stats are fun to look at. StatCounter is a extremely cool free statistics tool that tracks a great deal of your web activity. We use it on our blog in addition to the wordpress.com stats. You can use this type of information in many ways and be creative about it.
Of course your music is where you creativity should shine the most (remember the Please Buy My Record: The Futility Of Flogging Music article posted right before – Don’t let these tools take over !)

Check out these sexy TAGLIT girls wishing Israel Happy B-Day

Taglit is an Israeli project with a mission: to bring Jewish youth from western countries for an educational and fun vacation in Israel. Many of these girls and boys are sons and daughters of Israelis who immigrated to America/Canada/Europe/Australia (Most Israelis who marry none-Israelis end up living abroad). Some of these youngsters don’t have an Israeli parent but they are interested in seeing Israel and getting to know what Israel is all about, and what life in Israel is like. They come here on a holiday, travel a lot, work on a Kibbutz or a Moshav and have lots of fun.

Isragirl Presents : All eyes on Taglit girls, Video by Tasha ©

The goal of Taglit (Discovery in Hebrew) is to get these young women and men familiarized with 21 century Israel, to show them its a fun country to live in and to give them a feeling that this is there second home and that they are always welcome here. The initiators of Taglit hope that after this Israeli experience some of the Taglit participants will consider immigrating to Israel. Another aspiration is that these youngsters will grow up to be supporters of Israel no meter where they choose to live.

The clip was shot in all over Israel (as far as I can tell). By the beach in Tel Aviv and Jaffa, in the old city of Jerusalem and in Makhne Yehuda Market in the western part of the city, in the old city of Acre (by the the sea), in the Galilee and in the amphitheater of Caesarea. I’m not sure about the desert shots (Judea desert or maybe outside Eilat)…The black mud in the bikini shots is Dead Sea mud – full with minerals and very healthy….
The only problem I have with this video is that I’m sure these girls are local and not real Taglit girls. You can watch other videos by them and decide on your own…

During my training sessions with non-profits I have noticed that many are not taking advantage of the new web analytics being offered by YouTube. I wanted to write about what you can measure using YouTube Insight, provide tips for improving your YouTube channel, and highlight a few non-profits that I think are doing a great job with their channel.

I think it’s important to know how any marketing initiative is performing, so if you haven’t already, I would encourage you to log into YouTube Insight to see how many people are looking at your YouTube videos. I will show you information such as:

how many people have viewed your video over a specific time period

Where those viewers come from by demographic and geographic location.

how people are finding your videos (web search, YouTube search, link from your website. etc…)

Tips for Improving your YouTube Channel:

Once you’ve taken a look at your numbers, here are a few quick tips to help you increase the traffic to your videos:

Make your account name the name of your non-profit, not something cute that no one will search on.

Use the profile section to describe your non-profit using words from your keyword list.

Link back to your website in the website field

When you upload video content – make sure your video’s file name has descriptive words in it. Ditto with the title and tags.

Add a donation button

Link to you YouTube account from your other social media profiles and your website

Upload your YouTube videos into Facebook (your personal profile or your group profile) and take advantage of the fact that it’s currently the largest video sharing site.

Non-Profits that have Good YouTube Channels

Here are a few non-profits that I think are doing a good job optimizing their YouTube Channel and branding it to look like their non-profit:

The Green Children
Greenpeace

Defenders of Wildlife

Montgomery Bay Aquarium – I especially like that they are encouraging visitors to upload their own video.

And this last channel is pure brilliance – the channel uses keywords and the organization is marketing it to their demographic – men tend to go online to watch funny videos. You seriously have to watch this video about self examination for testicular cancer. It got picked up by YouTube on “Trend Spotting Tuesdays” and received over 600,000 hits in it’s first 24-hour period.

Non-Profits YouTube Channels with Potential

And here are some suggestions for non-profits that are doing a decent job but could tweak a few things and do even better:

Amnesty International – they could do a better job incorporating their keyword research, start using tags, and label the titles of their videos with frequently searched keywords.

Earlier this year, YouTube stepped up its services by adding a analytical element called YouTube Insight. For any PR person, simple, effective analytics are a dream come true. Luckily, in the world of social media analytics are pretty refined and YouTube Insight helps put a bit more science behind marketing and tailoring online videos.

After a video is posted, the site immediately begins tracking statistics about viewership, popularity, discovery and demographics.

Why is this important?

Let’s say I’m planning to produce and post a series of ten videos during the course of the next year for client X that demonstrate the “World’s Best Dance Move” with the goal of increasing brand awareness and ultimately driving viewers to visit company X’s website.

By regularly analyzing each video’s statistics, I now have the ability to adapt my production plan to tailor my video content to the demographic that’s actually paying attention. Furthermore, I’m able to discern what tags (The Sprinkler, The Shopping Cart, The Running Man, etc.) and method of discovery (via embedded players? external links? Google search? YouTube search?) are generating results. Now I just need to convince my boss to find such a client.

If you have a YouTube channel and have posted some videos since March, I encourage you to hop over and check your Insight. In addition, enjoy this nice little “Intro to Insight” video below from one of YouTube’s finest.

Cheers,
Scott

YouTube is the latest social network that is offering brands free demographic data about users who click on their offerings. These facts will highly influence how bands, TV shows, movies and consumer products are marketed virally on the Web.

A feature called YouTube Insight, introduced in March, gives YouTube account holders a range of statistics, charts and maps about their audiences, and it is free!

The data bring some science to what has in the past just been a crapshoot in terms of knowing who exactly is watching/reading a brands viral marketing efforts.

The video was posted on May 23 and in less than two weeks, over 5.5 million have watched it, and now because of Insight we know that 65% of viewers are male. And after three days, 38% of viewers had discovered the video on other websites where people had posted it.

With this information, Weezer is planning on figuring out how to target the same demographic groups that watched the video, and how to reach out to those that didn’t.

After nearly ten years of driving the same car, I recently bought a new one.

I decided to sell my old car the new way – online.

Having been on the web now for nearly a decade, I have found a lot of inefficiencies remain when it comes time to bridge the gap between generating a lead online and closing a high ticket sale offline.

When it comes to selling cars online there are several options.

eBay Motors and AutoTrader.com were the two resources that came to mind.

Up until yesterday, I didn’t have an eBay account so eBay Motors wasn’t an option. If I recall though, eBay Motors is the largest single used “car dealer” in the world – last time I looked I think they generated $2 Billion in car sales annually.

I have an older Mercedes and because of its limited appeal, I sought the advice of a local used car dealer on how best to go about selling it.

He recommended trying AutoTrader.com.

I set up an account and got my car advertised online within a day and then in the local Auto Trader print publication within a week.

I started getting calls soon after my ad came out and then slowly came to realize some of the aforementioned online lead to offline sale time related inefficiencies.

The internet is great for connecting sellers with buyers they wouldn’t have otherwise likely ever met, however when it comes time to sell something large and physical it presents a whole new set of problems.

Half of the inquiries I received about the car resulted in the callers desire to see and test drive the car.

Well, I am not a car salesman and I don’t have time to drop everything I am doing to go show a car at unpredictable times of the weekday. Scheduling time to meet potential buyers on the weekend is even more difficult.

The problem: How can I “show” my car to prospective buyers without having to take an hour or two of my time to do it?

My answer: Produce a short video clip of the car that shows its condition to prospective buyers and post it on YouTube. Prospects can then “look” over the car without either of us having to physically meet to do it.

I shot a couple of minutes of video and then posted it in my YouTube account.

I also modified both my online and print AutoTrader ads to include “Search YouTube” to see this car.

Autotrader.com Ad:

The video has been up a week and according to YouTube’s insight feature the video has already been viewed over 100 times primarily from searches within YouTube.

YouTube Video Insight:

I have also posted a Craigslist ad for my car. It too mentions viewing the car online beforehand by searching for it in YouTube.

Craigslist Ad:

Now whenever I get a call about the car, I ask them whether they have seen it on YouTube or not and then direct them to its YouTube page to see it first before we arrange a time to test drive it.

Using YouTube to preview used cars for sale reduces the inefficiencies of showing vehicles to non buyers while further qualifiing the prospects most interested in potentially buying my car.

I have set a couple of appointments for prospects to test drive my car this weekend.

Regardless of whether the car gets sold this weekend or not, I haven’t wasted my time showing it to someone who hasn’t already convinced me they are a highly qualified –ie., interested – prospective buyer .

YouTube Insight, is the new free web analytics tools that reports context for online videos. This will fundamentally changes the way videos are used as a marketing tool on the web and is a major leap for web analytics.

Anyone with a YouTube account can view video analytics that they’ve uploaded, just by clicking on the “About this Video” link under My account > Manage my Videos > Videos, Favorites & Playlists for your uploaded videos.

How often are your videos viewed?

What geographic regions have viewed your video?

How popular is your video is relative to all videos in the market over a given time?

How long does it take for a video on YouTube to become popular?

What happens to views as your popularity peaks?

Right now the tool is only showing Views and Popularity broken down by country or USA State but new features will be available soon according to YouTube. The insights and learning that marketers can gain from this new analytics tool could very well change the game entirely. Perhaps this is one step closer to understanding how viral videos really work and how to make them more effective and how video can be designed persuasively.

Here are a few details from the blog post announcing the release. “YouTube Insight, a free tool that enables anyone with a YouTube account to view detailed statistics about the videos that they upload to the site. For example, uploaders can see how often their videos are viewed in different geographic regions, as well as how popular they are relative to all videos in that market over a given period of time. You can also delve deeper into the lifecycle of your videos, like how long it takes for a video to become popular, and what happens to video views as popularity peaks.”

“…With the Insight information, video creators can dig into the specifics of a video’s performance and find, for example, that it peaks on Fridays in winter months, or it has taken several weeks to get traction — information that can help better promote their work. The information, presented as a color-coded map and a graph of a video’s popularity, is accessible through a link from a video creator’s account page on YouTube. The company will update the data once a day.”

I don’t see any of that data live yet, at least, not for my videos but I’m reminded of ComScore Ad Metrix, a new service being rolled out that will show what ads were running on a site (yours or a competitor), the number of impressions, the ad creative, and eventually, the spend. I found that interesting for Analytics, as then, you might be able to explain why visitation gained or dropped and track it back to the specific ad and specific property it ran on.

I think, regardless of what you think of YouTube or of what ComScore is rolling out – it’s clear metrics is moving from being about a site ( what happens on the site) to what happens to the content of a site when it’s shown somewhere else or syndicated somewhere else – in other words – metrics are moving towards becoming behavioral.

Since I haven’t actually worked with or even seen live versions of either of the products I’m writing about here I’ll leave my comments about the what either one delivers to a future time when I can take a closer look at the live platforms.

I also got a demo of ComScore Segment Metrix H/M/L yesterday – again, the focus is behavioral and both ComScore Ad Metrix and ComScore Segment Metrix would yield a lot of additional insights were I able to work with them. Half the battle is just getting those products purchased, to be honest.

The other thing to note is API level integration of this data – say, ComScore’s with your Analytics – is possible – and companies are doing it.- some companies are doing i, I should say – and it would be great if segment metrix could be overlayed to existing pages of a site – at least, all the main pages – and be integrated with the analytics.

That’s some I’d like to see happen and be able to work with the data.
